Cancer death rate posts biggest one-year drop ever By Laurie McGinley The Washington Post The cancer death rate in the United States fell 2.2% in 2017 — the biggest single-year drop ever reported — propelled by gains against lung cancer, the American Cancer Society said Wednesday. Declines in the mortality rate for lung cancer have accelerated in recent years in response to new treatments and falling smoking rates, said Rebecca Siegel, lead author of Cancer Statistics 2020, the latest edition of the organization’s annual report on cancer trends. The improvement in 2017, the most recent year for which data is available, is part of a long-term drop in cancer mortality that reflects, to a large extent, the smoking downturn. Since peaking in
1991, the cancer death rate has fallen 29%, which translates into 2.9 million fewer deaths. Norman “Ned” Sharpless, director of the National Cancer Institute, which was not involved in the report, said the data reinforces that “we are making steady progress” on cancer. For lung cancer, he pointed to new immunotherapy treatments and so-called targeted therapies that stop the action of molecules key to cancer growth. He predicted that the mortality rate would continue to fall “as we get better at using these therapies.” Multiple clinical trials are exploring how to combine the new approaches with older ones, such as chemotherapy. Sharpless expressed concern, however, that progress against cancer would be undermined by increased obe-
sity, which is a risk factor for several malignancies. The cancer society report projected 1.8 million new cases of cancer in the United States this year and more than 606,000 deaths. Nationally, cancer is the second-leading cause of death after heart disease in both men and women. It is the No. 1 cause in many states, and among Hispanic and Asian Americans and people younger than 80, the report said. The cancer death rate is defined as deaths per 100,000 people. The cancer society has been reporting the rate since 1930. Because lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, accounting for 1 in 4, any change in the mortality rate has a large effect on the overall cancer death rate, Sie-

gel noted. She described the gains against lung cancer, and against another often deadly cancer, melanoma, as “exciting.” But, she added, “the news this year is mixed” because of slower progress against colorectal, breast and prostate cancers. Those cancers often can be detected early by screening, she said. The report said substantial racial and geographic disparities remain for highly preventable cancers, such as cervical cancer, and called for “the equitable application” of cancer control measures. The five-year survival rate for all cancers diagnosed from 2009 through 2015 was 67% overall — 68% for whites and 62% for African Americans. In recent years, melanoma has showed the biggest mor-
tality-rate drop of any cancer. That’s largely a result of breakthrough treatments such as immunotherapy, which unleashes the patient’s own immune system to fight the cancer and was approved for advanced melanoma in 2011. The one-year survival rate for patients with advanced melanoma rose from 42% in the 2008-2010 period to 55% between 2013 and 2015, according to the report. Also striking, Siegel said: Among those 65 and older, the melanoma death rate has been dropping 5% to 6% annually in recent years after decades of increases. Meanwhile, lung cancer death rates have dropped by 51% since 1990 in men, and

Frostbite is a serious cold weather risk By UNMC, Central States Center for Agricultural Safety and Health, Omaha, Neb. When temperatures drop below 30 degrees (Fahrenheit), farmers, ranchers and anyone working outside are at risk to incur frostbite, trench foot and/or chilblains. This is especially true when cold is combined with wind. Cold weather conditions are the most common cause of
frostbite, although direct contact with ice, frozen metal or very cold liquids can also lead to frostbite. Trench foot is a type of tissue damage brought on by prolonged exposure to cold and wet conditions. It leads to swelling, pain and sensory disturbances in the feet. Chilblains are the painful inflammation of small blood vessels in the skin that occur

To treat trench foot, remove shoes or boots and wet socks. Dry the feet. Avoid walking to reduce the risk of damage to foot tissue. Areas most susceptible to chilblains are the toes, fingers, ears, and nose. When chilblains occur, symptoms include redness, blistering, itching, inflammation and (in severe cases) ulceration. To treat chilblains, avoid scratching the affected area. Slowly warm the skin and use corticosteroid creams to relieve itching and swelling. If blisters and ulcers are present, they should be kept clean and covered. The most effective treatment for these cold-related illnesses is prevention, beginning with appropriate dress. “When you’re working outdoors, wear a minimum of three layers of clothing,” Yoder says. “An outer layer to break the wind, a middle layer to retain insulation and an inner layer that allows for ventilation. Have a change of clothes available in case your garments become wet.” Since alcohol and drugs can increase heat loss and impair

