Virginia Tech’s ‘FutureHAUS’ brings tomorrow’s home into today’s world By Nina Zafar The Washington Post

Virginia Tech placed first in Dubai’s Solar Decathlon Middle East competition that challenged 15 universities from around the world to design, build and operate energy positive solar homes. While the baseline for the competition revolved around energy efficiency within a 900-square-foot space, what differentiated FutureHAUS from its competitors was the smart technologies. “We didn’t enter the competition for the

In recent years, innovation in digital technologies transformed the way we live. Advances in smartphones, robotics and computers revolutionized every aspect of our lives leaving it almost impossible to imagine life without them, yet these types of technologies remain object focused vs. concept focused. At Virginia Tech, an interdisciplinary team of 25 students and faculty is taking existing technology that work independently of each other and asking the question, why can’t these components

We used the competition to test out an idea of how to build a future house,” says Joe Wheeler, an architecture professor and leading member of the FutureHAUS team. “The competition didn’t control what the end product was. Our vision of what a house should be is what controlled this end product.” The future house Wheeler refers to is composed of several cutting-edge concepts. The prefabrication concept proposes that homes be built like cars or planes, utilizing an efficient and sustainable factory. The system is

different from modular or double-wide concepts which ship an entire build in one piece. Instead, the FutureHAUS comprises 18 prebuilt “Lego style” modules that are plug and play once they arrive on-site from the factory. This allowed the team to put the house together in two days. Not only are the modules easily transportable, but they are loaded with state-of-the-art technologies that revolve around the idea of aging in place. The research team submitted their request for participation in the competition in 2016, giving them two years to come up with their plan.

“We did a lot of user group studies. The university is a perfect test fit for that, not only because you have the student body but also you have the researchers doing their own research,” says Bobby Vance, a professor and program manager at Virginia Tech’s Center for Design Research. Matthew Boys, a recent graduate of Virginia Tech who worked on the FutureHAUS project as part of his capstone, interned with Dominion Energy for three summers before connecting his management with the FutureHAUS team. The 23-year-old industrial and systems engineering major managed much of the logistics for getting the house to Dubai. “It was a heck of an experience,” Boys said. “Being in a different environment, seeing the fruits of our tireless labor come together was amazing. At one point, this was just on drawings so to see it actually happening and watching people go

into the house and seeing their reactions, their jaws were dropping.” Although members of the FutureHAUS team are still thriving off the excitement of sweeping the competition in Dubai, they are already looking toward the future of smart homes. They have developed a VR model that lets users interact with their potential home in real time. This allows them to preview the finishes in the home, from the floors to the walls. The Dubai FutureHAUS is a very stark white, modern style, but the home can be customized to a more homey design. “We’re taking this to scale. We’re going to find the investors and come up with a couple of model homes that aren’t necessarily so futuristic like this, something that would meet market demand and propose what I like to call the Sears home of the future. We’re going to revitalize it and bring it back in a modern iHome,” Wheeler said. The team has already begun researching what it would take to scale up production in a factory setting with a new team of engineering students. For a house named after the future, the technology is very much current. It may be just a matter of time before the FutureHAUS concept becomes a new normal.

Studying the death of the sidewalk

By Avi Selk The Washington Post On a summer afternoon in 1894, William Barkalow had a drink or three and got on his horse. He rode it down the central sidewalk of Long Branch, New Jersey, where horses were, even in those primordial days of traffic regulation, definitely not supposed to go. Barkalow rode amongst the foot traffic like an electric scooter before its time. The next day’s New York Times reported that he paid no heed to a police officer’s shouts, nor the billy club flung at him. And while Barkalow didn’t trample anyone, his breach of sidewalk etiquette proved so intolerable that the officer finally shot him between the shoulder blades. The turn of the century was a rough time in the history of the sidewalk. Ubiquitous strips of not-street were squeezed thin-

ner and thinner to make way for horses, trolleys and eventually lanes of automobiles. The footed masses fought with vendors and construction crews for the leftover pavement as if it were some Mesopotamian riverbed. “The pedestrians now, as formerly, must spend their time in a hurdle race over skids, climb platforms, dodge moving boxes or else run the risk of being crushed under horses” hoofs in the street,” the Times complained in 1896, as part of its newly launched “crusade against the sidewalk grabbers.” There’s a new kind of sidewalk grabber today — more agile than Barkalow’s horse, popping seemingly from nowhere into the paths of pedestrians at 10,15, 20 mph. Thousands of rentable electric scooters have taken over pavement from Washington, D.C., to Santa Monica and Austin to Chicago. They clog nar-

The physical injuries are one thing: A 75-year-old man tripped over an abandoned scooter in San Diego and shattered his knee. A 7-year-old boy near Los Angeles reportedly had his teeth knocked out by a scooter rider. A 44-yearold woman was hit by a Bird in a Cincinnati intersection. The assailant had their Bird account suspended, while the woman got a $1,000 medical bill. And on the other side of the gutter, car-on-scooter fatalities are becoming almost commonplace. But for every broken tooth there are countless jostled states of mind, as pedestrians discover the placid streams by which they travel have been

