With three bookstores on and around USC’s campus, deciding where to shop for textbooks and school necessities can come as a struggle. However, Addam’s University Bookstore never fails to impress students with its sales, deals and affordability. Located in a convenient location across the street from the Aspyre apartment complex, the bookstore’s slogan is “Serving the University of South Carolina,” and, if you ask USC students, that’s exactly what Addam’s has done. Addam’s offers a variety of purchasable items for University students, including books, apparel and accessories, gifts and collectables and dorm supplies. With such a vast array of
Heidi Stone / THE DAILY GAMECOCK
products, students are able to find what they are looking for in a timely and efficient manner. When asked about the best thing about the bookstore, store manager Ken Halstead had a hard time picking one trait that made them the best bookstore around USC’s campus. “Just one?” he asked with a laugh. “I would

have to say the selection of merchandise available to the customer and the availability of our associates to answer customer’s questions to makes sure they select the correct item.” Addam’s won the superlative for Best Campus Bookstore last year, as well, something Halstead said he was quite proud of.
Prof. Daniel Freeman was surprised to say the least when he found out he was named the Best of Carolina. “It was interesting,” he said, laughing. He wasn’t sure entirely what it meant, but after a brief explanation he was excited. Freeman works in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry as the Director of Freshman Chemistry Labs. He graduated from USC in 1995, and in 2010, he received the College of Arts and Science Teaching Award for Non-Tenure Track Instructional Faculty. Freeman said he thinks he’s an easy guy to get along with, which makes him stand out from the crowd.
“I think I come across as a professor that really enjoys what I do,” Freeman said. “I try to teach students like adults. I try to talk to students on the same level and I really try not to talk down to them.” He was hesitant to say that he was the best professor around USC, especially since he feels so privileged to be doing what he does, but the overall praise he gets from some of his previous students speaks to his win. According to Freeman’s Rate My Professors profile, students avidly recommend him. He was a 4.2 quality rating out of 5. Students felt he was “very enthusiastic about teaching” and always makes an effort to make lectures entertaining and found him to be both hilarious and interesting.

@KYLIE_TOKES
On-campus eateries aren’t typically known for their customer service and food quality, but that’s what sets USC’s Colloquium Café apart. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the USC campus, this small, bistro-style restaurant is usually pretty busy at lunchtime and for good reason. They offer a wide variety of healthy and inexpensive soups and sandwiches that many students find to be better than the average
Russell House meal. Not to mention, this comfy café has booths and tables so you can study in peace while you munch. “We have a nice, clean, friendly atmosphere, great food and we’re competitive with our surrounding restaurants,” said Dante Jefferson, the evening supervisor at Colloquium. “We’re not perfect, but we do try our best to keep it up.” Not to be forgotten is the Colloquium’s coffee counter. Believe it or not, the Russell House bookstore isn’t the only place on campus that serves Starbucks. One of the most popular aspects of this joint is its pairing of great food with renowned coffee drinks. So, instead of eating Easy Mac in your dorm again, consider a

Humanities Building.

Dr. Dan Freeman The College of Arts and Sciences proudly congratulates Dr. Dan Freeman on being named this year’s Daily Gamecock ‘Best Professor at the University of South Carolina’. Once again, Kappa Kappa Gamma has been voted USC’s best. A key is the symbol of Kappa Kappa Gamma’s principle of exploring sciences, literature and art. The fleur-de-lis, a symbol of the iris, will often be seen in Kappa Kappa Gamma decor as a representation of the flower’s dignity and grace. The sorority was founded on the university’s campus in 1967 and has become one of the biggest chapters in the world. The chapter supports two philanthropies. Their national

The Supplemental Instruction Program, better known as SI, is USC students’ favorite. SI has organized study sessions for select classes that are lead by trained undergraduate students. The SI leaders attend the classes that they teach for and encourage other students to practice and discuss course material in their sessions. The sessions provide detailed instruction to students, including the review of lecture notes, textbook readings and other course materials. “During sessions, SI Leaders help students merge what to learn with how to learn it, and this integration creates an active learning environment outside of the classroom,” according to Rachel Brunson, coordinator of supplemental instruction. Brunson said SI is successful because it targets courses rather than students. It provides support from the very first day of class and incorporates different learning styles to students

Most people don’t want to live in a residence hall built in 1967. But after it was renovated in 2010, Patterson stands as a nine-floor residence hall that houses 544 students. After its renovation, Patterson reopened in 2011 as a suite-style residence hall. But boys have to miss out on living in this fantastic space — Patterson is an all women’s residence
hall. But for the lucky ladies, Patterson residents have access to nearly brand-new amenities and the common areas throughout the floors. Each floor has a kitchen complete with new furnishings, and there are several common spaces throughout the building with comfy chairs, couches and tables where residents can work. And on the first floor, there’s a cyber lounge for residents. Patterson is staffed by a live-in resident life coordinator, a live-in assistant resident life coordinator and 16 resident mentors.

