hen planning vacations or business trips, there is probably no one needed more than your own Travel Agent. Checking plane and cruise line schedules and coordinating them with the rental car and hotel can be a daunting as well as an exhausting experience. You may find yourself needing a vacation from planning your vacation! And if you are a member of a particular group or organization planning an annual meeting or needing to raise funds, you want to involve everyone in the group, right? And what better way than to go somewhere everyone has an interest, and make that a vacation, too! For these reasons, we have selected the travel agency, CruiseKatz, for this interview. We want to find out more about these women and their travel company and what they have to offer that is different from your “run of the mill” travel agency. What is it they offer in the way of luxury, experience, and vacations? ELITE MAGAZINE: So, right off the mark, tell us about yourselves. Sandra, you go first. SANDRA: Kathryn and I have been in the travel industry for 7 years now. Mostly I used the product – travel – for myself, family and friends. We have booked an occasional cruise or flight for acquaintances and others. But, as time has gone by, I am finding myself wanting to help people see more of this beautiful planet. Together we are planning several vacation/events that will do just that. Your readers will appreciate our attention to the details. ELITE MAGAZINE: And Kathryn, how do you and Sandra work together? KATHRYN: I believe we work very well together. I’m the techie one (laugh) – creating the vacation/ event, building the websites; Sandra comes up with marketing ideas, finding the places to visit and together we discuss all the possibilities with our contacts. Sandra helps me get a handle on the excitement I tend to generate; it’s hard to not get excited because we realize we want to go on these vacations, too. But, at the end of all this planning, we present to our clients a pretty amazing vacation! Our target is group travel; however we also work with families and individuals who want a unique experience rather than just a vacation. Simply put, we offer amenities that go over or above what is traditionally offered by the cruise line or tour group; we are planners and producers of special events at sea or on land. ELITE MAGAZINE: vacation/events?
Are you currently working on any special
SANDRA: Yes, we are working on an exciting cruise for some of the Garden Clubs in Florida. The itinerary includes: flying to London, England; boarding a luxury cruise liner and sailing to Amsterdam, Holland; Rouen, France: and Antwerp, Belgium. We have plans to visit some of the most spectacular European springtime gardens, castles and other points of interest. Some of our guests will be staying in London for a post-cruise vacation. KATHRYN: It is satisfying to know these ladies and their guests will be cruising in a part of the world they may have never thought to visit. When you think about cruising, what comes to mind is the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Alaska or Hawaii. While those cruises and ports are beautiful and some folks love to return year after year, we are trying to introduce an out-of-the-ordinary trip – somewhere our client would not ordinarily go in order to see and experience a country or region, but most of all realize the value of such a vacation. Some of our clients want to do more, and when they think about the unique over-all experience we can provide – their vacation becomes more valuable. ELITE MAGAZINE: Are you working on any other vacation/events? KATHRYN: Yes. Plans are to create a concert cruise with a group of musicians. This target organization allows for the musician to perform in the home of interested persons where a dinner is planned. The guests listen to the music offered, the musician can promote his work, and the guests donate to his continued success. Imagine how that would work on a cruise from Ft. Lauderdale to San Francisco while navigating through the Panama Canal; being serenaded on the entire trip – attending concerts on each evening at sea. That is a Vacation Event in the truest sense. The organization is planning this cruise as a fundraising vacation/event benefiting the musicians while experiencing the environment of the Panama Canal – Wow! Anyone interested in supporting this group is welcome to cruise along. SANDRA: We also have on the drawing board a “seminar-atsea” for Event Planners. This will be a balance of work and play as the group wants to have speakers talking on relevant topics and programs. We do not have the destination yet, but I am thinking somewhere in the Pacific. Many Event Planners work with couples
planning destination weddings and honeymoons and what is more romantic that an over-the-water Pacific Island sunset? Don’t you agree? ELITE MAGAZINE: What would you determine to be the most frequent type of vacation that is asked for now days by your clients? SANDRA: There are many. Our clients want to satisfy their dream vacations; check off that bucket list – if you will. Going to places like the wine country in Italy or France; then visiting Napa Valley in California to compare notes – by the way, there is a spectacular train journey through the valley. Israel, the Holy Land and the Orient, as well as the Amazon, and the Panama Canal are on those lists. What I have noticed, in the several years of being in the travel industry, even though places to visit seem to cycle in popularity, each generation of client has a different purpose for visiting a particular country or region. It’s not just the baby-boomers anymore. Oh, I might add there is an emerging interest in sailing to parts of the Arctic, too. Can’t you just imagine the Northern Lights, scenery and wildlife? KATHRYN: Our clients and your readers have acquired a respect and interest in the environment and want to experience the world. We have placed ourselves into a position to offer those experiences. Many want to visit and share these experiences with their family, too. The only way to get everyone together at the same time is not at the traditional family reunion picnic anymore. The children of the baby-boomers are well educated and want the experience, too. Dad and Mom may be in the position to pay for the trip while at the same time enjoying quality time with their children and grand-children. It is a win-win vacation/enrichment experience. By the way, one cruise line we work with has introduced a 42-day Amazon trip that we are dying to find a couple or group

