A temporary measure By Natalie B. Compton The Washington Post In the wake of the coronavirus’ spread, airlines are temporarily modifying amenities on flights coming from mainland China, hoping to cut down on potentially infectious interactions between passengers and cabin crew members. Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways and Taiwan’s China Airlines, along with its carriers Mandarin Airlines and Tigerair Taiwan, are among the carriers implementing changes in response to the outbreak, as first reported by Reuters. Since Monday, Taiwan’s China Airlines and Mandarin Airlines will reportedly no longer distribute hot meals, cloth napkins, blankets, pillows, towels, magazines and newspapers on flights between Taiwan, mainland China and

Hong Kong. Passengers may get drinks and disposable headphones on request. Tigerair Taiwan has halted dutyfree services and removed all items from seat back pockets except the safety information and sick bag. China Airlines has not responded to The Washington Post’s request for comment. On Wednesday, Cathay Pacific Airways announced it would take similar precautions, temporarily changing in-flight services on all Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon flights traveling to and from mainland China. The carrier is no longer providing blankets, magazines and hot towels on flights traveling between mainland China, or offering in-flight duty-free sales. It is also altering its meal service for first- and business-class cabins, and ending trolley services. In economy cabins,

passengers on medium- to long-duration mainland China flights will be served a disposable snack bag. “This modified service offering is strictly a temporary measure designed to further strengthen our health and safety protocols in light of the evolving situation regarding coronavirus cases in mainland China,” Cathay Pacific Group said in a statement. “We are monitoring the situation closely and will continue to coordinate with the health authorities in Hong Kong and in all the ports to which we operate flights.” On Thursday, the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus outbreak a global public health emergency. The virus has now infected nearly 10,000 people and killed more than 200. In response, the United States has issued its highest level

of travel advisory for China. Twenty ports of entry airports across the country are expanding screening for the new strain of coronavirus, and dozens of carriers including Delta Air Lines and American Airlines are halting all flights to mainland China. For those traveling by plane, it’s not clear whether measures like avoiding hot meals or blankets are useful for avoiding infection, because information about the new coronavirus strain is evolving. “There are many, things about this virus that we don’t know for sure yet, so does it make sense for them to restrict serving these things?” says Lin Chen, a medical doctor and director of the Travel Medical Center at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “Some of it might make sense, [but] some of it,

who knows. We don’t have great data, which is the difficult part.” As health officials work to understand the virus, Chen recommends proper hand-washing, especially after touching common surfaces, as the best prevention technique, and avoiding touching your face. Although Chen does not advise against wearing a face mask as a precaution while flying, she believes it may give people a false sense of security. “Public health authorities have not recommended the general public to wear masks on airplanes,” says Chen, who is also an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. But for those who would like that additional step, Chen suggests using a surgical N95 respirator.

for the Eastern District of Virginia about the incident on Jan. 7. In a statement issued Wednesday, NOAA spokesman Brady Phillips rejected the assertion that the federal agency had hidden the incident from the salvage company, pointing out there was an RMST observer on board the ship for the expedition who “knew of the incident and failed to report it” to RMST. RMST said in its court filing that when it learned of the incident two weeks ago and asked the RMST observer why he didn’t tell them about it, he told them he’d believed he couldn’t because of the terms of a confidentiality agreement.

It was unclear who the confidentiality agreement was with. NOAA’s spokesman said Wednesday that in the current legal battle, RMST is seeking permission from the court to “cut open the hull and extract artifacts from the ship,” which the agency opposes. Previously, salvagers have only been permitted to collect items from a debris field near the shipwreck, not from inside it. RMST wants remove a Marconi wireless telegraph transmitter from a “soundproof room” that has remained untouched for 108 years. The natural decay of the wreck indicates the ceiling could collapse within a year, forever burying the radio, RMST told The Telegraph.

