Luxury getaway on the world’s best beach What do you need in a vacation? Comfort without fuss? Warmth mixed with refreshing trade winds? Natural beauty? Excellence in service performed at a relaxed pace with a certain charm? Then make some time for the Turks & Caicos Islands, where your pulse rate is sure to slow down. Turks and Caicos is actually made up of over 40 islands and cays east south east of the Bahamas, spanning a distance of less than 100 miles from east to west and even fewer north to south. Just eight are inhabited, each reflecting distinct natural beauty, history and culture. Most visitors spend their time on Providenciales, the perfect place to unwind, but trips to the outer islands are highly recommended if you are looking to get a better impression of this small lively nation. Scheduled air flights and well organized excursions are readily available. Providenciales’ Grace Bay Beach consistently receives accolades as the world’s best beach. It was named after Grace Hutchings, an early visitor in 1892, in honor of her beauty, style and of course grace. This pristine 12 mile beach seems to have that perfect combination of fine white powder sand, expansive vistas, constant breezes and yet no crowds. The sea colors will stay with you forever; shades of Tiffany blue, turquoise, cobalt and more; and the sunsets are not to be missed. Many of the country’s most luxurious resorts are here, making for easy movement between one world class refreshment experience to another. Of course there’s nothing like becoming a ‘local’ in your own luxury resort, and one that has received the World Travel Award for the Caribbean’s Leading Boutique Hotel from 2005 to 2010 is Point Grace, Luxury Resort & Spa. The resort is appropriately named as it sits on the ‘point’ half way along Grace Bay Beach where with it’s expanse of white sand and untamed beauty you feel like you are on your own desert island. The resort’s magnificent suites, restaurants and spa are all inspired by classic turn-of-the-century British Colonial architecture creating a West Indian setting untouched by time. The islands are a divers feast with close to shore wall drops of up to 8,000 feet. Humpback whales pass by during Spring whaling season. Nature can be found in many forms from turtles to osprey eagles. Fitness lovers will find quality gyms, classes and watersports with expert tuition. Kite-boarding, triathlons, 5/10K runs, sea-swims are all pursuits to join in. Tennis, golf and horse-back riding are all catered for, again with experts on hand. Fishing from bone fishing to deep sea fishing is world class. There is plenty to do if you are looking to be active.

World class chefs seek to impress you with their signature dishes creating a cosmopolitan fare, but Caribbean and nativestyle dishes abound with the fresh catch of the day and the country’s own Conch. Dining is everything from a simple to luxurious experience. You’ll find a huge selection of wines and drinks on offer too. Point Grace’s elegant gourmet restaurant, Grace’s Cottage, has specialized in pairing fine wines with inspired cuisine for many years now. Come, take time to enjoy cuisine at it’s best, in the best possible settings. Your body and soul have already entered a new dimension, where you feel energized but utterly peaceful. The Point Grace Thalasso Spa is all you need to further the restoration process. Treatments are European in style; Thalassotherapy using the islands natural resources and Thalgo products. The setting is truly West Indian; white washed exquisite cottages just set back from the natural beach dunes with inspiring sea views and breezes. Turks and Caicos is very accessible with many international flights. It’s just over an hour from Miami and two and a half hours from New York amongst many routes. Your first vision of the islands from the plane will be awe inspiring. You’ll finally know you are on vacation. Getting through the soon to be expanded small airport terminal is fine but a discrete courteous fast track VIP Flyers service is available; Turks and Caicos will give you the luxury you desire at every step. Those that live in the islands keep their history and culture close to their hearts, but they also move with the times and going-green, ecotourism and government-reform are all hot topics. There is certainly a pride in the islands that we do things our way, we don’t just follow others, and that gives the islands a spirit all to their own. If you chose to visit Turks and Caicos you’d very likely become one of our many return visitors, so we hope to see you very soon.

W

ith the three engineering priorities “Intelligent Drive,” “Efficient Technology” and “Essence of Luxury,” the new S-Class extends the boundaries of technology on many levels. The S-Class is not just a technological spearhead for Mercedes-Benz but for automotive development as a whole. As with every generation before it, the customers expect the new S-Class to set standards across the board to retain its accolade as “the best automobile in the world.” Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of MercedesBenz Cars: “Rather than being about safety or aesthetics, power or efficiency, comfort or dynamism, our aspirations were ‘the best or nothing’ in every respect. No other car stands for the Mercedes-Benz brand promise more than the S-Class.” Perfection to the last detail results in “The Essence of Luxury.” This pursuit of the best is particularly noticeable in the interior: whether it is the seats or the air conditioning, the controls or the design, the infotainment or the comfort and safety in the rear – new ideas, their painstaking realization, and highest perceived quality underpin the high standards that the engineers have set for the Mercedes-Benz flagship model – and for themselves. The same applies to safety. What started with PRE-SAFE® 10 years ago and continued with DISTRONIC PLUS has now resulted in a new dimension of motoring: comfort and safety are merged into one. Mercedes-Benz refers to this as “Intelligent Drive.” A whole host of new systems makes the new S-Class even more comfortable and even safer.

