A basketball tradition begins Merry Christmas, happy holidays and welcome to the The Daily News’ 2011-12 High School Basketball preview magazine. Our sportswriters, copy editors, photographers and sports editor worked with the head coaches of all 28 prep basketball teams in our coverage area to bring this project to fruition. We hope what you see and read reflects this community’s love of basketball, and as we expand and improve this magazine in years to come, we hope it becomes a familiar winter milestone — like the banging of the gavel at center court before tip-off at Ted M. Natt Court, the steely gaze of the wooden Lumberjack perched beside Joe Moses Court or the sharp contours of Toutle Lake coach Eric Swanson’s buzz-cut. Inside, you’ll find a team-by-team tour that stretches west to Ilwaco, east to Toutle, north to Toledo and south to Woodland. Like any newborn, we hope this magazine grows in personality and substance in

subsequent years. In our inaugural version, we familiarize you with key players from each team, share a little recent (and sometimes ancient) history, give you a peek inside the thinking of head coaches and offer a sense of where each team has been — and where it hopes to be — by March. This magazine is different from our annual prep football magazine. Each of the 28 basketball teams in our coverage area has already begun its journey, and most schools have completed a quarter or more of their regular season. Some lineups have changed. Some goals have already been tested in the heat of battle. This magazine offers a glance at the stories that will unfold as the calendar turns. A pulsecheck, if you will, before the gut-checks start coming fast and furious. This is only the beginning. Ben Zimmerman Daily News sports editor

monarchs Q&A with coach rooklidge Which departed senior left the biggest hole to fill? “Taybra Teeters was our second leading scorer and our leading rebounder last season, so she is a key departure.” Which game is circled on your schedule? “With due respect, we try not to focus on any single game or opponent. We respect all of our opponents, and we try to focus on competing with ourselves. We do have some non-conference games scheduled with Evergreen Conference foes which will be an interesting and revealing look for us.” Which unheralded player should Monarch fans keep an eye on? “Several of our players could be called ‘unheralded.’ We are a team that contributes by committee because we have solid depth. Many players will have to contribute in different ways and understand their roles.” How does this year’s team compare to last year’s squad? “We are more experienced, more knowledgeable, more connected, and more efficient in how we operate, given that we had an offseason to prepare ourselves for this season. We are in a better position to be successful this year given that we have had more time to prepare and are more comfortable with our schemes we run. Last season was a learning year for us, given that we had a new coaching staff and a young team.” What is the first item on your team-goals checklist? What is the last item? “We want to continually compete and improve on a daily basis in our practices. We want to give great effort and be great teammates.”

lassies Q&A with Coach DeWeert Which departed senior left the biggest hole to fill? “Mackenzie Martin. She was such a versatile and explosive player.” Which game is circled on your schedule? “Our Camas game, because they are the team that knocked us out of districts last year. We split during the regular season, but they beat us in the semifinals in the district tournament.” Which unheralded player should Lassie fans keep an eye on? “Brianna Sorenson. She’s a sophomore sharpshooter who put in a lot of time this spring and summer. Her ballhandling is much improved, and she’s embracing the expectation of being a shooter for us this year. I also think Jamilee Iddings is going to be an impact player for us this year. She’s just a freshman, but she has an amazing skill-set and is quite versatile at different positions.” How does this year’s team compare to last year’s squad? “This team is younger, but I think they are more basketball savvy. Natasha and Taylor played on a summer tournament team, and Jamilee and Loryn have played a lot of tournament basketball. The experiences they have had away from our program have made them all smarter basketball players.” What is the first item on your team-goals checklist? What is the last item? “First goal (is) to get in shape. We want to play fast, so our kids have to embrace conditioning. Our No. 1 goal is always to be the best-conditioned team. Last, make the roundof-16 state tournament.”