The wireless was used to send distress calls in the early hours of April 15, 1912, after the Titanic hit an iceberg. At the time it was state-of-the-art technology, as The Washington Post’s Brittany Shammas previously reported. “Come at once. We have struck a berg. It’s a CQD [SOS], old man,” the senior wireless operator Jack Phillips transmitted to a nearby ship after the collision. Then: “We are putting passengers off in small boats. Women and children in boats. Cannot last much longer. Losing power.” The last message was: “Come quick. Engine room nearly full.” Phillips died on the Titanic along with more than 1,500 others.

Even as a kid, Rosa Parks stood up for justice By Marylou Tousignant The Washington Post Long before Rosa Parks rode her way into the history books, as the African American woman who refused in 1955 to give up her bus seat to a white man in Montgomery, Alabama, she was a fighter for justice. More than 30 years earlier, when Rosa was about 10 years old, a bullying white boy threatened to punch her. “I picked up a brick and dared him to hit me,” she said later. “He thought the better of it and went away.” An even earlier memory was of her grandfather keeping watch at night to protect his family and home from an attack by violent racists known as the Ku Klux Klan. “The doors and windows were

boarded and nailed tight from the inside,” she wrote, and her grandfather kept his shotgun close at hand. These childhood experiences eventually led Parks, who was born Feb. 4, 1913, to devote her life to gaining equal rights for black people and others suffering injustices. Her story is now being retold in a one-room exhibit at the Library of Congress. Titled “Rosa Parks: In Her Own Words,” the exhibit displays 90 items. They include photos, videos, pages of handwritten notes and awards Parks received, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Although her activism spanned many decades, it was her arrest for not moving to the back of the bus that day in 1955 for which Parks is most

remembered. It resulted in a year-long refusal by black people to ride Montgomery buses (an action called a “boycott”) and a court case challenging the city’s law requiring separate seating for black and white riders. Racial segregation in public buses was ruled unconstitutional nationwide in 1956, two years after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down racial segregation in public schools. Both were important steps in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and ’60s. Parks was taught by her grandfather “never to accept mistreatment,” advice she took to heart. Of her bus protest, she wrote: “I had been pushed around all my life and felt at this moment that I couldn’t take it anymore.” When

she asked the arresting officer “why we had to be pushed around, he said he didn’t know. ‘The law is the law. You are under arrest.’” In a book she wrote for kids, Parks said: “I had no idea ... that my small action would help put an end to segregation laws in the South.” But fame came at a price. She and her husband lost their jobs, endured death threats and lived

in poverty for years. But through her example, “she helped change the country,” Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden said. The library’s exhibit may be “sort of heavy” for some kids, said Brett Zongker, a media specialist at the Library of Congress. “But it was her experience.” And he noted that Parks “was all about children, motivating them to achieve

their highest potential.” The exhibit includes some of the 500-plus cards and notes kids sent her.

It’s more than a career search.

It’s your future.

Justice accuses US firms in robocall crackdown By Matt Zapotosky The Washington Post The Justice Department on Tuesday asked a federal court for restraining orders against three home-based operators of telecommunications companies who, authorities allege, patched hundreds of millions of foreign-based robocalls into the United States. In what officials described as a first-of-its-kind action, the department asked a federal court to block the companies and those who run them from carrying the fraudulent calls, alleging that they were essentially co-conspirators in a scheme to defraud those who picked up the phone. The companies, Justice Department officials said, had been warned that the calls they were transmitting — most of which originated in India and lasted less than a second because the recipients hung up — were fraudulent, but did so anyway.

