‘Alcoholic Tide Pods’: The newest way to drink whisky By Teo Armus The Washington Post They’re wrapped in seaweed. They’re filled with whisky. And they’re now drawing a collective groan from the internet, thanks to their suspicious resemblance to a laundry detergent pack-turned-memeturned-public health hazard. That’s right: They’re alcoholic Tide Pods. Well, sort of. In what is either a highly successful marketing scheme or an inadvertent attempt to launch itself into millennial relevancy, a 195-year-old single-malt Scotch whisky distillery has rolled out three kinds of limited-edition “glassless cocktails,” available through Sunday at a posh London bar. These alcoholic amuse-bouche pouches provide “the perfect flavour-explosion experience,” The Glenlivet claims. But as hundreds of baffled commenters online immediately wanted to know: How do you “drink” them? “Enjoying them is

simple,” said the distillery in a 53-second video last week. “The capsules are popped in the mouth for an instant burst of flavour.” Then, “the capsule is simply swallowed.” “Surely this is a sick joke,” said Julia Macfarlane, a foreign affairs reporter with ABC News, asking the Scottish prime minister to intervene. “This is an abomination. What is going on. Somebody do something.” “Oh dear lord no,” wrote the Scottish actor Sam Heughan, who has announced plans to launch his own (non-capsuled) line of whisky. While the pods might seem a departure for an august Scotch producer, Miriam Eceolaza, the distillery’s director, argued that they actually honor the legacy of The Glenlivet’s founder, George Smith. While illicitly operating the distillery in the 1840s and arming himself with pistols to protect the business from political blowback, Smith

“always went against the grain, bucking tradition and doing things differently,” Eceolaza said in an announcement. The distillery’s latest creation is certainly a different approach to a drink that is meant to be sipped. And in so doing, it has, either intentionally or inadvertently, fashioned a corporate, adult and European revival of an adolescent, American, homegrown meme — one that few seemed to have wanted a reminder of. But in case you need a refresher anyway: Around January 2018, the Internet lit aflame in its crazed obsession over Tide Pods, as a handful of teens were hospitalized, government officials offered warnings and tech giants took swift action. The culprit? YouTube videos of adolescents biting into the colorful packs of plastic-wrapped laundry detergent. Now, The Glenlivet wants adult patrons to sink their teeth into seaweed-wrapped whisky pods contain-

ing one of three cocktails: a zesty citrus mix (which includes bergamot, sherry and lemon), spice (verjus and two kinds of bitters) and a flavor known only as “wood” (containing vermouth and, aptly, notes of sandalwood and cedarwood). All three concoctions were created by the Czech bartender Alex Kratena for London Cocktail Week, the city’s annual celebration of alcohol innovation, exclusively available through Oct. 13 for patrons of his Tayēr + Elementary bar, on the city’s bustling Old Street. Kratena said his bar and The Glenlivet had teamed up with Notpla, a start-up that

focuses on putting together alternative and sustainable packages. “It was very much an exploration of the flavor pillars that are in the Glenlivet. For me, there’s so much more which makes the liquid complex,” he told The Washington Post. “When you insert them in your mouth and gently press them against your palate, you get all the flavors.” Kratena said that any similarity to Tide Pods, or the meme they starred in, is purely coincidental. He did not intend to find a new way to sneak alcohol into all sorts of situations where a handle or even a flask might be too obvious, as some

have suggested. He suggested that the packaging — a thin, seemingly invisible layer of seaweed that holds up to 23 milliliters of whisky cocktail — is a call for more sustainable consumption of liquor. The seaweed used for the capsule has also been used by Notpla to create water capsules, a handy pouch of liquid for runners in the London Marathon. Besides working to de-acifidy the oceans, that seaweed is also biodegradable. Most people seemed like they weren’t having it. “Just put it in an IV bag,” wrote the author Roxane Gay. “Let’s get to the inevitable conclusion.”

