PARKSTON — The Parkston High School wrestling team knows the target on its back grows larger every year. In 2014-15, the Trojans continued their domination of Class B wrestling, winning their third consecutive state championship. The expectations are nothing less for Parkston this year, with the Trojans setting their eyes on a four-peat. “Anybody that’s not Parkston, we look to beat,” Parkston head coach James Boehmer said. “We look out for our own. We respect you and we appreciate you being a South Dakota wrestler, but if you don’t have Parkston across your chest, you’re looking to stop us from our goal and all our hard work we put in that room. Wrestling is too grueling of a sport to put in the work you do only to have someone throw you off track. We’re looking to perform our best this season.” The Trojans will be led by junior Blake Bietz — who won the state championship in the 145-pound weight class last season — as he hopes for his second straight individual state championship. “It’s definitely my top goal,” Bietz said. “Every day you learn something new in practice, but you can always use that experience you earned last year to guide you. This year, it’s going to take a lot of hard work and dedication.” Boehmer said Bietz might be one of the most competitive wrestlers he has, which leads to a boatload of wins for him on the mat. “Blake works hard at everything,” Boehmer said. “He doesn’t like to lose a sprint, heck, he doesn’t like to even lose a game of tic-tac-toe. ... He’s on track to being one of the most decorated and successful wrestlers at Parkston. We hold a strong tradition at Parkston, so to put your name down as one of the best Parkston wrestlers ever, I think that’s enough motivation to keep yourself going.” But Parkston won’t have the numbers it did last year, as the Trojans are down to 20 wrestlers compared to the 26 wrestlers on the roster last season. What’s more, the Trojans only have two seventh-graders, two eighth-graders and two freshmen out for wrestling this season. “We’ve been fortunate here the last six to 10 years to have really good numbers,” Boehmer said. “It’s a small town and every small town goes through it. You have to really appreciate it when you do have the numbers and you have to work at it when the numbers aren’t there.” While the Trojans lack depth, they do boast a plethora of talented middleweight wrestlers. Austin Ripp (170), Kyler Holzbauer (145), Logan Mahoney (126), Dawson Semmler (152), Luke Bietz (160) and Blake Bietz (152) will all be featured in the Parkston rotation. Each of those wrestlers has placed at state at least once. “The challenge of pulling off the fourpeat is competing against everyone else in the state,” Boehmer said. “We did lose a good group of six seniors, but we have a good group coming through now. It’s a challenge to win a state championship every year, I think the main challenge is keeping the kids in the room motivated.” Boehmer said there’s a lot of competition to be the “top dog” in Class B, as Parkston has been for the last three season. Those challenges could come from Canton, Bon Homme/Scotland or Philip, as main contenders. “Canton has been always looking to knock us off the last couple years, but now I think it’s our year to knock Canton off. Bon Homme is right on our back door, they’re also going to be tough.”

Kernels look for third straight state title Defending AA champions have just 11 team members By MARCUS TRAXLER The Daily Republic

The Mitchell Kernels gymnastics team will be small in size for the 2015-16 season, with just 11 varsity members. But as the two-time defending state team champions in Class AA, they also expect themselves to be championship contenders. Mitchell coach Audra Rew said her team is made up of gymnasts that have been driven to succeed and reach the next goal since they were young. She’s not worried about having to motivate her team in pursuit for a third straight state championship. “Gymnastics itself is a sport where there’s always something out there that you can strive for,” she said. “There’s always another skill to learn and you never quite attain a perfect. There’s always something. Usually these kids are trained from the time that they’re young that there’s always more.” The team will be lean on its senior leadership from Quinci Herll and Emily Prill, both of whom were key pieces for the Kernels in the 2015 championship run, which was the fourth in school history. In the individual all-around competition a year ago, Herll finished third and Prill finished ninth at the state meet. “They’ve been around the block,” Rew said. “They’re calm and confident. I don’t have to worry about them doubting themselves but the rest of the team can always use some of that confidence.” Herll is among those who is well aware of the Kernels’ current status, undefeated in the last two seasons and haven’t lost a meet since December 2014. “It’s pressure because we know how good we’ve been and we know we haven’t lost in two years, so we don’t want to be the ones that let that happen this year,” she said. “It’s good pressure to keep that streak going.” Herll said the smaller team means that everyone counts a little bit more and injuries would pose a bigger threat to the team’s overall success. “At the same time, it makes us all work a

