hysics and the love of science is in Haley White’s genetics. Her grandfather, the late Jim White, studied physics. In addition, his enthusiasm for outer space and the stars rubbed off on Haley. “He was really into ‘Star Trek’ and studying the universe,” she said. The soon-to-be Kelso High School graduate is basing her career path around that love. She has been accepted to the University of California at Berkeley where she will enter the physics program with the goal of becoming an astrophysicist. Haley, a 4.0 student, and daughter of Michelle and Mike White of Rose Valley, is prepping for her studies by taking advanced placement classes at Kelso, including chemistry and calculus. Preparing herself for a lifelong journey of learning, she performs a lot of independent research. “If I’m curious about something, I look it up,” she said. Besides her grandfather sharing his interest with her, Haley said she enjoyed watching television shows about science when she was a child. “I started watching shows like ‘How the Universe Works’ ... I have always been interested in it,” she said.
