“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”
Tired of looking for your hammer? Get organized. By Nicole Anzia The Washington Post
B
ecause hand tools usually aren’t used daily, they’re often lower on the list of home organizing priorities. But the thing about tools is that when you need one, you need it now. In most households, tools are not stored in just one place — some may be kept in the garage, others in the basement, a few things in a shed, and others shoved into random closets or drawers. This causes frustration when you’re motivated to get something done and makes it difficult to keep track of what you own. Here are some organizing strategies.
Storage location
It makes sense to keep some basic tools where you use them most. I recommend people have a hammer, screwdriver, tape measure, flashlight and picture
hangers on every floor of their home. Tell family members where these tools are kept and emphasize that each set is to be kept together on each floor. The decision about where to keep other tools, including larger, handheld tools such as saws, drills and other power tools and wrenches, as well as smaller pieces of hardware such as screws, nails and washers, should be based on where they will be used the most. Whether that’s a shed, garage or the basement depends on where you have the space to store them safely. The tendency is often to tuck tools away in a far corner of the basement or outside in a shed, but if they’re difficult to access, it makes more sense to keep them somewhere well-lit and inside. And as with all home organizing, try to have a designated space for everything.
Storage options
Wherever you decide to store tools, some type of industrial shelving will be useful. There are different sizes and varieties available at hardware stores to accommodate large tools and bins filled with smaller tools and supplies. Many also come with hooks to store saws, cords, a level, etc. Adjustable shelves will give you the most flexibility to grow into or to store other things if you don’t need the whole unit for tools. Stackable bins are ideal for maximizing the space on your shelves and allowing for quick access to tools and small hardware. Label with its contents to ensure items are put away properly and you can see at a glance what you have. If you want something portable, such as a small toolbox or tool caddy, it can also be stored
on the shelves and will be easy to load and unload. Tool chests and cabinets look perfect for keeping everything in order, and peg boards with hooks are an old standby. But unless you or someone in your family is a serious craftsman, most people don’t need something so elaborate taking up so much space. Open shelving and bins will give you the most flexibility.
Painting and gardening tools
Paint supplies such as rollers, pans and painters’ tape can be stored in a labeled bin. Experts recommend putting the original covers back on clean paint brushes and storing them either hanging up or lying flat. If you no longer have the original packaging, wrapping the brush in a paper towel will work. Store paint cans
in places where the temperature doesn’t get too hot or too cold. So not next to the dryer in the laundry room or next to the heater in a utility room and probably not in a garage or shed, where temperatures vary greatly by season. A shed or a garage are the best places to store gardening tools, given their proximity to the outdoors. Also, making a mess is less of a worry. A specified place in a basement can also work well. Tools such as rakes, hoes and shovels are best kept on hooks or in a rubber tool tower. Small hand tools can be hung on hooks on a pegboard or corralled in a bucket or caddy. Seed packets will last longest in plastic bags or an airtight container. It’s also best to store plant food in a closed container to keep out moisture. A large pail with a lid works well.
Pieces of furniture hardware
If you’re going to keep the extra pieces that often accompany a new piece of furniture, put them in a Ziploc bag with assembly instructions, and label the bag immediately. There is little chance you’ll ever use them, but if you’re going to the trouble of keeping them, label the bag so you can easily find them. Store the various plastic bags in a bin labeled “Furniture Hardware.” When it comes to organizing tools, you want to be able to find what you need and know what you have. It’s so hard to find the time and energy for home-improvement tasks, but if you find yourself with some free moments and feel motivated to work on a project, you don’t want to waste any time searching for tools and supplies.