Design: a modern sense of status and sensual shapes

People all over the world can recognize a Mercedes-Benz straight away. The hybrid bodyshell. The lightweight index – the torsional stiffness in relation to weight and vehicle size – has been improved by 50 percent compared to the predecessor model. Since the 220 model series was developed in the 1990s, with an optimally coordinated materials mix the hybrid lightweight construction has been further developed into an aluminium hybrid bodyshell. During this period the share of aluminium has increased to more than 50 percent. It has therefore been possible to maintain practically the same body weight for 20 years and even slightly reduce it, despite far more stringent comfort and safety requirements and additional functions. In addition to this, structural foams are used at specific points in node areas in the new model series. The entire outer skin of the S-Class, including the roof and the front section of the body, consists of aluminium. 12

The high percentage of aluminium is possible thanks to the use of a complete range of semi-finished products (casting, extrusion, sheet metal). The safety passenger cell is made using an extremely high percentage of high-strength steel. This lightweight design by material and geometrical optimisation coupled with highly complex joining technology allows the new S-Class to further raise the bar in the demanding luxury sedan segment – without adding weight. With a torsional stiffness of 40.5 kN/degree (predecessor: 27.5 kN/ degree), the S-Class achieves a new record in its segment.

Extended PRE-SAFE® protection: prevention is better than cure

Ten years ago, Mercedes-Benz unveiled a groundbreaking safety concept in the S-Class in the form of the PRE-SAFE® anticipatory occupant protection system, The new PRE-SAFE functions can help to prevent collisions with pedestrians and vehicles in front in city traffic, defuse dangerous situations caused by traffic behind and enhance the protection offered by the seat belts. • The PRE-SAFE® Brake can also detect pedestrians and initiate autonomous braking to avoid a collision at speeds up to 31 mph. • PRE-SAFE® PLUS can recognize an imminent rear-end collision and warn the following traffic by activating the rear hazard warning lights at a high frequency. If the danger of a collision persists, the system can also firmly apply the stationary vehicle’s brakes and thus minimize the risk of whiplash injuries by reducing the forward jolt caused by the impact. • This additionally can reduce the risk of secondary accidents. Immediately before impact, the PRE-SAFE® anticipatory occupant protection measures, especially the reversible belt tensioners, are deployed. • With PRE-SAFE® Impulse, the driver and front passenger are pulled away from the direction of impact by their seat belts at an early phase of the crash before the resulting occupant deceleration sets in. This can substantially reduce the risk and severity of injuries in a frontal collision.

Setting the standard for safety in the rear: new features in the S-Class Mercedes-Benz has extended the safety system for rear seat passengers further with the seat belt buckle extender, the beltbag and the cushionbag. The first two of these developments are included in the “Rearseat Package.” With the illuminated seat belt buckle extender, an electric motor extends and retracts the belt buckle automatically. In this way, any belt slack in the area of the pelvis and thorax can be reduced so that passengers are secured more firmly in both the sideways and the lengthways direction, which has been undergoing continuous refinement ever since. Now, the safety pioneer is increasing protection levels once again. “The sophisticated design of the S-Class has always been an expression of luxury and automotive grandeur of its era. And our new S-Class continues this tradition. With its classic architecture and flowing silhouette, it is a modern embodiment of sensual clarity. The design draws a line from the sophisticated, progressive design idiom to the classic elegance of our 1930s cars – intelligence that speaks to the emotions. Stylish sportiness and sensual forms in synthesis with timeless clarity and effortless superiority make the S-Class a true design icon,” says design chief Gorden Wagener. To underline the effortless superiority of the new S-Class, and its ambition to lead, the radiator grille is now larger, upright and distinctly three-dimensional in design. With its long hood, the flowing, domed roof line and the gently slanting rear end, the new S-Class has classic sedan proportions. The size and space have been fashioned in such a way that the S-Class appears prestigious,

14

and the powerful roof line is also in keeping with the car’s sporty coupé-style intentions. A character line descending discreetly from front to rear – the brand’s hallmark “Dropping Line” – elegantly structures the side wall and generates additional dynamism even when the car is at a standstill. The subtly created convex-concave effect of the entire flank gives rise to an extremely powerful and elongated car body that demonstrates both excitement and calm. The pronounced shoulder above the rear wheel adds further emphasis to the car’s athletic character. The positively exaggerated surfaces and lines of the side wall on the new S-Class generate excitement as they flow into the rear end. As well as being elegant, the slightly slanting form has aerodynamic advantages. Horizontal lines running from the trunk lid to the bumper emphasize the car’s width when viewed from the rear. The hallmark signature of the Mercedes-Benz designers can also be seen in the rear windscreen, which cuts into the C-pillars. The upper area of the glass is rounded, lending it a coupé-like character. The real highlights are the new-style tail lights which are completely encased by the car body and, thanks to this solitarily integrated styling and meticulously crafted inner workings, complete the design right down to the last detail.

LED technology: the first ever car without a single light bulb

100 years or so after the introduction of electric lighting in motor

vehicles, Mercedes-Benz is now making a complete switch to LED technology – the new SClass is the first vehicle in the world whose interior and exterior do without a single light bulb, and sees Mercedes-Benz building on its pioneering role in the lighting sector. The lighting’s multi-level functionality is another world first: out of consideration for any road users behind, the intensity of the brake lights is reduced at night or while waiting at traffic lights, for example. Almost 500 LEDs illuminate the road, the vehicle, the interior and the trunk. Depending on equipment, these include: • Headlamps: each with up to 56 LEDs • Tail lights: each with up to 35 LEDs (plus 4 for the rear fog lamp) • Interior (including ambient lighting): approx. 300 LEDs Visibility is enhanced by two assistance systems that have undergone some key improvements – Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and Night View Assist Plus. Thanks to a new stereo camera and multistage radar sensors, the S-Class has 360-degree all-round vision and detects potential dangers on the road better.

