Designers are in love with trench coats now By Robin Givhan The Washington Post NEW YORK — The classic trench coat is being ripped apart, chopped in half, blown up — and then put back together. Don’t try this at home. On Monday at Fashion Week, designer Jonathan Simkhai, who founded his self-named brand in 2010, showed a collection in which he cut away the backs of trench coats and inserted yards of flowing brightly patterned fabric, juxtaposing the angular tailoring of the jacket, which has its roots in menswear, with the fluidity of a dress. At Monse last week, the designers Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim
used trenches in their exploration of punk, splicing their hackedup bits with swaths of nubby plaid and holding it all together with giant safety pins. It was a gentle form of subversiveness — nothing too jarring. All of the shapes and ideas were recognizable; they were just conjoined in unique ways. And a newcomer, Wei Ge, used the trench coat as a way of exploring gender traditions and blurring the lines that still separate them. The formal debut of his brand KEH, in a gallery space in Chelsea, showed his skillful execution of roomy tailoring, his quiet use of color and a well-edit-
ed point of view. The graduate of Parsons had a theme that was clear and succinct: menswear with just enough sensuality and experimentation to excite the senses. All this attention on the trench coat is not so much a trend as a newfound obsession. A trend would suggest that a look — or a technique — is brand new or at least that it has not been seen for a good long time. Japanese designer Chitose Abe has spent years separating basics into their various pieces and then splicing those elements back together with bits of contrasting fabrics stitched in. The trench coat is a favorite foil. Designer Kunihi-
ko Morinaga explored proportions of various classic garments — including blazers, crew neck sweaters and trench coats — in his spring 2020 collection for Anrealage. And most notably, Junya Watanabe dedicated his entire spring 2020 collection to the khaki-colored coat. He turned it into skirts and dresses. Its various elements —the lapels, epaulets, belt — were misplaced and reworked. And as filtered through Watanabe’s imagination, the trench coat became the equivalent of a singular melody that was transformed into an endless stream of remixes. The classic coat’s history dates to World
War I — and really even beyond that once you start parsing exactly what counts as a trench. It’s a reflection of tradition, technical ingenuity, patriotism and classism. Thomas Burberry is typically given credit for creating the modern version of the style thanks to his creation of gabardine, a fabric that was water repellent and that allowed the fabric to breathe so that wearers weren’t left roasting in their own sweat. The style exists in countless iterations in a host of brands, but it’s also an irresistible point of experimentation. It’s a recognizable symbol of the Establishment, a key element in the masculine vocabulary and a
paean to practicality. To reinvent it, is not just a bit of fashion sleightof-hand — it’s a stress test of cultural traditions. Designers can’t resist.

