Ex-LSUPD major’s case against University reinstated Trey Labat Staff Writer

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans recently reinstated a gender discrimination case against the University. The case, which was originally dismissed in 2010 by a federal judge in Baton Rouge, involves Martha Helen Haire, a former major of the LSU Police HAIRE Department, who said she was a victim of gender discrimination when vying for a promotion to chief of LSUPD. Haire claims she was discriminated

against by her co-worker by current LSUPD Chief of Police Lawrence Rabalais. Haire is now the director of Public Safety and the chief of police at the University of Northern Iowa. Rabalais allegedly told a coworker that he wanted to “get rid of” Haire and would quit if a women were appointed chief, according to court records. “I never doubted my ability to win the case, and now that the circuit has given me the opportunity, I fully expect a different outcome,” Haire said on Wednesday. The Circuit Court reinstated the case via the cat’s paw theory of liability. Cat’s paw was established by the U.S. Supreme Court and says employers can be held liable

investigation took place into Haire’s actions that included Rabalais — the person in direct competition with Haire for the promotion . He then interviewed Haire and subsequently gave her the lowest performance review she had received in her 22 years with the University. The performance review cost Haire her supervisory responsibilities. In August 2009, Rabalais was named interim police chief. The position was interim because he had not completed his college degree, a requirement of the job. Former University Chancellor Michael Martin made the formal ruling on hiring Rabalais as the police chief. Martin’s ruling HAIRE, see page 15

While the 2014 school year will ring in a new class of freshman, that fall semester will also bring about new regulations that will affect smokers on campus. On June 10, Gov. Bobby Jindal signed Senate Bill 36, which mandates all public post-secondary education institutions must develop strict non-smoking policies by August 1, 2014. The bill was first introduced into the State Senate on April 8, when it was revised, and even then, it received vast majority support in a 31-3 vote. The bill’s chief architect, Sen. David Heitmeier, D-Algiers, was also supported unanimously throughout the state House of Representatives, as the bill passed with a 97-0 vote. It also gives universities the option to ban all forms of

INTERNATIONAL Brazil protests reach new extremes, government unable to meet demands SAO PAULO (AP) — Protesters have presented the government with myriad demands and a growing list of complaints: It can’t provide its citizens with basic security, officials are corrupt and inefficient, traffic is bottlenecked on pot-holed streets and even cellphones don’t work. The long-term solutions that protesters are demanding, improvements in all facets of the public sector, will require significant reforms to the political system, not simply more funding, Eurasia Group Director Christopher Garman said. Tropical Storm Barry forms off Mexican coast, causes flash floods VERACRUZ (AP) —The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said the Atlantic hurricane season’s second tropical storm drenched areas in its path with up to 10 inches of rain in some places, raising the threat of flash floods. Veracruz state Civil Protection Secretary Noemi Guzman said 2,000 shelters had been readied in the state with mattresses, blankets, water and canned food. She said the shelters at schools and recreation centers could house up to 306,000 people.

Despite all of the developments, the High Peace Council’s Nooristan held out hope that talks would eventually be possible.

Jindal signs equal pay bill for state workers, private workers excluded

CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP) — Sharon Harvey of the Cleveland Animal Protective League said Wednesday that Lurlene the cat welcomed Noland the puppy to her “unusual little family.” The staff decided to place Noland with the nursing cat and her litter because bottle feeding doesn’t always work. The puppy will grow faster, so the shelter says it may have to come up with another feeding idea in several weeks until Noland is ready for adoption. (AP) — Gov. Bobby Jindal has agreed that state agencies should be banned from paying unequal wages to employees of different genders for the same job. Jindal signed the Equal Pay for Women Act into law on Wednesday. The bill by New Orleans Sen. Ed Murray doesn’t affect private companies. In pushing for the bill, Murray said that women in Louisiana make 69 cents for every dollar that men make for performing the same job duties and holding the same title.

