Mrvan proposes $2.5M in relief for East Chicago residents By David Denson State Senator Frank Mrvan has introduced a bill in the Indiana Senate that would provide $2.5 million in disaster relief funds for residents in the Calumet Housing complex in East Chicago. Hundreds of residents have been in limbo since high deposits of lead was found in the soil underneath the East Chicago complex in May 2016. While some have moved out, a large number of the 1,000 residents still live in the complex after learning they have nowhere to go. Many residents are families with children. Several elected officials are supporting the request for disaster relief including U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky. Following President Donald Trump’s shake up of the EPA, Visclosky and Senator Joe Donnelly sent Trump a letter seeking information regarding how the changes at the agency would affect the East Chicago clean-up project. Visclosky said he had concerns about how the EPA was dealing with the issue prior to Trump taking office. He said he had asked EPA to look into the causes of the lead in the water and to find resources to take corrective action along with testing the neighbors of people whose water tested
positive of contaminants. EPA officials assured residents that the clean–up efforts will continue despite the presidential transition. Since taking office there has been a number of changes at the agency including the suspension of new projects. However, residents were told during a meeting held last Saturday that there won’t be any changes in the Superfund program and that the Calumet neighborhood cleanup fund will not be affected. Mrvan’s bill is in the Senate Appropriation Committee. If passed, it would take money from the Department of Homeland Security and disburse it to eligible agencies dealing with lead arsenic contamination in East Chicago. The legislation would make $2.5 million available to East Chicago for two years. During December of 2016, the Environmental Protection Agency stopped Superfund remediation when it found that 18 of the 43 homes that were tested exceeded 15 parts per billion of lead, which is the agency’s threshold for water safety. Water tested during the remediation was done to see if the evacuation had any effect on the lead service lines in the neighborhood. EPA sampled the soil from 494 of the 596 homes for lead and officials said they
plan to do more testing in 2017. Efforts to address the problems in the Calumet Housing Development continue despite a failed request to get help from the state. Prior to leaving office, former Governor Mike Pence turned down a request from
East Chicago Mayor Anthony Copeland for disaster assistance. In refusing Copeland’s request, Pence said that the state and federal agencies were doing enough to address the problem and he saw no need for disaster assistance. “Given (Continued on page 3)

Blowing the whistle on the Emmett Till murder case Accuser unlikely to face charges for perjury after confession By Erick Johnson He’s been dead for more than 60 years. Buried with Emmett Till was the truth to what led to a brutal murder in 1955. A new book about the murder is out and the woman whose accusations led to the brutal killing of the 14-year-old confessed that her story was a lie. Like Till’s killers, Carolyn Bryant Donham will not be brought to justice or face any charges for perjury. Till’s mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, never found justice for her son before she died in 2003. Now, the last surviving figure in one of the most shocking murder cases from the Jim Crow era will mostly likely go unpunished. Legal analysts say the case involving Donham is too old to prosecute, and Till’s killers have been dead for a long time.
Till was a fun-loving teenager who lived in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood for years before he made a fateful trip to Mississippi at a time when many Blacks were being lynched
and terrorized in the Deep South. Now, Till’s murder case is back in the national spotlight with a new book where Donham recants her story, after more than 60 years of silence since Till was brutally killed by two white men in Money, MS. In the book, The Blood of Emmett Till, Donham said she lied during the criminal trial before her husband, Roy Bryant, and J.W. Milam were acquitted after proceedings that lasted just over an hour. For decades, Donham remained silent as millions of Americans were led to believe that Till whistled at her before the two men kidnapped him in the pre-dawn hours of August 26, 1955. The two murdered Till during a brutal beating that severely disfigured Till’s face and body. They shot him in the head before throwing his body in the Tallahatchie River. Days later, Till’s body was found with a large cotton gin fan tied around him with barb wire. (Continued on page 2)

