Even adults with dementia and serious illness show gains

Its most famous advocate is Hunter “Patch” Adams, who has been clowning in health care settings since the 1970s and who was portrayed by Robin Williams in a popular 1998 film. But Adams isn’t its only wacky practitioner. In a recent TED talk, Matthew Wilson tells stories of his (absurdly) touching experiences with cancer patients and

Cherry blossom forecast By Jason Samenow The Washington Post Following a springlike winter, leaves are emerging and flower buds are bursting in the Washington region up to three weeks ahead of schedule. Soon, too, the famed cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin will awaken, and possibly on the early side as well. We are forecasting peak bloom between March 25 and March 29, centered on the 27th. This is a few days earlier than the recent (30-year) average of March 31, and a week before the longer-term (1921-2019) average of April 3. Last year, when temperatures weren’t as mild, peak bloom for the cherry trees was declared on April 1.
Given how mild it has been and how quickly other flowers are blooming around the region, it might seem surprising that we do not expect the cherry blossoms to peak even sooner. However, the weather predicted over the next couple of weeks does not seem like it will be warm enough for them to emerge much earlier than late March. Peak bloom is reached when 70% of the cherry blossoms flower along the Tidal Basin. If our forecast holds, peak bloom will coincide with the National Cherry Blossom Festival, set for March 20 to April 12. Blossoms start to appear on trees several days before the peak bloom date and, if it’s warm and dry

and winds are light, can remain for a week or so after. But in some years, petals have fallen off sooner because of wind, rain or frost. Since records began in 1921, the average peak bloom date has advanced about five days earlier in the spring, as March temperatures have warmed. Although the most recent 30-year-average date of peak bloom is March 31, the average peak bloom date from 1921 to 1950 was April 4. The earliest peak bloom on record occurred March 15, 1990, while the latest was April 18, 1958. The National Park Service cautions that “forecasting peak bloom is almost impossible more than 10 days in advance,” yet that hasn’t stopped it from trying. For many years, it has issued peak bloom forecasts in early March
Peak bloom in Washington around March 27, several days early
and will release its prediction for 2020’s peak bloom Wednesday. Historically, average March temperatures are the leading predictor of peak bloom dates. When it’s warm, the blossoms tend to come out early, and when it’s cold, they generally emerge late. Last year, March temperatures were close to average and so was the cherry blossom peak bloom date (April 1). This year, we’re expecting March temperatures to be several degrees warmer than normal, favoring an earlier bloom. The blossoms are off to a head start, due to the mild temperatures in February, and have reached their initial “green bud” stage about five days ahead of average. However, we’re not expecting a historically early bloom. Unusually warm, sunny days and mild nights tend to push

the blossoms toward peak bloom fastest, and although we’re predicting above-average March temperatures, we don’t see exceptionally warm weather in the forecast. In the years with the earliest peak blooms, such as 1990 (March 15) and 2012 (March 20), early to midMarch featured multiple sunny days with temperatures in the 70s and 80s. This year, we expect our milder days to be in the 50s and 60s instead, favoring a steady progress toward peak bloom, rather than a sudden bud burst. An excess of cold and cloudy days and freezing nights 15% more than we’re predicting — could push the peak bloom date into April. But if we end up with more sunny, warm days and mild nights than we are expecting, then an unusually early March bloom would become probable, before March 25.
Given the uncertainty in how March weather will play out, we offer some alternative scenarios for the peak bloom date, in case our most possible forecast of March 25 to March 29 doesn’t work out: ► Peak bloom before March 20 — 10% chance ► Peak bloom March 20-24 — 15% chance ► Peak bloom March 30 to April 3 — 15% chance ► Peak bloom after April 3 — 10% chance This peak bloom outlook is made on the basis of available weather forecast data in early March and may require revision if big shifts in the forecast occur.

TV series reveals how STEM disciplines can be fun careers for women By Erin Blakemore The Washington Post When social science researchers asked children to draw a scientist in the 1960s and 1970s, more than 99% of the scientists they drew were men. That percentage has dropped over time, but kids still overwhelmingly think of scientists as men. “Mission Unstoppable With Miranda Cosgrove,” which airs Saturday mornings on CBS, could help change that. Powered by women in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, the TV series recasts science as women’s work.
It also shows that science is fun — and how role models turn it into careers. Fields such as zoology, oceanography, neuroscience and biomedical engineering come along for the ride. The science lessons are delivered in snackable chunks. In one episode, teen correspondents interview bat conservationist Kristen Lear, who talks about why the winged mammals get a bad rap in the media; check in with Ashley Kimbel, a teen who used a 3D printer to create a prosthetic foot for an amputee veteran; and chat with Ellen Stofan,
NASA’s former chief scientist and Mars director of the National Air and Space Museum. Kids also compete to make a Leonardo da Vinci-style wooden bridge held up by only friction and gravity. The show aims to make its subject matter accessible and fun. It succeeds, packing plenty of information into a half-hour block hosted by Miranda Cosgrove, a TV vet who was once Hollywood’s best-paid child actress. The series is executive-produced by actress
Geena Davis and funded by Lyda Hill Philanthropies, which pledged $25 million to inspire girls to pursue STEM careers through its IF/THEN initiative. One memorable part of the show comes at the end when guests share “one last thing” with young viewers and get real about their fears, failures and inspirations. The show may be presented by and geared toward women, but it isn’t didactic. The stimulating subject matter helps.
Viewers of both genders may get so immersed in its exploration of carnivores, science fiction, microchips and the Mars rover that they don’t realize they’re starting to think

