The risk with so many ordinary objects becoming “smart” is that it makes them dependent on software updates and malfunctions — or a product losing its connectivity if a company goes out of business or discontinues the line. Nike’s $350 self-lacing shoes for instance stopped lacing earlier this year because of a software update.

In 2016, Google’s parent company Alphabet filed a patent for “a diaper sensor for detecting and differentiating feces and urine.” Last year, Huggies partnered with Korean company Monit to launch a smart diaper sensor in Korea and Japan.

them in an increasingly connected world. “Even an infant or a toddler deserves a little privacy,” said Julie Lythcott-Haims, author of bestselling book “How to Raise an Adult.” From smart diapers to social media, today’s parents are grappling with an ever-expanding crop of privacy concerns triggered by widespread connectivity of devices. Posting photos, tracking their development in an app or even searching for information on their health conditions can help big tech develop digital profiles that could follow those children for the rest of their lives. In many cases, it’s still unclear how data for children’s connected devices are used and how secure it is. Take baby monitors and security cameras: There are dozens of examples of baby or child monitors being hacked or otherwise compromised, including an incident reported by The Washington Post earlier this year in which a Nest Cam installed in a child’s room began playing pornography. Lythcott-Haims said that parents should proceed carefully when evaluating data-collecting mechanisms for use on their children, even in the earliest stages of life. Tracking a baby too closely could also quickly morph into helicopter parenting. “When does tracking every move become inappropriate surveil-

By Marie C. Baca The Washington Post Pampers is the latest company to jump into trendy, wearable devices with a new “connected care system” called Lumi that tracks babies’ activity through a sensor that attaches to diapers. The sensor sends an alert to an app notification when a diaper is wet. It also sends information on the baby’s sleep and wake times and allows parents to manually track additional info, like dirty diapers and feeding times. A video monitor is included with the system and is integrated into the app. Pampers didn’t say how much the system, which is launching in the U.S. this fall, will cost. The announcement Thursday from Pampers, which is part of Procter & Gamble, is a sign of the growth in the “baby tech” industry. The Internet of things, or IoT, has invaded homes, promising to make routines and tasks more efficient. Companies have launched connected bassinets, smart night lights and pacifiers, bottles that track feedings and even apps to replicate the sound of a parent saying, “Shush.” Research and Market report predicts the interactive baby monitor market alone will reach more than $2.5 billion by 2024. But with the increase in “smart” options for babies and younger children, too, parents must make decisions about how much tech to use as they seek to raise

They built a better ketchup bottle. And it’s going to be everywhere. By Laura Reiley The Washington Post Remember when ketchup turned upside down? Or when half gallons of milk grew plastic screw caps on their sides? We are resistant to change in food packaging, attached to our squeezy honey bear, Toblerone’s triangular prism, the resealable paperboard tube that houses Pringles’s neat stack of hyperbolic paraboloid chips. But what if there’s a better way? (Seriously, try going back to doing the pinchy-pully motion to open the cardboard wings of a milk carton without mauling things.) Something new is coming and soon you will scarcely remember when it didn’t exist. It’s called the Standcap Inverted Pouch. Daisy brand sour cream led the charge, debuting their

Daisy Squeeze in 2015: a soft-sided, inverted wedge shape with a flat, flip-top dispensing closure on which it sits jauntily. It rolls down like a toothpaste tube, uses gravity as an assist and minimizes the introduction of oxygen, thus slowing spoilage. And now the pouches are coming fast and furious: Chobani wholemilk plain yogurt, Original Uncle Dougie’s organic barbecue sauces. A major player in the guacamole business will debut its version Aug. 1. What’s behind the pivot? Some is financially driven: In the first year of its pouch, Daisy reported a 69.7 percent increase in sales (despite charging about 25 percent more per ounce than for the traditional tubs). But according to Ron Cotterman, vice president of corporate inno-

vation and sustainability for the packaging-solutions company Sealed Air, some of the drive for innovative packaging is a turn away from glass. He says in the past decade there’s been a shift for three reasons: One is the cost of transporting and storing a heavy product, the second is the perception of safety (consumers fear breakage and shards) and the third is that there are not a lot of end markets for the glass. There has been a significant shift away from municipalities recycling glass because of the enormous cost associated with it. “Part of it is consumer-driven,” Cotterman says. “But it’s also about sustainability. Walmart has its Project Gigaton goal to avoid 1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases from the global value chain by 2030. And Amazon

aims to make half of its shipments carbon neutral by 2030.” The race is on to replace heavy, bulky cans and jars with flexible packaging that can be stored flat for shipment before being filled. That flexible standup pouch requires significantly less water, and produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions and other waste, says Evan Arnold, the director of product development and engineering at flexible packaging firm Glenroy, one of three companies that collaborated on the pouch. “I just spoke at the Association of Dressings and Sauces technical meeting in Louisville and I asked everyone if they wanted to save the world. And I meant it, kind of,” Arnold says. Fine, world-saving. But let’s talk about flips, drips, lips and other

