Odessa sets new record at dog mile world championship By Jacob Bogage The Washington Post From the time Dan Wehunt wanted a dog, he wanted a German shorthaired pointer. A track and field teammate at the University of Florida had one, and whether it was the breed’s fashionable coat, eagerness
to please or irresistibly friendly eyes and smile, Wehunt knew he had to have one. After graduation, he found Odessa, the quietest in her litter, but the sweetest, too. He took her home and trained her with his twin brother. He didn’t know she’d
grow up to be a world champion. Odessa and Wehunt, 28, won the State Street Mile and Dog Mile World Championship in Santa Barbara, California, on Sunday. Their time, 4:06.2, is the fastest recorded canine and human mile ever run.
“Honestly there’s not many opportunities to run with your dog,” Wehunt said in a phone interview. Well, at least not competitively.
-
German shorthaired pointers are “gun dogs,” bred over centuries to accompany sportsmen on hunts for waterfowl, possum, rabbit, raccoon and deer, according to
the American Kennel Club. “GSPs have a very high energy level and a strong prey drive,”

How octopus could help us to keep, or lose, our cool By Lela Nargi The Washington Post Engineer Alon Gorodetsky remembers the precise moment he decided to drop everything and start studying cephalopods. This class of sea animals includes squid, cuttlefish and octopuses. “I saw this amazing video by (a biologist named) Roger Hanlon of an octopus suddenly appearing out of an algae-covered rock,” Gorodetsky says. The amazing now-you-don’tsee-it-now-you-do ability of the animal “made me think, I have to work on this.” Ever since, Gorodetsky’s lab at the University of California at Irvine (UCI) has been trying to make what he calls “technologically valuable things” based on cephalopods’ camouflaging skills. They’ve finally succeeded in creating a material that will let people, not disguise

themselves as rocks and algae, but regulate how warm or cool they feel. The UCI team built this material using biomimicry — watching how a biological organism behaves, then imitating it. Cephalopods have a layer of skin that’s packed with pigment-containing cells called chromatophores. When you can’t see the cephalopod, it’s expanding and contracting its chromatophores between little upright points and big, flat disks. Think about drawing dots on a piece of plastic wrap, says Gorodetsky, then stretching the plastic so that those dots get much bigger. In the case of the cephalopod, that action changes how light is reflected off its skin. This lets it change its appearance. The UCI team used it as inspiration to lay little pieces of copper tightly together on top of a rubber sheet. When the sheet is
relaxed, the copper absorbs and retains heat. When the sheet is stretched, the copper pieces are pulled apart so that spaces appear between them. Heat then escapes from those spaces. It’s a simple process that could let people change their own temperature rather than the temperature of a room they’re sitting in — Gorodetsky imagines how this could help buildings save money and energy on heating and cooling. He points out that no two people experience hot and cold the same. His team highlighted this in a demonstration. “We made sleeves from the material and had three people wear them,” he says. “One person’s arm started sweating uncontrollably,” so they simply stretched the sleeve to feel relief. “One person was fine. A third person felt cold” and could put on an extra sweater rather than turning up the thermostat.

according to the AKC’s breed profile, “:and they need an owner with an active lifestyle to guide the dog’s exuberance and intensity into positive outlets.” For Odessa, who is now 4 1/2 years old, that manifests into a love of sticks and tennis balls. “I can throw a ball with the Chuckit [a ball-throwing wand] back and forth without stopping, if it’s a cool day, for an almost unlimited time,” Wehunt said. “It just ends up being time to go. Like, it’s been 30 minutes, and you don’t look tired — or at least as much as I thought you would.” One solution to burn up all that energy: Just run. By the time Odessa was a couple years old, Wehunt had moved to Bozeman, Montana, to design and build shoes for hiking company Oboz. He was a few years removed from his competitive track and field career in college, and ready to take up the sport again. The temperate climate made training easier than back home in Florida, and Odessa (“Dess,” for short) could be a good running buddy, he thought.