Facebook owns Instagram and WhatsApp, among other digital basics By · Marie C. Fred Turner, a communications professor at Stanford University, said the country’s technological literacy has struggled to keep pace with the speed with which digital tools have grown increasingly complex and opaque. “What you see is not at all what you get,” he said, calling for better digital education. Users are grappling with these issues as social media giants have been rocked by privacy scandals. Apple redesigns world’s best-selling headphones with new Beats By Vlad Savov The Washington Post The world’s most popular headphones are getting an overdue refresh. Apple on Tuesday took the wraps off the Beats Solo Pro, the first major redesign of the on-ear pair since Apple acquired Beats Electronics back in 2014. Based on our first try of the Pro variant, the wait was worth it. “Not one electrical or mechanical component in these headphones exists in prior Beats headphones,” Luke Wood, president of Beats, said at a press briefing in Tokyo. The Solo Pro took more than three years of development but Wood said that the end result represents “dream headphones” for all the engineers who worked on it. Unconstrained by the limits of smaller manufacturers, Beats leveraged Apple’s scale to get primacy among suppliers, devised entire-

ly new custom-made transducers just for the Solo Pro, and harnessed the talents of the same engineering teams that worked on the iPhone 11 Pro. The side arms of the Solo Pro are now made of anodized aluminum, adding a hitherto absent touch of premium allure, sturdiness and a more consistent clamping force on the user’s head. This new pair of headphones is still not the most accommodating for people with larger skulls, but comfort is improved relative to its predecessor, the Beats Solo 3. That’s in large part down to the overhauled cushions: they no longer have an inner seam that can touch the ear, their surface area has been increased by 70% and they have 35% greater volume, offering more padding. Active noise canceling makes its debut on the Solo line with this model, and it works

extremely well. “The ANC world is really big,” said Wood. These new headphones expand it further by “taking ANC to a whole other customer.” A feature that was once narrowly designed to appeal to long-haul air travelers is now becoming mainstream, and Apple’s embrace of it with the Solo Pro is an acknowledgment and accelerant of that trend. One thing that will make the Solo Pro less appealing to frequent flyers, however, is the complete absence of an analog connector — users will have to connect wirelessly over Bluetooth or purchase an accessory, as there’s no option to connect these with a classic 3.5mm plug. Among the subtle but important changes Apple has made in this upgrade is a general redesign to reduce water ingress. Sport is the second most popular use case for the Beats Solo, so Apple

made sure to make its latest iteration resistant to sweat and splashes with new gaskets and coverings to protect the precious electronics within. They’re still not waterproof headphones, but they’re much more durable, to go with their nicer feel from the improved cushions and metal frame. The Beats Solo Pro still collapse down as before, however now their opening and closing serves as the on-off switch as well. There’s just one button to switch between active noise canceling, no noise canceling, and the transparency mode that lets you hear your

surroundings, and the classic music and volume controls are still present as clicky buttons on the right ear cup. Apple has rightly resisted the temptation of building in fiddly touch controls. Featuring Apple’s excellent H1 wireless chip, a whole new circuit board design and a bespoke digital-to-analog converter, these are the most intricately designed and engineered headphones from either brand. Wood proudly described the Solo Pro as “extremely proprietary,” though it’s a little disappointing that Apple is sticking with a Lightning con-

nector for charging instead of USB-C, which it uses on its iPad Pro and MacBook Pro devices. Away from a charger, the Solo Pro will last 22 hours with ANC turned on or 40 hours without it. The Beats Solo Pro go on sale Oct. 30 for $299, and the Beats Solo 3 will remain in Apple’s lineup for now at a reduced price of $199. A collaboration with superstar producer Pharrell Williams will see three limited-time colorways — a dark navy, a turquoise and a summery mix of orange and red — go on sale alongside the default black, gray and white options.