Blowing the whistle on the Emmett Till murder case (Continued from page 1) Mississippi officials urged Till’s mother to keep his body shut tight in the box, but Till-Mobley defied the orders. Pictures of Till’s face in Ebony, Jet and other newspapers horrified the nation and the world. At an open-casket funeral at the Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ in Bronzeville, Till’s mother wanted to show what the men had done to her son. Black historians say Till’s murder led Rosa Parks to refuse to give up her bus seat in a historic act that sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Civil Rights Movement. The Emmett Till murder case continues to burn with interest today and is the subject of many books and documentaries. However, this latest book on Till’s murder is drawing significant interest because it involves an elusive white woman who has broken her silence after avoiding the press and Till’s relatives for more than
Emmett Till 60 years. In 2004, the late “60 Minutes” correspondent Ed Bradley located Donham at her home in Greenville, MS. His cameraman captured her on video, but the journalists were chased away from the property after Donham’s son arrived. Already, The Blood of Emmett Till is drawing rave reviews from readers who received an early copy of the book. Written by Duke University scholar, Timothy B. Tyson, the book also chronicles the life of Donham, who is twice divorced and married three times. The book also answers a question about the Till murder case that many Blacks knew for years: that Till did not flirt with Donham. On “CBS This Morning,” Tyson said he was connected to Donham after her daughter-in-law called him and told him that she liked his previous book, Blood Done Sign My Name. At the time, Donham was writing her memoir, which she said won’t be made public until 2036. 2
The Blood of Emmett Till, which had a limited pre-release to selected news outlets, includes graphic details of the murder and the events surrounding the aftermath of Till’s murder. The book also includes the intense racial and social climate of Blacks living in Money, MS. However, the part of the book that’s stirring the most interest is Donham and the place where Till’s fate began: the Bryant grocery store, an infamous, crumbling landmark that was once located on a flourishing street in Money. The store was owned by Donham’s first husband. During the trial, Donham claimed Till whistled at her when she came out of the store where Till and boys played on the steps. On the witness stand, Donham claimed Emmett grabbed and asked her, “How about a date, baby?” She also said Till had made verbal and physical advances towards her. But in the book, which hit stores
“I was lying in the bed and wasn’t feeling well when she called,” said Gordon-Taylor, who marked the 60th anniversary death of Till last year with a ceremony at Burr Oak Cemetery where he is buried. “I said what? I was surprised when I saw this all of a sudden.” Like many Blacks, Gordon-Taylor said she had always known that Donham’s accusations were false, but she grew particularly upset when Donham compared the grief of losing one of her sons to that of TillMobley’s grief over her murdered child. “There’s no comparison. Her husband brutally killed my cousin,” Gordon-Taylor said. Another cousin of Till, Wheeler Parker, 77, was with the teenager when he was kidnapped from a bedroom of his uncle’s home in Money. Parker said Donham’s confession brings some closure to Till’s death. “I was pleased with her confession, but a lot of family members

Jan. 31, Donham said that part wasn’t true, according to excerpts published in the magazine, Vanity Fair. Donham also said in the book that she “felt tender sorrow” and admitted “nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him.” Some relatives who spoke to the Chicago Crusader aren’t happy with Donham. Some are angry that Donham not only lied, but waited 60 years to tell the truth. Others are angry that Tyson, the author, waited 10 years to come forward with Donham’s confession. Some say they won’t buy the book. In an interview with the Crusader, one of Till’s cousins, Airicka Gordon-Taylor, who lives in Chicago, said she learned about Donham on Jan. 27 after a friend from Los Angeles called her about the Vanity Fair article on the magazine’s website.

are upset,” he said. “But a lot of people are going to see Emmett the way I wanted them to see him for 60 years. This brings a lot of closure for me.” Parker plans to release a book that will detail his own personal account of Till’s story. Titled A Few Days and Full of Trouble, Parker hopes to release the book in March. As for Donham, she has nothing to worry about despite her confession. In 2007, a grand jury decided not to indict Donham in the murder after an 8,000-page inquiry by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The U.S. Justice Department began an investigation into the Emmett Till lynching in 2004, Emmett’s body was exhumed for an autopsy, and the F.B.I. rediscovered the long-missing trial transcript. Solutions offered for Gary schools funding crisis OP-ED By Senator Eddie Melton The Gary Community School Corporation (GCSC) is currently experiencing an unprecedented financial crisis unlike any school corporation has ever experienced in the State of Indiana. The GCSC projects an operating deficit of $8.5 million in Fiscal Year (FY) 2017
Senator Eddie Melton and $6.7 million in FY 2018. As of July 1, 2017, the corporation will have an outstanding debt balance (principal and interest) of $101 million. Currently, the district is struggling on a day-today basis to ensure that the payroll is met and critical vendors, such as health insurance and bus services, are paid. Few cities in Indiana have experienced a rapid and dramatic population loss like Gary. Between 1970 and 2014, Gary lost 97,506 residents, a 56-percent decline in population. State policies have had their fair share of ef-
fects on the school corporation as well. From 2009-2016, the school corporation experienced a loss of $84 million due to property tax caps. The impact of the property tax caps on GCSC is estimated to be $13.4 million in 2017 and $14.2 million in 2018. It is estimated that 30-40 percent of property tax revenues are simply never collected. The proliferation of charter schools in the city makes Gary sixth in the nation with the most charters. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, approximately 40 percent of Gary students attend charter schools. According to the Indiana Department of Education, during the 2015-2016 school year, families of 688 Gary students exercised school choice vouchers to attend private schools. Additionally, neighboring school corporations actively recruit Gary students with billboards and other advertisements due to their open enrollment policies. These practices continue to drain the district of its student population. On September 23, 2016, the state-appointed Financial Specialist informed the Distressed Unit Appeals Board (DUAB) that the district needed to place a referendum on the ballot to ask the public for an additional $8 million to help them remain an operating school corporation for the 20162017 school year. The referendum came within one percent of passing, leaving GCSC with little direction for the future. I have been working with a host of local and state leaders, including the state Financial Specialist, to make a formal request of DUAB to fund the remainder of
the current school year. These potential dollars would ensure teachers and critical vendors are paid so the schools can function properly for our children. Although this is a temporary solution to a complex issue, I am working with Senator Luke Kenley (R-Noblesville), Chairman of the Appropriations committee, to offer long-term legislative solutions. Currently, we both have two separate bills that mirror each other in many ways. However, there are some aspects from my bill that I hope will be considered as amendments to Sen. Kenley’s Senate Bill (SB) 567. I would like to thank Sen. Kenley for allowing me to co-author his bill. This pro-

to face financial challenges, many students continue to excel academically because of the hard work of our dedicated teachers. With the help of the community, we have a unique opportunity to redefine and invest in the educational experience for GCSC students. To achieve immediate and long-term success, we must keep our children first in our decisionmaking process. We must strive to create a district that is financially solvent and fiscally responsible. We must continue to improve the overall quality of education for all students. Furthermore, we must work to restore community pride in the district.

