T&B Tube relocates from Illinois to Gary By J. Coyden Palmer For the second time in the past year, a business from Illinois is packing up and moving to Gary permanently. During a press conference at City Hall on April 1, Jack Jones, president of T&B Tube, announced he will be bringing his familyowned business to Gary’s 1st District later this year. The business, which makes steel tubes, will also be looking to hire 80-120 residents over the next few years. The move makes sense for the company financially and logistically. “We have simply run out of space at our current location and in order to grow our business, we needed the space financial incentives Gary offered,” Jones said. Currently, T&B is operating in a facility that is 89,000 square feet. The property they are moving into will have 200,000 square feet. Jones said many of his employees already live in Northwest Indiana, so this will lessen their commute, thus, leading to better production. “The people we will be looking to hire need only to have a good work attitude, an ability to learn and be able to come to work every day,” Jones said. “We will teach them everything they need to know. Our positions on average will pay about $15 an hour.” Bo Kemp, executive director of the city’s economic development committee, said

Residents provide input on Choice Neighborhood By David Denson Residents of the Glen Park and Colonial Garden communities were given an opportunity to voice concerns and raise questions regarding the fate of their respective communities during a forum held Monday, March 30 at Ivy Tech Community College. In 2014, the City of Gary, Legacy Foundation and the Gary Economic Development Commission were awarded a planning grant for the University Park East neighborhood and the 78 scattered site public housing units (Colonial Gardens #1 and #2) owned and managed by the Gary Housing Authority located within the neighborhood. “This is a very stakeholder driven process. We want your feedback, you’re going to tell us what you want to see as opposed to saying what to do,” said Deidra Campbell, City of Gary Department of Commerce Director. Clean-Up Committee continues long after TV report By Carmen M. Woodson-Wray When ABC News Anchor Peter Jennings did a television series entitled “In Search of America” a few years ago he came to Gary, Indiana and reported to the nation how horrible the city looked. This did not sit well with City Councilman-at-Large Roy Pratt and he knew he needed to do something about how Jennings portrayed the city. He put together a group and they formed The Gary Community Clean-Up Committee in 2003. Quite a few citizens came out to be a part of the committee. They were all in agreement that they needed to correct the impression Jennings revealed about the city and do something about it. Pratt became the chairman of the committee and Frances Bush the cochair. Even before Councilmanat-Large Ron Brewer was on the council he too was a member of the committee. Bush said the group’s first cleaning project was the exits and entry points of the city. They started with Grant Street’s highway 80/94 area and Broadway. The

group collected as much trash as they could possibly gather and the city’s General Services Department would pick up the piles of debris they made. Bush said, “We did this once a year, always on weekends from 8 a.m. to noon. It would look very good once we completed the task, but in time the debris was there

again.” After a while, Bush said the committee decided to handle their project in a different manner. She said they decided to clean once a month and that went on for a while. “Then we decided we would take on one district per month starting with the 1st District usually in the month of

They also asked the City Council members of each district to help them when they were in their area and invite the citizens of the district to help as well. Bush said that too worked out very well in cleaning up. She said, “All of the councilpersons were involved and made sure the citizens in their ar-

eas pitched in as well.” The committee meets once a month on the 3rd Thursday of each month at City Hall. Councilman Brewer said, “I became a member of the committee because I wanted to make a difference and ever since I’ve seen a big difference in the way the city looks.”

Gary will share in $5 million Knight Cities Challenge awards Thirty-two innovative projects will share $5 million as winners of the first Knight Cities Challenge – one of the winners is in Gary. An initiative of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the challenge attracted more than 7,000 ideas to make the 26 communities where Knight invests more vibrant places to live and work. It asked innovators of all kinds to answer the question: What’s your best idea to make cities more successful? The 32 winners proposed a host of ideas, from training a new community of Detroit rehabbers who will cooperate to combat blight and reactivate vacant buildings, to creating a subscription service that celebrates Akron with a monthly boxed selection of local goods and experiences, from mobilizing city leaders to hold monthly ceremonies for St. Paul newcomers where they are presented with a warm winter hat, to fostering conversation among strangers by installing Charlotte’s signature porch swings in public spaces. “Not only did the Knight Cities Challenge uncover a wealth of new ideas to make our cities more successful, it will help strengthen a network of civic innovators who are taking hold of the future of their cities,” said Carol Coletta, Knight Foundation vice president for community and national initiatives. 2

