Councilwoman Hatcher begins mayoral bid The 2011 mayoral campaign may have a Hatcher on the ballot providing that Councilwoman Ragen Hatcher is able to garner the support needed to run for the office. Hatcher filed the necessary paperwork to create a mayoral exploratory committee in order to receive citizen input as to the role of city government. Hatcher, who was elected as an at-large member of the city council in 2007 is the eldest daughter of former mayor Richard Hatcher. Hatcher is an attorney and also has a MBA degree. She was joined by supporters who accompanied her to the Lake County Election Registration Board on Monday, March 16 to file to establish the exploratory committee. Following her filing Hatcher met with the press to discuss her potential candidacy. Hatcher said that her love for Gary and her concern about the city’s future was the motivating factor for her decision to form the exploratory committee. “In 2007, Gary citizens elected and entrusted me to serve as an at-large councilwoman on the Gary City Council. I have taken this position to heart and spoken out on issues, which are of great concern to Gary citizens. These issues include alarm at the city’s high unemployment rate, crime problems, poverty and the lack of investment,” said Hatcher. “Every day I receive phone calls and emails from men and women who are troubled and anxious about basic conditions in Gary.” Hatcher said that Gary citizens pay the highest tax rate in Indiana. According to Hatcher citizens are now being forced to pay for services, which were once provided through local government. “Based on all this, it is clear to me that people in Gary want a new kind of leadership and a new kind of government that acts with honesty and integrity to address the issues that plague our community. Gary citizens want better and deserve better,” said Hatcher
“I simply cannot sit by any longer while our city, the largest in the county with the most resources, continues to suffer, she continued. Hatcher said she can identify with and joins in the concern of Gary citizens who
are alarmed by what is happening in the city. Our children are being shot and killed in senseless acts of violence. Despite what many see as a hopeless situation Hatcher says that many of Gary’s problems can be addressed by someone who posses
and exudes strong leadership. The municipal election will be held in 2011. Mayor Rudy Clay is expected to seek another term. Lake County Commissioner Roosevelt Allen is also being mentioned as a potential mayoral candidate.

Haiti debt relief bill authored by Congresswoman Maxine Waters passes the House From Port-au-Prince to the Capitol to the White House, she continues to lead efforts to help Haiti recover and rebuild
done to provide all Haitians with food and clean water, secure shelter, and economic livelihood.” Congresswoman Waters was among a select group of Members of Congress at an event yesterday at the White House with President Obama and Haitian President René Prevál, having been invited in recognition of her leadership on assistance for Haiti. Also attending were representatives of non-governmental organizations and foundations involved in the relief effort, Haitian-American community leaders and members of Urban Search and Rescue teams from Los Angeles and other cities.
The House of Representatives passed the Debt Relief for Earthquake Recovery in Haiti Act (H.R. 4573), authored by Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), last night. This legislation directs the United States to seek the cancellation of Haiti’s debts to the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the InterAmerican Development Bank (IDB) and other multilateral development institutions. The Senate is expected to adopt the Congresswoman’s bill this week, clearing the way for President Obama to sign it into law. “I am pleased that my bill to cancel Haiti’s debt held by multilateral development institutions is set to become law. Debt relief is essential for Haiti’s future. However, we must also keep in mind the immediate needs of survivors who, without adequate shelter, will be further subjected to the elements and to disease during the upcoming rainy season. I applaud the efforts of our government, military, and charitable organizations for the assistance they have provided thus far, and I will be doing everything in my power to continue to work with them to alleviate the suffering and attend to the basic needs of the Haitian people.” Having returned from Haiti earlier this week – her second trip there since the earthquake in January – the Congresswoman continues to sound the alarm about the need to urgently provide more shelter to the hundreds of thousands of Haitians whose homes were destroyed. Many Haitians are living outdoors in makeshift camps, and the upcoming rainy season is putting them at greater risk of flooding and disease. The Congresswoman has repeatedly called on the international community to deliver and distribute durable tents to Haitians and has raised the issue with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and other officials. “My second trip to Haiti since the earthquake only reaffirms what I’ve long known – the situation for hundreds of thousands of homeless Haitians is going to rapidly deteriorate when the heavy rains and hurricanes soon begin,” said Congresswoman Waters. “Malaria, typhoid, scabies and other highly infectious and deadly diseases are going to spread like wildfire unless a comprehensive plan is implemented to acquire thousands more durable shelter units and set them up safely, sustainably, and immediately.” During her trip to Haiti last weekend, Congresswoman Waters: • Met with the U.S. Ambassador to Haiti Kenneth Merten, the
