Bizarre fortunes flourish as world’s richest gain $1.2 trillion By Tom Metcalf, Jack Witzig Bloomberg The leveraging of a giant social-media presence, a catchy tune about a family of sharks and a burgeoning collection of junkyards are just a few of the curious ways that helped make 2019 a fertile year for fortunes to blossom around the world. Kylie Jenner became the youngest self-made billionaire this year after her company, Kylie Cosmetics, signed an exclusive partnership with Ulta Beauty Inc. She then sold a 51% stake for $600 million. It has been almost two months since the Washington Nationals captured their first World Series championship, but people around the world are still singing along to the baseball team’s adopted rallying cry: “Baby Shark, doodoo doo-doo doo-doo.” The Korean family that helped popularize the
viral earworm are now worth about $125 million. Even car wrecks proved to be a treasure trove. Willis Johnson, the goldchain-wearing Oklahoma native who founded Copart Inc., has amassed a $1.9 billion fortune by building a network of junkyards to sell damaged autos. The emergence of atypical fortunes underscores just how much money the uber-rich accumulated in 2019. And the richer they were at the start of the year, the richer they got. The world’s 500 wealthiest people tracked by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index added $1.2 trillion, boosting their collective net worth 25% to $5.9 trillion. Such gains are sure to add fuel to the already heated debate about widening wealth and income inequality. In the U.S., the richest 0.1% control a bigger share of the pie than at any time since 1929, prompting some politicians to call for a

radical restructuring of the economy. “The hoarding of wealth by the few is coming at the cost of people’s lives,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a self-described democratic socialist, said in a Dec. 12 tweet as the U.K. began to vote. Still, the defeat of Britain’s socialist opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn, whose campaign included attacks on billionaires and calls to “rewrite the rules of our economy,” gave an added boost to mega-fortunes. Leading the 2019 gains was France’s Bernard Arnault, who added $36.5 billion as he rose on the Bloomberg index to become the world’s third-richest person and one of three centibillionaires — those with a net worth of at least $100 billion. In all, just 52 people on the ranking saw their fortunes decline on the
year. Amazon.com’s Jeff Bezos was down almost $9 billion, but that drop is because of his divorce settlement with MacKenzie Bezos. The e-commerce titan is still ending the year as the world’s richest person after Amazon shares jumped on Thursday. The company reported a ‘record breaking’ holiday season with billions of items shipped and “tens of millions” of Amazon devices like the Echo Dot sold. Here’s what the year looked like for the 0.001%. 2019 winners: ► The 172 American billionaires on the Bloomberg ranking added $500 billion, with Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg up $27.3 billion and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates rose $22.7 billion. ► Representation from China continued to grow, with the nation’s
contingent rising to 54, second only to the U.S. He Xiangjian, founder of China’s biggest air-conditioner exporter, was the standout performer as his wealth surged 79% to $23.3 billion. ► Russia’s richest added $51 billion, a collective increase of 21%, as emerging-market assets from currencies to stocks and bonds rebounded in 2019 after posting big losses a year earlier. 2019 declines: ► Rupert Murdoch’s personal fortune dropped by about $10 billion after proceeds from Walt Disney’s purchase of Fox assets were distributed to his six children, making them billionaires in their own right. ► Interactive Brokers Group Inc.’s Thomas Peterffy saw his wealth slump by $2.1 billion as investors weighed a reshaped competitive landscape for brokerage businesses after rival
Charles Schwab Corp. eliminated commissions and agreed to buy TD Ameritrade Holding Corp. ► WeWork’s Adam Neumann saw his fortune implode — at least on paper — as the struggling office-sharing company’s valuation dropped to $8 billion in October from an estimated $47 billion at the start of the year. Still, SoftBank Group Corp.’s rescue package left Neumann’s status as a billionaire intact. New billionaires: ► White Claw, the “hard seltzer” that was the hit of the summer among millennials, helped boost Anthony von Mandl’s net worth to $3.6 billion. ► Mastering the art of fast-food deliveries proved rewarding for Jitse Groen, whose soaring Takeaway.com NV lifted his wealth to $1.5 billion.

