Why the US census tries to count everyone By Marylou Tousignant Stand up, America. It’s time to be counted. In the past week, a letter should have arrived where you live, asking the adult in charge to complete a form called the 2020 Census. The census (pronounced SENsuss) is a once-every-10years tally of everyone living in the United States. It asks who lives in a household, how they are related and their age, race and other information. This is a huge task. It’s important that everyone be counted, because the federal government uses that information to determine how many seats in Congress each state should have. If
a state loses population, it might lose a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. If its population is growing, it might gain a seat. Equally important, census numbers help decide how to divvy up more than $675 billion in federal money each year. Those funds help states and communities build roads, schools, hospitals and fire departments. More than 100 programs, including Head Start and food assistance for low-income people, also rely on the census to direct funds to where the need is greatest. This year marks the 24th national people count, which the Constitution requires be held every 10 years. The first census, in 1790, was early
in the presidency of George Washington. About 650 men set out on foot or horseback to count everyone living in their assigned areas. Washington and the secretary of state, Thomas Jefferson, both thought the final number — nearly 3.9 million people — was low. Quarrels and quibbles have dogged just about every census since then. After all, it isn’t easy getting a snapshot of the entire country for a single day. (Census Day has been April 1 since 1930.) The U.S. population grows by one person every 23 seconds because of births in the nation and arrivals from other countries. People living in rural areas,
the homeless and children who split their time between two homes present challenges to getting an accurate count. The U.S. Census Bureau says that about 1 million kids younger than age 5 were not counted in 2010. That was the highest number for any age group. Officials have tried to simplify this year’s process. For the first time, responses can be made online, as well as by phone and mail. To help people who speak little or no English, officials have prepared guides in 60 languages, plus Braille for the blind. Each head of household — even someone living alone — must fill out a census form or face a fine. No citizenship
question is asked. This has eased the concerns of some who said asking about citizenship would reduce the response rate of immigrants and result in less funding for their communities. The Census Bureau is required by law to protect people’s privacy. No one will be identified by name when officials analyze the numbers the census collects. But for anyone tempted not to respond, know this: The people who are census-takers are like a dog looking for that tasty bone he buried. They don’t give up easily. Ignore their letter, and more will follow, because they really want everyone to be counted.

As coronavirus fears rise, marketers pitch dubious remedies By Peter Whoriskey The Washington Post It’s not just Jim Bakker selling a virus killer in a bottle. Thousands of sales pitches, aimed at a fearful U.S. populace, are offering good news about the coronavirus. On websites, over the phone, and in email, the pitchmen are advertising a remedy of one kind or another: some are based on herbs, some on “heat technology,” some on salt particles, others on silver, one on special toothpaste. They’re selling vaccines and diagnostic tests, too. Miracle cures and other preparations for the coronavirus is an industry that is growing quickly, though not quite as quickly as the virus. Complaints of potential coronavirus scams doubled in a week’s time, Federal Trade Commission officials said on Monday, to 7,800. By

comparison, the number of U.S. deaths due to coronavirus has been doubling even more rapidly — roughly every three or four days. Seeking to suppress the burgeoning field, the FTC and the Food and Drug Administration in recent weeks have been sending form letters to companies warning of potential legal action. “There currently are no vaccines, pills, potions, lotions, lozenges or over-thecounter products available to treat or cure COVID-19,” the letters say. “Thus, the claims cited above are not supported by competent and reliable scientific evidence. You must immediately cease making all such claims for products that you advertise, market, sell, or otherwise promote or make available in the United States.” Otherwise, the letters
threaten, there could be legal action. Yet the reports keep coming in, hundreds a day, a testament both to the desperation of Americans for some way to prepare for the virus and the ingenuity and breadth of the putative cures. One of the first cited by federal officials was the Jim Bakker Show, a television program hosted by the famed televangelist, to whom federal authorities issued a warning on March 6 about his claims about something called “Silver Sol Liquid.” The show was advising people to put the liquid in a nebulizer and inhale it because “it can kill any of these known viruses,” according to the government filing. But that was just the beginning. Here’s just a sampling of the written pitches that have been cited by federal authori-

ties since then: A nasal spray known as Corona-Cure “contains an antiseptic that will kill the virus on contact before it is able to enter your body.” An ad for something called an “Immune Tonic” boasts that “natural antiviral herbs boost immunity & decrease virus virulence to achieve herd immunity.” And like Bakker’s pitch, another one offers the healing powers of silver: “Wellness!! Vital Silver!!! Simple!!! Go on the offense this year against viruses including the Coronavirus — it’s simple!” As outlandish as these claims may seem to the skeptical, the coronavirus may have made some people more willing to believe in miracle cure. “Fear is a powerful motivator,” said Monica Vaca, head of the FTC division that collects our consumer complaint
data. “When people are stressed out ... that’s going to be an appealing offer.” Of the 7,800 consumer complaints filed so far, officials said, many are simply about vacations cancelled because of the coronavirus. Others are about toilet paper and other supplies that are offered and never arrive. And some sound vaguely government related. “Thank you for calling Coronavirus Hotline,” goes one phone pitch recorded on the FTC website under the heading “Scammy Calls
About the Coronavirus. “Because of limited testing we are first taking Medicare members. Earn a Free [inaudible] test for you or for you and your spouse.” And another: “The Families First Coronavirus Response Act has made coronavirus testing more accessible immediately. Coronavirus should drive new developments in robotics By Erin Blakemore The Washington Post The COVID-19 pandemic is pushing human bodies — and human ingenuity — to their limits. As patients flood emergency departments and health care workers struggle to respond, an international group of robotic experts is making a case for some electronic intervention.
In an editorial in the journal Science Robotics, they argue that COVID-19 could drive new developments in robotics — and that the devices could help with more effective diagnosis, screening and patient care. If the thought of robotic assistants sounds futuristic, it isn’t: Robots already have been enlisted in the fight against the
virus. In Hong Kong, a fleet of miniature robots disinfects the city’s subways; in China, an entire field hospital was staffed by robots designed to relieve health care workers. In the United States, robots played a role in the country’s first known case of COVID19. One outfitted with a stethoscope and a
microphone was used with a 35-year-old man in Everett, Wash., who was confined to an isolated unit after showing symptoms of the coronavirus. He later made a full recovery. “Already, we have seen robots being deployed for disinfection, delivering medications and food, measuring vital signs, and assisting
Easter
border controls,” the researchers write. They identify plenty of other ways to use robots in the pandemic response. Robots could assist with testing and screening; already, researchers have created a device that can identify a suitable vein and perform a blood draw. Or they could take over hospital disinfection
entirely, providing continuous sterilization of high-touch areas with UV light. The researchers hope COVID-19 will catalyze robotics research for the sake of public health. But it isn’t as simple as pressing a power button: It will take a significant investment for specialized robots to hit the market in time to save lives.

