Scientists think they know why dogs have eyes that tug at our hearts By Karin Brulliard The Washington Post
T
001484215r2
he mournful, pleading, eyebrows-up expression dogs make is so familiar that we have made it into an idiom: puppy-dog eyes. A new study suggests it’s yet another example of dogs’ ability to communicate with people, one that evolved as the animals were domesticated from ancient wolves at least 15,000 years ago. A specific muscle causes the inner-eyebrow raise that makes dogs’ eyes appear bigger and more infant-like and produces a look similar to one humans make when sad. The researchers found that while six deceased dogs they dissected uniformly possessed this muscle, four dissected wolves either did not have it or barely did. They also found that 27 shelter dogs in the United Kingdom did the eyebrow-raise far more often and intensely when interacting with strangers than did nine wolves at two U.K. wildlife parks.
This suggests ancient canines with expressive eyebrows might have elicited nurturing from humans, the authors write, and that care would have given the animals a selection advantage that allowed them to pass on puppy-dog eyes to their descendants. The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences. “What is so provocative about this finding is the likelihood that our unconscious biases shaped the evolution of the dog’s eye musculature,” said Brian Hare, a Duke University evolutionary anthropologist and canine cognition expert, who edited the study but was not involved in the research. “The presence of these anatomical differences between wolves and dogs is a smoking gun for the role of our desire to cooperate and communicate with dogs being a driving force in dog evolution.” The new research built on the authors’ previous work examin-
ing this muscle movement in dogs. One study found shelter dogs that performed the inner eyebrow raise were adopted more quickly than those that did not, in a sort of modern-day demonstration of puppy-dog eyes’ power over humans. Another study found that dogs make puppy-dog eyes more when people are looking. “It’s just that kind of behavior that causes lots of dog owners to think, ‘Oh my gosh, they want something. What do they need?’” Burrows, a biological anthropologist at Duquesne University, said in an interview. Like all the physical variation seen in a species humans essentially engineered, the development of this dog eye muscle happened astonishingly fast, she added: “I’m speculating here, but the process of domestication must produce dog evolutionary changes much more quickly than evolutionary changes that you would see in the wild.” When it comes to
human-dog connections, eyes are important. Dogs make eye contact with people when a problem stumps them; wolves do not. Researchers have found that when they’re gazing into each others’ eyes, both humans and dogs experience a rise in levels of oxytocin — the “love hormone.” The same things happens when mothers and babies make eye contact. The new study also identified another facial difference between wolves and dogs. A muscle that pulls the eyelids toward the ears, which Burrows said happens when dogs are panting and almost appear to be “smiling,” was present in all the dogs dissected except one — the Siberian husky, an ancient breed that is more closely related to wolves. Three of four wolves dissected had it, but it was thinner and probably weaker, the study said. The eyebrow finding raises the possibility that puppy-dog eyes aren’t something humans chose, but
instead that they were a byproduct of domestication. A long-running study on silver fox domestication has demonstrated that certain physical traits — floppy ears, curly tails, mottled coat colors — come along for the ride when people select the tamest animals for breeding. This is called the domestication syndrome, and it’s possible dogs’ eyebrow raise is a part of it, Burrows said. “Domestic dogs were created by humans, and clearly we selected species that weren’t going to bite us or bite our kids,” Burrows said. “So this whole domestication syndrome has features that all link together.” Clive Wynne, a behavioral scientist who directs the Canine Science Collaboratory at Arizona State University, called the study “very interesting, original and thought-provoking.” But to be more convinced, he said, he would want to see results from a larger sample that included more dog breeds and

wolf subspecies, as well as wolves and dogs with varying levels of experience with humans. “Although evolution (domestication) has obviously led to crucial changes between dogs and their wolfy ancestors, how an individual behaves in any moment is also due to its individual life experiences,” Wynne wrote in an email. “A study that describes behavior between dogs or wolves and people has to explain the kinds of life experiences the individuals being tested have undergone.” Burrows said she and her co-authors plan to continue the research, including by looking at other dog breeds, coyotes and domesticated foxes. The shape of a pug’s face is nothing like a collie’s, she noted. “That’s going to potentially dictate how the face can move,” she said. “So as we expand the study and really focus on what the musculature looks like ... I’m really interested to see what kinds of differences we can drill down into.”