“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”

Netflix results will test investors’ mettle By Kamaron Leach Bloomberg The stakes are often high when Netflix Inc. reports results: Stock swings of 10 percent or more aren’t uncommon. But with the shares down more than a fifth since the streaming giant disappointed investors in July, the risk of another plunge may be lower this time around. When Netflix posts results after markets close Wednesday, analysts expect an increase of about 800,000 U.S. subscribers for the third quarter and about 6 million internationally. Whether or not the company hits those targets may depend on how much Netflix’s new programming resonated with viewers. The timing of Netflix’s lat-

est shows probably helped subscriber growth, said Third Bridge’s Scott Kessler, who cited the new season of “Stranger Things” as a potential driver. Netflix also may have gotten a boost from a competitor’s show, HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” ending its run. Gerber Kawasaki Inc., a Netflix investor, also expects “a pop from the people moving from HBO and resubscribing,” thanks to “Stranger Things.” Still, Gerber investment adviser Nick Licouris said the firm has been reducing its position because of looming competition from Apple Inc., Walt Disney Co., AT&T Inc. and Comcast Corp. The Santa Monica, California-based wealth manager holds more

than 12,000 shares valued at almost $3.7 million, according to a June regulatory filing. Given that Netflix has been growing so much faster internationally, analysts will be eyeing the company’s progress — and spending — in key foreign markets. “We’re looking to see if there’s any meaningful traction with some of the lower-priced, mobile-only plans — with India primarily,” Andy Hargreaves, a KeyBanc Capital analyst, said in an interview. Netflix itself predicted in July it would add a total of 7 million subscribers in the third quarter — 800,000 in the U.S. and 6.2 million elsewhere. Many investors may still

be smarting from the company’s last quarterly report. Three months ago, Netflix posted disappointing second-quarter subscriber growth — and a rare drop in the U.S. The shares slumped 10 percent. “It would be hard for it to be worse” this time, Hargreaves said, though investor concerns will persist as new streaming services increase the risk of higher subscriber churn or marketing costs, according to a note. Rosenblatt Securities predicts the company’s fourth-quarter subscriber guidance will miss Wall Street’s consensus, according to a note from analyst Bernie McTernan. He

expects the forecast to “be treated with greater than normal skepticism” given that Netflix is reporting weeks before the launch of competing offerings, such as Disney+. “Netflix has never faced this level of competition from a new entrant,” he wrote. Gerber’s Licouris sees room for both Netflix and Disney, but warns that “at some point, it becomes extremely saturated.” On Tuesday, for example, the largest U.S. theater chain, AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc., announced a new service that would give U.S. subscribers online access to nearly 2,000 movies for rent or purchase.

Northern California blackouts may mean mobile outages

001484215r2

By Marie C. Baca The Washington Post SAN FRANCISCO — The place that helped make the Internet the center of our lives may have to live offline, at least temporarily. Nearly a million Northern Californians are enduring or preparing for unprecedented blackouts — and top U.S. mobile providers are scrambling to maintain service. AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile said the shutdowns could interrupt service and make it difficult or impossible to make calls, send texts or access the Internet.

Only Verizon expressed unwavering confidence about its service in the face of the blackouts. One of the largest utilities in the nation, Pacific Gas & Electric, began shutting off power Wednesday ahead of dry, windy conditions that increase the risk of dangerous wildfires. The blackout affected about 500,000 customers early Wednesday, with additional blackouts expected to affect about 300,000 others on Wednesday and Thursday. PG&E told customers that power could be out

Some people had lost cell coverage as of Wednesday evening, according to AT&T spokesman Jim Greer. T-Mobile also reported some outages. All the companies are encouraging customers to fully charge their devices before a scheduled outage, consider purchasing a charging device that doesn’t need to be plugged in, prepare an emergency kit and keep in touch with officials for updates. Backup equipment will be key to whether the connected Bay Area can get online during the blackout. AT&T’s Greer said the company is work-

ing as quickly as possible to deploy recovery and generators in areas where customers may be affected. He added, though, that network is performing well despite the outages. AT&T is offering unlimited talk, text and data to its customers in 758 California Zip codes between Thursday and Sunday. AT&T was informed of the power shutdowns in over 38 counties less than 36 hours in advance, and the information changed in the hours ahead of the blackouts, according to a person close to the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity. In a blog post on its website, Sprint said the blackouts could affect cell towers. Some of the sites have gener-

ators, and the company says it is deploying backup power as quickly as possible to the ones that don’t. T-Mobile said it has permanent generators in “key cell sites” and backup battery power elsewhere. Temporary generators can also be deployed if necessary. “We understand that service disruptions are an inconvenience to our customers and we appreciate their patience during this event,” T-Mobile said in a statement. Verizon spokeswoman Jeannine Brew Braggs said the company can serve customers “indefinitely” until commercial power is restored. She attributed that to the generators and backup batteries at the majority of its cell towers and other loca-

