products while continuing to sell combustible cigarettes is irresponsible,” Tony Abboud, executive director of the Vapor Technology Association, said in a statement. This is the second time this month Walmart has taken a stand on a hot-button issue. On Sept. 3, the retailer said it would stop selling ammunition for military-style weapons and would no longer allow customers to openly carry firearms in stores. A number of major chains, including Kroger and Walgreens, followed with similar announcements. Retail experts say they’re expecting a similar domino effect this time around. Walmart, which has $514 billion in annual sales, is often a bellwether for the industry. “The vaping crisis

has become so significant that Walmart is stepping out to take a stand,” said Wendy Patrick, a lecturer on business ethics at San Diego State University. “There is no doubt that other companies are watching closely.” Earlier on Friday, U.S. senators including Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) urged the Food and Drug Administration to “immediately remove” all cartridge-based e-cigarettes from the market. “Make no mistake: none of the e-cigarettes, including cartridge based e-cigarettes, currently on the market have gone through the FDA approval process,” they wrote in a letter to federal regulators. “They are hooking our children on nicotine at alarming rates.”

ity among teenagers. After years of steady decline, the number of middle and high school students using tobacco products increased between 2017 and 2018, largely because of the growing popularity of e-cigarettes. More than 20 percent of high school students said they used e-cigarettes last year, up from 12 percent the year before, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The e-cigarette industry was quick to strike back against Walmart’s decision. The largest players in the market include Juul Labs, a San Francisco-based company that sold more than $1 billion worth of vaping products last year, and R.J. Walmart will stop selling e-cigarettes at its U.S. stores, the company said recently, as vaping-related deaths and illnesses are rising across the country. The retailer attributed its decision to “growing federal, state and local regulatory complexity and uncertainty regarding e-cigarettes” and said it would sell through its existing inventory before exiting the market altogether. Walmart, which has 5,000 U.S. locations, is the country’s largest retailer. The company will also stop selling all related devices and accessories, including cartridges and pods. A Walmart spokeswoman said vaping products were a “relatively small category overall” for the company, and that it expects to sell

through related merchandise in the next few months. The announcement comes months after Walmart phased out the sale of fruit- and dessert-flavored e-cigarettes at its stores and raised the minimum age for tobacco purchases to 21. At least eight people have died so far from vaping-related illnesses in the United States, and health officials say they believe there have been more than 500 reports of lung illnesses related to e-cigarette use. The Trump administration said last week that it plans to ban nearly all flavored vaping products on the market. E-cigarettes have ballooned into a multibillion-dollar industry. The products, which are typically marketed as a way to quit smoking traditional cigarettes, have gained popular-

Scientists in Antarctica train to endure environment By Joy Lanzendorfer The Washington Post

001484215r2

As the United States enters its coldest season, Antarctica’s summer gets into full swing. By November, the sun shines on the ice-covered continent day and night. When it sets in mid-February, Antarctica enters winter, where it’s dark for six months. Because of

this, summer is Antarctica’s busiest period, with thousands of researchers studying this last pristine place on Earth. Thanks to the Antarctic Treaty, created in 1961, more than 50 countries have agreed to preserve Antarctica for scientific pursuits, exploration and other peaceful purposes. No

one owns it, and no one can live there permanently. Scientists who visit cover many disciplines. A biologist might be observing penguins the same day an astronomer looks through the South Pole Telescope. A volcanologist might be exploring an active volcano while a paleoclimatologist drills into ancient ice cores. There’s even a residency for artists and writers who are inspired by Antarctica. But even in summer, Antarctica is a dangerous place. It’s the coldest environment on Earth, with a mean temperature of minus-76 in winter and minus-18 in summer, according to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The surface has so much ice that entire mountains are buried underneath it. It’s also the driest place

on Earth, with extreme winds. Everyone who visits must undergo safety training to learn about dangers such as frostbite, hypothermia and snow blindness. Obeying safety rules is essential for survival. “The point of the safety training is that Antarctica can be incredibly hostile,” says Peter West of the National Science Foundation. “It can change from a relatively benign situation to that very hostile situation unbelievably quickly.” Additional training may also be required. Michael Gooseff, a University of Colorado professor who studies how ecosystems respond to climate change, regularly goes inland to the dry valleys. He has to take courses on how to camp in the ice, interact with helicopters, use the radio and rescue

