P r e s i d e n t O b a m a p l a n t o re d u c e d r o p o u t r a t e c o u l d a i d Ga r y s c h o o l s Steps outlined by President Barack Obama earlier this week highlighted his administration’s plan to combat the dropout crisis and invest in strategies to ensure students graduate prepared for college and careers. The plan, that is part of the president’s 2011 budget, could go a long way in addressing the low performing schools in the Gary Public School System. Three Gary high schools have posted low graduation rates in recent years with Roosevelt High School having the lowest number of graduates. The school had a 44 percent graduation rate last year. In announcing the initiative on Monday, March 1 at the America’s Promise Alliance GradNation event hosted by Alliance Founding Chairman General Colin Powell and his wife and Alliance Chair Alma Powell, Obama challenged states to identify high schools with graduation rates below 60% and discussed the Administration’s investments to help them turn those schools around. The Obama Administration has committed $3.5 billion to fund transformational changes in America’s persistently low-performing schools. Addi-

tionally, the President’s FY 2011 budget includes $900 million to support School Turnaround Grants. Obama also emphasized the importance of investing in dropout prevention and recovery strategies to help make learning more engaging and relevant for students, and announced new efforts to invest $100 million in a College Pathways program to promote a college readiness culture in high schools, through programs that allow students to earn a high school diploma and college credit at the same time. “This is a problem we can’t afford to accept or ignore,” said Obama. “The stakes are too high - for our children, for our economy, for our country. It’s time for all of us to come together - parents and students, principals and teachers, business leaders and elected officials - to end America’s dropout crisis. The Indiana Department of Education will assist in identifying schools with below 60 percent graduation rates around the state. In the Gary public school system efforts are underway to address the problem. The school system has an accreditation application program allowing students to re-

take courses needed to graduate concurrently with regular course work. Gary school officials continue to examine

why students are leaving school without a diploma. They applaud Obama’s initiative in addressing the problem.

Darren Washington wants to be the next Washington in Washington By Carmen M. Woodson-Wray After Hammond’s mayor announced he would not seek U.S. Senator Evan Bayh’s senate seat and Highland’s clerk-treasurer tossed aside the idea, Gary School Board member Darren Washington announced that he would seek the democratic nomination for the office. Senator Bayh, who won the seat in 1998, announced just days before filing for the May primary that he would not seek a third term in Congress. In a statement he said, “I love working for the people of Indiana, I love helping our citizens make the most of their lives, but I do not love Congress.”

Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott, Jr. had announced that he would run for the seat, but pulled out. He saw his chance as a long shot and realized he did not stand a chance due to the election process. Also considering the candidacy was Highland

Clerk-Treasurer Michael Griffin, but he too passed up on the idea saying he was “occupied with other priorities.” Washington, an at-Large member of the Gary Community School Board, said if (Continued on page 2)

Cong. Pete Visclosky announces fifth installment of FAA funding for GCA $5 million Will Support Runway Extension Efforts Congressman Pete Visclosky this week announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded the Gary/Chicago International Airport (GCA) its fifth installment of federal assistance for airport expansion efforts under the Letter of Intent that was approved in 2006.

Congressman Pete Visclosky This $5 million grant will support the runway extension project. “The Gary Airport is one of Northwest Indiana’s untapped resources with high potential to transform the region,” said Visclosky. “These substantial investments in airport improvements can put people to work in the near

term while laying the foundation for robust new industries that will create new jobs in Northwest Indiana. The airport can be a catalyst for economic development throughout the region and I am pleased it has the continued support of the FAA.” The FAA grant awarded this week is the fifth payment of the Letter of Intent that was approved in 2006. The Letter of Intent provides $57.8 million over 10 years, available in installments of up to $6 million per year, for improvements and expansion that will help GCA stake its claim as the third major airport in the region. The planned expansion would increase the size of the airport by roughly 50 percent and extend the main runway to a length of 9,000 feet. To date, GCA has received over $25 million under the Letter of Intent. Visclosky has long been an advocate for GCA, working with local officials to best utilize the facility. In addition to supporting the airport’s efforts to secure the Letter of Intent, he directed $14.8 million to the airport for apron expansion, runway overlay, safety modernization, and various other improvements, and $24.961 million for the Indiana National Guard Readiness Center at the airport.