quotidian woes. There’s the jerking motion required to coax a viscous liquid down the neck of an upright glass or hard plastic bottle (and the anguish of an unexpected deluge), then the wrist-flick flip back upright so gravity halts the flow. There’s the goo that accumulates around the lip and cap of a regular bottle. And there’s the vexing last 10 percent of a product that clings stubbornly to the container’s innards, taunting you and wasting your money. Aptar is the company responsible for the Standcap’s silicone dispensing-valve technology. Regular inverted bottles with dispensing valves have a re-intake of air after you squeeze (like a shampoo bottle). Aptar’s invention dispenses and cuts off the product without introducing air. According to Rob Johnson, chief executive of Original Uncle Dougie’s, this feature dramatically extends shelf life. But there are other reasons companies might be shifting to this kind of package. It’s about a cultural shift, taking a product like sour cream from an ingredient (the anchor to a casserole or coffee cake) to a condiment. “All of the research going on would validate this,” Johnson says. “More and more people are using dipping sauces as a way for people to

add flavor to food. A lot of restaurants are doing that.” The New York Times took some heat several years back for suggesting that millennials were killing breakfast cereal because there was too much cleanup. There is validity to this: Younger generations don’t want to dirty silverware if they don’t have to. Thus, the condimentization of foods. Look for the Standcap soon for nut butters, salsas and jams, that Aptar valve adjustable for different thickness and chunkiness levels. For now, the Standcap Inverted Pouch is a novelty that stands out, and up, in the condiment aisle. (The more elongated the package, by the way, the more consumers perceive they contain, so the Standcap may trounce squattier tubs for eye appeal.) But companies may also be playing to consumer psychology. Products that reside in the door of the refrigerator see more action. A tub gets pushed to the back of the fridge and into Siberia, green fuzz and solitude it’s inevitable fate. This new technology’s upright design makes it door-appropriate, living cheek to jowl with heavy-rotation items. The Standcap Inverted Pouch may, in a sense, give companies a foot in the door.

Toys R Us is back from the dead, but its new stores are unrecognizable By Abha Bhattarai The Washington Post

interactive displays and spaces for special events and birthday parties. “We’re reinventing Toys R Us to make it fun and interactive for kids and parents,” said Richard Barry, a former Toys R Us executive who is leading the new venture. “This is a global brand that is absolutely beloved in the United States.” The revamped Toys R Us is a joint venture between Tru Kids Brands — which acquired the Toys R Us brand in January — and b8ta, a chain of “experiential” consumer electronics stores. The new effort is being led by Barry and Phillip Raub, the founder of b8ta. For decades, Toys R Us

A year after shutting all its U.S. stores, Toys R Us is making a comeback. The international chain, which filed for bankruptcy in 2017, is opening two mall stores this holiday season and bringing back its website. But don’t expect the Toys R Us you’re used to. For one, the new locations — at the Galleria in Houston and Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus, N.J. — will be much smaller than their predecessors. And instead of aisles overflowing with packaged toys, the focus will be on open play areas,

was the nation’s preeminent toy seller. It had a flagship store in Times Square, a catchy jingle and an iconic mascot, Geoffrey the Giraffe. The company was founded in 1948 as a baby furniture shop in Northwest Washington, but quickly became a destination for toys of all kinds. In recent years, though, it had fallen into disarray and had billions in debt, much of it from a 2005 leveraged buyout. By the time it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2017, Toys R Us had become a cautionary tale of private equity deals gone wrong. Its bankruptcy filing listed $7.9 billion in debt against $6.6 bil-

lion in assets. But there were other issues too: The company’s stores felt stale and crowded. They didn’t offer the convenience or low prices of online retailers, or the fun-filled experiences of specialty shops. “Toys R Us, which had basically devolved into a warehouse, did not have the vision or the money to give its customers a great experience,” Howard Davidowitz, a retail consultant who worked with Toys R Us in the 1980s and 1990s, told The Washington Post in 2017. “For a toy store to survive, they’ve got to create the kind of fun that Amazon can’t.” (Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s

chief executive, owns The Washington Post.) This time around, executives say they’re hoping to get it right. They aren’t using any debt to fund the new stores and are starting small, with 6,500-square-foot locations. (Old Toys R Us stores, by comparison, were typically about 40,000 square feet.) It is clear, they said, that Americans want a place to buy toys. After all, Toys R Us had annual sales of $11.5 billion when it filed for bankruptcy. (The company was unable to turn a profit, though, because it was paying $400 million a year toward its debt.) “The bankruptcy

was incredibly unfortunate but it wasn’t because Toys R Us was not generating cash or making money,” said Barry, who began his career stocking shelves at Toys R Us, and was most recently its chief merchandising officer. “There were significant other factors that led to the Chapter 11.” Executives did not say how many people they planned to hire for the two stores, but they said they would give first dibs to former Toys R Us employees. Thousands lost their jobs last year as a result of the store closures, and workers advocates say many of them have struggled to find work since.