Strong views on Trump can be a big dating dealbreaker By Lisa Bonos The Washington Post Log on to Tinder and soon enough you’ll see a bio that includes a version of the line: “Trump supporters, swipe left.” Most people are open to dating someone who doesn’t share their political beliefs, but views on specific issues and personalities (such as President Donald Trump) can be dealbreakers. This week, the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative-leaning think tank in Washington, released a survey of U.S. adults, taken in January, on how politics is changing dating and relationships in the Trump era. Here are five fascinating takeaways. ► Among political issues, abortion is the biggest dealbreaker.
When given a list of issues and asked “how difficult would it be to date someone who does NOT share your own views on the following?” 24 percent said it would be “impossible” to date someone with differing views on abortion. Another 44 percent said it would be either “somewhat” or “very” difficult, and 32 percent said it wouldn’t be “too” difficult or wouldn’t be difficult at all. The issue is more of a dealbreaker for women than for men, and more so for Republican women (38 percent) than it is for Democratic women (27 percent). Other issues that were dealbreakers were religious freedom (20 percent said it would be impossible to date someone who didn’t share their views) and LGBT rights (19 per-
cent). Slightly fewer said the same about gun rights and gun control (16 percent), climate change (15 percent), immigration (13 percent), and affirmative action (12 percent). ► Large majorities of strong Trump supporters — and strong opponents — won’t date someone with a different view of him. Republicans are more open to dating someone who disagrees with them on Trump than Democrats are, the AEI survey, conducted by YouGov, found. However, Trump is mostly an obstacle for those with strong feelings about him. Of those with very unfavorable views of the president, 83 percent wouldn’t date someone with a different view. Among those with a very favorable view of Trump, 59 percent wouldn’t date
someone who disliked the president. ► Aligning on whether to have children (and whether someone smokes) are bigger concerns than sharing politics. For most American adults, sharing political views with a romantic partner isn’t a priority; less than one-third said politics is one of the most important things or very important to have in common. The two most important traits in significant others were that they have similar views on having children (59 percent said it was at least “very important”) and that they do not smoke (58 percent). The rest of the characteristics, ranked from most to least important were: shares religious beliefs or views about religion (39 percent); shares politi-
cal views (31 percent); shares racial or ethnic background (25 percent); pays attention to politics (19 percent); and has at least a fouryear college education (16 percent). However, if someone highlights their politics in their online dating profile, that’s a big signal: About 6 in 10 online daters who mentioned their political views in a dating profile say that it’s important to date someone with similar views. ► Most Americans who are married or in a committed relationship didn’t know their partner’s politics before they started dating. If you met before dating apps, it’s likely you didn’t know where a first date fell politically. Only 14 percent of those married or in committed relationships said they were aware of
their partner’s politics before they started dating — but nearly half did learn this information early on. The survey found that younger adults, ages 18 to 29, are more likely than older adults to know a potential partner’s beliefs before they start a relationship. ► Once you’re married, politics is rarely a source of contention. Most married Americans — 69 percent — said their partner has the same political affiliation. And even if they don’t, there are plenty of other, more pressing things to fight about: The survey found that American couples are more likely to argue with their significant other about money (21 percent) and household chores (20 percent) than they are to fight about politics (7 percent).

attention. On Thursday, the Texas Legislative Black Caucus announced it is working on its version of the CROWN Act, which stands for Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair, to explicitly ban discrimination based on race-related hair textures and styles. With Texas, some 25 states are considering or have passed similar legislation, according to a web site for the CROWN Coalition, a network of civil rights organiza-
tions, black advocacy groups and the beauty brand Dove. New Jersey, New York and California have all passed laws based on those bills; Montgomery County, Maryland has also passed similar legislation. A federal bill was introduced by Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., and Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-La., in December. “The film itself is not focused on hair discrimination, but in his remarks, he elevated the CROWN Act and the need
to normalize black hair,” Adjoa Botwe-Asamoah, a political consultant who has led advocacy efforts for the CROWN Act, said in an interview. She added that the recognition for the short film, which follows a black father’s efforts to style the hair of his little girl, “is a huge win for the movement and all of us focused on this issue.” Cherry’s film, which was created after a 2017 Kickstarter campaign took off, blowing past its initial goals of $75,000

mals can use to cross — such as the under-road culvert the coyote and badger trotted through. “This, by far, is a standout capture out of anything out of our work,” said Neal Sharma, wildlife linkages program manager for POST, which is conducting the study in partnership with Pathways For Wildlife. “The body language from the coyote — that really catches the eye. But the moment that the badger snout enters the frame, that’s what rendered me speechless.” Badgers and coyotes have occasionally been spotted hanging out before, mostly in wide-open spaces, where their skills at hunting ground squirrels and prairie dogs are complementary: Badgers can tunnel below ground to flush out prey, and coyotes can run quickly after the targets above ground. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service shared photos in 2016 of one such badger-coyote duo in northern Colorado. A 1992 study of bad-
ger-coyote associations in northwestern Wyoming concluded that the coyotes definitely benefited — meaning, ate more ground squirrels — from the relationship. The badgers probably also did, the researchers decided, but it was hard to tell, because they were so often below ground. What was clear was that the pairs had formed tolerant, if not friendly, relationships. The coyotes “encouraged badgers to move and search by mock pursuit and by scrambling around a specific site; by leading or by soliciting play,” the authors wrote. “The badgers’ behavior indicated the association with coyotes was either neutral or positive for them.” Yet even though the animals are known to associate, the new California video stands out, Sharma said. “These are two species that are very different and actually traveling through a human-made structure under a busy highway,” Sharma said. “To our
knowledge, it’s a first.” Jennifer Campbell-Smith, a behavioral ecologist and science teacher in Colorado, wrote a widely shared Twitter thread about how “excited” she was by the video. It showed two predators that are often persecuted by humans — and that have been known to kill each other — being playfully at ease together, she wrote. That the animals chose to ally in an area dense with people, where survival itself is a challenge, is even more remarkable, she said in an interview. “The coyote was definitely excited about the badger, and the badger was about as excited as badgers get, which is, ‘I’m going to walk with you and not growl at you,’ “ Campbell-Smith said. “We were looking at something where they were relaxed with each other, with no aggressive behavior shown. These are two animals that very much showed body language that they knew one another as individuals.”