REBUILD FOUNDATION WAS awarded $650,000 in the Knight Cities Challenge for their ArtHouse: A Social Kitchen. The City of Gary proposes to transform a vacant building into a cultural hub that showcases visual and culinary arts. Partnering with artist Theaster Gates, the City will use this public space as a catalyst to develop a cultural district and promote urban revitalization. “These important connections will help create a pipeline for new approaches to city transformation and spark the type of collaboration vital to growing and spreading good ideas.” All the winning projects focus on at least one of three drivers of city success: (1) Talent: Ideas that help cities attract and keep the best and brightest; (2) Opportunity: Ideas that create economic prospects and break down divides; (3) Engagement: Ideas that spur connection and civic involvement. Winning projects are based in 12

Two projects focus on multiple Knight communities. The Gary winner and award amount is $650,000 by Rebuild Foundation for the ArtHouse: A Social Kitchen submitted by Lori Berko. The plan repurposes a vacant space in downtown Gary into a culinary incubator and café

designed to reinvigorate the downtown while creating jobs and opportunities for residents. The recent award of $650,000 in Knight Cities Challenges grants brings the total amount the Knight Foundation has invested in Gary to $4,306,064 since 2008. Open to any individual, business, government or nonprofit, the Knight Cities Challenge has just two rules: (1) A submission may come from anywhere, but the project must take place in or benefit one or more of the 26 communities

Wirt-Emerson and West Side surpass state’s graduation rate By Carmen M. Woodson-Wray In Lake County, 13 of 21 traditional high schools surpassed the state graduation rate of 89.8 percent. Surprisingly there are two schools in Gary that exceeded the state’s rate during the 2013-14 school year. They are Wirt-Emerson Visual and Performing Arts with a graduation rate of 100% and West Side Leadership Academy with 92%. Dr. Cheryl L. Pruitt, Superintendent of Schools credits Wirt-Emerson’s perfect graduation rate from its highly qualified educators, who she says take care in preparing their students for the future. Dr. Pruitt said, “It goes without saying that we are very proud of Wirt-Emerson’s accomplishment. It’s one of the only schools of its kind in Northern Indiana and they have been recognized by US News & World Report as one of the best high schools in the nation.” Dr. Adrian Richie, Jr., principal of Wirt-Emerson said this was very, very rare for the school to have a graduation rate of 100 percent. He said for this to happen everything had to fall into place, the students had to be focused and

NOT ONLY DID 100% of the Wirt-Emerson Visual and Performing Arts students for the 2014 school year graduate, but some of the students like the young lady performing a musical presentation during the graduation ceremony received art certifications. had to understand what they were up against. He said, “We were very fortunate to have students that understood this. When they reach the high school ranks they tend to become very focused on graduating on time. In addition to the state required degrees they also got out of

WEST SIDE LEADERSHIP Academy’s class of 2014 prepare to graduate with 92% of their classmates during their ceremony. here with an art certification. That class really put it together.” Dr. Richie said this is a rare and difficult thing because the students come in as a cohort of freshmen. “You have to take that group of students and follow them for four years as freshmen. That group has to stay together and get everything right to graduate 100 percent. That’s what makes it rare,” he said. Although the 2014 graduating class were not aware that they had

a perfect graduating class before the state officially said so, it means a lot to the 2015 class to see what they accomplished. Dr. Richie said they are very determined to hit that mark also. Dr. Richie said the state just did their preliminary projected report card grade for this year and it seems Wirt-Emerson’s high school section will receive an “A” and the middle school section will receive a “C” which averages out to be a