Tofurky takes Arkansas to court over the word ‘meat’ By Maura Judkis The Washington Post Under Arkansas law, beginning Wednesday, meatless meat products such as vegetarian hot dogs and plant-based deli lunch meat can no longer be called either of those things. In an effort to prevent consumer confusion, the state passed a law in March that imposes fines on companies making meatless meat if they use words that describe meat — such as “turkey” or “steak” or “bacon” — when describing products that aren’t derived from animals. The same goes for makers of nutbased milks, which risk a fine for using the word “milk,” and even cauliflower rice, which must be called “riced cauliflower,” instead. But is the law really

about consumer confusion, or is it about protecting the state’s meat, dairy and rice farmers? That’s what a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court by the American Civil Liberties Union, Good Food Institute, Animal Legal Defense Fund and ACLU of Arkansas alleges. According to the complaint, filed Monday, “The Act is a restriction on commercial speech that prevents companies from sharing truthful and non-misleading information about their products. It does nothing to protect the public from potentially misleading information. Instead, it creates consumer confusion where none existed before in order to impede competition.” The suit, filed on behalf of Turtle Island Foods,

The government should focus on genuine consumer protection problems instead of playing word games to benefit special interests at the First Amendment’s expense. – BRIAN HAUSS, ACLU attorney which does business as the Tofurky Co., says the act violates the free speech clause of the First Amendment by censoring companies that are truthfully describing their products. The suit also says the act violates the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, and the dormant Commerce Clause, which affects interstate commerce. The lawsuit is not the

first of its kind. Several states, including Louisiana, Missouri and Mississippi, have adopted laws governing the use of language regarding plant-based products, and vegetarian meat companies have filed suit in the latter two states. Labeling laws aren’t just an American thing, either: In April, a committee in the European Parliament passed an amendment prohibit-

ing plant-based products from being labeled as steak, sausage, escalope, burger or hamburger. The proposal will be put to a vote by the European Parliament in the fall. If states are worried about meat and dairy farmers losing ground to plant-based food companies, they have a good reason for concern: Nondairy milk sales increased 61 percent between 2012 and 2017. The investment firm UBS has projected that the market for plant-based meat will increase from $4.6 billion in 2018 to $85 billion in 2030. People aren’t choosing veggie burgers because they’re being tricked into thinking they’re meat, say plant-based protein companies. They’re choosing them precisely because they are not meat, and mandating less-precise labeling (“veggie discs,” anyone?) will just make it harder for consumers to understand the flavor profile of the plant-

based meat alternative they’re buying. “Tofurky Co. cannot accurately and effectively describe its products without comparison to the conventional meat products whose flavor profiles they are designed to invoke,” the suit says, noting that all of the company’s products clearly state they are meatless, and comply with the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act’s labeling requirements. Nikhil Soman, the director of the Arkansas Bureau of Standards, was named as a defendant in the suit. He declined to comment to The Washington Post. “It’s absurdly patronizing that the government of Arkansas is asserting that the people of Arkansas can’t tell a ‘veggie burger’ from a ‘hamburger,’ or a ‘tofu dog’ from a ‘hot dog,’” ACLU attorney Brian Hauss said in a statement. “The government should focus on genuine consumer protection problems instead of playing word games to benefit special interests at the First Amendment’s expense.”

In London on Tuesday, Lotus unveiled its first all-electric supercar, the Evija. The 1,972-horsepower coupe will be the first developed under Lotus’s parent company, billionaire Li Shu Fu’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., which also controls Volvo Car Group, and will be the halo for the rest of the Lotus range that includes the Elise, Exige, and Evora. Geely teased the Lotus Evija back in April at the Shanghai Auto Show as a “statement of intent” for the company over the next decade. “Electric is part of the strategy going forward,” Phil Popham, chief executive officer of Lotus, said at the time. “For Lotus, it has to be all about the driving experience-and electric will drive the value of every car we make.” It will be the first allnew car from the English automaker in 11 years. The name, pronounced e-VI-ya, is derived from variations of Eve (as in “Adam and …”). Evija has a one-piece carbon fiber monocoque chassis, a very low ride height of just 105mm (4 inches) off the ground, and an electric powertrain developed by Williams Advanced Engineering, the same company known for motorsport success in Formula One and Formula E. The mid mounted battery pack is located behind the two racing seats of the car, which weighs just 3,703 pounds-lighter than a Ferrari California. From the outside, Evija looks chiseled to the bone with huge cut-out sides and massive front splitter. Its two dihedral doors are operated by the key fob instead of handles. (Did the now freelance Jony Ive have something to do with this?) The rear has a large wing and oblong laser taillights; the car uses lasers for both main and dipped headlight beams as well. Little lenses that look like wings on the thin vertical headlamps form the daytime running lights and turn signals. They’re set off with 20and 21-inch magnesium wheels in the front and rear, respectively. Lotus design director Russell Carr said the Evija’s looks are totally functional, right down to down-force-increas-