Getting featured in Southern Living Magazine is no small feat. Neither is serving locally-sourced ingredients at low prices. And yet, Cafe Strudel turns out the best breakfast in Columbia day after day. “We work really, really hard to send out every plate of food as
good as the last,” said owner Trip Turbyfill who, with the help of his wife Marila, has been curing hangovers for over a decade. Strudel’s Hangover Hashbrowns and endless coffee bar make for a great breakfast, whether it’s Sensitive Sunday or not. More than being a place to get great food, Cafe Strudel is just a pleasant place to be. Between the rotating artists in residence, to the mismatched and comfy decor, to the hand-written specials board, they’re the coziest place in West Columbia. “We really enjoy what we do, and we we think that shows through,” Turbyfill said. It’s clear that someone is having a lot of fun. How many other
Einstein Bros. Bagels
restaurants can you think of that serve a “Manmosa”? (That’s Blue Moon in a mimosa.) Yeah, there are none. You can watch your orange juice get fresh-squeezed table side from a contraption that looks like it came out of Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium. Their cinnamon pancakes are as big as your face. The Sunrise Burrito makes you want to hug a stranger. “We appreciate the students who come in,” said Turbyfill. “They make us feel young.” Clearly someone is young at heart — and ready for you to come eat breakfast.

@BELVINOLASOV
Bagels have a long and distinguished history of being great meals for people on-the-go. Look at New York City, one of the most mobile and fast-paced cities in the world – it’s bagel city. Einstein Bros. may be new to the bagel scene – it was only formed in 1995, when Boston Chicken Inc. created what would become Einstein and Noah Bagel Corporation to buy up bagel shops in unconventional markets and revamp them towards success – but they serve them like old hats. They offer the classic bagel with shmear (essentially cream cheese), but they don’t rest on their laurels, either. They serve up Jewish classic nova lox along with
Sarah Stone / THE DAILY GAMECOCK
their daring asparagus, mushroom and egg white sandwich. That’s in addition to their paninis, soups and salads, which don’t have a bagel in sight. Einstein’s employee Lenora Nixon stressed the importance of the freshness that comes from
making everything to order, but had her own special ingredient in mind for making Einstein’s Bagels great: “I would say friendly, fast service.”

And when it comes to what makes them the best, Groucho’s President Bruce Miller said it’s a little bit of everything. “It’s our hot, melted trademark subs, plus our chips with our (Formula) 45 sauce mixed together with the little bacon bits,” Miller said. “Especially after a hard night out, it’s really satisfying.” The soft bread overflows with meat on every sandwich, the cheese cascades down whatever combination of
Tsunami Lois Carlisle
@LOISCARLISLE
People who aren’t into sushi have been known to order off the sushi menu at Tsunami. It has something to do with the freshness of everything that goes into the roll. Tsunami is so confident in the product that it serves, they invite you to sit at the sushi bar to watch chefs turn tender fillets of tuna into sashimi and the Dynamite roll, flaky crab into the G.M.C. and Rainbow roll, smoked salmon into the Philly and the Crunchy Wasabi. The knives are so sharp and the veggies so fresh, you can’t hear the blade as it slices cucumbers into spears. The wasabi is so intense that you can hardly taste anything but the clean burn. On any given night, the front of the house is packed with customers. People
turkey, ham or roast beef you order and the chips’ crunch ties it all together. The drinks are always flowing — it’s rare that you’ll be running low for long after you polish off your sweet tea. And you can always count on a bag of signature Groucho’s chips and a pickle on the side. It’s steps away from campus, and, as of last year, they’re open until 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. No longer do you need to wait until you have a free morning to grab your STP or that Apollo Dipper you’ve been craving all week.