little bit harder because everyone counts,” she said. “We know everyone has to be performing at their best if we’re going to reach our goals.” Prill said team chemistry shouldn’t be much of an issue and Rew noted that the offseason workouts usually include youth gymnasts and the high schoolers, meaning the transition is a bit easier than it might be in other sports. “We all bond together really well and it makes those meets just that much more fun when you’re performing well with your friends,” said Prill. Rew said she would expect Rapid City Stevens to be right there with the Kernels

at season’s end, given that they return most of their team and finished second a year ago. The Kernels’ strengths are currently flipped, Rew said. She noted that the Kernels look good in the floor exercise but need improvement on the bars, where Mitchell has been notoriously strong. That’s not a place of concern, Rew said. “I have little doubts, along with the confidence and competition, we’ll get back up there,” she said of the bars. The Kernels’ first home meet is Dec. 18-19, when they host the Jill McCormick Invitational. The state meet is Feb. 12-13 at the Swiftel Center in Brookings.

Martin proves pivotal for Tiger men By GARRICK HODGE The Daily Republic

Last season, Tate Martin was counted on to be a distributor for the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team. While the point guard averaged 3.62 assists per game in DWU’s record breaking 32-5 season, he was looked at as a secondary scoring option behind players such as AllAmerican Jalen Voss and averaged 2.5 points per game in 37 games. But after seeing his role expand this season, Martin has arguably become the Tigers’ most irreplaceable player. Earlier in the season, Martin was second in the nation in shooting percentage, shooting an astounding 71 percent from the floor (59 percent from three-point range) and third in the nation in assists. What’s more, the Mitchell native has increased his scoring output to 14.1 points per game and grabs four rebounds per contest. “With the makeup of our team the last couple of years he was really filling a role that worked really well for us,” DWU head coach Matt Wilber said. “He was always surrounded by three and a lot of times four scorers. He did a great

job of distributing the ball, and he’s still doing that. He’s just taking on a primary and more aggressive role, and that’s by design. He doesn’t just want to be a pass-first point guard, he wants to force other teams to guard him. We’re going to keep going to him and keep allowing him to have that kind of freedom.” With 60 percent of DWU’s point production from last year gone to graduation, Wilber said he knew he was going to have to attempt to fill those voids with other players on the roster. Martin has become one of those options, because he knows his teammates are confident he can get the job done. “Nothing’s really changed (in my approach), but my teammates have confidence in me and that’s all it is,” Martin said. “When they’re confident in me, I’m confident in scoring. Scoring is all about confidence, and when they want me to do that it makes it easy.” The 5-foot11, red-

opportunity, our guys just need to spend more minutes together and mesh well.”

shirt-junior has also been able to excel for the Tigers because he hasn’t been asked to carry the load by himself. After nine games in, DWU could have a solid argument of saying it has the best backcourt in the Great Plains Athletic Conference with Martin, senior guard Jade Miller (19.9 points, 4.7 rebounds per game while shooting 54 percent from the floor) and senior guard Trae Bergh (20.9 points per game while shooting 51 percent from the floor). “That’s the beauty of basketball,” Wilber said. “You don’t know what the exact reason is for things happening the way they do, but for sure that’s a huge factor. There’s a lot of guys that have to be guarded on the floor, you can’t just key on one of them. If we’re going to have a chance to have a really good year, we’re going to have to have a balanced scoring attack. I think we’ll have that

WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW THE DAILY REPUBLIC DECEMBER 2015

New year, new expectations for Kernel girls By GARRICK HODGE The Daily Republic

Last season is already in the rearview mirror for the Mitchell High School girls basketball team. After reaching the state championship for three consecutive years, the Kernels failed to make the state tournament in 2014-15 with a 6-16 season. But with four players returning with experience — Erin Farnham, Brenna Morgan, Jessi Hinker and Jenna Weich — head coach Wes Morgan said the Kernels could be a much improved team. “This should be a fun year and we should really improve all the way through the season,” Morgan said. “Right now, we’re trying to find out what our 6-10 (rotation) is. “We have size and some speed, we just have to find some shooters. And they’re there, they just need to get some confidence.” Offensively, the Kernels will rely on Farnham — a 5-foot-6 senior guard — and Weich — a 5-foot-11 junior forward — for point production. “I think our scoring is going to be more balanced,” Morgan said. “Erin is going to have to shoot the ball, and she’s really stepping up in that spot right now. Jenna Weich also has to be a leader offensively. When Jenna and Erin are on the floor, it gives us a calming effect. We need to build around those two, and that’s the direction we’re going.”

