Wendy’s mascot not as sweet as she looks On Twitter she is a mean girl By Emily Heil T h e W a sh i n gt on P ost Wendy’s mascot — that red-haired, pig-tailed, freckle-cheeked girl — might look sweet. But the fast-food chain’s tweets, accompanied by an image of her grinning face, are anything but. And lately, the burger purveyor’s snark is reaching triple-stack levels — and its trolling of competitors is colder than a Frosty shake. Recently, Wendy’s responded with an insult to a tweet of a news story about a new Burger King sandwich, available in New Zealand, that features fries in place of the usual burger patty. “When literally anything would be better on a bun than their beef,” the chain wrote. Wendy’s bare-knuckles attack on its rival might have been prompted by a social media dust-up last month that started when Burger King posted a photo of its royal mascot standing in front of a Wendy’s location holding a sign that reads “Roses are

red; Violets are blue. Patties are round,” which was meant as a dig at Wendy’s square burgers. Wendy’s responded with pure fire: “Look who dropped by to see what Spicy Nuggets were supposed to taste like,” the chain wrote. And it has dunked plenty lately on McDonald’s, too. On Jan. 27, a follower tweeted a picture that seemed to show two maintenance workers hauling a bin to a dumpster in the parking lot of a McDonald’s. “What do you think they’re doing there?” the person asked Wendy’s. The zinger of a clap-back: “Picking up their order.” A few days before that, someone sent them a photo of a truck bearing the Golden Arches, asking Wendy’s what they’d call it. “Is it a garbage truck?” the Wendy’s account fired back. In responses to the Burger King tweet on Tuesday, Wendy’s referred dismissively to “the clown,” an obvious reference to the longtime McDonald’s mascot, Ronald McDonald. Wendy’s has long made a practice of getting in digs at competitors on social media. But it seems even saltier and troll-ier than usual. “Do yall got beef with burger king and McDonalds?” one user

Artificial intelligence could fight a future coronavirus By Amy Thomson, Suzi Ring Bloomberg Disease outbreaks like the coronavirus often unfold too quickly for scientists to find a cure. But in the future, artificial intelligence could help researchers do a better job. While it’s probably too late for the fledgling technology to play a major role in the current epidemic, there’s hope for the next outbreaks. AI is good at combing through mounds of data to find connections that make it easier to determine what kinds of treatments could work or which experiments to pursue next. The question is what

Big Data will come up with when it only gets meager scraps of information on a newly emerged illness like Covid-19, which first emerged late last year in China and has sickened more than 75,000 people in about two months. The fact that researchers managed to produce the gene sequencing of the new virus within weeks of the first reported cases is promising, since it shows there’s far more immediate data available now when outbreaks happen. Andrew Hopkins, chief executive officer of Oxford, England-based startup Exscientia Ltd. is among those work-

ing to help train artificial intelligence for drug discovery. He figures new treatments could go from conception to clinical testing in as little as 18 to 24 months within the next decade, thanks to AI. Exscientia designed a new compound for treating obsessivecompulsive disorder that’s ready to be tested in the lab after less than a year in the initial research phase. That’s about five times faster than average, according to the company. Cambridge-based Healx has a similar approach, but it uses machine learning to find new uses for existing drugs. Both companies feed their algo-

rithms with information — gleaned from sources such as journals, biomedical databases and clinical trials — to help suggest new treatments for diseases. The two companies each use a team of human researchers to work alongside the AI to help guide the process. In Exscientia’s approach, dubbed the Centaur Chemist, drug designers help teach the algorithms strategies for searching for compounds. Healx puts the AI’s predictions to researchers who analyze the results and decide what to pursue. Neil Thompson, Healx’s chief science officer, said the technique could be deployed against an outbreak like the coronavirus as long as it had enough data on the new disease. Healx isn’t working on tack-

ling the coronavirus or tweaking its technology for outbreaks, but it wouldn’t be a stretch. “We’re quite close,” Thompson said in an interview. “We wouldn’t need to change much about the AI algorithms we use. We look at matching drug properties to disease features.” Artificial intelligence algorithms are already starting to churn out drugs for the diseases we know about. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said on Thursday that they’d used the method to identify a powerful new antibiotic compound that could kill an array of troublesome bacteria, even some that are currently resistant to other treatments. One catch for all these technologies is clinical testing. Even drugs already safe for use to cure one ailment should be tested again before

