The Guide to Fashion & Shopping on Cape Cod

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
T
his fall we will once again be coordinating our Fall Fashion Hunt, where we give
participants a list of challenges to complete at small businesses across Cape Cod and then share on social media. The challenges include going into one of our designated local boutiques and putting together an outfit worthy of Audrey Hepburn or finding out from one of our restaurants the secret ingredient in one of their most popular dishes. Yours truly will be keeping track of who is doing what, and then I will choose a winner who will receive gift certificates from every participating business. So, if you like exploring the Cape; if you want to challenge your styling skills; if you think you are a winner, this month long event is for you! Like us on facebook or follow us on Instagram to find out more!

Neckline: Bow-Tie
Most women would not gravitate towards a bow-tie when looking for a feminine look but for this season, we encourage you to rethink your preconceived bowtie ideas. However, in order to keep up with trends whipping out and wear your father’s go-to bowtie for Sunday mass is not necessary. Designers all over have been playing with the bow-tie spectrum and by creating blouses with a looser and flower detail on the neckline, while still resembling the classic tie, the masculine accessory has transformed into a classy, feminine detail. Since a bow-tie neckline is such a statement, the perfect styling relies on balancing out the volume. When worn with an A-line skirt or wide-leg trousers, the perfect statement symphony is created that plays with the masculine tendencies of a bow-tie while still possessing a girly vibe. For a more casual look, try a bowtie blouse with boyfriend jeans and ballet flats.
Detail: Grommets
The hardware store is not the most fashionable location, everyone knows that. But hidden in these aisles are the latest fashion detail that have been embellishing runways all over the world. Grommets are proving to everyone that studs don’t have to be the only edgy accent to achieve a punk look. With detailing along the shoulders, grommets can transform any jacket into an industrial, stand-out piece. For a mellower, yet still powerful vibe, a cocktail dress with smaller grommet accents along the waistline show off a little skin and help create even more of a statement. Or for a tough aesthetic in an accessory, a handbag embellished with grommets allow for some edge in a subdued statement.
Print: Plaid
Hemline: Carwash
What you are witnessing here is the result of a glorious marriage between fringe and pleats: the carwash hemline. Some didn’t think it was possible, but hemlines got even funkier with these broad, dimensional panels. This edgy and blocky hem adds volume and texture to the bottom of your look so once again, balancing is key. To downplay
the statement, pair with a higher neckline to keep the look subtle, but intriguing. When worn with an Oxford or a simple blouse, it can become that perfect outfit to turn heads at the office. This style allows for some drama and fun to be integrated into your look, all while keeping it fashion forward and classy.
The fall season and plaid have always had a very close relationship -a simple pairing that just makes sense, But the twist on this classic print for this autumn is the pieces on which plaids are showing up. We’ve all heard of the school-girl plaid skirt but recently, plaid pencil skirts have been spotted on runways all over. And as the temperature drops, instead of reaching for your plain go-to outerwear, try a tartan trench. If you’re not quite ready to submit to colder seasons and wish to remain in your summer bliss for as long as possible, try plaids in lighter colors and thinner stripes to stay on trend and still remain in your idyllic dream world of warmer days.

n the fall, layering is key as the weather can go from autumn chill to Indian Summer pretty quickly, particularly at all day events. The good news is that the trendof-the-moment “festival fashion” lends itself very well to bohemian soft layers, denim styles, and sundresses that transition between seasons.