tions. Brew Braggs said the company can refuel the generators to keep them running. Officials determined earlier this year that PG&E equipment was responsible for the deadliest wildfire in California history, which killed 85 people, destroyed the town of Paradise and nearby areas and burned 150,000 acres. PG&E filed for bankruptcy in January in anticipation of $50 billion in liabilities stemming from the disaster. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that a barricade was set up in front of PG&E’s headquarters in the city in to protect employees from frustrated customers. PG&E did not respond to a request for comment.

Google unveils Wi-Fi routers with Assistant, louder Mini speaker By Mark Gurman Bloomberg Alphabet Inc.’s Google introduced an updated home speaker and Wi-Fi routers on Tuesday and put them under its Nest smarthome brand. At an event Tuesday in New York focused on the launch of Google’s new Pixel phone, the search giant also showed off the Nest Home Mini, a sec-

ond-generation version of the Google Home Mini that adds an improved speaker for better music playback, a chip for voice command processing, and a wall mount. It also a redesigned version of the Google WiFi home router system, now called Nest WiFi. In a demonstration at Google’s headquarters last week, the Nest Mini presented much-improved audio

clarity, bass and fullness compared with the previous generation. The on-board processing chip allows Google to load frequently used commands from the cloud directly to the device, meaning some tasks related to music playback and smart home automation will take less time. The device is also now made from recycled fabric and

plastic and comes in a new light blue color. The speaker remains $49. The new wireless routers continue with the previous design, with a mesh system that includes a base router and access points that can spread the connection across the home to avoid dead spots. The main new feature is that the routers now

double as Assistant devices, allowing them to respond to users’ questions and play music. The routers will be sold as a two-pack for $269 and a threepack for $349, and they come in multiple colors. Google started designing its own consumer hardware a few years ago to generate revenue growth beyond advertising.

The home-grown gadgets also help the company control the distribution of its web services, reducing reliance on other hardware makers such as Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co.

What you should ask when thinking about buying a newly constructed house By Michele Lerner The Washington Post Model home tours can be a valuable way to get a feel for what it would be like to live in a newly built house, but it’s important to remember that these model homes are also a sales tool meant to entice buyers. Often, the model includes optional features that will add to the cost of the house. In some cases, things are left out of a model home that could make the house less appeal-

ing, such as interior doors that could make the rooms feel smaller and window treatments that are needed for privacy but will reduce the natural light. Serious buyers need to understand the ramifications of buying a newly built house for their future and the ongoing value of the property. An on-site salesperson can be a great resource for information on the model homes, lots and plans for the community. We asked Raylene

Lewis, a real estate agent with Century 21 Beal in College Station, Texas, who sells new houses as well as existing ones, to share her suggestions for what to ask a salesperson in a model home. Top questions to ask when touring a model home: 1. Is there a new school proposed and funded for the development? 2. Where do the utilities come from? 3. What has been the price change from when the development began

until now? 4. Are there any upcoming zoning changes I need to be aware of? 5. What are the planned neighborhood features, when are they expected to be complete and what will be the HOA fees? 6. What type of warranty do you offer? 7. Is the foundation standard? Is the foundation certified by an engineer? 8. What can I expect my average utilities to be?

9. What will be included on the outside of my house, such as landscaping, gutters, fencing and a sprinkler system? 10. What will be included on the inside of my home, such as window blinds and different levels of countertops and flooring? 11. Are any builder discount incentives being offered? 12. How many phases will the development have? 13. How many copies of this exact floor plan are

in the subdivision? 14. What is the average turnaround time on construction? 15. Will you work with inspectors should I choose to hire a private one to review each stage of construction? 16. What is the process when something goes wrong — when I’m not happy with something or when something breaks? 17. Are there any special taxes or fees to pay because this is a new community?