The rolls range between $4-$11, with specialty rolls and catch-of-the-day prices $1 or $2 higher. These are served as eight pieces. Sushi and sashimi meals range from $26.50 – $28.50 and come with 10 or 15 pieces apiece. The spicy mayo and crab salad alone make Tsunami in the Vista worth the trip. With over thirty rolls on the menu, everyone at your table will be happy.

Just a block away from the Horseshoe and right across the street from the Statehouse, Hibachi House has made itself a go-to place for hungry students looking for a lot of food for a low price. The portions are massive — order a hibachi plate, and you won’t just get a few cubes of meat. You’ll get a generous helping of the protein of your choice over two piles of steaming rice and hibachi carrots, zucchini and mushrooms. Oh, and before that you’ll get a salad to start with. the taste is anything below par. Call it in for pick-up, and you’re 15 minutes away from all of that to go. Your order will be right there on the counter, waiting for you in a Styrofoam box wrapped in a plastic bag. The sushi menu is extensive, and you’d be hard-pressed to run out of soy sauce by the end of your meal. For less than $10, hungry lunch-goers can find themselves forking through heaps of food prepared to their liking. It’s close enough for lunch between classes and far enough that it’s not like eating at Russell House every day. The turn-around time between placing your order and picking up your food is quick. Put simply, Hibachi House is the satisfaction you want on the budget you have.
Cantina 76 is a locally owned taqueria and bar, known for their unconventional tacos. Manager David
Keller can vouch for it. “You’re going to have taste and flavors that you would never expect on a taco, but they turn out to be the best thing you ever tasted,” Keller said. Cantina 76 has a wide range of tacos, but Keller named their chicken teriyaki taco and barbecue quesadillas as standout menu items. “The flavors and the way our chef puts it together is incredible,” Keller said. “I think it’s the best quesadilla in town.” And Cantina 76 isn’t just another Taco Bell- Americanized joint — it strives for authenticity with its tacos by putting them together with real food, not processed meats. “We use the freshest ingredients and we use locally grown and ordered food,” Keller said. And then there’s the happy hour. Cantina 76 doesn’t stop with just one hour — they give you three. “We have the best margaritas in town, you can ask anybody,” Keller sai. “The different flavors and varieties of our margaritas is what I think really does it.”

Here’s how to tell if it’s good barbecue: it’s served to you by a cashier who has an accent as thick as banana pudding who calls you “son” or “darlin’” and always asks if you want sweet tea with that.
Oh, and it’s pulled pork. That’s what’s most important. Palmetto Pig is the definition of a family-owned and operated, top-quality restaurant. Not only will the owner, Gene Antley (or, Mr. Gene as he’s called), quality check the meat every morning, but he encourages all other members of the staff to get involved in the process as well. In fact, the manager was busy making mac and cheese and was unable to give a comment. Here’s what it boils down to: If you’re from around here, pick up the plate you’ve grown up with. If you’re from out of state, go get a taste of what South Carolina is made of. Plus, when students show their CarolinaCard they get a dollar off the buffet. What more do you need?
Best Burger & Best Overall Restaurant
Lois Carlisle
@LOISCARLISLE
Between the burgers, the bar and that tasty chipotle mayo, it’s easy to understand why Pawleys Front Porch takes home both the best overall restaurant and best burger titles this year. Manager William Bolchoz wore the title with pride. “It’s great, especially coming from The Daily Gamecock because we get a lot of support from students and their parents, traveling fans,” he said. “Nowadays, competition in Columbia is growing. It’s a big deal to us to be given this award.” Their menu is all-encompassing and yet distinctly local, evoking images of Beaufort and Sullivan’s in the lowcountry with pimento cheese, pineapple and fried pickle chips. All of their chuck is ground in-house daily and their sauces are never from a jar. The seafood tastes like it was swimming this morning, or better yet, like it never swam at all, just appeared like magic in the kitchen. Their specials are a huge draw both during lunch and dinner hours. Happy Hour lasts from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. every day, on Tuesdays, get half-off entrees from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and on Wednesdays, tacos and crab dip are $5 all day. Plus, Pawleys

See, already romantic.) “We love being so close to campus,” said manager Julie Raines. “We get to see [students] walking all the time, and we love seeing [them] all come in.” They really do love to see you walk through the door. You won’t find a more accommodating waitstaff to make your night perfect. “I think [couples like it] because