ALEX DOMINGUEZ ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE — Alex Dominguez recently announced that he is a candidate for Lake Circuit Court Judge in the May 2010 primary election. Dominguez, who is an attorney in private practice is the nephew of Lake County Sheriff Roy Dominguez. Dominguez is married to the former Angelica Pagn (pictured) who is a special education teacher in the Public School System and is the father of three children. He is a graduate of Indiana University Northwest and DePaul University College of Law. Dominguez is a member of the Lake County Bar Association. Prior to gong into private practice Dominguez served as a former Lake County Deputy Prosecutor, Public Defender, County Court Division. Dominguez also worked as the attorney for the East Chicago Department of Code Enforcement. If elected, Dominguez said he wants to expand public online access to court records, dispose of cases in a timely fashion and eliminate backlogs in the court. He also wants to maintain a lawful and level field for litigants and promote community legal education programs. If elected Dominguez will succeed Lorenzo Arredondo, who is stepping down at the end of his term.

Darren Washington wants to be . . . nominated by the committee his goal will be to represent the everyday people and make sure their needs are met. “We need people in Congress who understand the needs of the people. I think there is a disconnection in Washington with citizens and the problems we are facing. We need people who understand what the people are going through,” he said. Washington said he has a problem with those who have town hall meetings and go back to Washington, D.C. with no perception of what the average working class Hoosier is experiencing. He said, “We need real people in Washington.” One of Washington’s main concerns is the healthcare issue and the cost it will generate to provide for everyone. He said, “I believe in helping, but not a trillion dollar debt. I don’t have health care insurance, but I believe in vesting intervention. I work out, eat right and stay in the health club. We can’t allow insurance companies to drop people, but we also can’t put the cost of healthcare on the backs of young people of the future.” Washington said if chosen by the party he will not accept insur-

ance until there is a comprehensive health care plan that is affordable. With over 10 years of experience in public and business administration, Washington said if elected he will not go to Washington to succumb to the needs of President Barack Obama. He said, “I voted for Obama, but I’m not going there to be a puppet of the party. I’m going to represent Hoosiers.” He also pointed out the strong support the State of Indiana had on the election of President Obama. “If it had not been for Lake County going from ‘red’ to ‘blue’ and the fact that people of color came out and voted it only shows that we support the president,” he said. At the age of 39, he has held several key positions in the community. He is the former executive director of the Indiana Commission on the Social Status of Black Males. In the corporate sector he has worked in Real Estate Investment and Telecommunications and is currently hosting his own radio and cable television show titled “Singles in the City.” During his second successful term for Gary School Board Member he came in first with

ly hope of having someone of color as a representative in the United States Senate. He said his next move is to reach out to the people. “I need to let them know I am concerned and understand the struggles of Hoosiers,” he

said. The Democratic Central Committee cannot meet to vote on a candidate until after the May 4 primary and has until June 30 to choose a nominee.

Bakewell, other Black media leaders address Congress on Census ad dollars WASHINGTON (NNPA) - A Congressional hearing has finally addressed Black newspaper publishers’ and other ethnic media’s campaign against inadequate advertising budgets set forth by the Census Bureau that some say undermines the nation’s upcoming headcount of African-Americans. The Information Policy, Census and National Archives Subcommittee held a hearing on Capitol Hill that examined the 2010 Census’ integrated media campaign in what they deem ‘hardto-count’ areas and assessed ethnic media’s role in preventing an undercount of minorities. “I must tell you, there must be a lack of importance delivering the 2010 Census to all Black households throughout America, as evidenced by the Census’ initial offer to buy advertisement in only a small portion of Black newspapers with a budget of $1.3 million dollars to count 40 million people,” said Danny Bakewell, chairman of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, a federation of more than 200 Black-owned newspapers. “With a budget of $1.3 million, you don’t intend to count Black people.” Blacks were undercounted by two percent in 2000, which amounted to a loss of $180 million in federal funds to Black communities, according to