Truth about boozy canned coffee By Emily Heil “It’s the Judy Garland of The Washington Post drinks.” The marriage of alcoPerhaps the drinks on the table before us were hol and caffeine isn’t an inevitability. After all, new, of course. A turducken of fads is model — some tales say one way of seeing the Naomi Campbell, others mini-boomlet of iced Kate Moss — ordered coffee laced with varying something “to wake me degrees of malt or wine- up, then [expletive] me based liquor and served up.”) In more recent hisin the slender aluminum tubes that have come tory, the combo brings to dominate the bever- to mind the vodka-Red age aisles — a trend for Bull craze of the early which you can thank/ aughts and Four Loko, blame the hard seltzer whose early formulation was dubbed “blackout in phenom White Claw. Beer giant Pabst Blue a can” and eventually Ribbon was one of the banned by the Food and first big entrants, intro- Drug Administration in ducing its hard coffee 2010. So, back to those this summer. Then the third-wave coffee maker drinks on the table. We La Colombe partnered up assembled four varietwith MillerCoors for its ies of boozy cold coffees high-end, cold-brewed and gave them a whirl version. Both are avail- — and a few sips. As a able in limited markets class, our tasters found as the companies test them to be super-sweet demand. Smaller labels, and overly creamy, with too, have gotten into the one exception. But the overriding response was mix. Another explanation simply . . . confusion. When, exactly, were for it is purely funcwe supposed to knock tional. Booze might be fun, but it can make you back these drinks? The sleepy, too, so pairing sugar and dairy bombs it with caffeine keeps are hardly light, sesthe good times going. As sion-able tipples. And one colleague described they don’t pair very well 0963_MortonAd.c_40.qxp_Layout 1 10/14/19 1:28 PM Page 1 the downers/uppers mix with food, except maybe

brunch, as one taster suggested. Or dessert? Maybe in place of dessert, we wondered? We imagined combining them with ice cream in shakes and affogato-style concoctions — but wait, wasn’t the can format supposed to make them take-anywhere convenient? Here’s what we tasted:

Cafe Agave Spiked Cold Brew

The offerings from this start-up business from San Diego’s La Jolla neighborhood distinguish themselves by being the booziest of the bunch. They clock in at 12.5 percent alcohol by volume, more than twice that of the others we tasted, with a base of wine instead of malt. The company has four flavors: espresso, mocha, vanilla-cinnamon and salted caramel. We detected the alcohol-forward profile of all of them — as well as a cloying sweetness we attributed to the namesake agave syrup — but we were divided on whether this was a good or bad thing. One taster panned the “unpleasant alcohol burn,” while another liked that “at least it’s not pretending it’s not booze.” The salted caramel and vanilla-cinnamon varieties were across-theboard losers, while the

mocha and espresso cans fared better.

La Colombe Hard Cold Brew

The pairing of a legit coffee brand with a beer behemoth made us optimistic about this one. And the can’s sleek gold-on-navy design was another classy clue. Once poured, the line (it comes in black and vanilla-flavored, both 4.2 percent ABV) also distinguished itself by being the only we tasted to omit dairy, meaning the concoctions were lighter-bodied and less dessert-like. The black variety was preferred, with our tasters agreeing that it tasted like a regular chilled coffee or espresso — a decent bean even, with one sipper detecting a pleasant “berry bitterness.” We preferred the minimal sweetness of the black over the vanilla, which one likened to “the watery end of some vanilla Frappuccino that you sip through a straw before tossing the cup in the trash.”

Newground Hard Dutch Latte

heavy-bodied creaminess, could swap in for an after-dinner drink, though at 5 percent ABV it’s lower-octane than most nightcaps. “Reminds me of Baileys Irish Cream,” one said.

Pabst Blue Ribbon Hard Coffee

Our tasters identified something awfully familiar about the flavor of this one, but there was no consensus on just what it was.

“Nestlé Quik,” one suggested. Other sweets that it conjured included “a liquefied malted-milk ball,” a “milkshake” and a “melted Snickers.” So dessert, then — with a 5 percent ABV kick, that is. Perhaps it was the nostalgic associations that made at least one of us cop to a guilty-pleasure attraction to the can: “Why am I ashamed to say I like it?”