Q&a with CoaCh KinCh which departed senior left the biggest hole to fill? ª The entire senior class was a great group. When I think of one of them, I think of all of them. They epitomized what a senior class should represent in Kelso Basketball.º which unheralded player should hilander fans keep an eye on? ª We are young in terms of varsity experience, but each player we have is really capable of playing at this level. At this point, we are all unheralded.º how does this year' s team compare to last year' s squad? ª We compare to last year' s team as

far as how hard we are working at practice. This group is very eager to learn and has shown a great work ethic at practice, just as last year' s team did.º what is the first item on your team-goals checklist? what is the last item? ª Our immediate goal for this team is to show improvement in a tough nonleague schedule and develop a team chemistry that has been a strong characteristic of Kelso teams the previous six seasons. Overall, we hope to compete for a district playoff berth and be playing our best basketball at the end of our season, when games carry a bit more significance.º

which game is circled on your schedule? ª The next one. We just need to stay focused on playing our best each night out.º which unheralded player should Columbian fans keep an eye on? ª I think there are a couple of guys to watch for. Ethan McGlone played a ton of minutes last year and does all the little things that don' t show up on the stat sheet. He' ll guard the other team' s best guys and work his butt off without worrying about how many points he' s going to score. Sophomores Cody Gellatly and Jordan Brittain will step in and play some big minutes.º how does this year' s team compare to last year' s squad? ª We have a lot of guys back, so things look pretty similar. We' ll be a little quicker and will try to take advantage of that a little more on the break and in the half court.º what is the first item on your team-goals checklist? what is the last item? ª The first thing is to get all of our guys healthy off another great football season and preparing ourselves for league. We want to put ourselves in the mix for a league title, and compete for one of the final eight spots at the state tournament in Coos Bay.º notes Rainier was ranked eighth in the initial Oregon Class A Coaches Poll ahead of league rival Valley Catholic in ninth. ... which game is circled on your schedule? ª All of the games are circled, we love this time of year and respect all of our opponents. If I had to narrow it down a little I would have to say the Tumwater and W.F. West preseason games are going to show us immediately where we are at. Later on, everyone is going to be trying to see if they can compete with Mark Morris. The Monarchs are absolutely loaded and if we can compete with them, we might have a chance to be decent.º which unheralded player should Beaver fans keep an eye on? ª Brianne Koering is a 6-0 senior that is not flashy but is real athletic. She can jump straight up and touch 9-7 and she was on our state-placing x 00 relay team as a sophomore. Madison Sorensen also comes to mind. She is a -6 sophomore that can do a little of everything. She can dribble, shoot and play some point guard or post if we need it. She is a smart kid that is a team player and gives our lineup some flexibility.º how does this year' s team compare to last year' s squad? ª This year' s team is not nearly as seasoned or experienced. We have an odd dynamic in that we have four seniors, one sophomore and four freshmen on varsity. We still will be able to play big in Smith, Koering and Mulder, but we will be more balanced scoring, whereas last year we leaned on Charity Arn and Hannah Ingraham a lot. º what is the first item on your team-goals checklist? what is the last item? ª (Our) first goal (is to) get to be a functional unit, so we don' t look like a yard sale out there. (Our) last goal (is to) see if we can ` make a little money' at this yard sale.º

which departed senior left the biggest hole to fill? ª League MVP Charity Arn was a phenomenal athlete that was a threat to score at any time. She was a hard matchup for a lot of teams. This year, our goals are to have fun, execute the offense, run new defenses, and try (to) make a run for state. Last but not least, (we want) to keep the drama off the court and just play the game of basketball.º

lumberjacks Q&A WITH COACH WALLACE Which departed senior left the biggest hole to fill? “It’s hard to say, they all played team ball and contributed in their own way. We didn’t have any lights-out guys last year. However, the biggest hole to fill will be at the point guard and at center. These two positions will be filled by two kids that played freshmen ball last year.” Which game is circled on your schedule? “The two games with Mark Morris, because kids, parents, the student body and fans really come out. It’s like a class reunion for both schools, a social event for the community with a basketball game as the backdrop. If the game is close, then it becomes pretty ferocious.” Which unheralded player should Lumberjack fans keep an eye on? “That’s yet to be seen. Most of my team is unheralded, but if I had to pick someone I’d choose Jacob Johnston. He’s a junior in his second year of organized basketball. Jacob has long arms, a soft touch and a nose for the ball.”