Nonnah’s
Best Dessert
Sarah Stone / THE DAILY GAMECOCK
Lois Carlisle
@LOISCARLISLE
For six straight years, Nonnah’s has been serving up the best dessert in Columbia, according to students. Actually, they’ve been voted best dessert in the city more than 10 times.
Located in The Vista, Nonnah’s makes for a great stopping-off point as an evening on the town comes to a close. They offer over 10 different types of cakes, all made in-house daily, and all guaranteed to be bigger than your
face. (How does Chocolate Temptation sound? Californian Almond Cake? Chocolate Raspberry Fantasy? Try not to drool on the page.) Their cheesecakes are out of this world, and the apple pie tastes like Granny Smith herself baked it full of love. But it wasn’t old Granny S — it was owner Maggie Groff. Groff moved Nonnah’s to a larger location early last year in order to accommodate all of the cake-craving Carolinians who pass through her doors every night. The waitstaff is friendly and always willing to settle the debate you’re having with yourself over what to order. (“Well, if you don’t want to order both ...”) The atmosphere is perfect for a night out with your significant other, or just your girlfriends.

Though South Carolina — Columbia, in particular — has boomed with new breweries over the past five years, River Rat Brewery takes home the prize for Columbia’s best. Founded in 2013, River Rat has overflowed with business since the doors opened. They were chosen to create the trademark World Beer Festival beer
this year, aptly named “Beer Fest Beer II” and are a stop on the Columbia Brew Bus brewery tours every weekend. River Rat’s team is made up of three founding members, Mike Tourville, Drew Walker and Tyler Pawelkop. The three men have set out to create the perfect beer after a long day at work, and the brewery does provide a perfect set of relaxation and oldfashioned fun.
It’s a wonderful place to duck out of the cold and into a hot cappuccino. (On the flip side, it’s a great place to cool down with a cake, a la mode.) Nonnah’s also serves dinner entrees. But be careful that you don’t eat too much — you’ll want to save room for dessert.

Best Brewery With a large backyard and sprawling porch featuring cornhole and a different food truck every week, families can bring their kids to the yard, as well as their dogs, while they sample one of River Rat’s five permanent beers or whichever seasonal beer they have on draught. If you’re new to the brewery scene and are dying to try out all the beers, ask for a flight for $7; you’ll get to sample each beer and see what the hype is really about. And don’t count them out when football season starts up again either; their location is close to the stadium, and River Rat sells tailgate spots and they go fast, so reserve yours while you can. Located across from the Horseshoe in the heart of campus, Cool Beans has become students’ go-to spot to grab coffee. With an extensive menu, Cool Beans is just as appealing as their location. Their business hours are from 7 a.m. to midnight, students can drop by for a cup of coffee before class or to study after dinner. “I think we’re one of the most inviting coffee shops,” said Ally Smetana, Cool Beans’ assistant manager. “Cool Beans is very personal — the coffee shop is literally in a house. Wednesday nights in Columbia can be dull, but Village Idiot is here to spice things up with their weekly trivia night tradition. For years now, Village Idiot has hosted Trivia Night, along with various beer specials, every Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. and it’s become a crowd favorite. Customers are encouraged to make a team and test their knowledge together, as well as enjoy some
pizza. “It’s probably one of the best original pizzas in Columbia,” said Eric Isley, manager of Village Idiot. The categories range from Sports to Geography and more. Trivia nights also have a tradition where the last round is always movie-related questions — a film will be described from IMDB or a trailer will be screened for the teams and they have to wrap up the competition by guessing which movie it is. “If we didn’t have trivia on Wednesdays, it would probably be a pretty slow night,” Isley said. “It seems like everyone comes here for trivia and then moves onto Jake’s for pint night.”