Bakewell’s statistics. “We need more money,” Bakewell said. “The Black Press of America needs at least $10 million dollars to have a consistent message in 200 Black newspapers throughout America. There is no reason to cherry pick.” He held that only “trusted” media such as Black-owned broadcasters and newspapers would be able to effectively deliver the Census’ message to Black communities. “If you want to communicate with Black people than you’re going to have to communicate through us,” Bakewell said. Subcommittee chairman Rep. Lacy Clay (D- Mo.) chaired the three-panel hearing. He was flanked by congressional subcommittee members Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R- Utah), as well as Maxine Waters (D- Calif.) and Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-Texas), who are not officially listed as subcommittee members but attended because of their interest. The hearing was a major accomplishment for minority media, but especially for NNPA’s Bakewell, who pushed for the members to hold the hearing as he engaged in behind the scenes warfare with those responsible for the spending. Congressional subcommittee members grilled the Director of

Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) said that she was concerned about much of the information that she was receiving about media buyers threatening Black media into giving away placements in exchange for their allotted advertising funding. “It appears that our message of the undercount is not being respected,” she said. Waters also shared that she believes that the money is not enough to be effective. “The money does not appear to match the need,” she said. Groves defended the amounts used to purchase media ads saying they were were based on statistical and historic data. “I can honestly say that the program was set up in an objective manner guided by data on what audiences needed given their historical behavior,” Groves said in response to the perceived unfairness in media buys with ethnic media outlets.

Indiana General Assembly Legislative Round-up By State Senator Lonnie M. Randolph, D-East Chicago INDIANAPOLIS—State lawmakers worked through major endof-session deadlines this week. The Senate completed its consideration of House-passed bills and vice-versa. The rest of the session will focus on negotiating differences between House and Senate versions of bills during joint conference committees. Compromises will be sought on a myriad of issues such as tightening the ethics rules for the legislative and executive branches, providing additional aid and jobs for the state’s unemployed, and establishing redistricting guidelines for the drawing of new legislative and congressional districts in 2011. This brief summary highlights some of the action taken by the Senate this week. Property tax billing process – A measure which would require a uniform semi-annual payment schedule for property tax bills is moving through the process. House Bill (HB) 1059 would provide property owners with proper notice of the tax amount due on their properties and maintain a consistent schedule for bills. The measure would require counties that anticipate being beThe Gary Crusader