An app introducing millennials to gardening can go only so far By Adrian Higgins The Washington Post
S
ome children garden at the knee of their parents or grandparents, and by the time they are young adults and ready to start their own plant adventures, a lot of the horticulture comes naturally. But such lucky people are thinner on the ground than in previous generations, I suspect, even though there has never been a more urgent time to introduce younger folks to the power of the plant kingdom, given the issues of climate change. As the naturalist and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, last week, “The connection between the natural world and the
urban world ... since the Industrial Revolution has been remote and widening.” Attenborough has spent a 60-year career trying to narrow that gap in television programs that began as a form of entertainment and, in recent years, have become a cry for an ailing planet. “The Garden of Eden,” Attenborough says, “is no more.” He speaks with such affable authority that resistance is futile. So we must invent and inhabit our own gardens of Eden, but where and how to begin if you are in your 20s in an apartment or 30s in your first home with a bit of land? My general advice is to start small, learn from your successes and mistakes, and take the long view. Don’t think about creating a show garden; worry
about whether the house plant you repotted is set high enough and the soil around it is firm. If you kill something, don’t despair; grow something else. Don’t get one houseplant; get five, or 10. It’s a jungle out there, but plants more than anything else want to live and grow. Gardeners of my generation got advice and inspiration from the pages of magazines and books, and more actively from talks and workshops by seasoned and professional horticulturists and landscape designers. These are still valuable sources, or can be, but today people look to the digital realm for useful images and video. And yet, gardening is essentially a physical and empirical exercise. Your knowledge and tastes develop
one growing season at a time, and I’m sorry, but you won’t learn to garden by looking at a screen. I quickly add that it’s good to get psyched about gardening by listening to a podcast or reading, ahem, a weekly column. There is a role for digital information in getting people started because they are comfortable in this world and because, to be blunt, they have so much to learn. This was the thinking of Mason Day, 28, and Seth Reed, 34, who work for the Ball Horticultural Co., and who saw a need to develop an app — GrowIt — that pairs newbies with more experienced gardeners. Among its features is the ability to dial in your location and find a suitable plant

ital world is threaded into our sinews. It has connected us to others and to information like nothing that has come before. If you are reading this in Australia or Kenya or Pakistan, I salute you and the Web. The connected world, however, comes at a cost. I asked a landscape architect I’ve known for 30 years how his business has changed, and he recounted an episode in which a demanding client had vetoed his proposed tree species for another after looking up the substitute online. Twenty minutes of surfing had trumped decades of expertise and practice. Information is confused with knowledge. Apps such as GrowIt may be of real value to beginners, but what vexes me is that it is not just urbanization that has weakened the link to the natural world. So, too, has digitization.

for a given growing environment. The app was launched in 2015 and has grown steadily, now with approximately 700,000 participants, Day said. He bristled at my suggestion that people simply learn gardening by doing and said he works in an industry that assumes, mistakenly, that everyone has an innate knowledge of plants. Millennials, strapped for time and cash, need to be primed before they can take on something “ that’s completely outside their wheelhouse.” In developing the app, they showed 15 volunteers, most under 35, two common annuals and a hydrangea. “No one had any idea what the plants were,” Day said. “None.” Point taken. This rubber breakthrough could preserve rain forests, save water
A
By Adrian Higgins The Washington Post
ztecs tapped the sap of Hevea brasiliensis much as American Indians bled sugar maples for their sweet syrup. But the hevea rubber tree yielded something quite inedible — a thick, milky liquid we call latex. The Aztecs used it to make a hard, dense ball for playing games. In the 19th century, inventors and engineers figured out how to make rubber flex (add sulfur under heat) and to modify it from a solid ring to a tube filled with air. These breakthroughs led to the world as we know it — on the move on pneumatic tires. Passenger car tires are made from a mix of natural and synthetic rubber
— mostly the latter and derived from petroleum. Truck tires need a greater ratio of natural rubber, and aircraft tires are made wholly of natural rubber. The successful landing of a wide-bodied jet, with its enormous loads, is in large part because of the skill of the pilot and the existence of a spindly jungle tree native to the Amazon. If you don’t want to take a jet, you can see a hevea growing in the Tropics, the central conservatory of the U.S. Botanic Garden at the foot of the U.S. Capitol. Most people pass it by, absorbed by the more imposing palm trees. On a recent spring Saturday, the botanic garden was the scene of the announcement of another rubber breakthrough — the successful harvesting of rubber from a scrubby little shrub