ing air tunnels through the body of the vehicle made possible by the lack of a conventional engine. The company might compromise on that ethos, though, when it comes devising a noise to replace the rumble of an internal combustion engine. “We’re working on the sound at the moment” Carr said in an interview. “I’d personally like it to be authentic, because to me the way the car looks is the noise. But there are various views.” Lotus plans to settle on single tone that could rise and fall as the car accelerates and which would be carried forward to future electric models, though owners might also be able to download their own favored engine sounds. Under the hood, the four-wheel-drive car has five drive modes: Range, City, Tour, Sport, and Track. It will be able to hit 62 miles per hour in less than 3 seconds. Top speed will exceed 200 mph. The total driving range will be 250 miles on one charge of the mid mounted 2,000kW battery — a power pack eight times stronger than that of a Formula E race car. Using a 350kW charging unit, it takes 12 minutes to charge the car to 80% of full and 18 minutes to get a full charge. Inside the cabin, Evija will be the first Lotus ever to contain full modern digital infotainment, which will receive periodic software updates much like Teslas. (Recall that Lotus, for its part, helped build the first Tesla Roadsters.) Drivers can use a new Lotus smartphone app to monitor the car from anywhere in the world, check the battery charge status, potential current driving range, and other things such as remotely turning on the heat or the air conditioning prior to them getting inside. At the track, a chronograph system in the app allows the driver to record lap times and then review the performance compared to past sessions. Production of the Evija will be limited to 130 units and will begin next year in Norwich, England. Pricing starts at $2.1 million (1.7 million pounds) with a $310,500 (250,000pound) deposit required to secure a production allocation.

exploding middle class that cares more about price than comfort. Asia’s demand has led to industry shortages of almost everything, from pilots and mechanics to airports and runways (to say nothing of leg room). Carriers go to great lengths to avoid buying more aircraft and having to pay for extra landing rights at airports that are close to bursting. Buying bigger planes is one way to deal with the problem, as AirAsia Group is doing. The Malaysian budget carrier in June said it was changing an order for hundreds of aircraft to a larger model that carries 50 more passengers and flies about 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) further. Another tactic is simply bolting in more chairs. European lowcost carrier Ryanair Holdings led the charge in 2014 when it ordered high-density jets from Boeing with eight more seats than normal. Cathay Pacific Airways,

once a hallmark of comfort, in 2017 started cramming an extra seat into each economy row on its Boeing 777-300s, at the cost of about an inch of personal space for each passenger. Less legroom is now the industry norm. In the early-2000s, rows in economy used to be 34 inches (86 centimeters) to 35 inches apart; now 30 to 31 inches is typical, though 28 inches can be found on short flights, according to Washington D.C.based advocacy group Flyers Rights. Seats have narrowed, too, from about 18.5 inches to 17 inches on average. Where someone’s personal space starts and ends can be contentious, especially when there’s not much space to begin with. It’s no surprise that air rage most commonly occurs in economy class. Flights have been forced to make unscheduled landings because passengers were bickering over reclining seats. Janet Bednarek, an

two hand spans and short of the 18-inch minimum that the manufacturer, Airbus, says is comfortable. Cebu doubled down in June with a $6.8 billion order for Airbus jets that includes 16 higher-capacity A330neos. Airbus says the plane is designed to fit 260 to 300 passengers in a typical layout that has first-class, business and economy cabins. For “higher-density configurations” — code for bare-bones economy — the planes fit as many as 440, the manufacturer says. Cebu is planning for 460, once the layout is certified. In an email, Cebu Chief Executive Adviser Mike Szucs said “customer comfort and experience will be a primary consideration” but airfares are “always an aspect consumers are conscious about.” Aviation website Simple Flying sums up the situation: “This will make for one interesting long-haul.”

aviation historian at the University of Dayton, in Dayton, Ohio, says smaller seats are less controversial in Asia, partly because Asians tend to have slighter builds than Americans or Europeans. “Where people are smaller on average it is not as big an issue” she said.”Many people are willing to put up with discomfort in exchange for low-price tickets.” And prices have come down. Some international flights cost less than half of what they did a decade ago, according to Australia’s Qantas Airways. Competition from lowcost carriers has forced airlines everywhere to lower fares and charge for things that were once free. Among the new extras one can buy: space. A one-way ticket to Shanghai from Manila, a four-hour flight, can cost less than $100 on Cebu Air. But there’s another price to pay: Seats on the planes are just 16.5 inches wide, less than the width of