“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”
Six tips for condo buyers to consider By Michele Lerner Just 5% of all homes bought last year were condos, according to the 2019 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers by the National Association of Realtors. But in urban areas, condos continue to be a popular option for first-time buyers and empty-nesters, both of whom appreciate the low-maintenance lifestyle of condo ownership. Buying a condo requires a little more vigilance and thought than buying a single-family house. We asked a real estate agent and a lender for tips that condo buyers should consider: ► Expect extra fees. Condos come with additional fees. One
of the largest expenses, in addition to your mortgage, will be your condo association dues. Jen Horner, a real estate agent with Re/ Max Masters in Salt Lake City, suggests in an email that condo purchasers find out how much you will pay in monthly condo dues and what the fees cover within the community. Do these fees seem reasonable in return for the maintenance and amenities that are offered? “Condo fees generally cover the maintenance of the common areas, utilities such as sewer and trash, security and external building maintenance,” Shelby McDaniels, channel director for corporate home lend-
ing at JPMorgan Chase, writes in an email. “In addition, whether the fees are paid monthly or annually, you will still be required to pay property taxes and need to carry homeowner’s insurance to cover your contents and your internal structure.” ► Check on the condo association’s reserve funds. If the association doesn’t have enough reserves, it is not uncommon for condo communities to issue a special assessment for emergencies and/or much needed capital improvements, Horner writes. ► Mortgages for condos may involve some additional steps. For condos, the condo association/complex
must also be approved for a full loan approval to be issued, McDaniels writes. This may require additional paperwork, approval from the condo association and even some additional costs paid before closing. ► You may need to make a bigger down payment or have extra cash in the bank. “Lenders sometimes have extra requirements for condo buyers,” McDaniels writes. “You’ll want to ensure you have a budget that will be able to accommodate it. Given these considerations, getting preapproved will be a critical step in the condo-buying process. Once you’ve been preapproved, you can shop confidently using your
budget as a guideline.” ► Condo ownership comes with rules. It’s important that you understand what your unique responsibilities are to the overall community and what rules the condo association has in place, McDaniels writes. “For example, if you are a pet owner you will want to ensure pets are welcome before you decide on a specific condo complex,” McDaniels writes. ► Think about the best placement of your condo within the community. If you’re looking at a high-rise condo, decide if you prefer first-, middleor top-floor living, Horner writes. “Top floor condos are typically considered the
best location in regard to noise reduction, isolation from neighbors, safety and better views,” she writes. “However, how many floors up will you be traveling? Are there only stairs or is an elevator available within the building? Middle-floor living may allow you to minimize your heating bills by being sandwiched between the bottom and top floors. However, if the sound barrier is weak, noise from above and below could be an issue.” Consulting a real estate agent and a lender with condo experience can help you make an informed choice about the building and the individual unit.
Record number of minority officials on Super Bowl crew By Mark Maske The Washington Post At a time when NFL leaders are dealing with the fallout of a hiring cycle for coaches in which only one minority head coach was hired, the league will have its largest number of minority officials ever on a Super Bowl officiating crew. Five African American officials are part of the NFL’s seven-member on-field officiating crew for the Super Bowl. “Super Bowl officials are selected among their peers for excelling at every one of the stringent criteria as met on every play in every game throughout the season,” Troy Vincent, the NFL’s exec-
utive vice president of football operations, said in a written statement to The Washington Post. “The diversity of this Super Bowl officiating team is a testimony to those who far exceed the on-field leadership and excellence commensurate with the performance demands of the most significant game of the year for coaches, players and fans.” The five African American officials on the Super Bowl crew are field judge Michael Banks, line judge Carl Johnson, umpire Barry Anderson, back judge Greg Steed and side judge Boris Cheek. Super Bowl assignments are made after the NFL grades officials

on their regular season performances. Postseason officiating experience also is a factor in the Super Bowl assignments. The Super Bowl officials generally have worked a game earlier during the playoffs but not the conference championship games. Banks is in his 18th NFL season and this will be his fourth Super Bowl assignment, including two as an alternate. Johnson is in his 19th NFL season. He returned to on-field officiating work after a stint as the NFL’s vice president of officiating and became the league’s first full-time on-field official in 2013. This is his second Super Bowl. Anderson is in his 13th NFL season and he
had one previous Super Bowl assignment as an alternate. Steed, in his 17th NFL season, gets his fourth Super Bowl assignment, including two as an alternate. For Cheek, this is his 24th NFL season and his third Super Bowl. Bill Vinovich will be the referee, the head of the officiating crew, for the Feb. 2 game in Miami between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers. Kent Payne will be the down judge. The eighth member of the crew, not on the field, is replay official Mike Chase. The record number of minority officials working in the Super Bowl comes with the league under intense
scrutiny and criticism after a hiring cycle in which only one of the five new head coaches hired league wide, the Washington Redskins’ Ron Rivera, is a minority. Only four of the 32 NFL teams have minority head coaches: Rivera in Washington, Mike Tomlin with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Anthony Lynn with the Los Angeles Chargers and Brian Flores with the Miami Dolphins. The Fritz Pollard Alliance, the diversity group that works closely with the NFL on its minority hiring, criticized the league for its “abysmal record of hiring people of color in high ranking levels of NFL management,” and said the league
and team owners must take tangible steps to address what it called “a flawed system.” Steelers owner Art Rooney told the NFL Network that the league is “not where we want to be” with its minority hiring and must reexamine its practices. He said the NFL might consider extending its minority interviewing rule to cover coordinator positions. That rule, which requires each team with a head coaching vacancy to interview at least one minority candidate, is called the Rooney Rule for Art’s late father Dan, the former Steelers owner who was the chairman of the NFL’s workplace diversity committee.