Morgan said the Kernels will experiment with different rotations the first few games to “see what kids work and which ones need to develop.” As one of the floor generals for the Kernels, Farnham said she liked what her teammates bring to the table. “We have a lot of players that are versatile,” Farnham said. “This entire team is versatile and it’s a whole new team from last year. I’m excited to see what we can do.” The first few games could be

essential for the Kernels’ development. Morgan said one of the reasons the Kernels had been successful for so many years before last year was the players learned how to earn victories from playing in games. “I think winning and losing is learned. I want to get that learned upfront,” Morgan said. “We’ve taken this program from a losing program to a winning program, and had a little stumble there last year. I want to get it going in the right direction again.”

Havlik said the team needs to have a philosophy of getting as many wrestlers as possible to the state podium. Finishing the season at the top is a goal of his and his team. “We’ve lost a lot and we’re pretty young,” he said. “We’re trying to work on the basics and perfect them. We want to get really good at that, even if it means we’re not adding a lot of new things. It’s about mastery and getting ourselves conditioned.” Mitchell’s first home meet of the season is Dec. 22 vs. Aberdeen Central and the Kernels host the annual Jerry Opbroek Invitational Jan. 16 at Mitchell High School. state tournament a year ago. The bar has been raised in recent years by the Kernels, who have had at least seven state qualifiers in each season since 2013. Head coach Travis Carpenter said he expects growing pains with a younger roster, but has little doubt that can pay off in the long run. “It’s going to be one of those things where there’s going to be growing pains, but I’ve got a bunch of young guys that are working hard and basically doing everything I’m asking,” he said. “That’s all we want right now.” Carpenter said most of the freshmen and sophomores have gotten mat time and have varsity experience, even if it’s just a few matches.

There will be plenty of new faces on the court for the Mitchell High School boys basketball team this season. After finishing with a 9-13 record and missing the state tournament for the third consecutive year, the 2015-16 Kernels “will be working from scratch”. Mitchell lost six seniors, including Beau Brown — who averaged 21.2 points per game and is now on the South Dakota State University men’s basketball team. While MHS head coach Erik Skoglund said his team will go through a “steep learning curve,” the third-year coach is confident his team is up for the challenge. “We have about 10 points per game returning,” Skoglund said. “It doesn’t look great on paper, but we are going to be an exciting team on the floor. Teams are going to be unprepared for the type of athlete, the type of discipline and the type of ball movement that we’re going to have. These guys have totally bought in and the open man is going to get the ball.” Skoglund said the team is looking on improving defensively. “There’s not many new things that we’ll be putting in, but one thing we have to be better at is our half court defense,” Skoglund said. “We’re working on our positioning technique and anticipation down on the defensive end.” Four seniors and seven juniors will see a majority

of the playing time for the Kernels, with Gray Determan providing the most varsity experience out of the group. Determan averaged four points a game and shot 52 percent inside the arc last year. “We will have a lot height this year,” said Determan, noting seniors Wyatt Smith (6-foot-7) and Mitch Price (6-foot7) will have bigger roles with the Kernels this year. “We’re working a lot on defense so far, especially on help defense and stopping the dribble-drive.” Kyle Jamison will be the Kernels’ fourth senior, while juniors Connor Morgan, Jed Schmidt, Elijah Pommer, Reed Overweg, Sam Mock, Ryland DeVries and Cody Reichelt could all see the floor for Mitchell. “We’ve had great practices and the seniors know they need to lead this group,” said Skoglund, who added Aberdeen Central, Watertown, Yankton and Pierre will be teams to beat in the Eastern South Dakota Conference. “We’ll have so many underclassmen that are going to see time on the varsity floor and our junior class has come a long ways.” One player the Kernels will be missing this season is Kanin Nelson, who was a two-year starter for Mitchell as a sophomore and junior. Nelson is graduating high school early to join South Dakota State University and prepare for his collegiate football career.

