LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
I always feel quick to remind everyone that Columbia is an underrated city. Sure, it doesn’t have the beachfront landscapes that Charleston has, but we have a growing and active culture here that is something to be proud of. From cafés to nature walks, students to professionals and the sporty to the artsy, Columbia finds different ways to lift each of us up. It also seems that Columbia is on the rise. Main Street is ever-developing and expanding, an arts district is in the works in the Vista, and USC’s campus also has long-term plans for some major expansion and renovation. Columbia recently made it onto National Geographic’s list of Best Small Cities in the U.S. and was just featured on Delta Sky Magazine as well. This year we interviewed a wide variety of students, professors, community members and professionals in the hopes of showing you the best that Columbia has to offer. Whether you are new to the area, just visiting, a student or a long-time resident, I hope that our 2018 edition of Best of Carolina inspires you to get to know the city in a way you haven’t before.

When starting life as a campus student, one of the first things you ask yourself is, “Where am I going to live?” We all seem to wish f o r a p l e a s a n t re s i d e n ce hall that has easy access to many on-campus locations. Fortunately, if you are able to call Patterson Hall your on-campus home, your wish will come true.
Marble Slab is only a couple of minutes away!
Originally an all-female dorm, Patterson Hall recently made its debut as a co-gender dorm. That’s right, guys, you get to live in this on-campus haven as well.
This residence hall is one of the more newly renovated dorms on campus. The suite-style dorm consists of two bedrooms and one bathroom, shared between four residents. Patterson Hall provides a kitchen and study lounge on each floor of the building—the perfect space for a long night of studying. Patterson also offers learning community events, which is a great way for any new students to meet new people and make new friends.
Patterson Hall is located on central campus, right outside of the Bull Street parking garage and Russell House, which means that your midnight ice cream cravings can easily be fulfilled, as

The Community Table MICHAELA LOPEZ CAITLIN NEBEL
The Community Table is a relatively new restaurant in comparison to the school’s 200-plusyear history but, given its popularity, it will be here for years to come. Located at 650 Lincoln, across from Strom and Greek Village and close to Colonial Life Arena, the eatery is the perfect distance from campus to top off a great day or start a great night. Some choice menu items include the pho noodle bowl, a dish of Asian rice noodles in soy-miso broth, and the baja fish taco featuring fresh Pollock fried and breaded in a taco shell. For breakfast, order a “bangin’ breakfast burrito”—a wrap with
pan-scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese and bacon. For dinner, there’s much to choose from, but the pepper jack double stack burger, which includes avocado, salsa, and—of course—pepper jack cheese, comes highly recommended. The famous hit of The Community Table, though, is the “Holy Grail” five-cheese macaroni made with Havarti, pepper jack, cheddar, mozzarella and gouda. Finish off your feast with another star of the restaurant: the chocolate brownie of the South. This dessert is topped with a caramel and chocolate drizzles, whipped cream and vanilla ice cream.

KAITLYN FINN
Dance Marathon, fondly referred to as USCDM, is the largest student organization on campus with continual growth. Participants fundraise constantly throughout the school year leading up to the main event, held in the spring semester, where they stay on their feet for the full 14-hour dance marathon. Th e s u m o f m o n ey g o e s to supporting the Child Life Program at the Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, the local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, located right in Columbia. USDCM has themed events, holds percent nights at neighboring restaurants, and helps surrounding high schools host “mini marathons” all to aid in fundraising for the spring. Dance Marathon made its f i r st a p p e a ra n ce o n c a m p u s i n 1 9 9 8 a n d h a s ra i s e d ove r $3.5 million since. Last spring, USCDM raised a whopping $703,289, the largest amount in the history of the organization.
Current president Jax Boucher realizes the strong impact that USCDM has on everyone involved, from the kids in the hospital to the Dance Marathon participants. “I love Dance Marathon because it allows you to see the difference you’re making in the community,” says Boucher. “ T h e n u m b e r o f t i m e s I ’ ve mentioned Dance Marathon and the children’s hospital to random people and then found out that they’ve had an experience there is truly insane—so many families are touched by the hospital and they all agree that they’ve received the best care possible when there. To know that we help make that possible is what makes Dance Marathon so special to me.” With Dance Marathon celebrating its 20th year at the University of South Carolina in 2018, it seems fitting that it also celebrates being named the best student organization on campus.

