DoubleTree releases chocolate chip cookie recipe By Natalie B. Compton The Washington Post It’s not uncommon for hotels to make signature amenities available for guests to take home. You can transform your house into a vacation with touches like the Westin Hotels & Resorts’ Heavenly Bed, or the Ritz-Carlton’s destination-specific candles. Now, DoubleTree by Hilton is helping the world recreate its checkin experience by releasing the recipe for its famous chocolate chip cookies for the first time. “A warm chocolate chip cookie can’t solve everything, but it can bring a moment of comfort and happiness,” Shawn McAteer, senior vice president and global head of DoubleTree by Hilton, said in a statement. With the exception of National Cookie Day (Dec. 4),

DoubleTree cookies had been reserved for hotel guests. The recipe yields 26 of the cookies and calls for ingredients such as lemon juice and rolled oats. Anyone allergic to nuts can omit the walnuts, the brand tweeted. And those intimidated

ture since. “It has this cult following,” writes Stuart Foster, the former vice president of global brands for Hilton, in the book “Talk Triggers: The Complete Guide to Creating Customers With Word of Mouth.” The hashtag
#doubletreecookies has more than 5,000 posts on Instagram, with social media users posting photos of the amenity captioned with gushing praise. “I just came for the cookie,” one user wrote. “Never not eating this cookie,” wrote another.
Every year, DoubleTree hotels use more than 1.2 million pounds of chocolate chips to make their treats, and more than 483 million cookies have been handed out to date. The recipe is available at newsroom.hilton. com/doubletree.

New to Zoom? Learn how to protect your calls Drew Harwell The Washington Post Millions of people are turning for the first time to the video-call app Zoom as the coronavirus lockdowns upend their way of life. But some are also making mistakes that could leave their privacy and security at risk, and thousands of Zoom video calls have now been left publicly viewable on the open Web. Here’s how to protect your videos: 1. Do you need to record? Zoom allows people to live-stream their meet-
ings and doesn’t store the content of those calls, according to its privacy policy. But a call “host,” who starts the meeting, can decide to record the call, either to save it to their own computers or upload it to Zoom’s servers. Participants on a call are notified through audio and video when a host decides to record; if you don’t want to be recorded, you can ask the host to stop recording or leave the call. If you’re a host, the easiest way to protect your videos is not to record them in the first place.
2. Consider renaming the file. When Zoom saves a video to a host’s computer, it gives the recording a default file name that a stranger can easily predict and then search for through one of the free search engines that scans open Web directories and online file services. If you don’t want to give away that the file
was recorded via Zoom, consider using a random file name or calling it something unique. 3. Watch where you post it. Zoom allows people to upload their recordings onto the popular online file sites run by Amazon, Dropbox and Google, as well as the video sites of YouTube and Vimeo. If you don’t want the file to be public, make sure
your accounts on those sites are set to private or protected by a password. If someone attempts to find the file, the site will deny them access. 4. These other settings can help. Zoom offers lots of ways to protect your calls from snoops and trolls, but many of the settings (which you can find here) can be confusing. A few tips you might like:

► Don’t publicly share your Zoom “Meeting ID.” Send it directly to the people you want on the call. ► Set a password for the meeting, then share that only with the right people. ► Make sure “screen sharing” is set to “Host Only.” That prevents other people on the call from abruptly blasting text or images onto the other participants’ screen — a favored tactic of “zoombombing” trolls. ► Use the “waiting room” feature. It prevents new participants from joining the call until the host approves. ► Use a “virtual background” if you want to cover up everything behind you with some other image or video. It’s pretty fun.

‘The Man Who Tried to Feed the World’: PBS American Experience
Spring in for
of how unintended consequences unraveled a legendary achievement. It’s easy to understand why Borlaug’s ideas held so much promise: The variety of wheat the scientist created resisted rust, a fungal disease that was responsible for devastating crop epidemics in the developing world. With the help of Borlaug’s hybrid wheat and plentiful water, pesticides and chemical fertilizer, farmers could produce enormous yields in places where crops were once considered untenable. As starvation in India,
Mexico and elsewhere was avoided by plentiful grain, Borlaug’s vision shaped the modern food system. But his achievements left a bitter aftertaste. Borlaug’s methods took a toll on the environment, contributing to groundwater depletion, desertification and soil erosion. Critics blame debt, displacement and ongoing malnutrition in India and elsewhere on a revolution they say was anything but green. It’s one thing to read about the hunger and desperation that so moved Borlaug, but actually seeing the