to experience. It will take a small ship to navigate this river and this company has the perfect, 800-passenger classic liner. Quite the educational experience, don’t you agree? SANDRA: The “Heritage” type vacation is being asked for, too, so - we plan trips traveling around this wonderful country of ours. There are many sites to see, as well as historic trails, magnificent mansions, and nostalgic tours. People are surprised when we offer trips like the N’Orleans French Quarter or Memphis and St. Louis Jazz and Blues, all while cruising on a luxurious paddle wheel boat down the Mighty Mississippi River. KATHRYN: And when was the last time you visited San Francisco and the Fisherman’s Wharf or witnessed that very famous fog? From San Francisco you could cruise to Alaska – visiting ports along the way that hold beauty as well as historic significance – all without ever needing a passport. Taking a Heritage tour is where America’s story becomes yours. As your readers get to know us, they’ll realize we have taken the time to research, train and visit these places; enabling us to provide the best possible way for them to enjoy their adventure. Your readers and our clients really appreciate an environmentally sensitive experience. Alaska is a beautiful example. ELITE MAGAZINE: And what would you say is your ideal Luxury vacation/event or trip? SANDRA: Cruising is the ideal luxury vacation; to our clients, we suggest cruising on ships within the Cunard group, or any one of the yachts or small ships. We have access to these companies, and enjoy a wonderful relationship. On board are amenities not offered on the larger ships, and the ports are more exotic and less visited - not as “touristy”. This would be a more intimate, less crowded experience. However, you can take a very nice cruise on a mega ship by securing a suite of staterooms with balconies; where you could watch the sunrise in privacy, if you wish. KATHRYN: The small ships can offer culinary classes and other enrichment programing because the passenger list is small. World cruises are extremely popular, because of the variety of countries visited. However, I am more inclined to go “All-Inclusive” when I think of luxury. The resorts we work with in the Caribbean and the Pacific offer secluded over-water bungalows, private beaches and pool areas off your suite, as well as English butler service. Our client could schedule a business meeting or conference and at the end of the day meet their spouse or significant other in the relaxed comfort of a couple’s massage or a gathering around the fire-pit enjoying others’ company. By the way, leave your wallet in the safe. When it states “All-Inclusive” – it means just that, everything is included: food, beverages, entertainment, water sports, everything! Second on my list would be that great experience I spoke of earlier - cruising the Amazon. Talk about tropical environment! Who’s ready to go with me? ELITE MAGAZINE: Sounds like you – Sandra and Kathryn – and your company, CruiseKatz can meet the needs of the individual as well as the group when it comes to luxury, vacations and events. Is there anything else you might want to share with our readers about your company and what you offer? KATHRYN: Yes. Even though our company is CruiseKatz – that doesn’t mean we specifically concentrate on cruising. One can “cruise” into a restaurant… (laugh). Our company specializes in the experience the trip can offer the individual or group, by satisfying their needs, first. We find out what that is when we visit with our 14
clients. We gain their trust when we show our genuine interest in what They want and are able to provide it. The special events we plan range from private gatherings, private dinners or parties and business seminars. The unique experience happens when our clients visit the destination. We take care of all the details, including private shore excursions when cruising or land tours for the group staying in hotels. SANDRA: We know most important to the luxury traveler is personalized services; they are moving away from ostentatious consumption, and have an emerging awareness of green and ethical principles. We understand that cost matters, and it is not necessarily “you get what you pay for”, but when they pay for it, our clients appreciate the vacation, the environment and the experience. Many of those experiences are defined by their exclusivity, by offering amenities that cannot be obtained elsewhere. We know where to go to get this for our clients, whether it is a couples vacation or a family or business group. We plan and produce a special experience; wonderful memories included. ELITE MAGAZINE: Thank you both for an interesting conversation. We all wish you much success in your travel future. In order for our readers to make contact with you and your company, they may either call you, Kathryn at 352-277-7300 or email either Sandra or Kathryn at ks@cruisekatz.com. You, also, have a website where our readers and prospective clients can get more information: www. cruisekatz.com . s the summer starts to cool off, the call of fisherman to the sea is as constant as the changing tide. Living in the Tampa Bay area, answering that call is as simple as planning a trip to some of the hottest fishing spots in the world, some of which are located right out in the Gulf of Mexico. Even as a local though, most of these trips force a long drive to the coast followed by a several hour boat ride out to the fishing location and sometimes a deflating long trip back to the mainland. Rather, picture yourself waking up in a floating luxury hotel that you traveled to the day before, eating a delicious breakfast and boating a short distance to active fishing areas in the Gulf of Mexico. Then after your fill of fishing, diving, and water sports, you return back to a world-class resort greeting you with all of the comforts you would expect from a luxury hotel. This depiction is exactly how Christopher Longrie, Director of Operations, describes the inception and creation of Fisherman’s Paradise. “A small group of avid fisherman came up with the idea while fishing out in the Middle Grounds, which is where some of the best fishing in the area is. At the end of the day, one of the guys got on the radio and pretended as if he was calling into a ‘mothership’ to have steaks and cocktails prepared and said, ‘we should put a hotel out here.’ Seven years later, here we are!”

