Curator’s Note:

Simplicity, an expression of freedom from pretense. In this exhibition we look at contemporary works in which the elegance of line and the composition of design are carefully executed to create abstract examples of complex ideas and techniques. Dabbling between the intentional and the unintentional, these artworks represent a line in creation between the automated functions of expression, and the intentional, yet meticulous application of decisions. We explore when drawing a squiggly line, imitating from the subconscious of the artist becomes art and subsequent, informed decision to apply color informs emotion and context.

Shawn Turung

Shawn Turung's recent work has evolved towards conceptual landscapes and sculptural formations that inhabit corner spaces.

The Corner pieces evolved from her Totem series (2015-2020), as the work became installation based and traversed multiple wall planes.

"The Corner work is special; I haven't seen any works that deliberately address that space....it's very compelling to create a piece specific to a corner."

Shawn’s landscape work are a combination of linework, the natural beauty of substrates and geometry which converge into elegant compositions. The works are assembled from various elements, including remnant design samples and materials taken or made for other projects. Shawn’s unique career in restoration, architectural painting and design are influences in the construction of her work.

Marietta Patricia Leis

We are pleased to present a selection of work by Marietta Patricia Leis in our upcoming group show, Simplicity. Her series, Gloaming, features reductive watercolor paintings on paper. The work is her recorded impression of the health of a place. Leis is known for her work in identifying a sense of place through reductive art practices. In Leis’s travels she pauses to look deeply into the past, present and future of the environment surrounding her. She takes a pulse, a temperature, a reading and then chart’s her experience. For Leis, she thinks of these as EKGs. The feelings she experienced are redacted into pure abstraction. The viewer is asked to engage with the work and search within themselves for the feeling and emotions expressed in the work.

“How is the heart, soul of a place doing—weak, steady, strong, faint, erratic?”

Bill Jehle

Bill Jehle, a new face in the New Mexico Art scene. Jehle, pronounced "yaylee," hails from El Centro, California. Jehle attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, Cal Arts and The Cooper Union. Jehle transplanted himself to Corrales recently and splits his time between his new home in New Mexico and his cabin in Colorado.

Jehle’s work is permeated with his various experiences as a lifelong artist and pursuer of design. His experience in architecture, surveying and design for audio systems for car manufacturing are essential elements of his work. Gestural lines, with a calligraphy style, overlay a substructure of architectural linework reminiscent of map making or planning in his work.

Frequently working on paper, Jehle’s use of bright colors elevate the delicate medium, adding visual depth through the thickness of the paint and the development of layers. The work remains light with a elegant feeling produced from the combination of components. For this exhibit, we explore the automated subconscious influence of Jehle's line work interacting with the application of paint on paper.

Robert M. Ellis 1922-2014

Robert M. Ellis was an American artists born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1922. His career as an artists spanned six decades following his service as a naval officer in WWII. Ellis worked as an educator, graphic designer, and museum director in addition to always creating his own artwork.

Following his navel service, Ellis used the G. I. Bill to attend the Cleveland Art Institute. He traveled to Mexico where he received is BA at Mexico City College in Mexico City before settling in California for a brief stint.

During the late 50s and early 60s in California, Ellis was influenced by the abstract expressionist's movement and modern arts movements popular to the area. He had acquired a large studio, formerly a grocery store and had ample space to work in. His works from this time period feature large loose brush strokes, elegantly placed in open white space. The work reflects earthy greens, ochre, lime and cobalt blues nodding to the lush green landscapes and vistas of California. These works form this time were often monumental in size, thanks to the large studio space.
