Gary Air Show to return with two big acts By J. Coyden Palmer During a press conference at City Hall March 17, Gary Mayor Karen FreemanWilson announced that after a two-year hiatus, the Gary Air Show is returning and will feature the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team and the United States Air Force Thunderbirds. Freeman-Wilson also said the city plans to market the show more to Chicago’s South Side residents and those who live in the south suburbs in an effort to get more foot traffic to the summer show scheduled July 11 and 12 at Marquette Park. The announcement of the show returning to Gary was met with positive reactions from residents and the business community, especially from those in the Miller Beach area. “We are ecstatic with this news,” said Cullen Ben-Daniel, a 38-year resident of Gary and president of the Miller Historical Society. Ben-Daniel was one of the biggest critics when the show was taken from Gary and moved to neighboring Newton County. He said it was done although Lake County taxpayers were financing the show. He became the director of a boycott to bring the show back to Gary. When last year’s show was canceled due to a deluge of rain that flooded the area, Ben-Daniel believes it was fate

Gary school officials weigh options in wake of school closing Several days after the State Board of Education voted to close Dunbar-Pulaski Middle School, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz and Gary School Superintendent Cheryl Pruitt toured the school. On Thursday, March 12 the state board voted 6-4 to close Dunbar-Pulaski, the city’s only middle school. The move caught many including Ritz and Pruitt, both in attendance by surprise. Ritz called the decision unprecedented and noted the state had never closed a public school. “I am incredibly disappointed in the board’s vote to close Dunbar-Pulaski. The Department of Education has been working hand in hand with Gary Community Schools and the board’s unilateral action throws out all the hard work that has been put into strengthening this school. The children of Gary deserve better,” said Ritz. Following Monday’s tour of the school, Ritz met with several school officials to discuss the schools future and the options that may be available. For the past six years the school has been graded F by

The JOBS Fund grants $120,000 to City of Gary

SEVERAL OF THE JOBS program participants pose with the mayor at the conclusion of the press conference. AT A RECENT PRESS conference, Mayor Freeman-Wilson accepts grant check from Angela Woolfolk of JOBS Fund. Program expected to reduce rates of recidivism for 25 Gary Residents Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson and representatives from the City of Gary, Economic Development Corporation (GEDC) recently announced receipt of a $120,000 grant from The JOBS Fund for the pilot year of the Gary 4 Jobs program. This program will engage 25 Gary residents who are underemployed or face employment challenges due to having an ex-offender status. “We understand that those who have some type of criminal record face a different set of challenges when it comes to securing employment,” said Freeman-Wilson. “The Gary 4 Jobs Program, which is a subset of our Gary 4 Life initiative, aims to create opportunities for Gary residents while assisting them with becoming job ready through extensive training.” The training program has two areas of focus – how to start a business and securing employment in a lawn care or landscaping enterprise. Gary 4 Jobs participants will receive training in mowing, edging, hedge

maintenance, weeding and other lawn care skills. In addition, participants will engage in coursework, which will cover steps on starting a business, life-skills, employment skills, mock job interviews and attendance to at least one job fair. The program’s focus on lawn care and landscaping serve as a direct response to the City of Gary’s escalated efforts toward blight elimination. Gary 4 Jobs participants will groom overgrown public areas and will receive compensation for the coursework and labor completed on city properties. Bo Kemp oversees the Gary EDC. “The Jobs Fund grant is the first of many opportunities that the EDC will continue to pursue to put Gary residents to work,” said Kemp. Angela Woolfolk, Treasurer of the The JOBS Fund, recognized Gary as an ideal candidate to receive the grant funds. “The JOBS Fund is thrilled to grant our first round of funding to the City of Gary for this wonderful program,” said Angela Woolfolk. “We are confident that it will be a success and look forward to watching the participants thrive.”

