ER EDIT TT

With just a few weeks of this semester left to go, Cooglife is putting out its final issue of the 2018-2019 school year. And with that, my time as editor of this publication has finally come to an end. I joined Cooglife as a staff writer back during my freshman year, and at the time, Cooglife had only been published one year prior. But boy does time fly! With the end of this issue, Cooglife will be entering its fifth year and volume. Last year was my first year as Cooglife editor, and I had my hesitations about coming back after things didn’t exactly go the way I planned and we didn’t put out the quality of content I had envisioned us to when I initially applied for this position. But ultimately, not achieving the goals I put out and “failing” my first year made me want to come back this year, and I’m so glad that I did! I’m leaving this magazine behind as a much more realized and defined publication than it was when I first came in, which makes me really excited to see where future editors take this publication with the new foundation I’ve set.

This issue is our Coogs Choose issue, which has a special place in my heart, as it was the first issue I was able to take over during my time as Cooglife Assistant Editor. This entire issue is based off a poll that you guys voted in starting back in January, so it’s been several months in the making. Think of it as your guide to navigating all of the best that Houston has to offer. Whether you’re looking for the best place to get drinks on a Friday night, or the best student organizations to join next semester, see what your fellow students chose as their top picks. If this issue fills you with the much needed inspiration to join our staff, fill out an application through GetInvolved on Access UH, and you can write for us next semester, or even during the summer. I hope you guys enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed making it, and I wish this magazine the best for the following years to come. See you later Cooglife!☺

the University of Houston, I’ve been a part of Cub Camp as a camper, counselor and co-chair, the Student Program Board as the 2017 Comedy & Speakers

Chair, the Homecoming Board as the 2016 Director of Social Media & Assessment, 2017 Vice Chair, 2018 Chair and the Metropolitan Volunteer Program

as the 2018 Assistant Director of Membership! CL: When/why did you decide to get involved on campus? MC: Initially, it wasn’t in the plan to get involved given I wasn’t entirely sure of what I was capable of. Prior to my freshman year, I had the opportunity to attend Cub Camp in its inaugural year and fell in love with what it stood for and did for students, (and decided to) become a counselor. Through Cub Camp, I met students who not only held the same passions as me, but also wanted to make an impact. From there, I was introduced into the Homecoming Board and the Student Program Board, and I worked my way up to every position I’ve held. CL: What is your favorite part of being a student leader?

MC: The people. The students, staff, faculty and alumni I’ve gotten the chance to interact with really made the biggest impact. When things got hard, I always had a support system that held me up. I’ve also met some of my best friends through my involvement and I’ve learned so many things I wouldn’t have learned elsewhere. CL: Why do you think it’s important to get involved on campus? MC: Getting involved on campus is important because it’s our responsibility as students to know how and why things happen. There have been so many cases where students don’t understand certain processes and direct their anger toward the entities that aren’t responsible. By getting involved, not only are you giving yourself access to (knowledge on) how things happen, but you’re giving yourself a platform

and a voice to make the changes you want. CL: What advice would you give to other students hoping to get involved on campus? MC: Don’t limit yourself to your comfort zone and don’t be afraid to step out! Sometimes it can be hard, but it can be even more rewarding. Getting involved gave me the opportunity to find lifelong friends and meet people that made such an impact on my life. I’ve learned so many skills and lessons from being involved and you can too. It doesn’t have to be with something as big as Homecoming or MVP, just something you’re passionate about. And if you don't know what you’re passionate about yet, volunteer with an organization, get a feel for it and go from there! You won’t know what you’re capable of until you try!

