“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”

Colorado woman dresses in costumes to read to sick children By Cathy Free The Washington Post For most of her life, Rachel Oehlert has struggled with dyslexia, often becoming confused when looking at words on a page or seeing letters as backward or upside down. When her nervousness about reading aloud in grade school continued into adulthood, Oehlert,

24, of Thornton, Colo., thought she needed something radical to jolt her out of her fear. In 2016, she came up with an idea. She bought a princess costume with some money she had been given for her birthday, then arranged to visit a children’s hospital bedecked as Belle from “Beauty and the Beast.” After stroll-

ing into her first hospital room, she opened a book and started to read to the children. Her voice was strong and confident, and the children were enthralled. She did not know who loved it more, her or them. Three years later, not only is Oehlert more self-assured about reading, but she also

has gotten 15 others to volunteer with her as princesses and superheroes and read to sick children. Several times a month, they visit places such as Children’s Hospital Colorado and Brent’s Place, a longterm home away from home for families of children receiving treatment for life-threatening illnesses, in Aurora,

Colo. She turned the program into a charity and gave it the name Truly Make Believe. Volunteers take along storybooks to read based on their characters, but the most important thing, Oehlert said, is to simply scatter a little magic. “So many of us need to have that moment

Some Impossible Burgers touch beef Whoppers, but Burger King doesn’t call them vegan Is a vegan burger that touches beef fat still a vegan burger? By Leslie Patton, Deena Shanker, Olivia Rockeman Bloomberg That’s the question fast-food chains are grappling with as they increasingly add plantbased options to their menus — but not necessarily the expanded infrastructure to cook the patties separately. At Burger King, for example, which will begin offering a burger from Impossible Foods nationwide next week, the employees will cook the trendy patty with the same broiler as regular burgers and chicken unless a customer asks for it to be prepared separately, said Chris Finazzo, Burger King’s president in the Americas region. A&W in the U.S., which is trialing the Beyond Meat patty at about 20 locations, also cooks the burgers on the same grill, a spokesman said. “We use the same cooking method” Burger King’s Finazzo said. “This product tastes exactly like a Whopper. We wouldn’t want to lend our name to just anything. It looks like beef, smells like beef, has the same texture as beef.” Restaurant Brands International-owned Burger King says 90 percent of the people who ordered the Impossible Whopper during a trial run this spring are meat eaters, which means most diners may not care if their faux-meat patties are cooked alongside classic beef ones. It doesn’t label the product as vegan and allows guests to ask for their Impossible Whopper to be cooked in the oven instead, according to the company. But for consumers who actually avoid meat, the potential for contamination could be concerning.

Impossible Foods said it can’t control how its restaurants cook its product. “We could not force (and we don’t even ask) our restaurant partners to change their business practices, including where and how they cook their burgers,” a spokeswoman for Impossible said. Beyond Meat didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment. It’s easier to separate meat from nonmeat at fast-food chains where food is cooked in convection ovens or other more individualized methods, rather than with large broilers or grills. At Dunkin’ locations offering a Beyond Meat sausage, the sandwich is cooked separately on individual pieces of parchment paper and the patties are stored “on their own individual portion trays to further prevent cross-contamination,” a spokesman said. Tim Hortons, another Restaurant Brands chain, said it also cooks and stores separately its Beyond Meat items from its meat. White Castle says it cooks the Impossible Slider on a separate grill. If space is limited during a busy time, workers clean the grill before cooking it “out of respect for those who are seeking a vegan or vegetarian experience,” vice president Jamie Richardson said in an email. But most Americans, except those practicing a strict vegetarian or vegan lifestyle, may not really care. A growing group of consumers are calling themselves flexitarians, meaning they’re trying to eat less meat, not eliminate it all together. At A&W in the U.S., for example, guests were asking for the Beyond Meat burger with bacon and cheese, said Sarah Mueller, vice president of marketing. As a result, this week the restaurants started offering the doctored-up version.

