FALL 2016

The Guide to Fashion & Shopping on Cape Cod C O M P L I M E N TA R Y

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

I

t is so hard to believe that this is our 5th Fall Issue! Time has flown and stood still, and there have been so many ups and so many downs as we have evolved this little magazine. There are so many people who deserve thanks as they have helped bring this magazine to where it is today – most notably our advertisers who have continued to support our vision and our mission issue after issue. When I began working on The Current Quarterly, I quite literally had no idea what I was doing (shhh! Don’t tell anyone!). The only thing I knew I wanted to do was to entertain and delight, but also (most importantly) to impact people’s shopping decisions. I wanted to show people that shopping on Cape Cod means that you can find everything you could want or need, as well as clothing and other goods that are unique and beautiful, and affordable. So, now four years later, I am asking for your feedback – have we educated you on the importance of shopping local, and have you discovered new go-to spots for finding clothing and other goods? How has The Current Quarterly influenced your purchasing decisions? Message me, tweet me, email me, tag me – I would love to know if I have had any successes in doing what I set out to do! Dress Local,

RUNWAY RUNDOWN Ever hear a fashion buzz word and wonder what the heck the stylists are talking about? Here is your guide to the trends of the season.

Fall Colors MOSS

DUSTY ROSE

CHARCOAL

Look: Goth

We are not suggesting you wear all black and heavy boots (unless that’s your thing, then totally go for it!). No, the goth trend will sneak in to your closet or make up bag in ways you may not even notice, whether it be metal details on tops, pants and shoes, or a red wine colored lipstick.

Hemline: Boot Cut

Forget the skinny jean, the wide leg, the flair (well, maybe don’t forget them entirely- they’re still cute!), the hemline of the season is the ever and always flattering boot cut. This straightleg-to-a-slight-flair pairs well with booties, sneaks, or heels and makes your legs appear as though they go on forever.

Waistline: Corsetted Gone are the days of wearing rib crushing waist trimming corsets (thank goodness), and these days we embrace our natural waists. Still, accenting the waist adds femininity to any outfit and belts with corset-like details or corseting on dresses and tops is the way to do it this season.

Material: Patent Leather

You may remember wearing patent leather Mar y Janes as a kid (or have photographic evidence of such), but the use of patent leather has evolved this season. Yes you will see it in the perennial black pump, but you can also incorporate it into your wardrobe with belts and bags, and our new favorite: accented sleeves.

T

he Cape Cod Airfield has been flying planes in and out of Marstons Mills for almost 100 years – and is a great spot to watch the sunset, have a picnic and catch skydivers flying. The wide open field, industrial work space, and vintage planes were also the perfect back drop for our fall photo shoot that features classy and classic looks from local boutiques. STYLE PROFILE

R

Rebecca Jean

ebecca Shanahan moved to Cape Cod from New Jersey with her parents and three siblings in 1992. After graduating from Nauset High School in 1998 she went on to study painting and ceramics at Salve Regina in Newport RI. After college Rebecca returned to Cape Cod where she began working for a local fashion designer. After seven years of managing her Orleans location, she left to raise my two boys, Seamus & Mason. This past year, as both of her children had reached school age. Rebecca decided to open up her own design studio and retail shop on Chatham Main Street (#649) – Rebecca Jean - where she now dreams up her creations, and sends them off to Brooklyn for manufacturing.

CQ: When did you become interested in fashion? RS: My mom tells me when I was really little I would spend hours putting outfits together and modeling them for her. Other than that I think my love for fashion and design really

took off in college when I knew what I wanted to wear but couldn't find it in stores. I had a real desire to express myself through what I wore, So, I began going to fabric stores and using what little money and sewing experience I had to make my own skirts and dresses. CQ: What was the first thing you designed? RS: The first thing I remember designing was a halter top. I took my little brother’s royal blue thermal, cut the sleeves off and the back out, it was awesome! It was 1995 on Cape Cod and things like that weren't available in stores. The first dress I designed was inspired by a long flowing dress with a sweet heart neckline that my mother wore on her honeymoon. Today I sell a more casual, cotton version in my store in Chatham, it's called the Rebecca dress, I did it in several plaids and florals. It's arguably my favorite still. CQ: What is your design process and where do you find inspiration? RS: My aim is to make pieces that are simple and comfortable, yet flattering and different from what else is out there. I design what I want to wear and what I hope every woman wants to wear...I love that I can throw on one of my dresses and some flip flops and head to the bus stop or playground with my boys. However, my designs are versatile. You can easily layer a Rebecca~Jean dress with a blazer or sweater and head to work, or dress it up with heels and some jewelry for dinner. They can be worn with tights and boots in the cooler months,

and sandals in the warmer. My inspiration comes from everywhere: nature, TV, art, magazines... I love color and fabric and the way a pattern or color combination can speak to me and make me feel something, change a mood or express one. CQ: What made you want to manufacture in the U.S.? RS: The designer I worked for after college manufactured her designs in New England. Before 35

that I really didn't think about where my clothes were made or if people were receiving fair pay to make them. So from her I learned the importance of supporting our local economy and the quality control that comes from manufacturing locally. When customers come into my store I am so proud to be able to say that all my dresses are handmade here in the U.S CQ: How would you describe Cape Cod style? RS: Cape Cod style is eclectic and artistic - anything goes! I do think laid-back and comfortable is an overall theme, but laid back doesn't have to mean boring or the same as everybody else.

WARDROBE WANT Athleisure by Amanda Converse

J

ust a few years ago, women were shamed when they wore yoga pants in public, but as the athletic wear industry has evolved and tried to corner more of a market share, they have begun to make pieces that can move from the gym to a night out, and yoga class to the office quite easily – thereby defining them as athleisure. But we predict that soon the term athleisure will not even be a “thing” anymore, as pieces that are seen as fashionable athletic wear now, will just be ‘fashionable’ in the near future. Dresses made with sweatshirt material, more stylized sweatshirts made with silks and satins, fitted and sleeker tanks and tees, high fashion sneakers, and stretchy pants with an elastic waist are on display in every local boutique and becoming a staple in every woman’s closet. Just like every other fashion collection, athleisure pieces follow recent trends from leather accents and bright colors to cut outs and color blocking; and the pieces can be accessorized with jewelry, bags and shoes for an added statement. But the differences will always remain that this class of clothing is transitional in nature and most of all, they are easy to wear and comfortable. 40