Market research company Nielsen reported last year that adults in the United States spent almost four hours a day on digital platforms and, if you include TV and radio, more than 11 hours per day with media. When I walk down the street and see people glued to their smartphones, I think of a group of symbionts at their digital feeding ports. Alternatively, I think of a beehive, whose workers are driven by an intangible force to serve the colony.
named guayule (why-YOU-lee). This modestly attended talk was given by Gene Lester of the Agriculture Department’s Agricultural Research Service. I got a sense the world was missing something momentous. We’re talking here of the ongoing evolution of the wheel, which is the history of the connecting of human societies, generally considered a good thing. The world has shrunk. So, too, has our understanding of the plant kingdom and how dependent we are upon it. Where do people think rubber comes from? “The rubber fairy,” said Lester, who directs the research service’s product development programs.

One of the great values of gardening is the way it allows us to unplug from the noise and the buzz. And what better symbiosis than one in which we care for the green world and allow it to nurture us, body and soul? As Attenborough said, “It’s not just a question of beauty or interest or wonder. The essential ingredient, essential part of human life is a healthy planet.” Start gardening with an app, if you wish, but move quickly into the garden in all its forms. There, we can work away from global warming and toward being indulgently unplugged.

How to make better, more flavorful burritos at home By Becky Krystal The Washington Post
B
urritos may be one of the ultimate double-edged — ended? — foods. On one hand, you can put just about anything in them. On the other, you can put just about anything in them. Their versatility is hard to beat, but that just means there is much opportunity for missteps. After all, who hasn’t walked away from the line at Chipotle or a restaurant of its ilk with buyer’s remorse about an overstuffed, flavor jumble of a log? As you might expect me to say: You can do better, especially if you do it at home. Here are some things to consider before you get rolling: ► The tortilla. I love a good corn tortilla, but in a burrito? No, thanks. As Christina Chaey points out on Bon Appétit, corn and other grain tortillas
are more likely to tear thanks to their drier texture. Flour tortillas are more pliable, not to mention larger. A 10-inch tortilla is ideal, and assuming you don’t typically bring a tape measure with you to the grocery store, look for labels that say large or burrito-size. My preferred brand, La Banderita, even makes a 12-inch “mega” size, although I stick with its smaller brethren. It helps to have the tortillas warmed slightly (via skillet, microwave or even oven) so that they are flexible enough for rolling. ► The filling. “Everything can go in a tortilla,” says Louie Hankins, founder and owner of Rito Loco and El Techo in Washington. “We’ve done a salmon burrito before,” and even one with spaghetti and meatballs. No matter what you choose, try to make the ingredients as fresh as pos-
sible, Hankins advises, although I won’t be the one to discourage you from using your well-preserved leftovers, either. When it comes to how much you put in, “less is better,” according to Hankins. Too much inside and you not only dilute the flavors but also risk a burrito that breaks or sheds filling with every bite. Try to limit your filling to 1 1/2 cups for a 10-inch tortilla, Better Homes & Gardens says. What your fillings are and the ratio you use is definitely a matter of preference. Hankins doesn’t like to bite into a heap of rice and beans (“We find that when you put all that extra stuff in it, you lose that kick of the freshness of the burrito,” he says), so at Rito Loco, the emphasis is on the meat or protein — 7 ounces of it to be exact, plus 3½ ounces of pico de gallo and 2 ounces of cheese. you like rice and beans, try this formula offered by Peter Fox, one of the founders of Washington’s Burrito Brothers, in The Washington Post way back in 1998: 1/4 cup salsa, 1/2 cup rice, 1/2 cup beans and 1/2 cup meat. Especially if your salsa is thin, you shouldn’t end up with too much filling to break the 1 1/2 cup threshold (by much, anyway). ► The flavors. If you’re going with the less-is-more approach, you want to get the most flavor into every bite. For Hankins, that means delicious meat marinades and sauces. Take the time to give your protein a quick dip, or throw together a blender tomatillo sauce, and you’ll be rewarded with something that tastes great. Plus, making your own sauce will give you extras for more burritos or other meals. I also like this tip from Sarah Larson at the Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts, who suggests seasoning everything, includ-
ing the rice, which you can jazz up with cumin, bay leaves or other spices. Making the rice with broth is another way to amp up the flavor. Fresh herbs — particularly cilantro, unless you are someone who can’t tolerate it — are a high-impact addition that won’t add too much bulk to your burrito. Pickled onions and jalapeños likewise pack a punch in a relatively small package. ► The assembly. Now’s the time to slow down and put everything together. Think about your burrito layers. As food writer Joyce Dodson Piotrowski wrote in The Post in 1996, “even if you put a whole bunch of things in, because you add them layer by layer, not mixing them, you can taste the layers of flavor in every bite, and different flavors in each bite.” Because Hankins prefers his burritos longer and leaner as opposed to short and stubby, he likes making layers about the thickness of a pounded chicken
breast. Cheese goes on first (and also at the end if you love cheese like I do) so that it can be closest to the hot skillet and pico de gallo last to keep it from getting the tortilla soggy. Using warm fillings where appropriate (meat, vegetables, beans, etc.) isn’t just an indicator of freshly made ingredients. It will also make assembly easier. Warm ingredients placed on top of the cheese will help melt it in conjunction with the time you toast it in the skillet. They also mean you don’t have to worry about trying to heat the filling all the way through without burning the tortilla. Of course, then there’s the matter of rolling. Different people have their preferred methods, but the principles are largely the same: Fold in the sides before rolling up for a secure pocket, and keep the roll as tight as you can so everything stays in place. How crevice gardens can act as models of urban sustainability By Adrian Higgins The Washington Post
E
cologically minded gardens are in vogue, which is all to the good. One of the hallmarks of a successful landscape is that it is in harmony with its place, in its flora, planting aesthetic and general mood. But it is worth knowing that the contemporary broad interest in plant naturalism is a relatively recent impulse. For the past century or more, gardeners have wanted to grow plants that were decidedly exotic and spectacularly different; the list includes non-native versions of roses, azaleas, hostas and lilies, for example. Sometimes the craving for exotica meant creating whole new growing environments, none more adventurous than the rock garden. Done well, a rock garden evokes a high country scree. Done badly, that is, hesitantly, it looks as though a dump truck just delivered a load of rubble. Botanically, a rock garden opens up a whole new world. There are some curious and lovely native wildflowers for such a place, though rock garden-