State Rep. Smith joins fight to save Gary Schools One of the top priorities of the 2017 legislative session for State Rep. Vernon G. Smith (D-Gary) will be to provide badly-needed assistance to a Gary Community School Corp. that has been financially strapped by recent moves made by state government. Recent changes made to the school funding formula have caused the district to make a number of moves designed to save money, including moving to monthly leases on buildings and delaying salary payments to employees. “The crisis facing Gary Schools is typical of those faced by urban districts across this state that have become hamstrung by school funding formulas that are giving increasing levels of state support to richer suburban schools, as well as the ongoing experiments conducted by recent administrations to expand and
vides an opportunity to remain engaged with both proposed bills as they move through the legislative process. Sen. Kenley’s bill designates the corporation as a distressed political subdivision and requires an emergency manager have all authority over financial matters of the school corporation. My bill, SB 564, differs by providing the community more input in the process by developing a local fiscal management board that has the same authority. I believe this would allow the current school board and superintendent to focus on improving the overall quality of education in Gary. Although the district continues
form the duties required of it when the state refuses to provide the assistance that is necessary,” Smith added. Smith’s relief efforts can be found in two bills: • House Bill 1628 asks that Gary Schools receive compensation from the state budget’s General Fund to pay off existing debts and other school-related expenses. •House Bill 1632 asks for $50.2 million from the General Fund to pay off existing bond obligations. “I believe the state of Indiana owes Gary Schools this assistance, because the state has helped create the pressing obligations that the corporation now faces,” Smith said. “Our schools face an awesome responsibility in providing our children a quality education, and they do not deserve to be the victims of poor financial decision-making.”

GIVE ME YOUR TIRED, YOUR POOR, EXCEPT MUSLIMS! President Donald J. Trump hasn’t been in office two weeks and already he has created worldwide chaos! One of his first moves was to issue an executive order putting a temporary ban on immigrants, including refugees, coming from seven (7) mostly Muslim countries; Iran, Sudan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Libya and Somalia. Allegedly this move is to protect American citizens from potential terrorists. This does not ring true however, because we have not experienced terrorism perpetuated by individuals from any of these locales. We know however, that Saudi Arabia has possibly had some involvement in unsavory activities, but they were not included in the ban. This is because, as one Trump administration member stated, they are our friends. The executive order that was issued for the ban has people all over the world upset, and has created havoc in many, many lives. In one situation, a woman who lives in the United States worked for a family here. She went abroad for a vacation to visit family, but upon returning home, she was not allowed into the country. This will jeopardize her job. There were many other people caught up in this malicious move. People are calling the ban “unAmerican” and there have been demonstrations at key airports. In New York, taxi drivers have boycotted because of the ban. The White House issued a statement saying that “Getting Ahead of the terrorist threats is key.” One hundred and nine (109) people have been temporarily detained, but the White House doesn’t see this as a big problem. They allege that immediate implementation is needed to keep “a lot of bad dudes from rushing into our country.” This is an appalling turn of events. One woman who participated in the March on Washington the day after the Trump inauguration spoke with an elderly Jewish woman, a holocaust survivor, who was at the March. She told her fellow marchers that “this is the way it started” (i.e., the atrocities of Nazi Germany)! That is a chilling thought, because there are a number of other Trump initiatives that smack of the Nazi regime. With this move, the Trump administration has managed to demonize a whole religion. This is especially ironic considering the fact that the American colonists were fleeing religious tyranny in England ultimately resulting in the birth of this nation. Another troubling situation that has arisen in the first week of President Trump’s occupancy of the White House is the removal of a number of state department employees and the appointment of Steve Bannon to the National Security Council. This is a strange move, and portends an administration that instead of playing by the rules, is bending them to suit its needs. Bannon is a scary individual, a proponent of the so-called Alt-Right who has been known to be racist. The other Trump appointees have all been people who want to deconstruct America and remake it in their image. If they get their way, the America that exists now will change to such an extent that we might not recognize it. This is not to say that we have had a perfect past, far from it. But the values espoused by this country are such that citizens expect certain things to happen, and because of our democratic principles, we have had access to the courts in order to remedy issues. Whether true or not, Americans, recent immigrants included, have come to expect fair treatment. This is why the current ban has ruffled so many feathers. It is being seen as a mean-spirited move; one that divides people rather than bringing them together. It could also have the unexpected consequence of endangering American lives by enraging and emboldening those who are actually terrorists. Yes, a dark pall has fallen on America. To his credit, former president Barack Obama weighed in on the situation lauding citizens for supporting democracy by standing up and resisting those things that threaten democratic values. People who have not seen a need to vote or otherwise participate in civic processes need to take heed: if something exists (democracy) and you don’t nurture it, it just might go away! We could lose whatever gains that we’ve made. Hopefully, enough people will see the light and help prevent these negative changes from taking effect; if we don’t resist, we can’t win! A luta continua. 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR If you see something, say something Dear Editor: “If you see something, say something.” A situation in my district demands that I say something. It is regretful that such an occasion has arisen but the time has come to speak out on the situation involving Councilman Jamal Washington and his recent efforts to fight charges of domestic violence. Councilman Washington’s actions are distasteful to not only women, but to anyone else who respects women. While Councilman Washington has made a failed attempt at apologizing, his apology fails to demonstrate the required degree of contrition. It is also discouraging to see the attitude toward women that has been demonstrated by President Donald Trump now be trickling down to the nation’s local officials. Councilman Washington is my representative on the county council and I am asking him to step down from his current position immediately. I can assure Councilman Washington that if he does not step down
and ever plans to run for office again, he will not get my vote—nor the votes of my family, nor the votes of any women or self-respecting citizen of the county. Sincerely, Charlie Brown State Representative House District 3
Stripping Washington’s title is not enough Dear Editor: I find it absolutely appalling that the Lake County Council is only looking at taking away the title of council vice president from Jamal Washington. The fact that Washington admitted to beating his wife is evidence that not only should his title be stripped, he should be forced to resign from the board. He admitted to the beating and was found guilty in a court of law. I fully understand that when we vote people into public office, we are not voting for them based primarily on moral character. However, once elected, if they show us they are morally deficient, it is time to get rid of them. There really is no excuse to allow Washington to continue on the county board. It is not

