Fate of Gary schools hang on referendum By David Denson The fate of the Gary Schools will be determined on November 8. As Gary voters go to the polls they will be asked to support a referendum which would help to keep the doors open. A series of measures have been tried to assist the school district, including bringing in a financial consultant to help streamline the district’s budget. Last year Senator Earline Rogers sponsored legislation especially aimed at helping to stem the fiscal bleeding. Last year she had language put in the Senate budget bill allowing the Gary School Corporation to decide whether to have specialists to come in to help with the finances. The board hired Jack Martin and Associates after interviewing three candidates suggested by the State Distress Unit and Appeals Board (DUAB). Martin has been working with the School Board to reduce the deficit and concluded that the only way to turn things around was through a referendum. “On September 23 Martin presented a
deficit elimination plan to the Distress Unit Appeals Board and he laid out a plan that showed where they could reduce the expenses and the only plan that could get the Gary School System on solid footing was to pass a referendum,” said Rogers. After Martin’s presentation Rogers said the chair of the DUAB stated that he hoped the citizens of Gary would get more involved in supporting the referendum and the state would consider that as an indication that the citizens wanted to maintain the Gary school system. This isn’t the first referendum the school system has tried to get passed. Last year the measure was on the ballot and failed by eleven percent. Rogers said that Martin suggested the referendum because he believed it to be that best remedy for the current situation.” He has to come up with a way to eliminate the deficit and put the Gary Community School Corporation on a sound fiscal path,” said Rogers. Rogers said that Martin had suggested Senator Earline Rogers

City backs study for Civil Rights Hall of Fame By Crusader Staff Writer The City of Gary Common Council recently approved a grant for a feasibility study and business plan for the National Civil Rights Museum and Hall of Fame. The resolution, sponsored by Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson was unanimously approved by the Council. The resolution authorizes the city to provide matching funds for the submission of a proposal to the U.S. Economic Development Administration to conduct a feasibility study and develop a business plan for the project. The National Civil Rights Museum and Hall of Fame project began under the administration of former Mayor Richard Gordon Hatcher and was part of a plan to bring tourism to Gary. Airport Authority Board approves B. Coleman Expansion Proposed plans could add up to five new hangars, increase airport’s general aviation capacity The Gary/Chicago International Airport (GYY) Authority Board on Monday approved the expansion plans of one of the airport’s two fixedbase operators, B. Coleman Aviation. The expansion could result in up to $20 million in investments over the next seven years and substantially increase B. Coleman’s footprint at the airport. “B. Coleman Aviation has been a trusted partner in the growth of the airport for more than two years and we’re thrilled to approve their expansion plans,” said airport chairman Stephen Mays. “There are a lot of exciting things happening at the airport, and this is the latest in public and private sector investments that will help the airport grow.” In November 2014, B. Coleman Aviation opened a $9 million, 52,000-square-foot hangar at the airport. The facility significantly increased the airport’s capacity for general aviation and cargo operations.
B. Coleman’s multi-phase expansion plans include a new, 30-year ground lease for property just north of the FBO’s current facility and the construction of up to five new hangars over the course of the next seven years. The first phase of the expansion is set to begin within the next 12
months with the construction of a new, 40,000-square-foot hangar and a minimum initial investment of $5 million. Future phases would allow B. Coleman to develop four additional hangars with additional investments of $15 million. B. Coleman will begin paying rent on the ground lease immediately.
“In the past two years, our business at Gary/Chicago International Airport has grown significantly and we no longer have enough space to meet demand,” said John Girzadas, president of B. Coleman Aviation. “We are excited about the future growth prospects for the airport. Our plans to grow reflect not only where we think the airport is today, but where it is going in the future.” During his presentation before the Authority Board, Girzadas noted construction of the new hangars will result in 50-70 construction jobs. Long-term, the expansion will create up to 30 full-time positions servicing aircraft and managing the expanded facilities. In recent years, Gary/Chicago International Airport has experienced significant growth. With the opening of B. Coleman Aviation, the airport added a second, industry-leading FBO. Gary Jet Center, the airport’s original FBO, has also increased its footprint with the construction of two new, LEED-certified hangars.