Air travel is becoming a test of physical endurance. Seats have shrunk, legroom has vanished — and the airlines aren’t done with you yet. Cebu Air Inc., the Philippines’ biggest budget carrier, last month said it was moving kitchens and bathrooms on some of its new A330neos to cram in a record 460 seats, 20 more than the plane’s current maximum. It’s part of a broader push, particularly in Asia, to stuff more people into jets flying the most pop-

ular routes, according to aviation researcher Landrum & Brown. “It”s all a matter of squeezing as many passengers as they can,” said Mathieu De Marchi, a Bangkokbased consultant at the firm. “It’s only going to get worse over the next decade.” Even if paying customers are less happy, packing more of them into cabins has helped turn around the U.S. aviation industry in recent years. In Asia, where 100 million people fly for the first time every year, the strategy is now the bread and butter for lowcost carriers serving an

Tips when shopping at the dollar store By Laura Daily The Washington Post When a friend recently polled my Pilates classmates about how she could afford two graduation parties for her daughter, the answer was a unanimous “the dollar store.” Selling everything from ketchup to charcoal grills, the ubiquitous dollar store attracts shoppers of all ages and income levels. “Chains such as Dollar Tree and Family Dollar (both owned by Dollar Tree), Dollar General, 99 Cents Only Stores and Five Below have become large corporations with enormous buying power,” says Diane McCrohan, associate professor in the College of Business

at Johnson & Wales University. Once seen as dumping grounds for liquidated and off-brand merchandise, today’s dollar stores often buy their inventory from major manufacturers such as Procter & Gamble, Hanes, Unilever, Coca-Cola, Energizer, Crayola and General Mills. “I’m amazed by the dollar store near me in East Greenwich, Rhode Island,” adds McCrohan. “Not only is it up-to-date and relevant to the consumer, but the visual merchandising and displays are as good as any larger retailer. Customers can feel safe shopping them.”

W H E R E W H E R E

says Meaghan Brophy, a senior retail analyst who follows dollar-store trends for FitSmallBusiness.com. “But as many items are custom-made in smaller sizes by manufacturers for dollar stores, shoppers need to compare the price against weight, length and size.” That box of aluminum foil might look identical to those on grocery store shelves but may be only 18 square feet instead of 55. And a $1 can of green beans could sell for 88 cents at the supermarket down the street. Pricing is another variable. Everything still costs $1 at Dollar

But should you? Critics point out that dollar stores aren’t always good for communities, especially in urban centers with few retail options. According to the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, dollar stores take a toll on grocery stores and in many cases reduce people’s access to fresh food. That’s because few carry fresh produce and most offer a limited selection of processed food. In fact, some cities such as Tulsa, Oklahoma, have imposed restrictions on new stores. And you won’t necessarily get the lowest price there. “In general, dollar stores provide great value,”

Tree and 99 cents at 99 Cents Only, but prices vary at others. A recent Dollar General ad touted an 80-cent bottle of Gatorade and a $14 charcoal grill. Plus you’ll find many independently owned dollar stores that stock their shelves with closeout merchandise purchased from liquidators or who knows where. Janet Alvarez, executive editor of Wise Bread, a personal finance website, points out that you may get a better deal at your local grocery store with sales, loyalty programs and coupons. “Dollar stores are extremely convenient one-stop shopping, but if you have the time, it pays

and party supplies are among the best dollarstore deals. The quality may not be as high, but the difference is barely noticeable — and probably won’t matter — for disposable items that get tossed after one use, Brophy says. Recently, I noticed my neighborhood Dollar Tree is selling Hallmark greeting cards two for $1. And I refuse to pay $3.99 for a gift bag when I can pick up three for $1.

dollar store for a pair of sunglasses, as his are still sitting on his car’s dashboard at the airport parking lot. Just be sure any sunglasses you buy indicate they provide UV protection. You may not want to use them long-term, but in a pinch, they’re fine. And, for those of us who always misplace our reading glasses, it doesn’t hurt so much to lose a pair or two when they came from a dollar store.

Home goods

Look for picture frames, craft supplies and glassware. “I actually have a flower vase I bought 10 years ago at a dollar store and still use,” Brophy says.

Pregnancy tests

Surprise! According to McCrohan, home pregnancy tests are one of the top sellers at dollar stores. The FDA regulates home pregnancy tests, so if you buy one from a namebrand dollar store, you can feel confident it’s legit. More expensive ones may be easier to use or show results faster, but dollar store kits will do the same job.

Toys

This is one time when cheap may truly mean “cheap” Many dollar store toys carry no brand name. They break easily, may have small parts that can pose a choking hazard and don’t last. Some dollar stores may not receive notifications of recalls. Coloring books and cardboard puzzles are OK, but you really don’t want your kids to have meltdowns when their yo-yos become a tangled mess after three spins.

Anything with a plug

Off-brand electronics can be risky purchases, as their supply chains are not as consistent as the name brands you find at other retailers. Power strips and chargers are likely to be cheaply made and could damage your devices.

