LATSKANIE — With baseball, school studies and the landscaping business he started this year, Clatskanie’s German George has a full plate. And that’s just a preview of the action-packed life German has planned. The teen, who graduates in June with with a 3.9 grade-point average, heads to the Oregon Technical Institute in Klamath Falls next year where he will study medical imaging. He wants to be an ultrasound technician. He also will play baseball at the school. “I pitched a bullpen for their coach a couple of months ago,” German said. The coach, Matthew Miles, told German he doesn’t normally provide scholarships to first-year students, but offered him some money to play. “He said that whatever I can’t cover in scholarships, they will cover,” German said. He said he feels pretty good about the money he has coming in for college. He will receive a Pell Grant as well as roughly $36,000 in other scholarships.

German said. “My mom called him on the day I was born and said, ‘You have a son,’ and he said, ‘No, I don’t.’ ” His mother tried to raise German on her own. “My grandma was a huge help. She put her (German’s mother) in an apartment over in Longview and helped her out a huge amount,” German said. Lisa Cox ended up taking partial custody of the child when he was 14 months old. She was granted full custody when he was 6 years old. “People have said it’s amazing how well he has done,” Lisa said. “But I got him so young. I raised him like I raised my other three.” Under the tutelage of his grandparents, German blossomed. His love of baseball, which he said began as soon as he could walk, is something he shares with his

grandfather. “He’s still playing baseball. He’s 57 years old, and he’s playing in old-man leagues and stuff,” German said. German credits his grandparents with his determined outlook. “They taught me how to be the right kind of person,” he said. He uses an example of a time he went to a party in his junior year. The next day, he told his grandparents he attended the party and that he had been drinking. “They said, ‘Well, you have to tell your coach,’ ” he said. “Most parents wouldn’t have done that. They would have brushed it under the rug and said don’t do it again.” German told his coach, who then informed him he needed to tell the school’s athletic director — who also happened to be the baseball coach. “I had to deal with those con-

sequences,” he said. “The biggest thing they (his grandparents) taught me is that for every action, there is a consequence. You have to be knowledgeable on what it is before you take the risk.” He said they also impressed upon him the importance of keeping his word and being honest, which is something he incorporated into his landscaping business. His grandmother said she is proud of his determination and marvels at his energy. “He’s got a full plate, doesn’t he?” she said, chuckling, adding he has their full confidence. “He’s got the determination,” Lisa said. “And if anyone can do it, he can.” Contact Daily News reporter Brenda McCorkle at 360-577-2515 or bmccorkle@ tdn.com.

‌ORLANDO — Candace Rodriguez stumbled upon the perfect gold-colored dress for her daughter in an area shopping plaza. Little GiaBella Rodriguez twirled in the outfit that swished when she moved and gently touched the sequins on the bow while her mother watched. Rodriguez was savoring those moments recently as she prepared to graduate with about 7,500 UCF students during three days of commencement festivities. In the past, Rodriguez has dealt with pain and loss. Now she can celebrate. She hung her graduation gown by the front door to remind herself that the day was coming. “She’s had a lot of unexpected, sad things happen,” said Rodriguez’s mother, Claire Bossier. “It’s amazing she is graduating. She didn’t give up.” Rodriguez wore black, her daughter that hard-to-come-by gold dress, her teenage son a UCF tie. UCF’s colors are black and gold. In her youth, college seemed impossible. It’s hard to think that far ahead when sentences get fumbled and the numbers switched in her brain during high school. “People just labeled me as lazy,” Rodriguez said. She wasn’t. She was dyslexic. She grew up in Orlando in a working-class family. Her parents

While she was gone, her parents baby-sat and cooked dinner in the house they shared. Her brother acted like a surrogate parent, coaching P.J.’s football team or escorting on school field trips. Across campus, about 12,000 — roughly 20 percent of the student body — are the first in their families to attend college. A ceremony before the official graduation honored them for fighting long odds and reaching this far, said Wayne Jackson, director of UCF Multicultural Academic and Support Services.