But hang on to your prickly pears. I’ve discovered there is something even more adventurous than a rock garden, a more extreme version called a crevice garden. A while ago, Tony Avent sent me pictures of the crevice garden at his Plant Delights Nursery at Juniper Level Botanic Garden in
Raleigh, North Carolina. A rock garden typically is formed from soil and grit and gravel piled between boulders. A crevice garden, however, uses slabs of stone set vertically and close together. There is less expanse of growing space and virtually no soil as such. Avent’s is remarkable for its size — some 300 feet long and about six feet high — and for its material. Instead of using quarried stone, he used bro-
ken up concrete slabs from a property he was clearing for a new home. This saved hauling 70 cubic yards of material to the landfill. But once he started in 2017, he got crevice fever and in February finished the whole installation using salvaged concrete from four other sites. He estimates the concrete pieces weigh 400,000 pounds. In the photos, the garden looked a bit industrial, and I thought I
should actually see it before passing judgment. So I did, and the verdict? It’s wonderful. The concrete is clearly not natural, but its rhythms and textures are read as an abstract version of a rock formation. This is down to the design sensibilities of Avent’s collaborators, Jeremy Schmidt, the botanic garden’s supervisor of grounds
and research, and rock garden designer Kenton Seth, of Fruita, Colorado. Where once a line of dense old holly trees stood, the crevice garden has given Avent a whole new playground for his unusual plants. He is known for the breadth as well as the depth of his rare plant passions, many of them arid-region plants at home in the crevice garden. These include yuccas, agaves and, yes, prickly pears. Some of his choices will grow only in such a dryscape, but others are found in more conventional garden settings. The latter group includes hardy cactuses and succulents as well as other plants that you might not expect in a rock garden setting, including species of dianthus, penstemon, germander and daphnes. What these plants lack in soil, they gain in the elongation of their roots. A plant that might be eight inches high, huddled between two slabs, could have root strands reaching down several feet.

