“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”
For pro players 150 years ago, it was a very different ballgame By Fred Bowen The Washington Post Readers may have noticed that Major League Baseball (MLB) players are wearing a patch on their uniforms: MLB 150. The patch celebrates the 150th anniversary of the first openly professional baseball team, the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings. Recently, I have been reading about baseball in the 1800s in a wonderful book, “The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract.” Back then, baseball was very different from baseball today. How different? Take a look. In the 1870s, pitchers didn’t throw overhand. They threw underhand
(like softball) from a pitcher’s box about 45 feet from home plate. And get this, the batter could order a high or a low pitch. They moved the pitcher’s mound to the current 60 feet 6 inches in 1893, and the batter couldn’t order the pitch he wanted after about 1887. It has always been three strikes you’re out, but in the early days of baseball it took nine (!) balls to get a walk. After changing the rule several times, they decided in 1889 on the current rule of four balls for a walk. And until 1901, a foul ball was never a strike. It was just a do-over. So there were not a lot of strikeouts or walks.
But there were plenty of errors because not all the fielders wore gloves. Some tried to field the ball barehanded. Ouch! The last position player to play without a glove was Jerry Denny, who retired (barehanded) after the 1894 season. Denny played third base for the Louisville Colonels. Denny was ambidextrous, meaning he could throw right-handed or left-handed. He usually threw right-handed, but if he fielded the ball with his left hand and was in a hurry, he would throw with his left hand. Players’ responsibilities were different in the old days. They

were expected to pitch in for the business. For example, if you went to a game back then, a player might take your ticket at the gate. Imagine handing your ticket to Max Scherzer or Anthony Rendon at Nationals Park. In addition, the players would sometimes help the owners build the ballparks. Of course, the parks were simpler in the 1800s. They were usually made of wooden fences and wooden grandstands. The big problem with ballparks was they often burned down. James reports “several parks as usual” burned down during the 1890s. In the early days of baseball, the home plate

was made of stone, iron or wood. Players kept getting hurt by the plate. So a player — Robert M. Keating — invented the white, rubber home plate with a black border that is still used today. Finally, some of the teams had weird names or nicknames. There were the Boston Beaneaters (18931906), Brooklyn Bridegrooms (1888-1891, 1896-1899), Chicago Orphans (1898-1902) and St. Louis Perfectos (1899). One-hundred-andfifty years of professional baseball has meant a lot of changes. Imagine what the game will be like 150 years from now.

Preferring one hand over the other could be simply random variation. Studies have shown, however, that males are more likely than females to be left-handed.

Police respond to bear break-in By Alex Horton The Washington Post The thieves cased the area around the McGregor Mountain foothills, on the hunt for vehicles with unlocked doors — which helps you open them if you don’t have opposable thumbs and you are also a bear. Local black bears in northern Colorado have channeled fictitious velociraptors, opening car doors to swipe food so often that they break into vehicles without smelling food just to see if they get lucky. On Saturday, one bear tried its luck in a home in Estes Park, attracted to the scent of trash in the area, the town’s police department said in a statement. After the bear got into the house, officers were dispatched to respond. The bear was not having that. It turned tail and ran when officers arrived, paying no mind to a wall blocking its way. The bear “forcibly breached a hole in the wall like the ‘KoolAid Man,’ and made its escape,” the department said on Facebook. The department was referring to Kool-Aid man, the anthropomorphic drink mascot that destroys brick walls as it shouts “Ohhh yeah!” — never seeming to baffle or terrify children and, in at least one commercial, helps authorities stop bank robbers. Estes Park police referred questions to
Colorado Parks and Wildlife, which did not return a request for comment. But the police statement included information from the agency, which described the intricate and escalating ways in which bears have sought food in the area. Bears have grown accustomed to breaking into cars to steal food, the statement said. But they have even gone into cars that had “nor even a crumb,” the agency said.
“This shows that some individual bears are so habituated to receiving food from vehicles that some are going car to car seeing if they are unlocked, even if they don’t see or smell food,” the agency said. Bears are so good at breaking into things that six grizzlies outside Yellowstone National Park became professional product testers, mauling containers to evaluate if they can be certified “bear resistant.”