If the final property tax bills could not be determined by fall, the remaining 50 percent of the previous year’s bill would be collected by November 10. If the final amount for the current year can be determined, a reconciliation bill for the remainder of the current year’s taxes would be issued and due in November. This legislation will not only help homeowners to better budget for their property taxes, it will also help local governments to develop more accurate operating budgets and avoid taking out millions in loans with costly interest rates. The bill returns to the House for consideration of Senate amendments. Randolph co-sponsored this bill and worked to successfully move it through the Senate. Bankruptcy exemptions – HB 1021 provides that a debtor’s Indiana earned income tax credit is property that would be considered exempt under the bankruptcy property exemption statute if this bill becomes law. EDITORIAL COMMON SENSE AND SCHOOL REFORM For many years now, people in America have been giving lip service about desiring better quality public schools. No Child Left Behind, a product of the Bush administration, was the latest in a national attempt to shore up the public schools and improve education. The jury is still out, but preliminary observations hint that it just did not work! In fact, because of the emphasis on standardized testing, a lot of students got “pushed out” of schools in order to keep them from pulling down the achievement average of troubled schools. Another alleged consequence was that schools were motivated to cheat, i.e., some would teach to the tests, or use tests that were not difficult in order to make it appear that the schools were doing better than they were doing. Now comes the next incarnation of a less than adequate approach - school turnarounds, wherein entire school staffs, principals and all, are fired. In light of the fact that there are a myriad of factors impacting troubled schools, this tactic is like throwing out the proverbial baby with the bathwater. Some good teachers and principals are bound to be caught in the mayhem. In addition to the turnarounds, there are pundits who call for a longer school day, in spite of the fact that the dropout rate, especially among minorities, is higher than three Mt. Everests! What is the logic behind extending the school day in order to retain students that don’t want to be there in the first place? This makes less sense than a copper penny. Astute observers could have seen the current public schools crisis coming a long time ago. The formula for America’s failing schools is simple - low paid teachers who became scapegoats; a dumbed down popular culture; inadequate school funding; inadequate financial resources in impoverished communities where people are motivated toward the “quick money fix” of drug dealing, and the consequent lack of interest in schools by youth who compare the often pedantic approach in many classrooms with the quick pace of video games and music videos. In other words, the problem is systemic and it is historical. Unless there are several very fundamental changes in the way that America values public education and funds public education, the new turnaround is just another runaround. It will not have the intended impact. Because of the inanity of some so-called school reform attempts juxtaposed to the notion of school vouchers, which always seem to be waiting in the wings, along with the “charter school” movement, one wonders whether or not there is a deliberate attempt to undermine public education. You just can’t blame all teachers for low achieving schools when they are mostly located in communities torn apart by poverty. It is ludicrous to think this is a viable conclusion. As long as Johnny and Johnetta can make more money slinging drugs on the corner than their teachers, it will be very difficult to keep them in schools, especially if the employment that awaits them at graduation is in minimum wage fast food establishments or department stores. One final note: school reform will not take place without a major push coming from parents. They are the keys to positive change, and unless they get involved, there will be no progress in this arena, period. We need some common sense in school reform, and we need it now! 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR LETTER A PROPAGANDA LAND GRAB PLOY Dear Editor:

Suggesting that negative, polarized and sometimes inaccurate news coverage from one media source is enough to eradicate an entire city is a very irresponsible, dangerous and hateful attempt to stigmatize and minimize the worth of Gary’s residents. An overwhelming majority of Gary residents and natives are law-abiding citizens who are in favor of business development opportunities and economic expansion. However, we are not willing to relent to the belief that everything in Gary is worth less or worthless enough to just let die. After all, the question still remains. Once Gary dies, who would benefit from taking the land?

Recently, former Gary bank owner and GUEA board member, Chris Morrow submitted a propagandized letter to the editor. On the contrary, Gary is an asset not a deficit to the region. Our city is rich in both history and resources. If this were not the case, the urgency to force the sale of designated parcels of land would not exist. It seems illogical that a person who has benefitted from doing business in Gary for many years would attempt to impose such an imperialistic ideology on a generKenneth Stalling, President ation that is well aware of the Gary School Board of meaning of code language, like “Gary residents” and “people Trustees from the suburbs.” A healthy brunch Even his theory that Gary residents do not support the Railcats to start the day at is flawed. THE APPLE IS STILL FALLIN’ Mayor Junior McDermott ticked off a lot of Gary folks when he appeared before the General Assembly last week to lobby against a bill that would have allowed Gary to get a land based casino. Not content with hiring a lobbyist to work against the passage of the legislation, the Hammond mayor felt he had to personally speak against the bill to make sure that it died. This should come as no surprise that junior would be anti Gary – after all it was his father, Thomas McDermott, Sr. who during his tenure as mayor erected the dirt wall on Ninth Avenue to keep Gary residents from coming into Hammond via the all white