Da Vinci’s $450 million masterpiece is kept on Saudi prince’s yacht, report says
A
By Katya Kazakina Bloomberg
Leonardo Da Vinci masterpiece, whose whereabouts has been a mystery since it sold in 2017 for a record $450 million, has turned up in an unlikely place, according to Artnet.com. “Salvator Mundi” is being kept on superyacht Serene owned by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, the publication reported Monday, citing two “principals involved in the transaction” that it didn’t identify. Another Saudi prince was said to have purchased the 500-year-old painting on MBS’ behalf at a 2017 Christie’s auction, the New York Times reported previously. Christie’s declined to confirm that report. The Saudi government’s Center for International Communication didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The yacht’s location as of May 26 was in the Red Sea off Sharm el-Sheikh, an Egyptian resort town on the Sinai Peninsula, according to
Bloomberg ship tracking data. While the high seas may not be the best place for a fragile Old Master painting, it’s not uncommon for the super-wealthy to decorate their yachts with trophy art. Joe Lewis hung Francis Bacon’s “Triptych 1974 - 1977,” worth an estimated $70 million, on the lower deck of his yacht, the Aviva. “Salvator Mundi,” whose provenance has been questioned, will remain aboard MBS’ 439-foot Serene until the Saudis create a planned cultural hub in the Kingdom’s Al-Ula region, Artnet said. The project was in an “exploratory phase,” a spokesman for the commission overseeing the plan said in December. Experts at the Louvre have attributed the work to Da Vinci’s workshop, rather than to the artist alone, according to a published report. Celine Dauvergne, a spokeswoman for the Louvre, declined to comment on the painting’s attribution, but said the Paris museum has asked to borrow the work for an October exhibition.

“It forces the roots much deeper,” said Seth, owner of Paintbrush Gardens. Their length increases the plant’s access to moisture and nutrients, often in a partnership with bacteria. “A lot of plants are adapted to absorbing mineral nutrients rather than organic, humic nutrients,” he said. “They get their minerals straight from the rocks.” In the first sections, they used no soil at all, just great quantities of a horticultural-grade aggregate named PermaTill. Many of the plants — 588 hardy cactuses and agaves — did not make it through the winter. This was surprising because the one thing that gets marginally hardy plants through an East Coast winter is the absence of wet soil. This high mortality rate was not down to record levels of rainfall in 2018. Avent and Schmidt discovered that the growing medium was too open, and frigid air was reaching deep into the ground. In winter, the soil temperature 18 inches down is nine degrees warmer than the air temperature, but in the crevice garden, it was only four degrees warmer, Avent said. In subsequent sections they changed the growing mix to include compost and some native soil to fix the problem. Today, 1,500 plants are thriving in

the garden, including more agaves and hardy cactuses, delosperma, arabis and draba — all of which would probably not survive in normal garden beds in central North Carolina. The crevice slabs undulate in waves that give movement to an otherwise unyielding medium. To place them, Schmidt said he set them down with a skid-steer loader above their allotted space and then used gravity to help position them. There is a pleasing tension seeing seemingly delicate, novel beauties such as globularia, with its chivelike blossoms, growing amid such hulking surroundings. When he is designing crevice gardens, Seth says, he conjures a mental image “of a certain mountain range I’ve visited and give it that vibe.” But when tackling this concrete version, he imagined another scenario: A post-apocalyptic city where the plants were taking over the ruins. “A sort of ‘Mad Max’ city after humanity,” he said. This was an organizing idea for the design, but Avent says his crevice garden actually offers a model of urban sustainability — a way of creating beauty in the recycled concrete jungle. “I think it’s a great way to green cities while keeping stuff out of the landfill and exposing people to a whole new palette of plants,” he said. “I hope this will be an inspiration to cities around the world.”