United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Ambassador Lou Luck, who is coordinating on-the-ground humanitarian efforts, and the UN Coordifor Humanitarian nator Relief; • Brought food and supplies to Cité Soleil, the poorest neighborhood of Port-au-Prince, an area where residents have received little or no assistance from relief groups since the earthquake; • Reviewed a food distribution operation in Pétionville led by a non-governmental organization; • Toured a large camp that is housing approximately 12,000 survivors and was taken by locals to a camp unknown to relief workers where 700 people live. After Congresswoman Waters alerted USAID of the camp’s presence, USAID entered the camp into its database so it could be evaluated and will receive relief supplies moving forward; • Discussed contracting opportunities for local workers with 150 Haitian business leaders and the USAID Contracting Officer, and reviewed some of the “jobs for cash” programs currently under way; • Visited a temporary shelter demonstration site, showcasing different forms of shelter; • Attended a “cluster” meeting at Bo-Jeux Parc where recovery and response efforts are coordinated and saw an army-grade medical tent she secured during her previous visit to Haiti being used by medical care providers to deliver babies; and • Brought a U.S. seismologist to the country to study aftershocks and share information with Haitians about the potential for future disasters and what can be done to prevent widespread devastation. “What really resonated with me during this trip was the stark reality of just how long it will take Haiti to recover and rebuild,” said Congresswoman Waters. “Many areas of Port-au-Prince are still not being regularly serviced by relief workers – and some camps are subsisting completely on their own. The coordination and organizational efforts are clearly under way, but I am well aware that it remains a work-inprogress. Much more must be

Methodist Hospitals receives American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines Silver Performance Achievement Award Methodist Hospitals has received the American Stroke Association’s Get With The GuidelinesSM–Stroke (GWTG–Stroke) Silver Performance Achievement Award. The award recognizes Methodist Hospitals’ commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations. “With a stroke, time lost is brain lost, and the GWTG– Stroke Silver Performance Achievement Award addresses the
important element of time,” said Sanjiv Maniar, MD, Medical Director, Stroke Program. Methodist Hospitals has developed a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the emergency department. This includes always being equipped to provide brain imaging scans, having neurologists available to conduct patient evaluations, and using clotbusting medications when appropriate. To receive the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Silver Perfor-
mance Achievement Award, Methodist Hospitals consistently complied for at least one year with the requirements in the Get With The Guidelines–Stroke program. These include aggressive use of medications like tPA, antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, DVT prophylaxis, cholesterol reducing drugs, and smoking cessation. This twelvemonth evaluation period is the second in an ongoing self-evaluation by the hospital to continually reach the 85 percent compliance level needed to sustain this award.
Gary fire fighters take their protest to the city council Gary firefighters attended a meeting of the city council Tuesday, March 16 to protest the possible lay off of 50 firefighters. The protest coincided with the city administration’s decision to close three fire stations. In an effort to address the city’s budget deficit the administration closed fire station No.6 located on 5th Ave, station No. 11 located at 8010 Indian Boundary in the city’s Miller section and station No. 10 located at 3310 Virginia St. in the Glen Park section of Gary. Firefighters are opposing proposed wage cuts and furloughs that are being advocated by the city administration in their effort to close the city’s budget deficit. The administration is asking that firefighters take an 8 percent reduction in pay and voluntary furlough days. If the city is successful in laying off firefighters it would seriously reduce the number of available
workers which currently stands at 237. Fourth District Councilwoman Carolyn Rogers during the council meeting voiced her opposition to the layoffs. Rogers who recently spearheaded the renovation of a fire station in her district said that public safety was an important issue and the cuts would severely jeopardize the safety of the citizens. Gary Firefighters Union Local 359 president Raynard Robinson echoed Rogers’ sentiments saying that the layoffs would put the city in danger. He said that a reduction in personnel would cause the fire department to provide inadequate protection for the city. He said each station is working with only one fire engine Firefighters have been dealing with the effects of the budget crunch for several years. In addition to the deteriorating conditions of the various fire stations
Tax questions cause problem for judicial candidate Federal investigators are believed to be looking at tax breaks that may have benefitted a candidate for Lake Circuit Judge. Unnamed sources say that investigators are reviewing documents involving Merrillville Town Judge George Paras, who is a candidate for Lake Circuit Court Judge. Records indicate that Paras received a homestead exemption for his home in Merrillville and property he owns in Hobart. Paras is denying that he got an exemption on the Hobart property and records indicate that he paid over $7,000 in back taxes on that property which is occupied by his sister. Lake County Auditor Peggy Katona is also conducting her own investigation into the matter. When she discovered the exempThe Gary Crusader
tions she said she immediately had them removed. Katona said she had the homestead exemption on the Hobart property removed in 2008 and was shocked to find that it had been reinstated. Federal authorities are looking in to whether property taxes are adjusted in order to help some one who may be politically connected. Paras’ sister, Theresa Christos resides in the Hobart property and she worked in the auditor’s office fore over ten years. So far she has not been implicated in the matter. Both Katona and Lake County Treasurer John Petalas said they did not do anything to aid Paras in reducing his taxes.