“B.” He said, “So every year we have improved. The high school and the middle school have come up. You ask what the secret is. It’s focused students and focused teachers. We have to know where every student stands.” Another Gary school that has excelled in graduating students during the 2014 school year was West Side Leadership Academy with 92%. Terrance Little, principal at West Side, said they did it by paying attention to their student’s needs and built relationships with them. Little said, “Once we did that it let them know the importance of them getting their diplomas and furthering their education. They believed in us, listened to us and so they went on and did what they had to do.” Little said they were sad that they were not at 100 percent and that they lost some students. He said, “Our goal is 100 percent. We must graduate each student that comes through our doors. “So the graduation class was happy for themselves, but they were charged with making sure their friends graduate. We turned them from students to leaders.”

EDITORIAL

EDITORIAL FROM JULIA TO EMPIREWHAT DO BLACK PEOPLE REALLY WANT? A lot of buzz is circulating recently about a new television series – “Empire.” “Empire” was one of the most watched programs on television this past season, and the finale was a showstopper. Basically, the storyline revolves around a rapper turned music industry mogul played by veteran actor Terrance Howard. Co-starring with him is another veteran actor – Taraji P. Henson, who played Howard’s ex-wife, and who helped him with the business in the early days before it became really profitable. She allegedly took the fall for her husband and ended up spending 17 years in the slammer. The couple has three sons, two who are in the music business as performers, and the third a college trained businessman. There is something in “Empire” for everyone; you have miscegenation, in that one son is married to a white woman. You have homophobia – one son came out as gay. Ageism is involved – the youngest son had a girlfriend who is a “cougar.” You have divorce, from rags to riches progress, betrayal, murder, intrigue, girl fights, great music and more all wrapped up in a package of glamour and more glamour. A stellar cast (and crew) has graced the show including, but not limited to, Patti LaBelle, Jennifer Hudson, Debbie Allen, Mario Van Peeples, Porsha Taylor, Snoop Lion (Dogg), Gabourey Sidibe, Jussie Smollett, Yazz, and the recently excised cast member Malik Yoba. The co-creator of Empire is the award-winning Black filmmaker, Lee Daniels. Empire has its detractors, of course, and one of the main critics is Dr. Boyce Watkins, known as “The People’s Scholar” who has called the show “Ghettofied Coonery.” He has some legitimate concerns about the images that are portrayed about Black people. He basically said, in so many words, that he is embarrassed watching white people watching Black people enjoy this type of fare. In fact, he is not alone – some of the staunchest critics of the show have been African Americans. At the same time, other African Americans are wildly enthusiastic about it. It is ironic that the Fox Network is the producer of “Empire.” Fox is known as being biased and not necessarily progressive when it comes to issues of race, and to see one of its biggest draws this season be a Black program is quite ironic, interesting, and unexpected. “Empire is creating new career avenues for a number of Black industry hopefuls as well as veterans, and a lot of Black people are on track to make quite a bit of money if the trend continues. This does not seem to be enough, however, for “conscious” Black critics, which is understandable, considering the fact that the show depicts Black people in less than a 100% positive light. But then, what show on television depicts any one group in a 100% light? African Americans have complained about being locked out from any real participation in popular entertainment, yet when an opportunity comes along that offers something different, we complain. Back in the day, people complained about the first sitcom that featured a Black woman, “Julia,” played by Diane Carroll, because she was a single parent. And then people complained about “Good Times” because it took place in “the projects.” People complained about “The Cosby Show” because it was said that it was unrealistic, because it depicted a Black doctor, played by Bill Cosby, and his lawyer wife, played by Phylicia Rashad. (As it turns out, this wasn’t unrealistic at all, in that a number of Black couples mirrored that scenario). Black people also complained about the Oprah Winfrey show (too white); “Selma” (turned off by yet another show depicting Blacks in a suffering mode); “The Book of Negroes,” (another offering about suffering Blacks), “12 Years a Slave” (suffering Blacks) and many other television shows and movies too numerous to name. Let’s face facts: television and movies as they are today are not designed to be 100% perfect for any ethnic group, especially Blacks, and they usually have a “socio-political” agenda. The sad fact is that when Black people create, we complain about our productions as well. Will Smith’s fantastic Sci-Fi film, “After Earth,” bit the dust without much fanfare, as did Tim Reid’s “Once Upon a Time...When We Were Colored,” yet the “Housewives of Atlanta” continues to thrive. The question is this - just what do we want? What will satisfy the community? Do we need a taste adjustment? The answer remains to be uncovered. A luta continua. 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Gov. Mike Pence’s Religious Freedom bill Dear Editor: I am writing to join in the chorus of outrage against Gov. Mike Pence’s signing into law the socalled Religious Freedom bill overwhelmingly passed by Republican members of the Indiana General Assembly. As someone who has stood for a lifetime on behalf of the civil rights for all people, I can tell you that this bill has nothing to do neither with religion nor with freedom. It is another blatant attack on gay and lesbian American citizens denying their most basic constitutional rights as American citizens. Despite calls from large and small businesses, celebrities, the Mayor of Indianapolis and the State of Indiana’s tourism board, Mike Pence took his pen and signed into law yet another layer of discrimination that makes Indiana the face of Mississippi in the 1960’s. Already businesses have announced their intent to reduce investment in Indiana including the tech giant Salesforce. Religion is once more being used as cover for official hatred;