In June 2015, the airport completed a $174 million runway expansion. The extended, 8,900-foot runway allows the airport to serve heavier planes flying to farther destinations. Last month, the airport’s full capabilities were on display with the launch of the Indiana National Guard’s Slovak Shield 2016. Two C17 Globemaster III transport aircraft, loaded with four Black Hawk helicopters and Indiana National Guardsmen, and a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft fully-loaded with support equipment for the mission departed from the airport for a month-long joint exercise in Slovakia. The scale of the Indiana National Guard mission reflected the airport’s growing capabilities and showcased the vast opportunities for the private sector. At Monday’s GYY Authority Board meeting, the board also approved an agreement with Duff & Phelps for appraisal services of the airport’s fixed assets.

National Poll finds Blacks disapprove of Cops but they like Cops they know Despite a 4-1 approval among black adults, all American adults disapprove 54 – 38 percent of athletes refusing to stand during the National Anthem in protest of perceived police violence against the black community, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. White adults disapprove of the protests 63 – 30 percent, as black adults approve 74 – 17 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWINuh-pe-ack) University Poll finds. There is a similar racial split on police in general as whites approve 70 – 20 percent of the way “police in the U.S. are doing their job,” while black Americans disapprove 67 – 24 percent. But blacks approve 68 – 25 percent of the way “police in your community are doing their job.” Whites approve 88 – 8 percent of their local police. With 4-1 disapproval among blacks, all Americans disapprove by a narrow 50 – 46 percent of the “stop and frisk” police tactic. Whites approve by a slim 51 – 45 percent, while black adults disapprove 78 – 20 percent. There is very little racial divide as all Americans say 73 – 21 percent that police should not violate civil liberties to prevent crime. Black adults defend civil liberties 83 – 13 percent and whites defend civil liberties 71 – 23 percent. “There is a profound racial divide over athletes who refuse to stand for the National Anthem and deep differences over whether the police can be trusted,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. “But no matter what race is surveyed, Americans believe police should not violate civilians’ civil liber-
ties to prevent crime. “On the controversial tactic of stop and frisk, in which some believe civil rights are abused, voters are split. “The message from Americans: The cop you know is the cop you trust.” Among all American adults, 50 percent see police as friends, while 6 percent see police as enemies and 42 percent don’t think of police as friends or enemies. Among whites, 59 percent see police as friends, while 4 percent see them as enemies and 35 percent say “neither.” Among black adults, 27 percent see police as friends, with 12 percent saying “enemies” and 57 percent saying “neither.” The “police you know” factor is seen in other questions as well: _82 percent of black Americans say “police in the U.S. are generally… tougher on blacks than whites,” while 11 percent of blacks say police treat everyone the same. _56 percent of blacks say “police in your community are generally… tougher on blacks,” while 36 percent of blacks say they treat everyone the same. _72 percent of black adults say “police in the U.S. generally use excessive force against minority suspects,” while 20 percent say police in the U.S. generally use “the appropriate amount of force.” _45 percent of blacks say “police in your own community generally use excessive force against minority suspects,” while 47 percent say police use the “appropriate amount of force.” A total of 72 percent of all Americans say police brutality is a “very serious” or “somewhat serious” problem. A total of 95 percent of black adults say police brutality is a “very serious” or “somewhat serious” problem. A total of 66 percent of whites say it’s “very serious” or “somewhat serious.”