NEW BOBCATS

The result, officials said, was that fraudsters were able to swipe hundreds of millions of dollars by posing as government officials or employees of trusted businesses and threatening arrest or other financial harm to mostly elderly victims who responded on the phone. “Not only are the calls an annoyance, but for elderly and vulnerable Americans, they are a serious problem,” Assistant Attorney General Jody Hunt said in a press call to announce the action. Robocalls have surged in recent months — sparking Congress late last year to pass legislation that it hopes will cut down on the irritating interruptions and prevent fraud. Hunt said the Justice Department’s move Tuesday should “serve as a warning” to other telecommunications companies that they could be in federal authorities’ crosshairs if they do not do their part to crack down on possible

fraud. The department filed two civil cases in federal court in Brooklyn. One is against Nicholas Palumbo, 38, and Natasha Palumbo, 33, of Scottsdale, Arizona, who ran TollFreeDeals.com and sipretail.com. The other is against Jon Kahen, 45, of Great Neck, New York, who ran Global Voicecom Inc., Global Telecommunication Services Inc., KAT Telecom Inc. None of the three people returned messages seeking comment. A federal judge in Brooklyn on Tuesday afternoon issued a temporary restraining order against Kahen and his companies. “They are the link between scammers and consumers,” Social Security Administration Inspector General Gail Ennis said. Authorities alleged Kahen and the Palumbos operated what are known as “voice over internet protocol carriers,” which use an Internet connection rather than

a copper phone line to carry telephone calls and pass foreign calls into the U.S. They operated out of their homes, officials said, and needed relatively few resources. But they were still able to carry hundreds of millions of calls, officials asserted. Those who did not hang up were then met with alarming — though fake — messages, such as that their social security numbers had been compromised, their assets were being frozen or they faced imminent arrest and needed to pay large sums of money to get out of trouble, authorities said. Neither the companies nor the people named in the civil filings were charged with any crimes, though the Justice Department asserted in court documents there were part of wire fraud schemes. Hunt, who runs the Justice Department’s Civil Division, said the restraining orders would “stop the fraudulent conduct immediately,” but that the Justice Depart-

Facebook to remove fake coronavirus info By Tony Romm The Washington Post Facebook will remove posts, photos and videos that peddle harmful misinformation about the coronavirus, the company announced Thursday, seeking to crack down on a wave of content pitching false cures to the fast-spreading global health crisis. The social-networking giant said in a blog post its new efforts, building off its policies that prohibit users from causing realworld harm, would result in the removal of dangerous claims, such as those that suggest drinking bleach cures the coronavirus, as well as hashtags that promote falsehoods on its photo-sharing site Instagram. Facebook said it would base its decisions off advice from “leading global health organizations and local health authorities.” It’s a rare move for the company, which often labels and

demotes false content as opposed to removing it — an approach that in the past has prompted criticism from health experts. In doing so, Facebook also said it would start steering users to more authoritative sources of information from the World Health Organization. Facebook also said it had provided free advertising credits to help organizations run coronavirus education campaigns. “As the global public health community works to keep people safe, Facebook is supporting their work in several ways, most especially by working to limit the spread of misinformation and harmful content about the virus and connecting people to helpful information,” said Kang-Xing Jin, Facebook’s head of health, in the post. Protect your home (and more) from winter’s freeze

F

reezing temperatures may be good for ice skating or building snowmen, but sub-freezing temperatures can be dangerous for the average person and his or her home. Cold weather often leaves people scurrying to do whatever is necessary to safeguard themselves from the big chill. But it’s important homeowners also protect their homes in cold weather.

Plumbing

Plumbing and pipes may be vulnerable to cold weather. Frozen pipes may burst and cause substantial damage to a home, potentially causing flooding and structural damage. Homeowners should disconnect and drain garden hoses before winter arrives. Water to outdoor hose bibs should be turned off, though the valves on these outdoor faucets should be left open to drain. Also, outdoor faucets can be covered with insulating foam covers.

The Red Cross says pipes that freeze most frequently include pipes in unheated areas, such as basements, attics, garages, and crawl spaces. Close vents to the outside in areas like attics and basements to limit the amount of cold air that gets indoors. Think about insulating unheated areas, as well as using pipe sleeves, heat tape or wraps on exposed pipes. By opening kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors, homeowners can allow warm air from a home to reach pipes under the sink. During extreme freezes, keep cold water dripping from a sink to prevent pipes from freezing.