Hessville neighborhood. So you see the apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree. - No s e y WE AIN’T FORGOT It came to Nosey’s attention that a few days ago former Mercantile Bank president and Dyer resident Christopher Morris in a letter to one of the local daily newspapers had some really bad things to say about Gary. In essence he said that Gary is a dying city and that it ought to just go on and die. He said that any state or federal funds for municipalities in this area should bypass Gary and go to cities like Hammond because investing in Gary is just a waste of money. Interesting how time brings about a change. A few years back when Morrow’s bank was benefiting form the money of Gary citizens he didn’t seem to have any problems with the city. Nor did he express any concerns about Gary while he was president of the Gary Urban Enterprise Zone board of directors. While serving as president of that board he had

no problem looking the other way while the programvdirector and other employees ripped of seven hundred thousand dollars that should have gone to revitalize the Emerson area. Don’t know if he was over medicated or hadn’t taken his medication when he wrote his letter, but one thing for sure is that he is the last person that ought to be downing Gary, seeing as how he played a role in trying to bring the city down. - No s e y MAKES YOU WONDER Comments made by Mayor Rudy Clay at a recent Black History Program has some folks wondering if the mayor is supporting an illegal activity. Word reached Nosey that during the program sponsored by the Gary Public Library, that featured the author Sapphire as special guest, Clay in welcoming her to the city said he hadn’t read the book that inspired the movie Precious but he had seen the DVD copy of the movie. Clay’s comments caused a buzz among the audi-

ence since the movie hadn’t been realized on DVD yet, they figured he was either stretching the true somewhat or he’d purchased a bootleg copy of the film. Making and selling bootleg copies of movies is illegal and a while back the police were raiding several locations in the city where they were selling them. Among the places where you can get a bootleg copy of movies is the local flea market, and it is rumored that the mayor’s Hummer has been seen at the flea market on various weekends. Maybe he was out shopping for some bootleg DVDs and got a good deal on “Precious” from boys at the flea market. - No s e y AIN’T NO LOVE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY According to Calumet Township Board member Ron Matlock the lack of love shown by members of the Gary Precinct Organization caused him not to be selected Lake County Recorder. In a letter sent to the local daily Matlock laid the

blame for defeat at the feet of Rudy Clay and Elsie Franklin. While he may be correct in blaming them because they did play a role in his defeat however, Matlock fails to realize that was sort a payback situation. Word is when Clay was seeking reelection as chairman of the Lake County Precinct Organization Matlock was an active member of the ABC (anybody but Clay) movement, thus playing a role in Clay’s defeat. If turn about is fair play then Clay was more than obliged to return the favor. When it came time for the caucus to fill the recorder’s position Clay chose not to think Matlock. What’s interesting about this whole thing is that both men blamed their defeats on lack of support from Gary, which is clearly not the case. There are 509 members of the Lake County Democratic Precinct Organization of which 140 are from Gary. If all of the Gary committeemen had backed Clay and Matlock they still would have lost because the numbers weren’t there. The majority of the organization is white and they chose to go with someone white. So it’s time to move on.

Attorney General Greg Zoeller offering Amnesty for businesses Businesses not compliant with Unclaimed Property law by November 1 will face penalties and interest payments In 2009, more than $42 million was returned to people through the Indiana Attorney General’s Unclaimed Property (UCP) program. Indiana law requires businesses to report assets of individual owner accounts to the state after a period of inactivity, typically three to five years. But not all businesses are aware this law exists and some may be ignoring the law. Attorney General Greg Zoeller is offering amnesty until November 1, 2010 allowing businesses to come into compliance by reporting unclaimed assets. “Our first priority is to return as much money as possible to its rightful owners. The Amnesty program will further that mission by expanding the amount of forgotten or lost money that will be readily available to find its way back to its owner,” Zoeller said. “It is important that businesses recognize their legal obligations to report and the benefit to the people who truly own the money.” Some of the most common types of unclaimed properties businesses may hold include checking accounts, utility deposits, insurance payments, security investments, and un-cashed wages. Oftentimes the owner of the account or money cannot be located due to moving without leaving a forwarding address, or there was a mistake made in updating an address. Under amnesty, businesses, also

