Why a T. rex costume? ‘I’m just not a dress person.’ By Lisa Bonos The Washington Post The T. rex costume could have had several meanings: It could have been that the maid of honor who wore it to her sister’s wedding was critiquing marriage as an institution that should be extinct. It could have been a colorful rebuke of the $72 billion wedding industrial complex, where the average bridesmaid dress goes for $150. It could have been a cruel joke about someone being a Bridezilla. Christina Meador, 38, is the sister of the bride and maid of honor who was sweating profusely inside that dinosaur costume on an August day in Nebraska. She wasn’t making a state-

ment about marriage, she says. (She’s been married 16 years herself.) And it definitely wasn’t a comment on her sister. Meador just isn’t a dress person, she said in a phone interview, and she really doesn’t like being in the spotlight. To ease Meador’s mind about being maid of honor, her sister, Deanna Adams, told Meador she could wear whatever she wanted. “I already felt like everyone was going to watch me,” Meador said, so she might as well have fun with it. Leading up to the wedding, Meador and Adams would trade jokey texts about what she might wear: lederhosen or a steampunk outfit?

Adams said OK to the dinosaur, but Meador kept checking with the bride and groom, giving them the chance to veto her outfit. They never revoked their blessing. Just in case, Meador had a backup: Under her T. rex costume, she wore a $20 gray dress from Ann Taylor Loft, purchased at a consignment shop near the wedding venue. After the ceremony, she shed her prehistoric skin “because it was really hot,” Meador said. It was also a bit unwieldy for dancing: “If I moved, I was afraid I was going to knock someone with the tail.” Much cheaper than the standard wedding dress and not requiring alterations, the dinosaur was purchased for $65 on

Amazon, Meador said. “We’re not all about spending a lot of money on stuff,” Meador said of her family. “It’s just a day. It’s the marriage that counts.” Other members of the bridal party wore Converse sneakers and flip-flops. After Meador posted a photo of the wedding ceremony on Facebook, the image went viral

— getting thousands of likes, comments and shares. Jezebel declared her “the Best Person in America.” And of course, some of the comments were mean. People accused her of showboating, but others defended her. Adams also shared an image of the wedding party on Facebook, too, including an image of texts in

which she approved the T. rex costume. “I wasn’t trying to steal my sister’s spotlight,” Meador said over the phone, adding that Adams looked so beautiful, “not even a giant inflatable dinosaur could distract from that.” After the big day, Meador gave Adams the costume as a wedding gift.

Self-employed and trying to get a mortgage? By Michele Lerner The Washington Post An estimated onethird of all employees in the United States work part-time or full-time as freelancers or contract workers, according to Gallup. Self-employment can be alluring for many reasons, but it can make borrowing money to buy a home more complicated. Individuals who have been self-employed for

at least two years and can provide tax returns that show steady or increasing income that is sufficient to repay the loan should be able to qualify. One problem is that tax returns don’t always show the full income of someone who is self-employed because of their business deductions. We asked Raymond Eshaghian, founder and president of Greenbox Loans in Los Angeles, to discuss an alternative mortgage option for self-employed borrowers. “Some lenders have stepped up with mortgage options for the self-employed,” Eshaghian said in an email. “My company offers bank statement loans that are specifically for self-employed borrowers. Unfortunately, there are many self-employed workers that are currently

renting and they’re not aware that these loan programs exist, so they don’t think they can buy a home” Eshaghian said that self-employed borrowers using bank statements need to provide 12 to 24 months of bank statements and/or a profit and loss statement to show that they have the income to afford the mortgage payments on the home they want to purchase. To qualify, those borrowers need to have been self-employed for a minimum of two years, even on the 12-month bank statement program. “We do not look at tax returns at all for our bank statement loan programs,” he wrote. “In fact, if a loan comes in with tax returns, we have to use the income on the tax returns and can no longer provide a bank statement loan. The income often reported by self-employed people on their tax returns is less than their true earnings because they are allowed to take advantage of tax deductions

for the self-employed, which reduces their taxable income. That is why they are usually better off with a bank statement loan.” Self-employed borrowers with a FICO credit score as low as 580 may qualify for a loan with a 20 percent down payment if they can provide 24 months of bank statements proving they can afford the loan payments with Greenbox Loans. Borrowers with a FICO score of 720 or above may qualify for a mortgage with a 10 percent down payment and a typically lower interest rate. Eshaghian has several recommendations for self-employed home buyers: “They need to make sure they do not have an excessive number of ‘non-sufficient funds’ or overdrafts on their bank statements,” he wrote. ”If you have too many of either, it shows a lack of financial management and lenders have limited tolerance for that. It undercuts the whole concept of using bank statements to determine income. I also advise people to get organized and make sure they have all their documents, including bank statements, in order.” The bottom line: If you’re self-employed, consult a lender to discuss your specific circumstances and find out what type of loan options are available.