Sheriffs discuss inmates and hurricane preparation in New Orleans

ATLANTA, Ga. (AP) — A vaccine against a cervical cancer virus reduced infections in teen girls by half in the first study to measure the shot’s impact since it entered the market. The results impressed health experts and a top government health official called them striking. The research released Wednesday echoes studies done before the HPV vaccine became available in 2006. But the new study is the first evidence of just how well it works now that it is in general use.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Seeking to assure the public that jail evacuation plans have greatly improved since Hurricane Katrina, Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman met with his counterparts from neighboring parishes and state officials Wednesday to discuss plans for more than 2,000 New Orleans inmates who would have to be moved if a major storm threatened. “That was then, when the plan was to stay in place,” Gusman said at a news conference.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — The U.S. Naval Academy on Wednesday charged three football players with sexually assaulting a female midshipman at an off-campus house in Annapolis more than a year ago, a case that has brought renewed focus to how the nation’s military academies handle reports of sexual assaults. The academy said in a news release that the male midshipmen are being charged with two violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Board hands hospital to NEWCO

The Daily Reveille DOGS INVADE DOWNTOWN

Taylor Schoen Staff Writer

In a special meeting on Wednesday, the LSU Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a decision to privatize the University-run hospital Bogalusa Medical Center. The Bogalusa Medical Center will be leased by NEWCO, a Louisiana nonprofit corporation. The hospital will act as a private enterprise “to serve and enhance opportunities to achieve Louisiana’s medical education, clinical care and research goals,” according to the meeting agenda. Before its approval, K. Brad Ott, director of Advocates for Louisiana Public Healthcare, raised concerns. “I’m disturbed that this board once again is contemplating approving an agreement that has blanks in it, that has no financial details,” Ott said. He said the details were not posted on the website within 24 hours in advance of the meeting, meaning less people would have time to read over the agreement. Ott also said the privatization of BMC would erase the traditions of the hospital, force employees from their jobs and cause them to lose their retirement and benefits. Ott then alleged the board members acted in their own selfinterest of politics rather than doing right by the healthcare system. “I don’t know how you sleep at night,” Ott said. “Perhaps, you delude yourselves, and now, you’ve gone to one additional level, coming up with this stock corporation known as NEWCO.” But several of the board members stated their satisfaction with the public and private agreements. Board member Rolfe McCollister said he has been pleased with the partnerships, especially since Louisiana is the only state in the nation with a statewide safety net system. “I think we’re going to see excellent patient care, more efficiency, better equipment, more services altered, and we’ll stand by our decision,” McCollister said. “I sleep very well at night.” Frank Opelka, executive vice president of healthcare and medical education redesign, said his group is sympathetic to their employees, and they are trying to stabilize and grow their future employment through the partnership. tobacco, including oral products such as dip or chewing tobacco. Judith Sylvester, mass communication associate professor and adviser of the University chapter of Fresh Campus, told the Daily Reveille in March that about 70 percent of students on campus don’t smoke. Some University students have also joined the effort to end smoking on campus. Fresh Campus is a student organization that advocates a non-smoking campus. In an interview with

Southeastern University’s student paper, The Lion’s Roar, Southeastern’s director of Public and Governmental Affairs Erin Cowser said she had doubts on the ability of universities to enforce the law in such a large area. “There are a million reasons to quit smoking and not a single one to start,” she said. “If anything, this law will discourage people from picking up the habit in the first place.”

Tigers had. A 57-11 record, 23 Southeastern Conference victories, a first-place SEC Tournament finish and a trip to Omaha to participate in the College World Series were all accomplishments for the program this season,

spear-headed by head coach Paul Mainieri. Mainieri has recently come under criticism for several moments in Omaha, but many critics are seemingly forgetting the dominance LSU’s coach has created since his arrival in

2008. Baton Rouge has seen the legacies of two National Champion baseball coaches, as Mainieri and Skip Bertman have paved the way for the continued success of LSU baseball. Both had different styles of coaching, yet both have left a

Cut the players, fire the coach and burn the stadium THE SMARTEST MORAN JAMES MORAN Sports Columnist When an excellent season comes to a screeching halt without any warning, fans are always left searching for answers as to what went wrong. They want someone or something they can point their fingers at as to why their team was sent home. And the closer they were to their goal, the more it hurts. That scapegoat makes it easier to deal with the disappointment of defeat. LSU baseball fans are certainly no different.