someone from a crevasse, a crack in the ice that can be hundreds of feet deep. In 13 years, Gooseff has never experienced an accident, which he attributes to training and thinking ahead. “We spend a lot of time talking about risk and the potential consequences,” he says. “That mind-set really does help all of us to think about what we do before we do it.” There are also rules to keep Antarctica pristine. Nothing can be removed as a souvenir, and everyone has to properly dispose of their trash, down to ash from fires. People aren’t allowed to approach wildlife, which include seals and penguins. The rule of thumb is that if the animal is reacting to you, you’re too close. Sometimes this can lead to strange occurrences. Anna Bergstrom, a hydrologist at the University of Colorado who studies how dust enhances melt on glaciers, occasionally sees seals and penguins wandering through

the valleys, miles from shore. “We’re obviously, due to the treaty, not able to turn the penguin around and send it in the right direction,” she says. “We just have to watch it, which is really sad.” Bergstrom frequently sees mummified seals in the valleys, as the cold, dry atmosphere preserves their bodies. Carbon dating reveals that some of the mummies are thousands of years old. “They’re all over the place, too,” Bergstrom says. “They’re up on the glaciers, and we don’t know how they got up there or why they got up there.” It’s one of many mysteries scientists still have to solve about Antarctica. With climate change melting the ice, their work is more important than ever. Increasingly, what happens in Antarctica affects the rest of the world. “It’s this gigantic landscape that’s hostile to us, in the sense of being cold and windy all the time,” Gooseff says. “Despite that, there are these beautiful hidden treasures to try to find in the form of scientific discovery”

Big Coffee lures millennials with technology By Isis Almeida The Washington Post Sustainability-minded millennials are increasingly demanding to know where their morning cup of joe comes from, and some of the world’s top coffee companies are turning to technology for help. Roasters including J.M. Smucker Co. and Jacob Douwe Egberts are joining a blockchain initiative by Farmer Connect, a startup backed by Swiss coffee trader Sucafina and developed in partnership with International Business Machines Corp. The technology will help firms trace the origin of the beans they buy and sell as well as their pricing along the supply chain. The digital ledger system, which usually

tracks transactions, will also be used to feed customers detailed information about where the coffee was farmed, milled, exported, imported and roasted through a consumer-facing application called Thank My Farmer. Ethical clientele will also be able to directly support sustainability projects, and from next year, make direct payments to farmers. “Our participation in the Farmer Connect blockchain initiative demonstrates our commitment to providing consumers with the transparency they crave while also creating new ways to support smallholder coffee farmers,” said Joe Stanziano, senior vice president and general manager for Smucker, owner of coffee

brands including Folgers, Cafe Bustelo and 1850. The platform, now available to members, will open up for the rest of the market next year, said Dave Behrends, founder and president of Farmer Connect and a partner at Sucafina. The startup plans to raise around $10 million to $20 million at the end of this year or early 2020, making it an industry-wide initiative, he said. Farmer Connect doesn’t own the data companies input, so when it comes to price, — a sensitive topic for many companies — it will be the users’ decision to give others permission to see the value of their purchases and sales. Behrends expects 90% of the users to disclose where the coffee

ColleCtible, Personal ProPerty, PiCkuP AUCTION

comes from, but only about 10% to embrace price transparency at the start. Coffee traders have struggled with thin margins and increasingly long payment terms by an ever consolidating roasting industry, meaning some traders may chose not to open up their pricing information. While some roasters require proof traders have paid farmers a fair price, the groups that do so successfully are the ones that allow for margins in the supply chain, Behrends said. “I think traders are fine sharing data that ensures farmers have been paid a fair price,” he said. “The fear that they have is that

roasters use that to beat them down and completely cut their margin down to zero.” Tapping blockchain will help cut transaction costs, but sharing the data with financing banks could also help companies to achieve lower rates, Behrands said. And farmers gain too. Growers will get their own app to receive direct payments, input sales and prices as well as data about themselves. The app, set to be ready in the first quarter next year, will also let farmers to verify if the price companies input is correct. “That’s great for two reasons: Now we have verified data of how

much is going to farmers, it’s not just a trader claiming that they paid the farmer a fair price,” Behrends said. “And for the farmer confirming that, they are building credit history because they are building a digital track-record of production and income and for a lot of the farmers in Africa, that history makes them bankable and open for micro-credit loans for the first time ever.” Farmer Connect, also supported by the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation and Itochu Corp. among others, is open to later expanding to other commodities such as cocoa and tea.