How to choose the right sofa for your home By Michele Lerner The Washington Post New renters and new homeowners are often on a tight budget, and yet they want to outfit their home with furniture that works for their surroundings. If you have limited dollars to spend, interior designers recommend focusing on a big-ticket item, such as investing in a good sofa that will last for the longterm. We asked Cheryl Eisen, founder and president of Interior Marketing Group in New York City, to share her advice about which factors are important when choosing a sofa to fit any budget. Here are her recommendations: Shape: modular sofas, because they work in so many different layouts. They allow you to swap pieces and adjust the shape if you move to a new home or get tired of it. If you’re going to invest in a piece, you want something that is adaptable for different spaces and uses. Size: The size should be consistent with the size and layout of your space. That’s another reason modular pieces are a great investment, because the size and configuration can be easily tailored to suit your space. Design/Construction: Other important considerations

include construction and design. You want to choose a piece that’s timeless. This means clean lines, neutral colors, high quality and durable construction. Choose a piece that is simple yet classic, nothing too trendy or bold. Over time, you may outgrow anything too taste-specific. Quality: Durability is essential, as well. A high-quality piece will stand the test of time and offer the comfort that will make it a worthy investment. Don’t compromise quality for a piece that looks great but is of poor quality. Where to shop: Don’t purchase a sofa online unless you are able to view it in a showroom prior to purchasing it. You want to be able to test the look and feel to ensure you’re getting the quality you’re looking for. The only way to know how comfortable a sofa will be is to test it out for yourself! Custom design: Custom design is necessary only if you have a very specific style in mind or an unusual room layout that doesn’t allow for a typical shape or size of most sofas. Making a good investment: Make sure you consider factors such as moving plans in the next few years and what the space and size of your new space might be.

Book exposes healthcare costs Getting a college sports scholarship is a long shot By Marty Makary The Washington Post

By Fred Bowen The Washington Post The college football season has started, so college sports are all over television and in the media. Lots of kids (and their parents) dream of getting a scholarship to play sports in college. These dreams of receiving scholarship money often drive kids to specialize in one sport or to play on expensive travel teams or attend expensive sports camps. But how realistic is it for any young athlete to think they will receive a scholarship to play a sport in college? The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) keeps statistics on the estimated percentage of high school athletes who go on to play in college. So let’s take a look. Those numbers make things look pretty tough for kids who want to earn a scholarship to play sports in college. (The numbers are not much better and often worse for “smaller” sports.) But several facts about college athletic scholarships make it even tougher. First, smaller colleges, called Division III schools, do not give athletic scholarships. Most college athletes play at these schools. So the chances of receiving an athletic scholarship are actually much lower than the percentages listed above.

For example, the percentage of high school athletes who receive a scholarship for men’s college basketball is less than 2 percent and for women’s basketball is less than 2.5 percent. In addition, NCAA rules limit the number of scholarships a school can give out in any sport. So not everyone on a college team gets a full scholarship. Most athletes in most sports receive only partial scholarships. For example, the NCAA allows a Division I baseball team to issue only 11.7 scholarships for its roster. There are usually about 32 players on a team. That means the players have to split the scholarships, and many players do not receive any scholarship money. It’s the same with sports such as soccer, lacrosse, and track and field. It has been estimated that slightly more than half of the Division I and Division II athletes receive any scholarship money. So what’s a kid to do? Stop dreaming and stop playing? No, but maybe you should take a more realistic approach to sports. Play to have fun, make friends and to learn to try your hardest no matter what the score is. But don’t count on an athletic scholarship to college. The numbers show that’s a long shot.

“The Price We Pay,” his new book, is stuffed with examples of predatory billing, confusing costs and statistics that could make you despondent. But there’s plenty of honesty, problem-solving and hope to leaven all that despair. Makary paints a grim portrait of American health care, from companies that won’t reveal how much their services cost to unnecessary medical procedures, unneeded diagnoses and medications that shouldn’t be prescribed. He asks how the industry lost sight of its “sacred mission:” caring for people who need help. Then he lays out a potential solution: honesty. Organizations that insist on transparency and measure performance can lead the way to a revi-