Only 10 percent of white adults say police brutality is something they personally worry about, compared to 57 percent of black Americans. ICYMI: WTHR-TV Highlights Police Effort to Suppress African American Voters in Indiana Patriot Majority USA: "Raid of Indiana Voter Registration Project offices "partisan" and "violated numerous legal standards" Last week Governor Pence's State Police raided the largest voter- registration program in the state of Indiana and, in the process, stopped an effort to increase voter participation in the African American community. WTHR-TV takes a closer look at the State police raids and the expansion of voter suppression efforts into even more counties across the state. The full article can be found online at https://www.wthr.com/article/voter-application-fraud-investigationexpands-to-more-indiana-counties. (Excerpts below) With one week out for the voter registration deadline, the Indiana Voter Registration Project says 45,000 African-American voters are in jeopardy of not being able
to vote because the forms they filled out have come into question because of this investigation. They might not find out until they show up to the polls to vote. Patriot Majority USA released a second statement specifically about Tuesday's raid, calling it "partisan," and saying it "violated numerous legal standards, and even insinuated it may have been coordinated with Republican Secretary of State Connie Lawson. "The raid by Indiana State Police
sought to intimidate the Indiana Voter Registration Project (IVRP) in numerous ways," the statement said. "For example, investigators seized personal cell phones not related to the investigation; prohibited videotaping of investigators' activities in the IVRP's offices; [and] prevented IVRP staff from contacting in-state legal counsel, and then demanded that a state trooper be present if staff members called an attorney, a clear violation of attorney-client privilege."

She indicated that if it passes it would be for seven years and would be 4.5 percent per one hundred dollars assessed valuation. Rogers said the cost to the homeowner would depend on the size of their home, but she believed that the average amount would be about $70 a year for seven years. If the referendum fails it could mean the closing down of the Gary schools. “There were a couple of considerations on the part of DUAB that we may have to dissolve the community school system or consolidate it.

Some kids would go to charter schools because of open enrollment. You don’t have to go to a Gary school any more, and the student could end up going to school in Merrillville or Hammond. Either of those options would be without the Gary schools,” said Rogers. “People in Gary needed to know the thinking of those in Indianapolis, and I think when we got that message and those that hear that message are saying we may not be in support of wanting to say yes to a referendum, but when they think about the consequences that might leave Gary without a public school system, okay then I’m for it,” said Rogers.

An additional $1 million has been raised into the Indiana Democratic Party for field and party building efforts. “These resources will help us continue to spread Evan’s message of bringing Hoosier common sense and practical problem solving back to Washington,” said Bayh Campaign Manager Paul Tencher. “As we work together to share Evan’s vision and mission with each of Indiana’s 92 counties, these resources will be critical to ensuring that every Hoosier is motivated to use their voice and vote on November 8.”

SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND FATE America’s origin is partially rooted in a desire of the settlers to break away from religious oppression meted out by the Church of England. The new Colonists founded their society upon a platform of religious freedom, which became part of the fabric of the new society. Today, most Americans are proud to tout our religious freedoms, which is why it is so ironic that contemporary Americans are behaving so badly in this regard. According to pundits, presidential hopeful Donald Trump is supported by a large bloc of right wing Christians. These same Christians stand behind a man who has said that he would ban Muslims from the United States. This is very paradoxical considering the freedom of religion underpinning American society. Actually, there really is no real separation of church and state in America. Our holidays alone belie this fact: we celebrate Easter Sunday, and the entire Christmas season. These are clearly religious, specifically Christian periods with holiday activities that permeate the entire society, and where there is actually a marriage between religion and capitalism. Now, since it is plausible to say that there is a Christian foundation to the United States, it calls us to examine whether or not we are really living by Christian principles. The main tenet of Christianity is Love: Love thy neighbor; do unto others as they would do unto you, etc. But if we look at what we have done since our nation’s inception, it becomes clear that we have NEVER really lived up to the Christian principles that the Trumpster camp is so proud to espouse. The founders came to this country, conquered the indigenous people