images of starving people helps you understand why his brand of agricultural capitalism once seem so sensible. But the documentary, directed by Rob Rapley, questions Borlaug’s achievement even as it explains it. Should governments have bought into Borlaug? Why does hunger persist in a world that produces more than it can consume? “The Man Who Tried to Feed the World” was in PBS’s lineup long before the coronavirus pushed the American food system into crisis, forcing farmers to get
rid of foods they usually sell to the now-struggling restaurant industry and sparking unsettlingly empty shelves in a nation that produces more than it can con-
sume. But the questions it provokes couldn’t have come at a more fitting — or uneasy — moment. It’s streaming free at PBS.org and the PBS Video app.

San Diego Comic-Con canceled because of coronavirus By David Betancourt The Washington Post The coronavirus pandemic has forced the cancellation of San Diego Comic-Con for the first time in the event’s half-century history. The announcement was made Friday on the Comic-Con website. The event has become a rite of summer for fans of comic book culture, attracting around 135,000 last year. Those who had already purchased badges for
entry have the option to receive a full refund or have their tickets transferred to next year’s SDCC, which, for now, is scheduled to take place July 22-25, 2021. “Continuous monitoring of health advisories and recent statements by the Governor of California have made it clear that it would not be safe to move forward with plans for this year,” the statement said. SDCC has gone from its 1970 origins of primarily
catering to the bag-emand-board-em comicbook collecting crowd to becoming a major machine in the entertainment industry. Since the dawn of the current era of superhero cinema, fans could annually look forward to major SDCC announcements from Marvel Studios and DC Entertainment. The two giants would save their biggest news and sneak-peek movie trailers for Saturdays in Comic-Con’s Hall H,
considered to be SDCC’s exclamation point. Now that superheroes are part of binge-able shows, major streamers such as Netflix (during its brief union with Marvel) and Amazon (which distributes the raunchy “The Boys”) have used SDCC as a blowhorn to attract a growing fan base looking for more than just a trip to the movies. Many of the year’s big Hollywood superhero moments have already
been postponed. Sony’s “Bloodshot” was the long-awaited emergence of Valiant Comics on the big screen. The movie debuted March 13 but was made available for on-demand purchase on March 24 after theaters across the country began closing. Marvel Studios’s “Black Widow,” scheduled for a May release, was moved to Nov 6. WB/ DC’s “Wonder Woman” sequel, “Wonder Woman 1984,” was pushed later in the summer, to

August 14. The Comic-Con news is especially hard for the comic book industry, which is already dealing with potential store closings nationwide, while major publishers like Marvel and DC, and their primary distributor, Diamond, have temporarily stopped production. Even amid the glare of the Hollywood lights, SDCC is still a premiere stop for the top comicbook writers and artists.

Big books to read during the quarantine By Daniel W. Drezner The Washington Post opinion Speaking personally, the current situation life of inside the house is somewhat akin to when I lived in eastern Ukraine in the early 1990s. Sources of entertainment were scarce for me in the pre-World Wide Web days. My command of Russian was not great, and what was on television back then consisted mostly of Mexican telenovelas dubbed into Russian. The only English-language entertainment available to me was BBC Radio. That left me with the books I had brought. Big books that I knew

2016. One wonders who will write the equivalent book of the current crisis a decade from now. Jill Lepore, “These Truths: A History of the United States.” Single-volume histories of the United States are rare these days. Popular historians write tomes about great Americans, and professional historians write about the country’s myriad flaws. What is impressive about Lepore’s narrative is how effortlessly she weaves both strands into a single compelling narrative. I finished this book with a more clear-eyed and yet more hopeful view of the United States.

Chuck Wendig, “Wanderers.” An epic work of popular fiction about, well, a global pandemic. You should not read this book if you are already freaked out about the current unpleasantness. If you are leaning into the pandemic genre, however, this book is absorbing. Wendig does an excellent job with misdirection. Without revealing any spoilers, what you might think is the source of the pandemic at the start of the book is very different from what you think at the end. The most riveting passages are in the book’s second half, once the pandemic has begun to affect society in a serious way. Enjoy!
