“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”
Mona Lisa: How should you be displayed? By Natalie B. Compton The Washington Post During every minute of the Louvre Museum’s operating hours, tourists crowd en masse to see the world’s most famous painting in all its glory. Hanging behind sealed bulletproof glass, the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci didn’t rise to meteoric fame until after it was stolen in 1911. Today, it draws millions of visitors annually. But many leave their visit underwhelmed. Then came a hot take from Jason Farago, art critic for the New York Times. In his piece “It’s Time to Take Down the Mona Lisa,” Farago calls the painting “a security hazard, an educational obstacle and not even a satisfying bucket-list item” and calls for the oft-hailed masterpiece to be moved to a space built just for her. Twitter erupted in a respective tweetstorm, with the social media platform’s users firing off a range of responses. A lot of people seemed to have stopped reading at the headline and thought Farago wanted to do away with the painting completely. Others sent their ideas — facetious fixes and solid suggestions alike — for how to
improve the situation. Here are our six favorite solutions, from the practical to the ludicrous. 1. Make a Mona scavenger hunt Instead of featuring only the one true Mona Lisa, plant a number of fake copies around the Louvre and let people guess which one is real, according to one Twitter user. Farago noted in his story that there’s no other painting at the museum with a crowding problem, and Marc Breaux’s solution would take the crowding away from the singular Mona. Verifying paintings, even da Vinci’s works, is a hotly contested topic anyway. Why not throw more fakes into the mix? 2. Ban smartphone use in the gallery People aren’t necessarily clamoring to catch a glimpse of the painting itself, but to get a photo of it or with it. Political writer Susan Milligan argues that if photography were banned, the crowds would be less chaotic. Not everyone will vibe with her solution; if you don’t take a Mona Lisa picture, did you even visit? We’re just supposed to tell people that we saw it? In 2019, you need Instagram proof of your fine art adventures. Or at least a photograph

that will live on an iPad for eternity. 3. Move the Mona Lisa to Marseille Paris does not need any help drawing tourists. Why not encourage those 10 million people who went to see the Mona Lisa last year to see a different French city altogether? That’s what one Twitter user recommended. While Farago argued for a move to the United Arab Emirates, Stephen Smith first offers the suggestion of keeping the painting in the family and shipping it to Marseille. It’d be a tourism boost for any French city outside of the capital, and it would probably cut down the number of visitors anyway to only those willing to make the trip. 4. Steal the Mona Lisa We do not endorse this one, but GQ editor Chris Gayomali throws in a wild card with the suggestion to steal the Mona Lisa. Considering the painting went whatever the 1911 equivalent of viral was when it was first stolen, it could work magic again today. The move would create a new media
firestorm leading up to the painting’s move to Marseille. 5. Make the Mona Lisa into a festival Millennials have been blamed for killing a number of once-loved things, from cereal to the diamond industry. Is the generation to blame for killing the Mona Lisa, too? A millennial-caused problem deserves a millennial-approved solution. Combine the generation’s penchant for travel experiences and music festivals by creating a festival dedicated to da Vinci’s painting, complete with a hot local food lineup, noteworthy musical headliners and long lines for porta-potties. 6. Destroy all famous art In a “this is why we can’t have nice things” move, Sean O’Neal calls for a destruction not just of the Mona Lisa, but also all major works of art. We’ve proved that we can’t handle the heat, so it’s time to get out of the creative kitchen completely. Leave us with lesser-known artwork until we learn how to behave in the big leagues.

“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”
Disney has glitchy debut of streaming service By Alex Horton The Washington Post Thousands of Disney fans eager to watch their favorite movies were greeted with error messages Tuesday, hours after the debut of the Disney+ streaming service had crushed its servers, the company said. Users flocked to social media to update their followers on the anticipated event. Many could not begin the new Star Wars show “The Mandalorian.” Instead, they were greeted with a frowning character from the movie “Wreck-It-Ralph” paired with a network error message, or Mickey Mouse stranded in space.
The problems for some users undercut a huge day for Disney, which has touted the streaming service as a major part of its portfolio. “The Mandalorian” is the flagship launch show for about 500 films and 7,500 episodes of programming from Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and others. “The demand for Disney+ has exceeded our highest expectations,” the company said. “We are so pleased you’re excited to watch all your favorites and are working quickly to resolve any current issues. We appreciate your patience.” Thousands of complaints were flagged
Tuesday morning, according to Downdetector, a website that collects complaints about websites and apps. Disney spokeswoman Jessica Casano declined to say how many users experienced problems and how many successfully streamed content. Disney chief executive Bob Iger set huge expectations for Disney+ in his 2017 announcement for the service. “We’re going to launch big, and we’re going to launch hot,” he said. In the lead-up to the launch, Disney executives said they prepared for this exact problem of huge demand spikes. “We’ve built capabilities to sustain that,
building has been sold. January 2020 I will be liquidating all equipment & framing materials.