In the wake of LSU’s 4-2 loss to North Carolina on Tuesday— a loss that eliminated the Tigers from the College World Series — I have seen the Tiger faithful blast senior outfielder Raph Rhymes, second guess coach Paul Mainieri’s decisions and even blame TD Ameritrade Park itself for the loss. If I understand this right, the answer is to run the players out of town, fire Mainieri and burn the stadium to the ground. Is LSU now closer to a championship? Rhymes had a nightmarish end to his collegiate career in Omaha. Over the two games he went 0-for-9 at the plate and left a staggering 10 runners on base. He was bad, and I doubt he

would tell you otherwise, but to rip him like he was the only Tiger who didn’t hit these last two games is just not fair. Baseball America’s National Collegiate Freshman of the Year Alex Bregman also left Omaha hitless in addition to making the error at shortstop that allowed UCLA to score the deciding run in the Tigers’ 2-1 defeat Sunday. Junior Christian Ibarra also joined them in the “0-for-Omaha” club. To recap, the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 hitters in the Tigers’ lineup combined for exactly zero hits in the College World Series. Ryhmes’ failures were the most glaring, but it’s unfair to treat him BURN, see page 7

BURN, from page 5

like he was the only one. On to the oldest fan overreaction in the book: the team lost, fire the coach. Everyone jumped at the chance to second guess Mainieri for letting Rhymes swing away instead of bunting in the ninth inning against UCLA because he hit into a double play. He hit into a lot of double plays this season, but it’s understandable that Mainieri didn’t want to take the bat out of Rhymes’ hands to set up Ibarra, whose last hit was May 31 against Jackson State, and junior Ty Ross, who finished the season with a .217 batting average. Ryhmes finished the season third on the team with a .331 batting average and 46 RBIs. Mainieri chose to trust one of his best hitters and it didn’t work out. That’s baseball. All Mainieri can do as a coach is give his players the best chance to succeed; he can’t hit the ball for them. And finally, a special section of the fan base is too delusional to even scapegoat someone on the team, but instead, chose to blame the Tigers’ offensive struggles on the fact that TD Ameritrade Park is just too big. Baseball is the only of the four major sports where different playing fields have different dimensions, but last time I checked, both teams still swing for the same fences. Blaming the ball park is a cop-out, and that’s why you

won’t hear the players or coaches using that as an excuse. “It’s a huge park, but everybody’s playing with it,” said senior first baseman Mason Katz after the UCLA loss Sunday. “Yeah, maybe we had a few more power hitters than UCLA, but everybody has to adjust.” The Tigers never adjusted, and that is why they were sent back Baton Rouge earlier than they had hoped. The moral of the story is there isn’t always an

obvious scapegoat to blame when things go wrong. LSU had a great season, but the bats went cold at the wrong time and they lost. That’s baseball. James Moran is a 20-year-old mass communication senior from Beacon, N.Y. ANGELA MAJOR / The Daily Reveille

EVENT

Although the weather has said otherwise for weeks, summer has yet to officially emerge. The summer solstice will begin tomorrow, and to celebrate, event planners Wildflower Presents and Japanese restaurant Tsunami will be hosting “The Summer Solstice — a White Linen Party.” The summer solstice occurs every year on the third week of June, marking the start of summer and the longest day of the year. Danny Breaux, owner of Wildflower Presents, decided that Tsunami would make a prime location for the solar happening because its ideal rooftop viewing option. “I mean, you’ve got the best view in the city, and really if we’re looking at summer solstice, I mean, that’s when the sun reaches the highest point in the sky … it’s just a great place to watch the sunset,” Breaux said. The white linen theme is popular worldwide during all seasons, but it works well for a Louisiana summer event because the breathability of linen and the color white attracts less sunlight than darker colors, according to Breaux. He said white linen attire is encouraged but not necessary. The party will feature music