through guile; enslaved Blacks and others, and proceeded to build a nation established on the principles of white supremacy. The atrocities that marked the history of America would cause the devil, himself, to blush. The religious right that is so vocal in wanting to make America great again, is actually founded upon ideas that are actually antithetical to those principles taught by Christ. In this regard, they are against the ideas of Christ: they are ANTI-CHRIST. They celebrate hate, not love, bigotry not inclusion, and think that it is alright to go into foreign countries and take their resources by force. The current situation in America that provides the fodder for the presidential campaign has its foundations in this unchristian behavior; while Trump criticizes Hillary Clinton because of her husband’s indiscretions, he openly stated that we should have just gone into the middle east and taken the oil and left. How, in good conscience, can a so-called Christian take this stance? We must remember, however, that there is a precedent; the Bush administrations, both of them, did just this. In fact, the United States and her Christian allies have gone around the world, raping and pillaging, under the shadow of the American flag. And everywhere non-Christian behavior was the hallmark of activity. The truth of the matter is that it is quite possible that the world would not be in the situation it finds itself in today if America, supposedly the leader of the free world, had behaved differently; had behaved with integrity in line with Christian principles. But the fact of the matter is that it didn’t happen. So we have a message to the current crop of presidential candidates, ALL OF THEM: we will not now or ever gain greatness if we continue to pursue anti-christic behavior on the planet. It just won’t happen. And the most pathetic thing about the current situation is that there are so many Americans blinded by bigotry that they are willing to throw their support behind an obvious Anti-Christic individual who has openly said that his supporters would back him even if he shot someone in Times Square. The people, though, can make a difference. As this campaign season comes to a close, those who want to hire a president who at least has some modicum of decency, though not perfect, had better eschew Donald Trump and his right ring “Christian” running mate, Pence. The World’s FATE depends upon making the right choice. A luta continua. 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ‘Velt report contained vital stat Dear Editor: Last week administrators at the Roosevelt College and Career academy presented a progress report to the state board of education. According to the charter company, Edison Learning, that is running ‘Velt, the school is steadily improving. However, there was one element of the report that in my opinion got short shrift. The administrators said suspensions at the school have dropped significantly. This year there have been 53 compared 84 a year ago. Not only is the number impressive, but there are big implications with that number. Across the country there are calls for fewer suspensions at charter schools. The primary reason is when students are suspended the likelihood of their graduation is reduced. If they are suspended and the police are called into the situation, that likelihood drops even more. The Edison people are doing something right and should be applauded. We can’t have more of our children being set up to enter the school to prison pipeline. We all know dropouts with few skills and even fewer employment opportunities have an increased risk
of winding up behind bars. So what is happening at Velt is paying double dividends. The reduced suspensions also tie in with improvement test scores. With the students remaining in a learning environment, their chances of academic improvement increase dramatically. Staying in school also makes students feel better about the learning process because they are in a welcoming and supportive place, versus somewhere they are concerned about the least little infraction will get them bounced and interrupt their learning. Better test scores also improve their chances of entering some sort of post-secondary education program. Based on the report to the state, it truly sounds like Edison Learning is doing a lot of things correctly at ‘Velt and the results are in the students, maybe other schools in our district need to look closely at the Edison model to see how they too can lift up our students, and improve their prospects for the future. I guess the October Surprise that was sprung on Donald Trump last weekend shows who is the cry baby and who is the adult. If you still can’t tell, maybe this picture will help you out. HA, ha, ha!! Well Ol’ Trump, Nosey heard, better batten down the hatches ‘cause more is to come. But putting all jokes aside this is the dirtiest presidential election Nosey has ever witnessed. I’m so glad Hillary Clinton held her composure when Trump tried to do “tit for tat and brought 3 women that he said had had an affair with Bill Clinton and one woman who said Hillary laughed when she defended a guy for raping her at 12 years old. By the way someone needs to tell Trump that Bill Clinton is not running for President.