e s i d ara true to its name. The barge has been converted into a 385-foot long by 85-foot wide floating resort. It is so big that it has created its own mini ecosystem. Bait can be seen piled up around the vessel and large gulf predators can be easily spotted patrolling the outer edges of the bait swarms. In order to check in, guests can dock their boat at the resort or travel to the Fisherman’s location by shuttle boat provided by Fisherman’s Paradise. After spending over six years on construction this palatial resort boasts something for every angler and non-angler alike. The resort offers four star accommodations and when you walk into the interior of the resort, your jaw will drop. They spared no expense when converting the former transatlantic pipeline barge into the beautiful ‘Floatel’ that it currently is. The 75,000 square feet of interior space is finished with all of the amenities that you would expect when staying at a Ritz-Carlton or other highend resorts. Throughout the interior of the vessel all of the finishes are leather, wood, granite, stone and Italian marble. Some of the amenities include a fully equipped fitness center with steam room, a beautifully appointed Salon for large gatherings, Spa with massage tables and manicure and pedicure stations and a fresh water pool with swim up bar and sun deck. Guests on board will be able to dine on some of the finest gourmet breakfast, lunches and dinners on the Gulf Coast and be able to choose the perfect bottle of wine from their 900 bottle wine cellar to compliment their meal.

Luxury getaway on the world’s best beach What do you need in a vacation? Comfort without fuss? Warmth mixed with refreshing trade winds? Natural beauty? Excellence in service performed at a relaxed pace with a certain charm? Then make some time for the Turks & Caicos Islands, where your pulse rate is sure to slow down. Turks and Caicos is actually made up of over 40 islands and cays east south east of the Bahamas, spanning a distance of less than 100 miles from east to west and even fewer north to south. Just eight are inhabited, each reflecting distinct natural beauty, history and culture. Most visitors spend their time on Providenciales, the perfect place to unwind, but trips to the outer islands are highly recommended if you are looking to get a better impression of this small lively nation. Scheduled air flights and well organized excursions are readily available. Providenciales’ Grace Bay Beach consistently receives accolades as the world’s best beach. It was named after Grace Hutchings, an early visitor in 1892, in honor of her beauty, style and of course grace. This pristine 12 mile beach seems to have that perfect combination of fine white powder sand, expansive vistas, constant breezes and yet no crowds. The sea colors will stay with you forever; shades of Tiffany blue, turquoise, cobalt and more; and the sunsets are not to be missed. Many of the country’s most luxurious resorts are here, making for easy movement between one world class refreshment experience to another. Of course there’s nothing like becoming a ‘local’ in your own luxury resort, and one that has received the World Travel Award for the Caribbean’s Leading Boutique Hotel from 2005 to 2010 is Point Grace, Luxury Resort & Spa. The resort is appropriately named as it sits on the ‘point’ half way along Grace Bay Beach where with it’s expanse of white sand and untamed beauty you feel like you are on your own desert island. The resort’s magnificent suites, restaurants and spa are all inspired by classic turn-of-the-century British Colonial architecture creating a West Indian setting untouched by time. The islands are a divers feast with close to shore wall drops of up to 8,000 feet. Humpback whales pass by during Spring whaling season. Nature can be found in many forms from turtles to osprey eagles. Fitness lovers will find quality gyms, classes and watersports with expert tuition. Kite-boarding, triathlons, 5/10K runs, sea-swims are all pursuits to join in. Tennis, golf and horse-back riding are all catered for, again with experts on hand. Fishing from bone fishing to deep sea fishing is world class. There is plenty to do if you are looking to be active.