“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”

Are you a Ridezilla? Check your Uber rating cause. Uber’s passenger ratings are supposed to reflect a pattern of behavior, and a lower score suggests you keep pulling irritating stuff, whether you know it or not. For riders, this can be distressing. A low Uber rating is both inconvenient and inscrutable. It’s the baggage they carry into every back seat. Josh Scott can’t comprehend why his Uber rating is so low. He struggles to remember any moments that would have warranted negative reviews. He has never stumbled into a ride super intoxicated. No verbal altercations or 15-minute-late arrivals. A part-time Uber driver himself, he tries to stay attuned to his behavior when he’s the passenger. And yet, somehow, his Uber rating dropped to 4.57 out of 5. That might seem high, but it’s not. Uber offers no official ratings breakdown, so riders have been left to hash out the question of which scores are good, bad and normal on Quora and Reddit and the online ride-hailing forum RideGuru. The basic consensus is this: Anything above a 4.9 is excellent, possibly even worth bragging about on Tinder; the 4.8 range is good; the 4.7 range is merely fine; the 4.6 range is nearing the borderline. Once your rating dips below 4.6, drivers start thinking you might

be a little sketchy. Scott doesn’t feel sketchy. Mostly he feels confused. “The only thing I’ve done is just be pleasant, be on time,” he said. When drivers want to talk, he’s more than happy to have a conversation. Some rating drops are easier to figure out. Diane Lee, an Amherst College student, saw her rating

plummet after a bar crawl with friends in Cape Town during a summer abroad. While there were no arguments or accidents, there were seven or eight boisterous 20-somethings packed into a couple Ubers. Lee awoke the following morning to find her 4.8 rating down to a 4.2. “I was pretty upset the whole next day,”

saidLee, whose rating has since crept up to 4.38. “It did feel like a moral judgment.” Briana Trujillo, who shared a dorm with Lee in Cape Town, saw her near-perfect rating dip to a 4.7. She didn’t have trouble hailing rides on the Uber app afterward, but the sting lingered. “It matters more to me than Insta likes,”

Trujillo said. “Insta likes are distant. This is based on your direct relationship to a person.” It’s just a number. But it feels personal, a referendum on character. “If every Democratic candidate was asked their Uber rating during a debate,” says Kaivan Shroff, who is based in

By Travis DeShong The Washington Post When Stephen Rowe would drive for Uber, he would try to accommodate his passengers. But the Evian Lady was just too much. “Oh my God!” Rowe remembers the woman crying from the back seat. He had just handed her a bottle of Walgreens’s generic-brand water, and she’d taken it without looking up from her phone. Now, she was sending it back. “I only drink Evian!” she said. That’s when Rowe decided he’d had enough. He pulled over to a street near a shopping center outside downtown Grand Rapids, Mich., and asked the passenger to get out — which she did, slamming the door as she exited. (Rowe says he still helped her unload her luggage.) What are drivers to do with these obnoxious patrons, these Ridezillas of the here-to-there economy? Booting them to the curb is one solution, but the less confrontational option is to give them a low rating on the Uber app once they’re out of the car. Rowe did both; he gave the Evian Lady one star, wishing he could go lower. Justice? Maybe so, in that case — though we don’t know the woman’s side of it, and outright ejection is arguably a hard punishment for being a water snob. But other riders worry that they’ve been pegged as Ridezillas without good

Boston and has a goodnot-great 4.70 rating, “I think people would have things to say about that the next day.” Jonathan Burns, a Florida lawyer who sits at a 4.6, has had a number of puzzled drivers ask him why his rating is so low. He doesn’t use the service often and when he does, travels with his wife and kids.

Burns suspects that a handful of pesky onestar reviews are disproportionately depressing his score. Over the past few years, he has turned away several rides, citing the vehicles’ pungent cigarette odor. There are online listicles detailing the annoying things riders do — eating smelly foods, vaping, not tipping well — to help riders brush up on Uber etiquette, but questions of decorum are subject to debate.