@KYLIE_TOKES
As a family business that has blossomed into an inspired chain of stores, HandPicked is the obvious choice for Columbia’s best jewelry store. Established in 1986, the shop is full of expressive handmade accessories. The HandPicked website explains that the original inspiration for the store was Mexican jewelry.
Best Jewelry Store The founder Melanie Mauldin said she “befriended local artisan families buying colorful crafts and handmade sterling silver jewelry.” Now, the store works on designing pieces with help from small craft groups from all over the world. Their pieces include necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings, all of which can be personalized with monograms.
Something unique about HandPicked’s selection is their stone jewelry, one-of-a-kind and finely crafted. “Our original collections are carefully chosen, and we think you can wear them any way,” reads their website. “Whether playing up bohemian flair or adding color to a classic ensemble, stones get the job done.” Handpicked offers personalized pieces of jewelry for yourself or an

On Jan. 15 at the historic Seibels House, Ed Madden was officially announced as the city’s first poet laureate for the city of Columbia. Madden is an associate professor of English and the director of the Women’s and Gender Studies Program at USC. “I am excited to have been chosen for this position and really honored to be the fi rst poet selected,” Madden said in an interview with Free Times. “Columbia is a city so rich in writers. I’m also very humbled.” Prior to ser ving as Columbia’s Cit y Poet Laureate, Madden was the writer in residence at the Riverbanks Zoo’s Botanical Garden where he encouraged members of the community to engage in the writing of poetry and exploration of literary arts. He has also written three books of poetry, with a fourth, “Ark,” due out in 2016. “I anticipate learning the city,” Madden said in an interview with USC. “One of the things I want to do is to get to know the stories of the city, historical and contemporary. I feel like my job is not just to promote the arts but to document this city at this moment.” This new-to-Columbia position was created in Oct. 2014 by the cit y and the nonprof it organizat ion, One Columbia for A rts and History. “There are measurable ways to gauge the ef fec t iveness of t he posit ion: How ma ny workshops did you set up? The Office of Leadership and Service Center is celebrating the life of Martin Luther King Jr. through the MLK Jr. Days of Service and event series. The university has been holding the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service since 1996, allowing students to make more out of their days off from classes. The MLK Jr. Day of Service on Monday was completely filled, but students have another opportunity to serve this Saturday. A c c ord i n g t o Lu i s Sie r r a , leadership coach in the Leadership and Ser vice Center, the MLK Jr. Days of Service are especially important as students reflect on
How many young writers did you help get into print?” he said in a USC interview. “But there are also less tangible measures, like how strong a sense of literary community we build and how the literary arts contribute to the life and livelihood of the city.” As the poet laureate, Madden will have a $2,000 annual budget to work with throughout the year in order to promote and strengthen the fine arts community within local schools, libraries and writing groups. Madden hopes that his poetry and opportunity as poet laureate will reach deeper than just poetry and offer a unique perspective on life experiences. “If poetry can be one of the ways we explore what’s deeply human about us, it would be really nice to create a forum for exploring ways in which words can also be part of the healing process,” Madden said in his USC interview. Madden’s first readings as official City Poet Laureate will be on Jan. 20 at the State of the City Address and Feb. 17 at the commemoration events for the 150th anniversary of the burning of Columbia, but he hopes his appointment as poet laureate will be more than just poetry readings and work-hops. Madden hopes that his poetry will offer a unique perspective on life experiences. “I’m poet laureate, my focus is poetry, but I think my charge is to promote the literary arts in general,” Madden said, in his interview with USC. “I want a community where we not only know each other but support each other and are willing to critique each other. There’s a point in building a community where you move past the rah-rah promotion of the arts to serious reflection on the quality of the arts. In the literary community, we still need to do both, I think.” Madden will serve the city of Columbia for a four-year term beginning this year.

Like many students, fourth-year public relations student Molly Rigatti fi nished last semester by completing a project. Unlike most students, her project was a concert at The Cotton Gin in Five Points that benefited charity. Rigatti was a student in professor Lisa Sisk’s Journalism 531: Public Relations Campaigns class last semester. This course required the students to create and execute a public relations campaign for an organization as the semester-long Capstone project. Rigatti and classmate Casey Pigott chose to do theirs for USC Dance Marathon. “I have served USCDM as a public relations coordinator for the past two years and have truly fallen in love with the organization and what it does,” Rigatti said about choosing USC Dance Marathon. USC Dance Marathon started as a single event in 1999 to raise money for the Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital. The main event, featuring dancing, games and other entertainment, has continued every year since. It has also become USC’s largest student-run philanthropy, raising money for Palmetto Health in additional ways throughout the year. “Because USCDM launched its ‘Half a Million in Half the Time’ campaign in September, we decided to couple community engagement and fundraising,” Rigatti said. “We spent a few weeks researching what USCDM currently does in the realm of community engagement and fundraising efforts and wanted to build on the strengths of existing efforts.” PG 3 and Pigott wanted to do the fundraising Rigatti