THE DAILY REPUBLIC WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW DECEMBER 2015

Marlins boys learning the ropes By GARRICK HODGE The Daily Republic

It’s going to take time for the Mitchell Marlins boys hockey team to gel on the ice. The Marlins head into the 2015 season after losing their top four scorers from a year ago. “We did lose a lot of guys, but we also return a lot too,” Marlins forward Jesse Grosdidier said. “The guys that are back are definitely going to be big for us this year.” Grosdidier (eight goals and 10 assists last year) and Spencer Neugebauer (nine goals and 14 assists in 2014) will have to replace the scoring production of Jacob Cersosimo (32 goals, 21 assists), Jacob Rice (22 assists, 15 goals), Jordan Grosdidier (12 goals, 22 assists) and Jacob Thill (20 goals, 14 assists). “We hope to make it back to the state tournament again,” Grosdidier said. “I hope we can compete a little more this year and stick with the top leaders of the state.” In the Marlins’ first two contests against Oahe, Mitchell was defeated 12-1 and 11-1. “We were missing five or six guys, so we had to have eight or nine first year guys play in those,” Marlins first-year head coach

Chris Tronnes said. “They figured out the quickness of the game and the speed, and that’s what it’s all about. They weren’t the scores we wanted, but we learned a lot by playing those games.” Tronnes added the Marlins haven’t had much practice time as a full team because some players from the Mitchell football team weren’t available until their season was over. “We’re young, and we’ve only just been able to have practice will a full team since the football guys just got back,” Tronnes said. “We’ve been working pretty heavy with our lines trying to figure out our chemistry and stuff. It’ll be a learning curve, so we’ll need a few more games to figure it out. But they’ll come around after they start picking it up in practice.” Defensively, the Marlins will rely on defensemen Matt Muth, Kyle Biggerstaff and Bryce Geraets to keep opposing team’s scoring attacks off bay. As for the Marlins’ goalie, Joshua Loecker returns after playing in 17 games last year while recording a 87 percent save percentage and 77 saves. Loecker was 3-0 in the games he started last season.

Teams, events and players to keep an eye on this winter By The Daily Republic Sports Staff

Winter is a unique time of year in South Dakota. One day it can be 50 degrees and sunny, the next day it can be 10 degrees, cloudy with a howling wind that keeps people locked indoors like hibernating bears. But inside the gyms, rinks and arenas of this state, there will be plenty of prep and college sports to follow throughout our region. Despite what kind of weather the winter season may present The Daily Republic sports staff put together a list of teams, events and players to watch this winter season.

Area teams to watch • DWU basketball teams

The Corn Palace really gets rocking when both the Dakota Wesleyan University women’s and men’s basketball teams are hosting a doubleheader. Both teams are nationally ranked in the NAIA Top 25 coaches poll. This year, the Tiger women have raced out to a 11-1 start and are averaging 83.1 points per game. Kristin Sabers and Erica Herrold have provided the Tigers with a one-two punch as both players are averaging 16.2 and 15.8 points per game, respectively. Notable games: 1/13: DWU vs. Morningside, 6 p.m at the Corn Palace; 1/20: DWU vs. Briar Cliff 6 p.m. at the Corn Palace; 2/20: DWU vs. Hastings, 2 p.m. at the Corn Palace.