Batteries and battery-operated items

Unless the package carries a brand name, batteries are a risky buy. They may have been around a long time and/or are prone to leakage.

Sunscreen

Don’t get burned twice. If expiration dates are short-lived, leave it on the shelf. Ingredients in sunscreen really do have an expiration date, and although expired sunscreen isn’t going to hurt you, it may not be as effective.

Pet food

Water bowls and pet toys are fine, but all of the experts agreed that pet food is on their “avoid” list. Pet food may be closer to its expiration date, off-label or made offshore.

Health and beauty products

The general rule is if you are going to ingest it or put it on your skin, be extra cautious. Offbrand products may contain harsher ingredients or be watered down (such as shampoo and conditioner) to keep costs low. Check expiration dates, as well as price per ounce, to ensure you are getting a deal.

Explorer to take on Amelia Earhart mystery By Alex Horton The Washington Post Explorer Robert Ballard has found enough sunken ships to start a modest ghost fleet. The Titanic. The carrier USS Yorktown lost at Midway. President John F. Kennedy’s patrol boat sunk in the warm Solomon Seas. Ancient vessels in the Black Sea knotted with mariner skeletons. Now, after decades of finding the nearly unfindable, Ballard will set a course Aug. 7 for Nikumaroro, the uninhabited Pacific island south of nowhere, and attempt to solve the mystery of aviator Amelia Earhart’s disappearance. Earhart vanished in 1937 alongside navigator Fred Noonan as she sought to become the first female pilot to circumnavigate the globe. Since then, explorers and researchers have obsessed over Earhart’s disappearance, perhaps the greatest unsolved

mystery of the 20th century. That confounding mystery has piqued Ballard’s interest — and warded him off for the same reason. “Amelia Earhart has been on my sonar screen for a long, long time. And I’ve passed on it,” he told The Washington Post on Wednesday, a day before setting off for the Pacific. “I’m in the business of finding things. I don’t want to not find things.” But research opportunities in the region, he said, pulled him to the 1.3 mile-long Nikumaroro, roughly halfway between Hawaii and Australia in one of the most remote places on the planet. Ballard said his dual teams, on land and crawling along the nearby sea floor, will operate based on the most prevalent theory: that Earhart landed her plane on jagged coral ringing the northwest

side of Nikumaroro and sent a barrage of increasingly desperate radio messages for help before the tide dragged her plane away. She later died on the sparse island, the theory goes, leaving some to endlessly speculate if recovered bones were hers. In this theory, Earhart’s Lockheed Model 10 Electra was taken by the sea and sent to a cold and dark abyss. The U.S. Navy’s official conclusion is that Earhart and Noonan died shortly after crashing into the Pacific Ocean. Ballard rejects the notion she crashed further out in the sea, citing a photo taken months later possibly showing landing gear poking from a reef and numerous recorded distress calls that recounted the threat of rising water. If those things are true, he said, and Earhart had to make an emergency landing,

Regular sonar will not do in that terrain. Nikumaroro is a product of volcanic ridgelines vaulting from the Earth’s crust, transforming the region into a thicket of gullies and valleys. Unlike the search for Titanic, there is not a huge swath of ocean to comb.

Can souvenir matchbooks still rekindle travel memories? By Zofia Smardz It’s time to say goodbye to the matchbooks. Yes, it’s a sad thing to give up the mementos. But when you’re saving keepsakes that you picked up in places that closed down decades ago, what’s the point, right? Take the other night. I pulled a book out of the big glass bowl we’ve stored our sou-

venir matches in for the past, oh, 25 years at least. I needed to light some dinner candles, but we were out of regular matches, and it struck me (ha!) that I could put this old collection to good use at last. Don’t ask me why it took me so long to figure that out. Could it be because I keep that bowl high atop a ward-

robe in the third-floor bedroom? (What, you think this is maybe not the best way to display keepsakes?) Anyway, what I pulled out were matches from the Childe Harold, a once-famous Washington saloon that shut down a decade or more ago, though I was there a lot longer ago than that. I’m pretty sure it was to see the

Ramones. In the late 1970s. Wow, these are some old matches, I thought. Not only is the Childe Harold gone, but all four original Ramones are dead. Yeek. After this memento mori (not the kind of memento I kept those matches for), I used the book for a couple of weeks to light candles indoors and out. Can-