World class chefs seek to impress you with their signature dishes creating a cosmopolitan fare, but Caribbean and nativestyle dishes abound with the fresh catch of the day and the country’s own Conch. Dining is everything from a simple to luxurious experience. You’ll find a huge selection of wines and drinks on offer too. Point Grace’s elegant gourmet restaurant, Grace’s Cottage, has specialized in pairing fine wines with inspired cuisine for many years now. Come, take time to enjoy cuisine at it’s best, in the best possible settings. Your body and soul have already entered a new dimension, where you feel energized but utterly peaceful. The Point Grace Thalasso Spa is all you need to further the restoration process. Treatments are European in style; Thalassotherapy using the islands natural resources and Thalgo products. The setting is truly West Indian; white washed exquisite cottages just set back from the natural beach dunes with inspiring sea views and breezes. Turks and Caicos is very accessible with many international flights. It’s just over an hour from Miami and two and a half hours from New York amongst many routes. Your first vision of the islands from the plane will be awe inspiring. You’ll finally know you are on vacation. Getting through the soon to be expanded small airport terminal is fine but a discrete courteous fast track VIP Flyers service is available; Turks and Caicos will give you the luxury you desire at every step. Those that live in the islands keep their history and culture close to their hearts, but they also move with the times and going-green, ecotourism and government-reform are all hot topics. There is certainly a pride in the islands that we do things our way, we don’t just follow others, and that gives the islands a spirit all to their own. If you chose to visit Turks and Caicos you’d very likely become one of our many return visitors, so we hope to see you very soon.

NEW 4 SERIES A BIGGER, LIGHTER, SPORTIER COUPE
26
Elite Tampa Bay
August 2013
T
he loss of the BMW 3 Series coupe would be worth mourning, revered as it is for its superior handling prowess. But the 4 Series coupe arriving for 2014 is no mere replacement. With sleeker styling and a lower center of gravity, the new coupe is even more of a quasi sports car than its predecessor was. Introducing it as a 4 Series—the first car to get this BMW moniker—is part of a broader move to use even numbers for all coupes and odd numbers for all sedans. Though the automaker hasn’t officially said so yet, the 4 Series is expected to add a convertible and possibly a Gran Sport in coming years. The all-new 2014 BMW 4 Series coupe is bigger, and yet lighter, than the model it replaces, with the promise of better driving dynamics. It takes on a more aggressive stance, making the most of the 1.7 inches of width it gains. But lightweight materials, including aluminum components in the engine, more than offset the extra bulk. It weighs 44 to 99 pounds less than the current 3 Series coupe, depending on the configuration.
The 4 Series coupe also sits closer to the ground, giving it the lowest center of gravity of any current BMW. This should help it feel more agile, like a true sports car. The new proportions of the 4 Series make it noticeably sleeker than the outgoing model. The look is remarkably similar to the Concept 4 Series coupe that BMW showed at the Detroit auto show in January. Wide wheel arches bulge seductively from the rear fenders. The triangular back windows are much longer than those of the 3 Series coupe and emphasize the rakish roofline. The 3 Series coupe had been based on the

3 Series sedan. But BMW wants to set the new 4 Series apart, giving the 2014 coupe a style of its own rather than just creating a two-door version of its bigger predecessor. Several details at the front of the car help achieve this goal, including a unique design for the bumper and lower air inlets. The 4 Series coupe has Air Curtains and Air Breathers similar to those on the new BMW X5. These oddly named aerodynamic features reduce turbulence and improve fuel economy by pulling in air from the lower bumper, funneling it around the front wheels and sending it out slits to the rear of the front fender. The two engines in the 4 Series carry over from the 3 Series. Both come with an eight-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual. The 428i has a 240-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine good for 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.7 seconds with either transmission. The 435i has a 300-hp turbocharged six-cylinder engine that will do 0 to 60 mph in 5 seconds with the automatic or 5.3 seconds with the manual. The top speed for both cars is electronically limited to 155 mph. BMW made no mention of offering a diesel engine in the United States.
Rival coupes include the Audi A5, Cadillac CTS and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The 2014 BMW 4 Series coupe undercuts the E-Class’ base price by almost $10,000, but is $3,575 and $2,520 more expensive than the Audi and Cadillac, respectively. The 4 Series coupe will be available with a choice of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (which BMW refers to as xDrive). All-wheel drive adds $2,000 to the base price. Hardcore car enthusiasts will appreciate that they can pair rear-wheel drive with a stick shift—their dream configuration. The six-speed manual is a no-cost option, with one exception. It is unavailable on the all-wheel-drive version of the 428i. The eight-speed automatic comes standard. This high-tech transmission significantly improves fuel economy on other BMW models that already use it, helping to improve the 3 Series sedan’s by 4 miles per gallon overall, for example. It should do the same for the new 4 Series. Official fuel economy estimates are not out yet. Tech wizardry on the new 4 Series coupe is plentiful. A list of accident-avoidance systems comes standard, including blind-spot and lane-departure warnings, and automatic braking if a camera in the rearview mirror detects an impending collision with a pedestrian or other vehicle.
The 428i starts at $41,425, and the 435i starts at $46,925. The 2014 BMW 4 Series arrives in showrooms in late summer.
The latest version of BMW’s Active Cruise Control can even take over the task of driving the car in slow traffic, with an automatic stop and go function to handle traffic jams.
Though the pricing is higher than both the 3 Series sedan and the outgoing 3 Series coupe—by several thousand dollars—it puts the 4 Series right in the center of the competition.
But the biggest surprise is that BMW will include a key service, eCall with Advanced Collision Notification, free for 10 years as part of its