they’re prescribed for another. The process of showing they are safe and effective on a large number of people can take years before going to regulators for review. To be effective, AI-based drug developers would have to plan ahead of time, picking out a virus genome likely to cause problems in the future and targeting it when there are few incentives to do so. Another obstacle is finding qualified staff. “It’s hard to find people who can operate at the intersection of AI and biology, and it’s difficult for big companies to make quick decisions on technology like this,” said Irina Haivas, a partner at venture capital firm Atomico and former surgeon who sits on the board of Healx. “It’s not enough to be an AI engineer, you have to understand and get into the applications of biology.”

British youth soccer players banned from headers in practice By Jacob Bogage T h e W a sh i n gt on P ost British youth soccer players will no longer learn to head the ball before age 11, according to new safety guidelines announced by sport officials this week aimed to cut down on exposure to the potentially harmful play. Children in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland will not begin instruction on headers until they leave primary school, and even then, “it will remain a low priority when compared to other technical aspects of the game,” state the guidelines, published concurrently by the Football Associations of the three countries. Wales did not

adopt the rules. The changes, which take immediate effect, are one of the first reactions to a 2019 study from the University of Glasgow on the incidence of degenerative brain disease in former professional soccer players. The research found ex-pro players were about 3½ times more likely to die of dementia compared with a control sample, and five times more likely to die of Parkinson’s. The former soccer players were less likely to die of heart disease and some cancers, researchers found. The policy changes touch every age group of youth soccer in England, Scotland and Northern

Ireland. Primary schoolchildren are not to head the ball outside of matches, where headers are already rare. Players beginning in under-12 age groups can begin practicing headers once a month with a maximum of five attempts, although the “expectation is that heading should not be introduced at this stage,” while U-13 players can practice heading once a week with a five-attempt maximum. Players at the U-14, U-15 and U-16 levels can practice headers once a week with a 10-attempt maximum. None of those age groups should practice “contested” headers, where players joust in the air with an

opponent for the ball, the guidelines state. Heading drills for older players “should be reduced as far as possible, taking into consideration the heading exposure in matches,” but can proceed without formal restriction. “The updated guidelines are designed to help coaches remove repetitive and unnecessary heading from youth football in the earliest years, with a phased introduction at an age group considered most appropriate by our medical experts,” Scottish FA chief executive Ian Maxwell said in a statement. “It is important to reassure that heading is rare in youth football matches, but we are

clear that the guidelines should mitigate any potential risks.” The guidelines also call for players to use the lowest authorized pressure in soccer balls. The leader of the Glasgow study told the BBC he was “encouraged” by the new regulations. “A lot more research is needed to understand the factors contributing to increased risk of neurodegenerative disease in footballers,” said William Stewart, a consultant neuropathologist at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow. “Meanwhile it is sensible to act to reduce exposure to the only recognized risk factor so far.”

The rules mimic those instituted by the United States Soccer Federation in 2015 as part of a class-action settlement over a lawsuit that criticized the federation’s concussion protocols. USSF banned heading for children 10 and under and limited heading in practice for 11-, 12- and 13-yearolds. It also agreed to modify substitution rules to allow more time for medical evaluations of players who may have suffered head trauma, install more comprehensive return-to-play instructions for players coming back from concussions, and improve concussion awareness among players, coaches and parents.

Smart devices are transforming the bathroom experience By Lindsey M. Roberts T h e W a sh i n gt on P ost One of the last places you might expect to talk to Alexa is the bathroom. And yet this most private of rooms is becoming smarter, with everything from voice-activated mirrors to aromatherapy shower heads. A popular toilet in Japan, the Toto Neorest, has a “heated seat, automated controls, bidet and memory sensors to provide a customized experience,” says Steve Kadlec, founder and principal of Kadlec Architecture and Design in Chicago.