both in terms of processing the transactions that all come in — in a very, very short period of time — as well as the streams,” Michael Paull, the company’s head of streaming, told the Verge in August. Disney+ costs $6.99 a month, and a bundle of Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ will set you back $12.99 a month. The service is available in the United States, Canada and the Netherlands, the company said, and will launch in Australia and New Zealand on Nov. 19, though it is unclear whether technical problems will persist through the week. That second round of releases will also
include Puerto Rico. Casano declined to explain why it wasn’t available there for the U.S. release Tuesday. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory.

“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”
App used to stalk woman in Australia By Reis Thebault The Washington Post She woke to her ex-boyfriend standing at the foot of her bed. At first, he said nothing. He stood there, she later recalled to a court, staring and silent for what “seemed like an eternity.” He then told her, low and quiet, “you’re lucky it’s just me and not a robber or a bad person to do you harm.” She didn’t know it then, she said in court, but that mid-evening break-in was far from the first time he had stalked her — he’d been doing it for months, in real time, authorities said. The man, whom she dated for six months, allegedly weaponized simple technology and smartphone apps that allowed him to remotely stop and
start her car, control the vehicle’s windows and track her constantly. “I am still trying to come to terms with the scope of violation and trauma I have experienced,” she said. The account of these crimes, which took place in the Australian state of Tasmania, was reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corp. ABC did not name the victim or the accused, but the case highlights a troubling trend that domestic violence advocates have warned about for more than a decade: As surveillance and tracking technology becomes more advanced and ubiquitous, stalking and other forms of intimate partner violence can become more difficult to fight. “Technology doesn’t
cause stalking” Toby Shulruff, a technology safety specialist with the National Network to End Domestic Violence, said in 2017. “However, the integration of technology into so many aspects of our lives has made it easier for stalkers to create fear and do harm.” In the Australia case, which resulted in the 38-year-old man pleading guilty to stalking charges in the Hobart Magistrates Court, he tracked the woman’s phone location using spyware, for which he paid a monthly fee, ABC reported. Though disturbing, that method of surveillance is relatively common, according to a Motherboard report on the “stalkerware surveillance market” that put the number of

Forty-one percent of providers reported that abusers use GPS tracking. “Digital abuse of intimate partners is both more mundane and more complicated than we might think,” said Cornell sociology professor Karen Levy, writing in Slate last year. “Many forms of digital abuse require little to no sophistication and are carried out using everyday devices and

Abusers have different kinds of access to and knowledge about their victims than the privacy threats we often think about.” Levy is one of a number of academics researching the intersection of digital technology and intimate partner violence, and she co-authored a paper on the ways social media and technology have created “a stalker’s paradise.”

He helped her purchase it when the two were together, which gave him access to the car’s registration information, allowing him to set up the app. ABC did not identify the app, but its functions are similar to Land Rover’s “InControl” app, which allows car owners to start their vehicles remotely, adjust temperatures and track their locations. A spokesman for Jaguar Land Rover North America said he’s never heard of such a case in the United States, but said he’s looking into the allegations from Australia. A small deer-like creature that conservationists feared was extinct has been photographed, in Vietnam, for the first time in almost three decades. Scientists had last spotted the silverbacked chevrotain, also called the Vietnamese mouse-deer, in 1990 in central Vietnam, Global Wildlife Conservation said in a statement. Scientists talked with residents and government forest rangers in the southern Vietnamese coastal city of Nha Trang who said they had seen a gray chevrotain, which is a more common type of chevrotain than the silver-sheened one. The locals and rangers told the scientists that the chevrotain population had been declining because of hunting. The scientists then set
“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve” for other species in other parts of the world.” The conservationists published their findings on Monday in the scientific journal Nature Ecology & Evolution. They declined to identify the specific location where the chevrotain had been photographed, citing the prevalence of commercial hunting and the high demand for wildlife products in Southeast Asia. There are 10 known species of chevrotains, most of which live in Asia. At less than 10 pounds each, chevro-
up three camera traps, which in five months captured 275 photos of the silver-backed chevrotain. Another 29 cameras put in place for an additional five months recorded 1,881 more pictures. “To the scientific world this was a lost species, but local people had known about it,” Andrew Tilker, Asian species officer at Global Wildlife Conservation, told CNN. “It was only by utilizing the local ecological knowledge that we were successful. That can be replicated
tains are the world’s smallest ungulates, or hoofed mammals. They are solitary animals who walk on the tips of their hoofs and have two fangs. Four silver-backed chevrotains were collected in southern Vietnam in 1910, leading to the first descriptions of the creatures. Scientists do not appear to have conducted follow-up searches for the rare animals after a hunterkilled silver-backed chevrotain was found in 1990, according to the new study.
“Given the considerable increase in hunting pressure that has occurred in Vietnam since the early 1990s, it was unclear whether the species still existed,” the researchers wrote in the study. “Once again, the silver-backed chevrotain became a lost species.” Scientists know little about the silver-backed chevrotain’s ecology or conservation status, according to Global Wildlife Conservation. The organization said the rediscovery of the rarely seen creature
encourages them to further research it and to push for its conservation. Conservationists said they plan to put camera traps in two additional areas to figure out the size and stability of this population of chevrotains, as well as threats to their survival. High levels of hunting with homemade wire snares have created an “empty forest syndrome” in Vietnam and placed several species on the brink of extinction, according to the study.