At National Zoo, Asian water dragon produces offspring without a mate By Dana Hedgpeth The Washington Post Washington
I
t was the lizard version of a miracle baby. Experts at the National Zoo in Northwest Washington said a female Asian water dragon produced an offspring without a mate. It’s known as “facultative parthenogenesis,” said scientists at the zoo, meaning that “she reproduced without contribution from a male.” A paper on the findings was published
June 5 in the PLOS One scientific journal. In a Twitter message, the zoo said, “Life found a way at our Reptile Discovery Center!” It’s quite a tale of how the baby water dragon came to be. An Asian water dragon is a kind of lizard. Zoo experts said the mama lizard came to the National Zoo in 2006 from the St. Louis zoo when she was 4 months old. Asian water dragons are native to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and southern China.

They have a long tail that is helpful in climbing and balancing themselves. And they use it like a whip to defend against predators, experts said. At the National Zoo, the plan was not to breed her but for her to be an “animal ambassador,” zoo experts said in a statement. She would be used to teach visitors about biology and lizard behavior. Female water dragons, experts said, are known for “laying infertile eggs if they have not bred with a male,” the zoo

“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”
There’s an ugly side to the makeup aisle By Alexis Benveniste, Emily Chasan Bloomberg
H
ealth and beauty products are meant to be aesthetically pleasing. It’s a category in which packaging is as important as ingredients when it comes to standing out in a galaxy of cute little containers. It’s also an industry with a built-in advantage, since looking younger, smelling nicer or simply not having bad breath tends to sell itself. Mix in the omnipresence of its advertising, and you have one of the more reliable sectors for growth. But all of that packaging and all of that
growth makes for a pretty big pile of consumer waste. Every year, 120 billion units of cosmetics packaging is produced, and mostly for one-time use. Empty containers are often too small for recycling, and mixed-material items end up going straight to a landfill. Meanwhile, many of the beauty products purchased often sit unused, gathering dust and eventually ending up as trash-replaced with fresh items from the store. According to the LCA Centre, a Netherlands-based group that studies the environmen-
tal impact of packaging, some 70 percent of carbon emissions attributable to the industry could be eliminated if people simply used refillable containers. While small, progressive health and beauty brands have sought to capitalize on this dynamic by marketing themselves as green options, the bigger players have been moving more slowly. But that may be about to change-if consumers bite, that is. The Body Shop announced recently that it was buying hundreds of tons of recycled plastic from India; Beautycounter, a personal-care
and makeup-company backed by TPG Growth, said it’s planning to start a refillable beauty product in the next six months; and consumer giant Procter & Gamble is taking part in a trial program in which consumers use refillable containers for a range of home products. On Wednesday, P&Gowned skincare brand Olay went further. The company said it’s rolling out a refillable product as part of a limited pilot program, using its blockbuster moisturizer as a guinea pig. Olay said it has sold roughly 1.26 million units of Olay Regenerist Whip in

the U.S. alone, and Nielsen sales figures pegged it as the number one new skincare product last year. Anitra Marsh, associate director of sustainability for P&G Beauty, said the product was optimal for the trial in part because of the purchaser demographicwomen in their 20s and 30s who may be more worried about the environmental impact of what they buy. Other big brands, such as Aveda with its refillable compacts, have tiptoed into the environmental arena as well. The goal “is to have more products that are recyclable, reusable and refillable,” Marsh said. Chris Heiert, North America and global vice president at Olay, said that while the company wants to eliminate plastic waste, the program will necessarily turn on whether consumers are receptive. “If the consumer decides she likes this pod refill technology, we can expand at scale, and make a significant difference in reducing plastic waste,”
DIEDE’S USED CARS 2018 Malibu LT ............$16,995 2016 Taurus SEL AWD ....$15,995 2013 Camry LE ............. $9,995
he said. Smaller brands, however, are steps ahead or, in the case of by Humankind, entirely focused on refillable products. The online brand only sells eco friendly health and beauty items in recyclable packaging, including mouthwash tablets (you drop them in a glass of water — no bottle), refillable deodorant (refills come in paper pods) and shampoo bars (also no bottle). Brian Bushell, a co-founder, said the company is “combating the global crisis of single-use plastic in all of our product categories.” The paper-pod refill system for its deodorant eliminates about 90 percent of single-use plastic associated with common deodorant dispensers, he said. There’s also another aspect of the health and beauty industry’s carbon footprint that’s triggered some online pushback. Whether it’s a function of potent marketing or something else, unused beauty products tend to linger, accumulating dust at home as consumers buy new items. In fact, a whopping 80 percent of purchased products aren’t actively used, according to Olay’s research.