Fish and Wildlife Service proposed lifting those protections. While touring, we were treated to the impressive call-and-answer howls of Little Girl (a timber wolf) and Jake (a wolfdog). The notion that wolves howl at the moon is a myth, though. While they can smell prey from miles away, their eyesight is average, so they see better under a full moon to make a kill. That’s reason enough for a howling celebration.

“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”
Time to ditch the ‘console wars’ narrative Xbox eyes Google, Amazon as rivals By Gene Park The Washington Post Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s head of Xbox, hasn’t been worried about the “console wars” for some time. In a recent interview, he made clear who Microsoft views as its competition. “When you talk about Nintendo and Sony, we have a ton of respect for them, but we see Amazon and Google as the main competitors going forward,” said Spencer in an interview with Protocol, a new tech
site launched by Politico’s founder. “That’s not to disrespect Nintendo and Sony, but the traditional gaming companies are somewhat out of position.” His words might come as a surprise to people invested in the now-30-year-old narrative of a “console war,” particularly since the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 are coming later this year. In particular, fans a little too invested in that narrative might interpret Spencer’s word as a

salty diss; the Xbox One didn’t sell as well as the PS4, after all. Moreover, Xbox announced it wouldn’t be releasing any first-party exclusives when it launches the Xbox Series X. By the logic of the console wars narrative, this would put Xbox at a disadvantage. But if you’ve been following Microsoft’s multibillion-dollar investments into cloud computing, Spencer’s words are not just an inevitability: They’re an acknowledgment of a rapidly changing market. The article, which gives a good overview of Silicon Valley’s investments into gaming, says Spencer’s nonchalance about Sony and Nintendo stems from Microsoft’s confidence in its global cloud computing infrastructure
advantage. Azure, Microsoft’s venture into that realm, has slowly but steadily gained on its competitors, namely Amazon Web Services. Its most notable victory: Last year the Trump Administration awarded Microsoft, not Amazon, a $10 billion, decade-long cloud services contract with the Defense Department. “I guess they could try to re-create Azure, but we’ve invested tens of billions of dollars in cloud over the years,” Spencer added. “I don’t want to be in a fight over format wars with those guys while Amazon and Google are focusing on how to get gaming to 7 billion people around the world. Ultimately, that’s the goal.” Spencer’s quote also shouldn’t surprise folks who have been following the latest dispatches from the console war front. In an earlier interview with

The Verge, Spencer said that “the business itself isn’t how many consoles you sell.” Moreover, Nintendo has become progressively less interested in competing with Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo and Microsoft now openly flaunt their collaborative efforts: Xbox Live users can sign in on a Nintendo Switch, for example. Many will discount Google and point to the timid, shaky launch of its Stadia platform. But Google has made no secret about its intentions to invest further in the gaming space and improve the platform. As Stadia chief Phil Harrison (formerly of PlayStation) says in the same Protocol article, Google is counting on Stadia’s free tier to change the platform’s reputation. Stadia is still currently only available to early-adopting monthly subscribers.
New White Mountain, Masterpiece and Springbok Puzzles Arriving! Great New Images!
The Xbox brand is still testing out its xCloud service, which would compete with Stadia. Sony has its PSNow streaming service, which stumbled out the gate but reportedly now boasts more than a million subscribers. When it comes to online services, Nintendo is the weakest of the “Big 3,” as the company has historically been extremely conservative in approaching the Internet, and even now the Switch struggles to offer anything close to the online capabilities and user friendliness of other platforms. But although the “console war” narrative will likely live on, Spencer seems keen to move on from schoolyard arguments over which living room box is best. The stakes are now much higher.