What to expect during a bathroom remodel
T
here are many reasons to renovate a home. Some homeowners purchase fixer-uppers and commit to making major renovations before they even move in, while others may renovate their homes with an eye on resale value. But many homeowners also take on renovation projects to make the homes more livable for themselves. Bathroom renovations are popular projects. In fact, a 2018 survey from the National Association of Home Builders found that bathroom remodels are the most popular remodeling projects. But just because bathroom remodeling projects are popular doesn’t mean they’re easy to endure. Knowing what to expect during a bathroom remodel can help homeowners get through the renovation process.
Cost
Bathroom remodeling projects can be expensive. According to Remodeling magazine’s “Cost vs. Value 2019” report, a
mid-range bathroom remodeling project cost an average of $20,420 in 2019, while an upscale remodel cost just under $64,000. Homeowners should develop budgets for their bathroom renovation projects to determine which type of project they can afford. In addition, setting aside a little extra money for overruns is a wise move that can help homeowners handle any unforeseen expenses that arise during the project.
Noise
Few home renovation projects can be undertaken quietly, and bathroom renovations tend to generate a lot of noise. The noise can be difficult to overcome for professionals who work from home fulltime, and it also can be hard on parents of young children who still nap and don’t yet go to school. Parents of young children may find it best to delay bathroom renovation projects until their children are school-aged and out of the house for most of the day on weekdays.
Mess
The debris generated by bathroom renovation projects is another thing homeowners must prepare for. In addition to preparing for the waste generated by the project, first-time renovators must realize that dust might be a big issue once the project begins. Dust can pose a threat to residents’ overall health, particularly the health of youngsters whose bodies haven’t yet fully developed. As a result, parents of young children may want to schedule renovations during family vacations so their children are exposed to as little dust as possible.
Changes
Few renovations go off without a hitch. Once a project begins, contractors often uncover issues that weren’t noticeable to the naked eye. These issues may increase the cost of completing a project or force homeowners to change their plans to make
the project stay as close to their budgets as possible. Recognizing that these decisions may have to be made on the fly can help homeowners feel more prepared when unexpected issues arise. Bathroom renovation projects are worthwhile investments. Knowing what to expect during a bathroom renovation project can help homeowners handle all the twists and turns that may arise.

The Newseum still exists, and one of its next exhibits is in a hotel suite By Peggy McGlone The Washington Post WASHINGTON — Goodbye $450 million glass and granite palace on Pennsylvania Avenue. Hello ... a onebedroom hotel suite on K Street? The Newseum has three new exhibits on the 19th Amendment opening over the next few weeks, the first since it closed its doors Dec. 31. Pop-up shows at Washington’s two airports and an immersive display in a 12th-floor suite at the Hamilton Hotel offer the first glimpse of its future. The suffrage-themed displays represent a significantly diminished footprint for the long-struggling museum of journalism, which last year sold its building, laid off 88 employees and moved
the remaining staff of about 40 to New Jersey Avenue NW. While on a small scale, these partnerships illustrate how the Newseum plans to emerge from its downsizing to deliver programs that celebrate the importance of the First Amendment. “We are thinking of ways to amplify our mission overall. Not everybody is a museumgoer,” said Newseum Executive Director Carrie Christoffersen. “We are happy to meet people where they are, happy to help them understand the First Amendment.” The future of the splashy Newseum — which opened in 2008 and drew about 10 million visitors over 11 years — has been a mystery since January 2019, when the Free-
dom Forum, the private foundation that created the Newseum and is its primary funder, announced it would sell its building to Johns Hopkins University for $375 million. The museum remained open through 2019. The partnerships with the Hamilton Hotel and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority began last year as satellite offerings intended to draw attention to the Newseum and its downtown site. The exhibit “First Amendment Freedoms: Women Win the Vote” opens Friday at Dulles International and Reagan National airports, replacing displays focused on the fall of the Berlin Wall. The exhibits will remain on view through the fall. “The suffrage exhibit examines all the ways
people used their First Amendment rights, exercised their First Amendment muscles in the fight for the vote,” Christoffersen said. “We wouldn’t see the 19th Amendment without the First.” The suite at the Hamilton Hotel opens March 12 with artifacts from the Newseum and the Barbara Lee Family Foundation. Curated by Samantha Barry, editor in chief of Glamour, the 12th-floor exhibit will feature a pioneering women’s rights newspaper, a 1916 poster making the case for suffrage and a portrait of the four women who have served as U.S. Supreme Court justices, among other items. The suite can be booked starting Sunday. To mark the suite’s debut, the Freedom Forum will host a con-
versation March 12 between Barry and Valerie Jarrett, a former senior adviser to Barack Obama who is a distinguished fellow at the University of Chicago Law School and chairwoman of the board of When We All Vote, a civic organization working to increase participation in elections. The event, “Women’s Leadership on the Political Stage,” will be held at the new offices of the Newseum and Freedom Forum at 300 New Jersey Ave. NW. As they look ahead, Newseum officials note that five exhibits, including ones focused on gay rights, the political influence of rock ’n’ roll, and prizewinning photography, continue to tour the country, keeping the Newseum brand in the public eye. Another airport exhib-

it is planned for the fall, Christoffersen said, although the topic has not been determined. In the meantime, officials are willing to loan pieces of its collection to “institutions whose criteria meet lending guidelines,” according to its website. The Newseum’s transition period, Christoffersen said, will last a few years. “We are looking at opportunities to move in a wider, or different circle, with different potential audiences. Does it make sense to have a single spot, or does it make sense to go out to a wide variety of communities?” she said. “We hope people will come to the suite, go visit the airports, attend the programs as we have them, keep following us on social — all those places.”
