Corinne Overweg of Kimball cites her reasoning for giving back to their community is because of their unwavering support during her tough pregnancy. She, bedridden, and Dan juggled two other small children and a small business, but their community didn’t let them fall.“Community members began coming over and putting food in our freezer and fridge. A couple ladies even cleaned my house,” Corinne recalled. “In this community, we help each other out.”

BY SD FARMERS UNION

“It was something our community needed,” Dale said.

Dale helped to inspire new traditions for the Water Festival, including canoe races, water tank races and water golf.

Corinne and Dan Overweg have contributed back to the community by building one of the largest employers in their town – a full-service automotive, truck repair and motorsports business named Overweg Repair. They give back to the community as much as they can, serving as Christian education leaders for their church, volunteering as firefighters or helping to raise funds for community scholarships, new parks, a community pool or sitting on a new medical facility committee.

JUDY ROEMICH Judy Roemich of Piedmont took over the Giving Trees project in the 90s. A Christmas-lover herself, Roemich collects around 700 gifts for 70 Piedmont and Black Hawk families each year, spending around a week wrapping all of them with members of her sewing club. Then, local firefighters chip in and load up their fire trucks for speedy delivery.

Farmers Union to honor rural volunteers at state fair

HURON – As a way of thanking four members of the agricultural community, the South Dakota Farmers Union will hold a recognition ceremony for rural volunteers during the South Dakota State Fair in Huron. For this year’s 2022 Rural Dakota Pride Recipients are Dan and Corinne Overweg, Dale Swenson, Judy Roemich and Mary Jacobs.

“It just warms my heart when we deliver gifts to families and I see their childrens’ eyes light up,” Roemich

CORINNE AND DAN OVERWEG

DALE SWENSON Dale Swenson of Woonsocket has worked with other community volunteers to ensure that some traditions stay traditions, like the community Water Festival, the Christmas Nativity scene on Woonsocket’s Lake Prior Island, as well as Meals on Wheels. When the previous planning committee dissolved in 1984, Dale and other community members stepped up to preserve the more than a century old tradition of the Water Festival, a Fourth of July celebration that brought in people from all over the country.

“I think this small town has been the best place to raise our kids,” Corinne said. “Seeing this community grow and thrive and be the place where young families want to live – this is why we give back.”

“This is our way to thank the many rural citizens who work behind the scenes to take care of citizens in need and keep community traditions alive,” said Karla Hofhenke, Executive Director of South Dakota Farmers Union.

Concerts will be held both at the Grandstand stage with musicians like Stone Temple Pilots, Josh Turner and The Band Perry performing live. She has made lifelong friends throughout the process and even gets a fancy volunteer title – Wish Granter.“Awish gives a kid the chance to be a kid again,” Jacobs said. “They can forget about the doctors, forget about the lab coats and do something they want to do more than anything.”

A variety of showings will be happening all weekend long starting Wednesday, including 4-H livestock competitions, dog and companion animal shows, Youth-In-Action and other display exhibits, including an antique farm machinery display. These volunteers will be recognized with the Farmers Union Rural Dakota Pride award during Farmers Union Day beginning at 12:45.

Another new addition: a guest artist, Pam Evenson. Evenson will be hosting a crafting with wool activity on Friday in the Arts and Education building from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.“It’s just really great to see the kids come in and have a great time, and it’s nice to provide the experience of coming to the fair that some kids might not have an opportunity for,” Candi Briley said. “They write thank you cards, and those are really great – it’s nice to see the experience through their eyes.”Briley went on to say that the entire experience is of no cost to the kids or to schools. Lunch is provided for children via sponsors and it’s completely free to participate in.

Briley described the two-day, jam-packed event with excitement, emphasizing all the activities the Largest Classroom has to offer.

HURON – As the State Fair quickly approaches, Candi Briley, South Dakota’s Largest Classroom event coordinator, prepares for upwards of 700 children participating in the fair’s 18-activity fair field trip. “Largest classroom is where we invite both public and private schools to attend the fair on either Thursday or Friday,” Briley said. “It gives kids the opportunity to participate in a variety of different activities that they might not otherwise be exposed to in a classroom setting.”