the power to discriminate has nothing to do with freedom but everything to do with arrogance, ugliness and division Audra McDonald, famed Broadway star said it best in a message to the Governor. “Some in my band are gay and we have 2 gigs in your state next month. Should we call ahead to make sure the hotel accepts us? Or could you send us a list of where it’s ok for us to go? Might the law apply to me? (I’m black).” To underscore my opposition, I publicly join with former NBA champion Charles Barkley and call upon the NCAA President Mark Emmert to move next week’s semifinal rounds out of Indianapolis. Richard Gordon Hatcher, Former mayor, Gary, IN

NOSING AROUND

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following column is a gossip column. We ask that items contained herein be judged by individuals that read it as such and not as documented facts gathered by the newsgathering personnel of this publication.

SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME…MAYBE Nosey hears that some members of the Gary Precinct Organization may be po’ed about an item appearing in this column last week. In “Got to Pay to Play” Nosey took the organization to task for charging candidate fees that some felt was exorbitant to participate in the endorsement caucus. Although word reached Nosey that much of the money raised went for the expense of holding the meeting, the precinct organization isn’t as mad as some of the candidates who paid to participate, but when all is said and done, felt they didn’t get a bang for their buck in terms of an endorsement. - Nosey -

THE REST OF THE STORY It seems the King name is still popular in some political circles. Word reached Nosey that Irene King, wife of former mayor Scott King, is a candidate for an at-large position on the Gary Common Council. Last weekend Irene King was the top vote-getter in the Gary Democratic Precinct

Organization endorsement process. While she may have the endorsement of the political establishment, she will still have to work to get the only endorsement that really counts on May 5. Nosey hears that she has been seen vigorously campaigning around the city and may have a good shot at the brass ring. - Nosey -

CLOSE THE BOOKS Rumor has it the board of the Gary Public Library is seriously considering closing several of the system’s libraries. Financial problems and underutilization of the facilities are said to be reasons for the proposed closings. Recently, the Nose heard that the board is considering closing at least three to four of the branches and leav-

ing the main branch as the only library. Apparently the idea of turning the main branch into a cultural center has been scrapped as the board continues to come up with a workable plan for the library system. Look for some major push back from the community if the library board tries to go through with its plans. Stay tuned, ‘cause it may get a little rough. - Nosey -