Because smart tech in the bathroom can quickly get pricey — smart toilets run up to around $17,000 — Kadlec recommends keeping costs down elsewhere. Update the throne room by cleaning the tile and grout, replacing shower curtains with glass panels and finding a largeformat porcelain or ceramic tile for big impact on the floor. Also consider installing affordable heated floor mats under the tiles, he says. Greg Coccaro, co-founder of the home-goods store Beam in Brooklyn,

also recommends paint and artwork, specifically warm hues to bring out warm tones in the skin. Small, relatively inexpensive changes leave more in the budget for smart upgrades. “Alexa, turn on the shower:” a command made possible by the U by Moen Shower 2-Outlet Digital Shower Controller in beige or black ($733.72$734.74 with required thermostatic digital shower valve, amazon. com). Recommended by designer Kadlec, the tool allows shower control from voice, phone or con-

troller. Set a time for your shower, start and pause to control water use, and control the temperature. It’s also available with four outlets. The Sensor Mirror Hi-Fi 8” Round from Simplehuman has five-times magnification for makeup application or shaving ($400, nordstrom.com). “I just love that it turns on upon approach and simulates natural sunlight,” says Tracy Morris, an interior designer in McLean, Virginia. “In this latest version, you can apply your makeup and complete other tasks in the room with Alexa.” Casey Hardin, North Carolina-based designer for Decorist, recommends hands-free (and thus, germ-free) faucets, such as the Zura Single Handle

Touch2O Vessel Bathroom Faucet ($532.67, build.com) by Delta. Once only for commercial bathrooms, these faucets are making their way into homes. Turn water on and off manually with a light touch to the spout or handle or by placing hands near the faucet. It uses 20 percent less water than industry-standard faucets. Although Kirsten Gable, a kitchen and bath designer at Marylandbased Anthony Wilder Design/Build, has ordered Toto’s new Drake Washlet+ S500E toilet for projects, she knows the $2,035 cost can be prohibitive. The Drake features rear and front wash, a deodorizer, adjustable water temperature and a heated seat, as well

as a super-effective flush; however, “Toto offers simpler models for less,” she says, including the Washlet Electric Bidet Seat ($254.93, homedepot.com). A wireless remote adjusts water pressure, temperature and position. The seat is heated, and the lid closes softly. The seat also includes a warm air dryer and air deodorizer. Sticklers of cleanliness, rejoice: A portable toothbrush sanitizer is now available to sterilize toothbrushes between uses. The MAXOAK UV Toothbrush Sanitizer Case ($29.99, maxoak. net) “is a really convenient way to help keep it germ free and it only take three minutes,” interior designer Coccaro said in an email.

office between Oct. 23, 2019 and Jan. 25, 2020, according to the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. For everyone, the vaccine cut infections caused by influenza B by half and reduced cases of influenza A, which picked up steam at the end of 2019, by about onethird. Researchers use a survey of doctor-office visits to estimate the vaccine’s effectiveness. The analysis looked at 4,112 patients who showed up at their doctor’s offices complaining of cold and flu-like symptoms. The majority of those who tested negative for the flu had gotten the vaccine. Flu levels are still elevated across the country and severe illnesses, including hospitalization rates for children and teenagers, are higher at this point

than any recent years, including the 2017-2018 season that left hospitals scrambling, the agency said. Already, 92 children have died from the flu, the highest number for this time point since reporting began in 2004, other than the 2009 swine flu pandemic. The CDC estimates that at least 26 million Americans have contracted the flu, 250,000 were hospitalized, and 14,000 died. “CDC recommends that health care providers continue to administer influenza vaccine to persons aged 6 months or greater because influenza activity is ongoing, and the vaccine can still prevent illness, hospitalization, and death associated with currently circulating influenza viruses as well as other influenza virus-

es that might circulate later in the season,” the agency’s report said. The news wasn’t all positive. The vaccine isn’t significantly protecting adults up to age 49 against the influenza A strain that began circulating at the end of the year, the agency said. “The bad news is that not everyone is protected,” said Flannery. “Some people who get the vaccine still get ill.” Even when the vaccine isn’t well matched, it can offer some protection against illness and even death, the CDC said. Last season, the vaccine was about 29% effective against the circulating strains of the flu. Still, it prevented about 4.4 million illnesses, 2.3 million medical visits, 58,000 hospitalizations and 3,500 deaths, the agency said.