“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”
This rock-and-roll song launched a musical genre about kids, cars and crashes By Samantha Drake The Washington Post Six decades ago, a mournful song dominated rock-and-roll radio play. It told the story of a young couple who escape their car after it stalls on railroad tracks, only to have the girl run back for the class ring the boy gave her and die when a train slams into the vehicle. “Teen Angel” became the first teen-tragedy song to reach No. 1 on the charts and paved the way for a distinct, though short-lived, musical genre about youths dying in car or motorcycle wrecks. It was an unsettling tune for an unsettling time in music history. “Teen Angel” topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart on Feb. 8, 1960, almost exactly a year after music pioneers Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson Jr., a.k.a. the Big Bopper, died in a plane
crash in snowy Iowa on Feb. 3, 1959. But its release also came at a unique social moment, as teen culture began to coalesce and embrace a new kind of music. Record company executives looking for the next Elvis Presley saw dollar signs in the largely white demographic that had money to buy 45s and long-playing albums. They wanted songs that would resonate, according to John Covach, director of the Institute for Popular Music at the University of Rochester in New York and author of “What’s That Sound? An Introduction to Rock and Its History.” “Teen Angel” and similar hits zeroed in on the intensity of first love and embodied the “teenage idealization of death and romance,” Covach said. “In most cases, the death that occurs . . . is either proof of fidelity and love, or it’s a consequence of

love and fidelity.” The same year that singer Mark Dinning became briefly famous for “Teen Angel” — which was written by his sister and her husband — Ray Peterson lamented another loss in “Tell Laura I Love Her.” His was the story of a boy who enters a stock car race hoping to win money to buy his girlfriend, Laura, a wedding ring, with predictably heartbreaking results. And before 1960 ended, Marilyn Michaels recorded an “answer song” called “Tell Tommy I Miss Him.” All reflected the real life car-crash deaths of teen idol James Dean in 1955 and singer Eddie Cochran in 1960. Art imitated life on-screen as well: In the ultimate teen-angst movie, “Rebel Without a Cause,” a boy drives over the edge of
a bluff in a fatal game of chicken with Dean’s character. The film was released only weeks after the actor died. He was just 24. Other early rockand-roll songs focused on more bubbly aspects of teenagers’ life — dances, high school and cars — because that’s what the target audience was interested in, noted Jack Hamilton, an assistant professor of American studies and media studies at the University of Virginia. Those tunes were typically, intentionally upbeat — from “Let’s Twist Again” by Chubby Checkers (1961) to the Beach Boys’ “Be True to Your School” (1963) to “Maybellene” by Chuck Berry (1955). The tragedy genre aimed to elicit a different response. “It was a way for rock-and-roll to move towards more serious

rience. But they have parents telling them, ‘You don’t really know what love is yet, you’re too young,’” Covach said. “So there’s a sense of trying to prove to parental authority that what you have is the real thing. And it’s so real that somebody dies for it.” The genre peaked in 1964 with the trifecta of “Last Kiss” by J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers, “Dead Man’s Curve” by Jan and Dean, and “Leader of the Pack” by the Shangri-Las. Yet “Teen Angel” had a particular staying power. Various artists covered the song, including Sha Na Na, who performed it at Woodstock in 1969. The song also popped up in a 1973 coming-of-age film that itself became a classic. In “American Graffiti,” however, every teen survives.

issues, but a lot of the songs are so sentimental and maudlin,” said Hamilton, the author of “Just Around Midnight: Rock and Roll and the Racial Imagination.” “They’re not all that emotionally complex. They’re kind of quaint and strange.” Perhaps that also reflected the times, before the wrenching turmoil of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination and fights over the Vietnam War and civil rights. The teens listening were baby boomers, “the first coddled generation of kids,” Covach noted. Their GI fathers had come home from World War II and tried to construct a safe bubble around their children. In some ways, the songs hinted of the darkness ahead. “When teens discover love for the first time, it can be a powerful expe-