Navigating Cactus Music — tips from a former employee Writing by Russel Gardin | Photo by Tyler Scott | Layout by Julie Araica The time has come. You are ready to advance your love of music and take the next step — starting a record collection. There are, quite literally, a lot of vinyl records out there. Your favorite band probably has something out on wax. Cactus Music and Records is a store that might have one of their albums, too. 18

COOGLIFE // APRIL 2019

As a former employee of the store, I present a guide to visiting the historic Houston music store, and more exorbitantly, beginning a new hobby. Maybe you were gifted the Arctic Monkeys’ “AM” or Lorde’s “Pure Heroine” a few holidays ago. Or maybe you were even given the gift of a turntable, the holy machine that makes listening to this all possible. Perhaps you have none of that.

If so, record stores will soon be your best friend — or maybe your bank account’s kryptonite. Cactus Music is one of the numerous record stores here in town, though they are one of the oldest and arguably the most well known. With their location at 10 Portsmouth Street, Cactus Music is situated on the cusp of Montrose, while conveniently located right next to U.S. Route

59. The company began over 30 years ago, but this location has been their home for well over 10 years. Walking in, you are immediately faced with a wall advertising upcoming in-store performances (more on that later), new releases and stuff happening elsewhere around town. They are very supportive of the city. Next, you walk into the part of the store that houses CDs and the stage. There are a lot of CDs to say the least. For many, this is the preferred method of consuming music, and that is understandable. The medium is small and portable; you can shelve them nicely or toss them in the back of your car. You can leave that copy of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumors” in your car’s stereo for years, and occasionally remember it’s there. The stage is centered along the back of the wall and has been the set-

ting of many notable shows, lectures and meet-and-greets. Everyone from Julian Casablancas to Charli XCX has hosted an event there. The music is usually free too! As for signings, simply purchase a copy of the artist’s work and you will receive a wristband that ensures you get an autograph. Also, if you are of legal age, free St. Arnold’s beer is provided during most live shows. Ok, now you go to the best part — the record room. You enter in and begin to peruse the many new titles Cactus carries. You find that new Kacey Musgraves album, pick it up, and head over to the used selection. This was my favorite part, to be honest. Every day, new “used” inventory is placed in and up for grabs. I am a fan of post-punk and new wave 12” singles, and I have found so many

just by looking through these crates. Techno, rap, country, yacht rock — it’s all there! I recommend carving out an hour or so to get a good feel in. You stay long enough until you catch the record bug and decide that vinyl is you. Then you make your way back to the register to check out (and say Russel sent you) before heading out. But it doesn’t end there — you start coming back more and more and embracing the truly unique store that Houston is fortunate enough to have. Cactus Music is a community-driven store with kind, truly knowledgeable employees who will be more than happy to help find what you are looking for. Who knows, a visit here may just turn you on to your next favorite band.

An inside look at Coog Radio, your pick for best radio station 2nd place: News 88.7 3rd place: The Spot 95.7

Writing, photos, layout by Julie Araica In the late hours of the night, when most of the Center for Student Media has finished working for the day and the office is ominously empty, chances are that you’ll probably still see/hear traces of Coog Radio, UH’s only student-run radio station, and this year’s Coogs Choose winner for best radio station. If you were to walk into the station, the first thing you’d see are the posters. There are posters everywhere in this small space, all collected over the years from various venues and album releases, curated into this small space. The main room holds a desk with a computer and some chairs. The desk belongs to the station director, but is used by various members of the organization when needed. Along the shelf of the desk you will see cartoonish drawings done of various different faces you can expect to see hanging around the station on a day-to-day basis. The chairs surrounding the desk are for people to sit at. Sometimes used by other board 20 COOGLIFE

members to sit at during board meetings, but most the time used by people to sit at during the heated music debates that occur here on an almost daily basis. This room is the place to hang for the most part. To you right you will find the audio recording room where radio show hosts sit down to record live on air, streaming directly to Coog Radio’s website. Some shows air late at night, past 10 p.m., and sometimes the hosts of these shows sit alone in this room to go live while the rest of the space around them is emptied of students. To your left you will find a room that most students use to practice or mix music. Late at night you can hear bands jamming out together, the sounds of their instruments a background noise throughout the rest of the office space.