known as “holders,” have an opportunity to comply before the state begins conducting enhanced auditing and without fear of interest or penalties. The penalties for failing to file an annual unclaimed property report is $100 per day if the report is late, up to $5,000. A holder who intentionally fails to file a report is subject to an additional civil penalty of 10% of the value of the property that must be reported. “Unclaimed property does not belong to the companies that are holding it and the rightful owners are often not aware the property exists,” said Becky Yuan, Director of the Attorney General’s Unclaimed Property Division. “This amnesty period provides businesses the time to learn what qualifies as unclaimed property and how to report it without consequence so Hoosiers can have the opportunity to search for and claim it for free.” Throughout the next several months, the Unclaimed Property Division will be conducting free educational workshops to increase awareness and understanding of a holder’s legal reporting obligations under state law. Dates of these workshops will be posted online as soon as they are available. There is more than $385 million in the state’s unclaimed property database. Each year approximately $40 million is added to the database during the reporting period. To learn more about the Unclaimed Property Holder Amnesty Program, please visit www.IndianaUnclaimed.com/re porting or call 317.883.4520 or 1.800.447.5598.

Indiana General Assembly Legislative Round-up (Continued from page 3) property. The bill now returns to the House for final consideration. Township government reform – Under HB 1181 the legislative and fiscal responsibilities of township boards would transfer to the counties beginning in 2013. The bill also prohibits nepotism by township officers and requires additional expense reporting by township trustees to increase transparency. For positions held before July 1, 2010, the bill would not require termination of a relative employed in township government until January 1, 2015. This legislation now heads back to the House of Representatives for consideration of changes made to the bill by the Senate. Aging Hoosier population – a proposal urging the creation of a summer study committee to address the needs of the state’s aging population advanced this week. Senate Resolution 22 would direct the study committee to identify best practices to provide community infrastructure, features and services that will locally support residents through the aging process. The study is motivated by an initiative, Communities for a Lifetime,

endorsed by AARP Indiana, IU Center on Aging and Community, and the Indiana Association of Area Agencies on Aging. State adoption of a similar community model would help local communities better address basic needs such as housing, mobility, accessible services to optimize physical and mental health, how to maximize independence for those with frailty or disability, and the promotion of social and civic engagement. U.S. Census statistics for 2008 indicate that nearly 1.65 million Hoosiers, or one-fourth of Indiana residents, are between age 45 and 65. Another 813,000 residents are over age 65. Bills advance to Governor - Several bills approved by both chambers now proceed to the governor for final consideration. Once received, the governor has seven days to sign a bill into law, allow the bill to become law without his signature, or veto the legislation. Legislation which gained unanimous approval of both chambers will benefit laid off public safety officials. HEA 1194 will extend the reinstatement rights of laid off police officers and firefighters from three to five years. Once enacted,

the bill will allow more laid off public safety officials to be rehired once the economy begins to rebound, which would reduce local government expenses associated with training and certification. As of July 1, 2011, House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1061 directs the $2 county identification security protection fee to be divided up as follows: $1 into the County Recorder’s Records Perpetuation Fund; $0.50 into the county Identification Security Protection Fund; and $0.50 into the county Elected Officials Training Fund. If signed into law, all counties will be required to establish the training fund to provide training for county elected officials. The bill would also require training for elected Circuit Court Clerks. Randolph co-sponsored this bill. Lawmakers also unanimously supported HEA 1165 which will protect a veteran’s service-connected benefits from being seized through legal action to collect a debt. The bill takes what is already federal law and places it into state statute. The public would no longer be able to access handgun license information contained in a statewide database under HEA 1068.