Suspension: the world’s first suspension with “eyes”

The new S-Class is the world’s first car to be able to detect bumps on the road ahead. If ROAD SURFACE SCAN detects

September 2013

such unevenness by means of the stereo camera, MAGIC BODY CONTROL instantaneously sets up the suspension to deal with the new situation. This innovative suspension system is available as an option for the eight-cylinder models. Standard equipment for the new S-Class includes the continuously operating Adaptive Damping System ADS PLUS and an enhanced version of the full air suspension system AIRMATIC.

Interior: visual breadth and calm solidity

With its clear architecture, the interior design of the S-Class embodies a classic, superior, cutting-edge saloon. The interior’s expressive character derives from a uniquely fluid, sensuously elegant style. Horizontal elements and lines create a setting characterized by visual breadth and calm solidity. High quality and elegance harmonize with clarity and functionality: the interior design of the SClass combines ride comfort, spaciousness and user-friendliness to the very highest standard. The perfectly coordinated use of materials and colors produces an exclusive interior seemingly cast from a single mold. There is generous use of wood trim, especially in the dashboard and center console. Metallized switch surfaces with pearl-effect paint finishes in three color shades to suit the interior color particularly highlight the outstanding quality. Passengers in the rear are also seated in first-class – the design and exclusivity of the seats, door panels and all controls are to the

Elite Tampa Bay

15

same, high standard as the front. As an additional individualization feature, there are rear seat packages available in the Special Order Program which incorporate a Business center console combining personal comfort with practical convenience (additional storage compartments, folding table, two-place seating in the rear, etc.).

Concept: the best for both worlds

For the first time in the history of the S-Class, the development focus was on the long-wheelbase Sedan. Unlike before, the shortwheelbase version was derived from this. This is because the S-Class is not only firmly positioned as a prestige sedan in the large overseas markets such as the USA, China or Japan. Whereas in Europe and North America owners of an S-Class are frequently behind the wheel themselves, the flagship model in the MercedesBenz passenger-car portfolio is very definitely a chauffeur-driven vehicle in Asia. The logical consequence is the number of new features specifically related to comfort and safety in the rear – in the S-Class, there is no doubt that passengers in the rear are also seated in first class.

Control and display concept: elegant new command center

Two high-resolution TFT color displays in 8:3 format with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches form the new information center in the S-Class. The left-hand display performs the functions of the previous instrument cluster, providing the driver with all relevant 16

information. The right-hand display allows the convenient control of infotainment and comfort functions. For the new S-Class, the constantly increasing need to integrate additional functions into the vehicle led to a further development of the entire operating logic. Here ergonomics, operating convenience and safety along with attractiveness and aesthetics were the main considerations. The aim in designing the control and display features was to group controls and display functions together in a coherent manner in terms of both design and functionality. Apart from the new displays, the metallized switch surfaces and solid aluminium controls are visual highlights of particularly high quality. Thanks to the fine structuring on the metal surfaces, each individual control has the sound, feel and attention to detail that makes a Mercedes-Benz so special. The new control features include a touch-sensitive telephone keypad and an extended favorites function with twelve freely selectable memory places. The principal control element is the rotary pushbutton, with the usual direct access keys in the center console for the most important functions and a toolbar for the driving assistance systems. Voice entry with the Enhanced Voice Control System allows complete addresses to be spoken in one go, for example (oneshot input). The telephone and audio systems can also be voice-

controlled. The option of having text messages (SMS) or emails read out is a new feature.

Climate control: a wealth of new features for a pleasant atmosphere

During the systematic further development of the entire climate control system, a particular focus was placed on the development goals of performance, air quality, precise regulation, noise level and efficiency. As a new feature, the AIRBALANCE package comprises perfume atomization, ionization and even more efficient filtration compared with the standard model. The automatic climate control in the rear has two additional zones to improve thermal comfort. Electric heating of the armrests is a completely new feature. As a world first, the new S-Class Sedan has an “active perfuming system” as part of the AIR-BALANCE package. ‘Active’ means that the perfuming system is switched on and off manually, with manual adjustment of the intensity. The perfume atomization system individualizes the smell of the vehicle interior. It neither changes the interior smell permanently, nor are perfume molecules deposited on fabric surfaces or clothing. The fragrance is discreet and mild, and dissipates rapidly.

Seats: mobile office and center of wellbeing

With numerous world firsts such as the ENERGIZING massage function based on the hot-stone principle or active seat ventilation with reversing fans, Mercedes Benz has raised seating and climatic comfort in the S-Class to a new level. The seat developers have paid particular attention to the rear seats. There is a choice of four different rear seat variants including an Executive seat with a backrest angle adjustable by up to 43.5 degrees, allowing occupants in the rear to concentrate on work or relax in comfort. These additional rear seat packages can be ordered through the Special Order Program. The ENERGIZING massage function on the hot-stone principle is a world first. The seat specialists at Mercedes-Benz have developed a unique massage function with 14 separately actuated air cushions in the backrest, as well as an integrated warming function. There is a choice of six massage programs, two of them using the warming function. The function is also available for the rear seats. For the first time, so-called reversing fans are used in the active seat ventilation system. When the ventilation function starts, cooler surrounding air is first drawn onto the seat surface. This enables the surface temperature of a heated-up seat to be reduced much faster than with the previous active cooling systems. After four minutes the fans are automatically switched to blower mode to reduce draughts. Four seat variants are available for the long-wheelbase S-Class and can ordered through the Special Order Program. The adjustment kinematics have been changed in the luxury and reclining seat variants. Unlike the conventional trailing backrest design, the backrest is adjusted separately so that the legroom and seat reference point remain unchanged. The cushion can be separately adjusted for angle and horizontal position. September 2013