The JOBS Fund is the 501(c)(3) entity of Chicago-based Community Development EnterpriseSCORE. To date, SCORE has issued $40 million in New Markets Tax Credits to qualifying projects located in Cook and Will County, Illinois and Lake County, Indiana. On Tuesday, March 24, SCORE will host a New Markets Tax Credit outreach event at the Genesis Convention Center in Gary from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. to share more information with economic development agencies, community leaders and local businesses about eligibility for New Markets Tax Credits. This event is open to the public but requires registration. Contact Karlen Beitman, Community Outreach Director of SCORE at kbeitman@mccafferyinterests.com to confirm attendance. Community forum planned on RDA funding and schools The Northwest Indiana Federation of Interfaith Organizations Jobs Coalition, the Twin City Ministerial Alliance, East Chicago Hope & Opportunity (ECHO) and League of United Latin American Citizens Council 5024 (LULAC) announced recently that they will co-sponsor a community meeting that will focus on General Assembly legislation impacting the citizens of Northwest Indiana. State Senators Earline Rogers, Lonnie Randolph, Frank Mrvan 2

and State Representatives Charlie Brown, Vernon Smith and Earl Harris have been invited to attend and answer questions about pending legislation. The meeting will take place on Saturday, March 21 from 2:004:00 p.m. in the Robert Oliver Fellowship Hall of Greater First Baptist Church, 4862 Olcott, East Chicago, Indiana, Bishop Tavis Grant, Host Pastor. According to Rev. Dwight Gardner, Federation President, major concerns exist in Gary, East Chicago and Hammond about legislation pending before the General Assembly. “We are particularly concerned about re-funding of the Regional Development Authority (RDA) because even though our cities fund it to the tune of $3.5 million a year, people from these cities are not being hired or trained to work on RDA projects; new board member re-

strictions are also alarming. Pending RDA legislation also requires an additional 20 percent from each city’s County Economic Development Tax to support the RDA. We want legislators to tell the people why they support or do not support this funding; if not, what they intend to do about it once they return to Indianapolis.” Rev. Cheryl Rivera, who works closely with community based organizing around equity in public schools, said that people are equal-

ly concerned about legislation in both the house and the senate that would decrease the size of school boards and while inserting two mayoral appointees. “We don’t believe that the public has had the opportunity to weigh in on whether we want our school boards so drastically changed. We want to know what is behind the rush to disenfranchise us.” For more information contact Rev. Rivera at 801-4872. www.garycrusader.com

Gary Air Show to return with two big acts

THE U.S. AIR FORCE Thunderbirds and U.S. Army Golden Knights will headline this year’s Gary Air Show on July 11 and 12. (Continued from page 1 ) will need to change its marketing strategy says Ben-Daniel and others. Crusader asked Freeman-Wilson why the city has not marketed to the residents and businesses on the South Side of Chicago and its suburbs, where many people do not realize Gary has an air show. Freeman-Wilson acknowledged that was a problem in the past, and she will use media outlets based out of South Chicago to promote this year’s show. “One of our opportunities for this show in 2015 is to expand our marketing; to market to the citizens of the South Side of Chicago and all over the Chicagoland area. We believe our show is much more accessible and much more affordable. We believe we will have appeal not just here in Gary and Northwest Indiana, but in the Chicago market as well,” Freeman-Wilson said. Previous air shows were losing

money, which was one of the reasons given for removing the show from Gary. The mayor said while it is a legitimate concern, she believes changing the financial strategy is one way the city can lessen the risk of a financial burden while also building the popularity of the show over the time. “The key way that we will ensure that we are not losing money is we will look at quantifying the revenue,” Freeman-Wilson said. “The money that we will make on this is not just for the city…it’s to the vendors and businesses as well. We also have to capture the parking revenue and foot traffic. We believe that by focusing on sponsorships and having multiple partners who have relationships that we can capitalize on, we will see a significant difference in the bottom line. Because at the end of the day, when we talk about economic development the object is to make money.” Ben-Daniel said residents and businesses in the Miller Beach

area also want the show to succeed financially and said they are willing to assist the city in any way they can. He said the community has felt cut out of the process in the past. But, he thinks Freeman-Wilson’s administration understands the need for Gary to use its most valuable resource: the citizens themselves. “Personally, I’d be willing to give the mayor some of my ideas that could help to make the event a success, and I hope she reaches out to the community in Miller to try and deal with the logistics to make this a successful event,” Ben-Daniel said. “For many of the businesses in Miller neighborhood, the air show is their summer life blood to everyone from mom and pop stores, gas stations, even to those who own summer rentals along the lake. They rely on this revenue that is generated by the thousands of visitors who come in.” City leaders said bringing back the air show is just another step in

The mayor said with redevelopment plans at the airport moving forward, in addition to plans to rehabilitate neighborhoods in blight announced last week, residents have a lot of reasons to be opti-

mistic. “The event was created by Gary to showcase the Miller Beach lakefront. This is where it belongs. And the best part is the beach never floods,” Ben-Daniel said with a laugh.