level of doctor’s office visits for influenza-like illness, accompanied by an unexpectedly low rate of deaths. That may be because the predominant early strain circulating in the U.S was influenza B, which seems to hit children the hardest, while the elderly are most likely to die during a normal flu season. High rates of the flu have also raised concerns that the virus will be mistaken for, or mask cases of, the new coronavirus that has infected tens of thousands in China but largely spared the U.S. The CDC has set up surveys in several large U.S. cities to test for the new virus. Dow sinks as coronavirus fallout continues By Taylor Telford T h e W a s h i n gt on P os t

U.S. stock markets ended the week down, as signs of the coronavirus’ chilling effect on the global economy continued to surface in earnings and manufacturing data. The tech-heavy Nasdaq closed down 1.79% on Friday, with tech stocks like Apple Inc., Amazon and Alphabet, the parent company of Google, hit particularly hard. Dow Jones industrial average closed down 0.78% in the red and at one point was down more than 300 points, but regained some of its losses. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index slid 1.2%. Friday’s fall slated the

major averages for their first weekly losses since the start of the month. Investor fears were reflected in gold’s extended rally, which powered the safe haven nearly 1.7% to a sevenyear-high of $1,648. Meanwhile, the yield on the 30-year Treasury fell to an all-time low, suggesting investors’ confidence in the economy has been shaken. Oil prices also fell nearly 1% off concerns that the outbreak could dampen crude demand. “While the number of new cases of coronavirus continues to slow in China, the spread outside the country is escalating and it seems the market is waking up to the impact on both individual companies and

the wider economy,” Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, wrote in commentary Friday. “Profit warnings linked to the health crisis, as companies are either hit by slowing consumer demand in China or impact on their supply chain, are starting to trickle out with the impact on iPhone sales revealed by Apple earlier this week the most high profile of these.” The virus has killed more than 2,000 people worldwide and sickened more than 75,000, and the fallout has rippled around the globe through supply chain disruptions, cratering tourism and travel, and widespread store closures that are challenging global firms and stalling growth at a

time when it was expected to rebound thanks to the U.S.-China trade truce. Experts now predict the global economy will shrink this quarter for the first time since 2009. Fresh Purchasing Managers index data revealed that U.S. economic output shrank for the first time since October 2013 in January, the contraction driven by a severe dropoff in the services sector. Services business activity fell to 49.4 in February, down from 53.4 in January, the report showed. Readings under 50 indicate a contraction, while over 50 indicates growth. “The deterioration in was in part linked to the coronavirus outbreak, manifesting itself in weakened demand across

sectors such as travel and tourism, as well as via falling exports and supply chain disruptions,” Chris Williamson, chief business economist at IHS Markit, said in the report. “However, companies also reported increased caution in respect to spending due to worries about a wider economic slowdown and uncertainty ahead of the presidential election later this year.” The coronavirus has slammed China’s economy, diminishing its oil consumption and disrupting the careful symmetry between global supply and demand. U.S. benchmark crude and Brent crude were trading at around $53 and $58 per barrel, respectively, far lower than what

oil companies and major supplier nations prefer. BP has warned that the virus could reduce global oil demand by as much as 40% this year. Appearing on CNBC Friday morning, President Trump’s chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow said that even as the coronavirus paralyzes the Chinese economy, the United States is not going to “decouple” from China. From an economic standpoint, “we should be very calm about the U.S. side of the story” Kudlow said, even as so many U.S. companies rely on deeply-embedded Chinese supply chains. Kudlow also dismissed fears about the 30-year Treasury note performance, suggesting it was a reflection of investor anxiety about the virus, rather than the fundamentals of the economy. “I think you’ve got a lot of big mood swings here,” Kudlow said.

First cheetah cubs are born from IVF By Dana Hedgpeth For the first time, a pair of cheetah cubs was born after an in vitro fertilization procedure to a surrogate cheetah, with help from scientists at the National Zoo. Zoo officials said the cubs were born Wednesday at the Columbus Zoo to 3-year-old Izzy. The cubs’ biological mother is 6½-year-old Kibibi. Experts at the National Zoo in the District of Columbia said in a statement that “cheetahs naturally have low genetic diversity due to a near extinction at the end of the last ice age.” For about 20 years, scientists have been trying to boost the cheetah population through IVF and embryo transfers. Officials said the embryo transfer was done by scientists at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia, and the Columbus Zoo in Ohio. The zoo waited until Monday to announce the births due to the high infant mortality rate in cheetahs