Work together to contain COVID-19
By Andrew Ellsworth, MD With the coronavirus causing school to be canceled, my son brought his schoolwork home. He shared with us a Greek mythology worksheet about Pandora’s Box. If you aren’t familiar, the Greek god Zeus gave a wedding present to beautiful Pandora but instructed her not to open it. Like many of us, impatience and curiosity got the best of her and she opened it anyway which caused a lot of new programs.
Similarly, with COVID19, this new virus is already out of the box. This is a global pandemic and we are being asked to be patient and conform to the social distancing to help slow down the spread. This is our current challenge. Every day we hear about sporting events, concerts, schools and travel plans being canceled. This is the best-known method to slow the spread of COVID-19. The less we are mixing and mingling, the less the
virus is spreading. When we slow the spread, we give our healthcare systems the best chance at having the resources on hand to keep up with the number of people who need help at any given time. In areas of the world where cases of COVID19 were allowed to spike, the health care systems are overwhelmed. Some hospitals don’t have enough beds, enough ventilators, enough medicine to treat everyone that needs help.
They don’t have enough masks and gowns to protect their staff. In these situations, doctors are having to decide who gets treatment and who doesn’t. Thankfully, of those who become infected, possibly 80 percent will have only mild symptoms. Some may not have symptoms at all. However, we need to understand that some will become very sick and some will die. Unlike influenza, COVID-19 is a new virus. Therefore,
none of us have immunity from the past or from immunizations. There is no herd immunity. That is why events are canceled. That is why social distancing is urged. Since most people will only have mild symptoms and some people may not have symptoms at all, the virus can be spread easily without us realizing. We all need to be patient and follow the instructions from health officials. By doing so, we
can hopefully prevent a large spike with a lot of sick people at once and avoid a worst case scenario. My son’s main lesson from his school lesson was that despite the sickness and problems that were released, Pandora closed the lid and held some hope inside the box. I have hope that together we will contain this virus and, in the end, this, too, shall pass. Andrew Ellsworth, MD, is part of The Prairie Doc team of physicians and currently practices family medicine in Brookings.

Metcalf and Rupert Everett, have since been abandoned. Others that were in previews, such as the new musical “Six” and a gender-reversed revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s “Company,” remained in limbo. The Tonys are the single most important marketing event on the theater calendar. It’s not a guarantee by any means, but a Tony for best play — and especially best musical — can mean the difference between millions at the box office and an early closing. Last year’s Tony winner for best musical, “Hadestown,” has been a robust commercial success,
hugely boosted by the eight trophies it collected last June. Even for shows that don’t win, the national exposure that even a sliver of the three hours of network airtime confers amounts to vital advertising; the ceremony attracts several million viewers each year. New musical productions pay for the opportunity to display their tuneful wares on the telecast, and the right song might propel even an also-ran to some cashregister comfort. Broadway producers had said they were hoping to resume the season during the week of April 13, but as the virus’ toll continued to

rise dramatically in New York City, the certainty rose that the notion was wishful thinking. Some shows, such as a forthcoming pair by Roundabout Theatre Company — a revival of Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori’s “Caroline, or Change” starring Sharon D. Clarke, and a new play, Noah Haidle’s “Birthday Candles” with Debra Messing — have been pushed back to the fall. Several other shows were scheduled to open before the Tony nominations deadline at the end of April. A new date for the Tonys will be announced “once Broadway opens again,” the Tonys’ statement said.

Roofing materials transform the look and functionality of a home
W
hen renovating a home, homeowners may not give ample thought to the roof unless there is a leak or another sign of damage. It’s easy to forget about the roof when materials are working properly. Some people put off replacing or repairing a roof simply because of the costs of such undertakings. However, the right roof can improve the appearance of a home and provide protection against the elements, potentially preventing damage to a home’s interior as well. Roofing materials have evolved over the years, but the most common type of roofing material is the asphalt shingle. These shingles are a relatively modern invention, with the first “asphalt prepared roofing” serving as a forerunner to asphalt shingles, appearing in the late 1800s. Roofing materials will need to meet a particular area’s fire codes and must be able to withstand any extreme weather conditions common to the geographic region where the home is located. Certain roofing materials may be heavier than others and may require
special framing. Work with an experienced roofing contractor to learn more about your available options and to shed light on any special installation or maintenance issues to consider before construction begins. The following are just some of the roofing materials homeowners may want to consider.