Greenland on track for a record melt year By Andrew Freedman The extreme weather event that caused widespread melting across the Greenland ice sheet last week, sending temperatures soaring above the freezing mark at the highest point on the island, may have ended, but the melt season overall — which has 35 to 40 days to go, is poised to set a new and more significant record. According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) in Boulder, Colorado, Greenland has already lost a total of over 250 billion tons from a combination of melt runoff and low total snowfall earlier in the season. That’s enough to fill more than 90 million Olympic-sized swim-
ming pools. Or to put it another way, that much water could sustain the global population’s water intake for more than 40 years. During the extreme melt event last week, Greenland lost 12 to 24 billion tons of ice per day, which was 6 to 18 billion tons above the typical rates seen on these dates seen during the period from 1981 to 2010. All told, a computer model that tracks ice mass gained or lost by snowfall and snow and ice melt, but does not include the ice mass lost by glaciers which terminate in the ocean waters, found that the ice sheet lost a total of about 55 billion tons through melt runoff during the extreme melt event,
W H E R E W H E R E
which was about 40 billion tons more than the 1981 to 2010 average for the same time period, NSIDC reported. “The glacier flow system also contributes to loss, and will likely add another 60 to 100 billion tons of loss (as icebergs),” said Ted Scambos, a senior research scientist at the University of Colorado. According to Scambos, 2012 eventually reached 300 billion tons of surface ice mass loss from Greenland. The rate of ice loss in Greenland has increased sixfold since the 1980s, according to a recent study, with the ice sheet responsible for raising global sea levels by 13.7 millimeters since 1972, half of which occurred in just the past

8 years. A combination of natural climate variability, such as a pattern of atmospheric pressure known as the North Atlantic Oscillation, plus long-term global warming has led to a much warmer than average summer melt season in Greenland and throughout the Arctic. In response to the above average temperatures, Arctic sea ice is well on its way to one of the five lowest levels on record since satellite records began in 1979. Ice-free areas feature much above average sea surface temperatures, which is reinforcing the transport of mild air into the region, and helping to melt more sea ice. Sea ice ended the month

of July at a record low, and was continuing to drop sharply into early August. As of this week, there is no sea ice off the shores of Alaska, something that has never occurred before so early in the melt season. Ice has

“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”
Humans doomed cave bears By Ben Guarino The Washington Post Cave bears, Ursus spelaeus, must have made magnificent impressions on the Neanderthals and modern humans who encountered them. The animals, burly and broad-shouldered, lumbered all over Europe. True to their name, they slept and wintered in caves, emerging each spring to blink awake in the Pleistocene sunlight. The biggest cave bears grew to 2,000 pounds, hundreds of pounds larger than the largest brown bears alive today. Now the bears’ bones are scattered in the caves they once occupied. They went extinct around 20,000 years ago. What killed off the bears is a question that’s gotten a lot of attention from scientists. For one thing, they have lots of bear fossils to examine. What’s more, the cave bears were closely related to brown bears — yet they met very different fates. A study published recently in the journal Scientific Reports will not put the question totally to rest. But the genetic data wrung from cave
bear bones make a compelling case that humans played a large role in their extinction. “It’s a very nice study” that shows something “quite profound happened to the global cave bear population around 40,000 years ago,” said Axel Barlow, a biologist at the University of Potsdam, in Germany, who was not involved with this research. Last year, Barlow and his colleagues showed that living brown bears contain DNA from cave bears, which means the two different species mated, just as humans and Neanderthals did. Cave bears split from the brown bear lineage around 1.2 million years ago. The authors of the new study examined mitochondrial DNA from 130 bears. Mitochondria provide a cell with energy; in bears as in humans, mitochondria and their DNA are inherited only from mom through the egg cell. Subtle differences in this genetic material allowed the scientists to calculate the numbers of female bears in during the species’s final years on the planet.
“Based on the diversity and the radiocarbon dates of mitochondrial genomes, you can model the effective female population size through time,” said study author Verena Schünemann, a professor of paleogenetics at the University of Zurich. This bear population remained stable from 200,000 to 50,000 years ago. At around 40,000 years, it began to crash. Twenty thousand years later, cave bears vanished. Some researchers have proposed that climate change felled the bears. Ice sheets advanced and shrank during the Pleistocene Epoch, the period from 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago. Wear on the bears’ teeth suggests the animals mostly ate plants. (Though more recent discoveries of tooth marks on bear bones suggests they ate the bodies of other cave bears.) If vegetation shifted with the ice cycles, perhaps the bears struggled with smaller food supplies. But, the study authors note, in Europe between 200,000 to 50,000 years ago, the climate cooled
weapon embedded in a cave bear’s spine. More recently, a group of scientists in Italy, studying butcher marks on bear bones, suggested that Neanderthals hunted the animals when they were most vulnerable — as the animals awoke from spring hibernation. “They probably killed cave bears for the same reasons that they killed other large mammals,” Bocherens said, meaning for their skins and meat. Cave bears returned to the caves where they were born, Schünemann said. As human populations grew, requiring more shelter for longer periods of time, humans may have ejected the bears from their birth caves. Schünemann would not totally absolve climate change. There “might be still a synergistic effect of both factors: humans and climate,” she said. It may be that humans applied pressure to the bears as climate caused their population to fragment and food supplies
and warmed twice without any apparent impact on the bears. Or, as study author and University of Tübingen paleobiologist Hervé Bocherens put it, “Cave bear populations did not show significant fluctuations during climatic oscillations before 50,000 years ago.” Instead, the drastic population decline began at the same time as the arrival of modern humans in Europe. “We can’t rewind the clock, taking humans out of the picture, and see whether the cave bears survived or not” Barlow said. “The emerging picture for cave bears, shown by not only this study but also decades of careful research, is that the influx of anatomically modern humans in Europe matches very well — both in timing and geographically — with the decline in cave bear.” Physical evidence shows humans killed the bears. More than a decade ago, paleontologists discovered the tip of a flint
diminish. Cave bears, mammoths, giant sloths and other megaherbivores of ages past were, in the lingo of biologists, ecosystem engineers. As they chowed, pooped and stomped, these animals spread plants and recycled nutrients. The grassy steppes woolly mammoths once tended have collapsed into tundra and Arctic desert. Giant sloths once spread avocado seeds across South America. Cave bears brought great amounts of organic material into caverns, something no living European creature can do. If humans helped destroy the bears, then the animals join a list of creatures we deemed too tasty, too annoying, too docile — too anything — to live. Only in the last sliver of human history have we begun defending rare species through efforts such as the Endangered Species Act, which the Trump administration recently moved to weaken.