The 2022 South Dakota State Fair opens on Wednesday, August 31, with South Dakota’s Largest Classroom kicking off its activities the following day, starting at 9 a.m. The grounds will be open all day until 8 p.m. x

“We have suggested programming, a variety of shoes and educational pieces that run throughout the day,” Briley explained. “We have what we call ‘edu-tainment’ that they can watch while they eat lunch.”This year, the Largest Classroom welcomes a few new additions to their fun-based learning curriculum, including Nature Nick’s Animal Adventures, Circus Science Spectacular and the South Dakota Corn Amazing Ag Adventures trailer – “an educational experience with corn in a fun way,” Briley said.

Largest Classroom includes crafting with wool

Due to the pandemic, the project took a major hit in funding and costs, according to White, have been overrun.“Weare having to look for a little more funding,” White said. “We had to downsize the building due to labor shortages with our contractors, finding state certified contractors and such and, of course, COVID.”

JIM WHITE

Despite all this, however, White said, on a more positive note, “We’ll still have the two arenas from the original blueprints, so we’ll be able to hold national arena shows and such.”

We’re very pleased with how it’s going and how supportive the community has been in the process..

White adds that, once completed, the Dex building will seat approximately 5,000 people. The Dex blueprints include two full-sized, multipurpose equestrian arenas that double as 1,700 cattle stalls. The enclosed space will be heated for year-round usage with an added ventilation system to ensure proper air movement, as well as concessions, restrooms, and access points for water and electricity for ease of access for livestock and equestrianConstructionshows.will continue through next summer, when White hopes to kick off the 2023 State Fair with the grand opening of the Dex. “We’re really excited about this project and we can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

DEX BUILDING STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION, NOT YET READY FOR FAIR

BY CASSIE WILLIAMS Mitchell Republic HURON – Construction at the DEX at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds is underway but will not be open in time for the 2022 South Dakota State Fair. The approximately 150,000-squarefoot livestock and equestrian facility broke ground earlier this year. Due to setbacks, however, the Dex building will remain under construction for another estimated ten to twelve months.“Discover the Dex” Committee Chairman, Jim White, said the construction crew is estimating a tentative completion date by August 2023. “We’re hopeful that it’ll be done in time for next year’s fair,” White said. The Dex building will replace what was once the Open Class Beef Complex, a 96,000 square foot building that was destroyed in a fire in the fall of 2020. It was demolished in December 2020, followed quickly by new project design efforts in the spring of 2021. A groundbreaking ceremony was held during the 2021 State Fair with the hopes that it would be completed the following summer. Currently, crews are in the midst of putting down footings and internal plumbing“COVID-19fixtures.putus a little behind schedule. Contractors were put on a twelve to fifteen month pause,” White said. “But we’re very pleased with how it’s going and how supportive the community has been in the process.”

SD PUBLIC COMMISSIONUTILITIES

HURON – The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission will be holding a PUC booth at the 2022 State Fair in the hopes of encouraging conversation between producers selling grain and the commission’s warehouse staff.

“As PUC commissioners, we know how important our regulatory role is in helping protect producers. Our grain warehouse staff take this role very seriously and work hard, but they can’t do it alone,” PUC Vice Chairperson Kristie Fiegen commented. “Producer participation is vital to making the process work. If producers have questions about selling grain or concerns about slow pay or even the possibility of no pay from a company, PUC inspectors want to know.”

PUC staff conduct regular on-site inspections of licensed facilities to analyze the financial condition of grain warehouses and grain buyers. Inspectors review items such as daily position reports, settlement sheets and warehouse“Additionalreceipts.grain storage reports and balance sheets are also submitted regularly for review to help ensure facilities have the level of bond coverage required by state statute and are operating within all other requirements of state law. It is also important that the grain buyer and grain warehouse facility you are doing business with is licensed by the PUC,” explained PUC Commissioner Gary Hanson. In 2021, the PUC performed 492 inspections at 351 licensed facilities and recently issued 366 licenses to 192 Class A and Class B grain buyers, and statelicensed and federally licensed grain warehouse facilities.