One of the glaring examples of how callous and uncaring his administration was is shown in how he turned his back on the citi-
tempt to address the situation. Now mind you that the situation in Calumet Park came about way before Pence was selected as Trump’s running mate. Despite numerous attempts to get the governor’s office involved in the issue nothing happened. Meanwhile, when Pence became Trump’s running mate he was seen in photo ops with Trump down in Baton Rouge and Flint supposedly showing concern for the plight of those communities. Seems like he could have used his new found celebrity status to focus on the problem locally. But the bright lights of fame got to him and his real self showed through. It showed that the light of fame caused him to turn a deaf ear to the blight of the residents in Calumet Park. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) affect our quality of life. Personally, someone with as bad judgment as his doesn’t deserve a seat on the Lake County or any council. I wholly agree with State Rep. Charlie Brown who wants Washington to resign. Brown noted that Washington has shown total disrespect for women. That fact can’t be disputed. I can recall that during my childhood my parents told my brothers that they are not to hit girls. It was a simple rule, and one they have lived by this day, at least 50 years later. Washington comes off as very smug and almost laughing at the suggestion he be removed from office. His Facebook page bears the title “still standing.” Washington is an intelligent man, but maybe there is something about him that doesn’t allow him to see the serious nature of his actions. gion. We are doing that job for them when we allow a man who uses a woman for a punching bag to continue to hold office. If Washington cared for his constituents, rather than just a paycheck, he would remove himself from office. In no way am I suggesting every elected official has a squeaky clean background. However, those who don’t, have not become a distraction and a disgrace to the governmental process. Washington has given no compelling reason(s) why he should be allowed to continue on the council. I would like to repeat that Washington brings no special skills set or knowledge that the council can’t find elsewhere. The Lake County Council is embarrassing itself, and undermining its own effectiveness by keeping Washington as one of its own. It is definitely time for him to go. The Most Important Love Letter You’ll Ever Write Henry Ford once said, “Before everything else, getting ready is the secret of success.” This phrase can be applied to many aspects of life, but why are we so hesitant to apply it to death? Yes. I said it, “DEATH!” Just like taxes, the passage of time and the changing of the seasons, death is inevitable. I have found in my 20-plus years as a financial advisor that the more clients are open to talking about planning for their demise, the easier the process becomes. Your family member(s) who bear the responsibility of managing your affairs after you are gone will be more than happy to receive a love letter from you. Not the mushy kind that many will text, email or mail this Valentine’s Day, but correspondence that will prepare them to handle your business without unnecessary roadblocks.