Service HVAC systems

It’s important to ensure that heating systems are working properly prior to the cold-weather season. It may only take hours for the interior of a home to reach dangerously low temperatures without adequate heat. Homeowners should schedule annual

checkups of furnaces and hot water heaters. Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, install a clean air filter and make sure all thermostats are working properly.

Have fuel ready

Homeowners who heat their homes with oil, wood or coal should make sure they have plenty of fuel on hand in advance of winter. Shortages can occur, and it may take some time for new fuel to arrive in the midst of a cold snap. As a precaution, homeowners can rely on portable space heaters to fill in the heating gaps during freezing temperatures. Exercise extreme caution with these devices, turning them off when leaving the room and remembering to avoid overloading outlets.

Protect outside

Drain birdbaths, clean out downspouts and remove water from other items where water

can freeze and cause damage. Inspect roofing prior to the snowy season, but stay off roofs during freezing weather. Remove snow shovels and other winter gear from storage and make sure the items are easily accessible during snowstorms. Winter’s bite can be severe. Homeowners can protect themselves and their properties when the freeze sets in.

Macy’s locations also tend to have brightly lit entrances and sprawling parking lots that draw people in. The loss of a major anchor store, analysts say, is likely to reverberate throughout the industry. Mall staples like Gap, J Crew and Victoria’s Secret, which already are facing sales declines and dwindling foot traffic, will likely be hard hit, as are nearby kiosk-operators and food courts.

this year as retailers like Express, Pier 1 and Papyrus follow through with planned store closures. Macy’s latest announcement is a major blow to workers. The loss of a single department store, they said, can easily affect 150 or more employees. Multiply that by 125, and more than 18,000 jobs could be on the line.

of the region’s largest employers. “It is very disappointing for the City of Cincinnati,” Council Member Amy Murray told local news station Fox 19. “Macy’s has been a good corporate partner through the years, and though we understand their decision, obviously (we) wish that they were staying here for the long term.”

Newspapers

Macy’s is one of the top sources of advertising revenue for newspapers across the country, and analysts say widespread store closures and cost-cutting efforts will likely cause a further pullback on print ads. The company is already scaling back: Politico reported in 2016 that Macy’s had cut about half of its newspaper advertising, leaving newspapers with $100 million in lost revenue. “Depending on the market, a publisher would see a drop of as much as $900,000 ... the equivalent of at least 10 newsroom jobs,” Politico reported.

Impeachment, wow! A study of the exclamation running wild on Twitter By Katie Shepherd The Washington Post “Wow.” “WOW.” “Just wow.” The word has the ring of modern slang. But it dates to at least the early 16th century, when it first appeared in Scottish writing. It’s found in 1791, used by Scottish poet Robert Burns in “Tam O’Shanter,” as in: “She ventur’d forward on the light; And wow! Tam saw an unco sight!” And there it is in the Annals of the First U.S. Congress: “Wow, this shows that Congress are not at liberty to make any alteration by law in the mode of appointing superior officers ...” It had a renaissance in the 1920s and is having another in the era of Twitter. It is there that future linguists may someday find it reached a new zenith, at least in politics, during the impeachment proceedings against President Trump. So, what is the meaning of “wow?” Geoffrey Nunberg, a linguist at the University of California at Berkeley’s

School of Information, said wow basically means, “Oh, really?” “Wow,” Wall Street Journal reporter Lindsay Wise said on Twitter. “Rand Paul submitted a question, reportedly naming the whistleblower. Chief Justice Roberts read it and said, ‘The presiding officer declines to read the question as written.’” “Wow. Trump defense lawyer discussing how the Wall is being built as defense against impeachment,” the New Yorker’s Susan Glasser tweeted. “Wow. Joe Biden argued against the Senate calling witnesses in 1999 impeachment memo,” Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., said. “Wow” seems apt for the impeachment of Trump, who frequently employs the word. Since 2012, the Trump Twitter Archive has recorded about 445 tweets by the president that use the word. Trump uses it to express outrage. He uses it to mock Democrats. He uses it to brag, as in “Wow, a blowout jobs number just out.”

