Chess a life-changer for young immigrant By Lela Nargi The Washington Post Nine-year-old Tani Adewumi doesn’t remember being interested in many games for the first few years of his life. That changed when his older brother, Austin, showed him how to play chess. “I liked it because he taught me,” Tani said of Austin, who is now 16. Playing on a homemade board at their house in the West African country of Nigeria, with cutout paper pieces, Tani and Austin’s games may not have met official chess regulations. But they paved the way for Tani to become a chess champion.
In 2017, Tani and his brother and their parents fled their home country. A terrorist group called Boko Haram was threatening the family. The Adewumis eventually wound up in New York City, where they lived in a homeless shelter. It was safe there, but their rooms were small and dark, and the shelter had a lot of rules. There was a bright spot to all this, though. P.S. 116, Tani’s new school, offered chess lessons. Tani wasn’t too excited about them at first; they weren’t like the chess he played with Austin. “You might lose when you start and think, ‘This game is bad,’ “ Tani says. “But
if you focus, you will start to understand and stick with it.” Tani stuck with it long enough to be invited to join a chess club. He then got good enough to compete at tournaments. In 2019, he beat 73 other young players in his division to win the New York State chess championship. As cool as that was, the championship also got people interested in his story. After Tani was interviewed for the New York Times about his win, people started donating money to help his parents. Soon they moved into their own apartment. And in April, Tani’s book about his life, called “My Name Is Tani ...
and I Believe in Miracles,” will be published. Tani now has a chess rating of 2,059; that means he’s getting close to the master rating of about 2,200. To get there, he’ll continue to play chess seven days a week, for as many as 3 1/2 hours a day. He can do a lot of his practice on a computer or by reading books. So having to stay home from school and chess club because of the coronavirus pandemic isn’t slowing him down. What does he like to do aside from play chess? “Sleep,” Tani says. He also likes to read Geronimo Stilton books and play Word
Search on his mom’s smartphone. He likes Nigerian food most, especially the country’s national dish, jollof rice, which is made with tomatoes and spices. But while living in New York, he’s become a fan of Chinese fried rice. “It’s not like jollof rice at all, but it tastes good,” he says. Tani is happy to report that he and Austin still play chess — although a few things have changed. They now have a real board and pieces. And Austin almost always loses to his little brother. LEARN HOW TO PLAY Are you interested in learning to play chess? Tani says these are the most important parts
of the game: Thinking: Focus on your own moves, which moves your opponent might make, and “how to do your own plan,” Tani says. Figuring Strategy: out what your plan is going to be is everything. All those hours of playing chess games on the computer and reading chess books can really help. Calculating: According to Tani, “You need to learn to ‘see’ what your opponent’s ideas are.” Most of all, says Tani, “If you love this game 100 percent, you are going to be good at it.”

Graduation to be at drive-in theater By Perry Stein The Washington Post When Superintendent Nathan Barrett called the local drive-in movie theater last Thursday to try to salvage his Pennsylvania school district’s graduation ceremony, the owner of the establishment seemed

But Barrett and the owner of the Garden Drive-In managed to figure it out, and on June 4, the nearly 200 seniors and their families will drive to the theater, remain in their cars, and the students will receive their diplomas — or symbolically receive them, depending on what the guidance is at the time from the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention. Barrett, in his first year leading the 2,000-student school system, said he is waiting to determine whether students will be permitted to leave their vehicles when their names are called to collect their diplomas from an administrator. If not, he said, the school would ship diplomas to students.

The extended closures have threatened rituals like prom and graduation. “Students are reaching the apex of their academic career, and they are still receiving the ceremony without having a drastic delay,” Barrett said. “I’m trying to strike while the iron is hot and they are still

shrink by as much as a third, according to some estimates. The national figures line up with state-level numbers. Last week, a trade group in California reported a drop of 60 percent in combined gasoline and diesel sales in urban areas and 35 percent in farm markets from early March through March 27. Trade groups in Texas and Florida reported big-city gasoline sales down by half. European countries are also taking a hit. Gasoline demand fell 83 percent on an annual basis in Spain during the week ended March 29, accord-
ing to pipeline operator CLH Group. In the U.K., gasoline sales in late March were down by 66 percent, compared with an average during the previous two months, the U.K. Petrol Retailers Association said. A survey of Dutch car dealers, driving schools and transport companies found that respondents lost almost half of their revenue on average as a result of the virus, according to industry group Bovag, which conducted the study. “The Netherlands really has come to a standstill,” said Bovag spokesman Tom Huyskens. “Only those that
Danish parents threaten to boycott plan to ease lockdown for school kids By Morten Buttler Bloomberg Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen says her government’s efforts to fight COVID-19 have been so successful that the country may now be facing a broader rollback of its lockdown than originally planned. Speaking to reporters in Copenhagen on Tuesday, Frederiksen said her Social Democrat administration will start talks in parliament immediately to decide how much more of Denmark’s economy can be opened. “We’ve made it through the first half,” she said. “But it’s a very, very important principle that we don’t proceed too fast.” On Wednesday, Denmark will release its youngest citizens from a month-long lockdown in a move that has already fueled considerable controversy.
Babies will return to daycare centers, kindergartens will open their doors, and primary schools will resume in-class lessons for children up to the age of 13. The government says the move, which follows signs that Denmark’s early COVID-19 restrictions paid off, will let parents focus on their jobs and keep the economy going. But the model has drawn a good deal of criticism. A Facebook group of parents quickly got over 40,000 supporters with the rubric, “My child won’t be a lab rat!” They say there are too many unknowns about COVID19 for it to be safe to expose their children to the risk of contagion. Many parents have threatened to boycott the government’s plan. Denmark is adopting a different approach to Austria, which on Tues-
day became the first European Union nation to roll back its lockdown by opening some shops, while leaving its schools closed. Businesses have applauded Frederiksen’s approach. Lars Sandahl Sorensen, director of the Confederation of Danish Industry, called the prime minister’s Tuesday announcement “a good piece of news in a difficult time.” But the different models across countries show how little agreement there is on how best to handle the ongoing crisis. Denmark has fielded expressions of interest from other EU nations on its decisions around COVID-19, according to a government official who’s not authorized to be cited by name. Denmark, like other countries, is weighing the health risks against the catastrophic economic damage of
a protracted lockdown. Frederiksen’s government estimates a slow return to normal would wipe 6 percent off GDP, double the contraction seen in a quick reopening of the economy. “It’s far too simplistic to treat health and economy as opposing interests,” Frederiksen, whose popularity has soared in recent weeks, said. Opening too soon could result in COVID-19 spreading faster, which would ultimately hurt the economy, she said.

