Toutle Lake High School senior Shelby Wason has excelled at both school and sports, despite suffering a significant hearing loss when she was a toddler. She plans to attend college to study science after her graduation.
Setting the tone W
hen Shelby Wason was a little girl, she sat as close to the television as possible to watch cartoons. Her parents, Brian and Julie Wason, thought her eyesight was bad. It wasn’t until they had their daughter tested that they discovered a bout with chicken pox at age 2 left the youngster half the normal hearing in each of her ears. “I got hearing aids before I started kindergarten, and I’ve had them ever since,” said Shelby, who will graduate from Toutle Lake High School this year as valedictorian with a 3.993 grade-point average. Shelby and her parents, Bryan and Julie Wason of Toutle, moved to the small community when the girl was in fourth grade. She started going to school at Castle Rock, but transferred to Toutle in the ninth grade. She experienced some teasing because of her disability while in elementary school, Shelby said. “It was kind of like being picked on for wearing glasses, I had the same kind of teasing,” she said. The teasing gradually lessened and today her hearing loss has little impact on her social life, she said. Most of the time, people don’t even realize she’s wearing the devices. “I volunteer at the VFW, and a lot of the people there were surprised when they found out that I wear hearing aids,” she said. “If I wear my hair down, people don’t usually notice.” When she pulls her hair back to play basketball on the high school varsity team, players and spectators can then see them.