dles are my thing. I’m not a smoker, never was. Matches were just, many moons ago, a free souvenir that you could pick up in any restaurant or bar almost anywhere in the world. There they were, in a basket or a bowl by the door, for the taking. So I took. They’d be a good reminder, I thought, of the corner bar we hung out at during my junior year abroad in Vienna, or the great pizzeria not far from my flat in downtown Bonn, or the Oslo hotel where I was lucky to find a room the one time I visited. Or the Parisian brasserie or the Venetian cafe or the Prague pub or the Berlin kneipe. Or the upscale New York restaurant or two. Oh, so many places. Except. Well, except you see where they ended up. I hadn’t looked at those matches in, oh, 25 years at least. I guess it was time. So I hauled down the bowl and spilled the contents onto the bed. (Though first I blew off the dust. Cough.) And there they were. My travel memories, laid out before me. Or at least, some memories. Less extensive than I’d thought. Why were there so many identical matchbooks? Like, a fistful from the Churchill Hotel in London? I didn’t remember ever staying there. (Ah, because those turned out to be my husband’s, who was, apparently, a matchbook kleptomaniac on his business trips.) There were also a number of specimens from the Hotel Imperial in Vienna. Now that I understood. A decade after my junior year abroad, I went back to Vienna a bunch of times as a reporter. It was so exciting to be able to stay at the Imperial, the elegant old hotel on the Ring that was infamous for being Hitler’s unofficial Austrian headquarters before the Anschluss. That wasn’t why I was excited to stay there, of course. It was because the Imperial was so . . . imperial — grand, Old World, a bit stuffy, yes, but luxe. And of course expensive. And I was on an expense account. It was heaven. Then years later still, I went back with my husband on a business trip. We took along our 14-month-old son, and he took his first steps in a room at the Imperial. My heart lights up just remembering. Worth grabbing another handful of match-

books for, obviously. The Austrian capital was (apart from the Churchill) the mother lode of our collection. There were a couple of books from the Hilton, with a pretty art nouveau design — and disintegrating strike strips — that made me wonder: When did I stay there? Maybe the OPEC meeting in the early 1980s, back when everyone knew what the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries was. And the time I met some friends in Vienna and insisted that we head to a heuriger — a Viennese wine garden — for dinner and ended up feeling super-sheepish for having dragged everyone to such a cheesy tourist trap. (Hey, but it’s a great memory.) There was also a little box from a Viennese ... shoe store. I know, weird. But it was a smoker’s world once upon a time. Then, however, the selection dwindled rapidly. There were matches from a hotel in Munich, where I once saw Klaus Kinski. (He was a famous German actor, father of Nastassja, a famous Hollywood actress.) There was the box from Oslo, where I bought the two beautiful Nordic sweaters that I still keep in my storage trunk, though they’re too small for me now. There were some matches from Stockholm, and a bunch from Seoul (my husband’s, again). But what threw me was what wasn’t there. Nothing from Berlin, where I spent endless days in the 1980s. Or Bonn, where I must have hit every restaurant in the nearly three years I lived there. Or Warsaw, destination of so many family visits. Nothing from Paris! All the times I’ve been — and with smokers, too — but no souvenir allumettes? How could this be? There was nothing from my own trip to the Far East and Australia/New Zealand. And virtually nothing from countless U.S. cities. Go figure. Here I thought I’d amassed a trove of keepsakes to ignite fond memories, but the memories turned out to be limited. Still, pawing through this pile did just kindle a blaze of nostalgia, didn’t it? So it looks as if I can extinguish it at last, use the books up one by one, letting each warm me with the glow of remembrance of things past.

“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”

American parents expect kids to help pay for college By Luke McGrath The Washington Post When parents take their children out to dinner, more often than not it’s expected that Mom or Dad will pick up the tab; when it comes to college, it’s a trickier question. A survey of U.S. parents with college-bound students by Discover Student Loans found 38% expect their child to pay for most of high-

er education, a 7% increase from 2018. Just 28% are willing and able to cover the entire cost of college, a 6% slide from last year. U.S. student debt hit $1.6 trillion in the first quarter of 2019, according to the Federal Reserve. As of September 2018, over 11% of student debt was more than 90 days delinquent or in default. In the final quarter of 2017, over 44.5 million Americans had

some form of outstanding student loans and almost 8 million Americans had a balance of $50,000 or more, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Paying for college is a worry for most parents. Three-quarters of those surveyed are at least somewhat concerned about how their child’s education costs will affect their own financial situation. Almost a third said

they’ll have to delay retirement to pay for it, the survey found. Despite those concerns, 70 percents of parents said they will not limit their child’s college choice based on price. More than half said they’re planning to rely on scholarships and grants to help cover the cost. The survey of about 1,500 parents of college-bound students (ages 16-18) was

carried out online in June 2019 with a 2.5% margin of error.

It’s more than a career search.

It’s your future.

“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”

Sprouting onions and scarred tomatoes How to tell whether fading produce is still safe to eat By Rachael Jackson Fresh fruits and vegetables can do some alarming things. They can crack open and change colors, sport tiny — or really big — scars, and even start trying to make new produce, right there on your kitchen counter. “When in doubt, throw it out,” you might tell yourself as you approach your garbage can, suspicious produce in hand. But hold on. Americans dump an estimated 150,000 tons of food every day, most of which is landfilled and generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas. You’re also squandering the resources used to produce that food. A 2018 study by researchers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and two universities found that every year, more than 30 million acres of cropland and 4.2 trillion gallons of water are dedicated to producing food that Americans throw away. So before you curse your overly ambitious farmers market run, consider taking a second look at that scarred tomato on your counter or the sprouting onion in your pantry. Because while sometimes “off-looking” fruits and veggies are telling you that they’re no longer good to eat,

often they’re simply showcasing harmless science lessons. Here’s what you might see in your fresh produce haul and what to make of it.