The pavilion would be redesigned and expanded as a multi-use facility; the second floor would continue to serve as a location for special events in the evenings, such as weddings and galas. But the first floor would be redesigned to include a Healthy Eating Cafe —open to the public yearround — featuring breakfast and lunch menus developed by local chefs who create recipes using seasonal, locally grown, free-range and organic food (grown in Indiana).

The cafe could promote new culinary uses for locally grown organic greens, fruits, vegetables and grains that are sustainably grown and harvested. Given the rich ethnic diversity in Gary, the cafe could also feature wholesome, nutritious recipes that cater to the Hispanic and African American communities. However, in the interests of serving the public and a wide range of palates and incomes, it would be paramount to ensure that prices are affordable so a middle class family can enjoy breakfast, brunch or lunch at the cafe before or after a day at the beach, a brisk bicycle ride or hike through the park. Also, the pavilion should be the location for bicycle and non-motor boat rental. Another structure could be built adjacent to the Pavilion to house and maintain a fleet of bicycles

and boats. The simplest boats to rent would probably be paddle boats; however, canoes and kayaks would also be options. On Saturday, March 6, the project team for the Marquette Park Lakefront East Master Plan will host an open house at Marquette Park Pavilion from 1 to 4 p.m. to discuss the preliminary design concept. A brief presentation will be given at 1:30 pm. The public is invited to provide feedback. We all have a stake in the $28 million restoration of Marquette Park. Tickets for each are $25 for the general public and $18 for senior citizens and Valpo alumni. The six-day festival also features free concerts by jazz ensembles from the University and area high schools. Union director and festival organizer Larry Mosher says to celebrate the milestone 25th

anniversary of the event at Valpo, two of the biggest names in the jazz genre will take the stage in separate headline events. “We want to make this a festival to remember for the students and the community,” Mosher says. “There are many jazz festivals in this region that don’t have two artists of this caliber in the same event, so this is a wonderful opportunity for region jazz lovers.” Cuban-born Arturo Sandoval, a protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, is worldrenowned for his performance on the jazz trumpet and flugel horn, and as a classical artist, pianist and composer. He has won four Grammy awards, six Billboard awards and an Emmy award. Sandoval’s versatility can be heard on recordings with artists as diverse as Gillespie, Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka and Rod Stewart. He has performed with Celine Dion at the Oscars, John Williams with the Boston Pops and in the Super Bowl with Tony Bennett and Patti LaBelle. The Count Basie Orchestra, a 16-to-18 piece big band, became one of the most prominent jazz performing groups of the swing era under the leadership of Count Basie. The band survived a decline of big band popularity in the 1940s and went on to produce collaborations with singers including Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald in the 1950s and 1960s. After Basie’s death in 1984, the band continued to perform under the direction of some of the players he had hired, and is now directed by former trombonist Bill Hughes. The band continues to tour and release new recordings including “Basie is Back” in 2006. The Count Basie Orchestra also produces notable collaborations, such as with singer Ray Charles in the 2006 album “Ray Sings, Basie Swings.” The University’s Jazz Fest is the

Caleb Curry

Curry, 23, comes to the Northern League after two seasons with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in the rookie Northwest League. Selected in the 14th Round of the 2008 Major League Entry Draft by the Giants, Curry batted .270 in his rookie season with a robust .349 on-base percentage. The speedy outfielder also stole 13 bases in 68 games and legged out nine extra-base hits, including his only professional home run. Last season, Curry played in 43 games for the Volcanoes and matched his career high with seven doubles. A native of Alexandria, Minn., Curry was a two-time All-America at Minnesota State Community Technical College before transferring to the University of Iowa in 2007. Curry continued to put up big numbers with the Hawkeyes, earning back-to-back All-Big Ten Second Team honors and hitting .396 with a schoolrecord 45 stolen bases as a senior. The right-hander led Iowa in batting, doubles, home runs, RBI and stolen bases in 2008 and finished his two-year Hawkeyes career with 138 hits and 106 RBI in only 106 games. Curry becomes the 11th player to sign a contract for the upcoming season, joining fellow outfielders Adam Klein and Mike Massaro, infielders Jeff Beachum, Chris Carrara and Mike Rohde,