BMW Assist program. The service automatically alerts a contact center in the event of a collision and relays data from sensors in the car—including the severity of the crash and the number of people injured—to local emergency responders as they head to the scene. (To read more about this feature, click here.) BMW also says using the technology in the 4 Series’ center console will be easier, with navigation, online access and voice commands among the features getting major upgrades for 2014. The iDrive system, as BMW calls its user interface, has a large knob to control menus on the freestanding flat screen atop the dashboard. One of the most interesting changes is that, when the 4 Series is equipped with the optional navigation system, a touchpad is incorporated into the top of the knob. This lets users scrawl numbers and letters with their fingertip to enter an address. Cargo-carrying flexibility improves in the 2014 BMW 4 Series coupe with a rear seat that can be folded down in 40:20:40 segments. Put the center segment down to accommodate skis, yet still have seating for four people. And as with other recent BMWs, you can pop the trunk by swiping a foot under the bumper with the optional Comfort Access package. When the new 4 Series coupe goes on sale soon, four trims will be available. Buyers who want more than the standard model can upgrade to a Luxury, Sport or M Sport version, same as with the 3 Series. All of the upgrades include 18-inch wheels to provide a more performance-oriented look, and the 435i can go even bigger with optional 19-inch wheels. The Luxury line adds elegance with high-gloss chrome touches inside and out, along with leather seats. Black accents distinguish the Sport line, with some red highlights inside, such as red stitching on the sport steering wheel. Both the Sport and M Sport versions come with a sport suspension for rear-wheel-drive models. But the M Sport line is for those who want to dial up the performance even further. It includes M Sport brakes with blue calipers and the M aerodynamic package with components like larger air intakes in the front bumper, a rear diffuser and side skirts. The inside has a special leather steering wheel and driver’s footrest, among other M-specific design elements. The 4 Series gets an upgraded iDrive system, including a touchpad on the top of the knob. (Credit: BMW) Exclusive to the M Sport version of the 4 Series coupe, Estoril Blue Metallic will be available as an exterior paint color. The color has become a calling card of sorts for BMWs wearing the vaunted M badge, having been offered on previous high-performance models such as the M3 and M5. The company says the 4 Series marks a new era for BMW coupes, and not just in nomenclature. The “4” in car’s name is meant to underscore its standout design and sharpened driving dynamics. “Any way you look at it, the new 4 Series coupe represents something more than its BMW 3 Series cousins—3+1, if you will,” the company said in its press release. The 2014 BMW 4 Series coupe arrives in showrooms any day now. August 2013

Lions Must Be Protected,
Not on the Menu
By Jamie Veronica
R
ecently, a South Tampa restaurant that specializes in exotic meat tacos added a very disturbing new menu item: lion.
I’d like to be able to say this was a one-time publicity stunt. I’d like to be able to say this was the first occurrence of lion meat on a menu in America. But I can’t. Just last month, a Japanese restaurant in San Francisco began serving lion skewers to patrons. Both restaurants were immediately bombarded with complaints and concerns from the public; the San Francisco restaurant did the right thing and halted the sale of lion meat. The Tampa restaurant did not. As one of the country’s most outspoken advocates for big cats, Tampa’s Big Cat Rescue started receiving calls and emails about the Tampa restaurant’s plan to serve lion shortly after the owner began boasting about it on Facebook. Disgusted animal lovers could not believe serving lion is legal, and certainly found it unethical. Sadly, it is still legal to serve lion meat because lions are considered “vulnerable” rather than “endangered.” This despite the fact that the number of lions left in the wild is estimated to have dwindled by half in just the past 10 years. The Tampa restaurant’s owner claimed he purchased the lion meat from a “legitimate source” in California that raises lions in captivity to be slaughtered for their meat. He also claimed the meat is USDA inspected. However, a 2010 investigation by the animal advocacy group Born Free USA found that the USDA does not have a role in regulating the slaughter and sale of lion meat. The investigation also showed that neither the USDA nor FDA say they are aware of where lions slaughtered for meat originate and are, therefore, unable to guarantee how safe the meat is for human consumption. The safety of consuming a predator such as a lion is a very real issue. Predators eat so many different animals that they often accumulate