Elite Tampa Bay

17

The maximum backrest angle of the Executive seat (reclining seat) behind the front passenger seat is increased from 37 to 43.5 degrees, giving it the largest backrest inclination in the luxury segment. The reclining seat features a calf support which is freely adjustable for length and angle. In combination with the heel rest on the folding chauffeur seat at the front and an additional comfort cushion, this allows a reclined position that sets new standards in the automotive sector with respect to sleeping and resting comfort. If the “First Class Rear” is selected (with rear center console), the front console on the transmission tunnel is visually continued to the rear. It is equipped with innovative thermo-cup holders which use Peltier technology to cool or warm drinks over a longer period of time. Like an aircraft seat, the centre console is available with two tables which can be easily folded in or out using one hand.

Multimedia features: mobile concert hall

A completely new multimedia generation with intuitive operation and particularly tangible functions thanks to visualization and animations celebrates its debut in the S-Class. Other innovations include the multi-user system, which allows independent access to the media sources of the entertainment system from any seat. The innovative Frontbass system developed by Mercedes-Benzand used for the first time in a sedan car is a feature common to all the audio systems: the woofers are housed in the firewall, and use the almost 40-liter space in the crossmember and side member as a resonance chamber. Conventional woofers in the doors are therefore unnecessary. The mid-range speakers in the doors are relocated upwards. This improves the soundscape and allows additional stowage space in the doors. As alternatives to the standard sound system with ten loudspeakers, two very high-quality audio systems are available which were developed together with the high-end audio specialist Burmester: the Burmester® Surround Sound systemand the Burmester® HighEnd 3D-Surround Sound system. The interactive presentation of content is a prominent new feature of the navigation function. The new navitainment functions include an animated compass, the “Driveshow” for passenger information as in an aircraft, and the display of Google Maps on the head unit and in the rear. Information on the traffic situation is shown with hatched lines (rather than with vehicle silhouettes as before). With the new Live Traffic Information service, traffic data is transmitted in real time. As a result, the navigation system is better informed about the situation on the roads.

Body: maximum stability and highquality lightweight design

A high level of crash safety, outstanding rigidity for excellent handling with extremely low levels of noise and vibration. These were the aims when developing the bodyshell for the new S-Class – a third-generation aluminum. The beltbag is an inflatable seatbelt strap that is able to reduce the risk of injury to passengers in the rear in a head-on collision by lessening the strain placed on the ribcage. The reclining seat is equipped with a cushionbag under the seat cushion upholstery as standard. When the seat is reclined, it prevents the occupant from sliding beneath the seat belt (so-called submarining) in an accident. This has enabled Mercedes-Benz to design a comfortable reclining seat which provides a higher level of accident safety than a seat with a trailing backrest. 18

Intelligent Drive: networked with all senses

Avoid accidents and mitigate their consequences – this is the integrated approach adopted by Mercedes-Benz Accident Research under the heading “Real Life Safety.” Mercedes-Benz is systematically pursuing this strategy in the SClass with numerous new assistance systems and greatly enhanced functions. Comfort and safety are enhanced at the same time. MercedesBenz calls this “Intelligent Drive.” The new functions all rely on the same sensor system, comprising a new stereo camera together with multistage radar sensors. “Intelligent assistance systems analyse complex situations and better recognise potential dangers out on the road with the aid of improved environment sensor systems,” explains Prof. Thomas Weber, Member of the Daimler Board of Management responsible for Group Research and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “Figuratively speaking, the new S-Class doesn’t just have eyes at the front, it has 360-degree all-round vision.” A key factor is the networking of all systems, which safety experts call “sensor fusion.” The aim is to ensure comprehensive protection, not just for the occupants of a Mercedes-Benz, but for all other road users, too.

Jaguar

Re-ignited

AFTER MORE THAN 50 YEARS JAGUAR CREATES A NEW SPORTS CAR THAT IS SURE TO KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF

20

Elite Tampa Bay

September 2013

B

ack in 1961, Jaguar stunned the automotive world with the E-Type sports car, which combined achingly beautiful styling with impressive power and handling. Fast-forward to the present, and the British automaker is looking to shake up things up again with the all-new F-Type roadster.

Designed as a smaller, sportier and less-expensive offering than the Jaguar XK grand tourer, the F-Type is 3.8 inches longer than Porsche’s Boxster but 0.8 inches shorter than the 911. The platform and much of the body are made of aluminum, helping to keep weight in the 3500-3700 pound range depending on model. Torsional rigidity is said to be up 10 percent over the already railroad trestle-like XKR-S high-performance convertible.

September 2013

Styled under the watch of Jaguar Design Director Ian Callum, whose previous credits include the Aston Martin DB7 and Vanquish, the F-Type features an athletic stance and an oversized front grille that leans forward slightly to convey a sense of motion even when the car is stationary. Aside from aggressive front air intakes and a set of de rigueur side

Elite Tampa Bay

21

vents, the F-Type’s sheetmetal is clean and simple, with the visual highlights being two “heartlines” that define the front fenders and the muscular rear haunches. Hidden in the rear deck is a spoiler that automatically rises at 60 mph to improve high-speed stability.