How does this year’s team compare to last year’s squad? “Last year’s team was all seniors except for Keenan Marin and Joe Buckley, who would swing up from the JV team. Last year’s team also exhibited a lot more experience and size.” What is the first item on your team-goals checklist? What is the last item? “Learning the system and what it’s like to play varsity basketball. It’ll be more about development than wins and losses. We’re not deep, and barring injuries I hope we can gel as a team and maybe surprise some people as the season progresses.” Notes Senior Tyler VonDracek was named to the all-Greater St. Helens 2A League first team last season, with senior Bronson Folz-Edwards earning second-team accolades, and seniors Chandler Blanks and Sullivan Carter receiving honorable mention accolades. lumberjills Q&a with CoaCh speed what game is circled on your schedule? ª We always look forward to playing Mark Morris. They' re the team to beat in our league.º

lumBeRJill pRospeCtus 2010-11 record: - 6 postseason: None

which unheralded player should lumberjill fans keep an eye on? ª Sierra Welch and Jenny Hagen are the two players you should keep an eye on this year. Welch is figuring out she is a good point guard and is finally starting to shoot the basketball. Hagen is an excellent athlete. When she wants to, she can use her speed and athletic ability to be something special. Paige Snair, if she gets healthy, could help us with her rebounding and defensive skills. We are hoping she recovers from a soccer injury which happened early in the year.º

Which departed senior left the biggest hole to fill? “Brianna Votaw was a first-team allleague player the last two years. She was an excellent leader. Brianna averaged a double-double last year, and that production will be impossible to replace.”

Head coach: J.B. Ewers

Which game is circled on your schedule? “We play Tenino twice this year in a home-and-home series. Tenino ended our season last year and that game did not go well for us. We will be looking to redeem ourselves a bit for that loss.”

Ewers’ career record at Toledo: 8-13

Which unheralded player should Indian fans keep an eye on? “Denacia Oberg and Kenzee Harlan are two super sophomores. They will get a ton of playing time and we are going to rely on them to add some scoring punch. They are both excellent athletes and outstanding young ladies. Our future looks bright with these two young talents.” How does this year’s team compare to last year’s squad? “Well, we lost six seniors to graduation, so we are going to be very young. I think we will be a team that struggles early but improves every game. I believe we will be a dangerous team by the end of the season. We will be playing two freshmen and two sophomores quite a bit. We will be very young, however the future looks great.” What is the first item on your team-goals checklist? What is the last item? “The first goal for me is to make it to state or regionals (whatever it is now). Toledo girls basketball had five-straight state appearances come to an end last year. The last item is to make sure my players represent Toledo basketball with pride and honor. The previous four years we played in the district championship game, but last year we fell short of that. I need to get the program back to that point and I think we are heading in the right direction.”

beavers Q&a with CoaCh shepheRd which departed senior left the biggest hole to fill? ª Oliver Moss, (for his) leadership.º which unheralded player should Beaver fans keep an eye on? ª Harley Bean. He is our sixth man and when he is on the floor, we are better offensively. He can shoot the three, is finishing a lot better this year and can rebound. I look for him to have a breakout year. He had 0 points and rebounds in our first game that were key to our victory.º how does this year' s team compare to last year' s squad? ª We are more experienced. Four of my five starters this year started as freshmen last year. My guys have gotten more mature, both physically and mentally. Freshman Troy Flanagan is our defensive stopper, he brings toughness and a winning mentality to our team. The team chemistry is great, we have team-first guys; it has not been that way on my prior teams here. We will pose matchup problems for teams. I have four kids that can shoot the three and create off the dribble. If we can keep guys in front of us defensively and rebound, we will be dangerous. These guys have put in the time in the offseason and summer, and their hard work is beginning to pay dividends. I have great kids who deserve success. It should be an exciting year.º what is the first item on your teamgoals checklist? what is the last item? ª We want to be in every game we play. Last year, we were blown out on numerous occasions. We are trying to prevent that this season. The focus this year is keeping guys in front of us on defense and rebounding the ball. We have gotten better in these areas but still have a long way to go. If we can keep our turnovers down, space the floor offensively and execute, we will be tough to guard. Every time we step on the floor we want to play to our potential and limit mental lapses. If we can do that, it will be a successful year.º