A sprouting onion

The onion looked fine when you took it home, but, now, it has sprouted green shoots. Is your stir-fry doomed? Not at all. The onion, prompted by factors such as age and temperature, simply moved to its next stage of life. “It”s certainly not dangerous to eat,” said Elizabeth Mitcham, of the University of California Postharvest Technology Center, noting that it just won’t be optimal quality. “If it’s in my cabinet, I’m not going to throw it away.” Having sent sugars and water to the sprout, the onion may taste a little bitter and possibly more fibrous; you’re more likely to notice this if you eat the onion raw. I’ve sauteed onions and garlic with small sprouts and haven’t noticed unpleasant flavors in the final dish. In fact, I usually forget about the sprouting by the time I sit down to eat my meal. As for the sprout itself, the “Waste-Free Kitchen Handbook” urges treating it like a green onion, though Cook’s Illustrated taste testers found the green shoots unpleasant. Give it a try and decide for yourself. And, of course, potato sprouts are an entirely different story. We’ll get to that in a moment.

A green potato

A number of vegetables, including potatoes, garlic,

onions and carrots, will develop green patches if exposed to light — the better to photosynthesize. But in potatoes, something a little extra, and a little dangerous, happens, too. Natural or artificial light prompts the creation of defensive toxins called glycoalkaloids that can cause digestive distress, headaches and neurological issues if consumed in significant volumes. But before you pitch your potatoes at the first hint of green, consider that such glycoalkaloids naturally occur in potatoes at harmless levels and even contribute to flavor. Additionally, the human body tends to excrete the toxins quickly, without incident, and you’ll probably notice a bitter taste on the first bite of any seriously glycoalkaloid-riddled tubers. When Nora Olsen, potato specialist for the University of Idaho, encounters a green potato, her first concern is flavor, not poisoning her family. Noting that potatoes in the United States are bred for low glycoalkaloid content and that you need to ingest quite a lot to get sick, she advises cutting off lightly greened patches and pitching any potatoes with large green areas. If serving young children, err on the conservative side. Potato sprouts also pack higher levels of glycoalkaloids. Olsen doesn’t worry much about pen-tip-sized sprouts and suggests just rubbing them off when you wash your potatoes. Bigger sprouts, along with the “eye” they sprouted from, should be cut

off, but the potato itself may be dehydrated and not worth salvaging.

A scarred tomato

Like us, when fruits and vegetables suffer scrapes, they naturally seal up the wounds. Unlike us, however, they don’t form scabs that fall off to reveal new tissue. So, the scars, made up of a woody material with pathogen-fighting properties, stick around on tomatoes and other types of produce. Seeing a big scar? That’s likely evidence of an injury that dates back to the tomato’s early days; the scar just grew with the tomato. Tiny scratches might tell a story of rough handling during harvest. If you see an asterisk pattern on top of your tomato, or concentric rings, you’re probably looking at the tomato’s answer to stretch marks. It likely got an unexpected influx of water in the field, grew too fast, cracked open and then healed the cracks. Many heirloom tomatoes, not bred for aesthetic perfection, are more likely to develop scars. No matter the cause, if the scar is dry and not showing mold or rot, the tomato is safe to eat. At the store, I deliberately select tomatoes with dry scars because I worry others will pick over them and they’ll go to waste. I don’t notice small scars once I’ve made my sandwich or shakshuka. In my kitchen I do, however, cut around big, thick scars; they’ll likely have an unappealing

An apple with patches of brown, corky skin

A number of factors can cause apples to develop rough, brown skin, but excessive moisture is a common culprit, especially amid the wet springs of the East Coast. Known as russeting, the rough brown skin often starts around the little dip where the stem attaches and radiates outward. The pattern makes perfect sense when you consider how water might collect and drip down the apple. Certain varieties, such as Golden Delicious, are more susceptible to russeting. While the appearance may be off-putting, it doesn’t negatively impact flavor. In fact, some people swear they taste better.

A moldy peach

Aside from not tasting very good, moldy and rotting food sometimes harbors pathogens and toxins that can make you sick. What if it’s just a little mold? For soft foods, such as peaches, the USDA recommends discarding the entire item because the mold could have penetrated it thoroughly. For harder foods, such as carrots or bell peppers, cut off the affected area and eat the rest. Mitcham, with the UC Postharvest Technology Center, said that one moldy strawberry doesn’t doom the entire carton. “I will take it out as quickly as possible because otherwise it might spread to others in the container,” she said.