Jacob Hege, 22, has walked to work a bit more cautiously since last Tuesday morning, when he emerged from a crosswalk on 16th Street NW in Washington and felt something thwack him from behind. In Hoboken, New Jersey — the state’s first major beachhead for scooters — an anonymous Twitter documentarian records rider buzzing strollers and smashing into each other. In Atlanta, a man in a wheelchair who calls himself John Plantaseed has taken to knocking down rows of scooters like chains of dominoes, yelling triumphant obscenities as they clatter to the pavement. Cities are trying to mitigate the backlash. Washington will begin experimenting with solar powered charging docks, hoping to break riders’ habit of dumping the scooters wherever they happen to get off. But sometimes no balance can be found. Nashville’s mayor is now seeking to evict all scooters from the streets. We could use some

perspective, because this is not the first sidewalk war by any means. The first known sidewalks were laid in central Anatolia around 2000 B.C. — a millennium or two after the invention of the wheel, according to the book “Sidewalks: Conflict and Negotiation over Public Space.” They remained rare luxuries in most of the world until the 19th century, when the big cities like London and Paris built hundreds of miles of the stuff. But it took decades of social conditioning before “walk” became the operative syllable in sidewalk. For most of human history, vehicles, pedestrians, vendors, musicians, drinkers and strolling lovers all mingled in the same amorphous muck of the avenue. It’s only in the last century or so that those corridors have been divided up, stratified, painted with lines regulated in the name of more efficient movement.

But is this the way we’ll all be driving — or letting the car drive us — in the future? I’m spending two days with a Model 3, the dualmotor, all-wheel-drive version of Tesla’s massmarket sport sedan. It’s an electric-blue-colored window into one company’s vision of the future of driving, if not THE future of driving. It’s at least a preview of what’s to come when cars go from gas-guzzling rustbuckets powered by explosions to softwaredriven supercomputers fueled by data. It has a “Fart Mode” to boot. And more customers

took place with Tesla’s much-lauded autopilot software suite engaged. It’s jarring at first to have the car hurtle through space-time without so much as an accelerator input, but really, this is what cruise control must have felt like to a person in the 1960s. Autopilot features keep the car within the lane lines and steer it from onramp to off-ramp, maintaining speed and safe distance from the cars ahead. The car can make lane changes automatically with input from the turn signal stalk. The really eye-opening stuff happens once you activate a feature called “Navigate on Autopilot.” Navigate on Autopilot uses destination inputs (think Google Maps) to guide the car from point A to point B. The car decides what lane to use for the fastest trip. Again, the driver confirms any lane changes the car might want through the turn signal stalk. But there’s a further layer of automation. Poke around in the menus enough and you’ll find the option to disable lane change confirmation. This is where it gets interesting. In an ideal scenario, the car will navigate from on-ramp to off-ramp without inputs from the driver — who, of course, is supposed to keep their hands on the wheel and remain engaged at all times. “This does not make

your vehicle autonomous,” the menus say. And it shows. In Navigate on Autopilot, the car didn’t seem to know when it was about to be cut off by another driver, or anticipate lane changes from cars ahead that were using their turn signal indicators. I sensed it guessing and checking, moving away from a lane and then back into the center when it sensed another car. At one point in a curve, the car veered unprompted between lanes at a slant, leading me to take over in one spot a few miles from the Bay Bridge. Perhaps there is an explanation such as user error or my own unfamiliarity with the system. But I didn’t have enough confidence in what it was doing to keep it active for the entirety of a 30-mile highway trip. And here lies probably the most important lesson about Tesla’s model of automation — on day one or six months in, as I learned from a friendly Tesla owner at a San Francisco supercharging station: Trust but verify. You’re in control. It’s not self-driving — rather, done right, it’s a

type of plugged-in hyperaware driving that eliminates certain hassles that accompany daily driving. Navigate on Autopilot was seamless at one point in traffic, shifting lanes one at a time and putting me into position to exit an off-ramp. It could be tremendously useful for

long-haul trips and eliminating the physical fatigue of driving, including the engine noises and pedal pushing and yanking of the steering wheel. But responsible use of the features should still leave you mentally exhausted after that kind of trip.

may soon be able to try the car themselves. Tesla announced record deliveries on Tuesday, overcoming shipping and logistics problems that plagued it in the first quarter. From April through June, the Associated Press reported, Tesla delivered 95,200 vehicles, more than the 90,700 it delivered in the final quarter of last year. The deliveries record is welcome news after Tesla faced a stock slump through much of June and weathered fears that demand for its vehicles had fallen amid a dwindling federal tax credit. Oh and in case you’re wondering, the Model 3 is a joy to drive. With all its power available instantly thanks to the marvel of its electric motors, a touch of the accelerator pedal makes you feel like you’re basically on a glidepath to space. Let go of it and regenerative braking pulls you back to earth, seizing all that power back into the batteries to slow down the car — and extending its range in the process. The entire experience is built around that simple interaction and Tesla seems to have it down. But, I drained about two-thirds of my Model 3’s battery without ever leaving the Bay Area, through a combination of sustained highway cruising and spending way too much time in stop-and-go traffic.