numerous parasites and diseases. Even the handling of a predator’s carcass by a human can be fatal. It is also extremely difficult to confirm that restaurants are serving real lion meat, much less from lions raised in captivity. It very well may be wild lion meat. Animal welfare groups warn that the availability of lion meat on menus can cause further peril to both lions and tigers in the wild. Butchering captive lions can be a convenient smokescreen for the illegal poaching of wild lions. For example, lion bones from Africa are being traded on the black market to China, where they are in high demand as health cures. Lion bones are being used as substitutes for tiger bones in tiger-bone soup, the “chicken soup” of Chinese medicine, and in tiger-bone wine. The good news is that there IS a way you can help stop this cruelty and abuse. The Big Cats & Public Safety Federal Protection Act was re-introduced in May in the House. This crucially important bill will effectively ban the private ownership and breeding of big cats with just a few exceptions, such as at AZA-accredited zoos and GFASaccredited wildlife sanctuaries. Once the bill passes in Congress, it will be illegal to raise lions for slaughter and human consumption as well as illegal for the public to handle big cat cubs. For more information about this bill and to urge your Federal representatives to co-sponsor the bill, visit www.BigCatBan.com.

Is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy Right For Me? AGING AND DECLINING HORMONES
A
s we age men and women alike will experience, the classic symptoms of aging. Low libido, weight gain, muscle loss, mood swings, and fatigue are just a few examples of the common symptoms of aging that most of us just accept as a fact of life. What most people don’t know is that many of these uncomfortable changes can be linked to menopause in women and andropause in men. A woman’s body stops producing estrogen (the primary female sex hormone) during menopause and a man’s testosterone levels decline on average 1-2% every year after they turn thirty (andropause). If you are experiencing one or any combinations of the symptoms below it could be due to an imbalance of hormones. SYMPTOMS OF AGING • Loss of Interest in Sex • Limited Energy • Hair Loss • Weight Gain • Mood Swings • Fatigue

BIOIDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY
T
he good news for you is that hormone imbalance and loss is a treatable condition. At Body Science Medical Group we specialize in Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) which is the process of creating a hormone regimen that is tailor made for you, with hormones that are identical to the ones generated by your body. There have been countless studies showing that synthetic (traditional) hormone replacement therapy can increase the likelihood of heart disease and cancer. With natural bioidentical hormones, you can find relief from your hormonal imbalance without the risks traditionally associated with synthetic hormones and in fact will reduce the risk of coronary artery disease, neuroconginative diseases, like dementia and Alzheimers, and reduce insulin resistance; which leads to Type Two Diabetes They will also lead to decrease in body fat and cholesterol. Bioidentical Hormones are identical to the hormones that our bodies produce naturally which allows us to metabolize them properly. Traditional synthetic hormone replacement therapies are more of a one-size-fits-all therapy to provide symptom relief. Hormone deficiencies occur at different rates in different people which is why Body Science Medical Group treats patients on an individualized basis. Here are some of the benefits of Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy BENEFITS OF BIOIDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY • Improves Energy Levels • Improves fat loss and adds to lean muscle mass • Improves Memory and Concentration • Improves Sex Drive • Protects Bones From Osteoporosis and reverses bone loss • Improves Muscle Mass and Strength • Eliminates night sweats and hot flashes • Improves Mood • Protects against Heart Disease • Protects against Neurocognative diseases like Dementia and Alzheimers • Improves immune system response