Wow is truly bipartisan. When Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais mocked left-leaning celebrities who use award season to lecture the nation on politics, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, reacted with a “Wow. “ Amid the polarizing trial, wow was one of the only things Republicans and Democrats agreed on. And, wow, why not? Its meaning can be applied to reflect any view. Nunberg said it is a “versatile phrase that can be positive or negative, self-ironizing (‘wow, awkward’) or sarcastic (‘oh, wow, I’m shocked!’), which is how it’s often used on Twitter to express mock astonishment at the effrontery or self-regard of someone else.” “Wow is the ejaculation we use to express pure astonishment,” said linguist Nunberg. Republicans use “wow” to make Democrats look bad, and vice versa, Nunberg said. Politicians are signaling to supporters that their political enemies’ arguments are so off-base, they’re unbelievable.

t r a e h t Swee ngs Savi

“It involves some kind of unmitigated chutzpah,” he added. Actor Owen Wilson has used the word so many times, he’s become a “legend” for it. One fan on YouTube compiled every clip of Wilson saying “wow” 102 times in his movies into a 5½-minute-long video. On Twitter, a fan joked that the “Wedding Crashers” star had made more than $100,000 saying “wow” in his movies. Intellectuals like the word, as well as young fans of K-pop who are frequently wowed by their favorite singers. After an incensed reader authored a lengthy rebuttal to Joan Didion’s review of Woody Allen’s “Manhattan” in

the New York Review of Books, Didion responded with a simple, cutting “Oh, wow.” “It’s been a maneuver for some time now,” Nunberg said, “To suggest that something defies belief, it’s so astonishing as to merit remark.” “Wow” can also be a sarcastic rejoinder, as demonstrated frequently by historian and prominent Trump critic Kevin Kruse, who teaches at Princeton University. In the past two weeks alone, Kruse has used the word to mockingly praise Republicans at least seven times, while actually undermining them. Using the word so often runs the risk of stripping the exclama-

tion of its meaning, a phenomenon called “semantic satiation.” Say “wow” over and over, and it will stop making sense. Because of that, it’s possible that the frequent use on social media might be short-lived. “Its roots in the language go back 500 years,” Nunberg said. “But it may have a more abbreviated run as a Twitter tic.” If that happens, you can turn to one of wow’s close cousins, like “whoa.”

What did police find Beer helps dog return in this bag marked to home in Minnesota ‘Bag Full of Drugs’? By Katie Shepherd The Washington Post

By Tom Jackman The Washington Post It started, as these stories often do, with a routine traffic stop. When a backup officer arrived, early on Saturday evening, he just happened to be a deputy with a drug-sniffing dog. The deputy K-9, “Prince,” smelled trouble. And as the police in Florida’s panhandle began examining the inside of the Kia sedan, they came across two bags helpfully marked, “Bag Full of Drugs.” It’s not exactly probable cause, but it’s a lead. And police say it led to a jackpot: 75 grams (2.6 ounces) of methamphetamine, more than a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of the date-rape drug GHB, 3.6 grams (0.12 ounces) of fentanyl, plus ecstasy, cocaine and assorted paraphernalia. The driver and passenger were both booked on multiple felony drug charges, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, with a hand from Prince of the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office. “They don’t always make it that easy for us,” said Lt. W. Robert Cannon of the Florida Highway Patrol of the clearly marked drug bags. “If it weren’t for the fact that we’re talking about date rape drugs, fentanyl, which we all know can be deadly, cocaine and the other drugs, it would be humorous.” Cannon said Trooper Marlon Boggan was on routine patrol, not targeting drugs or any other special assignment, when he started to run radar on Interstate 10 near Holt, Fla. Boggan reportedly clocked a Kia going 95 mph in a 70 mph zone, and pulled it over. Boggan asked for identification from both the driver and the passenger, Cannon said, and the passenger reportedly told the trooper, “I probably shouldn’t give this to you.” Boy was he right about that. Boggan ran the license and found