RUBBER From Page 4
The hevea tree, which is related to the milky-sapped poinsettia, is king of the rubber world — other plants can yield latex, including dandelions — but hevea is by far the predominant source of commercial natural rubber. Though the tree is native to the Amazon, most hevea plantations today are in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. For all its market share, hevea has its problems (beyond a leaf blight disease in its original environment). It grows in a fairly narrow equatorial band, takes almost a decade to reach maturity and requires daily scrapings of its exudations. A rubber plantation requires a lot of labor, though I’m sure they’re working on a robot. The need for rubber has never been greater. Lester told the audience that the world
“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”
has more than 1 billion vehicles along with 39,000 aircraft flying about 4 billion passengers a year. Lester shared estimates that by 2030, the number of vehicles will double. The number of air travelers will be just shy of 8 billion. A corresponding increase in hevea production would undoubtedly require the clearing of more tropical rain forest at a time when the planet needs every oxygenating jungle it’s got. Enter guayule. The shrub is native to northern Mexico and the Southwest. As an aside, it has very few close relatives, but one is a great garden plant, a hardy perennial named wild quinine, with clusters of white flowers for weeks in early summer. It does well in difficult, hot and dry sites and draws loads of pollinators. It should be used much more than it is. Guayule is not as pretty, but it is at least as tough. It grows in hot, dry regions, and if it were to become a major source
of rubber, it would flourish in areas of the country where crop options are limited to such things as alfalfa and cotton, both of which require more precious water. Although the rubber tree is carefully cut and tapped, the guayule is chopped to the ground and its branches mashed up to extract the latex. The plant then regrows and can be harvested several more times before depletion. It also produces valuable byproducts, including fuel. Under a $6.9 million government grant, ARS researchers joined other plant scientists and industry experts as part of a consortium looking at the feasibility of guayule production. The five-year effort included the genomic sequencing of Parthenium argentatum for use in picking plants with desired genetic traits — drought tolerance and high latex yield, for example. “We think it’s good for the globe and good for farm-
ers, especially in the desert Southwest where water is dear,” said Colleen McMahan, the ARS’s lead scientist for domestic natural rubber. As part of the study, Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. in Findlay, Ohio, made several hundred tires from guayule rubber and tested them successfully for performance and safety. “A modern radial tire has 27 components, and every one is designed to do something different,” said Chuck Yurkovich, senior vice president for global research and development. “What we had to do was reformulate every component to make it work.” But they succeeded, and “if there was a supply of this material, we could and would put it in our tires,” he said — more specifically, a supply made affordable by scale of agricultural production and processing plants. The economics and investments aren’t there yet. William Niaura, director of collaborations and open inno-
vations for another tire company, Bridgestone Americas, said in an email that guayule would supplement rather than replace hevea rubber. It will take until the middle or end of the next decade for the shrub to be farmed in sufficient quantities, he said, and further development is needed to market its byproducts to make it economically viable. But guayule rubber is already making its way into high-end products because it is considered purer than hevea rubber, offers superior tactile feel for surgical gloves — brain surgeons take note — and doesn’t induce the allergic reactions of hevea. While we wait for guayule rubber to sink or swim, it may be time to plant and enjoy its close cousin, wild quinine. Parthenium integrifolium is guaranteed to transport your mind to a beautiful, swaying, buzzing wildflower meadow, away from the prospect of a world with 8 billion fellow airport users.