and comfortable, artwork at the place you have to wait for the bus isn’t any help. Sure for the first couple of weeks the murals or whatever goes up on the shelters will get a lot of oohs and awws, but after that crickets. The same people will be at the same stops everyday. Not too long after the artwork goes up, those passengers will barely notice it. Any money spent on by the transportation corporation should be spent on improved ridership. This piecemeal approach of adding art really isn’t needed. We need real improvements, not baubles. Tony Rust

Combined with a corporate donation of $50,000, the campaign raised a total of $137,000. “The outpouring of generosity from NIPSCO’s employees is overwhelming,” said Mike Megyesi, senior market manager of community engagement for the American Cancer Society. “No matter which fundraising event someone from our office attended, we were extremely impressed with the passion displayed by their employees in the fight against cancer. Candidates continue to evade issues of race in America CIRCLE CITY CONNECTION By Vernon A. Williams If America is this easily distracted, then Congress needs to pass a law that everyone voting age and older must prescribe to medications for ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) or risk jail time. There’s less than a month to go before an election that will largely determine the fact of this nation for the rest of the lives of baby boomers and perhaps even younger voters. This is a turning point. The nation is aghast over the latest in a long line of evidence that the Republican standard bearer is a nasty man with no respect for anyone – which just happens to include women. Indignation and shock is rampant. Repugnant as that offense to humanity may be, there is a larger issue that’s dissipating from the national conversation; it is the nagging, repugnant dilemma created by matters of race in America. Racism trumps any
other discussion. Hillary will talk about it in general terms when pressed. When Donald was asked what he would say when it comes to problems of race in the U.S. his response was loud and clear: “I say NOTHING.” And it was barely a beep on post-debate analysis radar. Even Black Americans don’t seem overly disturbed about their lives not seeming to matter much in a contentious campaign season that has shed light on virtually every other phase of the nation’s political spectrum. The PEW Research Center lists the Top 10 issues in election 2016. They are: 1. Economy 2. Terrorism 3. Foreign policy 4. Health care 5. Gun policy 6. Immigration 7. Social security 8. Education 9. Supreme Court appointments 10. Treatment of racial, ethnic minorities The half-full glass theorist would rejoice in the fact that race DID

political positions, what is the common denominator? Neither is advancing an aggressive agenda for change in race relations. The closest Donald comes to addressing how he would help Blacks is saying that he is the law and order candidate and will restore police powers like “stop and frisk” – ruled unconstitutional in New York because it overwhelming targeted Black and Brown people with miniscule resulting arrests or prosecutions. Not only is Donald not addressing the issue in a way that connects with Blacks, his posture fuels the flames of bigotry. Hillary may not be doing nearly as much as she could to push racial concerns to the forefront of the America’s political conversation, but her competitor is pushing in the opposite direction.
Vernon A. Williams make the list. The half empty theorist would lament, just barely. Either way, it’s important to add that footnote that these are the most important issues in the mind of registered voters surveyed – not the candidates. In reality, Hillary accuses Donald of “normalizing’ what once was the fringe element of white supremacist philosophy in the U.S. Donald says Hillary is the bigot for patronizing African Americans and using terms like “super predators” to characterize criminals who happen to be Black. So despite their broadly different
A Quinnipiac poll found that a majority of likely voters -- 59% -think that the way Donald talks appeals to bigotry. Some 29% of Republicans think that way and 72% of non-whites have the same view. Donald’s attempts to broaden his reach beyond his core supporters have largely backfired and likely hardened views against him. FOX right-wing commentator Bill O'Reilly asked the GOP candidate if Black Lives Matter was "a fuselighter in the assassinations of Dallas police officers." Donald replied,