There is nothing more satisfying than biting into the best cinnamon roll in South Carolina at the end of a delicious meal of egg sandwich and orange juice. You will remember how lucky you are to live in Columbia when you eat at the one and only location of the world-renowned Cinnamon Roll Deli. In case you needed more evidence than the heavenly goods of the deli, the restaurant has been featured on the Food Network, Buzzfeed and Mental Floss to back up the perfection they bake up. The small deli is always bustling with customers dying to get a taste of this famous spot. The pastel blue walls are adorned with art from local creators and advertisements for community events. A big
table sits with a premium view of the enticing dessert case and allows for a small gathering of cinnamon roll enthusiasts. Outside, you’ll find a few seats to enjoy your meal under an umbrella. Despite its big reputation, the restaurant continues to maintain a small-town charm with a love of Columbia. We highly recommend The Big Pig egg sandwich, The Susie Q panini, a bowl of Carolina Chili, and, of course, any of the titular cinnamon rolls. Regardless of what you order, though, you can’t go wrong as long as you go to the Cinnamon Roll Deli.

2017 brought many changes to campus, one of which included a new place to dine. 1801 Grille opened in collaboration with the owners of 650 Lincoln and is located on the bottom floor of the apartment complex. Chef Jason Bruner fills the kitchen with local and regional traditional Southern food oftentimes with a flair. Try their Brick Oven Wild Boar & Bison Meatloaf with a pancetta crust accompanied by sweet potato and Szechuan green beans to see what we mean. Pair your entree with Crawfish Deviled Eggs, an example of the twists on classics 1801 Grille has created. Add Napa Cabbage Peanut Slaw as a side for an EastCoast-meets-West-Coast wonder. Finish your meal with delightful
Cinnamon Sugar Donuts dipped in sea salt caramel and whipped cream. All of the fantastic dishes at 1801 Grille can and should be enjoyed with a selection from the extensive wine, craft beer and cocktail menu such as the 1801 Tea Party, a drink of aged rum, pineapple, lime, and black tea. 1801 Grille also features a delicious buffet-style Sunday brunch for $15. Check out their daily specials and twice-nightly happy hours for more deals on great food. If there are two things South Carolinians are known for, it is their Southern hospitality and love for good craft beer. River Rat Brewery, located in Columbia, S.C., can offer you both of these things. River Rat Brewery, located on Shop Road, has been perfecting their craft beer since 2013. With an ever-changing selection of craft beers, they have something for everyone. From permanent beers such as Kerry’s Peanut Butter Porter to seasonal beers such as the Winter Warmer Ale, if you have a flavor in mind they probably have it. What makes this brewery so unique is the fact that they constantly perfect and make new flavors of craft beer that may not be offered elsewhere, like Kerry’s Peanut Butter Porter. Hungry, you say? Don’t worry, River Rat Brewery has that category covered, too. The Brewery has a food menu to go with their delicious craft beers. It is perfect for a meal out with friends, and on Fridays, they open

Many students wish to experience different cultures, but finding the time to travel to a new place to do this can be nearly impossible due to busy class and social schedules. Luckily, there is a festival here in Columbia that gives us the opportunity to experience one culture for a span of four days: the Columbia Greek Festival! The Greek Festival has been a hit in Columbia for 31 years. Taking place on Sumter Street across from the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, this festival offers everything Greek. The best part is this festival raises money for charity while allowing you to experience Greek culture. Greek food is obviously a big hit at the Greek Festival. There are many different opportunities to try Greek favorites throughout the festival.
Don’t be afraid to eat a little more than you should while experiencing this festival—it will be well worth it! Though there are many food and dessert options, this festival has much more to offer. The Greek festival has many different shops offering things such as Grecian-style clothes and art. There is also music and dancing for any spirited patrons. While enjoying the authentic Greek life, don’t forget to stop and take a tour of the cathedral! The Greek Festival is one that leaves people wanting more each year. If you missed it this past year, be on the lookout for it this fall. It is a festival you won’t want to miss!