However, I would say Devon Rivard, who averaged close to a double-double, is a large hole to fill.º which game is circled on your schedule? ª I don' t have any game on our calendar circled. However, the minute you look past someone, that game comes back to haunt you.º which unheralded player should Chinook fans keep an eye on? ª We have a very solid team, and for us to be successful, each player will be relied upon. I don' t see us having one player standing out above the rest.º how does this year' s team compare to last year' s squad? ª I think that this year' s squad is very comparable to last year' s team in terms of our depth and talent. We are very excited as a coaching staff to see how we stack up once games start and to see how this team will grow as the season progresses.º what is the first item on your team-goals checklist? what is the last item? ª I think the first item would be to get everyone healthy, as we have some kids dealing with nagging injuries from football. Q&a with CoaCh maCy which departed senior left the biggest hole to fill? ª Leonel Mendoza will very hard to replace. He was our best defender and leading scorer.º what game is circled on your schedule? ª We don' t really have a particular game circled. The goal is to be playing our best basketball by the end of the season.º which unheralded player should Comet fans keep an eye on? ª We really have quite a few players who have the ability to contribute. It will depend on their work ethic and desire to consistently show up to practice with improvement on their minds.º how does this year' s team compare to last year' s squad? ª This year' s team should be just as competitive as last year' s squad. They' re athletic, very competitive and are hard workers. Just how far they go will depend on their ability to focus on improving basketball skills and working together as a team.º what is the first item on your team-goals checklist? what is the last item? ª The goal is to get better every practice and every game. which departed senior left the biggest hole to fill? ª Brad Williamson was our only experienced kid last year and gave us some versatility in the post. He could score both inside and out, led our team in rebounding and handled the ball well enough to be an effective pressure release in the post. Most importantly, Brad was just a tough kid that you could depend on to compete every night. He was our team leader, and this year' s group has to find someone who can step forward and fill that void.º which game is circled on your schedule? ª It' s the next game on the calendar. Now, if you were to ask our players, I' m sure you' d get a heavy dose of Kalama and Ridgefield simply because those have been the traditional rivals for our program over the years. From a coach' s perspective, I believe the best teams have a consistency to their preparation. You only get 0 guaranteed opportunities each year to compete. The goal is to make each one of those special.º

Q&a with CoaCh Johnson

last state playoff berth: 009

projected starting lineup pG: Cale Johnson G: Will Dolan G: Nate Williamson F: Austin Moore F: Austin Gehring

which unheralded player should Rocket fans keep an eye on? ª Austin Moore is a great athlete. He came up to the varsity full-time in the second half of last season and really impacted the game. His offensive skills are a little raw, but he' s a tremendous athlete. He' s got a great motor and knows how to compete.º how does this year' s team compare to last year' s squad? ª We graduated four seniors and all of our size. We return our backcourt, but after that we have a team with limited varsity experience. I do think we are significantly quicker and more athletic than we were a year ago. No doubt there are going to be some learning experiences along the way, but we have tough kids who' ll compete and get better as the season progresses.º what is the first item on your team-goals checklist? what is the last item? ª They are one in the same ... daily improvement. We have only two players with significant varsity experience, so we need to make consistent small steps forward each day. Our ability to truly embrace that commitment will go a long way in determining what kind of team we can become over time.º notes Will Dolan and Cale Johnson were named to the all-Southwest A Trico second-team last season. ... The Rockets were ranked th in the State Boys Class A preseason poll conducted by the Washingtonpreps.rivals.com Web site.

rockets Q&A WITH COACH MISNER Which departed senior left the biggest hole to fill? “Ellie Halladay. She worked very hard, was a good defender and led the team in charges taken.” Which game is circled on your schedule? “For me, it’s always the first game. The kids are always excited to get the games underway. I want to see where we are in our development — what are we doing well; what are our strengths/weaknesses; what do we need to work on; how are the new players going to fit in.”

Which unheralded player should Rocket fans keep an eye on? “Kenzie Dahl and Nicole Seidl. Over the years Kenzie has taken a back seat to her teammates, but she has returned this season as a much improved player. She’s a solid defender and a legitimate offensive threat whenever she gets the ball. Nicole, although just a freshman, plays with a great deal of confidence and intensity. She brings a ‘never say die attitude’ and is always hustling.” How does this year’s team compare to last year’s squad? “We have four starters back and our fifth is a girl who started the last few games of the season. With this type of experience, we are definitely a stronger team. Our bench is deeper and more versatile than last year so we should be able to rest players more and give our opponents different looks.” What is the first item on your team-goals checklist? What is the last item? “The first goal is to play hard, play to the best of our ability, and have fun every night out. The last goal is to get as deep as we can into the postseason by playing sound, fundamental basketball. Also to have no regrets.”

