DAN FREEMAN BEST PROFESSOR

KYLE VUILLE

Every student wants a good teacher, but what’s even better is having a teacher that makes going to class enjoyable. There are hundreds of professors that cover every subject and occupy every different school of study across campus, but based on student votes, professor Dan Freeman is the best of the best.

always the most enjoyable subject, so that’s why he likes to take a teasing jab at a student or throw in a couple jokes during lecture. He says he finds success in winning his students over by making this complicated subject easier to understand and getting students to feel more comfortable with the subject matter.

Freeman teaches chemistry, and as of August 2017, he will have been teaching for 20 years. Freeman says he realizes that chemistry isn’t

Aside from lecturing and spending time in the Jones building, Professor Freeman has been flying airplanes since the early ‘90s and can’t

get enough. He also golfs with a handicap of 8 strokes and likes playing guitar. Upon hearing he was voted Best Professor, Freeman’s response was simply “That’s awesome.” Students really appreciate having a professor they can count on to go above and beyond what is required. Professor Freeman fits that description, and his students commend him for that.

JULIETTE LAFERLITA

A newcomer to the Best of Carolina lineup, Pandini’s has stolen the hearts of on-campus diners with its variety of handmade pizzas, pastas, tossed salads and signature Labretti sandwiches. Pandini’s “Old World Style, New World Flavor” is captured in the brick oven used for all pizza and sandwich orders. The artisan pizzas are crisped to perfection and topped with your choice of classic pepperoni, buffalo chicken, garden veggies, macaroni and cheese and so much more. Try some of the seasonally featured pizzas like c hicken Philly

cheesesteak or Maui barbecue offered throughout the year. The Labrettis are another popular menu option at Pandini’s. A slightly different take on a calzone, Labrettis are hearty folded sandwiches stuffed with your choice of meatball parmesan, pesto chicken or even chicken ranch BLT. Each pasta and salad entrée is tossed-to-order and accompanied by a sweet, buttery breadstick to ensure your daily carbohydrate intake is fulfilled. “I like it because of the

people honestly,” says thirdyear nursing student Jazz Lyons. “If it’s somewhere with rude customer service, I’m not going to go back, but I feel like they’re really nice people… They’re always smiling and laughing.” Nothing beats a comforting Italian meal served by gracious, humorous employees after a long day on campus or in between your two toughest classes. Located on the first floor of the Russell House, students line up for Pandini’s during lunch and dinnertime, knowing very well their meal will not disappoint. DEJA VAUGHN

When students come to the University of South Carolina, the location of their on-campus dorm is an important factor. If you’re a female Gamecock looking to live on campus and want to be right in the middle of campus happenings, Patterson Hall is the ideal place to call home. The nine-floor building has a suite-style layout, allowing four girls to share two bedrooms and a bathroom. Many students find the suite-style dorms much more desirable than the communal

BEST ON-CAMPUS LIVING arrangement found in other residence halls. Each floor has a kitchen and a study lounge, and the building also has two residential meeting rooms, a cyber lounge and a laundry room. “It was so nice having semi-private bathrooms, and the location is impossible to beat,” said third-year management student Michaela Sharp, when asked why she loved living in Patterson.

Russell House, Patterson Hall exists in the true heart of campus and makes walking to class a small feat for residents. Although the building is over 50 years old, Patterson Hall underwent a massive renovation in 2010 and is widely regarded as one of the nicest dorms on campus today.

It’s evident that the sisters of Kappa Kappa Gamma have a strong bond, all striving to promote the concept of sisterhood and support the Carolina community through philanthropy work. There is no doubt that the sorority has worked dutifully to earn the title of best sorority on campus.

“Kappa has taught me to value friendship and forgiveness, to appreciate small moments and big ones, too, and to push myself to be more loving and positive every day,” said Bratun. “I have learned to take challenges in stride and confront problems with an open mind. Above all, Kappa Kappa

Fourth-year management science student Peter Sisserson says that his decision to join Beta Theta Pi is all thanks to the people he met during rush. “The guys I met were solid people,” said Sisserson. “They were a group of guys that I saw myself hanging with throughout college and making some

lifelong friends.” Sisserson says he’ll look back on his time as a brother of Beta Theta Pi fondly. “I am grateful for the experiences I’ve had such as getting to go to events in Gatlinburg, Savannah, and on Saint Simons Island with some of my greatest friends,” said Sisserson. “I’m also grateful for getting to meet a ton of people throughout the past four years, taking with me lots of connections for post-grad life.”