The Gary School Board and Ritz are exploring their options in light of the decision to close the school that includes appealing the state board’s action, or finding other alternatives for the school and its students if it remains closed. Last year Ritz designated the Gary schools high risk, due to the underperforming schools and poor finances. Concerned that the high risk www.garycrusader.com

designation would be seen as an attempt by the state to takeover the Gary schools, Ritz sent in a team from the state department of education to assist in turning the system around. Although Pruitt originally sought to close Dunbar-Pulaski, the decision was later reversed and Lew Wallace High School was closed instead because it was economically more feasible to maintain Dunbar-Pulaski. If Dunbar-Pulaski remains closed, students could be transferred to Roosevelt College and Career Academy.

EDITORIAL

EDITORIAL WOMEN’S HERSTORY March is Women’s History Month, and during this time the accomplishments of women are celebrated. Women represent onehalf of the human beings on our planet, and for many years their contributions have been ignored. Even today, there are places in the world where women are treated as less than second-class citizens. In some places women cannot even inherit property and in America, women only got the right to vote after a vigorous suffrage movement. Women leaders have managed to emerge in the modern world, however. For example, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Johnson is the first female elected president in Africa and serves as president of Liberia; Margaret Thatcher was elected as the first female British Prime Minister, and Indira Gandhi served as the fourth Prime Minister of India. In America, however, we have yet to have a woman lead this nation, though there is a chance that that may change during the upcoming presidential election. African American women have been prominent in the quest for Black liberation. Among this group were Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, and Ida B. Wells. Additionally, the following are just a few other African American women who have succeeded against all odds in America, and who deserve honor and recognition for their contributions in the historical and contemporary arenas: Alice Walker, Oprah Winfrey, Maya Angelou, Marian Anderson, Madam C.J. Walker, Willie B. Barrow, Josephine Baker, Mary McLeod Bethune, Gwendolyn Brooks, Shirley Chisholm, Angela Davis, Bessie Coleman, Ruby Dee, Marian Wright Edelman, Coretta Scott King, Myrlie Evers, Angela Davis, Althea Gibson, Venus and Serena Williams, Gwendolyn Brooks, Fannie Lou Hamer, Dorothy Height, Billy Holiday, bell hooks, Lena Horne, Zora Neale Hurston, and Mae Jemison. Also, we have Barbara Jordan, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Edmonia Lewis, Toni Morrison, Leontyne Price, Audre Lorde, Wangari Maathai, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Mary Church Terrell, Nina Simone, Augusta Savage, Maggie Lena Walker, Cicely Tyson, Phyllis Wheatley, Daisy Bates, Rosa Parks, Dorothy Dandridge, Diana Ross, Rhianna, Beyonce, Pat Parker, Edmonia Lewis, Janet Jackson, Annie Lee, Pearl Bailey, Rita Mae Brown, Alice DunbarNelson, Melissa Harris-Perry, Regina Anderson, Marjorie Lee Browne, Jessie Redmond-Fauset, and Charlotte Forten Grimke. We can also point to Halle Berry, Viola Davis, Angela Bassett, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Anna Arnold Hedgeman, Ariel Williams Holloway, Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Queen Nzingha, Dorothy Dandridge, Hallie Quinn Brown, Henriette Delille, Odetta, Eartha Kitt, Michelle Obama, Octavia Butler, Aretha Franklin, Jackie Ormes, Leslie Uggams, Queen Latifah (Dana Owens), Jada Pinkett-Smith, Diane Carroll, Condoleeza Rice, Pam Grier, Grace Jones, Ella Baker, Diane Nash, Septima Poinsette Clark, Lupita Nyong’o, Vanessa Williams, Cathy Hughes, Euzhan Palcy, Jackie “Moms” Mabley, Tina Turner, Pattie LaBelle, Janelle Monae, Beverly Johnson, Jill Scott, Butterfly McQueen, Ava Duvernay, Betty Carter, Mahalia Jackson, India.Arie, Jessye Norman, Tina Turner, Ella Fitzgerald, Lauryn Hill, Whitney Houston, and Alicia Keys. A prominent, contemporary African American philosopher who has the ear of many so-called “progressive” Blacks has said that no woman has ever done anything of significance. This incredible statement coming from an otherwise intelligent person is truly ridiculous when considering the list of accomplished women just mentioned, and underscores the need for a period where the accomplishments of women are highlighted! Moreover, there are countless others too numerous to name, and we salute them all, both sung and unsung. 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Stop the lazy reporting Dear Editor: It seems it is impossible to pick up one of the daily NWI newspapers and find any news about Gary that is not crime related. In my opinion it is just a matter of the reporters being lazy. Calling the police station and getting a list of crimes is hardly what reporting is all about but that is what seems to be going on at those newspapers. There are so many stories occurring in Gary that have absolutely nothing to do with crime, but that is all those papers want to give us day after day, and week after week. I have called and suggested stories but they never make it to print. Gary has been battling a negative image for a very long time. It looks like the city is slowly turning the corner away from that. It would be a good thing if the papers covered those programs, projects and awards that are helping improve the city’s image. I am not asking them to be rah rah about Gary. I am asking that they take the time to report all aspects of life in Gary, not just the negative parts. I bet one of the reasons we get such shoddy coverage is none of the reporters or editors developing stories about Gary live here. Even if they don’t, I wish they would ask some who does, what is happening

