Department Mission:

The mission of the Mitchell Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department is to build community through the development of parks, recreational programs, facilities and services which bring meaning, purpose, and pleasure to people’s lives.

WEATHER POLICY

Outdoor programs will be canceled if weather conditions create a potential hazard for participants. Such conditions include heavy rain, wet field conditions, tornado warnings, lightning, or excessive heat combined with high humidity. TRANSPORTATION A PROBLEM?

Palace Transit Can Help! Buses are available for transportation to and from the Parks & Recreation programs. Price is $2.00 for a one-way Monday thru Friday 7:00am - 5:00pm and $3.00 one-way evenings and weekends. For unlimited rides check out the Summer Bus Pass Program. All rides must be scheduled by 4:00 pm the business day before Curb-to-curb service and wheelchair accessible. To make arrangements, call 605-995-8440.

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE:

* If the fees are too high to fit your budget, talk to Kevin DeVries, Todd Cavanaugh or Jamie Henkel and arrangements will be made for your child’s participation.

** All scholarships MUST be set up at the Rec Center -you can set up your account at home, then stop in to show Notice of Action Letter from Social Services and we will set you up for a 50% scholarship for programs. Scholarships also apply to Aquatic Center memberships, but are not at the 25% level.

***If you set up a scholarship last year you must come in and set up another one for this year.

Join DWU baseball coach Charlie Dubanoski and his players as they direct the baseball program.

Boys will be classified into three age groups of 8U, 10U & 12U.

Location: East four-plex at Cadwell Park, diamonds D, E, F, G.

8U BASEBALL:

Completed Kindergarten - 8 yrs as of January 1. Skills, drills and scrimmages make this 7 weeks a fun intro to baseball. Each group will meet on Tuesdays & Thursdays for 1 hour each day between 9:00 am - Noon. Groups will meet at Cadwell Fields D, E, F, G. Teams will be formed prior to games beginning. Program runs June 4 - July 18. Players will need their own gloves. Uniform shirts will be provided.

Join MHS varsity coaches along with players as they direct the instruction of the Summer Softball program. Girls will be classified into three age groups of 8U, 10U & 12U. The season will consist of four weeks of instruction, followed by 3 weeks of games. Equal teams will be formed prior to games beginning.

Dry Run Creek Bike & Walking Path begins at Burr Street and ends at Minnesota Street. The Bike & Walking Path Committee is in the process of designing future improvements for Mitchell’s Bike Path System. Maps are available at the Park & Recreation Dept.

Join Palace City Pedalers as they incorporate two things kids love, bikes & Parks. Participants will receive isntruction on biking safety on city streets as well as an introduction to various city parks in Mitchell. The program will run on Monday afternoons in June. Particpants will need to be able to ride a bike and provide their own bike and helmet.

Under the guidance from Palace City Pedalers, riders will be introduced to the fun of biking single track trails. This program will reinforce biking safety & proper riding technique while exploring the numerous trails around Lake Mitchell. The program will run on Monday afternoons in July. Participants will meet at and return to different trail heads at various locations on the lake.

Bring your canine friend to the Mitchell Dog Park! The dog park is located on

A family camping center overlooking Lake Mitchell with fishing, swimming, canoes, pedal boats, paddle boards, playground, hiking trail and a laundry facility.

The campground includes 49 RV campsites with full hookups & 9 Tent Sites. The campground is open from April 1 - October 31. Full hookups include water, sewer and electricity. RV sites have 50-amp or 30-amp sites available; tent sites with electricity are also available.

Reservations begin online September 1 each year. Reservable dates are May 15 through September 15. First-come, first-served sites are available daily but not guaranteed. Self-pay system is utilized for first-come, first-served. There is no manager on site, but campground hosts are available to assist campers.

Reservations are available but not required. We are currently taking online reservations for 2024 (online reservation fee is 4.95%). Reservations are accepted up to one week in advance; available sites within the week will be on first-come, first-served basis. All reservable sites that have not been reserved are available to campers who arrive without a reservation. The maximum allowable stay limit will depend on the next date for which the site has been reserved.