100-year-old Tuskegee Airman aims to inspire at annual Smithsonian event By Hannah Natanson The Washington Post CHANTILLY, Virginia. — Across his long and barrier-bursting career, Tuskegee Airman and Brig. Gen. Charles McGee fought in three wars, flew 409 combat missions and — during World War II — helped rescue at least 1,000 prisoners of war in Romania. But, on Saturday morning at the Smithsonian’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia, it was another number that most captivated Isaac Preston. “He’s 100 years old,” Isaac, 9, told his (chuckling) parents, staring at the hand he had just used to shake McGee’s. “He’s 100 years old!” In his other hand, Isaac clutched a copy of “Tuskegee Airman,” a biography of McGee that the man himself inscribed — in looping, turquoise cursive — with his name, the date and a message: “Seek excellence, Isaac!” The boy’s book was one of roughly 70 that McGee would sign before delivering an impromptu speech in the early afternoon, all part of the Smithsonian’s annual African American Pioneers in Aviation and Space Family Day. The free commemoration also featured a pup-
pet show detailing the lives of African-American air and space adventurers, a display of African-American flight artifacts typically tucked away in National Air and Space Museum Archives and a panel discussion centered on careers in aviation and engineering. Elsewhere in the vast, airy Udvar-Hazy hangar, children could build colorful plastic planes or fashion rockets from straws and “Air-Dry Clay” before launching them, with much whooping and little guidance, in a museum corner. Still — as evidenced by the line of grandparents, parents, teens, toddlers and babies massed beneath the yellow, baby blue and olive green aircraft that dangle from the Udvar-Hazy Center ceiling — the main attraction was indisputable. “How are you doing in school?” McGee asked child after child, swallowing their small hands in his silken, wrinkled palms. “School is so important,” he added, before offering the same parting injunction: “You are the future, you know.” Leaning toward one little boy who wore his hair in braids, McGee whispered: “You could fly to Mars!”
The celebration was the latest in a string of high-profile events for McGee in recent weeks: Accompanied by three other centenarian World War II veterans, he opened Super Bowl LIV on Feb. 2 with a coin flip. On Tuesday, he sat in the audience for the State of the Union address, during which President Donald Trump dubbed him a “hero,” inspiring a rare moment of sustained, bipartisan applause. Earlier, Trump had approved McGee’s honorary promotion from colonel to general, after Congress voted for the measure. The boost in rank capped a 30-year career in the Air Force that saw McGee become the first African-American to command a stateside Air Force wing and a base in the integrated Air Force. His time with the Tuskegee Airmen was equally pathbreaking. The airmen, comprising more than 900 black pilots trained at the segregated Tuskegee airfield in Alabama, overcame racism and oppression to fly patrol, strafing and escort missions during World War II, the tails of their planes painted red. Despite his crowded schedule, the only sign of fatigue McGee displayed Saturday was
a half-finished cup of Dunkin’ coffee, taken black, which he tucked behind a rapidly dwindling stack of his books. The general, his clothes and voice equally crisp, said during a break from signings that he felt well rested. Adults in line, watching and waiting their turn, muttered a shared disbelief. A balding, middle-aged man in a blueand-white-striped polo shirt said he wanted to start eating whatever McGee does. Standing a few places away, a grayhaired man in a maroon quarter-zip said he and
his wife were so shocked to learn that McGee would be signing books in person Saturday that she almost tackled him from excitement. As they got close, most everyone in line began by thanking the general for his service. One man slowly spelled the name of his military daughter, Anne. A woman spoke at length, in low tones, about her family members in the Air Force. Another man, who said he was a colonel, got down on his knees and confided that he had always wanted to fly, but he was too tall.

Isaac’s mother, Shanna Preston, 36, saved her words until her son and her husband had already stepped away. She leaned over the table and mentioned the day that McGee was honored at the State of the Union: Feb. 4. “That,” she said with a glance toward her 9-year-old, “was his birthday.” McGee looked at Isaac, too, and nodded. He pressed his palms together and pointed them at the boy, like a prayer.