Every spring semester, as USC’s Dance Marathon approaches, an excited buzz takes over campus while students prepare for the highly anticipated event. USCDM has quickly become the largest student-run philanthropic o rga n i z at i o n h e re o n campus, and the organization’s main event, a 14-hour dance marathon that prohibits sitting or sleeping, has become one of the school’s most popular events. Over almost two decades, USCDM has

Third-year public relations student Jacki Fish, the external productions director for USCDM, says it’s all about helping those in need. “Palmetto Children’s Hospital is filled with 119 kids and their families. That’s 119 kids that need our help,” said Fish. “I promise you that once you stand

on your feet for 14 hours and hear how our miracle kids have overcome so many struggles, you will be hooked forever.” After two years of participating, she credits USCDM with changing her as a person. “Dance Marathon has taught me that anyone can change the world,” said Fish. “All it takes is a little bit of passion and a little bit of motivation, and anyone can make a difference in something you care about.”

PAWLEYS FRONT PORCH BEST BURGER HOLLY HEATON

“That’s how you serve it? With a dagger in it?” Guy Fieri said as he watched a chef in the Pawleys kitchen plunge a steak knife through the middle of a colossal, juicy burger on his popular Food Network show “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.” Yep, you read that right. The widely beloved Columbia landmark Pawleys Front Porch was featured on Food Network, highlighting the famous “Fripp Island Burger,” a half-pound burger topped with Southern salsa, boursin cheese and a tangy fried green tomato. Each burger at Pawleys starts the same way, with fresh, grade-A beef that

is ground and seasoned in-house, daily. Although, it’s the distinctive toppings—like grape jelly, caramelized onions and goat cheese or grilled pineapple, guacamole and citrus jalapeño mayonnaise—that make the burgers as unique as the South Carolina places they’re named for. Fresh, melt-in-your-mouth South Carolina seafood also graces the Pawleys menu, with items like grilled mahimahi tacos, fried crawfish tails and buffalo shrimp practically begging to be ordered. “Pawleys was actually the first restaurant I ever went to when visiting [USC] for a tour with my mom, and we loved it. I’ve gone there ever

since,” said Fiona Attix, a fourth-year public relations student. No matter which famous Pawleys meal you choose — the Beaufort or the Rockville, the fried green tomato BLT or the Caesar wrap — pair it with Frank’s Red Hot onion rings, a Southern sweet tea and a sunny day on the expansive front porch, and you’ll do your soul a lot of good.

Even if your morning consists of a missed alarm or an 8 a.m. exam you forgot to study for, there is nothing that a toasted blueberry bagel and large hazelnut coffee cannot fix. This exact logic explains the crowd of students surrounding the two Einstein’s locations on campus every single morning, waiting in anticipation for their chocolate chip, cinnamon raisin or lox-covered bagel to cure the early morning blues. “Their bagels are the best I’ve ever had,” said third-year psychology student Anja Derry. “And I like how they say your name when giving you your bagel — it makes it feel kind of personal.” DEJA VAUGHN

WILD WING CAFÉ BEST WINGS JALESA COOLEY

For years, Wild Wing Café has put other wing spots to shame in the eyes of USC students. Located in the Vista, this vibrantly staffed sports bar offers everything you need on the nights when a fancy dinner just isn’t what you’re craving. “I like Wild Wings because it always feels like home. Eating wings and watching sports always goes well together and Wild Wings is the place to do it,” said Nick Hooks, a first-year political science student.

COURTESY OF WILD WING CAFÉ

Wild Wing Café offers traditional bone-in and boneless wings in a variety of different sizes, tossed in your choice of 33 made from scratch sauces. Sprint to Wild Wing Café on “Two-For-Tuesday’s” with a friend and you both can get wings for the price of one. If that doesn’t scream good eatin’ on a college budget, what does? If you aren’t in the mood for wings, Wild Wing Café also offer wraps, ribs, sandwiches, soups and salads. The full-service bar offers

drink specials throughout the week and many nights you can find yourself the lucky winner of bingo. Go on, roll up your sleeves and head on over to Wild Wing Café to see why USC students have voted their wings the best for three years in a row.