It will be attempted by committee, between (seniors) Kellie Grieve, Logan Manecke, Kaylie Granlund and (junior) Jackie Smith. Hopefully between the four of the, we will be able to defend, rebound and get some points!” Which game is circled on your schedule? “January 10 (vs. Castle Rock) and January 20 (vs. Stevenson). Both are home games and could be very important for...positioning in the league standings. As of right now, I see Castle Rock and Stevenson (as) the top two teams in the league, on paper. Could be very important games for us to get in the mix.” Which unheralded player should Fishermen fans keep an eye on? “Amanda Bell. All 5-foot-3 of her. She is a hard-nosed player who can put the ball on the floor and get to the hoop. (She will be known more) for her defense. She will defend the other team’s best player most of the time. Elleigh Kaino (4)

How does this year’s team compare to last year’s squad? “Our new motto for the year (is) ‘New Faces and Names, Same Dream!’ We are very similar to last year’s squad, but with a bunch of girls nobody has seen. We will need to put pressure on people by using different schemes, depending on who our opponent is. It’s a group that has put a lot of time in (in) the gym. (We) just need some time to figure out who is going to do what, and when.” What is the first item on your team-goals checklist? What is the last item? “First item is to defend the league title. I’ve always believed that you remain the champ until someone knocks you off. (We want) to get one of the top two spots in the league to avoid the crossover games to get into districts. (We also want to) put ourselves in a position to play in the game to get to regionals.”

fishermen Q&A with Coach Meinhardt Which departed senior left the biggest hole to fill? “Without a doubt, we will miss four-year starting point guard Karl Oman. (He was) two-time Trico League MVP, all-state as a senior and the all-time leading scorer in Ilwaco history.” Which game is circled on your schedule? “The first one against Naselle. It should be a good indicator of just what we are up against this season.” Which unheralded player should Fishermen fans keep an eye on? “Clark Wilson could have a breakout-type season, depending on the play of the players around him. (He has) size, speed and outside shooting touch. Ross Kukula, if he can shake off the leg injuries that have sidelined him the past two seasons. (He has) good quickness to the basket.” How does this year’s team compare to last year’s squad? “There is no question that our team faces some serious challenges this year. Last year’s team had MVP point guard Karl Oman as the unquestioned leader of a starting group of seniors that averaged 6-foot-2. This year’s team has virtually no size and very little experience. Last season, Ryan Tapio had a wrist injury and Ross Kukula missed all but four games with a leg injury. We will be very small and raw. Two of our potential top-six players didn’t even turn out last year. We have already lost four players to injury or medical problems in the first week, leaving our total numbers for both JV and varsity at 16.” What is the first item on your team-goals checklist? What is the last item? “Our first goal should be to make the playoffs, of course. Realistically, we hope to finish fifth or sixth to have a chance at a playoff game for district. That means beating at least three teams twice, and hoping to steal a couple at home from the top four. Our last goal is simply to be competitive, and try to win as many games as possible. The Trico league should have four really tough teams this year, so finishing at the top of the bottom four would be our priority.”

From left, Toutle Lake’s Anthony Heintzman, Mark Morris’ Rem Bakamus and Will Dolan of Castle Rock are leading senior contenders for Daily News Player of the Year honors.

First team Rem Bakamus, sr., Mark Morris Brad Tripp, sr., Rainier Anthony Heintzman, sr., Toutle Lake Brennan Rakoz, jr., Toledo Will Dolan, sr., Castle Rock n Rem Bakamus, senior, Mark Morris Bakamus enters his final campaign as a Monarch with possibly more desire for redemption than his father, MM coach Bill Bakamus. The Monarchs broke a streak of 11 consecutive state tournament seasons last year after failing to advance through the Southwest 2A District tournament, and Bakamus will refuse to let that happen again. He’s already been instrumental in early-season victories over W.F. West and Tumwater, the two squads that vanquished the Monarchs in districts last season. 42

n Brad Tripp, senior, Rainier Tripp plays basketball just as fast and just as hard as he plays linebacker. Defenders better be absolutely sure both feet are set to take that charge, because Tripp is going straight to the hoop. The senior, an all-state honorable mention selection in Oregon last season, is absolutely lethal on the fast break, where he often finds himself on the receiving end of a Marshall Dean dime under the hoop for an easy bucket.