Face it – the American society playing field is not and never has been level CIRCLE CITY CONNECTION By Vernon A. Williams First, let me make it clear that this is not about Indiana’s new governor, Eric Holcomb, though to make my point, details of his gubernatorial ascent are relevant.. This is about the core reason most white Americans really get misty eyed when they recite the pledge, sing the national anthem and pay homage to the flag – and why many African Americans don’t always share the same level of devout patriotism. Don’t get me wrong. In the words of Langston Hughes, “We too sing America.” This is the greatest nation on earth and progress in Black America is distinguishable. But we’d be fooling ourselves to say the average Black person has just as much reason as whites to proclaim, hand-overheart, that there is “…liberty and justice for all.” Back to the Indiana governor. A
year ago, Eric Holcomb was a struggling GOP candidate for the senate. He lagged substantially behind opponents in fundraising and faced the political juggernaut of being a virtual unknown in Indiana though working at top levels of the Republican Party in the Hoosier State the previous 10 years. His inauguration last month climaxed a meteoric rise to power that movie-makers would reject as being far too implausible. Put simply, Holcomb is governor because Mike Pence was selected running mate on the GOP presidential ticket last July. Holcomb, 48, was his handpicked successor; virtually assuring victory in the candy apple red Hoosier State. Now, Holcomb sits in the governor's office without an established political record or any experience in elected office. The. November election win over Democrat John Gregg was his first as a candidate for any office. It was a perfect storm. Holcomb was the choice of Pence last March to become lieutenant governor, replacing Sue Ellspermann who resigned to
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 5)
Van Til seems wiser after prison Dear Editor: I guess that a number of people in Gary and around the county didn’t have former Lake County Surveyor George Van Til on the top of their brain. Recently though, I read a question-and-answer interview with Van Til. Before Van Til was sent away to prison for misusing his office for re-election efforts, he was a pretty popular public servant. In that Q-and-A, Van Til said that prison did something to him that he needed—made him humble. Prison also has a tendency to break people, so it is good to see that was not the outcome of his 18-month stint in the Terre Haute facility. From reading the article, I couldn't help but come away that Van Til also got something of a reprieve too. He mentioned that there have been instances since his release in June, people have thanked him for his work as Surveyor. Maybe there are those who do give him the side eye, but he didn’t mention it. I am among those who believe he should be told he did a good job while in office. Judging someone based on one instance, versus a career, in my opinion is counter-productive. Besides, it wouldn’t do any good to rub Van Til’s misdeeds in his face now. Personally, the important thing is that at age 69 he is rebuilding his life and I think we should all www.garycrusader.com
wish him well with that. To some it might seem like a stretch to link Van Til with Lake County Sheriff John Buncich, but I don’t think so. Buncich is about to go to trial and that has to be beyond sobering for him. The sheriff, like Van Til, is a popular guy among all races. The other similarity between them is most people felt they were doing good jobs, and we were unaware of their dirty dealings. Both men also made the grave mistake of involving others in their underhandedness. There is an adage that goes “a secret is best kept between two people, as long as one of them is dead.” The partners in crime of both men are very much alive. Hopefully, Buncich has prepared himself for what appears to be the inevitable - prison time. It is extremely rare that the federal government takes on a case and loses. There is no reason to believe the sheriff’s will be any different. I have no idea how close, if at all, the two men are, but it seems it would be in Buncich’s best interest to find some time to sit down and meet with Van Til. He could get an understanding from another public figure Baby Boomer on what life behind bars is like. No doubt Van Til can share survival skills and tips with Buncich about the do’s and dont’s of prison life. The most important thing though is Van Til can advise Buncich on what Van Til did to come out whole, bowed but not broken.
Vernon A. Williams become president of Ivy Tech Community College. Holcomb was prepared to be Pence's re-election campaign running mate until Trump revealed his surprise V.P. selection. Even more ironic is the fact that Pence was considered by many pundits to be on the verge of disaster in his reelection bid because of a nation controversy relative to the LGBTQ community. We will never know whether Pence could have survived another run because Trump pulled him out of the fire. Behind in every poll, most people viewed the Republican ticket efforts as an exercise in futility. Similar to Holcomb’s inexperience—the soonto-be President of the United States had no history of elective, appointed
or voluntary public service. Contrast that with the bar set for the first African American president; a standout Harvard Law School graduate, dedicated community servant in Chicago and a U.S. Senator. Barrack Hussein Obama had to compile stellar credentials to achieve the highest office in the land while his successor gets OJT (on-the-job training). The playing field for Black Americans has never been level. It would be ludicrous not to acknowledge that there has been monumental progress. NAACP workers down south tell one another, “You may not get all you pay for – but you will definitely have to pay for all that you get.” All three of these people – Trump, Pence and Holcomb – were on the edge of political doom this time last year. Now they are among the most powerful leaders in government. There you have it. Three monumental illustrations of miraculous uplift within a few months. I challenge you to find a single equivalent for a Black American in the history of the country. The so-called angry Black man or woman isn’t stressed out by choice. The plethora of obstacles, double standards and bigotry nurture that frustration. Adding injury to insult, some whites argue that they are the victims and that the scales tilt to favor people of color. That is, at best, an alternative truth (aka bald-faced lie). Comedian Chris Rock put it best telling a predominantly white audience that none
of them would trade places with his Black skin in this society – not even if the switch included his fat bank account. Look at what happens when Blacks do rise to power. Mr. Obama speaks to Congress and is heckled by a southern lawmaker calling him a liar. The Texas governor points her finger in his face. A TV host leads the charge of the so-called “birther” movement, forcing him to prove citizenship. Congress obstructs every item President Obama presents. The only Black in the U.S. Senate last year, Tim Scott (R-South Carolina), lamented that in one year as a national elected official, he was pulled over by D.C. police seven times. After five years in Congress, a guard at the gate forced him to show identification to enter the Capital building. “I have felt the pressure applied by the scales of justice when they are slanted. Recognize that just because you don’t feel the pain or anguish of another does not mean it doesn’t exist.” Enough said. CIRCLE CITY CONNECTION by Vernon A. IU Northwest medical students memorialize and give thanks to cadaver donors By Michelle Bass Students at Indiana University Northwest Medical School expressed thanks and appreciation to donors by offering a memorial service held this past Friday, January 27. “We didn’t have anything like this and I found some of the things being done was disrespectful,” stated Dr. Talarico. Prior to his program, many medical students did not know the names and background of the donors. “Students didn’t know the donor’s names, so they gave the donors names. I would not say ugly, but not too respectful comments would be made,” observed Dr. Talarico. When he came to Indiana University Northwest Medical School, he thought it was an opportunity to make a change. Under the direction of Program Director and Associate Professor, Dr. Ernest F. Talarico Jr., the memorial service has become a tradition to Indiana University Northwest’s Medical School for over a decade and a half. “I think when you know the name of an individual you are working on, right