The DWU men — last year’s NAIA National Tournament runner-up — are 9-4 this season and average 93.6 points per game. Trae Bergh is averaging 21.5 points per game for the Tigers, while Jade Miller is averaging 20.1 points per game. Garrick Hodge/Republic

Marlin girls team working on communication this season By GARRICK HODGE The Daily Republic

Mitchell Marlins second-year head coach Cody Denne kept blowing his whistle during a preseason hockey practice. During passing drills, Denne kept stressing that the Marlins’ chemistry wasn’t where it needed to be before the season opener earlier this year. “We’re lacking communication right now,” Denne said. “We’re not playing as a team and we need to get more focused on what we need to accomplish this season.” Working on finding where other players are on the ice isn’t anything new to the Marlins, though. “I’m hoping that we’re more team players this year,” Marlins junior forward Emily Spates said. “I’m hoping we’re better communicating on the ice, because last year we didn’t really do that well. I think this year we really improved on being a team altogether and not having so much drama.” Mitchell will try to build off an 11-12 record a season ago without two of its tops scorers from 2014. The Marlins will miss Kylie Barington, who accumulated 56 points (36 goals, 20 assists) last season and Jacey Brunsen (13

goals and 15 assists for 28 points) for their scoring presence. Grace Halvorson (five goals, four assists for nine points in 2014), Faith Halvorson (two goals and three assists for five points last year), Kaihlen Smith (seven goals, four assists for 11 points) and Madison Arnold (12 goals, six assists for 18 points) will be asked to pick up the scoring for Mitchell. “Offensively, we’ve been working on picking up our spots and where to be on the ice,” Denne said. “Position is key. We need to know when to move, when to change lanes and stuff like that instead of driving to the same lane all the time.” Defensively, Bailey Hohn (six assists and four goals for 10 points in 2014), Shannen Koch, Maggie Dailey and Sarah Zimmerman each hope to make Marlins goalie Katelyn Uithoven’s life easier. “I hope we can win a banner this year,” Hohn said. “I think we will have a shot to win some games.” Meanwhile, Uithoven — the lone goalie on the Marlins’ roster — returns for her third year in the net after saving 83 percent of shots against her and after recording 123 saves in 2014. “She’s rock solid,” Denne said. “I’m really confident in her in the net.”

Notable games: 12/28: DWU vs. Florida National, 9:30 p.m. at the Corn Palace; 1/24: DWU vs. Midland University 4 p.m. at the Corn Palace.

• Mitchell gymnastics

The two-time defending state team champions in Class AA expect to be championship contenders once again this season. Mitchell coach Audra Rew pushes this year’s team of 11 varsity members led by seniors Quinci Herll and Emily Prill, who finished third and ninth, respectively, at last year’s state meet. The team hasn’t lost a meet since December 2014 and provide the state’s top gymnastics. The Kernels’ first home meet is Dec. 18-19, when they host the Jill McCormick Invitational. Mitchell will look to complete the three-peat at the state meet Feb. 12-13 at the Swiftel Center in Brookings.

• Parkston wrestling

South Dakota wrestling has gone through the town of Parkston the past three years. The Trojans continued their domination of Class B wrestling, winning their third consecutive state championship last year and this winter the expectations are nothing less for Parkston this year, with the Trojans setting their eyes on a four-peat. The Trojans will be led by junior Blake Bietz — who won the state championship in the 145-pound weight class last season — as he hopes for his second straight individual state championship. Catch the Trojans on the mat throughout the season as they compete at the Floyd Farrand Tournament in Sioux Falls on Dec. 28, the Mid Dakota Monster on Jan. 8 in Presho, the Jerry Opbroek Invite on Jan. 16 in Mitchell and the Little B on Jan. 23 in Parkston.

• Class B basketball

Garrick Hodge/Republic

wR EsT LiN G

• Class A basketball

Region 5A highlights Class A boys and girls basketball with Mount Vernon/ Plankinton, McCook Central/Montrose, Bon Homme, Wagner and Parkston all competing throughout the season. The Titans earned both state tournament berths last year with the MV/P girls finishing third and the Titan boys taking eighth place. Class A features future South Dakota State women’s basketball player Megan Bultsma, who returns to lead the Titan girls towards a state championship, while McCook Central/ Montrose’s Morgan Koepsell returns to lead the Fighting Cougars after averaging 20.1 points, 10.1 rebounds and 5.2 blocks as a freshman last year. On the boys side, Winner returns after a third-place finish at the state tournament last year, while Tate Deinert will look to lead the Mount Vernon/ Plankinton boys to another state tournament appearance. The Class A seasons conclude with the girls state tournament in Watertown and the boys in Rapid City.