Gilead’s experimental drug shows ‘hopeful’ signs Remdesivir used in small group of coronavirus patients By Christopher Rowland The Washington Post A majority of a small group of patients showed improvements after being treated with an experimental coronavirus treatment made by Gilead Sciences, bolstering hopes for finding a treatment for the disease, according to a study published Friday in the New England Journal of Medicine. The group of patients received the antiviral drug remdesivir as part
of a “compassionate use’’ trial, not a double-blind placebo-controlled trial that would offer more definitive evidence. The cohort was small, only 53 patients in the United States and around the world. Those limiting factors prevent scientists from declaring that the drug works. Still, the improvements offered positive news about a drug seen by global health authorities as offering the best shot at becoming a treatment for the disease. Thirty-six patients out of 53 — or twothirds — showed improvement in oxygen
support, trial authors said. Seventeen of 30 patients who were on ventilators were able to be taken off the life-support machines. “We cannot draw definitive conclusions from these data, but the observations from this group of hospitalized patients who received remdesivir are hopeful,” said Jonathan Grein, director of Hospital Epidemiology, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, and lead author of the journal article. “We look forward to the results of controlled clinical trials to potentially validate these findings.” While 68% of the
patients showed improvement in the level of oxygen support they needed, 13% died, the NEJM study said. That 13% compares favorably to mortality rates of 17% to 78% in China among severely ill patients, the authors wrote. Gilead’s stock has been bolstered for weeks by expectations over remdesivir. Remdesivir was discovered by Gilead in the hunt for antiviral drugs about a decade ago, and the National Institutes of Health has partnered with the company to explore its benefits. It was shown to work against an array of viruses in laboratory
tests. It showed effectiveness in primates infected with Ebola but failed in a trial in the Democratic Republican of Congo in humans with the deadly disease. It has shown effectiveness as a preventive therapy in primates for MERS, which is a coronavirus cousin of the Covid-19 virus. There are no treatments approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat coronavirus, but the FDA has granted an emergency use authorization for the use of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine, two decadesold anti-malarial drugs.

There is scant evidence that the therapy works, but President Donald Trump repeatedly has boosted the promise of the drugs. Even while multiple full clinical trials of remdesivir continue, Gilead has been swamped with requests for “compassionate use’’ of the drug. Under compassionate use rules, physicians can obtain experimental drugs for their seriously ill patients when there is nothing else to try. Gilead said last week that it had enough of the experimental drug on hand to treat up to 140,000 people under compassionate use programs.

XCOM is back with 2K soon releasing new standalone title By Elise Favis The Washington Post 2K Games announced Tuesday morning that a new digital-only, standalone entry to the XCOM series, called XCOM: Chimera Squad, is coming April 24. XCOM (originally known as X-COM) is a turn-based, tactical series that began back to the 1990s, and was re-imagined by 2K, beginning in 2012 with XCOM: Enemy
Unknown. With XCOM: Chimera Squad, fans return to familiar turn-based strategy encounters as they lead squads through enemy confrontations. It is neither a sequel nor expansion, 2K explained. Set five years after XCOM 2′s events, XCOM: Chimera Squad sees humans, hybrids and aliens all working together in hopes of finding peace and co-existence. But those
ideas aren’t widely supported by everyone in this universe. Chimera Squad is an elite force of different races that band together to fight against and destroy these threats to society. In XCOM: Chimera Squad, players take control of 11 different agents that each have their own personalities and tactical abilities. XCOM 2′s Viper, an alien whose long tongue can pull enemies out into the open,
in an allotted time. “With XCOM: Chimera Squad, we felt there were exciting gameplay opportunities yet to be discovered within the XCOM universe,” Mark Nauta, lead Designer at Firaxis Games, said in a press release. “Gameplay like Breach Mode, interleaved turn order, and the introduction of agents as fully fleshedout characters will revolutionize how the game plays while still retaining the combat expe-
returns in this entry. The game also comes with some of its own unique twists. Breach Mode, for example, is a new combat phase where you can assign specific agents to different areas of the map and coordinate their plans of assault with skills specific to this mode. When out of combat, players will also work at a headquarters, where they manage operations like tasks, investigations and agent assignments
rience that makes the XCOM series so loved by gaming communities around the world.” XCOM: Chimera Squad is launching exclusively for PC, with a limited-edition introductory price of $9.99 as part of a sale “celebrating the strength of the brand and support of its global community,” read the press release. Once the sale ends on May 1, XCOM: Chimera Squad will sell for $19.99.
