Projects and traditions keep 4-H attendance high at the fair By Mercedes Lemke The Daily Republic HURON – Since 1919, 4-H members in South Dakota have lived out their motto of “making the best better” at the South Dakota State Fair through projects and events. The 2017 state fair is set to be no different with newly added companion animal project and Norby Event Center building. The tradition can continue. Companion animals will be seen more at this year’s South Dakota State Fair because of the newly added companion animal project. The companion animal project allows members who do not have access to livestock, cats, dogs or rabbits the opportunity to show animals at the fair. The only criteria for these animals is the pet must rely on humans for its care, these animal could include turtles, fish, hedgehogs, hamsters and lizards among others. The participants are judged on the animal’s health, wellbeing, and knowledge of the animal and how to care for it, according to a South Dakota State University Extension article. Adding this project could help boost participation and the 4-H State Program Director, Donna Bittiker, anticipates equal or more participation from 4-H members than last year’s fair. At the 2016 state fair, there were 2,900 youth participants that showed 3,200 livestock, 8,300 display projects and 1,000 youth in action exhibits. Each member can show up to 10 livestock, 10 displays
Shutterstock
and an unlimited number of youth in action exhibits, according to Bittiker. Since there are many opportunities for 4-H members to participate in, they can be spotted throughout the fair, Bittiker said, as there are numerous locations throughout the fairgrounds where 4-H events and shows are held.

One of those locations is the Norby Event Center. The South Dakota 4-H program is in its second year of utilizing the Norby Event Center building. The building will be home to 4-H performing arts performances and house interactive educational opportunities. Along with the special foods contest, which in the past has been held at
Huron High School, Bittiker said. Along with new projects, traditions bring 4-H families back annually, according to Bittiker. “For many 4-H families, the state fair is a tradition where grandparents, parents, siblings, neighbors and other extended family gather to work and play together,” Bittiker said.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE FAIR

August 2017
Special events give ‘added value to their admission’
By Mercedes Lemke The Daily Republic HURON – The strongest man competition pushes its participates to the limits in six physical challenges. Afterward, the strongest man of the day will win the jackpot. The strongest man competition is one of approximately 30 special events that fair-goers will be able to participate in or enjoy watching at the 2017 South Dakota State Fair. “There is definately a lot to do on any given day,” said Candi Briley, assistant fair manager. Along with the strongest man competition there are the crowd favorites of pork butt battle and the chilli challenge. According to Briley, these events usually have seven to
eight participants, but they bring in the crowd to taste all the entries since fair-goers judge the people’s choice award. By changing categories in competitions and adding to the prize packages, the fair continually works to improve its special events, Briley said. One of those events that was updated this year is the Dakota Star event. Dakota Star is the state fair’s version of “American Idol.” When the event started, the winner received a chance to record music in a studio. However, for the last few year’s that was taken out of the prize package. This year the prize package is back thanks to a sponsorship. The winner
will receive a three-hour recording studio session with Cathouse Studio in Sioux Falls. While there are prize packages for some special events, others are traditional family fair fun. Some of these events include a diaper derby, antique tractor show and kid’s pedal pull. “Some of these things we don’t reinvent the wheel,” Briley said. “Some of these contests are popular at other fairs, so if we have the space for them and the people to help organize them, we try to give them a go and see if they turn out.” A few of those traditional events that have stood the test of time at the state fair are the performance horse
events, which includes team sorting, team penning and team roping. The fair also features the barrells gone wild, barrell racing competition and a mounted shooting event. The South Dakota Timed Event Championships are also held Saturday and Sunday. Youth ages 14-19 compete in six timed events. These events always draw a great crowd, Birley said. Through these special events Briley hopes to bring more opportunities to fair-goers. “All these special events add value to their admission on the grounds,” Briley said. “It just gives them more stuff to do and give people more opportunities to have fun at the fair.”

“Crowns and Capes Day” one of many new features at the fair By Mercedes Lemke The Daily Republic HURON – Kids will be in the spotlight on Monday during the 2017 South Dakota State Fair. The special day is being called “Crowns and Capes Day.” “Essentially the day is centered around kids,” said Candi Birley, state fair assistant manager. The day will feature princesses and superheros that the children will be able to take pictures with. Along with two new special events to the fair which include a diaper derby and a mother/ daughter, father/son look alike contest. Both events will be held Monday, Briley said. Children of all ages will also be able to help South Dakota Farm Bureau celebrate its centennial throughout the fair with special programing and “throwback games” including bobbing for apples and a pie-eating contest. There will be two new parades for families to enjoy. On Thursday, a century farm family parade will held. This parade will feature the families who will be receiving century farm awards at this