For many Americans, questions about the cost of health care in the United States start when they open their mail to see an unexpected bill or pick up their phone to answer a call from a medical debt collector. Medical debt is all too common: According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, 1 in 5 working-age Americans with health insurance has had problems paying medical bills within the past year, and the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau finds that nearly 1 in 5 credit reports include medical collections. Behind those debts, suggests Marty Makary, a Johns Hopkins surgeon and health policy commentator, is a broken system that can be fixed.

talized, more common-sense system, he suggests. “People blame doctors, hospitals, payers, pharma, device companies, and even patients for not taking better care,” Makary writes. “But every one of us in health care, every stakeholder, needs to look inward and address the waste in our own backyard.” Though Makary’s calls for more market “disruption” feel familiar, his argument for a return to medicine’s mission is fresh indeed. Individuals must demand transparent pricing; physicians and hospitals must promise to avoid unnecessary procedures. But if everyone recommits and pitches in, he suggests, there might just be a way to stop the medical madness.

What wild animals really like to eat By Jason Bittel The Washington Post

001484215r2

Everybody knows that bunnies eat carrots, right? Except they don’t, really. In the wild, rabbits aren’t in the habit of digging up root vegetables such as carrots, potatoes and beets. They much prefer wild greens, such as grasses and clover. In fact, carrots may actually be bad for rabbits, because although the vegetables are high in good nutrients, including beta carotene, they are also relatively high in sugar. This means that feeding a rabbit lots of carrots could lead to tooth decay or other health issues. But this is just one common myth about the diets of wild animals. Here’s another: Bears are bloodthirsty predators that regularly stalk and kill prey.

In reality, nothing could be further from the truth. “While we do see bears feeding on elk and bison and things like that, most of those animals actually just didn’t survive the winter, or they were wolf kills,” said Danielle Rivet, a wildlife biologist at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. Rivet says black bears and brown bears in the United States and Canada have diets that are made up of about 80 percent plants. This can include dandelions and grasses, as well as blueberries, strawberries and huckleberries, depending on what’s in season. Grizzlies, which are a type of brown bear, also like to spend their days turning over rocks in search of army cutworm moths. In other areas, such as Yellowstone National Park, the

bears may sniff around for a red squirrel’s secret stash of pine nuts. “So the bears aren’t actually just going around and murdering things all the time,” said Rivet. “They’ll eat anything. Mosses, fungus, they’ll eat mushrooms. Bears aren’t picky.” Many people know that the bears of Alaska get a lot of calories each year from salmon. But did you know bruins also enjoy other types of seafood? “These bears will actually go out into the tidal plains when the tide is out, and they’ll dig up clams,” said Rivet. “Loads of clams. Loads of moths. They have to eat tons and tons of these things to actually gain enough weight to get ready for winter.” Aside from bears and rabbits, plenty of other

animals eat things we don’t typically associate with their kind. Squirrels, which, of course, love acorns and nuts, also create a sort of mushroom jerky by hanging fungi on tree branches so it can dry out. Pandas, which are infamous bamboo eaters, will nibble on rotting carcasses if they get the chance. Deer have been known to gobble up baby birds from time to time. And only half of all mosquitoes drink blood. (It’s the females - they need the protein so they can produce eggs.) Scientists have even discovered that the bonnethead shark, a type of hammerhead, gets some of its nutrients from eating sea grass. “Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”

Merriam-Webster toasts an expanding food and drink vocabulary By Tim Carman The Washington Post

A

“tallboy” — as a term used to describe oversize beer cans, not a chest of drawers — has been around since at least the mid-1950s, when the once-dominant Schlitz Brewing started selling 16-ouncers. More than 60 years later, the tallboy has finally earned its place in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a source that has been teaching people about the English language since

1847. “Tallboy” was one of more than 530 new words and definitions added to the Merriam-Webster website, the online resource that’s accessed tens of millions of times each month. “A long time coming, right?” says Emily Brewster, the all-tooappropriately named senior editor for MerriamWebster. The delayed recognition for “tallboy” among lexicographers is not unusual, Brewster says.

The dictionary does not attempt to be a leading predictor of language, she adds, but more a reflection of words that have become “established members of the language.” Each word must satisfy a few basic criteria before it can be considered for inclusion in Merriam-Webster: There must be “substantial evidence” of the word in current use, with a generally set definition, and the word must be found in a variety of publications over an extended period of time,

Brewster says. The criteria, she emphasizes, are “as intentionally vague as they sound.” So while the term “tallboy” has been part of the brewing and bar industries for decades, it has only recently started to appear in mainstream publications on a consistent basis, probably because craft breweries have embraced oversize cans as a way to compete with the global breweries that hog all the shelves in