“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”
The ‘squares’ who saved Woodstock By Gillian Brockell The Washington Post When Woodstock 50 was canceled last month, co-founder Michael Lang attributed the failure to a variety of causes: not enough money, last-minute venue changes when local permits fell through, artists threatening to pull out after not getting paid. Amazingly, the original Woodstock Music
and Art Fair in 1969 had all the same problems — and then some. But the show still went on, becoming a legendary counterculture moment that helped define the 1960s. Credit for its success doesn’t necessarily go to Lang, who at the time was a young head shop owner whose only other event had been a failure; or the other co-founders, all
of whom were inexperienced men in their 20s. No, Woodstock was saved at every step of the way by decidedly non-groovy regular people. Some of them were even “old” and maybe “squares,” to use the parlance of the day. First, ther’s the wellknown story of Max Yasgur, the dairy farmer who stepped in to give the festival a venue
after it was booted from its original location 40 miles away in Wallkill, New York. “Max Yasgur was a law-and-order Republican. But he also believed in personal freedom and freedom of expression, and that’s what he hung his hat on,” said neighbor John Conway in the PBS documentary “Woodstock: Three Days That Defined a Generation.”
Then there was the advertising. One of the things the citizens of Wallkill were opposed to was Woodstock’s original poster — created by the Fillmore East club’s in-house artist, David Edward Byrd — which featured a nude woman, Cupids, hearts and arrows in a blend of psychedelic and neoclassical styles. It also notably didn’t feature the names of
any of the bands playing. And after the move to Yasgur’s farm — the wrong location. The posters had to be redesigned, but Byrd was nowhere to be found. (He told the Los Angeles Daily News he was spending the month in a Caribbean village with no phone.) So in stepped Arnold Skolnick — a New York

advertising artist in his 30s who was more “Mad Men” than “Easy Rider.” “They gave it to me on Thursday . . . and I brought it to them on Monday afternoon,” Skolnick told the Stamford Advocate in 2010. “It was just another job, but it became famous.” The catbird perched on a guitar was a simple design made with

paper cutouts. Lang later claimed credit for the design, but Skolnick says that isn’t true. Both Byrd and Skolnick ended up attending the festival, but Skolnick left on the first day when he saw how crowded it was getting. Trapped by the incoming traffic, he and his wife stayed in a nearby hotel until they could go home. “If I had been 16 or 17, I probably would have enjoyed it,” he told the Advocate. Now 82, Skolnick
is still making art in Easthampton, Massachusetts, where he lives. The poster didn’t make him rich — since he was a hired gun, he doesn’t own the rights to it. He has received only one royalty check, for $15, he said. By the second day of the festival, long after Skolnick had split, the organizers had run out of food. And that’s when the citizens of nearby Bethel, New York, many of whom weren’t too keen on being inundated by hippies, came to
the rescue. After a plea for help on local radio, residents pulled canned goods from their pantries and produce from their fields. “It was on the radio, bring whatever you can. And I decided to send eggs, because it’s an egg area,” said resident Gordon Winarick in the PBS documentary. “So we hard-boiled hundreds of thousands of eggs.” The donations were delivered via helicopter, almost certainly saving
hangry hippies from rioting. Speaking of helicopters, there were many unexpected costs for Woodstock organizers. And when they couldn’t get fences built on time, they lost the ability to make money. That came to a head Saturday evening — when many of the biggest acts, such as Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Who, were scheduled to play. Some had refused to go onstage unless they were paid in cash beforehand,
according to History. com. Woodstock organizer John Roberts, a 23-year-old heir to the Polident fortune, agreed to put his trust fund up as collateral if they could find an emergency loan. Shortly before midnight, they persuaded a local bank manager to open up and give them the funds. Unfortunately, the name of that bank manager — like good vibes and 8-track tapes — is lost to history.