Area events to watch • Mid-Dakota Monster

For wrestling fans, it doesn’t get much better than the Mid-Dakota Monster. The 27-team tournament connects teams from the east and west in a fullday of wrestling in the Lyman High School gym in Presho. Standing room only as teams that don’t meet often on the mat cross paths at one of small town South Dakota’s finest sporting events. Catch the action on Jan. 9 in Presho.

• Hanson Classic

Held at the World’s Only Corn Palace, the Hanson Classic is a two-weekend affair for girls (Jan. 16) and boys basketball (Jan. 23). While the matchups aren’t determined until a later date (the goal is for schools participating in the Hanson Classic to be aligned with teams that are going to be the most evenly matched based off their regular-season performances). The Hanson Classic draws top teams from across the region and showcases eight games on a single day giving fans plenty of basketball in one day. Mark your calendars for two Saturday’s in January full of basketball.

• Jerry Opbroek Invite

One of the area’s best wrestling meets that meshes both Class B and Class A wrestlers, the Jerry Opbroek Invite provides a great wrestling atmosphere at the Mitchell High School gym. Last year the annual event hosted 69 wrestlers that were ranked in the top 12 in the state. The event usually showcases five teams in Class A and five teams in Class B and will be held on Jan. 16.

• Little B

One of the season’s last wrestling meets before region competitions, Parkston’s Little B tournament showcases some of South Dakota’s best talent in Class B wrestling. Hosted by the Trojans, who have won the past three Class B state championships, the Little B may not be the biggest wrestling meet but it still showcases South Dakota talent. This year, the tournament is held on Jan. 23.

• Mike Miller Classic

The Mike Miller Classic showcases some of the best high school basketball in the United States. This year — the event’s sixth — will include four college basketball teams, including Dakota Wesleyan University. The Classic is scheduled for Dec. 27 and 28 and will include 19 high school and college teams from nine states playing in 16 games. Ten of those games will be played at The Corn Palace in Mitchell. Headlined by last year’s Class B boys state champions — the Hanson Beavers — and last year’s girls state champions — the Ethan Rustlers — their is multiple teams worth checking out this season. Joining the Beavers as teams to look out for in Class B will be Sanborn Central/Woonsocket and Corsica-Stickney. Both teams won their District last year only to fall one game short of the state tournament. On the girls side, Hanson and Sanborn Central/Woonsocket join Ethan as top area teams in Class B. The Beavers are highlighted by future Dakota Wesleyan commit Kynedi Cheeseman, while the Blackhawks’ Myah Selland returns for her junior season after being named

The Daily Republic’s women’s basketball player of the year as a sophomore. Class B is known to be one of the most competitive classes in South Dakota high school basketball and teams emerge throughout the season. The Class B boys state tournament will conclude in Aberdeen, while the girls state tournament will be held in Huron.

• The Summit League basketball tournament

The Summit League basketball tournament has become one of South Dakota’s most anticipated sporting events. Held in Sioux Falls for the past seven years, the winner of both the men’s and women’s tournaments earns a berth to the NCAA Tournament. The combination of competitive South Dakota State and South Dakota men’s and women’s teams and Sioux Falls’ new Denny Sanford Premier Center, the tournament is a must see in March. This year’s tournament is March 5-8 in Sioux Falls.

Players to watch

looks to lead the Blackhawks to a state tournament appearance after the team fell short to Wolsey-Wessington in the district championship last year.

• Eli Van Roekel

A 6-foot point guard for CorsicaStickney, Van Roekel had a breakout season as a junior averaging 15 points and 3.2 assists per game. He helped lead the Jaguars to a district championship, but the team fell short to Gregory in the region championship.

Girls basketball • Myah Selland

The reigning Daily Republic player of the year, Selland returns for her junior season with the Blackhawks. The 6-foot-2 guard has already surpassed 1,000 career points and she recorded 12 double-doubles and one triple-double as a sophomore. She averaged 21 points, 10.2 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 3.3 steals and 1.7 blocks per game for the Blackhawks, who will be eager to return to the state tournament as falling one game short last year.

• Megan Bultsma

Mount Vernon/Plankinton’s Megan Bultsma, a 6-foot-3 center, helped the Titans to a third-place finish at the Class A state tournament last year. The South Dakota State University commit averaged 15.7 points and 8.1 rebounds in her junior season and will look to push the Titans farther this year.

