“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”

Violent history of pumpkin spice from Starbucks By Gillian Brockell The Washington Post Pumpkin-spice latte season is starting even earlier this year, with the famous drink spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves pouring into Starbucks coffee shops on Tuesday. But underneath those fuzzy-sweater vibes, the spices in “the PSL” have a dark history. Particularly nutmeg. It’s a story of war, genocide and slavery. The variety of nutmeg we’re familiar with is native to the Banda Islands in what is now

Indonesia. In the Middle Ages, the Bandanese became rich trading the spice — plus mace, which comes from the same plant, and cloves, which also grew there, according to Atlas Obscura. Nutmeg made it to the lips of Chinese and Malay elites, and to Europeans via Arab traders, who kept the location of the source secret. All that changed in 1511, when Portuguese explorer António de Abreu became the first European to land on the Banda Islands, according to food historian Michael Kro-

ndl. Portugal, which was absorbed into the Spanish empire in 1568, had a foothold in the nutmeg trade for nearly 100 years, but the Bandanese resisted their efforts to gain more control. The Dutch showed up in 1599, and everything got gruesome soon afterward. They seized the islands, built a fort and informed the Bandanese they were no longer allowed to trade with anyone else, according to historian Vincent Loth. The Bandanese signed contracts agreeing to the arrangement, though it

is unclear if they understood what they were agreeing to, Loth wrote. They ignored the contracts anyway, continuing to trade with whomever they always had, plus a new partner on the scene — the English. This led to a number of violent skirmishes between the Dutch and the Bandanese, Loth wrote. Then in 1621, Dutch Governor-General Jan Pieterszoon Coen led 2,000 troops on an assault on the Bandanese. Their leaders were beheaded, and the wealthy were enslaved

and sent overseas. The remaining inhabitants fled into the mountains, where, over the following months, nearly all met one of three fates: They were murdered in Dutch attacks, starved to death, or jumped off cliffs in despair. By the end of the massacre, only about 1,000 of an estimated 15,000 Bandanese had survived. Some escaped to other islands, where their descendants still live, while others were enslaved to teach the Dutch how to cultivate nutmeg themselves.

Future Focused

Even after the near-extinction of the Bandanese, the English continued to fight with the Dutch for control of the nutmeg monopoly. The matter was settled in 1667 when the English agreed to end its claims to the Bandas in exchange for an island the Dutch considered worthless: Manhattan. And, for the record, Manhattan boasts 240 Starbucks that are peddling pumpkin-spice lattes at this very moment.

Getting the security deposit back By Michele Lerner The Washington Post Renters often choose to lease rather than buy their home to take advantage of the flexibility of being able to move without the burden of selling a property. But moving into a rental typically requires a security deposit — which renters

want to get back in full when they move. We asked the experts at Apartment List for tips about how to make sure you get your security deposit refunded and what to do if your landlord doesn’t return your deposit as expected. To maximize your chances of getting your

security deposit back, Apartment List recommends the following four steps before you move in: 1. Read the fine print. Read the early termination clause of your lease agreement, as it should contain requirements for early lease termination that may allow you to get your deposit back. Your

list sounds like a chore, but it will help you avoid paying for damages you didn’t cause. 3. Get everything in writing. When you are done with the inspection, ask your landlord to sign the list of defects and marks. Ask for damages left by the previous tenant to be fixed prior to your move-in date. If that can’t be done, make sure to note in your lease which damages were there prior to the start of your lease. 4. Know your rights and local legislation. Depending on the state in which you live, there are most likely laws preventing landlords from charging unreasonably high deposits. There

plans might change, and you may need to move out earlier than expected. You might get a new job or decide to move in with your significant other. Early lease termination might cost you your security deposit. 2. Do a walk-through. Ask the landlord to give you a tour of the apartment before you move in. Create a checklist of all the different locations and items in your new apartment you need to inspect for damage or wear and tear. During your walk-through, carefully document all defects and marks no matter how insignificant they seem. Don’t forget to take photos for your records. Filling out a move-in check-

could also potentially be rules about time limits on how quickly the landlord needs to return the deposit to you. Usually, if the deposit is not returned in full or in part, the tenant must receive an itemized list of deductions. If your landlord refuses to return your security deposit when you move out, Apartment List recommends the following steps: 5. Ask for a list of deductions. Your landlord must provide an itemized statement in which they must list everything that was subtracted from your deposit. The list usually contains things like

missed rent, cleaning, repairs, the amount that was deducted for each and the balance left of the deposit. Deductions, such as repairs and cleaning, should include receipts supporting them. Your landlord must provide this paperwork within a certain number of days after your moveout date. The number of days varies depending on the state in which you live. 6. Send a demand let-

ter. If you tried negotiating for the return of the security deposit with your landlord to no avail, you will have to write a demand letter. Send it with certified mail and request a return receipt. In the letter make sure to state the amount you are requesting to have returned to you and the reasoning for it. State the facts and avoid emotionally charged content in your letter, as it may detract from its credibility. Instead, cite state security deposit laws, attach photo evidence, emails and receipts.

PAINT IT THE WAY

7. Get legal advice. If your former landlord hasn’t been communicating with you or you haven’t received your money back, it may be time to seek legal advice. Perhaps, if the law is on your side, you will need to file a lawsuit in the smallclaims court. Having a lawyer is not required in small-claims court, but it might be a good idea to get one. Legal fees can be included in your lawsuit. In some cases, you can sue for extra damages if the landlord acted in bad faith.

omeowners often take steps to winterize the interior of their homes in the weeks before winter’s arrival, but such efforts should extend to the outside of a home as well. Decks make for great gathering places when the weather permits. Decks are where many people spend their free time and eat their meals come spring and summer, when the temperatures climb and the sun sets well into the evening. But as summer turns to fall, homeowners must take measures to protect their decks from potentially harsh winter weather. • Inspect the deck for problems. Decks tend to be used more often in summer than any other time of year. That makes fall and early winter an ideal time to inspect for wear and tear and any additional issues

that may have cropped up throughout the summer. Damaged boards and loose handrails should be fixed before winter arrives, especially for homeowners who plan to use their decks in winter. Fixing such issues in winter and even into spring may be difficult thanks to harsh conditions, so make good use of the relatively calm autumn weather to fix any issues on the deck. • Clear the deck of potted plants. Even homeowners who intend to use their decks in winter should remove potted plants from the deck in the fall. The home improvement experts at HGTV note that moisture can get trapped between deck boards and plastic, wood or ceramic containers in cold weather, and that can contribute to mildew, discoloration or decay.

• Store unnecessary furniture. Homeowners who like to sit on their decks in winter will no doubt want to leave some furniture out over the winter. But those with lots of furniture for entertaining guests can likely move the majority of that furniture into a garage or shed for the winter. HGTV notes that doing so will prevent the potential formation of blemishes on the deck that can result from inconsistent weathering. • Remove snow, but do so carefully. Prolonged contact with snow and ice can damage a deck. As a result, homeowners should clear snow from their decks when accumulation is significant. HGTV recommends using a snow blower on the deck to avoid scarring. If a shovel must be used, push snow with the planks to reduce

the risk of damaging the deck. Homeowners who take steps to protect their decks throughout the winter months can ensure these popular areas are ready once entertaining season returns in the spring.