Atlas the humanoid robot does gymnastics By Peter Holley The Washington Post The internet gawks each time Boston Dynamics releases a video showing its eye-catching humanoid robot, Atlas, performing newly acquired acrobatic tricks. But until now, most of the machine’s maneuvering has remained well within the realm of average human athleticism. Not anymore. If the tech company’s recently uploaded video is any indication, Atlas has, in a matter of months, graduated from middle-school gym class

to something approaching a professional athlete. In the 38-second video, the sturdy, battery-powered machine — standing 4 foot 9 inches and weighing 176 pounds — unleashes an exceedingly nimble routine (using its legs, arms and torso) with a degree of gracefulness that you’d expect from a human with years of training. “We created the maneuvers using new techniques that streamline the development process,” Boston Dynamics wrote in the video’s description. “First, an optimization

algorithm transforms high-level descriptions of each maneuver into dynamically-feasible reference motions. Then Atlas tracks the motions using a model predictive controller that smoothly blends from one maneuver to the next.” Despite that smoothness, the robot isn’t perfect, according to its handlers. “Using this approach, we developed the routine significantly faster than previous Atlas routines, with a performance success rate of about 80 percent,” the description adds. Within hours of being

posted online, the latest Atlas video had racked up nearly 1.5 million views and thousands of comments, many of them suggesting the robot’s newfound athleticism was evidence that mankind’s reign over machines is nearing its expiration date. “Absolutely amazing!” one commenter wrote. “I can smell the future where robots are roaming in the streets with us!” In recent years, Boston Dynamics has become known for two things: creating robots whose movements mimic humans and animals with a degree of accuracy that many find surprising, if not unnerving. And then, without

warning, posting cryptic videos of those robots online, where they quickly go viral, capturing some mixture of excitement and terror about the rapid rise of autonomous machines. Boston Dynamics was purchased by Japan’s Softbank from Alphabet in 2017. In recent years, it has produced fourlegged robots — with names like Spot, Wildcat and BigDog — that can open doors, carry heavy loads and run nearly 20 mph, but its most recognizable product appears to be Atlas, the humanoid athlete that Boston Dynamics labels, “the world’s most dynamic humanoid robot.” As recently as three years ago, Atlas was

recorded awkwardly tramping through the snow at a slow speed, its mechanical body lacking any of the agility that it displays now. Curiosity about Atlas gained momentum last year when Boston Dynamics posted a 34-second clip on YouTube showing the formerly halting robot going for a casual and smooth-looking jog in a grassy residential area. The video seemed to catch many viewers by surprise, including the Daily Mail, which covered Atlas’s physical feat at the time. “If you thought you’d be able to run away from the terrifying new breed of robots,” the paper wrote, “bad news.”

“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”

New survey out about American breakfasts By Tim Carman The Washington Post Americans prefer their coffee with milk. They like their bacon somewhat or very crispy. They like their bread lightly toasted, and they like their eggs scrambled or over easy. These are the results of a new YouGov survey that asked 1,295 U.S. adults how they prefer their breakfast foods. Our preferences are less surprising, perhaps, than the foods that were included in the survey, a combo plate of bacon, eggs and toast that makes it look like America eats as if it were 1929, not 2019. Where’s the avocado toast? Where’s the heaping bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch? Where’s the cold slice of pizza? Where’s the Sausage, Egg and Cheese Blueberry McGriddles? For that matter, who

has time for breakfast anymore? A recent poll showed that the typical American eats breakfast only three times a week, while 13% rarely eat in the morning at all. Where’s the YouGov breakfast survey that says 20% of Americans like their morning coffee extra quiet, because they’re hung over? I asked the friendly folks at YouGov why the survey was limited to bacon, eggs, toast and coffee. I was told, basically, that each food had to accommodate a range of potential answers. So when participants were asked about bacon, for example, they could select one of five responses that ranged from “very chewy” to “burnt.” Or when asked about coffee, they could select one of four answers that ranged from “black” to “with a lot of milk,