"Certainly, in certain instances they are. They certainly have ignited people and you see that ... It's a very, very serious situation and we just can't let it happen." Republican Vice Presidential running mate Mike Pence touts an even more dismissive view. He said, “I believe there's been far too much of this talk of institutional bias or racism within law enforcement. That police officers are human beings. In difficult and life threatening situations, mistakes are made and people have to be held to strict account. … we ought to set aside this talk about institutional racism and institutional bias.” So let me get this straight. We don’t need to eliminate institutional racism and bias in America. We should just stop talking about it. On racial matters, the GOP ticket is quintessential dumb and dumber. Walgreens-Sponsored First Ladies Health Initiative Offers No-Cost Health Screenings In Gary On October 15 Local pastors’ wives stage citywide health day to encourage health and harmony in communities of color across northwest Indiana On Saturday, October 15, the First Ladies Health Initiative – a consortium of more than 160 pastors’ wives (First Ladies) from across the U.S. – will host the 3rd Annual First Ladies Health Day in Gary. Dozens of houses of worship across Northwest Indiana will turn the Genesis Convention Center into a “Health & Harmony center,” offering attendees no-cost medical testing and health screenings to detect or prevent systemic illnesses such as diabetes, hepatitis, hypertension, HIV/AIDS, obesity and certain forms of cancer. This year’s goal is to surpass 30,000 screenings for men and women. “We are, again, happy to join Walgreens in hosting the First Ladies Health Day,” said Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson. “We thank Methodist Hospitals, the First Ladies of Gary, and all of our neighboring communities for their support of this event that offers an array of no-cost health screenings to the citizens of Gary and Northwest Indiana. The church has traditionally served as a hospital for spiritual growth and healing; so, it’s a natural fit for our faith-based communities to expand their offerings to include health and wellness services. We invite Gary residents to come out on October 15th and take advantage of these health tests.” In addition to the no-cost health offerings, the Gary event will feature inspirational speakers, including an “Ask the Doctor” segment, entertainment for children, and a music showcase of area gospel choirs. Free transportation will be provided for senior high-rise buildings, as well as area shelters for men and women. For details or to sign up for transportation, call 219881-1302. The event is sponsored by Walgreens which, in 2006, collaborated with local pastors’ wives to develop a community-based program which confronts troubling health disparities head-on. The result was the First Ladies Health Initiative which has expanded tremendously — starting with the wives of 12 pastors in Chicago to 172 First Ladies from Chicago, Gary, Los Angeles and Orange County. To date, First Ladies Health Day is the nation’s largest of its kind, with nearly 200,000 medical tests and health screenings performed, and many lives positively impacted. 8
John Gremer, director of Community Relations for Walgreens, summed up the corporation’s commitment to advancing health in minority communities. “According to the Center for Disease Control, minority communities are disproportionately impacted by illnesses such as hepatitis C, hospitalizations related to hypertension, and other critical medical concerns. We had to do something to move these communities closer to healthy. Our support of the First Ladies Health Initiative started when it launched; and, today, we continue to share a common mission of creating healthier communities.” The First Ladies Health Initiative is sponsored by Walgreens. Participating health providers for the Gary event include: Methodist Hospitals, Gilead, the American Heart Association, Boston Scientific, Breast Care Center, NeuroScience Institute, Heart and Vascular Institute, and Ivy Tech Community College. “Methodist Hospitals is always looking for opportunities to collaborate with other organizations to improve the health of the families of Northwest Indiana,” said Raymond Grady, president and CEO, Methodist Hospitals. “The First Ladies Day in Gary is an excellent vehicle for reaching out to our faith-based community and we are happy to help the wives of our community’s pastors bring greater awareness of the importance of wellness and preventive health to their congregations.” For more information and a complete listing of all participating churches and First Ladies, please visit www.FirstLadiesHealth. com; or call (312) 470-0270. About the First Ladies Health Initiative The First Ladies Health Initiative is held annually in metropolitan areas across the U.S., including Chicago, Gary, Ind., Los Angeles, and Orange County, Calif. Produced by Danielle Ashley Group and sponsored by Walgreens, it is designed to bring awareness to illnesses that disproportionately affect African Americans, Latinos and low-income communities; and increase first ladies’ participation in the Health Day. A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe
The way to change your life and impact the lives of others is to stop hiding behind fear. One word of encouragement could catapult someone into destiny. You don’t have to be perfect to live in an imperfect world. Not only are you imperfect, so is the world and everyone around you. God doesn’t require perfection—He only wants availability for you to be about kingdom work and begin to walk into a spirit of excellence. So step into your greatness and out of fear—just get it done. When you do what you have said—it really is the best. What can you do…?