Kur, Cooper expected to play big role for Golden Eagle boys By GARRICK HODGE The Daily Republic

If the Mitchell Christian boys basketball team is going to compete for a district championship this season, it will need big contributions from its seniors. “We’ll have a competitive team like we always do,” head coach Dennis Martin said. “We’re using some younger kids paired with the talent of our seniors. We’re going to put up some wins and play to the best of our ability.” Senior 6-foot-10 center Majok Kur is expected to lead the Golden Eagles’ frontcourt and be a dominating post presence inside. “Obviously, he’s going to touch the ball a lot for us in the post,” Martin said. “It’ll generate other things for the four other guys on the floor. His passing ability and low post improvement give us a big time chance down there. We expect big things from Majok offensively and defensively.” Kur made big strides in his development throughout the year, and came through for the Golden Eagles in their District 8B contest against Bridgewater-Emery with 20

points (going 9-of-10 from the floor) and 11 rebounds. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for Mitchell Christian as the Golden Eagles ended their 2014-15 season at 7-14 with a 59-44 loss to the Huskies. “Majok is looking forward to this opportunity for this year. He’s been working hard all summer and attended a lot of basketball camps,” Martin said. “We’ll need some big things from him this year.” Another key player for the Golden Eagles is three-year starter Ethan Cooper, who will play both low and high for Mitchell Christian. “We’ll look to Ethan Cooper a lot this year for the experience he brings,” Martin said. “He’s very gifted athletically and brings a lot of leadership as a senior.” Other key contributors for Mitchell Christian includes Zach Bosworth, a 5-foot10 junior guard, and Alec Nelson, a 6-foot freshman point guard. With several key pieces returning from Mitchell Christian’s core last season, Martin said his expectations are slightly raised for the 2015-16 season.

• Morgan Koepsell

As a freshman, McCook Central/ Montrose’s Morgan Koepsell had a breakout season, averaging 20.6 points, 9.3 rebounds and 5.2 blocks per game. The 6-foot-1 freshman center led the Fighting Cougars to a 20-3 record last year.

• Quinci Herll

• Majok Kur

A 6-foot-10 senior center for Mitchell Christian, Majok Kur averaged a double-double per game for the Golden Eagles as a junior. “Obviously, he’s going to touch the ball a lot for us in the post,” MCS head coach Dennis Martin said. “Majok is looking forward to this opportunity for this year. He’s been working hard all summer and attended a lot of basketball camps.”

• Tucker Kingsbury

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket’s point guard Tucker Kingsbury averaged 9.33 points and 6.6 assists per game during his junior season. The 6-foot-1 senior

One of the top gymnasts in the state, Quinci Herll placed third in the individual all-around competition at the state meet last year. Herll has been a key piece in Mitchell’s back-to-back state championship wins.

Inexperienced Mitchell Christian hoping to take step in right direction By GARRICK HODGE The Daily Republic

It will take time for the Mitchell Christian girls basketball team to find its stride in the 2015-16 season. But that hasn’t stopped head coach Jackie Van Laecken from getting excited about her team’s potential. “We have two seniors coming back this season will bring some strength and experience to our team,” Van Laecken said. “The girls are coming off a great volleyball season, which really transfers over to basketball. We’re really excited about our inside and outside game this year. We’ve got a lot of good outside shooters this year, and we have a strong post presence with Emily Reynen.” Reynen, a 5-foot-10 senior forward, will be counted on to provide a consistent scoring effort for the Golden Eagles. “Emily is a fantastic athlete and is very humble about it,” Van Laecken said. “We will definitely rely on her for points. We’ll also need contributions from her defensively, especially rebounding.” Coming off an injury-plagued 5-16 season,

the Golden Eagles will benefit from the return of 5-foot-11 junior Abbie Reynen, who missed last season with a torn ACL. Offensively, guards Kelsey Thompson and Taylor Lepke will be counted on to make shots from the perimeter, while Alyson Vander Pol, Carlie Vander Pol and Colette Haag are the Golden Eagles’ go-to players for mid-range shots. “We have a lot of growing to do because it’s a new group together with only two returning starters,” Van Laecken said. “It’s been fun so far, and I’m excited to see where they go. It’ll probably take a few games to see some progress with them, but they’re all friends and in a small school like this it’s easier when you know each other’s strengths and weaknesses.” Van Laecken added the Golden Eagles have been focused on improving their passing game, which she said has already proved from last year. “We want to be growing around district time and stay healthy this season,” she said. “We didn’t have a healthy season last year, so if we can do that, hopefully we’ll go further in districts this year.”