the passenger, Joshua M. Reinhardt, 34, of Orlando, had an outstanding felony warrant for probation violation on a grand theft conviction. But the trooper couldn’t just snatch Reinhardt. His dispatcher had to check with Orange County, Fla., to see if they would extradite the prisoner once he was arrested, Cannon said, or else he would be released. Reinhardt and the driver, Ian C. Simmons, 34, of Windermere, Fla., both started acting suspiciously, and Boggan had to kill time while his dispatcher checked on extradition, Cannon said. So Boggan called for backup, and a Santa Rosa County sheriff’s deputy arrived with Prince. The dog took a stroll around the Kia, Cannon said, and “alerted to narcotics in the vehicle.” Reinhardt and Simmons were removed from the Kia, and the officers found the car to be full of drugs. Well maybe not full, but carefully stashed throughout. “Every corner of the car had drugs in it,” Cannon said the trooper reported. Of the two bags labeled “Bag Full of Drugs,” one had suspected ecstasy and marijuana, while the other had plastic bags and paraphernalia, Cannon said. The estimated street value of the drugs was $15,450. Both men were handed four counts of felony and two counts of misdemeanor drug charges, and were being held in the Santa Rosa County jail on Tuesday night in lieu of $117,000 bond. A brief review of the Internet finds that a “Bag Full of Drugs” is available in both accessory pouch and tote sizes. “There’s nothing more fun than walking around town with your ironic bag full of drugs,” one vendor notes. The Santa Rosa sheriff’s office posted on its Facebook page: “Note to self - do not traffic your illegal narcotics in bags labeled ‘Bag Full Of Drugs.’ Our K-9s can read.” “Self,” sheriff? Now that’s ironic.

A smiling mutt has a four-pack of beer and a Facebook post to thank for finding her long lost family more than 1,000 miles away after going missing three years ago. One day in May 2017, the golden terrier mix had been on a leash in the yard of her home in Iowa. When Monica Mathis went outside to bring Hazel in, she was gone. “She was an escape artist,” Monica Mathis told WWSB. “She was very good at getting loose. Bolting right through the door. Knocking me over just to get out the door.” Mathis and her children drove around searching for their dog, who had been with them since she was a puppy, shouting Hazel’s name for hours. The family moved to Minnesota a month later, and gave up hope of finding their dog. “To be honest, I did not ever think I was going to find her again,” Mathis told the Tampa Bay Times. Meanwhile, Hazel headed south. No one knows how the dog traveled more than 1,000 miles to Manatee County, Florida, about 45 miles south of Tampa. She eventually arrived at the shelter run by Manatee County Animal Services last March.

“We would have never thought to go as far as Minnesota as a possible match,” said Hans Wohlgefahrt, the outreach and event specialist at Manatee County Animal Services. “We were sort of at a dead end.” Hazel, who the shelter called Day Day, had waited 10 months to be adopted from the animal shelter in Manatee County. When she arrived last March, shelter employees tried to call the number stored in the golden terrier mix’s microchip. But Mathis had changed her name after a divorce, the Times reported, and she never updated the microchip with a new phone number after she moved to Minnesota. The shelter gave up and started looking to find the dog a new home. To help her chances, the shelter partnered with Motorworks Brewing, a local brewery, to advertise dogs available for adoption. Day Day and three other smiling rescue pups graced the cans in a special fourpack promotional brew crafted by Motorworks. The beer cans were to earn publicity for the brewery and the local animal services division, which is raising money to build a new shelter. The ad campaign went viral, landing features on CNN, HuffPost, the New York