What is inulin? By Christy Brissette The Washington Post
F
iber is “the new protein,” according to market research firms. But it could also be the new pain in your stomach. If you’re like most Americans, you’re trying to add more fiber to your diet. That’s a good thing, because the average American gets only half the recommended amount of fiber each day. Manufacturers are responding to consumers’ wishes by adding fiber to a plethora of foods and beverages, including cereals, energy bars, protein supplements, “healthier” cookies, diet ice cream and even bottled water. One of the most prevalent fiber-boosting ingredients is inulin. Like any fiber, it can cause gas, bloating and abdominal pain if consumed too quickly or in large quantities. Many of my clients who have complained about digestive discomfort don’t realize how much inulin they’re consuming each day. Most of them have never even heard of it. Here’s what you should know about inulin, including how much you need and how to determine how much you are getting. — What is inulin? Inulin is a type of prebiotic, a substance that’s used by the microorganisms in your digestive tract and positively influences health. At this point, there is evidence that
three prebiotics can provide health benefits: inulin, also referred to as long-chain inulin; fructooligosaccharide (FOS), a short-chain inulin that’s also called oligofructose, and galactooligosaccharide (GOS). Both inulin and FOS are extracted from chicory root fiber, a natural dietary fiber that is extracted using hot water from a plant that’s part of the dandelion family. GOS is produced from lactose, which is sourced from animals. It also isn’t as well-studied as the other two. Inulin is also found in smaller amounts in whole wheat and some vegetables and fruits, such as asparagus, garlic and bananas. Data from 1999 (the most recent available) puts the average American intake of inulin naturally occurring in food at 2.5 to 3.5 grams a day. Longer-chain inulin has a creamy mouthfeel, so it’s often used to help reduce the fat content in products. Short-chain inulin (FOS) tastes slightly sweet, so it’s used to help reduce some of the sugar and sugar substitutes in foods and beverages. Inulin supplements and some foods and beverages will use a blend of shortand longer-chain inulin. These blends are also commonly used in research. — Digestive pros and cons Chicory root fiber passes through your small intestine and then is fermented by the
bacteria in your large intestine. As noted above, taking in too much too quickly can lead to digestive discomfort — which can happen with any fiber. In addition, some people seem to be more sensitive to inulin and FOS than others, and may need to limit their consumption. Inulin does have some digestive benefits. A blend of short- and long-chain inulin has been shown to reduce discomfort and help with constipation. The fiber increases the amounts of beneficial Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli bacteria in the gut. The European Food Safety Association has approved the claim that consuming at least 12 grams of chicory inulin or FOS a day eases constipation. (There isn’t enough research to state this about GOS.) — Other health benefits Inulin and FOS also may reduce our calorie intake and blood-sugar levels and increase calcium absorption. Chicory root fiber seems to slow down stomach emptying and suppresses appetite signals in the brain, which could help you eat less. In small studies, adults and children of both normal and excess weight who took a supplement of 12 to 16 grams a day consumed fewer calories. A weight-loss study of 44 people with pre-diabetes who were receiving counseling from a dietitian found that the group taking inulin supplements for 18
Why is it suddenly in so many food products?
weeks had a weight loss of 7.6 percent of body weight, compared with a weight loss of 4.9 percent in the group taking cellulose, another type of fiber. Inulin also seems to lower glucose and insulin levels after meals in average-weight and overweight people. And a study of 49 women with Type 2 diabetes found that taking 10 grams of inulin a day compared with 10 grams of maltodextrin (a refined carbohydrate) over eight weeks was associated with a significant reduction in fasting blood sugar and A1C (an average of blood sugars over three months) and insulin levels. Though these findings are exciting, there needs to be more research on the effects of inulin on individuals with pre-diabetes and Type 2 diabetes to know whether it can be helpful in these populations. Regarding calcium, research suggests that getting 8 grams of chicory root fiber a day improves absorption. Chicory root fiber makes the colon more acidic, which increases the surface area that can absorb nutrients and makes more proteins that bind to calcium. A year-long randomized control trial in 100 adolescents conducted at the Agriculture Department’s Children’s Nutrition Research Center at the Baylor College of Medicine found that the teens taking 8 grams

a day of chicory root fiber had higher levels of calcium absorption and higher bone mineral density, showing that the additional calcium that was absorbed was deposited into bone. — The bottom line Though inulin offers benefits as a fiber source and as a prebiotic, keep in mind that the majority of your fiber should be coming from whole foods that provide other nutrients. The goal is to get 25 to 38 grams of fiber a day from food rather than supplements. Holscher suggests keeping it simple. Focus on getting enough fiber overall rather than worrying specifically about getting enough inulin. Including plenty of plantbased foods in your diet will help you get some inulin along with other fiber types. If you’re trying to eat fewer calories or boost calcium absorption, I recommend starting with the basics before adding high-inulin foods and beverages or supplements to your routine. To take in fewer calories, eat plenty of nonstarchy vegetables, increase your overall fiber intake via pulses and small portions of whole grains, consume lean protein sources and up your water intake. For better calcium absorption, make sure you’re taking it with vitamin D. Then you can think about whether chicory root fiber is something that could enhance your diet.