firefighters have had to purchase their own supplies. Robinson said that firefighters are faced with having to work with less equipment when they are out fighting fires. Although the council has the authority to either raise or reduce the pay of police and fire personnel they took no action regarding the issue at their meeting. Robinson said that he and members of the union are continuing to meet with the city administration in an effort to resolve the matter. He said that he met with members of the administration prior to Tuesday’s council meeting and had a new proposal to present to his members.
“Methodist Hospitals has long been focused on improving the quality of stroke care in The Region. Implementing the Get With The Guidelines–Stroke program is another step in our continuous commitment to be the very best when it comes to providing specialty services in Northwest Indiana. This recognition is a testament to the hard work of our physicians and employees,” said Ian McFadden, President/CEO, Methodist Hospitals. “The American Stroke Association commends Methodist Hospitals for its success in implementing standards of care and protocols,” said Lee H. Schwamm, M.D., Vice-Chair of the national Get With the Guidelines Steering Committee and Vice-Chair of the Neurology department and director of acute stroke services at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. “The full implementation of acute care and secondary prevention recommendations and guidelines is a critical step in saving the lives and improving outcomes of stroke patients.” The number of acute ischemic stroke patients eligible for treatment is expected to grow over the next decade due to increasing
stroke incidence and a large aging population. According to the American Stroke Association, each year approximately 795,000 people suffer a stroke — 610,000 are first attacks and 185,000 are recurrent. Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States is suffering from a stroke. This deadly condition accounts for 1 out of every 18 deaths in the United States. Get With The Guidelines– Stroke uses the “teachable moment,” the time soon after a patient has had a stroke, when they are most likely to listen to and follow their healthcare professionals’ guidance. Studies demonstrate that patients who are taught how to manage their risk factors while still in the hospital reduce their risk of a second heart attack or stroke. Through Get With The Guidelines–Stroke, customized patient education materials are made available at the point of discharge, based on patients’ individual risk profiles. The takeaway materials are written in an easy-to-understand format and are available in English and Spanish. In addition, the GWTG Patient Management Tool provides access to up-to-date cardiovascular and stroke science at the point of care.

EDITORIAL WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH March is Women’s History Month. The honoring of Women began with the first International Women’s Day in 1911. In 1979, the school district of Sonoma, California, participated in Women’s History Week, an event designed around the week of March 8 (International Women’s Day). In 1981, responding to the growing popularity of the event, Congress passed a resolution recognizing Women’s History Week. This week was well received, and soon after, schools across the country began to have their own local celebrations. Other state departments of education began to encourage celebrations of National Women’s History Week as a way to promote equality among the sexes in the classroom. In 1987 Congress expanded the focus to a whole month. In 2001, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Rep. Barbara Mikulski (D-Maryland) co-sponsored the first Joint Congressional Resolution proclaiming a “Women’s History Month”. (Wikipedia). Today, Women’s History Month is celebrated all over the United States. Honoring women became necessary because a lot of people just weren’t aware of the contributions women have made, and continue to make, to society. Everyone recognizes the role that women play as mothers, but actually, many people, especially men, felt that women’s value started and stopped at that point. It’s hard to believe that at one time women were not allowed to vote or to own property. Fortunately, today, there is a growing appreciation of the wide range of roles that women play in today’s society. It is heartening to see social growth of his magnitude, where people come to understand the important contributions of a segment of the population. It’s interesting that people didn’t always understand the value of women because, if people had paid attention, there have always been dynamic women who have contributed to a variety of important causes in America and around the world. Among African Americans, the earlier heroines responsible for racial progress included Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Ida B. Wells Barnett, Mary McLeod Bethune, Madame C.J. Walker, just to name a few. Today, we can cite Rosa Parks, Oprah Winfrey, Dorothy Height, Whoopie Goldberg, Fannie Lou Hamer, Angela Davis, Nikki Giovanni, Sonja Sanchez, Dorothy Leavell, Linda Johnson Rice, Melody Spann Cooper, Dr. Carol Adams, Valerie Jarrett, Rep. Constance “Connie” Howard, Shirley Chisholm, Dr. Margaret Burroughs, First Lady Michelle Obama, Cheryle Jackson and many other women too numerous to name! We look forward to the day when all “isms,” such as sexism, racism, etc. disappear. Until that time, however, we will continue a need to set aside special time to focus on certain segments of the population in order to realize their importance to the functioning of society. Please take time to consider the huge contributions women have made to American society and to the world this month! 4

Nosing Around By Nosey EDITOR’S NOTE: The following column is a gossip column. We ask that items contained herein be judged by individuals that read it as such and not as documented facts gathered by the newsgathering personnel of this publication.