When asked about medical schools applying his concept of training, Dr. Talarico stated, “If I had my way, every medical school would be doing it. Dr. Talarico feels that it is a good learning experience for the students. It makes them better physicians and most importantly, good for the patients and their families. “…we owe it to them,” stated Dr. Talarico.

‘I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO’ IS RIGHT ON TIME By Bonnie DeShong In the seventies, anything by James Baldwin was a must read among Black students. We held major discussions based around his books Another Country, The Fire Next Time, and Go Tell it on the Mountain, just to name a few. We all thought we knew all there was to know about Baldwin and his thoughts and feelings. After watching the documentary “I Am Not Your Negro” by Raoul Peck and voiced by Samuel L. Jackson, I realized most of us didn’t know the true depth of Baldwin at all. The film is based on a book Baldwin was beginning to write in 1979 called “Remember This House.” This film is about the history of racism in America and its effect on not only the past, but the future of relationships. Baldwin speaks on his relationship with leaders Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Medgar Evers. It was so interesting to see that he was so close to all three of these iconic men whose views were at times so different, yet Baldwin understood the purpose and struggle of all of them. Through his speeches, lectures,

and observations we hear and see the dedication he had to the movement. Raoul Peck does a fabulous job in merging the past and present together in such a seamless way that I at times had to look twice to see what era we were in. It is so relevant today and reminds us that the more things appear to change the more things stay the same. For me the film was a reminder and to many it will be an eye opener of what our country was, is and will be. SPEND THE MONEY and see I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO in the theaters. Take your teenage and college age children and then have a real discussion afterwards. Until next time keep your EYE to the sky!

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe It’s a heart thing. “Man looks on the outward appearance but God looks at the heart” is found in 1 Samuel 16:7 and it is a favorite scripture that has often been quoted. Another passage that helps to examine the heart is the prodigal’s son in Luke 15:1132. As the parable goes, the younger son wanted to skip the process. He wanted to fast-forward the normal procedure and demanded that his father bequeath his inheritance immediately. Although, this was not the norm then or now, the father willingly acquiesced to his son’s wishes allowing the youngster to have his fair share. Just as God has a perfect plan for each of us, nevertheless, he will not force his love on anyone. You must willingly receive. As the story continues, after living a loose life and squandering his money, the
naïve and spoiled brat lost his money quicker than a lottery winner. Eventually, he came to his senses, return home, beg his father for forgiveness and hopefully live as one of his hired servants. When he got to his father’s house, before he could speak, his father saw him afar out and ran to receive him. What unconditional love. Even when we intentionally mess up and act crazy, God’s love never fails. Luke 15:2-24 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. 23 And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. 24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to celebrate.’ Regardless of the insult of asking for his inheritance, the tremendous shame he caused his family by his worldly lifestyle—the father looked beyond his son’s selfish, dis-