Jaguar says that the zero-to-60 mph dash takes 5.1 seconds for the standard car, 4.8 seconds for the S and 4.2 ticks for the V8 S.

Underhood Options

The F-Type is offered in three different models, each with an engine of its own. All three utilize an eight-speed automatic transmission, though a six-speed manual is expected to be added to the options list in the future. The entry-level F-Type uses a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 that produces 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque while returning 20/28 city/highway mpg. The F-Type S uses a 380 horsepower, 339 lb-ft of torque version of the standard car’s engine (good for 19/27

22

mpg), and the F-Type V8 S gets a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 that churns out 495 ponies along with 460 lb-ft of twist and carries a 16/23 mpg rating.

To help provide an auditory experience that’s appropriate to both spirited driving and relaxed cruising, the F-Type features an Active Exhaust system. Standard on the S and V8 S and optional on the base model, it features electronically controlled bypass valves in the rear section of the exhaust that open under hard acceleration, effectively providing a free-flowing straight-through arrangement. On the highway, the valves close to bring the volume down to a suitably moderate level.

Elite Tampa Bay

September 2013

F-Type S models feature a mechanical limited-slip differential, while the V8 S uses an electronic diff with a multi-plate clutch to transfer torque to whichever rear wheel has the most traction. Each of the three variants gets a unique brake setup: the “base model” employs 13.9-inch front discs and 12.8-inch rears, the S is fitted with 15-inch front discs while the V8 S boasts 15-inch front and 14.8-inch rear units. The cabin is defined by a steeply raked dashboard and a grab handle that sweeps down the center console to separate the interior into distinct driver and passenger areas (Jaguar actually refers to the car as a 1+1). A flat-bottom steering wheel, sports seats and simple controls emphasize that the F-Type is fundamentally a driver’s car, while hidden central air vents provide a bit of theater by rising up out of the dash when needed. The softop is a power-operated unit that can be raised or lowered in just 12 seconds at speeds of up to 30 mph. It features Thinsulate for improved thermal and auditory insulation.

^ hair

Dry, brittle hair? Months of sun, surf, and pool. Your locks have taken the brunt and it’s time to give them something back. As the summer winds down, it’s time to regain control of your precious hair and transform it back into sexy-shiny hair. Where do you start? Start with a demineralizing treatment, this removes unwanted chemical, heavy metal residues, and build up. Think of all the times your hair was in the pool or ocean soaking up chemicals and pollutants this summer! There are many in-salons options and treatments available or you can try using a small amount of baking soda added to your shampoo at home. Follow with a deep conditioning treatment, or nourishing hair mask to moisturize and soften your hair. Look for products containing glycerin, shea butter, and keratin protein --- apply midstrand to ends weekly. Also, try adding coconut oil to your beauty routine, a dab on the ends once or twice a week will help maintain a good balance of moisture. What’s next? Trim your ends! Removing dead and broken ends is imperative. It allows hair to grow without the splits creeping up, making it unmanageable and prone to breakage and frizz. Regular trims help hair to be more manageable, beautiful and aid proper growth. Too hot? Avoid excessive heat styling. When you must, apply a heat protector. This will seal the cuticle and add shine. Follow with your favorite styling technique and you will be well on your way to beautiful, healthy hair.

Ugly Men

egend has it many years ago there was a group of misguided young men who spent their youths indulging in acts of sin and depravity. These treacherous acts resulted in a curse that turned them into hideous, troll-like creatures. Thus, to regain their looks, they must continuously do good deeds and charitable acts. Beware; however, they do occasionally revert to their old ways! The 13 Ugly Men first appeared in the Tampa area in the 1990’s as a group of 13 Founding Members who hosted fantastic parties, and wanted to improve our community by giving back. By encouraging Tampa Bay to “Party with a Purpose”, the reputation of the original 13 grew steadily, and by the late 90’s, they were ready to take the next step. In December of 1998, The 13 Ugly Men Foundation was incorporated in the State of Florida as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. Over the subsequent years, the Foundation has raised well in excess of a million dollars for deserving charities and causes around Tampa Bay. The Foundation is an ardent supporter of charities and organizations that benefit children’s issues, women’s issues, crisis intervention, law enforcement and our military men and women. Currently comprised of thirty-one (30) members, the Foundation is led by its Board of Directors, currently numbering six, Donnie Nurnberger, Lance Ponton, Jordan Levy, Roof Douglass, Daniel Gorda, and the President Corey McLaughlin. The 13 Ugly Men are proud to operate the Foundation with a 0% administrative overhead, which means that none of the proceeds from our events are used to pay for any operational expenses incurred by the Foundation in the normal course of business. Private donations, received annual26

ly from each member, ensure that 100% of the proceeds from our events reach those in need. The 13 Ugly Men host up to five events annually. Our signature event is the White Party, held each year in the latter part of April. We also feature the Halloween Freakshow, held on the Friday preceding Halloween, and Get Roasted, held on the night before Thanksgiving. Other events are scheduled as opportunities arise, including select New Years, St Patrick’s Day and summer events. We are very pleased to announce that our organization will be launching its first new concept in over 10 years to the market in 2014. The 13 Ugly Men have been honored with numerous awards throughout the years, including the Champions for Children Award (2009), presented by Voices for Children, and the Business Partner of the Year Award (2012), presented by the Tampa Police Department. The group of men that form the 13 Ugly Men Foundation are an incredible group of very successful Tampa entrepreneurs who absolutely love their community. The basic philosophy of the group is to raise money in Tampa and to give that money back to Tampa only. There are a lot of worthy causes outside the area but we are really only concerned with our community as it has provided all of us with