Our vision is to enhance the quality of life for our patients. We individually tailor the treatment plans of the patients that we see. By looking at each and every patient as an individual with unique needs and concerns and investing in state of the art diagnostic equipment; we are able to provide a higher level of care than other practices that are focused solely on the number of patients that they see. What Can I Expect When I come in? • Personalized treatment designed specifically for you • State of the art diagnostic testing and laboratory analysis • A comprehensive review of symptoms and medical history • Fitness Programs • Nutritional Planning • Quality compounded pharmaceutical Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy • Ongoing evaluations • To start feeling and living better Are All BHRT Practices The Same and How Do I Select the right BHRT Group For Me? BHRT and Age Management Medicine is a relatively new discipline in medicine. It is not designed to be a simple weight loss application although most people will recognize significant improvements in body composition… the loss of body fat , the addition of lean muscle mass and the improvement of bone density. When selecting a medical practice to manage your BHRT, have a good knowledge of what is being monitored, what the benefits vs. risks are, and how is your progress being monitored. Many practices only focus on a limited approach to hormone replacement such as simply prescribing Testosterone. This approach is limited and is not taking all the factors into account. All hormone levels for both men and women should be monitored and addressed such as progesterone, testosterone, estrogen, DHEA, and thyroid; along with monitoring cholesterol, complete 34
blood counts and chemistries. A thorough physical exam should be performed and specific goals with a sensible approach should be discussed. Furthermore, a baseline DEXA scan (to determine bone density) and a complete body scan (to determine accurate body composition
of lean muscle mass vs adipose tissue and its location) should be performed prior to initiating treatment. Many practices rely solely on body weight and lab values to determine successful treatment. While improvements in lab values over time are useful, they do not offer a complete picture of your overall progress. Significant benefits from BHRT are bone density improvement as well as addition of lean muscle mass and loss of adipose (fat) tissue. Some practices may utilize calipers to measure the amount of adipose tissue but it is inaccurate and user dependant and offers no information on bone density. Body Science Medical Group utilizes the in-office IDexa scanner to measure bone density as well as a complete body scan for an accurate body composition. Scans will be done at baseline and at strategic points throughout treatment. Elite Tampa Bay

Healthy Bone
Bone With Osteoporosis
Hormone Replacement Therapy & Osteoporosis O
steoporosis is a major public health threat for 44 million Americans 68% of whom are women. 10 million people already have osteoporosis today in the United States. Another 34 million have low bone mass and are at increased risk for fractures and osteoporosis. Half of women and more than a quarter of men over 50 years old will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. Bone is mostly made of collagen, which is a protein. Even though it is mostly made of protein and minerals, bone is living growing tissue. Old bone is constantly being broken down (resorption) and new bone is being added to the skeleton (formation). When more bone is broken down than is deposited bone loss is occurring. Bone growth occurs fastest during our childhood and teenage years. As a result, bones become stronger (denser), larger, and heavier. Bones continue to form until the peak bone mass (maximum solidness and strength) is reached, which occurs in most people around the age of 30. After reaching the age of 30 your bone resorption slowly begins to exceed bone formation. This leads to bone loss. Bone loss in women occurs fastest immediately after menopause, but continues into old age. A woman’s body stops producing estrogen during menopause, which is why bone loss occurs fastest during and after menopause. Estrogen is important for bone growth and strength because it works with osteoblasts (the cells responsible for forming bone). Hormone replacement therapy was initially indicated for the treatment of the symptoms of menopause, but is now approved for both the prevention and treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. The reason for this is because declining estrogen and progesterone levels do not just affect a woman’s reproductive capabilities; they also cause bone density to decrease and the risk of fractures to increase. At Body Science Medical Group we work with you to determine a prevention and treatment plan for osteoporosis. We are one of the few practices that have invested into a state of the art iDXA scanner that will not only assess your body composition; but also your bone mineral density. By using the iDXA scanner we can assess exactly what your needs are and create a comprehensive plan for your treatment.