here. Personally, no matter where you look there is a decent news story about Gary. Whether it is the schools, city hall or our many churches, there is a lot that is positive that happens. Maybe we can make a concerted effort to reach out to them and help them find these stories, given they won’t check in with us. Ronald Smith

“The world according to the G.O.P. Dear Editor: During the week of March 7, 2015, both the Chicago Crusader and the Gary Crusader published an editorial cartoon with a flag and a dollar sign and the comment “THE WORLD ACCORDING TO THE G.O.P.” The comment could have easily read “THE WORLD ACCORDING TO THE DEMOCRATS.” Let me tell you why. I work every day with senior citizens to help them solve medical bill problems caused by mistakes in the Medicare system. I have saved seniors over one million dollars. I wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www.solvingmedicareproblems.com). In 2009, President Barack Oba-

This is the “Self-Administered Drug” problem for seniors. The change in the legal definitions cost seniors and hospitals (Continued on page 11)

SOON AS THE WEATHER BREAKS After surviving the coldest Feb-

ruary in history we were able to catch a sort of mild weather break earlier this week, and although the temperature took a dip later in the week, it really didn’t seem to matter because warmer weather is just around the corner. With the advent of spring, folks look forward to doing more stuff outside and enjoying bright sunny days. What they don’t look forward to, however, is the onslaught of political candidates who’ve been chomping at the bits for the weather to change so they can get out there and campaign. With the balmy temperature comes the campaign workers and often the candidates hitting the neighborhood in search of votes. Every vacant lot will be littered with campaign signs by the middle of next

month. Spring also brings out the motorcycles with their loud roars zooming up and down the streets all over the city. Although the campaigns and the motorcycles can be major irritants, it is one that is gladly exchanged for the weather we experienced awhile back. Now bring on the summer so we can complain about how hot it is. -Nosey-

WITH A FRIEND LIKE THIS Word is the feedback on the decision by the state’s Board of Education to close Dunbar-Pulaski, Gary’s only middle school, has been extremely negative. Especially since the motion to close the school was made by Tony Walker the board’s Northwest Indiana member. It’s rumored that Walker was a supporter of former state superintendent Tony Bennett, who was responsible for the state takeover of Roosevelt. Now with Bennett gone, it appears that Walker is intent on completing his agenda of dismantling the Gary school system. However, Walker’s latest action should come as no surprise, as chairman of the Gary Library Board he closed the main library branch. No doubt those who voted or didn’t vote for Walker in his two failed political campaigns are glad he didn’t win, cuzz with friends like him who needs enemies.

Payment assistance still available for NIPSCO customers With winter coming to a close, NIPSCO wants to remind customers that bill payment assistance programs are still available although the state’s winter moratorium ended March 15. Under the state’s moratorium Indiana utilities—including NIPSCO—do not disconnect service to Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) customers who are behind on their bills during the winter season—December 1 through March 15. “Working with our customers to get them the assistance they need is our main focus,” said Debora Owen, NIPSCO’s vice president of customer operations. “We offer a number of programs to help those customers who may be experiencing financial challenges or falling behind on their energy bills. If customers find themselves in those difficult situations, we urge them to reach out.” Some assistance programs offered include: •Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Program: LIHEAP support is avail-

able to households falling within 150 percent of federal poverty guidelines. It is fully funded by a federal block grant offered through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). •NIPSCO Customer Assistance for Residential Energy (CARE) Discount Program: The NIPSCO CARE Discount Program is designed to provide further bill reductions to LIHEAP-eligible customers. Applications are made at the same time as LIHEAP submissions, and reductions range from 11 to 26 percent, depending on the same criteria used by the state in determining the level of assistance. •NIPSCO Hardship Program: For customers just outside the federal poverty guidelines for LIHEAP, the NIPSCO Hardship Program offers up to $400 in gas bill assistance to households between 151 and 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Hardship funds are available through many of the same local Community Action Agencies where LIHEAP funds are distributed. Applications are accepted through May 31, 2015.