EMPTY THEM POCKETS Most folks are betting that the state won’t see a dime of the $108 million “Hollywood” Bob Pastrick was ordered to pay last week. Federal Judge James Moody levelled the fine on Pastrick, former East Chicago City Councilman Frankie Kolinzas and Pastrick aide James Fife in a lawsuit that was brought against them by former Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter. Carter’s suit was based on the illegal activities of the Pastrick administration during 2003 where they were
accused of trading votes for sidewalk repairs and tree trimming in various districts. Several members of the E.C. City Council went to jail behind this scandal and though “Hollywood Bob” escaped criminal indictment he and his cronies were hit with a civil suit. Now that the judgment has been rendered it’s going to be interesting to see if the government will collect on the fine. Don’t think so. More than likely since the suit was filed Pastrick and the others involved have been working overtime to hide their assets from the government. It wouldn’t surprise Nosey if Pastrick and crew began hiding their assets before the trial began. By now their assets are so far hidden from the feds that the efforts to claim them will far exceed “Hollywood Bob’s” life. At 82 years old it is possible that the
former mayor could go on to glory before there is a penny collected toward the judgment so good luck collecting the bucks cuz “Hollywood Bob” and company done made sure that the cupboard is bare. –Nosey LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE Word reached Nosey that Mayor Rudy Clay and Calumet Township Board member Ron Matlock went toe to toe and face to face at a recent political fundraiser. Word is Matlock went off on Clay he when he told someone that Matlock was supportive of Mayor Thomas Mc Dermott Jr. in his effort to block the city of Gary in getting a land based casino. Rumor has it that Matlock said that Clay was a #$*& lie and
after that it was on. These guys can’t get over the fact that they both lost county elections. Clay the county Democratic chairmanship and Matlock the Lake County Recorder’s office. Both say that they have gotten over their loss but that ain’t the truth. Clay wants to get even with Matlock and Matlock who is running for reelection as a member of the Calumet Township Board says he is out to get Clay even though he ought to be focusing on his race, there’s just something about Rudy that gets under his skin and he just can’t let it go. –Nosey -
IT’S ON BABY The race that is shaping up as the one to watch is the Calumet Township Assessor’s
race. The combatants are Jill Williams, a former assessor employee and Jackie Collins, the chief deputy assessor. Collins has been endorsed by her boss Booker Blumenberg and Williams has the blessings of Mayor Rudy Clay. What makes this race so interesting is that it could go either way. Although Collins has the support of Blumenberg – the question is whether his coat tails are long enough to sweep her into office. Meanwhile, Williams, a precinct committeeman in the First District has garnered the support of the mayor and has also, as it appears, to have piqued the interest of the political movers and shakers in the Griffith community. What was once viewed as a cake walk for the incumbent has now developed into an interesting race. As always Nosey advises its readers to stay tuned.