Do is the Best. That was one of my mother’s favorite quotes when I would try to convince her that I was going to complete a task. It was like yesterday when I would say, “Moma I’m gon’ do it.’ She would retort, “Gon’ is a good dog, but do is the best.” She knew that too often we make plans or say we’re going to carry out a project and it ends up in words only. Someone said planning is always better than the plan. When you plan you are actually putting forth the work and details involved to bring about the manifestation. As we move into the last quarter of 2016, concentrate on your goals and strategies to map out what is necessary to get from step A to step B. No need to wait for the ‘ideal time.’ It does not exist! So often, waiting for the perfect situation only prolongs one from making the necessary steps to accomplish the very goals and desires we want to achieve. I believe the underlying reason that people wait before initiating a task is
the fear of the unknown. Most people would rather live in a known hell than an unknown heaven and it is because of fear. Not only is it common to have fear, but also it’s good to have fear in that it causes an adrenalin rush to get the job done. So feel the fear and experience it, more importantly, you just can’t allow that fear to hold you hostage of what needs to be accomplished. Resolve that the fear of not accomplishing your goals must be greater than the fear of doing them. Someone is waiting for what God has put in you to do. You hold the blessing, deliverance, courage and untold miracles for more than you could ever imagine. So do it, the worse thing that could happen is you fail to succeed. C.S. Lewis said, “Failures are finger posts on the road to achievement.” No one is or ever will be exempt from mess-ups—it’s an integral part of life. Often our talk is backed by little action, as if the words alone will take Effie Rolfe wings and self manifest. This only happens when your talk equals faith done to you (Matthew 9:29).” Any“…according to your faith let it be one who has ever done anything
probably didn’t accomplish perfection during the first trial run. In most cases, you have to fail your way to success. Winston Churchhill said, “Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.” Yes, timing is everything, but you can’t keep waiting and waiting until the so-called perfect time when EVERYTHING will be just right. Gandhi said “become the change that you desire to see.” Maya Angelou said, “Nothing changes unless you do…” Let’s end this year in the spirit of greatness, favor and blessings. However, the only way to get what is rightfully yours is to get up and get out. I remember several fond memories of growing up in Arkansas, one in particular was when I failed to do a chore in a timely manner. When my mother said, “Gon’ is a good dog, but do is the best” she reminded us not to simply talk about it but to be about it. Just do it. Since life is so short, why continue to wait unnecessarily—weight broke the bridge down.