Germs can fly 6 to 8 feet after sneeze or cough By Linda Searling The distance germs travel when someone sneezes or coughs may be farther than you think. The average uncovered sneeze sends droplets about six feet, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But for smaller-size particles, it’s more like eight feet or farther because of a gaslike cloud that keeps
them airborne, according to videos of sneezes, recorded and analyzed by scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. What’s more, a hearty sneeze can spew forth droplets at speeds of up to 100 mph, according to research from the University of Bristol, in England. Particles expelled in a sneeze or cough can carry germs for an array of infec-
tious diseases — colds, the flu, chickenpox, measles and more. To keep from spreading germs this way, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue whenever you sneeze or cough. If you’re caught without a tissue, health experts suggest using the crook of your elbow. That will keep the germs from becoming airborne and will keep your hands from
getting germy. If you do sneeze or cough into your hands, wash them immediately with warm water and soap. Rinsing with
water alone won’t kill germs. Or use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol. Bottom line: To prevent the airborne

Amazon pushes into grocery business with LA store Amazon confirmed it plans to open a new grocery store brand under in the Los Angeles area next year, initiating the latest phase of its brick-and-mortar expansion. The move, which has been rumored for months, will expand grocery offerings beyond the upscale selection shoppers typically find in Whole Foods locations and its smaller cashierless Amazon Go convenience-like stores. It’s the latest move by Amazon into brickand-mortar, a category it spurned for much of its early existence as it fundamentally shifted the retail landscape and prompted more and more shoppers to buy online with its Prime fast-shipping membership program and other perks. Market-research firm eMarketer expects Amazon to account for about 37.7 percent of all U.S. e-commerce sales this year. Over the past few
years, however, Amazon has become focused on physical retail as a strategic initiative, including opening popup stores, bookstores and other locations. Opening mainstream grocery stores is a “natural evolution” for Amazon, UBS Securities analyst Eric Sheridan wrote in a recent report. The company could use the locations of the new markets as a distribution point for grocery delivery, something it already does with Whole Foods stores. If Amazon makes delivery contingent on being a member of its lucrative Prime program, it “could act as a tailwind for Prime membership growth over time,” Sheridan wrote. The company plans to open its new grocery store location in Woodland Hills, California, just north of Los Angeles, in 2020, Amazon spokeswoman Pia Arthur said. Tech news website CNET first reported the news of new location,
after the company published jobs postings for it. One opening encouraged job-seekers to join the company as “we launch Amazon’s first grocery store in Woodland Hills.” The Wall Street Journal reported in March that Amazon was eyeing expansion in the grocery business. Food has long stymied the online retail giant, in part because of the fickle nature of both consumer shopping habits and the difficulty of predicting how much fresh food to order and when. The company scaled back its AmazonFresh delivery service in some ZIP codes in 2017 after struggling to make it work. The company has learned from its acquisition of Whole Foods that same year, however, and has been rapidly expanding its footprint in two-hour grocery delivery. Recently, the company also started including Fresh delivery for free with Prime membership. The company has yet to break through in the

ing to a 2017 report from Citi Research. The grocery expansion also ratchets up Amazon’s rivalry with Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer as well as its largest seller of groceries. Analysts have said the move could help make buying from Amazon even more of a habit for consumers, given the regular pace of grocery shopping. Owning physical retail also gives the company more places for shoppers to make returns, one of the expensive aspects of running an online store. Amazon already partners with Kohl’s for free returns.