Effie Rolfe graceful and immature behavior to extend genuine love and rejoicing. Faults are like headlights—you always see someone else’s first. It’s so
easy for us to point the finger. Unfortunately, most of us forget that whether seen or unseen—you— me—we and I have issues. No one is perfect. “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one (Romans 3:10). Even the eldest son had a fit and was disgusted by both his father and younger brother’s (the prodigal son’s) actions. Tradition was for the eldest to receive the inheritance first. Also, he couldn’t understand why his father was so quick to go beyond the call of duty to embrace his younger brother after he had willfully brought shame to the family. The father spoke to the older brother and said, “…Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found (Luke 15:11-32).” The real joy in discussing this passage of scripture is God genuinely loves and delights in us in spite of our selfishness, mistakes and outright rebellion. In fact, He adores and honors the household of faith by giving us abundant life and the desires of our heart. Because God is a gentleman, you must receive His love willingly. He doesn’t even require you to earn
forgiveness because it’s free. It’s a blessing to know that our Heavenly Father loves you and me without compromise. Now this is what we call free love. Although, there are consequences to disobedience—in the end, God’s love remains. Thus, I have no need to be envious, jealous, judgmental or unmerciful about your missteps and actions nor you of mine. God longs for us to be in His presence. Once we realize it, there is nothing God won’t do to make it your reality. God’s grace and love paid for our disgrace. We can trust him to have mercy on our misery. He only asks that you too allow love to flow unconditionally within your heart. Gary Police Chaplain provides service to officers in need By Carmen M. Woodson-Wray The Gary Police chaplains have a very important task of coming to the aid of not only members of the police force, but also families that are going through a crisis. The circumstances are many and they include crime, fires and any other type of emergency situation. Rev. Thomas Williams, pastor of Prince of Peace Church is the Chief of the Gary Chaplains. He has been a chaplain for 12 years and held the position of chief for 3 years. Chaplin Williams said the job of the chaplain is to council the officers and provide council information to families that may need it in the aftermath of a traumatic event. He said, "we are called to homicide scenes, we oversee cemetery services, follow up with home visits with 6 to 7 chaplains, along with the chief of police and commanders. There are also times when we have to offer the use of our churches at no cost, as well as make financial donations." The chaplains also provide grant money for those that do not have insurance. He said, "We present applications from the State of Indiana up to $10,000. During the summer the chaplains hold a Stop The Violence March, and conduct street ministries, which is where we go out into the different communities and minister."
THE GARY POLICE Chaplains provide a very important service to officers and families during tragic circumstances. The Gary Police Chief is photographed with several of the police chaplains, whose membership ensure there is always a chaplain on duty at the police headquarters. From l-r: (standing) Gary Police Chief Larry McKinley and Marvin Lyles; (seated) Rev. Dr. Chester Jones, Rev. Charles L. Emery and the president of the Gary Chaplains, Thomas Williams. (Photos by Ted Brown) The chaplains also have a hotline to report any crimes or disturbances. They pass out 120 turkeys during the holiday season with the help of officers, as well as gift cards. Rev. Williams said he and Bishop E. Bobby Warren started the idea of the Police Chaplain and took the
idea to then Gary Mayor Scott King, who agreed with it. He said, "It was our vision and it was fulfilled back in 2005." Rev. Williams says they started out with 9 chaplains and 4 were police officers. Now there are female chaplains and all of us are pastors.

The Art House brings artistic revolution to the city By Dezimon Alicea In 2002, the first pitch was thrown inside of the Gary Railcats Stadium. And since its inception, it has garnered the attention of fans from all over this region, including Chicago, and parts of Michigan. Fast forward to 2016, right across the street from the stadium, 411 E. 5th. Avenue has been the home to many restaurants, but the Art House plans on being there for some time. I entered The Art House for the first time a few months ago for their grand opening. It was filled to capacity with people from all walks of life, and they jammed in the alley ways with cars leading up the front doors, to see what The Art House was all about. Just like many people, I was curious as to just what The Art House was all about and I was able to have those questions answered. The Art House, is focused on dispelling “Negative connotations associated with Gary,” according to Michele Larimer, project manager. Many residents stand with the Art House, in hopes to change the public perception of Gary, but not everyone is enthused. Some stakeholders for the Art House and even Michele her-

self are not Gary residents, for some people this can be an issue. Some residents feel as though it can be counterproductive for outsiders to come and have a hand in what may work for the city. This is something Michele is aware of, and intends to halt those suspicions. In lieu of the pessimism she’s received, Michele remains optimistic and continues to push forward. “Hiring from within the community,” has been a key component to the vision of the Art House and a way to answer the cries of critics. “Creating jobs for many of the unemployed in the city,” is a high point Michele wanted to mention. As pro-
ject manager, Michele was able to pull on different entities from within the city while establishing The Art House’s presence. While driving down 5th Avenue, right before you turn into the Art House parking lot, you will see a huge art piece hanging on the side of the building. That was done by Live Arts Studios in Gary. Benches and other art pieces in the building were also created by Gary residents. Gary is a city known for its artistic roots, and the Art House hopes to maximize on those roots, by providing a platform for showcasing the city’s potential,” according to Michele. the passion protruding from her every statement. Michele not only has passion, but she has an extensive background in hospitality, urban design/ urban planning and community development; she believes this background will help to move things forward with the Art House. Michele was anxious to talk about the different programming the Art House offers, and those programs range in variety. Starting with their homegrown meal program; which delivers homegrown meals to Gary residents. Something, Michele and the entire Art House team look forward to regularly. They have a culi-
nary exploration program; where experts in different fields come out to share their expertise with students. Lastly, their culinary incubation workshops; where those who are interested in starting food based businesses can learn from pros in that field. “Someone who is in the beginning stages of business, can learn from someone that’s been in the business for let’s say three years,” said Michele. Business plans, marketing, and budgets are all strategies that a student can learn while attending these programs. An added benefit, all of the programming is free to the public. But in some cases, you might run into a waiting list. Michele is hopeful about what the Art House can bring to this community. She solicits residents to come out and learn about their programing as well as taking part of their different events. More information can be found on their website, www.arthousegary.com; or on their facebook page at ArtHouse Gary. The Art House is located at 411 E. 5th Avenue in Gary and regular business hours are from 9-5, Monday through Friday.