Freeman-Wilson said she felt the need to set the record straight, she said Gary was open to all people, the religious freedom law was in the process of being fixed and there were opportunities for new and old businesses to open up shop in the city. She playfully chided Chicago’s mayor. “I can appreciate Mayor Emanuel trying to get businesses to his city, but at the end of the day, Chicago is still in Illinois and Illinois is not financially business friendly,” she said with a laugh. “We believe that the success of businesses like T&B will be our best recruiter of other Illinois businesses.” Kemp and the mayor also noted that Gary already has the infrastructure in place to support many industrial businesses, which will be another big draw. The mayor said an industrial district like the 1st District is something other businesses have contacted the city to inquire about—she believes these types of businesses also fit with Gary’s historic identity. Councilwoman Mildred Shannon praised Freeman-Wilson for continuing to push the city on a forward path. She said the people in her district need good paying jobs and she believes the mayor’s www.garycrusader.com

Jones said the comprehensive financial package offered by Gary will allow him to move his company’s heavy equipment in an economically responsible way. He said without the incentives there

would be no way he could afford the moving costs. “The great thing about it is once we move here, we are here to stay because our moving costs are so expensive. I think that is where the city really will benefit because we will be a business here for generations,” Jones said.

TEDxCountyLineRoad seeks speakers for ‘A Revolution of Sorts’ Do you have an idea worth spreading? Share it with the TEDx community NOMINATION/SUBMISSION DEADLINE: April 6, 2015 The committee of curators for Northwest Indiana’s first TEDx conference—TEDxCounty—LineRoad—seeks the next dynamic group of speakers who will inform, inspire, surprise and delight during the second annual event, scheduled for fall 2015 at County Line Apple Orchard in Hobart. Potential speakers need to submit videos of their TED talk by April 6, 2015 at www.TEDxCountyLineRoad.com. Those who want to nominate a presenter with an idea worth spreading can find the speaker recommendation form at www.TEDxCountyLineRoad.com and should describe why this person would be well-suited to energize Northwest Indiana. Nominations are also due by April 6, 2015. In addition to speakers, the committee is also seeking artists and musicians to perform on stage during the next TEDxCountyLineRoad. TEDxCountyLineRoad will follow the theme of “A Revolution of Sorts” in 2015. Icons such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Steve Jobs have sparked revolu-

tions and disrupted the status quo.TEDxCountyLine Road wants to connect with fellow revolutionaries in Northwest Indiana. These are people who are making a splash in their respective fields, who don’t care about the norm and who are blazing their own trails while inspiring others. The TEDx committee will shortlist candidates and finalists will be invited in for personal interviews and auditions with the committee. Speakers and all participants of TEDxCountyLineRoad will be announced thereafter. A volunteer group of young professionals, community leaders and stakeholders from Lake and Porter counties organized the inaugural TEDx CountyLineRoad, which was a half day-long event for an audience of 100 in November 2014 at the County Line Apple Orchard in Hobart. This group – many of the same activists who have worked to extend the South Shore rail line through Dyer – wants bright minds to present world-changing ideas that inspire and provoke meaningful conversations. Speakers at the first TEDx event in Northwest Indiana included LaPorte Mayor Blair Milo, Faith Church senior pastor Bob Bouwer, prominent economist Brian Wesbury, and Excellence by Design owner Norma Williams.

THE TEDx PROGRAM is designed to help communities, organizations and individuals to spark conversation and connection through local TED-like experiences. TEDx was created in the spirit of TED’s mission, “ideas worth spreading.” Norma Williams (above) gave a talk at recent conference on the power of tapping one’s passion to empower women in order to move away from an “island” mentality. Videos of their talks are posted at www.TEDxCountyLineRoad.com. “My TEDx journey was hands down the highlight of my 2014 year,” Williams said. “The opportunities, friendships and personal growth from that experience has surpassed my wildest expectations and opened doors I could not in 10 years of business. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.” TED is a global set of confer-

ences where experts share “Ideas Worth Spreading.” The TEDx Program is designed to help communities, organizations and individuals to spark conversation and connection through local TEDlike experiences. At TEDx events, a combination of live presenters and TED Talk videos spark deep conversation and connections at the local level. “We have enormous expectations for our second year of

TEDx,” said Dana Rifai, TEDxCountyLineRoad curator. “And the speakers will make the event. We hope a wide variety of personalities will come forward and shine on the stage for Northwest Indiana.” For more information visit www.TEDxCountyLineRoad.com email:tedxcountylineroad@gmail.c om as well as Instagram (TEDxCountyLineRoad) and Twitter (TEDxCountyLine).

