Loaded JCC football team takes aim at state title
BY SKYLER JACKSON
JACKSON — This year’s Jackson County Central football team may have its best chance at winning the state championship in a while.
That’s saying something, considering that the Huskies are among the best Class AA teams in the state every year. What makes this year’s squad stand out is the amount of depth and experience it has coming back.
JCC’s roster is big in numbers this season. It has seven starters from the offense and nine from the defense returning from last season and many of them are among the best in the state at their position.
“...Our numbers are as high as they've been in a long time,” said Huskies head coach Tom Schuller. “I think we're at 63 (players) so we've been able to practice varsity with varsity and JV with JV, which has put us light years ahead of what we normally are, so that's been great. It's been, I don't know how many years it's been since we've been able to do that, but a long time. So that allows us, A, to get more reps, B, to get more quality, like when we're going live passing we're going against good players so I think it gets (them) ready for game speed better.”
Among the key returners back are seniors Ben Dahlin, a speedster at receiver and defensive back, Clay Malchow, a standout at running back and defensive back, Ian Titterington at guard and linebacker and Tavion Diggs at running back and linebacker along with big and tough junior lineman junior Weston Rowe. All of those players were named Class AA preseason all-state.
Then there’s quarterback Roman Voss, the top junior class football recruit in the state of Minnesota and the Class AA Preseason Player of the Year pick. He also plays safety on defense.
Voss returns after a season of ups and downs last fall. He missed the first two games of the season due to a hand injury before coming back and dazzling on the field. He continued to do so all the way through the section playoffs and into the state semifinals.
But on the first play of the second half against Barnesville, Voss took a hit and left the game on a stretcher after suffering a concussion. That injury kept him out through the start of basketball season.
“I mean, just don't take anything for granted. You never know, obviously,” Voss said. “I mean, I could’ve never played football again from that hit and (I’m) so blessed that I am now. I'm playing with my brothers, and just really, really excited for the season to start.”
With the experience and depth surrounding the roster, Schuller said JCC’s playing style won’t look much different than last year. The team has been practicing a little differently though, putting even more of a focus in the weight room.
It’s paid off according to Schuller, who said it might be the best offseason his team has ever had in that area. All of this is in an effort to keep players stronger, which could keep them healthy throughout the season.
“We're trying to get over the hump, we're practicing a little bit differently,” Schuller said. “This year, we maintained our weightlifting during two-a-days, which we have not done, but I think our experiences have kind of afforded us to do that. We want to hold the weight and the strength gains we made throughout the whole year, so we're going to try some different things with that in mind.”
JCC plays its first game Thursday at Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial. After that is the
Huskies’ home opener Sep. 6 against the Worthington Trojans to begin their quest for the state title, a title they’ve come close to before since the program last won in 2001.
The Huskies were within striking distance of playing for the title each of the last two years. They went undefeated in the regular season, dominated their way through the Section 3AA playoffs and then made it to the Class AA state semifinals in 2022 and 2023.
But JCC would succumb to the same opponent in Barnesville both times. Last year’s loss was especially painful as the Huskies were ahead at halftime before Voss’ injury, eventually losing 38-23.
With a healthy Voss and many of the same faces from last year back, this could be the Huskies’ year.
“The optimism is high,” Schuller said. “We've put the work in and we have to continue to do that. And then it's, you know, each game, we got to get better. No matter what happens, we have to get better. And they know that, and I think they're up to that challenge.”
“If we just keep the drama out and keep being brothers and injury free, I mean, we got a really good chance and we really think that,” Voss said. “And we've been thinking that ever since we lost against Barnesville last year. We want it so bad.”

W-WG volleyball team looks to build on last year's success
BY SKYLER JACKSON The Globe
WESTBROOK — The Westbrook-Walnut Grove volleyball team saw lots of success last year and the expectation is to keep it up this season.
The Chargers went 23-5 last year, a mark they hadn’t come close to reaching in nearly a decade.
They finished on the doorstep of making it to Marshall, where the Section 3A South championship was played. Their season ended one step short in an epic five-setter to Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda.
There’s optimism and expectation for the Chargers to have a similar level of success again. But they’ll look to do it without key position players who graduated from last year, like libero Abby Wiggins and setter Addeson Jenniges.
Due to losing some of that experience and leadership, Chargers head coach Meghann Westover said the dynamic of practices has been different, but it has gone well so far.
“Little bit different dynamic this year than we've had in years past so we're just kind of working through that,” Westover said. “But it's been really good, the attitude and effort has been really good.”
A lot of that is due to the handful of veteran players returning to the squad this year.
Other fixtures on the team include a group of seniors in middle hitter Riley Parker, middle hitter/right side Faith Marsh and libero Liv Locke. There’s also the tall junior middle blocker Leah Carter and the fierce outside hitting duo of senior Natalie Wahl and junior Carlie Ross.
Wahl enters her senior year following a junior campaign that saw her reach new heights in many areas. A major front-row presence where she hit 354 kills last year, Wahl also showed versatility with over 300 digs and a 94% serve
rate as well. That led to her being named all-Red Rock Conference.
Wahl said her biggest improvement in the last year has been her defense. She has also stepped up as a leader, taking a bit more of a coaching-like role on the team.
“I love helping the girls and with everything if they need help, if they have a question, I just love helping them, especially because I feel like I know a lot about volleyball, and I just want to make them better people and better volleyball players,” Wahl said.
Stepping into the setter position will be the sophomore duo of Hadley Jenniges, Addeson's younger sister, and Myah Mazino. Westover said the team will look to run a 6-2 rotation between both players.
Getting Jenniges and Mazino transitioned into those roles has been a major focus area in practice for the Chargers with Westover wanting them to build a strong setter-hitter connection. The new connection has looked good to Westover in early practices, but it is something that could still get better. Team chemistry has also been strong so far, but that could continue to improve as well.
“Just developing off of our strengths, we know our outside hitters are strong, we obviously plan to use them,” Westover said. “But for the first time in a long time we have some height. Our girls are a little taller, not tall, but taller than they have been, so I'm hoping to see better blocking out of our girls this season, which will also help our defense.”
“I think one thing that we still need to work on a little bit is our chemistry, because we still have a couple of new players,” Wahl said. “And having chemistry with our setters just makes hitting better, and just all around chemistry.”
Westover, Wahl and the rest of the veteran Charger players and coaches who got a taste of
last season’s success want to run it back this year and keep the momentum going.
“The team has already set some lofty goals for themselves,” Westover said. “You know, they got a taste, almost got a taste of Marshall last year, and that's their goal. They want to get past that, want to get past that second round of (section) playoffs. They want to see as much success as they had last year. I still think we can hit that top three in the conference. Yeah, I mean big goals, but a big work ethic too.”