•Township Trustees: A limited amount of energy assistance funds are available through local township trustee offices via tax revenues. NIPSCO customers are encouraged to contact their local township trustee to see what help is available. •Payment Arrangements: A NIPSCO payment arrangement allows eligible customers to make an initial payment within four days of the agreement, then spread the remaining unpaid balance over three months, plus current bills as they are due. For more information on billing options and payment assistance, customers are asked to call NIPSCO at 1-800-4NIPSCO or visit NIPSCO.com/PaymentAssistance. Globally, the most seasoned UPS Circle of Honor driver is Thomas Camp of Livonia, Mich., with 52 years of driving without an accident. Ronald McKnight of Bronx, N.Y., is next in line with 46 years of safe driving. Sixty-two others have logged at least 40 years without an accident. Eight in 10 African-Americans believe that success is determined by an individual’s actions, and are more likely than the American population at large to believe themselves capable of making their dreams a reality, according to proprietary research from Northwestern Mutual. The Elements of Success Study, published by Northwestern Mutual in 2014, examined more than 25 variables to determine respondents’ overall feeling of happiness in the areas of personal finance, health, wellness, career, family relationships and friendship. The study revealed a number of insights about how African-Americans view success and how it is attained versus the broader population. For instance, African-Americans are significantly more likely than the general population (71 percent vs. 61 percent) to believe they have the power to make their dreams a reality, and 56 percent of African American respondents believe that they have not yet achieved those dreams. Additionally, by a margin of 10 points, (68 percent vs. 58 percent) African-Americans agree or strongly agree with the statement, “people who work hard will be the most successful,” and only 16 percent of respondents agreed, “things that hap-

pen in my life are because of luck or chance.” Commitment to hard work and self-reliance likely contribute to the 74 percent of African-Americans who say they consider themselves at least as successful as their parents were, with 44 percent considering themselves more successful than their parents. And while 64 percent of AfricanAmericans surveyed agreed they would be happier if they had more money, 33 percent of respondents said that while they may not be happy now they are planning their lives so they can be happy in the future. “This study shows that financial security is important to a vast majority of Americans, including many traditionally underserved groups,” said Kevin Chadwick, managing director of Northwestern Mutual’s Austin, TX office. “We work to show all of our clients that careful financial planning can lead to the wealth and security they find so important.” The Elements of Success Study findings augment Northwestern Mutual’s efforts to recognize the importance of Black History Month and the contributions made by people of color to America’s culture, society, and economy. The company is currently piloting programs designed specifically to help African-Americans achieve their financial goals. www.garycrusader.com

Cop shootings shouldn’t deter course of justice

Vernon A. Williams The problem with Ferguson is that we are acting like it really is a Ferguson problem. We act like Blacks on 35th and Halsted in Chicago have absolutely nothing to fear from the Chicago police or that a brother from Gary motoring through Portage has no chance of being targeted for driving while Black (DWB) or that Indianapolis Blacks don’t face similar risks. If you’ve been watching, listening to or engaging in dialogue or racial matters in America any time during the past century, you’ll notice that nothing changes but the technology and the people talking. There’s a few soldiers in Black media, the arts, education and various spots here and there along the trail of informed dialogue. But they are drowned out by the rationalists who believe we should be placated because we no longer have to ride the back of the bus, the apologists who offering lip-service to redemption without a strategy, and the con artists who try to sell us lies. Things were really looking hopeful a few months ago when people of all ages and all races were taking it to the streets from Seattle to Boston, from Minneapolis to Mobile. It really looked like the potential for sustained protests to force critical questions from the back burner to the main stage of civil discourse in the U.S. – particularly in New York. But just when hopes were high, two NYPD police officers were shot and killed. You haven’t seen many folks marching over bridges disrupting traffic since then, have you? Either protests dropped off altogether or the media refuses to cover it. In either case, serious momentum was broken – perhaps irretrievably. And while the shooting deaths of the New York City officers was tragic, it did not negate the legitimate grievances of the people. Shifting to Ferguson: the Department of Justice gave a free pass to the trigger-happy officer that wiped away the life of Michael Brown, but it did unveil a scathing report www.garycrusader.com