wonderful opportunities and amazing lives. Every year the board will look at potentially 20-30 applications for funding. Our charity liaison Lee Mezrah will through a process of elimination narrow the field down to a handful of potential partnerships. These charities in need will then have a chance to present to the board of directors. We pay particular attention as a group to how much is needed, what the funds will be used for exactly, and overall overhead costs of the benefiting charity involved. We want our funds to have as much of an impact as possible on those that need it most. We are always looking for worthy causes that we can support and would encourage everyone to apply. As the President of the organization serving on the board in many capacities for going on five years has been one of the most rewarding achievements of my life both personally and professionally. I have had the ability to learn and grow as an individual under the guidance of many of our founding members like Dr. Ernie McDowell, Dr.Robert Churney, and Dr. Randy Feldman. I can tell you that this group of distinguished gentlemen have been an inspiration to me and should be a role model for others when it comes to their giving nature and community involvement. Of course none of this could be possible without those in Tampa Bay who have been to our events time and time again and who make it possible for us to do the work that we do for going on 24 years. We would like to personally thank each and every one of you that have supported us throughout the years. We would also like to thank all of our sponsors and especially Lending Luxury for your continued support. We would finally like to thank those charity organizations that we have partnered with for the work they are doing as well. It has been an honor to us as an organization to be a part of this amazing community we call Tampa Bay. September 2013

Modern Home Tour See the Modern Icons Transforming Tampa

T

his year’s Modern Home Tour will take place Saturday, October 19th, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The selfguided tour is fashioned to invite locals and visitors on insider’s view of Tampa’s modern home movement. More and more architects & builders are designing & building the sleek, stylish modern structures that will define our city in the decades to come.

Tampa’s renewed modern movement is helping showcase the city as one of the country’s emerging metropolitan areas. It’s a city to watch and a growing metro on the move as hinted at decades ago when local leaders pushed the moniker of “America’s Next Great City.” Some local opinion leaders argue that Tampa is ready for prime-time on the heels of last year’s Republican National Convention (RNC), having already hosted several National Football League (NFL) Super Bowls in recent decades, and now the internationally recognized Bollywood Awards are on the horizon. In a recent online post, Charles Billi, Anchor/Reporter at Tampa’s local CBS affiliate, boldly stated recently that, “’America’s Next Great City’ has arrived! The growing modern architectural movement is one of the reasons we’re seeing a boom in Tampa.” So many of our iconic structures are already modern designs, from the nation’s premier airport in Tampa International Airport (TIA) to the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), the Straz Center and even our iconic Rivergate Tower, more commonly referred to as the “Beer Can” building by local inhabitants. Even public spaces and parks like Curtis Hixon Park are a part of this modern trend. Tampa is taking a place as one of the cities to watch – a modern place to live & work with a contemporary vibe that appeals to millennial professionals who are entering the workforce of tomorrow and inhabiting our urban core. It only stands to reason that our neighborhoods would begin to reflect some of the new modern look & feel of our commercial spaces. National publications and media outlets are also beginning to recognize Tampa as a city with affordable housing, a well-trained, educated workforce, and a place where their companies positively can impact the community. Tampa is a city with a rich architectural & cultural heritage. That is September 2013

without question. Historic building and homes stretch from Ybor City to Bayshore Boulevard and beyond into Hyde Park. Modern is what’s making waves right now though in this shining city by the bay. Ballast Point is just one example of the Tampa neighborhoods that epitomize how ‘form following function’ is defining our modern home building here. Ballast Point is especially well known for its abundance of modern architecture; it’s an eclectic neighborhood that, like other modern designs, enhances the value of our community. Ballast Point residents, businesses, architects, and designers have clearly embraced the notion that the value of the area would be enhanced with more modern concepts. The neighborhood has a warm, tropical feel that demonstrates how modern architectural

design doesn’t have to be at odds with the natural beauty of our area. It’s a modern enclave at the southern tip of Tampa, and several homes there will be featured in this year’s event. The 2013 #TampaModern Home Tour will bring together an array of design enthusiasts who understand the power of pioneering thinking as it applies to architecture. This tour, as in years past, will showcase modern properties featuring exceptional designs by Tampa’s leading contemporary studios with names like, Jaju’ Design and Development, Marmarellis Fager Studio, Tagliarini Architectural Group and Richard Zingale (Urban Studio Architects). Tickets are just $20.00 online in advance and $25.00 the day of the Tampa tour. Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit scholarships via the Tampa Bay Chapter of the Association of International Architects (AIA). New Law Lets You Become an

Investor Shark (no tank required) By Shaun Rubrecht

A

s an entrepreneur I want to make my investors a pile of money and also earn a nice chunk of change for myself. There’s only one problem and it’s a big one. I can’t let the public know that I’m seeking cash in exchange for equity in my business, which means that I can’t find investors and they can’t find me. This is because of a long-standing SEC regulation affecting private companies, one that is now being overturned. If you are looking to invest in the next big thing, and get in early, you typically have to be introduced through personal connections. Sometimes you may be part of a group that brings in companies to pitch à la Shark Tank but groups like that are few and far between. For professional angel investors there are also websites such as Gust or Angel List. At the end of the day most angel investors and entrepreneurs connect through networking, a laborious task in which success comes down to simple luck and timing. While there are some exceptions, private companies generally can’t publicize that they’re seeking investors. Within a few miles of you there might be a company seeking funds with a product