Beef jerky beer a smoky success THE BREWMASTER CONNOR TARTER Columnist I don’t know how they did it, but the geniuses at Invercargill Brewery in New Zealand brewed and bottled liquid beef jerky. Imagine, if you can, eating a fresh bag of jerky from the corner store. All the manufactured smoke flavor, sugar and weird preservatives invading every corner of your mouth until you finally swallow and remember that, indeed, you just ate beef, not a piece of flavored leather. Now, take that imagined

experience and liquify it. You’ve essentially just had the Invercargill Smokin’ Bishop bock beer. This beer actually came as a recommendation from a friend, who — to be fair — warned me that it tasted exactly like Jack Links. I picked it up on a whim, throwing caution to the wind because, well, I’m young, and I’m supposed to do that. Sometimes reckless ambition is a fruitful thing, giving you something like this beer to enjoy and remember forever. A cursory glance at the bottle shows some highly stylized graphics that depict the label as a piece of parchment that has been BEER, see page 11

The Smokin’ Bishop beer from Invercargill Brewery tastes like beef jerky but still provides a classic beer taste. It has a strong smoky flavoring but has remnants of other meats like ribs, pulled pork and bacon. CONNOR TARTER /

With boldly titled tracks like “New Slaves,” “I Am a God (featuring God)” and “Black Skinhead,” Kanye West’s sixth studio album was worth the wait for long-time fans. However, if you can’t take the heat, don’t listen to “Yeezus.” There will definitely be a lyric, maybe even a whole track you’ll find offensive to your race, your religion or your gender. When broken down, love, hate, justice, heartbreak and egotism are the main themes of this album, which are also the attributes that seemingly make up the Kanye West psyche. The production of the album is filled with elements that make it hard to listen to at times including high-pitched screams and the overuse of synthesizers, which give it an overall nightmarish quality. In a way that only he can master, Kanye has, yet again, taken listeners into his mind and continues to tell his dark and twisted fairy tales. AGGI ASHAGRE

Forgive me for my bias. To me, Justin Vernon, of Bon Iver and Kanye West guest-spotting fame, can do no wrong. Among the numerous side projects in which he partakes, Volcano Choir is a group that produces some of the most experimental music Vernon has laid hands on. With Volcano Choir’s second effort “Repave” waiting in the wings, “Byegone” is the first taste of what can be expected from Vernon and friends. It’s mostly an exciting sneak peek. Vernon’s unusual songwriting style and signature vocals are in the forefront. The track builds and swarms into the rousing chanting, “Set sail!” It’s certainly a rousing moment, though the song takes a while to get there. “Byegone” feels a bit more generic and appealing to less experimental indie rock, but it’s a definite reassurance of the power Volcano Choir owns. Empire of the Sun, “Ice on the Dune”

Australian electronic duo Empire of the Sun paint a world ruled by an “emperor” and a “prophet” with its latest record “Ice on the Dune”. The concept album is an interesting idea, but it doesn’t necessarily come across unless it’s been stated. However, the group did make an auxiliary album, which details the story track by track. The music ranges from bubble gum pop, to theatrical with a dash of new wave dance. The complex layering of synth and electronic nuances keep the album intriguing as well as the sometimes effeminate vocal style. While a little bit cheesy, one of the softer songs “I’ll Be Around,” is a sentimental stand out from many of the other up-tempo numbers. However, for those looking for something to shake it to this summer, “Ice on the Dune” has plenty to offer.