almost white.” (There was no option, alas, for butter in your coffee.) “One could say why not include pancakes?” wrote YouGov public relations manager Jennifer Abreu in an email. “But there is no scale on pancakes from well done to not.” Abreu said the breakfast survey is actually part of a larger one on food. Last month, for instance, YouGov released the results of a steaks-and-hamburgers survey. When Americans were shown images of steak, from blue rare to well-done, their preferences proved just how divided this country is: 24% said they like their meat well-done, and 23% said they like it medium-rare. As if to confuse the issue even more, Democrats were 6 percentage points more likely to order a

well-done steak than their Republican counterparts. This may be the only thing Democrats have in common with President Donald Trump. It’s hard to know what conclusions to draw from the YouGov breakfast survey, other than Americans still insist on drowning their coffee in milk, which only makes sense, to my mind, if you’re knocking back blackened sludge brewed from dark-roasted beans. I guess it’s interesting that 1% of the population can’t eat bacon or toast without incinerating it first. They must like ashes for breakfast. But mostly, I find the survey interesting for the featured breakfast itself: the kind of hearty diner meal that was foisted on America in the 1920s when Edward Bernays, that master of

of them stated that bacon and eggs should be embodied with the breakfast and, as a result, the sale of bacon went up.” Bernays, it should be noted, was the puppet master behind a massive public relations campaign — others would call it political propaganda — for United Fruits, an effort that would help topple the government in Guatemala in the 1950s. It would seem that, nearly a century after Bernays changed how we ate the first meal of the day, we still view the classic American breakfast as a plate of bacon, eggs, toast and coffee.

propaganda and public relations, convinced the public that no breakfast plate was complete without a few strips of bacon (no matter how crispy they were). Would it surprise you to learn that Bernays was, at the time, working for the Beech-Nut Packing Co., which was trying to sell more bacon? “We carried out a letter to 5,000 physicians,” Bernays said in an old, undated interview. “We got about 4,500 answers. All of them concurred that a heavy breakfast was better for the health of the American people than a light breakfast. That was publicized in the newspapers. Many

What causes curled shingles? No homeowner wants to look at the exterior of his or her home and see roof damage. Such damage may lead homeowners to think they need a new roof, a potentially costly expense that can quickly throw household budgets into a state of disarray. According to the HomeAdvisor, the average homeowner spends a little more than $7,600 installing a new roof. Various factors, including the size of a home and the type of roof homeowners prefer, will affect the cost of a roof replacement. In addition, homeowners who see roof damage can rest assured that not all roof problems will necessarily require a replacement roof to be installed. Curled shingles are a problem many homeowners have encountered. This

particular problem is not always indicative that a roof is on its way out. In fact, the home improvement resource This Old House notes that, as asphalt shingles age, their corners often begin to curl downward or upward. Homeowners who notice this early enough can glue down the curled section of each shingle that’s beginning to curl. Some shingles may be curling because they’re defective. Fortified Roofing, a New Jersey-based roofing company that specializes in the repairing and replacing of various roofing configurations, advises homeowners to contact a local roofing professional to diagnose the cause of the curling. Doing so quickly can prevent curled shingles from contributing to more widespread damage.

Moisture and poor ventilation may be contributing to curled shingles as well. Homeowners with attics in their home may see curled shingles on their roofs because moisture is building up in their poorly ventilated attics. In addition to causing damage such as curled shingles, a poorly ventilated attic allows moisture to build up, potentially contributing to mold growth. Mold presents a host of additional problems, including some that can adversely affect the health of a home’s inhabitants. Improper roof installation also may be the culprit behind curled shingles. When a roof is not installed correctly, shingles may not be aligned or nailed down in the right way. This might be what’s causing shingles to curl on recently installed roofs.

Curled shingles are unsightly and can pose a significant threat to a home if not addressed promptly. Homeowners can protect themselves and their roofs by working with skilled roofing professionals, who can diagnose issues like curled shingles and offer the right solutions.