Indiana “religious rights” law ignites nationwide firestorm

Vernon A. Williams One question for Indiana Governor Mike Pence: “What were you thinking?” Do you know how difficult it is to come up with an idea – any idea – that virtually NO ONE agrees with; a concept that unites bitter adversaries willing to put aside deep-rooted differences to oppose your concept? That’s hard to do. Well, the governor and his GOPcontrolled Indiana General Assembly did just that with the socalled Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). It’s a law that’s so ill-conceived that it was sternly renounced by virtually everyone across the country! Gov. Pence signed into existence the horrendous concept; which – in the minds of many - virtually offered protection for those who would choose to discriminate on religious grounds doing business with people whose gender or sexual orientation was deemed objectionable. Public outrage was only exacerbated when Pence went on national television for a live interview with George Stephanopoulos and refused to clearly answer questions on whether the law discriminated against gay, lesbian, transgender, and bi-sexual consumers. Pence poured salt into the wound by adding that while language of the law may be adjusted to make the intent clearer, there would be no change in content or substance. After an avalanche of criticism and rebuke from virtually every corner, including the Indianapolis Star which ran a huge, front page headline: FIX THIS NOW, the governor retreated from his hard stance – instructing legislators to return to their peers to iron out a more palatable language. So overwhelming was the nation’s response to this monumental blunder that the hashtag #boycottindiana shot to number one in the nation and the talk of the controversial Hoosier law attracted more social media attention than NCAA “March Madness” semi-finals games to determine the Final Four. www.garycrusader.com

Ironically, the Final Four will be played this weekend in Indianapolis. The NCAA went on record threatening to abandon future competitions scheduled in Indy if the SRSA remains. They weren’t alone. Conventions scheduled for Indianapolis have been cancelled or are being reviewed. Concerts and speaking engagements have been cancelled. Angie’s List nixed a $40 million expansion plan because of the RFRA. Nine major corporations – including Eli Lilly, Anthem and I.U. Health – have gone on record urging an immediate change. Indy Mayor Greg Ballard is pleading to the Indiana General Assembly to either repeal the law or correct its flaws. The City-County Council echoed the sentiment. Pence took out an advertisement in the Wall Street Journal defending the law and vowing to resist any substantive adjustment. But money talks. And with the state risking hundreds of millions of dollars in convention and tourism dollars, he would simply not be allowed the freedom to fight a battle he could never win. He reluctantly gave in. It’s a mess. And once again, the question looms for Gov. Pence – when you signed this law behind closed doors, which you awkwardly defend the prerogative of bigots

GOVERNOR MIKE PENCE signed Bill SEA 101 recently to ensure religious liberty is fully protected under Indiana law. National backlash against Indiana’s new religious freedom law has forced the governor to agree to clarify the text to ensure better protections for gays and lesbians. by refusing to support protective clauses, “What were you thinking?” Listening to talk radio in Indy, make no mistake. There have been a handful of Super-Saints who were praising the Lord for the legislature and the governor standing by their position. There was the familiar reference to scripture describing homosexuality as “an abomination.” A couple of radio callers even said they would switch from the Democratic to the Republican Party as a result of what they consider to be an affirmation of their faith. Where in the Bible do you find

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

Jesus discriminating against people or supporting intolerance and prejudice? You won’t. I think you’ll more likely find Christ teaching love and understanding and patience. Even when confronted with something deemed repugnant, we are taught to hate the sin but never the sinner. To my understanding, God loves everyone and wants us to love each other the same way without exception. Lastly, over-zealous Black church folk better watch aligning with anything that facilitates, permits or results in discrimination. When you sanction prejudice and mistreatment of one people, you place

in jeopardy the liberty of all people. African Americans are not that far removed from the Jim Crow era. We can ill afford the luxury of social amnesia, indifference or collusion with the enemy. Remember, but by the grace of God, we could be next on the list. The last thing you want to do is contribute to the proliferation of weapons of intolerance that may be stored for later use against you. Bottom line, the Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act needs to be substantially amended or repealed altogether. Plain and simple.