EDITOR’S PICK: Sigur Rós, “Kveikur”

XL Recordings

A little more than a year from the release of its last album, Icelandic post-rock trio Sigur Rós released their seventh studio album “Kveikur” Tuesday. Fans will likely enjoy everything it has to offer, from the Sigur Rós staple five-minute epic “Rafstraumur” to quieter tracks like “Var.” But there’s one track on the album, “Brennisteinn,” that stands out from the pack. “Brennisteinn” means “sulfur” in Icelandic, and the track sounds exactly like an erupting volcano, spewing poisonous gas into the air. Besides that one standout, “Kveikur” is typical Sigur Rós. It’s an enjoyable listen, but nothing to put on repeat.

A V-neck style also draw attention away from the stomach. Curvy women can accentuate their curves with a two-piece bikini with ties on each side. Women with a smaller bust can wear tops with fringes or ruffles to add volume. Heavier chested women can wear high-neck pieces.

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s… you know the rest. Warner Brothers presents “Man of Steel,” a modern take on the Superman classic. Clark Kent grew up in Kansas with his adopted parents (Kevin Costner) and (Diane Lane) while never fitting in. After discovering his inhuman powers, he searches for answers. Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Lois Lane (Amy Adams) pieces together his past in hopes of discovering whom Kent really is. As Kent learns of his mysterious past, he soon discovers he must defend earth against General Zod (Michael Shannon). The film’s prelude to what happened on Kent’s home planet was unnecessary. At times, character roles are exaggerated, and the dialogue can get theatrical. You feel every second of the two hours and 28 minutes. But the last hour-and-a-half is action packed. It’s a must see. A year-and-a-half ago, vocalist/guitarist Shayley Bourget abruptly split with metalcore act Of Mice & Men to pursue his side project, Dayshell. Bourget and his bandmates released their debut single “Share with Me” on Sumerian Records this week. No longer having to share the microphone with an unclean vocalist, Bourget makes the song his own. Though Bourget doesn’t showcase the height of his vocal range in “Share with Me,” his voice still possesses the same ambient quality that brought him fame. While the instrumentation seems to be lacking force at certain times, the riff accompanying the verses will definitely induce some headbanging. It’s a track that will grow on most, and the idea of Bourget singing on a full-length record should be enough to get fans excited for the upcoming debut album. MARCUS RODRIGUE

Clinton’s experience makes her a great candidate LIZZY ON THE LOOSE Elizabeth Garcia Columnist Since retiring from her position as Secretary of State under the Obama administration, Hillary Rodham Clinton has been out of the public spotlight. Yet most of the political world still wants to know if Clinton will run for President in 2016. I can’t answer that, but I can say if she did, she would win. Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskil recently organized a potential 2016 Clinton presidential campaign. “Regardless of who you supported for president back then, we can all agree today that there is nobody better equipped to be our next president than Hillary Clinton,” said McCaskil. In addition, there are multiple websites, Facebook pages, Tumblr and Twitter accounts with the sole purpose to get Clinton elected. A recent Washington Post poll found that 57 percent of the nation would support Clinton as a 2016 presidential candidate. Many prominent Republicans have even stated that she is a formidable candidate. The GOP Chair of Texas, Steve Munisteri, stated that if Clinton ran she would turn Texas into a battleground state. In a recent interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Former Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich spoke about Clinton and the 2016 presidential race. “The Republican Party is