We have a roster of zero seniors, but bring back some experience at the guard spots. We will be relying on players with limited experience but must learn and grow together. Some of the younger guys

are excited to get the season started. We return all five starters from last year and are looking for some help off the bench this year. With hard work and a little time to work together we hope to compete with the favorites in the district. The district will be solid with Canistota leading the way.

Bohlmann, 9, 6’2”, F; Logan Klaudt, 9, 5’9”, G; Kyle Munkvold, 9, 6’3”, F. Coach’s comments: We will be an inexperienced team that is looking to replace all five starters from a year ago. We graduated four seniors and lost a player to a torn ACL. Our new lineup has been working hard and they are eager to show what they can do. We believe our strengths will be our defense and rebounding. We will need to focus on improving each game as we gain experience. If we can do that, I think this group has potential to have a great year.

will return several starters from last years learn that will provide some leadership to our underclassmen. We will not be very big, but will be athletic enough to compete on both ends on the floor. We will need our upper classmen to pick up their scoring role until some of our underclassmen gain some experience. We will look to be a team that will get better every time we step on the court and be a team that others will not want to play by tournament time.

Our young players will really have to step up under the leadership of our returning players. I think we will surprise some that have written this off as a rebuilding year. We are going to enter each game with a drive and passion that we can succeed.

Tiger wrestling looking to build foundation By ERIC MAYER The Daily Republic

After going through three different head coaches in as many years, the Dakota Wesleyan University wrestling team is looking to build a foundation for the future during the 2015 season. DWU head coach Nick Hutcheson, a former DWU wrestler and graduate assistant, said the team is looking develop throughout the season. “We have a good foundation of young wrestlers, so in the next four years we should continue to get better and deeper as a program,” Hutcheson said. “They just need to take it a day at a time and look at practice as a time to get better, rather than just something that they have to do.” Hutcheson took over the program in September and said he’s settled into his position as the Tigers’ head coach. “At first it was pretty hectic but after the first month, I got the hang of it,” said Hutcheson, who took over for Boomer Fechko in September. “Things are going pretty good now.”

The Tigers (0-4) have 20 wrestlers on the roster for the 2015 season. Hutcheson pointed out 12 wrestlers are underclassmen and said the focus of improvement is the team’s main goal. “We’re really young, so we have a lot of inexperience but the nice thing about that is we know there is going to be improvement from today to tomorrow,” Hutcheson said. “The guys are good at knowing there’s a lot to learn and overall they just have positive attitudes and work hard. There should be a lot of improvement from now until regions.” Hutcheson said seniors Trever DeVestern, Jade Hoisington, Jacob Devine and junior Will Seydel as leaders for the Tigers this season. DeVestern is in his fifth season as a Tiger wrestler. His senior season last year was cut short due to injury and the California native decided to return for another season. “He sets a good example as far as work ethic,” Hutcheson said. “He does the right things and shows younger wrestlers

how to eat right as well.” DeVerstern, currently ranked fourth in the NAIA rankings at 165 pounds, is second in wins in DWU history with a record of 99-27. He is only six wins behind DWU all-time win leader Jordan Harer and Hutcheson said if DeVestern stays healthy, he could have a special season for the Tigers. “He’s looked good so far,” said Hutcheson, who added DeVestern is battling a small ankle injury of late. “If he wrestles the way he is capable of, there’s no reason he can’t make it to the finals.” Keeping DeVestern and the rest of the team healthy is also a high priority for the Tigers this season. The wrestling season is four months long with plenty of physical contact, so staying healthy is easier said than done. “As far as the season goes, our main thing is keeping everyone healthy,” Hutcheson said. “Everyone at some point is going to be hurt. If it’s something minor, sometimes they have to wrestle when they’re not a 100 percent.”