SLAIN NYPD DETECTIVES Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu. on racial profiling and bigotry that was proven to be systemic as 88 percent of the arrests involved Blacks. Judges, police chiefs, officers of the court and law enforcement officers lost their jobs behind the findings. Protestors returned to the streets because while the firings and resignations punished a few people involved, it did nothing to assure a system that would not simply result in new injustices brought on by the next set of perpetrators. Then during the protest, two police officers were shot and wounded. The injuries were not lifethreatening, the outcry from the law enforcement community and people of good will was deafening. Twenty-year-old Jeffrey Williams was arrested days later. He confessed to being the gunman but insists the bullets were aimed at someone else with whom he was arguing. “It’s possible, at this point, that he was firing shots at someone other than the police but struck the police officers,” said St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Bob McCulloch, who later added: “There were civilians between where the shooter was located and the officers.” Either way, the focus immediately shifted from the justified discontent of people abused by rampant institutional racism to the welfare of two wounded officers. It’s a delicate topic. All lives matter. But once again, this tragic sidebar should not become a red herring, distracting us from the real problem of bigotry in Ferguson (and the nation). The police shootings were deplorable and reckless – no matter what. But the over-arching concern that we face today must remain to be those rogue cops in every city in the nation whose bad behaviour makes them perpetrators – not victims. We need to stop acting like this is really all about Ferguson, MO. Face

it. It’s winter all over America. Unless we become more honest, more focused, more vigilant, and more (Continued on page 11 )

COMMUNITY In honor of March as Women’s History Month

Ola Kennedy: A 20th century trade union woman By Carmen M. Woodson-Wray Ola Kennedy has been described by many as a fighter, a force of nature and even her pastor said she reminded him of the character in the movie “True Grit.” As a woman active in the trade union industry, Kennedy stood for equal rights and fought for them. She held various positions at Local Union 1273, District 31 United Steelworkers and was one of the founding members of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionist. In addition to working in the union industry she was also past president and vice president of the Lake County Parks and Recreation Department, past president of the YWCA Trustee Board, employed with the Calumet Township Assessor’s Office for several years and was Director of Code Enforcement for the City of Gary as well. She also worked for 28 years at Hammond Valve. The Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations at the University of Michigan – Wayne State University did a project on “The Twentieth Century Trade Union Woman: Vehicle for Social Change” that highlighted Ola Kennedy back in 1978. The following is part of an interview with Kennedy for the project: Kennedy held many positions within her union, The United Steelworkers Union of America (USWA). She was Financial Secretary, Recording Secretary, Treasurer, and as a member of the Civil Rights Committee, the Negotiating Team, and the Women’s Caucus. She has worked through the union to eliminate job discrimination on the basis of sex and for equal pay for equal work at Hammond Valve and throughout the industry. She was active on the Ad Hoc Committee, an organization of black trade unionists within the USWA who worked towards a greater representation of blacks in the union. She was also active in the formation of the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) and the National Organization of Women (NOW). Kennedy felt that the labor movement was dying because the leaders of the movement, like industry executives, were not responsive to the rank and file. She encouraged people to become active and involved at the grassroots level as a means of returning the focus of the labor movement to the needs of working people. As a member of the Executive Council of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, their over-all concern was for Blacks in the trade union movement. She was head of the Gary chapter. 8

SATURDAY, MARCH 21, 2015

Ola Kennedy Kennedy said, “In my plant we don’t have too much of a threat of women losing the things that they gained. We might have an overall problem that we work towards, but as far as women losing some of their gains it just that it doesn’t seem to be a threat. I think one of the reasons is because most of the officials of the local are women… Women are always more involved then men in my local.” Kennedy’s daughter Ola Smith, named after her, said her mother was really into the union movement. She said, “She believed in it. She was a single mother taking care of four kids, but was always a fighter. She was very capable of running it. I called her a force of nature. If the men in the union would make a decision before she got there, they knew they were in trouble.” Ruth Needleman, a friend of Ola Kennedy, is the author of a book

U.S.W.A. MEMBERS—Ola Kennedy (center) is pictured with members of the United Steelworkers of America Local 65. about Black steelworkers in the 20th Century entitled “Black Freedom Fighters in Steel.” In this book she talked about Kennedy. She said, “Ola was a pioneer. She told me she was always a little rebellious. She led the lines, demonstrations and demanded equal rights for women. She refused a staff job because she said she wanted to serve the people. She fought from the bottom up and was a fighter to the end.” Ola Kennedy believed that the Women’s Movement would someday move faster. She said, “I think it’s going to move faster one day because I think women can really move things. The hardest thing is getting women together. There are those that don’t want change, but I think when women really get involved they can really change things. They

don’t just give up. The big job is getting them involved. I know I’ve found that to be the situa-

tion.” Ola Kennedy passed away November 10, 2009.