Watch out — hackers nab passwords by how you type By Hamza Shaban The Washington Post
W
hat if scammers could learn your password not from a massive cyberattack or taking control of your device, but from listening in as you type? That’s the startling premise of a recent study by researchers at Cambridge University and Sweden’s Linköping University who were able to glean passwords by deciphering the sound waves generated by fingers tapping on smartphone touch screens. Malicious actors can decode what a person is typing by using a spying app that can access the smartphone’s
microphone, according to the study, which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal. “We showed that the attack can successfully recover PIN codes, individual letters and whole words,” the researchers wrote. A passive, soundbased attack could be executed if a person installs an app infected with such malware. “Many apps ask for this permission and most of us blindly accept the list of demanded permissions anyway,” the researchers wrote. Attackers also could also provide their target with a smartphone ton which the malicious app was pre-installed. The researchers designed a machine-
learning algorithm that could decode vibrations for specific keystrokes. Among a test group of 45 people across several tests, the researchers could correctly replicate passwords on smartphones seven times out of 27, within 10 attempts. On tablets, the researchers achieved better results, nailing the password 19 times out of 27 within 10 attempts. “We found the device’s microphone(s) can recover this wave and ‘hear’ the finger’s touch, and the wave’s distortions are characteristic of the tap’s location on the screen,” the researchers wrote. “Hence, by recording audio through the built-in microphone(s),
a malicious app can infer text as the user enters it on their device.” The experiment ran on an Android application that allowed participants to enter letters and words on two LG Nexus 5 phones and a Nexus 9 tablet, according the paper. As the participants tapped in the passwords, the app recorded audio through the devices’ built-in microphones. To simulate a real-world environment, the researchers had participants enter passwords at three
locations at a university, with different levels of background noise: a common room where a coffee machine was used; a reading room with computers, and a library. The study has not yet been peer reviewed, according to the report, or been published, but it is available online through a website maintained by Cornell University for academic research. To guard against such attacks, the researchers suggested, smartphone
makers might consider installing a switch that would allow users to shut off the microphone. Another option, they said, is to simply make it more obvious when the microphone is on, by flashing a light or an icon on the screen. The research fits into a broader study of security vulnerabilities that exploit a device’s builtin sensors — like cameras and accelerometers — to extract personal information from users without their knowledge.

Foxconn: Apple’s US iPhones can be made outside of China By Debby Wu Bloomberg
A
pple Inc. has a backup plan if the U.S.-China trade war gets out of hand. The Cupertino, Calif.based company’s primary manufacturing partner has enough capacity to make all iPhones bound for the U.S. outside of China if necessary, according to a senior executive at Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. The Taiwanese contract manufacturer now makes most of the smartphones
in the Chinese mainland. China is a crucial cog in Apple’s business, the origin of most of its iPhones and iPads as well as its largest international market. But President Trump has threatened Beijing with new tariffs on about $300 billion worth of Chinese goods, an act that would escalate tensions dramatically while levying a punitive tax on Apple’s most profitable product. Hon Hai, known also as Foxconn, is the American giant’s most important manufactur-
ing partner. It will fully support Apple if it needs to adjust its production as the U.S.-Chinese trade spat gets grimmer and more unpredictable, board nominee and semiconductor division chief Young Liu told an investor briefing in Taipei on Tuesday. “Twenty-five percent of our production capacity is outside of China and we can help Apple respond to its needs in the U.S. market,” said Liu, adding that investments are now being made in India for Apple. “We
have enough capacity to meet Apple’s demand.” Apple shares were up less than 1% to $194.40 in New York Tuesday morning. Apple has not given Hon Hai instructions to move production out of China, but it is capable of moving lines elsewhere according to customers’ needs, Liu added. The company will respond swiftly and rely on localized manufacturing in response to the trade war, just as it foresaw the need to build a base in the U.S. state of Wisconsin
But that project has since come under criticism for low-paying jobs, sudden dismissals and everchanging goals. On Tuesday, executives reaffirmed that employment goal, saying construction remained on schedule and that it will hire as many as 2,000 Americans by the end of 2020. It will also start making networking and server products for the U.S. market by the end of next year, on top of LCDs starting next year, Liu said.
two years ago, he said. It’s unclear if India will ever become a major production base for Apple’s marquee device. Foxconn is now running quality tests for the iPhone Xr series there and plans to begin mass production at a facility in the suburbs of Chennai. Older models are already assembled at a Wistron plant in Bangalore. Foxconn has also agreed to build a 13,000worker facility in Wisconsin in exchange for more than $4.5 billion in government incentives.