Eddie Murphy is good in ‘Mr. Church’ with no jokes and even a tear or two By Jody York Eddie Murphy, who reportedly hasn’t been in movies lately because he hadn’t been offered any roles, is great in “Mr. Church.” Murphy plays a cook for a woman named Marie, played by Natascha McElhone, who has been told she has six months to live but survives her cancer for about six years after her prognosis. When Mr. Church comes into the household, the lady’s young daughter, Charlie, played in her early years by Natalie Coughlin and then later by Britt Robertson, is upset, probably because she doesn’t know that her mother has cancer and because Mr. Church is Black and is infringing on their family unit. But before it’s all said and done, Mr. Church becomes a part of the family—and unfortunately, again toward the end, he turns out to be the only family that Charlie has. It’s slow moving at first, but Mr. Church does just what he is supposed to do—cook meals for the mother and daughter. At night he leaves and returns in the morning to prepare breakfast. The mother is bedridden, and her late boyfriend, to whom she played his mistress, paid for Mr. Church to take care of her for only the six months. But the six months rolls on and on, and Charlie learns to accept Mr. Church—even bragging about him to her classmates. Charlie and her best friend Poppy attend an elite school, at the behest of school administrators who awarded them both scholarships. Time goes on, and the mother eventually passes away, but throughout their relationship, she calls Murphy Mr. Church and he refers to her as ma’am. Charlie eventually goes away to college, but still doesn’t know much about Mr. Church’s private life. The two of them have a brief “heart-to-heart one night when she pries, with Mr. Church adamantly telling her that this is the only thing that he has private—and what he does when he leaves her house is none of her business. This mystery about Mr. Church makes this role for Murphy even more appealing. He is fantastic as the sophisticated, dignified man who enjoys cooking and brings life into the home, even as he thoroughly enjoys his friends and life after 12

hours. I find it interesting that Charlie just couldn’t be content NOT knowing what Mr. Church did after he left her home. It’s like an old saying to which I can’t accurately attribute the author—“You want my dreams, too?” (I think it’s the late Richard Pryor). The film begins in the early 70s and spans about 15 years, until Charlie has to return back to Los Angeles, with only Mr. Church as a friend. She unexpectedly arrives at his door one day, pregnant and not finished with school. But, in the same vein that Mr. Church kept his privacy, at first he doesn’t ask her a word about the father or the circumstances that have led Charlie to end up not as the writer that she set out to be. He lets her stay with him, with the promise that she won’t pry and that this is his home and his private life. “Mr. Church” is a good movie, filled with food, jazz music, art and such good acting, even when Murphy isn’t saying anything at all. It is not all “kumbaya,” but it shows love all the way around for everyone in the household, even more so than Charlie could have imagined when she was young and so outspoken against Mr. Church being in the home. “Mr. Church” was first screened at the recent Tribeca Film Festival and is based on a real friendship that the screenwriter Susan McMartin enjoyed with her family cook who became her best friend and father figure. At first I didn’t think I would like it, as I imagined “The Help” and “Driving Miss Daisy” (which has the same director Bruce Beresford, with the Black person taking care of the white family. He does take care of the family, and some critics have panned it because of this relationship. However, I enjoyed seeing Murphy in a non-comedic role, and it would be nice if he only returns to his music career and his backyard for a little bit and is offered more dramatic roles. “Mr. Church” is playing at theaters everywhere in the Chicago area. Elaine Hegwood Bowen is the author of “Old School Adventures from Englewood —South Side of Chicago.” For information about her book, visit http://tinyurl.com/om4hvgo or email editor91210@yahoo.com.
EDDIE MURPHY GIVES a good turn as Mr. Church, in a return to the big screen after nearly five years. His character was that of a renaissance man-he could paint, play the piano and, of course, cook.

Jackson’s 75th birthday bash prompts election countdown By Chinta Strausberg There was standing-room-only at Dr. King’s Workshop Saturday, October 8 where the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. celebrated his 75th birthday party for nearly sixhours with tributes from many including Rev. Al Sharpton. Rev. Sharpton used the occasion to launch a 30-day election countdown with the Black vote being the deciding factor of who wins the Oval Office. The four-tiered party, which included an 8 a.m. breakfast, a 10 a.m. live broadcast, a 12 noon press conference followed by a luncheon, was organized by the powerful Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court Dorothy Brown. She called Jackson “an international icon, a Civil Rights legend, a man who has stood for over 50years fighting for social justice… fighting for you” and a man who is “trying to make this world a better place for you and for me.” In the spirit of the movement,

There is a 30day countdown. He registered more Democrats than anyone…,” said Sharpton. He has launched a 30-day countdown beginning on Rev. Jackson’s Oct. 8th birthday. Referring to African Americans, Sharpton said, “We will be the deciding factor in the battleground states.” The election, he said, “will be determined by the turnout of the Black vote.