incapable of competing at that level,” said Gingrich. She’s a very competent person. She’s married to the most popular Democrat in the country; they both think [it] would be good for her to be president. It makes it virtually impossible to stop her for the nomination.” So what does Clinton have that potential candidates including Rubio, Christie, Biden or Booker lack? Firstly, she is already a household name. Half of the presidential election is getting your name out to the public, especially people who are not necessarily politically engaged. Hillary Clinton has been in American households since her husband, Bill Clinton, was governor of Arkansas but more prominently when he served in the oval office from 1993 until 2001. After a stint at first lady she served as a Senator of New York from January 3, 2001, until January 21, 2009. She also has experience to boot. One of the major critiques of President Barack Obama and Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin in the 2008 election was lack of experience, especially in foreign affairs. This would not be the case for Clinton. She’s got top marks as Secretary of State. She worked diligently on multiple international crises and sought to repair the United States’ reputation among the world by visiting 112 countries. According to the Wall Street Journal, she exited her position as with a 69% approval rating despite some major critiques from Republicans on her handling of the situation in Benghazi. domestic drone opponents don’t have a problem with their private use for crops and such. But the police using drones to keep tabs on people is worrying. As is the use by the military. People who support drones overseas should research how many innocents it kills and our government’s way of counting their deaths. Don’t forget policies like “double taps” which evidence how negligent the drone program is. If we as Americans decide the deaths of innocents are acceptable in the fight against terrorism, then what are we fighting for again? What ideal separates us? -lelibertaire In response to Fernanda Zamuido-Suaréz’s article, “Bill

Plus, she has a partner in crime. Former President Clinton had an extremely successful presidency, minus Monica Lewinsky, and for the last decade he has been a force on the political front. It’s basically like getting two leaders for the price of one. In addition, Bill Clinton is a great campaigner and fundraiser. It’s one of

A woman in office is long overdue, and Clinton’s win could be a huge step for women in this nation. Five problems with Bobby Jindal’s Politico op-ed

The Daily Reveille Editorial Board

In case you weren’t aware, our fearless governor, Bobby Jindal, recently wrote an editorial in Politico in which he tries to explain to his fellow Republicans why the Democrats will inevitably lose power, paving the way for the indisputable truth that is conservatism. Except, he’s got a weird way of saying that. It’s insulting to some and idiotic to even more. Here’s five issues The Daily Reveille’s Editorial Board had with the article:

1

He insults Republicans.

Bobby J starts off his editorial by reminding his party that they lost the election to President Barack Obama twice before telling Republicans to “get on with it.” He goes on to say his party needs counseling, because “all

these public professions of feelings and inadequacy” are “getting embarrassing.” Hear that, Republicans? Stop having feelings. Bobby J says “suck it up.”

2

He insults liberals.

Here’s what Jindal thinks the left wants the government to do: Hire everyone, pay everyone, then explode. He also thinks liberals believe the earth is flat, religion is stupid and rich people are evil “unless they are from Hollywood or are liberal Democrats.” Jindal spends almost 150 words ranting about how wrong everything he thinks “the left” wants is, and yet, he doesn’t offer a definitive solution to these problems.

3

He insults Americans. Jindal manages to

piss off damn near everyone in the country in his article. Not only are liberals unrealistic and conservatives emotional, but the American people are idiots. If you voted for Barack Obama, you’ve just yet to see the error of your ways. But don’t worry — “The American public waxes and wanes,” according to Jindal. “It will wax again soon enough.” So, what? Suddenly the light will shine down and everyone will see the perfection that is conservatism?

4

His big suggestion is to wait.

Just wait. The current government’s politics are a fad that will pass as quickly as One Direction. Bobby, if you’re reading this, One Direction is a boy ban— ah, never mind. It’s not important. Anyway, Jindal suggests Republicans just wait until the

American people turn on their government. “At some point, the American public is going to revolt against the nanny state and the leftward march of this president,” he says. While yes, the American people do change their minds from time to time, isn’t assuming they’re currently in the wrong kind of insulting?

5

He insults (and contradicts) himself.

At the Republican National Convention in January, Jindal told those in attendance that the GOP didn’t need to change its principles — just everything else. “If you take nothing else away from what I say today, please understand this,” Jindal said. “We must not become the party of austerity. We must become the party of growth.” And yet, now he’s suggesting

just that. His conservative ideals are flawless, just wait for everyone to realize how right we are. Don’t change, don’t adapt, don’t evolve — stay the same, and the world can just deal with it. That’s Jindal’s suggestion in his article. Bobby, if there’s one thing everyone knows (thanks to Mitt Romney) it’s this — no one likes a flip-flopper, and stubbornness is the wrong way to go. Neither conservatives nor liberals have everything right ,and there are several obvious problems with our country right now. But refusing to compromise — after you suggested the very same — is part of the reason we’re in this mess.