Bethune wants 4- and 5-year-olds

Wirt-Emerson orchestra brings home gold from ISSMA

Orchestra students conducts “Joy” during orchestra class at Wirt-Emerson Visual and Performing Arts High Ability Academy.

PARENTS ARE ENCOURAGED to register their 4 and 5 year olds for the only accredited preschool of its kind in Gary at Bethune Early Childhood Development as soon as possible because space is limited. The Gary Community School Corporation’s Bethune Early Childhood Development Center has opened registration for the 2015-2016 school year. Dr. Cheryl L. Pruitt, Superintendent of Schools, said research shows that the first five years are critical in child development. “Many of the important skills that contribute to a child’s success in school and in life are developed before formal schooling begins,” Pruitt said. “Children need to be guided and stimulated to become caring, thinking, confident, active individuals. This means providing them with an early childhood education program that nurtures social, emotional, physical and intellectual development. Bethune provides that.” Principal Ava Ligon said Bethune is the only accredited preschool of its kind in Gary.

“Bethune is unique in that we intentionally reach the child where they learn,” Ligon said. “The curriculum is designed to make sure that each student receives the optimal educational experience as early as possible. There are traditional, Montessori, and Special Needs classes available along with a Discovery Lab.” Registration is open to students who are presently 4 or will turn 5 after August 1, 2015. Registration packages are available at the school located at 2367 E. 21st Ave. Parent Assistant Casey Cornelius said registration is easy. “When parents pickup a package, they will receive a date to return the completed package and at that time they will need to bring the child to visit the nurse.” Cornelius said students and parents alike love the Bethune experience. “Parents recommend

Bethune for so many reasons. I’ve been told that they like it because their child seems to have so much fun while they learn especially in Discovery Labs,” she said. “Other reasons range from the principal knows every child by name to convenience. Morning session students are offered a nutritious breakfast. The district also provides free door-to-door bus transportation.” Bethune Early Childhood Development Center offers two sessions – 8:00 to 10:30 a.m. and noon to 2:30 p.m. The pre-school offers a state-approved developmentally appropriate curriculum taught by highly qualified staff, as well as speech, occupational, and physical therapy. For more information about Bethune Early Childhood Development Center, call (219) 8866542.