The Importance of a Full Comprehensive Evaluation Before and During BHRT There are many reasons patients choose to receive Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy. Whether you want to lose weight, gain lean muscle mass, or prevent or reverse symptoms from osteoporosis; it is important that you truly understand exactly where your body composition is, that the information you are receiving from your physician is accurate, and what benefits you can expect to receive from the therapy. Traditional Hormone Replacement Therapy clinics rely on simple lab work and archaic body composition testing. The most common body fat test uses the skinfold caliper, a device that pinches your skin, pulling your fat away from your muscles and bones. You feel moderate discomfort, like when someone pinches your cheek. Typically the tester pinches three or four different sites on your body, such as your abdomen, arm, and back. The thickness of each pinch is plugged into a formula to determine your subcutaneous body fat level. Many things can go wrong with a caliper test. The tester may not pinch exactly the right spot, he may not pull all the fat away from the muscle 36
or he may pinch too hard and accidentally yank some of your muscle. The calipers must exert a standard pressure and measure thickness to very small levels. Tests can vary greatly from tester to tester. Also, research shows that certain formulas are more accurate for certain ethnic groups, age ranges, and fitness levels. Elite Tampa Bay
August 2013
Experts give this test a margin of error of four points, meaning your actual body fat percentage could be four points higher or lower than it actually is. Also tests show this test is accurate for about 90% of the population, when using the appropriate formulas. In laymen’s terms, if you are one of the lucky 9 out of 10, and your body fat measures 12% - it could really be anywhere from 8% to 16%. If you are the one in 10 (for example you are very lean or your body fat exceeds 30%) then all bets are off. We have seen errors run as high as 10%. In addition, skinfold calipers can only measure your subcutaneous fat. Problems With Traditional Skinfold Caliper Testing • In 90% of population, +/- 4% error rate (total margin 8%) • In 10% of population, error rates are off the scale • Overestimate leanness • Underestimate obesity • Inconsistent readings • Significant deviations in readings by the same clinician Because of the inconsistency in results, the high percentage of people that this test is not successful for, and the high margin of error, we have invested in a state of the art IDEXA scanner that will give you an exact reading on your bone density, body composition, and body mass index (BMI). We consider iDEXA to be the best body composition technique available because it is easy and comfortable for the client. You lie down on an open “table” for approximately 8 minutes while your body is scanned, it’s extremely accurate, and it measures regional (arms, trunk, and legs) as well as total body %fat, fat mass, bone mass, and lean mass as
August 2013
well as the distribution of fat. This regional, three compartment analysis is superior not only for an initial assessment, but also for tracking change. For example, with a weight training program the total increase in muscle mass and the increase in muscle mass in the arms, trunk, and legs can be determined. Every patient that comes to Body Science Medical Group will be scanned by the IDEXA scanner to find out what their exact body composition is during their initial consultation. You will also be scanned at regular intervals during your therapy to assess your improvement. There are very few anti-aging or hormone replacement therapy clinics in the entire country that have made the substantial investment of purchasing a IDEXA scanner. At Body Science Medical Group we pride ourselves on providing the highest level of personalized care for every patient that walks through our doors; which is why we have spared no expense establishing ourselves as the premiere center for Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy in the Tampa Bay area. After all, when investing in yourself, don’t you want to be assured that you are receiving the best possible treatment?

The road to success hasn’t been easy, the journey started when 5 practicing Tampa Physicians (Benedict S. Maniscalco, M.D., F.A.C.C., Alan J. Iezzi, M.D., William L. Luria, M.D., Dennis S. Agliano, M.D. F.A.C.S. and Charles E. Cernuda, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.C.C. P.) joined together to form a risk retention group to insure themselves. The Chairman of the company, Dr. Benedict S. Maniscalco, quickly brought the idea to his brother, Anthony Maniscalco, who had 17 years previous experience working with Physicians at his medical billing and Collections Company. Anthony formed a team of professionals from around the area and the company wrote its first policy. Like many companies in 2008 this group wasn’t immune to problems. Business relationships that seemed so promising quickly ended and the company that was barely a year old was reorganizing and changing its name. Anthony, the Chief Operating Officer hired an industry veteran with decades of experience in J. Dennis Watts to be the Director of Underwriting. In the summer of 2008 the company previously known as Shoreline Physicians changed its name and Lancet Indemnity was born. The company’s gross written premium has increased every year since 2008 and has become one of the largest Risk Retention Groups providing coverage in Florida. “In 2008, we wrote 10 policies, Lancet will issue more than 2,000 policies insuring more than 4,000 physicians by the end of 2013” said Anthony. “We continue to employee and hire experienced professionals that allow our company to continue on the path we are on.” In 2012, Lancet received its first Financial Stability Rating® of A, Exception, from Demotech, Inc. an organization that specializes in rating insurance carriers and Risk Retention Groups. This was the first such rating that the company had received and solidified that it is on the right path. It lead to more physicians joining the organization and more insurance professionals applying for appointments with the carrier. The company’s policies are sold through a network of independent insurance brokers from across the country. Each broker specializes in Medical Malpractice which helps to make sure that each physician knows the coverage they’re purchasing. “It is important to acknowledge our brokers because they are the ones that have helped us to grow at such a rapid pace” said Maniscalco. The main priority for Lancet is “protecting our doctor’s best interest” explained Maniscalco. “We recently took our first case to trial and were awarded a defense verdict, it was in Hernando County and we couldn’t be more proud. That is what our company was created for, protecting doctors and we will do that for every one of our policyholders.” Lancet insures all medical specialties and groups of varying sizes. The company currently writes policies in 14 states but Florida is where more that 55% of the policies are written. Lancet insures many of Tampa Bay’s physicians and hopes to continue growing in the area. Looking to the next few years, Maniscalco says the Lancet Board aims to continue steady growth of between 20 and 25% a year to a level of some $20 million in gross written premiums. The Board is committed to plowing profits into surplus to strengthen the capital base as the company grows. August 2013