Understanding the State Department’s updated travel advisories By Hannah Sampson The Washington Post
A
traveler looking for global guidance from the U.S. State Department could be forgiven for being a bit confused. Official advisories — 209 of them — from the department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs cover countries and areas in every nook of the planet, and one even warns of a blanket worldwide caution. All destinations are ranked from levels 1 to 4, and places as disparate as Italy, China, Antarctica and the Dominican Republic are among the 58 countries that share a designation of Level 2, which means “exercise increased caution” — but for a host of reasons. The warnings range from possible terrorist attacks, in Italy, to arbitrary enforcement of local laws, in China, to “extreme and unpredictable weather,” in Antarctica. The Dominican Republic advisory warns of “violent crime,” which predated a sudden influx of American deaths in the country. More than half of the advisories are at Level 1, the lowest, which tells travelers to exercise “normal precautions.” But even the countries with the lowest warning level aren’t in the clear. More than two dozen Level 1 destinations are home to regions marked with their
own, higher warnings, some that even get the most severe “do not travel” label. Heading to Panama or Peru? No problem, except for the parts with big problems. So how should travelers heed the warnings meant to help them stay safe abroad? In short, the fine print — even for the most idyllic-seeming getaway spot — is important. On first glance, for example, the Barbados advisory might suggest there’s nothing to worry about, because it sits at the lowest level. But expanding to read the entire advisory on the island nation reveals that the United States warns to avoid certain areas or activities, including two businesses that run “pirate ship” cruises at night. Matt Bradley, regional security director of the Americas for International SOS, a firm that provides health and security services to travelers, said the difficulty of rating an entire country is that different parts carry disproportionate levels of risk. “The nuance of this system allows them to say, ‘While the overall country is Level 1, there are specific destinations that are Level 2 or Level 3,’” he says. Michelle Bernier-Toth, the State Department’s managing director for the Office of Overseas Citizens Services, said the department makes its rulings based on infor-
mation from embassies and consulates, security experts, local governments and other sources. And even in a destination that is considered low-risk overall, if there are specific zones that are off-limits or restricted for employees of the U.S. government, that information must be passed along to the public. “We really want to be as accurate as we can so people can make an informed decision,” she says. Because situations can change quickly, the State Department urges travelers to sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive alerts about a destination and to provide ways for the U.S. Embassy to reach them in case of an emergency. Through the program, anyone can choose one or more countries and enter their dates of travel, and the department will email updates with alerts and advisories. Those messages also appear on Twitter at @TravelGov and on the Department of State’s Consular Affairs Facebook page. Each advisory at Level 2 or higher includes specific risks such as crime, terror, civil unrest, natural disaster, health concerns and, as of April, kidnapping. The State Department’s site often spells out specific geographic areas of concern and also offers tips for dealing with
those risks, links to more country information and warnings about what the U.S. government cannot do in an emergency. The bureau also includes details for people traveling internationally under various circumstances: those going on a cruise, leaving the country with pets, going to high-risk areas or embarking on a pilgrimage. There are also recommendations for people in specific groups — the LGBTQ community, travelers with disabilities — who could find themselves vulnerable on the road. Other countries issue their own advisories for international travel, but, Bradley said, it’s not necessary for a traveler to check several countries’ warnings. They should, however, be sure to pay attention to the advice of the country where they are a citizen. “Check the site of your citizenship because that is the one written specifically for you,” he says. “The risks won’t change, but the citizenship-specific advice could change, and that could be confusing.” The United States, for example, warns citizens not to travel to Iran — a country with which the U.S. government does not have diplomatic or consular relations — whereas Canada urges its citizens merely to use a high degree of caution. If all that sounds hard to

follow, consider that the system actually got an overhaul last year that made it easier to decipher. Under the old version, low-risk countries didn’t have any kind of advice. Only those destinations with concerns were singled out with travel warnings or alerts — and the difference wasn’t necessarily obvious. “Frankly, I personally was tired of explaining the difference between a travel warning and a travel alert even to some of my colleagues,” Bernier-Toth said in a briefing about the new changes last year. She told The Washington Post recently that the new system treats countries consistently, uses plain language, puts the risk indicators front and center, and makes information on how to deal with threats much more clear. The department still puts out short-term alerts about security, weather or other issues, even if they don’t change an overall advisory. “We made the change because we found that the old system of travel warnings and travel alerts was not readily understood by people,” she says, “and we wanted to make our travel advisories — now that we have [one] for every country — clearer, more concise, more actionable and more accessible to people.”