McCullough Academy advances in Technology contest In New York City, students from Gary’s Frankie Woods McCullough Academy for Girls win next step in Samsung Technology contest By Carmen M. Woodson-Wray The students and teachers from Frankie Woods McCullough Academy for Girls in Gary were a little nervous when they traveled to New York City to make their presentation for the 2015 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow event. They were one of the finalists in the Samsung competition—a nationwide search for school projects that apply Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) skills picked up in the classroom to address real-world issues facing students’ communities. Their nervousness turned into a win and now they are one of the top five finalists in the contest. The Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest encourages teachers and students to solve issues in their community using science, technology, engineering and math for a chance to win a share of $2 million in technology. The students at the McCullough Academy worked to build a greenhouse and community garden to grow fresh food in a food desert area. They were the winners of the Civic Engagement Award and received $25,000 in technology. With over 3,100 videos submitted from schools throughout the country, Pearl Prince, principal at Frankie Woods McCullough Academy for Girls said they were picked as the top 15 and Samsung invited two teachers and two students to come to New York to make their presentation. The student’s project centered on creating a community garden that could bring fresh produce to an area where fresh produce is not often found on supermarket shelves. They received help in learning about community gardening from Phil Gram from the Portage Community Garden Center. He came and talked to the students about planting community gardens. Teachers Yvonne Lucus helped with the science portion of the project and Gina Hannah did the math preparation. Prince said as the top five, they will now go to Washington D.C. next month to be judged. “We won $25,000 in technology equipment in New York which brings the school’s total to $60,000 from Samsung,” she said. She said the students at the www.garycrusader.com

The Future Chefs Contest allows students in grades K-5th to come up with recipes they make themselves that taste good but, more importantly, are healthy. According to Sodexo Foods, the concept of the event is to help educate the students about healthy eating habits. Principal Prince said there are four students from McCullough that are finalists in the contest. They are two 3rd graders Juanita Tointer and Bierra Barter, and two 4th graders Destiny Green and Makayla Bridgeman. Each student came up with their own recipe that they will make and present to Sodexo Foods for the finals. Tointer said she made pizza pockets. She said, “I wanted to make a healthy recipe so I chose pizza pockets. It is something I make at home. I used chicken, salsa, cheddar cheese and lettuce. Its good and when I make it at home my family likes to eat it.” Barter made apple rice crispy treats. She said, “I made it because it has apples and rice in it and apples are a fruit. My mom tasted it and she said it was good. I make it all the time at home but my brother doesn’t like it because he doesn’t like fruits or vegetables.” Green said she made a chicken and fruit salad. She said, “I made this because it is healthy. I’ve made it before at home for my family. It is something special I make for them. I like to cook.

This is one of my specialties. I would like to become a chef one day. I got in the contest because I like cooking. It only took 30 or

My family says it is delicious.” Prince said the students will prepare their recipes for the Sodexo judges at the Career Center.

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe Lord Don’t Move the Mountain—I believe that some mountains are supposed to be climbed. As Christians, we often want to apply our faith to rebuke the unwanted obstacles and challenges and thrust them into the sea of forgetfulness. However, there are times when being in the valley is God ordained. This revelation really came to mind while attending a birthday party for my former Intern’s grandmother. At the end of the celebration, a special request came for her to sing “Lord Don’t Move the Mountain.” After hearing this classic that once resonated in churches across America, I gave much thought to the lyrics penned by the legendary Inez Andrews. We are taught that part of the Christian maturation process is to “Say to the mountain be removed and cast into the sea…” (Mark 11:23). That is to say, when trouble arises in your life— use your mustard seed faith to

start dumping it into the sea. Initially, I couldn’t understand why my former intern’s grandmother, Ms. Rosa Jones, chose to sing this household favorite. Although, Christendom teaches these lyrics are biblically inaccurate—I received a major eye opener that they speak to truth. I was taught to rebuke any problems that come my way—however, some obstacles can prove more beneficial when left to run the full course. Some church folk might even look at you cross-eyed when you Go Through as if you did something to bring about this malady. In biblical days—when something was going wrong, everyone looked around for the culprit: cast him out so things would get back on track. Remember Job? His friends provided comfort and consolation during his season of trouble. Yet these same friends later asked him about the “sin” that caused this judgment from God (Job chapters 11-14). Job quickly assured them