KAMINSKY’S BEST DESSERT

HOLLY HEATON

Dinner is over and, naturally, you’re craving dessert. But this time, you’re dreaming of something other than a pint of ice cream from the grocery store or a slice of cake from the dining hall. You’re craving something a bit more fancy, sophisticated. Kaminsky’s in the heart of the Vista is calling your name — begging you to order pineapple mango sorbet, a chocolate monkey steamer or a toasted marshmallow milkshake complete with chocolate chips, graham crackers and, of course, a toasted marshmallow. The glamorous dessert bar features rotating specials including a variety of

gourmet cakes, macaroons, homemade cookies and other specialty desserts like tiramisu — served to you in an adorable mason jar. If you’re feeling a little wild, have an exciting achievement to celebrate or just want to switch up your post-work cocktail, any milkshake can be made an “adult shake” by adding in a mix of various top-shelf spirits or liqueurs. Try the adult-style Reese’s Cup milkshake, made with vanilla ice cream, chocolate chips, Reese’s peanut butter cups, chocolate syrup, and topped up with a shot of Frangelico, or the Krispy Kreme shake, filled with Krispy Kreme doughnut holes and Smirnoff Whipped

Vodka. “It’s fun to go [to Kaminsky’s] with your girlfriends, or it’s a cute date spot,” said fourth-year public relations student Morgan Dixon. Kaminsky’s upscale ambiance accompanied by classic flavors and treats makes the luxurious dessert bar Columbia’s favorite sweet tooth fix.

BOJANGLES BEST SWEET TEA ANNA SANDREUTER

During the fall, Saturdays in Columbia begin with a pilgrimage to Williams-Brice Stadium. The Gamecock faithful near and far gather together to watch the garnet gladiators defend Willy B against the latest foe. On this journey, fans bring the necessary provisions — treasured tailgate snacks and their drink of choice, sweet tea. This isn’t just any sweet tea, though. True Gamecocks know the only sweet tea worth drinking on a hot game day in Columbia comes from a Bojangles’ cup. The Bluff Road location is adjacent to the stadium, so fans will never fear running out of tea. However, other

locations can be found around the city, so even if the Gamecocks are out of town, your cup need never be empty. “Bojangles’ has good customer service. The cashiers are polite and the food is always hot and fresh,” said third-year retailing student Delrachel Phine. Though it’s undoubtedly a gameday favorite, a cold glass of Bojangles’ sweet tea is a wonderful decision any day. It’s perfectly sweet and Southern, pairing well with whatever’s on your menu. Try it with their mouthwatering crispy fried chicken and buttery biscuits. For those looking for a lighter

lunch, check out the Bo-Smart menu, filled with salad and grilled chicken options. No matter what you choose, as long as you’re washing it down with a cup of sweet tea, you’re guaranteed a delightful experience.

Brittons of Columbia has been a longstanding staple in the Columbia community, maintaining its status as one of the city’s premier clothing stores for over six decades. Located in the upscale Devine Street shopping district, Brittons is known for its impeccable-quality clothing and outstanding customer service. The employees at Brittons go above and beyond to ensure each customer leaves with exactly what they need and nothing less. Fo u r t h -ye a r p h a r m a c y

student Matthew Means loves shopping at Brittons because of the unique brands the store carries. “They have a wide variety of major brands not found in most stores, from Smathers and Branson to Vineyard Vines,” said Means. Need a new Vineyard Vines bow-tie? Brittons can help you with that. Maybe you’re shopping around for a warm Southern Tide sweater for when the temperature starts to drop. You’ll find that at Brittons. Do you need to buy a nice coat to impress

your date for Carolina Cup? Brittons will have just the thing for you. The successful high-end clothing store is the place to be for all things preppy, from sophisticated suits to trousers in vibrant colors.

which has made it the Best Grocery voted by USC students for the eighth year in a row.