year’s fair. Friday will be the newly added golf cart parade. Two other parades will be featured at the fair are car and tractor parades, Briley said. Another featured event will be the two new horse riding competitions. A trick riding competition will be held during the South Dakota Timed Event Championship Rodeo and the new team sorting
competition will be held Wednesday. After enjoying the new events there are numerous new food options for fair-goers. “People come to the fair of course for the tradition of the fair but they also come to see what’s new and to try something new every year,” Briley said. “For the foods people look for what’s new and go try it.” Food lovers will have many new and fun foods to try at this year’s fair, Briley said. One new vendor to the fair is called “All about the Batter.” It serves cake batter and toppings in a cup. “They kinda describe themselves as everyone loves to lick the beaters now you can have it in a cup,” Briley said. For fruit lovers, there is a vendor called “Tropic Love,” which makes real fruit smoothies and serves them out of a pineapple or watermelon. Lastly, for those fair-goers who enjoy food on a stick there is “Waffle Chicks,” which bakes chicken insides of a waffle and serves it on a stick for fair-goers to enjoy, Briley said.

SD state fair attendance could take a hit amid poor ag economy By Caitlynn Peetz The Daily Republic After a steady uptick in attendance in recent years at the South Dakota State Fair, officials fear a struggling agriculture economy will deter attendees this year. With the annual fair slated for Aug. 31 through Sept. 4 in Huron, Director of the South Dakota State Fair Park Peggy Besch said lingering drought that has slammed South Dakota farmers could discourage some people from spending money to attend the fair. “While we certainly hope we would be around the same range as the past few years — last year, we had more than 211,000 — it’s hard to say,” Besch said. “A
Metro Creative
lot of fairs across the country are experiencing a decline in attendance, which comes back to that uncertainty with the ag economy.”
But Besch said she’s confident South Dakota’s state fair will remain successful in 2017. With a schedule that
Precision Soil Management combines a number of different digital databases with field verification to generate the most highly accurate soil management zones in the business. Because of these highly accurate soil management zones the soil test results and soil fertility recommendations for each soil management zone are very precise. Our unique process is based on actual soil, not an approximation of the soil from satellite data; a field attribute or a soil property. We have developed a proprietary system that allows us to tell you exactly what’s happening in your field, why and what to do.
Step 1: Mapping the Soil Management Zones Step 2: Soil Analysis Step 3: Writing the Prescription

“appeals to all ages,” Besch believes diversification in entertainment, programming and livestock events are important, and all can be found in Huron. And with new programs scheduled for Labor Day, like a truck and tractor pull and kids comedy acts, Besch said she’s excited to see if attendance will spike again this year. Typically, she said, Saturday and Sunday are the busiest days at the fair, likely because the majority of people are off work and able to enjoy full days of activities. But event organizers don’t mold the state fair’s schedule around the weekend, Besch said, and there are large-scale
events each day. On Wednesday and Thursday, bull riding will be featured in the grandstand, while Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be highlighted by country music acts Big and Rich, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Justin Moore, respectively. The fair concludes on Sunday, Aug. 4, with the truck and tractor pull. But, even with a wellbalanced schedule and array of events, there are some aspects out of anyone’s control in regards to bolstering attendance. “Weather is a huge factor, whether that be extreme heat or rain,” Besch said. “We just knock on wood every year and hope it works out.”

Heirloom recipes sought for fair competition Fairgoers will have the chance to enter a favorite family recipe in the Greater Midwest Foodways Heirloom Recipe Competition at the South Dakota State Fair in the Women’s Building on Sunday, Sept. 3. This competition seeks the best made-from-scratch family recipe suitable for a family or community dinner. To encourage participants to delve deep into their family’s culinary history, submitted recipes must be at least 50 years old. Registration forms and competition rules can be found on the South Dakota State Fair website under the special events tab. Pre-registration is encouraged. Along with the registration form, a prepared dish and recipe must be submitted for judging for the competition on

Pigeon release planned for SD State Fair
Members of the Lake City Racing Pigeon Club from Watertown and Great Plains Flyers from Sioux Falls will hold a homing pigeon release at the State Fair at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2 near the Poultry Building. These pigeons have the special ability to be released many miles from their loft to find their way home. Homing pigeon fanciers train their birds to fly against other birds in racing competitions. The pigeons are released in one location at the same time. They will fly up in the sky together in a flock to get their bearings to sense their individual homeward bound direction.