Flu season is here, and it’s coming for your kids By Michelle Cortez The Washington Post
001484215r2
The flu is out in force. And so far this season, it’s been hitting children the hardest. Influenza is a wily virus-it’s almost impossible to predict where and how it will strike as it circumnavigates the globe. There are, however, some patterns that routinely occur, allowing investigators and public health agencies to sometimes anticipate what lies ahead. This is not one of those times. Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said flulike symptoms started spurring higher than
normal doctor visits in the U.S. in early November-weeks earlier than other recent flu seasons. The disease has also shown up in and shut down elementary schools across the South and West, in states such as Texas, Idaho, Oregon and Alaska. Much of the Northeast, a traditional hotbed for flu-induced misery, remains largely unscathed for now. At the same time, the severity of this year’s flu has been comparatively low. The number of people dying from pneumonia and influenza during the first week of December was substantially lower than the 6.4 percent thresh-
old used to declare a flu epidemic at this time of year. (A new report on the spread of influenza spread is scheduled for release later Friday.) This of course is a welcome change from two years ago, when an intense flu season started picking up speed in November and held a sustained peak into January and February. Some hospitals were so overwhelmed that they set up triage tents in parking lots. Ultimately, about 61,000 Americans died, making it one of the longest and most deadly flu seasons in years. So why do so many people have the flu so
early this year, and why is it relatively weak? The type of virus that’s circulating may be the explanation. “Influenza activity is a little bit unusual for this time of the year because what we have predominantly is influenza B,” said Lynnette Brammer, head of the CDC’s domestic surveillance program. “Influenza B activity tends to impact children more than adults, particularly older adults. And the elderly drive mortality and hospitalizations.’’ But influenza B doesn’t let the youngsters off the hook. “If we stick with an influenza B season, I
expect this would probably be a mild year for the population as a whole,” Brammer said.”But for kids, hospitalizations and even pediatric deaths would be similar to any other season. For kids, influenza B can be just as bad as influenza A.” It’s uncommon for influenza B to hit first in the U.S., which often sees an initial wave of the more dangerous influenza A viruses-the types that can cause a flu pandemic. But the season is far from over in North America: The current spread of a weaker Influenza B could easily be followed by a strain of influenza A.
“Anyone who tries to predict the flu season based on early information doesn’t understand influenza very well,” said Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota. “The case numbers are up early, but it’s such a difficult disease to predict — I don’t think we can say anything about how severe it may be.” There is one point of which experts are certain, though. “Flu is here,” Osterholm said. “Now is the time to get an immunization if you haven”t already.”

Mealworm macaroni? Chefs turn bugs into tasty dishes By Lorraine Allen The Washington Post What would you say if your parents served mealworm macaroni for dinner? How about tarantula tacos, with chocolate chip cricket cookies as dessert? You might think they were pranking you, but eating insects and spiders is no joke. The Amazon rainforest in South America is burning, and that’s partly because of cattle farming and human consumption of meat. As awareness of climate change grows, many people are working hard to find immediate and long-term solutions, including chefs and visionaries in the food industry — because one obvious and quick way to cut pollution, reduce waste and create a more sustainable future is to rethink what we eat. In 2013, the United Nations reported that a bug-rich diet could play an important role in global health and sustainability. Sound gross? Bugs are actually tasty, and billions of humans have been feasting on them since the beginning of time. Today, more than a third of the global population regularly enjoys insects and arachnids (mainly spiders and scorpions) as food, according to the experts at Brooklyn Bugs, in Brooklyn, New York. The organization aims to change the way
many Americans think of creepy-crawly things on our plates, in our mouths and in our bellies. “We all need to redefine what we think of as food,” says Joseph Yoon, executive director of Brooklyn Bugs. Yoon has been crisscrossing the nation enticing students, educators and cafeteria staff to embrace edible insects. He is asking them to consider, with all the environmental and health benefits bugs deliver, why we’re not eating them already. Yoon says eating insects is like eating any other food. Because we’re not used to preparing them or seeing them on menus, he says, many Americans may perceive bugs as revolting. But when sampled in familiar, delicious dishes, views often change. With more than 2,000 types of edible creatures identified — including flies, bees, spiders and caterpillars, each with distinctive textures and flavors — where do you start? Here, Yoon shares three popular bugs for kids: Crickets: Like all insects, these great hoppers use far less water, feed and space than cattle and other larger sources of protein. Thanks to budding popularity, energy bars, chocolate balls, chips, pasta, flour and more made from crickets are widely available online and in specialty stores. These buggers even come in cotton-candy flavor. Mealworms: A mealworm is actually the larva of a beetle, and, yucky as that may sound, they’re
yummy! What do they taste like? It depends on how they’re prepared. When roasted or baked, they have a nutty flavor. According to the growers at Livin Farms, many compare mealworms to sunflower seeds, peanuts or pumpkin seeds. Black ants: These little guys’ zesty, citrusy flavor is surprising. “It’s like popping a (lemon hard candy) in your mouth,” says Yoon, with delight. Nutritionally insects are powerhouses, containing about the same amount of protein as beans, meat or fish, ounce for ounce, as well as essential fatty acids, important fiber (not usually found in meat), and loads of healthy vitamins and minerals. If that’s not enough to persuade you to try a plate of environmentally friendly fried dragonflies, or a handful of chocolate-coated spiders, consider this: Like shellfish, insects and arachnids are arthropods, so if you enjoy shrimp, crab or lobster, you’re already eating their relatives from the sea. But insects therefore share some common food allergens with shellfish, too, so be sure to seek the advice of your doctor before eating any bugs if food allergies are a concern. For buggy recipes and inspiration, check out the Brooklyn Bugs Instagram feed, the Smithsonian series Bug Bites or an insect cookbook. But first, as with any other food, be sure to get your bugs from reputable farms or providers — not your local park!
Two Wisconsin dogs rescued by bus driver on cold night By Michael Brice-Saddler The Washington Post Jamie Grabowski had just finished her bus route in Milwaukee on Dec. 18 when she noticed something peculiar around midnight: two dogs, seemingly unattended, darting in and out of the road. Cognizant of freezing temperatures in the area that night, Grabowski, a Milwaukee County Transit System driver, decided her trip back to the garage would have to wait. Surveillance video shows her bring the vehicle to a stop before calling out to the two dogs, who stayed closely attached to each other as she beckoned
them closer. “Hey, you two! You need to go home right now,” Grabowski is heard saying in the video. “C’mon, c’mon, c’mon inside!” Grabowski’s plea was successful. She opened the door and quickly guided her late-night passengers — a pit bull and Doberman pinscher — inside. The two pups explored the bus cabin while Grabowski called authorities and explained her predicament. “I got them on the bus because I thought they were going to get hit,” she’s heard telling a Milwaukee County Transit System dispatcher before turning
to the dogs. “Come here, babies! I know. Come here — I’m going to get you home.” Grabowski, a selfdescribed “dog whisperer,” played with her two new friends until a police officer arrived, according to the transit system. She later learned that the dogs, both about 2 years old, had escaped from their family’s yard nearly three miles from where they were found. The family was looking for them all night. Grabowski said she was grateful to be in the right place to help the dogs, who could have frozen to death in the 20-degree weather.