The Gervais Street Publix location is ideal for any student with accessible transportation, as you’ll probably need more than two hands to carry all of your purchased items.

Publix offers plenty of specials throughout the week as well, allowing students and Columbia residents on a budget to shop for the essentials and then some. Store employees are approachable and offer help around the store, personally leading customers to their desired product, and always with a smile.

For your daily needs, Publix is stocked with fresh produce, a full-service deli, precooked meals, snacks, toiletries, pharmaceutical products and so much more,

“PubSubs!” Next time you stop in, be sure to try a signature PubSub with Boar’s Head or Publix Deli meat, topped with your choice of cheese, vegetables and seasonings for a flavorful, hearty, healthy meal on the go.

ULTRATAN

When the radiant yellow daffodils begin to bloom on the University of South Carolina’s historic Horseshoe, springtime has officially begun. Students walk hastily along the russet brick pathways to class in flip flops and sunglasses, daydreaming of tropical spring break destinations.

BEST SPRAY TAN

Fortunately, a spray tan from Ultra Tan is just the cure for a day full of classes indoors. Even on the cloudiest Columbia day, you can escape to Ultra Tan’s taste of paradise right in Five Points. An Ultra Tan spray tan will leave you bronzed and beautiful instead of streaky and orange, which is why this trendy tanning boutique was voted the best place to get a spray tan in the capital city. “The staff was very helpful going as a first-time spray tanner and everything was

very clean. They also give a discount the first time you go which is always a great perk as a broke college student,” said Mallory Corrigan, a fourth-year public relations student. Don’t blend in with the sand this year. A spray tan like this one will make you feel confident to post your new radiant skin on Instagram – no filter. Ultra Tan Sunless memberships are available to keep your skin glowing all year round.

OLYMPIA & GRANBY MILLS BEST OFF-CAMPUS LIVING

ALEX NAGEL

Just a short walk or bike ride away from both campus and Williams-Brice Stadium, the Olympia and Granby Mills have consistently been one of the most popular options for students wanting to live off campus. The Mills are known for their expansive apartments with high ceilings, spacious rooms and irresistible historic charm. While close enough to campus to walk to class, the apartments are on the route for the University of South Carolina Comet Shuttle for those students who would rather catch a ride.

Fourth-year public relations student Chloe Schmidt loves living at the Mills because of the unique design. “I love living at Granby because it’s different than all other off-campus housing, with its two level apartments, long hallways, old wooden floors and very tall ceilings,” said Schmidt. The Mills resident events calendar, complete with special events and on-site parties, keeps tenants busy and having fun. When asked why he loved living at the Mills, third-year finance student Adam Brovarone said

he loved the environment and appreciated the opportunity to unwind and have fun with other tenants of the apartments. “My experience in Olympia couldn’t be better,” said Brovarone. “Whether it’s playing basketball or laying by the pool, Olympia is a great place to meet up with friends and make new ones as well.”

FRANK’S CAR WASH BEST CAR WASH

KYLE VUILLE

Most college students own a car and take pride in their cherished rides. While most students also take pride in driving a clean vehicle around town, they may not have the appropriate cleaning products to wash a car properly from the inside out. Additionally, trying to find time to finish hours of homework, attend student organization meetings, and have any inkling of a social life is difficult enough without scheduling in time to thoroughly wash your car. In addition to those setbacks, finding a water spigot around your apartment building might not be worth the effort.

This is where Frank’s Car Wash comes into play. Frank’s Car Wash has been providing Columbians with squeaky-clean vehicles for over four decades, and now has 15 locations around the state. Frank’s uses high-quality products to ensure your whip gets back to its former, glorious shine. Both efficient and thorough, the folks at Frank’s treat every car that drives in their lot as they would their own. At any full-service Frank’s location, you can get your car washed and vacuumed and windows cleaned for just $20. Feel like taking it up a notch? The Turtle Wax Ice Special includes the basics in addition to Turtle Wax

Ice, Rainbow Wax, armored tires, air freshener and wheel cleaner for $32. Next time you’re in the market for a car wash, drive over to Frank’s and the helpful staff will gladly take care of you and yours.