He trained her to run beside him off leash, then purchased a harness that attaches to her collar and wraps around his waist. Now, they run 40 miles together a week. “She just had a knack for it,” Wehunt said. “She just ends up just jogging next to me. She could just go for hours and hours and hours. . . . Most friends, when they meet her, they’re very impressed. They say, ‘How does your dog just keep going?’” He found the State Street race two years ago and planned a vacation road trip this year around it, with a visit to his brother in Portland, Oregon, and camping in Zion National Park in Utah also on the agenda. And when the race began, Wehunt and Odessa broke to the front and left the pack behind. “She could have ran three [minutes] flat the other day,” Wehunt said. “I was holding her back, to be honest.” Their world record result was seven seconds better than the previous mark, set by a Weimaraner named Kaydom and his human Brian Duff in 2016. Race organizers rewarded Wehunt with a plaque and Odessa with lots of pets and ear scratches.

Tools to help you dine safely this summer with some style By Ellie Krieger The Washington Post Safety is an essential component of summer fun, which is why we wear bike helmets and reapply sunscreen. But keeping food safe when eating outdoors is a preventive measure that is often overlooked: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in six Americans is sickened by foodborne pathogens each year, with summer being peak season for the problem. It’s a double-whammy of risk: Bacteria thrive
in the warmer weather, and it’s challenging to follow good food-safety habits when you are out and about. Fortunately, there are some new products on the market to help you stay safe this summer, and do it stylishly, too. Packable mini-coolers Keeping perishable food chilled is a must any time of year, but it is especially critical in the summer because bacteria grow fastest just when you most want to head out to the beach or pool — at tempera-

especially cool — double entendre intended — because the bags have a freezable gel built into their walls. Pop a bag in the freezer the night before — it folds flat so it doesn’t take up too much space — and it’ll be ready to go the next morning. The company makes bags in many different shapes and sizes. Chilled serving bowls All too often, food put out for a backyard party is left in the heat for hours — think about
arriving on the later side to a summer shindig to face a sunbaked macaroni salad with a suspicious-looking crust. If you are hosting, you may hesitate to bring the food inside to be refrigerated when your company keeps coming back for more, but you don’t want them to get sick, either. One strategy is to stagger the dishes you put out. Another tactic is to use serving dishes with built-in chilling systems. These bowls
not only keep food safely edible longer, they keep it tasting and looking fresher, too. You can get the type that have a separate compartment for ice, such as the set made by Prodyne, or vessels that have a builtin freezer gel to freeze before using, such as the elegant metallic bowls from Frontgate. Either makes a lovely gift for a party host, as well, and might just spare you future macaroni salad mishaps.

any home improvement television series showcase people deciding whether to improve upon their current homes to make them into the houses of their dreams or to put “for sale” signs in their lawns and move on to something new. The question of whether to move or stay put depends on various factors. Such factors may include emotional attachment to a home, the current economic climate and the cost of real estate. Current data points to a greater propensity for people to invest and improve upon their current properties rather than trading up for something new. According to information collected by John Burns Real Estate Consulting, the percentage of homeowners moving up
to their next home is the lowest in 25 years. Many are opting to make starter homes permanent by expanding them and repairing homes for the long haul. The National Association of Realtors said that, between 1987 and 2008, home buyers stayed in their homes an average of six years before selling. Since 2010, however, NAR says the average expected length of time people will stay in their homes before selling is now 15 years. Part of what’s fueling this permanency is that many home buyers were able to acquire rock-bottom mortgage interest rates shortly after the 2008 recession. As a result, they’re not inclined to walk away from those rates, even if doing so means
getting more house. Also, a low inventory of available houses has stymied repeat buying for many people. Those factors and others have led many homeowners to invest in renovations instead. The experts at Bankrate say realistic budgeting and comparing renovation project costs against mortgages and interests rates can further help individuals decide whether to remain in their current homes or move out. Very often a smarter layout and more efficient floor plan can make meaningful differences in spaces. Renovations and redesigns can make sense and often are less expensive and disruptive than moving.