Catie Flynn started voice lessons when she was in third grade, but it took her overcoming her shyness in high school to embrace the performance and writing aspect of being a musician. Catie tries to mix things up by performing in different styles from ballads with strings to folk-country to jazz and Americana. One of her favorite covers to perform is also one of the first songs she learned on guitar: Joni Mitchell’s Case of You. F I T T O A T EE Local businesses are reinventing the graphic tee and giving back to the local community by Emma Childs
ARTICHOKE T-SHIRTS
F
ashion has acted as a language and method of expression for as long as society itself as existed. It enables for communication without spoken word. With choice styling and a simple glance, a conversation has been created. The options for creating your own style dialect are endless; studded combat boots, a crisp navy blazer, and of course the simple graphic tee. A graphic tee is one of the easiest ways to translate your thoughts to your wardrobe and local businesses on Cape make it easier and add a little more meaning behind a simple t-shirt. 22
Sean Fitzpatrick, of Cape Cloth, took notice of this method of fashionable communication and combined it with his appreciation for Cape Cod and its local community. In 2014, Fitzpatrick had an idea to help represent Cape Cod with pieces like hats, hoodies, tanks, and tee shirts, and give back to the locals the best he could. “I was born and raised here and felt there needed to be a simpler, better, and more stylish way of not only representing our community, but also helping it at the same time.” One dollar of every piece of clothing purchased is donated to local charity CapeAbilities. “It's
a big deal to contribute and give back to an area that molded me and shaped who I am,” Fitzpatrick said. The design process is collaborative one. After sketching out designs, Fitzpatrick then discusses with Jimi DeMeyer, and the two of them decide on colors and materials. As far as production goes, the chosen designs are then printed by a local printing company out of Yarmouth, Kaleidoscope Imprints. With the use of triblend fabric and ethically conscious companies, all Cape Cloth pieces are held to a certain standard to improve as many lives as possible. “It makes you feel good on all levels,” Fitzpatrick said. As equally as important as making each piece feel good and having an impact, Fitzpatrick likes to create intriguing designs that correlate with the uniqueness of Cape Cod. “People who live or visit Cape Cod know how special it is and "get it" so I like designs that give people a different perspective on something,” Fitzpatrick said. Always striving to give back to the community he loves, Fitzpatrick works hard to seek out other passionate individuals and creates as many opportunities as he can to make an impact in a resort area. Since the beginning,
Cape Cloth has strived to support Cape Cod and allow for each individual to have pride in our unique hometown. “I've been extremely fortunate to have a lot of support right away from the community, and I feel that's because the community knows I'm doing things for the right reasons. I want to make an impact here. Cape Cloth is nothing without the Cape Cod community,” Fitzpatrick gratefully adds. The Cape is overflowing with passionate and creative locals who take their mission to heart. Dynamic sister duo Katy and Lizzy Escher have also strived to redesign the classic graphic tee and elevate it by using the artistic opportunities that only Cape Cod could offer. The Escher girls always had inventive ideas and after combining each of their life experiences, the idea of ARTichoke was born. “The goal behind ARTichoke was to showcase independent artists on apparel; that was the canvas. So after talking about it for years we decided to take steps toward making ARTichoke a reality,” Lizzy Escher says. From there they learned the art of silk screening and started screening from bedrooms, kitchens, and basements studios. After selling at Craft Fairs and gaining
23

local support, the women decided to take the plunge and buy a bus so they could showcase their tees on the road. “But finally after growing enough we landed our own studio boutique in North Eastham,” Lizzy Escher adds. Like all artists, inspiration is the necessary spark. Lizzy and Katy use inspiration boards and notice any tee shirt styles that move them. After getting the creative juices flowing, they sketch away! “We have four main designers Katy, Lizzy, Andrew Jacob and Kai Potter,” Lizzy Escher adds. Once a design is chosen they begin to print. Continuing to support creative and passionate locals, ARTichoke has been collaborating with other artists and designers as well. “We strive to use our apparel as the canvas so we are excited to start showcasing talented new artist designs which is really what we based our company off of. (Thus the emphasized ART in ARTichoke.),” Lizzy Escher said. While ground-breaking businesses like Cape Cloth and ARTichoke give the graphic tee a twist, styling of your own tee can reinvent the entire idea and turn heads all on your own accord. Instead of sporting graphic tees solely as gym shirts or massive nightgowns, elevate them to your style standard by pairing one of your favorites 24
with a bold statement necklace. By adding some sparkle and detail, the look is a balance between classy and casual. And reinvention doesn’t have to end there. Why not take your unique tee (preferably one purchased from Cape Cloth or ARTichoke) and pair it with your go-to blazer for a professional yet easygoing, workplace ensemble. Or with designs as unique and considerate as those from Cape Cloth and ARTichoke, style the tee with your favorite denim to revamp the classic ‘tee-shirt and jeans’ look we all know too well. There are countless options on how to break the graphic tee norm, but of course the most important part is the shirt itself, so make sure it’s something you are comfortable in and can move around freely. “I think first and foremost, the material of a T-shirt is paramount to anything else,” Fitzgerald said. “A good tee should fit well, flatter the person's shape, and feel good against the skin,” he adds. The graphic tee is not a revolutionary concept but with tees that are created by driven individuals with a lot of heart, the entire idea is transformed. And when those people care about their local environment and give back in many ways, it becomes something more than just clothes. “Happiness comes from enjoying where you live and the life that you live,” Fitzgerald says. “I've been extremely fortunate to have a lot of support right away from the community, and I feel that's because the community knows I'm doing things for the right reasons. I want to make an impact here.” he adds. And just by purchasing and wearing a tee from a local business like Cape Cloth or ARTichoke, as a consumer, you can make an impact as well.