Wirt-Emerson Visual and Performing Arts High Ability Academy returned from the Indiana State School Music Association competition with 21 gold and 16 silver medals. Dr. Cheryl L. Pruitt, Superintendent of Gary Community Schools, said Wirt-Emerson musicians continue to show what highly qualified teachers partnering with focused and determined students produce. “I appreciate contests like ISSMA that offer students the opportunity to showcase their talents. Ultimately not only are they sharpening their musical skills, they are being empowered with life skills.” Pruitt believes contests like ISSMA promotes 21st century life skills increasing leadership, self-confidence, communication skills, and more. “I’m proud of them and I applaud each student for their individual and collective successes. However, we know none of this would be possible without the support of our parents and Wirt-Emerson staff.” At ISSMA, college professors evaluated students. ISSMA is an organization dedicated to providing educationally evaluated music performance activities for Indiana students and teachers. ISSMA also assists in the development of performance-oriented assessment of state and national musical academic standards. Roveli Grib, Wirt-Emerson orchestra teacher, calls the ISSMA experience priceless. ISSMA provides an opportunity for the students to feel a sense of accomplishment and pride.” Brianna Nichols, a violinist, said she appreciates the competition. “I get to see how other school orchestras operate,” said Brianna. “You can take what other students do to either help you improve upon something or opt not to include it.” She said she enjoys music because different time periods have different types of music. “When I need to relax or focus, I turn to my music.” Dr. Adrian Richie, Wirt-Emerson principal, said he wants his students to share their talent with the world. “We teach our students to dream big but if they’re going to dream, they’ve got to prepare and when they prepare, they are ready to perform and be judged. ISMMA helps students grow.” Wirt- Emerson VPA High Ability Academy ISSMA Results: GOLD MEDALISTS (Solo Category): Andrea Mathews-Bass, Khari Tucker–Viola, Jamal Harmon–Viola, Asia Lee–Violin GOLD MEDALISTS (Junior/Senior Large Ensemble Category) Andrea Mathews, Rebekah Moore, Kierra Fuller, Nadav Neal, Brianna Nichols, Darius Quarles, Khari Tucker, Kevin Wilson, Jayda Smith, Aaron Reese, Kyra Quarles, Asia Lee, Armoni Howard, Trevon Hodge, Daryanna Battle, Maya Leon, Jamal Harmon SILVER MEDALISTS (Solo Category): Lenora Neal–Violin Solo SILVER MEDALISTS (Large Ensemble Category): Erica Howard, Jessica Hightower, Emmanuel Collins, Vicena Young, Angel Woods, Akeshia Staley, Ciayrra Reed, Lenora Neal, Quashaundra Jones, Paris Hightower, Jada Dixon, Kayla Curtis, Shawnae Cunningham, Aaron Reese, Dericq Freeman Wirt-Emerson Visual and Performing Arts High Ability Academy is located at 210 N. Cop shootings and justice (Continued from page 7 ) strategic – it will never change. And if things weren’t already difficult enough, in comes the Lieutenant Governor of the State of Missouri, a Republican named Peter Kinder, to muddy the waters even farther insisting that the protestors in Ferguson were wrong because the Justice Department vindicating the officer who shot Brown – once again proving that age-old adage that it is better to be thought a fool than to

speak and remove all doubt. Attorney Gen. Eric Holder countered: “Clearly, these findings - and others included in the report demonstrate that, although some community perceptions of Michael Brown’s tragic death may not have been accurate, the widespread conditions that these perceptions were based upon, and the climate that gave rise to them, were all too real.” To that irrefutable fact, Lt. Gov. Kinder disrespectfully rebutted, “There is more racism in the Justice

Department than anywhere I see in the St. Louis area. We’ve come an enormous way in 50 years, that’s not to say that we don’t have still more to do. It is the left, it is the Eric Holder and the Obama left and their minions that are obsessed with race while the rest of us are moving on beyond it.” All I can say for the brothers and sisters who live anywhere in Missouri is, with friends in the lieutenant governor’s office like Kinder – who needs enemies?

CRUSADER SPORTS NEWS Indiana Fever preseason schedule features May 29 game “Lights Out” Lytle Highlights Choices for Champions Educational Program That Takes Aim at Startling Indiana Bullying Statistics

The Indiana Fever will host one preseason game prior to its 2015 regular season schedule, when it hosts the Washington Mystics on Friday, May 29, 12:00 p.m., at Indiana Farmer’s Coliseum (at Indiana State Fairgrounds). In an effort to take the team into the community, the Fever will host a pregame educational program that takes aim at one of the state’s most alarming school-aged trends. According to 2015 statistics from the Indiana Youth Institute, Indiana has the nation’s highest rate of students who have contemplated suicide (19 percent) and the country’s secondhighest rate of high school students attempting suicide (11 percent). To help combat those statistics, the Fever will conduct its annual Choices for Champions program promoting health, fitness, education, self-esteem and anti-bullying for students in grades 3 to 8. The Choices for Champions agenda begins at 9:45 a.m. The program is followed by a lunch

break from 11:00 a.m.until tipoff. There will be a visit by Indiana Pacers mascot Boomer and his Boomer Dunk Show at halftime of the game. In the Choices for Champions program, students will hear from successful leaders and role models including three-time Olympic gold medalist and WNBA champion Tamika Catchings and other Fever players. An anti-bullying program will be presented by Camishe Nunley, owner of the Healing Your Hidden Hurts agency dedicated to trauma survivors. Its “Building Resiliency In Children” anti-bullying program will deliver information on ways to create an atmosphere where bullying is not permitted. The Fever will also welcome UFC Legend, Chris “Lights Out” Lytle, to speak at the event with his own powerful message against bullying. A fourteen-year member of the Indianapolis Fire Department and a retired American Mixed Martial artist, boxer and UFC Champion, Lytle now battles another opponent – bullying. Lytle travels as a motivational speaker to schools, foundations and troops speaking on strength, discipline and resilience. Since becoming a father to a child with