Post and even a segment on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” When one of those stories popped up in Mathis’ Facebook news feed on Jan. 24, she stopped scrolling. “This is my dog,” she wrote in a comment on Motorworks Brewing’s Facebook page. To prove it, she shared photos of the pup, which she called Hazel, from years ago that she saved in her Facebook albums. The shelter asked her to send veterinary records and photos to prove she had seen the correct dog. “I was a little hysterical because I was scared someone was going to adopt her at that point or something,” Mathis told WWSB. “I was scared I was gonna lose her again. I was really nervous. I was like shaking. I was crying.” Wohlgefahrt said she provided everything the shelter needed to prove the dog belonged to Mathis. “Hazel found her pawrents!” the shelter posted Thursday on Facebook. Instead of finding a new forever family, Hazel will be headed back to her old one, now in Minnesota, later this week. Her owners can’t wait to pet her again. “She’s gonna be getting so much attention,” Mathis told WWSB.

Stephen King quits Facebook over ‘flood of false information,’ privacy By Hannah Knowles The Washington Post Famed novelist Stephen King has deleted his Facebook account over concerns the platform supports a “flood of false information” and fails to protect its users’ privacy. Announcing his decision to his millions of Twitter followers Friday, the prolific horror writer joined a chorus of criticism toward the social media giant as it resists pressure to remove false claims from politicians. Facebook also opted last month to keep the tools that help politicians and other groups target its users, adding to fears it will mislead voters in the 2020 presidential race. King pointed to Facebook’s approach to political advertising as

well as privacy to explain his exit, saying people can continue to follow him on Twitter. Twitter drew a stark contrast to Facebook last year when it declared it would not run the political advertising that’s sparked particular worry about viral misinformation. King’s Facebook page, where CNET reports he had more than 5 million followers, has been taken down. King has been vocal opponent of President Donald Trump, whose posts put Facebook’s philosophy on political speech in the spotlight last fall. Facebook declined to remove a Trump campaign ad containing falsehoods despite a request from Democratic presidential contender Joseph Biden, saying political ads are not subject to its usual fact-checking process

created after the 2016 election. Democratic lawmakers and other candidates who may face off against Trump in 2020 accused Facebook of giving the commander in chief a pass to peddle the “fake news” he so often complains about. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., used a pointed ad of her own to critique the policy, opening with: “Breaking news: Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook just endorsed Donald Trump for reelection.” “You’re probably shocked, and you might be thinking, ‘how could this possibly be true?’ “ the ad read. “Well, it’s not. (Sorry.) But what Zuckerberg *has* done is given Donald Trump free rein to lie on his platform — and then to pay Facebook gobs of money to push out their

lies to American voters.” Facebook has defended its actions as upholding freedom of expression, with chief executive Mark Zuckerberg arguing that his company should not try to referee politicians’ statements even as he frets about “an erosion of truth.” “I don’t think people want to live in a world where you can only say things that tech companies decide are 100 percent true,” Zuckerberg told The Washington Post in an interview last fall. “And I think that those tensions are something we have to live with.” Facebook has also struggled to reassure regulators as well as its more than 2 billion users that it is handling people’s data with care, especially after revelations that the data firm

Cambridge Analytica harnessed millions of Facebook profiles for political advertising without individuals’ consent. That scandal prompted an outcry from lawmakers and the public — and newfound scrutiny that continued last year as Facebook announced it suspended tens of thousands of apps over concerns they misused people’s information. Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday morning. King is hardly the first prominent name to ditch Facebook. Celebrities ranging from singer Cher to actor Will Ferrell announced their exit as #DeleteFacebook trended in 2018 amid the fallout over the use of Facebook data by the political consultancy Cambridge Analytica, which

worked for the Trump campaign. The skeptics also included people in the tech sphere, such as Brian Acton, a co-founder of the Facebook-acquired messaging platform WhatsApp. Other popular figures have taken aim at Facebook more recently. Sacha Baron Cohen called massive online platforms “the greatest propaganda machine in history” in a November speech, praising Twitter and Google for taking steps to address false political ads while urging Facebook to change course. Facebook will “even help you micro-target those lies to their users for maximum effect,” he said, suggesting the approach could have boosted Adolf Hitler if Facebook existed in the 1930s.