— about 25%. The next step will be to figure out what to name the cubs. The semen for the cheetah cubs came from a cheetah at the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Texas. Eggs were harvested from Kibibi at the Columbus, Ohio, Zoo in November, and they underwent in vitro fertilization in a lab. The fertilized embryos were then transferred to Izzy. Officials said it was the third time scientists had attempted the procedure worldwide and it was the first time it worked. Pierre Comizzoli, a reproductive biologist at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and one of the scientists who performed the embryo transfer, said the birth makes cheetahs the second large cat to successfully be born from in vitro fertilization. The first was the

embryo transfer after only the third attempt gives me hope for the future of this technique for improving cheetah management, potentially on a global scale,” she said in a statement. “We can extend a cheetah’s biological clock.” Crosier said the public might be able to see the cubs this spring at the Columbus Zoo. They join 17 other cheetahs at the zoo. In the wild, cheetahs have become extinct in at least 13 countries in Africa. There are about 7,500 cheetahs in the wild. They are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Burger King trims artificial additives, with one big exception By Leslie Patton, Deena Shanker, Lydia Mulvany Bloomberg Burger King is cutting artificial flavors and additives from its menu, but at least one controversial ingredient is sticking around. That’s soy leghemoglobin, or heme, the highly processed and genetically-modified ingredient used by Impossible Foods. It’s the “magic ingredient” that turns the plant-based Impossible Whopper into a meatlike burger, and it’s one that the U.S. government considers a color additive, and therefore artificial, when the product is sold red and uncooked. This highlights the inherent contradiction of two of today’s top food trends: While growing

numbers of consumers want to eat more natural foods, many are also cutting down on meat and turning to processed substitutes, such as the Impossible Whopper. That leaves companies like Burger King, which are trying to appeal to both, to navigate a tricky landscape. Impossible’s heme, made from genetically modified yeast and nodules found on the roots of soy plants, is an ingredient that few would consider natural, said Michael Hansen, senior scientist at Consumer Reports. When consumers are surveyed about the word ‘natural,’ they always assume it means no added chemicals and pesticides or genetically modified ingredients, Hansen said. Impossible’s heme is

artificial because “the combination they’re doing doesn’t exist in nature. It is synthetic,” he said. “It’s something they’re creating by engineering yeast proteins to produce it.” For government agencies such as the FDA, “anything used for the purposes of coloring food is considered an artificial color additive, even if it is a natural ingredient such as carrots, because it is not naturally occurring in the ingredient,” according to Elmis Medina, head of product sustainability at Burger King. “What we are doing at Burger King is removing colors from artificial sources.” The restaurant chain does use natural colorants, such as paprika and lycopene from tomatoes, she said in a

statement to Bloomberg News. Impossible Foods spokesperson Rachel Konrad told Bloomberg in an email that it takes no position on what the terms “natural” and “artificial” flavors mean, as there are “various ways” to define them. Burger King is airing commercials featuring a moldy Whopper, touting “the beauty of no artificial preservatives,” to highlight the changes to the menu. Konrad said Impossible doesn’t comment on restaurant partners’ ad campaigns. She added that the company is proud of its genetic engineering that created the patty. Any color additive “meets the definition of an artificial color additive for labeling purpos-

es,” said Nathan Arnold, an FDA spokesperson. Because raw Impossible burgers are red, just like raw meat, Impossible Foods needed the FDA to approve heme as a safe color additive in imitation beef before it could be sold in grocery stores. The company won the approval last year. Impossible’s faux meat has given Burger King a lift in the past six months, sending a new group of customers into restaurants to try the burger. The Restaurant Brands International Inc.-owned chain is expanding the Impossible line with a limited test of a new breakfast patty that imitates sausage. Burger King’s samestore sales rose 2.8 percent in the latest quar-

ter, but it’s seeing more competition from rivals that are quickly adding their own plant-based meats to their menus. Last week, Burger King said that 90 percent of its food ingredients had no colors, flavors or preservatives from artificial sources. Burger King also announced that it had nixed MSG and high-fructose corn syrup from its menu. While faux meat from Impossible Foods and competitor Beyond Meat is appearing in growing numbers of U.S. restaurant menus, not everyone is a fan. Chipotle Mexican Grill Chief Executive Officer Brian Niccol said last year that his chain wouldn’t use the products because they’re too processed.