Amazon’s overall sales in the quarter grew 24 percent to $70 billion. Amazon offers online grocery options, such as its AmazonFresh and Prime Now delivery businesses. “Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”
Wild turkeys are an interesting bunch By Jason Bittel The Washington Post With Thanksgiving right around the corner, lots of people will be thinking about turkey — where to buy one, how to prepare the bird and how many leftovers there will be for sandwiches on Friday. But how much do any of us really know about turkeys? For instance, did you know that while most of the turkeys eaten on Thanksgiving come from farms, there are still wild turkeys across North America? Or that the species has been around for 5 million years? Or that there’s a kind
of turkey in Mexico known as the ocellated turkey, whose feathers shimmer an iridescent orange and turquoise? To learn more about these underappreciated animals, I talked to Bradford Kasberg, wetland restoration manager for Audubon Great Lakes. Kasberg is also a citizen of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, which holds the turkey in high regard. Where others might see a fat, bumbling bird with a funny face and a silly gobble, Kasberg says his community sees turkeys as highly social and communicative creatures that other animals rely upon.
“Anything with sharp teeth and claws really wants to eat these birds,” Kasberg says. Turkey predators include hawks, coyotes, foxes and wolves, as well as raccoons and opossums, which like to eat turkey eggs and chicks (called poults). “Turkeys are big, they have a lot of meat on them, they’re fairly slow-moving, and they’re on the ground most of the time.” However, Kasberg noted that wild turkeys can take to the sky if need be. “They can’t fly for long periods of time, but they’re agile enough to fly away and escape predators. They typ-
ically sleep on the top of trees,” he says. Aside from the gobble, turkeys produce up to 28 calls to stay in touch with their flock, Kasberg says. The flock usually includes a group of adult females and their babies. Because everything wants to eat them, a turkey flock will cluck, coo and gobble constantly to keep tabs on one another and let the others know if anything dangerous comes too close. The adults can also be pretty aggressive if they or their poults are cornered, he says. Here’s another fun fact: Male turkeys, called toms,
have bald, featherless heads with all sorts of dangling skin flaps and knobs known as the snood, the wattle and caruncles. These funny bits can change color, from whitish or blue to bright red, when the birds get excited. They may also play a role in keeping the turkey cool. So this Thanksgiving, before you tuck into your feast, take a moment to think about the bird on your table and where it comes from. While turkeys are little more than deli meat to many of us, out in the wild, they are providers and survivors — wattles, gobbles and all.
Hotel therapy animals calm holiday stress By Natalie B. Compton The Washington Post
The holiday season is fraught with cliches (albeit cliches we love). Everywhere you turn, you see the same lights, hear the same songs and drink the same eggnog. And then there’s Portland, Ore., a city so unique that it got its own show (“Portlandia”) to lampoon its many quirks. You can now add this to the list: festively dressed therapy llamas in a hotel lobby. Kimpton Hotel Mona-
ton Hotel Monaco Portland’s general manager. “Last year we had them in the lobby before we walked them around the neighborhood, and immediately the word is out once you see a llama. People were so excited by the chance to touch and feed and get some photos with a llama.” The idea for the partnership came from a hotel employee who was friends with someone at Mountain Peaks Therapy Llamas & Alpacas. After seeing the reactions from guests, Portland locals and tour-
co Portland has partnered with the nonprofit Mountain Peaks Therapy Llamas & Alpacas to host a few holiday-themed llama visits where guests can interact with the shaggy creatures in the spirit of stress relief. The Friday lobby visits are scheduled Dec. 6 and 20. It’s not the first time the hotel has sponsored animal shenanigans. “Prior years, we’ve had the llamas out, and walked through the downtown areas and spread holiday cheer unexpectedly,” says Travis Williams, Kimp-
ists, the hotel decided to bring them back. “Once we saw the joy that it brought people, we just kept going,” Williams says. When the Mountain Peaks therapy llamas and alpacas aren’t making holiday-themed visits to the Kimpton, they’re herded around Washington and Oregon to hospitals, rehab facilities, senior communities, hospice care, schools and special-needs organizations. According to the Mountain Peaks website, “research has shown that animals
help humans by acting as social bridges, reducing blood pressure, directing thoughts outward, and serving as strong motivators for accomplishing difficult tasks.” For those concerned about the well-being of llamas and alpacas in a hotel lobby, Williams said the animals are well fed and taken care of and that they will be attended to by handlers during the visit. To promote the animal visits, Kimpton Hotel Monaco Portland is running a Fa-LaLa-La-Llama package

starting at $155 plus tax per night. The package includes a $5 donation to Mountain Peaks, a stuffed toy llama as well as a plate of holiday milk and cookies. For the ultimate experience, book the package to overlap with the llama visit days. It could be the most unusual thing you do this holiday season. “Everyone’s got an option to go see Santa, or an option to go see a Christmas tree, but an option to go see a llama is pretty cool,” Williams says.