How hard do you close a door for it to “slam?” Are you penalized differently for smelling like curry instead of hamburgers? What if financial constraints affect how much you can tip? In May, Uber announced that it would begin to ban passengers with consistently low ratings. The company didn’t say what the cutoff would be, but stated that it would vary by location. Riders with a “significantly below

average rating” based on the local average would receive warnings, along with tips for how to boost their ratings and avoid exile. Uber reassured its customers that it expected “only a small number of riders to be ultimately impacted by ratings-based deactivations.” Still, it’s an uncomfortable thought, banishing people from services based on an inscrutable social score. It seems even dicier when you consider how cultural bias might play into the scoring. Uber ratings are supposed to be based on a rider’s behavior, but it also reflects a driver’s perceptions. Drivers might interpret the behavior of passengers differently based on race, gender or ethnicity. Rodney Hays, a Frisco, Texas, resident who drove for Uber for 18 months, never experienced the typical bratty or degenerate behavior associated with poorly rated Uber riders. He did, however, note a racial and cultural common denominator among those with low scores. They would tend to be foreigners, he said, typically from Middle Eastern or Asian countries. “If you have a jaded view” he said, “a foreign accent and tone can come across as rude.” Erika Lee, an Arizonabased reporter, says she has had the rating system weaponized

against her by drivers who would hit on her, then become irritated when she’d rebuff their advances. “I remember pretending to fall asleep because one driver kept asking me personal questions about my dating life and ethnicity,” said Lee, who hovers at a 4.5. Riders can rate back, of course. Uber drivers must maintain a 4.6 rating on their most recent 100 rides to stay active. In theory, giving drivers the ability to rate their passengers evens the power balance on any given Uber ride. “I think having equality, having a system that’s the same for riders and drivers, is fair,” says Harry Campbell, a former Uber driver who lives in California and founded the Rideshare Guy blog. If the system is fair, that doesn’t mean it can always be relied upon to tell Uber drivers and riders about whom they’re about to share a car with. It didn’t tell Stephen Rowe everything about the Evian Lady, whom he remembers being rated 4.70 when he picked her up — before he booted her for making a snooty remark about his water selection. Rowe’s driver rating was a 4.92. The system didn’t tell her everything about him, either.

Shortage of homes for sale could worsen before it improves Local market data is most important when buying or selling a home By Michele Lerner The Washington Post Predicting the trajectory of the housing market on a national scale can be tough. If you’re a buyer or a seller, the most important information you need is on a hyper-local scale, so paying attention to neighborhood or regional market data may be more valuable than a national report. At the same time, national housing

-

reports do offer trend data that could be helpful to your buying or selling decisions. A recent analysis by Realtor.com indicates that a shift in the housing market across the country, lasting into 2020, could make it even tougher for home buyers. Late in 2018 and earlier in 2019, inventory, which refers to the number of homes for sale, was rising and giving buyers more options. But the pace of growth has slowed, and Realtor.com anticipates that inventory could decline for the first time this year in October. The number of listings rose 6.4 percent in January 2019, compared with the number of homes for sale in January 2018, but that

rate of increase has slowed incrementally each month this year. In June, the number of listings rose 2.8 percent during the past 12 months. If this trend continues, overall inventory could reach near record lows by early 2020, Danielle Hale, chief economist for Realtor. com, said in a statement. While some of the low inventory is attributed to homes being purchased quickly by buyers, there are also fewer new listings coming on the market. In June, the number of newly listed homes — which is different from inventory that includes homes that have been on the market for a month or longer — declined by 2.3 percent, compared

homeowners purchased a home or refinanced with a mortgage rate below today’s rates. These homeowners are less inclined to move because they would be likely to pay a higher mortgage rate. In the Washington, D.C., area, new listings over a 12-month period declined by 7.0 per-

with June 2018. Hale speculates that among the reasons people are not putting their homes on the market are: the preference among baby boomers to age in place rather than move; reduced consumer confidence in the economy; and “ratelock,” which refers to the fact that many