By law I haven’t been able to advertise or publicly state that I’m looking for investors and if that isn’t enough of a handicap, I can only accept money from accredited investors. or service that’s right up your alley. Can you imagine that the next billion-dollar business may be walking distance from where you live or work and that you could own a piece of it? How amazing is that? On September 23, 2013 a provision of the JOBS Act will go into effect, overturning the ban on general solicitation. This means that companies can finally put equity offerings in public view, which may include their website, social media, or press articles. One thing that isn’t changing just yet is the accredited investor requirement. Even though I have people offering me money for equity all the time, I can only accept dollars from accredited investors i.e. rich people. 30

To be accredited you need to meet one of the SEC requirements such as having a net worth over $1million outside of your primary residence or your income has been $200K in the last two years or $300K with joint income. The SEC lists these qualifications at http:// www.sec.gov/answers/accred.htm. Take a look, you may already be an accredited investor and not even know it. If you’re like me, you have a healthy natural skepticism and may be wondering how incredible investment opportunities can exist in your backyard without your knowledge. Put yourself in an entrepreneur’s shoes and process the following sentence. By law I haven’t been able to advertise or publicly state that I’m looking for investors and if that isn’t enough of a handicap, I can only accept money from accredited investors. I’ve actually had to turn people down who want to buy stock in my company, people with wallets extended, simply because they aren’t rich enough by government standards. Bank loans are generally not an option for startups and thus I, like many others, am relegated to attending various functions hoping to meet the right person and plant a business card in their hand. For me the process of finding investors has been incredibly frustrating but I’m actually one of the lucky ones since my company has received local recognition and we have a product that’s built, tested, and ready to market. Even with local support and recognition I’ve met less than half-a-dozen potential investors in the past year and when you consider that some of the most recognized companies in the world had to pitch dozens or sometimes hundreds of investors before reaching a deal, half-a-dozen may as well be zero. I’ve met many entrepreneurs here in Tampa Bay that also have fantastic ideas or completed products, but simply lack connections to the check writers. After September 23rd businesses will be allowed to get public exposure for their private offerings. Here’s my advice to you if you’re thinking about putting money into early-stage companies and you read about an interesting concept. First, make sure that you meet one of the accredited investor qualifications because you

Elite Tampa Bay

September 2013

won’t be able to invest otherwise; at least not until the additional crowdfunding provisions are passed. Next, make the first move. Send the company an email or give them a call. They won’t be contacting you because they don’t know who you are. Also understand that these kinds of opportunities are generally high-risk high-reward so if your risk tolerance is low, then this may not be for you. Additionally, you can put together a group of friends and pool resources to invest in several companies with the assumption that one of them will hit it big. From an entrepreneur’s perspective I can tell you that we are out there, in large numbers, many with paradigm altering ideas that carry enormous potential for growth. We are looking for you just as you may be looking for us. In the coming months I look forward to talking about my g r o u n d b re a k i n g technology and its investment needs, for the first time, publicly. Hopefully you’ll connect with the entrepreneur around the corner and you will both make a big pile of cash. September 2013

-year old Aquilah and her family become homeless after a house fire. Eleven years later she graduates

high school in the top 10% of her class, becomes president of a youth group charged with raising money to help people in-need, and enrolls in UCF’s Criminal Justice program in pursuit of her dream to become an FBI Agent. A disabled veteran named T.S. decides it is time to make a change after a decade of homelessness. Within five short months, he is able to access support services allowing him to move into his own apartment and enrolls into college to pursue a career in Library Sciences. Willie sleeps in a vacant car and struggles with alcohol and drug dependency. The same time the following year, he has secured stable housing, attends A.A. and N.A. meetings to maintain sobriety, and is studying to become an alcohol and drug abuse counselor. What do these three stories have in common? They are all TRUE stories of HEP residents who, through the support of programs specially designed to break the cycle of homelessness, are turning their lives around and making positive and permanent change. Established in 1986, our Mission is to provide homeless and very low-income individuals and families with housing, food, clothing and support services necessary to obtain self-sufficiency and improved quality of life. Our Vision is to be the last shelter any individual, veteran or family ever has to enter. Last year, HEP served 1,689 people including 660 veterans, 63 families and 143 children. Our beautifully landscaped 8-acre campus consists of emergency, transitional and permanent-supportive housing as

We are proudly the only organization in Pinellas County offering food, clothing, shelter and supportive services to the entire homeless population*. Our unique client-centered approach works, as evidenced by our clients. In fact, over 87% of the people who receive services from HEP successfully transition to safe and secure independent housing within the community. When referring to the homeless population, this benchmark success rate is virtually unheard of. We urge you to Help People Help Themselves, as we have for over 27 years. With a Four Star Charity Navigator Rating, you can rest assured that your partnership with HEP is one you can be proud of. Tastiest

Tampa’s I

Event

t is known as the tastiest event in Tampa. Yet, The 22nd Annual Gourmet Feastival is designed to do more than tempt taste buds. Feastival-goers will have ample opportunity on Thursday, September 26, to sample culinary fare at the Tampa Hilton Downtown offered by some of the area’s finest eateries and beverage purveyors. The Gourmet Feastival has become one of the signature events in Hillsborough County because of its uniqueness and because it is the major fundraiser for one of Tampa Bay’s most highly regarded nonprofit organizations: The Centre for Women.