A book to help Black women love their hair HAIRLOOMS: The Untangled Truth About Loving Your Natural Hair and Beauty Just in time for Black History Month, Hairlooms asks: Why is it so difficult for Black women to embrace their hair? And, how can Black women overcome the multi-layered challenge of embracing their natural hair and beauty? Author Michele Tapp Roseman helps readers answer these questions for themselves, to write a new story that they can pass along. Michele Tapp Roseman wrote “Hairlooms: The Untangled Truth About Loving
Michele Tapp Roseman
Your Natural Hair and Beauty” after years of trying to figure out how to love her natural hair. When she finally learned how to transition to natural hair, she still had to battle her emotions. Learning how to reduce natural hair breakage and high hair shrinkage did nothing for her feelings. She couldn't really explain why she hated her natural hair. Talks with other Black women who wore natural hair let Roseman know many felt the same. “Hairlooms” is the story of
Michele Tapp Roseman's emotional hair transition plus "hair” stories from 32 amazing women and men she interviewed over the course of 6 years. These include: Major General Marcia Anderson—Senior advisor to the Chief on policies and programs for the U.S. Army Reserve, and the first AfricanAmerican woman to earn the distinction of a two-star general in the U.S. Army Reserve. The late Dr. Maya Angelou—World-renowned poet and author. The recipient of
6 lifestyle changes to improve women’s heart health By health enews Staff, a news service from Advocate Health Care Six healthy lifestyle practices can help prevent heart attacks in the majority of young women, according to one study. The study, which was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, followed nearly 70,000 women for two decades and tracked their diets and other health habits. The findings – unhealthy habits can lead to heart disease. The average age of the women in the study was 37 years old. The average age of heart disease diagnosis was 50, and the average age for diagnosis with a risk factor for heart disease was 46 years old. “There are several past studies like this involving the population in general, but most have an underrepresentation of women,” says Dr. Abbas Rampurwala, cardiologist at Advocate Heart Institute at Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Ill. “This study is very important because women usually work and have other responsibilities and tend to put their own
heart health on the back burner.” After monitoring the women, researchers found that they all portrayed the same lifestyle habits. The six healthy lifestyles included: 1. Not smoking 2. Maintaining normal body mass index 3. Engaging in physical activity for at least two and a half hours per week 4. Watching seven or fewer hours of television a week 5. Consuming no more than one alcoholic beverage per day (on average) 6. Following a healthy diet Overall, women who follow all six practices have a 92 percent lower risk of heart attacks and a 66 percent lower risk of developing heart disease. For those diagnosed with risk factors, following at least four of the practices leads to a

significantly lower risk of developing heart disease later in life. Also, adhering to some of the practices independently, such as not smoking, also shows a lower risk for heart disease. Dr. Maciej Malinski, a cardiologist with Advocate Heart Institute and at Sherman Hospital says, “As women get older, their risks start to equalize with the male population.” Dr. Malinksi also explains that risk factors can include a family history of heart disease, physical inactivity, poor eating habits, smoking and excess alcohol consumption. “Prevention is key,” says Dr. Malinski. “Whether a man or a woman, these healthy lifestyle practices can only decrease your chances for heart disease later in life.” For more health and wellness news, visit www.ahcheal-thenews.com.
30 honorary degrees, and former Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University. Lisa Price—Founder of Carol's Daughter hair and beauty brand, a favorite of celebrities, and now sold in stores from coast-to-coast. Now owned by L'Oréal, Price is still at the helm of this growing business. Jane Carter—A professional hair stylist/colorist and salon owner, she founded the Jane Carter Solution after an allergic reaction caused by prolonged exposure to chemicals in traditional hair care products. Today, Jane Carter Solution sells millions of dollars worth of products in Whole Foods Market, Sally Beauty Supply, Walmart, Target, CVS and Walgreens stores. A'Lelia Bundles—Great, great granddaughter of the first Black female millionaire and hair-care creator, Madam C. J. Walker. She has teamed with Sephora and Sundial Brands to launch the Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture product line. A'Lelia is also a seasoned journalist, public speaker, and author of the New York Times bestseller, On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker. Words have power, and those that Black women often use to describe their hair are derogatory: nappy, steel wool, out of control. They often personally inherit these terms and pass them along without even realizing the crushing effects these words have on their feelings about the person they see in the mirror. Hairlooms is not another book that addresses the practical ways of styling Afro-textured hair naturally. Hairlooms asks: Why is it so difficult for Black women to embrace their hair? And how can Black women overcome the multi-layered challenge of embracing their natural hair and beauty? Author Michele Tapp Roseman helps readers answer these questions for themselves, to write a new story that they can pass along. Guided exercises throughout help readers "comb through" their self-perceptions and form a plan for self-acceptance and personal empowerment. See more about Hairlooms at: www.hairloomsthebook.com.