7-Eleven coolers. (These days, the term “tallboy” can be applied to even bigger-format containers, including 19.2-ounce cans that hold roughly the same amount of suds as an imperial pint.) About 20 staffers at Merriam-Webster are devoted to seeking out new or revised dictionary entries. Any one of those employees can propose a new word or phrase, such as “deep state” (“an alleged

secret network of especially nonelected government officials and sometimes private entities… operating extralegally to influence and enact government policy”), or expand the definition of a current entry, such as “inclusive” (“allowing and accommodating people who have historically been excluded”). Their proposals will then be

reviewed by other editors, who assess the merits of the words or definitions. Stephen Perrault, director of defining at Merriam-Webster, makes the final call, Brewster says. It’s a pretty long and involved process,” she adds. (Brewster, incidentally, can take credit for both “deep state” and “inclusive,” though editors tend to refrain from such selfaggrandizement.) That long and involved process has added a

number of other food and drink terms to the dictionary. They include “matcha” (“green powder made from ground green tea leaves that is used to make tea and other beverages”), “Halloumi” (“a white, brine-cured Cypriot cheese made usually from a mixture of sheep’s and goat’s milk”) and “chana” (the Hindi word for “chickpea”). These newbies are in addition to other recent entries — “bhut jolokia” (otherwise known as the “ghost pepper”), “dulce

de leche” (“sweetened caramelized milk”), “mofongo” (“a Puerto Rican dish consisting of fried green plantains mashed with garlic, salt, and olive oil”) — that continue to expand the vocabulary around food in the United States. “We’re in a golden age” of food and drink, Brewster says. “People are really expanding their food interests into unfamiliar territories.|And the dictionary, she says, is merely reflecting those ever-widening interests.

“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”

Capital icon is ready to shine again By Michael S. Rosenwald The Washington Post WASHINGTON — David Rubenstein, one of Washington’s richest men, has lately been in the business of protecting and restoring many of the country’s historical treasures. He’s pumped millions of his billions into the Lincoln Memorial, the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial and Arlington House, which was the home of Robert E. Lee. Rubenstein even bought — for $21.3 million — a copy of the Magna Carta, which is on loan to the National Archives. But compared to the plaudits he’s received for those efforts, Rubenstein says nothing comes close to the thanks he’s received for the more than $10 million he has spent helping restore the Washington Monument. “It’s really an iconic building and probably the most recognizable building in the United States,” Rubenstein said Tuesday morning on the monument’s observation deck. “It”s a statement of American strength.”

The 555-foot marble and granite landmark reopens to the public Thursday after years of repairs stemming from a 2011 earthquake. First lady Melania Trump is expected to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony and visit the observation deck. Rubenstein, who made his fortune in private equity at the Carlyle Group, initially donated $7.5 million to repair structural damage to the monument. After it reopened in 2014, the aging elevator repeatedly broke down, often stranding visitors. Following a second closure in 2016, Rubenstein kicked in an additional $3 million to modernize the elevator. Visiting the monument this week, Rubenstein recalled visiting as a child while growing up in a working-class neighborhood in Baltimore, where his dad was a mailman. “My parents brought me over here because the price was right,” Rubenstein said, meaning it was, like nearly all Washington’s other monuments and museums, free.

(Forbes Magazine says he’s now worth $3.2 billion, so presumably cost of admittance to any structure or event on Earth is not an issue.) It was damage to the monument that got Rubenstein interested in historical philanthropy. He asked officials at the National Park Service who would fix the monument and how much it would cost. Told that Congress would probably need to be involved, Rubenstein decided to put up the money himself so there wouldn’t be too much delay. “Then I realized there are other buildings that could probably use some money, so I began fixing up other things,” he said. Asked what the return on investment was for him, Rubenstein said “infinite.” But that’s obviously not in terms of cold, hard cash. “Thomas Jefferson said part of what we want to do is pursue happiness,” Rubenstein said. “So what produces the most happiness in the world?” Having happy and healthy children, he

said. Making your parents proud, he said. And this: “When you have your fellow citizens think you’re doing something useful, that’s probably pretty good. I get a lot of pleasure out of doing these things, and if I didn’t do them and I died with more money would I be a happier person? I don’t think so.” Rubenstein moseyed around the observation deck talking to report-

ers and looking out the windows, which frame some of the best views of Washington - the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, the White House. Then, dressed in a suit and tie, the 70-year-old billionaire prepared to climb a ladder up 19 feet to get a peek at the elevator’s new machinery. A National Park Service official offered some advice: Always have three points of contact on the ladder.

“I can do it,” Rubenstein said. And off he went. Descending the ladder a few minutes later, he said, “I don’t think Melania is going to climb up there.”