catcher Matt Lenski, and pitchers Aaron Cook, Zach McClellan, Andy Paulun and J.J. Potrikus. The RailCats expect to have at least 28 players in camp when the team opens Spring Training May 6 at U. S. Steel Yard. RailCats Legend Willie Glen Returning fir 2010 Season The greatest pitcher in Gary SouthShore RailCats history will be back on the mound at U. S. Steel Yard in the summer of 2010 as right-hander Willie Glen has agreed to terms with the ‘Cats on a contract for the upcoming season. The signing was first announced at the RailCats secondannual Fan Fest Saturday. As part of the Closing Ceremonies at Saturday’s Fan Fest, RailCats Manager Greg Tagert held up a number 23 jersey and announced to a raucous ovation that Glen would be back in a RailCats uniform this summer. One of Fan Fest’s featured guests, Glen took part in all of the day’s festivities as a crown 1,000 fans strong descended on the Radisson Hotel in Merrillville to celebrate RailCats baseball for the second February in a row. Glen, 32, comes back to Gary after pitching for the Florida Marlins Double-A and Triple-A affiliates the last two seasons. The last time the right-hander was in a RailCats uniform, he was delivering the seminal performance of his career in Game Five of the 2007 Northern League Championship Series - a 143pitch, complete game win that clinched the ‘Cats second league title. In his first tour with the RailCats, Glen pitched in parts of three seasons (2005-07) and was a relentless force in the starting rotation, making a whopping 66 starts in his three year RailCats career. And as reliable as Glen was, he was at times even more dominant - going an unfathomable 16-1 in 2007 (including the playoffs) and shattering the Northern League’s single-season strikeout record in the regular season by piling up 162 whiffs in 139.2 innings. That sensational 2007 earned Glen mountains of awards, including First Team Baseball America All-Independent Leagues honors, the Northern League Pitcher of the Year award, the Northern League Championship Series MVP and following the season - a shot back in affiliated baseball with the Marlins. Glen’s career numbers with the ‘Cats are staggering, with the slender right-hander boasting a 32-9 record and 3.23 ERA. In 409.0 RailCats innings (more

Our Pledge To Toyota Drivers When Kiichiro Toyoda brought Toyota into the auto business in 1937, he created a set of principles that has always guided how we operate. The pillars of the “Toyota Way” are “respect for people” and “continuous improvement.” These remain core values – and we’ll adhere closely to them as we make vehicle safety our top priority. We have already taken decisive steps to make things right for our drivers. -

-

-

All 172,000 team members and dealers across North America are working day and night to fix our recalled vehicles – and one million have already been repaired. Our solutions are effective and durable – and we are confident that no problems exist with our electronic throttle control system. We’ve asked a world-class engineering firm to conduct a comprehensive independent analysis of this system. Their interim report confirms that its multiple fail-safes work – and we will make their final report public.

But we are not stopping there. Toyota will set a new standard for speed of response on safety issues. For example, we are expanding our field monitoring team with the goal of conducting on-site inspections of unwanted acceleration reports as soon as possible.

And we’ll be a leader in introducing advanced safety technologies to provide you with added confidence – including an advanced brake override system that automatically cuts engine power when the accelerator and brake pedals are both engaged. We’ll ask distinguished independent safety experts to ensure that the enhanced quality controls we’re putting in place conform to best industry practices. We continue to produce many of the best vehicles on the road. Many of you who are bringing your vehicles to our dealers for repair continue to tell us that, and we deeply appreciate your loyalty. More than anything, we want you to feel safe, knowing the vehicles you are driving are among the safest, most reliable in the world. Sincerely,

Jim Lentz President and Chief Operating Officer Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.