Effie Rolfe he had lived a righteous life and Jehovah would vindicate him. Of course, as the story ends—Job was blessed with more than he ever had. Now, let’s get back to the subject of going through. The story of Job is a perfect example that sometimes in this life—you have to Go Through. We now know

that it’s the trials and tribulations that empowers us, to make us stronger. It is “fire that brings about pure gold.” (Job 23:10) Lyrics from the late Walter Hawkins’ song “Be Grateful” reminds us that “God has not promised us sunshine—that’s not the way it’s going to be—but a little rain, mixed with God’s sunshine—a little pain—makes us appreciate the good times and be grateful.” It is “the going through” the good and the bad that allows the making of a better you and me. Human nature doesn’t want to Go Through—but the lows are just as crucial as the highs. It is in these valley moments you gain strength to climb mountains and use your faith to cast all troubles into the sea. Endurance is another major component that allows you to become more connected to your source, your purpose and God’s perfect plan. Since hearing Mrs. Jones sing, I have a better understanding of Inez Andrews’ power-

ful lyrics. Unfortunately, you can’t outgrow the process. So don’t be discouraged when things you have prayed for don’t happen overnight. Perhaps the Lord is telling you there’s no easy way around this one. Just as Jesus prayed three times and asked that the cup of death be removed, he ultimately faced the painful death of the cross. “Not my will but thy will be done,” Luke 22:44. So it is with you and me. Sometimes you gotta’ Go Through—to become a better you. Prepare to develop your spiritual muscles for a faithbuilding hike up the mountain of hope. What mountain do you have to climb…? Effie Rolfe is an Author of “Supersize Your Thinking,” Media Personality and Motivational Speaker. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) having a caring, homegrown chief makes. I don’t know the chief but I do know of him and his reputation of taking pride in himself and the department is holding true right now. Hopefully nobody expects these additions to work magic and stop crime in the city. We do know now that the officers will be better equipped to respond to and interact with the public. When people get new clothes and dress up they feel better about themselves, the same has to be true about the police. Getting new cars and new equipment should make them feel better about the job they have to do. As long as that is happening, no doubt the public will respond better to the cops. As the cliché goes it is a win-win situation. Stacy Richards

Pence knew what he was doing Dear Editor: I am so glad to see the number of businesses and organizations stating they will stop operating in Indiana because of the fake “religious freedom” law that Governor Mike Pence just signed into law. Plain and simple it is a law that allows businesses to discriminate by refusing to serve or accommodate Black people and other minorities, as well as gay people, and basically anyone they don’t like how the person looks. All the business people have to do is say they are exercising their religious beliefs. This has to be about the biggest crock to ever, and I mean ever, come out of Indianapolis. It just gets worse because the governor pretty much said on na-

tional television that opposing equal rights for gay people and minorities is not a bad thing. Well, his position is getting the state in deep doo. Already next door in Chicago, the mayor is sending out messages and ads to Indiana businesses to come across the border because Illinois does not have this ridiculous religious freedom law. If it wasn’t so close to the tip-off I think the pleas to pull the NCAA Final Four from Indianapolis would get some traction. The governor thinks all of this is OK but his other Republicans are having second thoughts and swear they are going to “clarify” the language. Really, there is nothing to clarify. This is just a throwback to the 1950s when Black folks couldn’t sit at the lunch counters or use other public facilities. The Republicans can try to dress it up, sugar coat it all they want; but they ought to call it the Lester Maddox/Bull Connor/George Wallace freedom law. Dean Baxter