S T Y L E PROFIL E Emily Richardson by Amanda Converse
E
mily Richardson’s brand Homegrowntrades embodies boho chic, and is regularly seen at festivals and events across the Cape. This past spring Emily decided to open her own shop under the same moniker on 6A in Orleans. Here we find out more about the roots of her trade, and the heart of her inspiration.
28
CQ: Can you tell me a little bit about your background? ER: I grew up on the Cape and graduated from Nauset, and like any small town kid couldn't wait to go see what else was out in the world. CQ: When did you start sewing? ER: I started my business years ago when I just needed a little extra money and started sewing handbags and jewelry. Back then I toured around the East Coast in my Volkswagen bus, and would stop at different and offer my products.
CQ: How did it evolve into a business and then an even bigger business? ER: Over the years as my designs got more refined and more popular, I decided it was worth taking more seriously. On a visit back to the Cape, I decided to get a summer job at The Farm in Orleans, where I met my future husband, Sean, and he finally got me to settle down here. I started doing craft shows and festivals and slowly over the last couple years begin doing consignment and wholesale around the Cape. As my business grew and my brand Homegrowntrades started to become known, I got more inspired. It is always been important to me to use sustainable earth friendly products, and I always had a hard time finding cool fresh looking products that fit this model, so this is what I based my brand on. In a lucky turn of events this past winter an opportunity fell into my lap to open a shop, something I've always wanted to do, but never thought I would be able to do so soon. It was a leap of faith but one I am so glad I took. Since the opening of Homegrowntrades boutique this spring I have had a wonderful outpouring of support from the community. I think the best thing I've learned about starting my own business is that it's important to follow your heart and do what makes you happy; even if you're not always sure it will work out.
And now that I have the space in the shop to spread out, I am offering a home goods line including my handmade Ottomans, table runners, tea towels, pillows, and other home decor.
CQ: What materials do you use? ER: My line is made from organic and sustainable materials. I love to use organic cotton, soy, bamboo, and hemp textiles. These fibers are highly sustainable and eco-friendly, as they need no pesticides or herbicides to grow. They are very fast growing so they do not need much farmland to turn over crops for replanting. The gorgeous feathers in my Feathered Collection are gathered from my own CQ: What products do you make? flock of beautiful and really well loved hens. and other accessories and gifts. What I don't make myself I strive to find companies with the most ethical and conscious practices and materials. Every day we all have the opportunity to make more conscious decisions about the things that we buy, and the way we live our lives, and I encourage my customers to live more consciously. CQ: How would you describe Cape Cod style? ER: The Cape to me has always been a cool laid back small community with a unique vibe. WAR DROBE WA N T Fringe
F
by Amanda Converse
ringe is the eye-catching and fun detail of the season and it is available in every form and on every part of the clothing from sleeves to hems. The flowy strands of material are for those who like to stretch fashion boundaries, and those who stick to a classic style – you just have to find the piece (or pieces) that work for you, whether it be a skirt, sweater, bag, shoe, jewelry, or a dress. Moderation is important to keeping it stylish and not gimmicky, so try and stay away from head to toe fringe. Also, be careful it doesn’t add bulk to the parts of the body that you might not want enhanced. If you have a large bust, do not get a top or a dress with fringe on the chest. For those who might have a little more to love on the backside should probably stay away from fringe that hits that spot. Regardless of body type, anyone can rock a little bit of fringe without looking like you are wearing a Halloween costume. 32