Founded in 1977, The Centre for Women is a comprehensive resource centre for women in Hillsborough County to help women and their families to succeed both personally and professionally. What makes The Centre different from other organizations is its holistic approach. The Centre’s dedicated staff provides programs and services that help more than 3,000 people each year to achieve their potential and live better lives. The agency’s diverse array of programs includes: success strategies for economic empowerment, leadership and skills training, entrepreneurial and employment strategies, individual and family counseling, substance abuse treatment as well as gender-specific programs for girls and emergency services for low-income senior citizens. The Centre for Women operates four different sites. Its main offices are housed in an elegant historic building at 305 S. Hyde Park in Tampa. The beautiful building, which is listed on the National Historic Register, is emblematic of what the iconic founder Helen Gordon Davis had envisioned: a warm, welcoming environment where women can find hope, knowledge and peace of mind. It is a place where women find support and inspiration from their peers. They learn from the experiences of others. They engage in meaningful conversations. And, they discover the best of 40

what life has to offer. Whether they come to learn new skills, to network, to be part of a community of caring individuals or to seek the counsel of others, they find what they are looking for at The Centre for Women. The work of The Centre is reflected through its values: Respect, Integrity, Compassion, Excellence, and Diversity. Through the years, The Centre for Women has evolved to meet the changing needs of the community. This year, The Centre launched an innovative arts and literacy program at The Centre for Girls on E. Sligh Ave. The program geared for girls, age 5 through 14, teaches life skills and provides healing arts for homeless children and others who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience arts education. The Centre for Women is a place both rooted in tradition and constantly innovating to meet the ever-evolving needs of women in the community. Individuals, businesses and corporations make the work possible through grants, sponsorships, private donations, Centre membership (with all its benefits) and, of course, by supporting The Gourmet Feastival. Don’t Shop,

Just Adopt!

Florida English Bulldog Rescue may have your next best friend T

here is no need to go to a pet store when the urge to add to your family strikes. We have many shelters and rescues full of thousands of dogs in need of loving, caring homes in Florida in part due to pet over population. Choosing a rescue dog over a purchased pup will not solve the pet overpopulation problem (only responsible pet owners and breeders can do that), but it does give many of them a chance they otherwise would not have. But, beyond doing a “good deed”, adopting a rescue dog can be the best decision and addition to the family you ever made. Rescue a dog and get a devoted friend for life. I can promise you this, a rescue dog will make you a better person. Many people do not realize that a rescue dog need not be a “Heinz 57” mix. Purebred dogs often leave those pet stores and enter rescue almost immediately for a wide variety of reasons. It is not uncommon for Rescue to get purebred dogs that have either outlived their usefulness or their novelty with impulsive owners who considered their dog a possession rather than a friend or member of the family, or simply did not really consider the time, effort and expense needed to be a dog owner. A local purebred rescue Florida English Bulldog Rescue (FEBR) was formed in 2007 by Jennifer and Jay Corman. They realized that due to the popularity of the breed, more and more bulldogs were being dumped and abandoned. Bulldogs are listed as one of the top five most popular breeds and they are hard to resist with their smooshed face and wrinkles. But owners are not doing their research on just how high maintenance they are. They soon find themselves in over their head and not able to properly care for their bulldogs and then the bulldogs in up in shelters or much worse as strays. FEBR is a volunteer group whose mission is to rehab and re-home neglected, abused and unwanted English Bulldogs throughout the state of Florida. They also provide a safe alternative to shelters for owners that are faced with the decision to find a new home for their bulldog. This is a volunteer group with no paid staff that relies solely on donations to finance veterinary exams, inoculations, medications and surgeries -- as well as the

September 2013

daily feeding and care that our rescued dogs need while in their care. To know a bulldog is to love a bulldog but English Bulldogs do have a laundry list of potential health issues that are impacted by neglect. It can cost thousands of dollars to prepare a rescue to re-enter a family home and FEBR often has many dogs that need the high end services all at once. Medical bills can reach staggering totals but the volunteers at FEBR believe that the Snore of a Bulldog is PRICELESS! Even if you aren’t ready to adopt a Bulldog or if you are not sure the breed is right for you, there are still plenty of things you can do: • B ecome a foster family. The more homes available, the more dogs can be saved. • U nderstand the breed. If the Bulldog is not for you, find a breed that is. • L end your time to a local rescue. You could help with paperwork, phone calls, reference checks, home visits, transportation, etc. • L end your skills to a local rescue. Organize a bake sale, help write a grant proposal. • D onate or raise money. Medical care does not come cheap and money is one of the things every rescue group can use more of. • O pt for adoption. By saving a dog from rescue, you can also save another by creating another space at rescue. • G et the word out. Educate your friends and family about Bulldogs for adoption. • S pay and neuter your pets. Encourage everyone to do the same. These gentle, wrinkly, tubs of love known as the English Bulldog exists purely for one reason - to keep their family happy. Won’t you help Florida English Bulldog Rescue assure all the bulldogs in Florida have a family to keep happy. Keep in touch with Florida English Bulldog Rescue on FaceBook and visit their website WWW.FloridaEnglishBuldlogResuce.Com to find out more about adopting and helping.