Second team Tanner Brill, jr., Mark Morris Zack Hayes, sr., Toutle Lake Jesse Wallace, sr., Toledo Ross Kukula, sr., Ilwaco Aaron Adams, jr., Kelso n Anthony Heintzman, senior, Toutle Lake The 6-foot-3 Heintzman will be a key player in the Ducks’ push to return to the state tournament. The senior post was TL’s only selection to the Central 2B League first-team last season, although that distinction could find its way to more Ducks this year. Heintzman has a diversified skill set on the court, and the guts to match — just see his step-back three-pointer to beat Toledo in the first game of the season.

n Brennan Rakoz, junior, Toledo Rakoz is ready to break out in his junior season. The 6-foot-5 post player got some seasoning last year as part of Toledo’s district title run, but the 2011-12 season is his time to shine. Rakoz went for 19 points in the Indians’ season-opening loss to Toutle Lake, and will be a tough matchup down low for just about any team Toledo faces this year.

n Will Dolan, senior, Castle Rock Dolan was a second-team all-area selection by The Daily News at the end of last season, but he’s ready for a bump up to the first squad. The 6-foot-2 guard is simply a scoring machine. Dolan led the Rockets with 185 points in the regular season last year, more than a third of the team’s offensive production. With the team’s second-leading scorer, Brad Williamson, gone to graduation, the onus is on Dolan more than ever to captain the Rockets.

From left, Kelso’s Natasha Marith, Rainier’s Kaylea Knox and Teauna Hughes of Clatskanie are leading senior contenders for Daily News Player of the Year honors.

First team Maddi Seidl, jr., Castle Rock Kourtney Eaton, fr., Mark Morris Natasha Marith, sr., Kelso Kaylea Knox, sr., Rainier Teauna Hughes, sr., Clatskanie n Maddi Seidl, junior, Castle Rock Seidl does a little bit of everything for the Rockets. She was a first-team all-area selection by TDN last year as a sophomore, a nice honor to go along with her second-team all-league selection by Trico coaches. She can score and she can pass, but where she really makes her living is on the boards. She set a school record last year with 33 rebounds against Kalama.

n Kourtney Eaton, freshman, Mark Morris There are many reasons for the Monarchs to make major strides this season. Seasoning is one of them, as MM returns a virtual carbon copy of last year’s team. But a major reason is the arrival of Eaton. (And let’s not forget her twin sister, Karley.) Eaton has shown incredibly poise and talent for a freshman, and is especially dangerous driving to the hoop. She may score on those drives, but she also has the wherewithal to dump off to the open player — and that’s exactly how MM did its damage when recording a school-record 85 points against Tumwater.

Second team Emily Smith, sr., Woodland Carley Kitzman, sr., Naselle Macee Utecht, jr., Castle Rock Tayler Blackman, jr., Mark Morris Taylor McCullough, sr., Woodland n Teauna Hughes, senior, Clatskanie Hughes was an instrumental performer in leading the Tigers to the state quarterfinals last year under first-year head coach Renee Wells. With KayLee Taylor graduated, it will be the ‘Teauna Hughes Show’ in Clatskanie (although Holly Burghardt might have something to say about that). The senior’s been dealing with a knee injury early in the season, but managed to play eight minutes against Colton. Her line for that quarter of play — nine points, six rebounds, two steals.

n Natasha Marith, senior, Kelso Marith returns for her senior campaign at the Kelso point, and the Lassies are lucky to have her. Marith can score, defend and pass with equal efficiency, and along with varsity carry-overs Taylor Pritchett and Sierra Richards, she’ll be charged with keeping the Lassies in the hunt for a spot in the Southwest 3A District tournament and beyond. She’ll be up to the task.

n Kaylea Knox, senior, Rainier Knox is the niece of her head coach, Doug Knox, but it’s not any kind of nepotism that keeps her on the court. If anything, Doug is the coach at her will, not the other way around. Simply put, Knox has ice water in her veins. She’s already gone for 32 points in a game this season, and propelled Rainier to a triple-overtime win over Clatskanie last year, seemingly on her last-second shots alone.