She and the other volunteers use their own money to buy costumes, wigs and makeup to bring their characters to life. “Walking into a room knowing that you’re going to make someone happy is the most rewarding feeling I’ve ever experienced,” said Oehlert, whose volunteers portray more than 20 characters, including Snow White, SpiderMan, Rapunzel and Darth Vader. Families at Brent’s Place always look forward to visits from Oehlert and her friends, said Cassie Davis, the program coordinator. “The joy brought to the kids and their caregivers is a powerful medicine that we would never be able to provide without Truly Make Believe,” Davis said. “They enable our kids to escape what they’re going through and experience pure magic.” Oehlert was diagnosed with dyslexia and dysgraphia in 2005 when she was 10 after years of struggling in school. “It was difficult,” she said, “but now I see it as a learning difference, not a disability. People with different brains learn in different ways. I see the world differently — and I think the world needs that.” In December 2016, after buying a Belle costume and visiting the hospital, Oehlert made her first visit to Brent’s Place to read children a Christmas story and”answer questions about living with a Beast.”

“They actually thought that I was Belle, and that was exactly what I’d hoped to achieve,” she said. “After that, I was hooked. I knew that I had to keep going.” Over the next year, she enlisted help from volunteers, including 16-year-old Olivia Katsirubas of Broomfield, Colorado, who portrays Tinker Bell, Alice in Wonderland and other characters. “I love seeing faces light up and enjoy seeing hope and laughter in kids who are facing extreme difficulties at such a young age,” Katsirubas said. For Thomas Marshall, a mechanical engineering major at Colorado State University who regularly suits up as a Jedi, volunteering with Truly Make Believe is a way to help children believe in the impossible. “We aim to help kids be strong-hearted like a princess, to hope like a Jedi and to be brave like a superhero, which is what they truly are,” Marshall said. Oehlert, who often visits children in care facilities on their birthdays, said the ultimate compliment is when nobody wants her to go home. “If I could, I would do this every single day,” she said. “The characters might be make-believe. But the connections that I’ve made with these kids and their families are very real.”

“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”

Giant hotel chain is getting rid of single-use toiletries

001484215r2

company expects that to amount to about 200 million little bottles a year. CEO Keith Barr said the decision followed an announcement last year to remove single-use plastic straws from its hotels by the end of 2019.”But that’s just a baby step,” Barr says. “The next biggest thing we saw out there was single-use bathroom amenities.”The U.K.-based company, whose brands include Holiday Inn, Kimpton, Six Senses, InterContinental, Crowne Plaza and Staybridge Suites,

has already been operating without mini toiletry bottles at some properties. The luxury Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas uses refillable ceramic dispensers, and Kimpton Hotels is making the transition as well. Newer brands including Voco, Even and Avid launched with bulk-size amenities, and more than 1,000 Holiday Inn Express hotels have made the change. Barr said reactions have been overwhelmingly positive from hotel guests at those properties.

“I probably get a complaint now and then from a customer who liked to take them home,” he said. “I”m happy to get those complaints because I know we’re doing the right thing for the environment.” Chekitan Dev, a professor of marketing and branding at Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration, said he expects some guests will chafe at the change. He said his research shows that 83 percent of hotel guests expect to use packaged bathroom products, and

86 percent actually do. When it comes to larger dispensers, 42 percent expect to use them, and only 24 percent of them do, he said. “However, as the ‘typical’ hotel guest morphs from a boomer to a millennial, concern for the environment is now a top-10 ‘must have’ in a hotel stay,” he said in an email. “I expect the change from individual to bulk-sized bathroom amenities will be ultimately welcomed as a brand standard worldwide.”Tuesday’s announcement

was good news for those who advocate for sustainability practices in the travel industry. Jo Hendrickx, founder and CEO of Travel Without Plastic, said in an email that IHG had previously used the company’s guide to help their purchasing process. “We welcome their commitment today to move to larger size toiletries as part of their efforts to reduce plastic waste,” she said in an email. “We think this sets a good example for the industry and hope others follow suit.”

By Hannah Sampson The Washington Post One of the world’s largest hotel companies is doing away with a tiny perk: miniature versions of shampoo, conditioner and other bathroom products. InterContinental Hotels Group, with a portfolio that includes more than 5,600 hotels and nearly 843,000 rooms, announced Tuesday it will transition to offering toiletries in bulk-sized dispensers at all its properties by 2021 in an effort to reduce plastic waste.