“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”
How to take a staycation this summer By Christopher Elliot The Washington Post Between running a start-up company and wrapping up his graduate degree, Pierre Huguet is too busy to take a vacation this summer. “I don’t have much time to travel around, so I’ve decided to stay home,” he says. Instead, he’s taking a staycation, a getaway popularized after the Great Recession that’s seeing a resurgence this year. MMGY Global, a travel and hospitality marketing and research company, predicts a slowdown in leisure travel this year, which could translate into more staycations. Huguet, who lives in Sherbrooke, Quebec, with his girlfriend, says he’ll spend mornings working and the afternoons exploring the area with her. “It’s a beautiful region surrounded
by rivers, mountains, lakes — and poutine,” he says. A staycation usually involves a long weekend or a week in which you participate in leisure activities that don’t require overnight accommodations. But this summer, America’s staycationers are pushing the limits of their grounded getaways. “They’re looking for authentic, hands-on or interactive learning experiences,” explains Simon Hudson, director of the Center of Economic Excellence in Tourism and Economic Development at the University of South Carolina. Exactly how they plan to achieve that authenticity is hard to articulate. Hudson says themes are big this summer, with staycationers exploring subjects such as farming or wine. Yes, it’s the travel
industry’s worst nightmare. But for everyone else, it’s a welcome break from the mindset of a destination vacation: spend, spend, spend. Turns out the key to a successful staycation is a little planning and a strong sense of purpose. If you’re thinking of a staycation, make sure it counts for something, experts say. For Hana Pevny, it means exploring the area around Kennebunk, Maine. “It’s not only for myself,” she explains. “I’m new to Southern Maine and wanted to get to know my surroundings. It’s also to be able to better advise my guests on local attractions and mini-trips.” Pevny is the innkeeper at the Waldo Emerson Inn in Kennebunkport, so her staycation will make her a more informed host, she says.
For Yasmin Parsloe, who lives in Sarasota, Florida, a staycation is all about the beach. And she happens to live near one of the best beaches in the world. Siesta Key, with its white sand and turquoise water, is just a stone’s throw from her place. “I know that if I’m nearby, I don’t have to put the in-depth planning and preparation into my trip,” Parsloe says. “There’s no concern about doggy day care or worrying about whether someone has a document they need at the office. It alleviates the pressure of being away for a week or two at a time.” Parsloe has ulterior motives. She also runs a start-up website called Beach.com, which specializes in beach travel. She figures that her staycation will make her even more of an expert
on Sarasota’s beaches. What do you do on staycation? A lot of people don’t plan, so the answer is, nothing much. That’s a mistake, according to experts. “You have to think outside the box,” says Aditi Shekar, the CEO of Zeta, a finance app for couples. “Know what you want to get out of it. Is this staycation one where you want to relax? Have an adventure? Or do something you’ve never done before? Whatever your preference, decide what you want to get out of the staycation.” Too often, staycationers just let the vacation happen. That makes it utterly forgettable, if not also a waste of valuable vacation time. Planning doesn’t have to involve a lot of heavy lifting, says Natalie Conrad, a spokeswoman for Minneapolis Northwest

Tourism. If you’re a staycationer in the Twin Cities, you can consult the resources offered by the state tourism organization and local convention and visitors bureaus. For example, Minneapolis Northwest has a website and a blog dedicated to planning fun day trips or long weekends, with suggested itineraries and posts such as 50 Free Things To Do in Minneapolis Northwest and Beyond. You don’t even need an Internet connection to plan your staycation. “Pick up the phone and call,” she says. “An old-fashioned conversation with a representative from a state tourism organization or city convention and visitors bureau can help uncover hidden gems you might not have known about in your own hometown.”