“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”
Advice for bad weather driving By Christopher Elliot The Washington Post
Unless you enjoy living dangerously, getting behind the wheel in a winter storm probably isn’t your idea of fun. “Road surfaces can change quickly between dry, snow-packed and icy — all of which require a different approach to steering and stopping,” says Leslie Kasperowicz, a Minneapolis driver who edits CarInsurance.org, a car insurance website. The trick, pros like Kasperowicz say, is to stay ahead of the weather, pack the right gear and make sure you understand the fundamentals of bad-weather driving. Downloading the right smartphone apps can help. They include: Offline Survival Manual (Android only): This worst-case-scenario app includes helpful information on how
to make a fire, build a shelter and find food, as well as other information you might need in an emergency. True to its name, once you download it, you don’t need a cellular connection to access the information. Waze (Android/iOS): Waze is a navigation app that provides turnby-turn directions and user-contributed information on traffic, travel times and route conditions. Joe Gast, CEO at Truck Driver Institute, a driving school, recommends it to his drivers. “Waze allows you to leverage traffic insights from other drivers so you can stay on safe and clear roads,” he says. It’s particularly useful during the winter because road conditions can be volatile. Weather Underground (Android/iOS): This app offers drivers hyperlocal weather data. During the winter, it highlights

weather-related traffic hazards. “Weather Underground issues ice alerts and warnings for other problematic conditions that can affect your driving during the cold winter months,” says Jared Kamrowski, who founded Thrifty Traveler, a travel website. There are also state transportation agency apps — such as Pennsylvania’s 511PA Mobile App — that can help. Pennsylvania’s app reports road conditions and enables drivers to monitor the state’s plow trucks. If you’re driving in a blizzard, that can mean the difference between getting there and spending a night stuck in a snowbank. If you’re driving in winter conditions, what should you pack in the car? For a list, I turned to Jess Larsen, who grew up snowboarding in northern Alberta and is a vice presi-

dent for an ad agency in Provo, Utah. He’s driven in whiteout conditions many times, and he still gets a chance to practice his winter-driving skills on the way to Utah’s ski resorts. Here’s what Larsen carries: ► Extra shoes or boots to wear while pushing yourself or others out of a snowbank. If you’re wearing nice work shoes, Larsen says, “you’ll freeze within 10 steps in the snow.” ► A little fold-up shovel so you can dig yourself or others out of the snow. Make sure it is metal in case you have to chip away ice under a tire. “In the cold weather, everyone snaps the inexpensive plastic one they got a deal on and then starts feeling overwhelmed about what they’re going to do now,” Larsen says. ► A small blanket, a water bottle and some snacks. Take extra snack
if you have kids, because they’ll get anxious in the cold — and hungry. ► If you’re planning to do a lot of winter driving, stow a box of cat litter in the car. It’s a cheap way to give your tires a little traction on snow or ice. One final item you shouldn’t leave home without: a roadside-assistance program. “Shell out the cash to AAA or something like that” Larsen says. “Then make sure everybody in your family programs the number into their phone.” All of which brings us to the best strategies for winter driving. Assuming you’ve downloaded the right apps and packed the car with everything you need, what now? Practice your winter driving. Larsen recommends finding an empty parking lot after a snowstorm. “Try getting yourself into a spin

and seeing how fast you can recover,” he says. Also, practice turning at various speeds and stopping. Get a feel for how your car responds in snow. “As far as driving itself, nothing can compete with meaningful repetitions,” Larsen adds. And, finally, slow down, experts say. Kamrowski, who grew up in Fargo, North Dakota, says that all too often, motorists will pass you on an icy highway and then “you drive a few miles down the road and see them in the ditch.” But the best advice for driving in severe winter weather is this: Don’t. If you can avoid taking the car out while it’s snowing, you’ll save yourself a lot of trouble. You might miss the first couple of ski runs on a powder day, but at least you’ll be alive.