How Sweet the Sound, a national program created by Verizon Wireless, invites choirs affiliated with a church or other church organization (as defined by the organization’s tax-exempt ID number) within one of the 14 tour cities to enter (visit The Gary Crusader
www.HowSweetTheSound.com for specific geography). Choirs must submit an application and audition video no longer than three minutes. All registration forms and audition videos must be received by May 17. The audition video may be submitted by mail, uploaded online, or dropped off at participating Verizon Wireless Communications Stores. Participating local stores include: Crystal Lake, 87th Street, Addision, Arlington Heights, Aurora, Batavia, Bloomingdale, Bolingbrook, Bradley, Brickyard, Bucktown, Butterfield Plaza, Calumet City, Crestwood, Dekalb, Elston, Galesburg, Gurnee Retail Store, Hillside, Hodgkins, Joliet, Lake in the Hills, Lake Zurich, Lasalle, Lincolnwood, Little Village, Machesney Park, Matteson, McHenry, Merrillville, Michigan Avenue, Millenium, Naperville, Niles, Norridge, North Aurora, North Halsted, Northbrook, Orland Park, Palatine, Plainfield, Promenade Pointe, Romeoville, Schaumburg, Skokie, South Barrington, South Elgin, Vernon Hills, Wheaton, Wheeling, Willowbrook and Woodfield. Small and large choirs can enter the competition. The Few Voices category is for choirs consisting of six to 35 participants, while the Many Voices category is for choirs with 36 to 100 participants. Audition videos will be re-
viewed locally by professional music producers or Gospel radio personalities in each city. The judges will select up to 16 choirs – eight from each category – from each stop of the tour. The video submissions of the 16 choirs will be posted on www.HowSweetTheSound.com where members of the community can vote for their favorite choirs. Once the online voting is complete, four choirs from each category will be selected to perform onstage in the regional event this fall where two choirs, one from each category, will win $10,000. One overall winner will be selected at each regional concert, and each choir member from the overall winning choir will also receive a Verizon Wireless phone and a $50 gift card. The overall winning choir from each city will also advance to the grand finale where they will compete to win more than $50,000 in cash and prizes. In addition, the Verizon Wireless V CAST People’s Choice Award will be given to the choir who captures the heart of the audience at each regional performance and at the grand finale. The V CAST People’s Choice Award winners will receive $5,000. Additional details will be announced as the selection process gets underway, including tour dates. All details about the entry

He pitched for the Cubs from 1966-73 and 1982-83 and then retired in 1983 with 284 career wins and 3,192 strikeouts. A three-time National League All-Star, Jenkins’ number 31 was retired by the Cubs in 2009. He will return to U. S. Steel Yard for the second straight summer on Wednesday, June 30, throwing batting practice to lucky fans before the game. Limited single tickets are available for the “Meet the Team Luncheon” at $50 for the general public and $40 for 2010 RailCats

I am not speaking about the spirit with which one high school football team or basketball team challenges another or the courage that is required for a young high school wrestler to face an intimidating opponent. Instead, I’m referring to the economic challenges facing school corporations throughout Indiana. Budget cuts not only threaten the quality of the classroom experience, they also put “extracurricular” activities, such as high school sports, at risk. In reality, referring to activity

programs (such as athletics, band, drama, debate, etc.) as “extracurricular” is a misnomer. They actually are “co-curricular” due to the many life lessons that one learns through participation. The role that athletics play in our state’s high schools is not to be taken for granted, nor is it to be taken lightly. Numerous research studies prove that studentathletes are more successful than students who choose not to participate in athletics. For example, a comprehensive statewide study conducted over a three-year period in North Carolina showed dramatic differences between student-athletes and nonathletes in five areas: Athletes, Non-Athletes: *Grade Point Average - 2.86, 1.96; *Absences in 180-day school year - 6.52, 12.57; *Discipline Referrals - 30.5 percent, 40.6 percent; *Dropout Rate - 0.7 percent, 8.9 percent; *Graduation Rate - 99.56 percent, 94.66 percent. Evidence of the value of activity and athletic programs is more than anecdotal. Consider these facts: *In the publication, No Child Left Behind: the facts about 21st Century Learning, published by the United States Department of Education, it was reported that students who spent no time in extracurricular activities were 49 percent more likely to use drugs and 37 percent more likely to become teenage parents. *Researchers writing in a 2004 article published in the American Journal of Health Behavior showed that students participating in organized high school sports were 25 percent less likely to be current cigarette smokers. *A Harvard Educational Review article in 2002 found that participation in after school activities appears to be one of the few interventions that benefit low-status, disadvantaged high school students as much or more than their more advantaged peers. (Coincidently, these co-curricular activities are also instrumental in teaching essential life skills to teenagers who live in single parent homes, which is 30 percent of all the households in Indiana.) Certainly, at the Indiana High School Athletic Association, Inc. (IHSAA) we are more focused on athletic participation than on other activities, so many of my thoughts are centered on the value of education-based athletics in our schools. However, I believe these concepts are applicable to other co-curricular activities as well. Not only do high school athlet-