More companies should invest in top-secrecy THE CON ARTIST Connor Tarter Columnist Google has always been in the business of innovation and redefinition, but secrecy has never been much of a hot button for the company. When it comes to the products Google is most well known for — Android, Chrome, Maps and other web services — the higher-ups are usually fairly open about their aims and what the general public can expect. Unlike Apple, Google isn’t open about having secrets — even it’s secrets are secret. Google X, popularly shortened to Google[x], is a program implemented to put some of the world’s best minds (and best money) into creating incredibly innovative products — most of which never see the light of day. So little is known about this program that the number of indisputable facts about it could likely be counted on two hands. To be sure, though, the program does indeed exist, and a select few innovations have made it outside of the program’s headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., including one that surfaced just a few days ago.

“Project Loon” is an idea that may bring Internet access to the entire world by way of high-flying balloons. According to Google, the balloons will bring broadband Internet to the two out of three people who don’t have it, and improve long-range communication following natural disasters — two goals that few could argue are offbase and bad for humanity. It would, however, be much easier to argue against this project if it were simply an idea at this stage. If Google still needed funding to implement this technology, or the company was unsure of how to launch these balloons, it would likely never get off the ground — pun intended. For these reasons, Google[x] must maintain utmost secrecy when spending its investors’ dollars; even the investors are in the dark on where their money goes. That way, projects like Glass, Loon or even Google’s selfdriving cars can get fully funded and innovators like Google cofounder Sergey Brin can entertain multiple possibilities for any proposed idea they decide to take off running with. It’s truly a business model that more powerhouse companies should invest in. Without investors or news syndicates knocking down the door, a company can loosen up and actually think outside the

box. Sure, Apple is secretive, but they like people to know it. Don’t let anyone fool you. Leaks are rarely unplanned, and Apple lets out exactly what it knows will get people riled up. Outside of Google[x], true secrecy is a rarity, except for Area 51, perhaps. With the advent of the Internet, information is a commodity, and people can’t handle not

knowing everything about something they’re sure exists, which is why Google[x] is such a great idea. Don’t let anyone know you’re working on something, and they won’t care about it — at least until it’s officially released. More companies should step up and follow Google’s example, providing humanity with the products and ideas it’s brightest

The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine partnered with Hotel Indigo earlier this year to adopt Huey from the shelter. After a casual conversation among colleagues about a hotel in Atlanta that has a live-in

dog, Hotel Indigo Director of Sales and Marketing, Margaret Maggio-Chappuis, said they also wanted to implement the creative idea. “We talked to Gretchen [Morgan], [LSU School of Veterinary Medicine Director of Alumni Relations], and asked her if she could help us find one because we had to have a certain personality; a dog that would be able to handle other pets, people, tons of owners, and be okay with it,” said Maggio-Chappuis. “About a week later, they found Huey for us. They sent us a picture and that was it.” The week of events will close on Friday with Pets of the

In an interview with Business Insurance, Michael W. Fox, a shareholder with law firm Ogletree, Deakins, Smoak and Stewart, said the court’s ruling was influenced by the 2011 Supreme Court decision in Vincent E. Staub v. Proctor Hospital.

“It’s just a classic case where you had a decision maker, who in the past would have argued he couldn’t have discriminated because he did not really know these people and nothing he ever said or had done shows discriminatory intent,” Fox said. “But the court really skipped over looking at his state of mind and focused instead on the state of mind of Mr. Rabalais who made several statements that could be considered sexist.” Contact Trey Labat at tlabat@lsureveille.com
