FRESHMAN GUIDE
avoiding the freshman
fifteen:
Four
Top Tips Horror stories abound on the dreaded Freshman Fifteen, where new college kids gain fifteen pounds or more in their first year of school. Studies have shown that this phenomenon is not simply an urban legend. Don’t become another statistic. Make the conscious choice to battle unhealthy choices with these four tips: NO SECONDS College meal plans usually provide you with access to buffet style dining where you can eat unlimited quantities of food. If you are not used to this, seeing the smorgasbord of options (including several daily dessert choices!) may cause you to go a little overboard. The rule of thumb here is to have all your food in front of you. Do a little survey of the food available, decide what you want, and load up your tray. Don’t go back for seconds. Having all your food in front of you at the same time will help you keep track of how much you’re eating. SNACK BETWEEN MEALS This may seem a little counterintuitive but studies have shown that five small meals a day is much better for keeping your weight down than eating three squares a FALL 2018
day. Eating regularly will help to keep your metabolic rate up, and will stop you from overeating when main mealtimes come around. When snacking, go for healthy options like carrot and cucumber sticks, fruits, nuts, or yogurt. Avoid high-sodium, high-fat content junk food as much as possible. EXERCISE The bad news is that no diet is complete without exercise. However, the good news is you’re in college, and there are a ton of choices open to you. The Rec Center is wellequipped with gyms and also runs fitness classes. If indoor activities aren’t your thing, join a club sport, play some frisbee or go hiking with some friends. Take advantage of all the facilities your college has to offer. Whatever form of exercise you choose, keep in mind that if you enjoy it, it will be less of a chore, and you will be more likely to keep going back for more.
LIFESTYLE CHOICES Keeping fit and trim is a lifestyle choice. Instead of watching a movie, go for a game of frisbee. Take the stairs instead of using the lift. Cycle to class instead of taking the bus or a car. Beyond staying active, your choice of friends will also influence your level of activity. If you mostly hang out with computer gamers, you will tend to stay indoors and at your computer. If your closest buddies are jocks, but you’re not an athlete, you may find yourself consuming a lot more calories than you should. It’s best to have a wide variety of friends with different interests and activities. After all, that’s what college is about!

The 1st Day of College TS YOUR FIRST DAY OF COLLEGE! One Iyour of the most important jobs is packing book bag. Because you’ve never
taken a college course before, you might not know what you’ll need on your first day. Pack too much and you’ll have to lug a super-heavy bag all over the campus. Pack too little and you’ll be scrambling to borrow a needed item from somebody who sits next to you.
Here are the things that you’ll need for your first day of classes. Right now you don’t know what else you’ll need for the rest of the semester; the professors will tell you in class, though. In the meantime, don’t forget these things. YOUR CLASS SCHEDULE Most students need a few days – if not longer – to remember exactly where they need to be
throughout the day. Keep the schedule in your pocket or an exterior pouch on your book bag so that you can easily reach it. A CAMPUS MAP Your campus probably has several large maps all over the place, but those spaces will be super-crowded during the first week of classes. Take the paper version so that you can check it anywhere.

down all sorts of things during the first class meetings. Be sure to always have at least one backup pen or pencil – just in case you misplace the first one, or it breaks.
PAPER Every now and then, you’ll have a professor who wants to start actual class work right away. More often than not, though, you’ll need the paper to take notes and make a supply list. If you forget your notebook or notepad, just write on the back of the syllabus. PENCILS AND PENS You’ll have to write
YOUR LAPTOP, if you have one. This is a great way to take notes, look up information, etc. But don’t forget the “old-school” paper and pen, as they’re very nice to have on hand should something go wrong with the high-tech method. Laptop batteries die. Computers develop problems. And sometimes, you just don’t feel like dragging out the computer to take a few quick notes. CLASS SPECIFIC SUPPLIES You probably won’t need your calculator on the first day of math class, for example, but some
professors want you to bring it along anyway. SPECIAL FORMS or paperwork that you have to review with your professors. If you have accommodations from disability services, bring your documentation to the professor as soon as possible. If you’re on an athletic team, bring any travel letters or excuses that the professors need to review or sign. SNACKS You might need to munch on a cereal bar or other snack for an energy boost between classes. Just make sure that you’re aware of each professor’s rule about eating in class before you break open that candy bar during a lecture. Some professors are fine with in-class snacking, but others aren’t. TEXTBOOKS Most professors don’t expect you to have your textbooks on the first day of classes, so you can usually leave these at home, but you should, on the first day of class, make sure you know which books your professors want you to buy for the semester.

Empowering Entrepreneurs LSU’s Stephenson Department of Entrepreneurship & Information Systems is developing the next generation of entrepreneurs. These individuals will meet the needs of a changing world. Where some see threats, they see opportunities. An entrepreneurial mindset means accepting the inevitability of change and taking calculated risks. Many entrepreneurs will start businesses; some will transform a small family business into an empire. Others will use social entrepreneurship to tackle poverty, pollution, disease, and other pressing issues. And there is a group of entrepreneurs that won’t start businesses at all. You will find them in management at some of the world’s biggest companies. Entrepreneurship students benefit from both classroom instruction and connections with business leaders. The Stephenson Department of Entrepreneurship & Information Systems offers several options for any undergraduate to study entrepreneurship. Elective courses: Learn about innovation, franchising, small business, commercialization, and more. Entrepreneurship Fellows: Apply for this yearlong program to be exposed to entrepreneurial networks and mentors. Entrepreneurship minor: Complete 15 hours consisting of a mix of required courses and approved-electives. BS in Entrepreneurship: Combine your passion with essential business skills. Students in this program pair a degree in entrepreneurship and any other bachelor’s degree at LSU. The possibilities are endless.
“Combining marketing and entrepreneurship will not only help me innovate and market an expanding family business but will also provide me with the tools to excel in future ventures. The skills we learn in entrepreneurship and marketing are essential to succeed in the evolving retail world. MANY UNIVERSITY STUDENTS FIND IT CHALLENGING
to choose a college major. This decision will affect the course of a student’s life, salary, environment, and job satisfaction. Although this is perhaps the most daunting decision students will make during their college years, students who consider their talents, interests, and preferences are certain to find a satisfying major.
12
FRESHMAN GUIDE
Twhen trying to decide on a college
HE FIRST THING YOU SHOULD DO
major is make a list of your interests. If you have a variety of interests, it is a good idea to give each item a ranking from “most interesting” to “least interesting.” You can then select the top five or ten list items and consider whether they could be satisfying things about which to learn. Men and women making this important decision should realize that college majors usually affect job opportunities and future careers, so students should consider whether their majors are fields in which they would like to work. You should also consider your preferred work environment. For example, a person who enjoys working with large groups of people could consider majoring in education or communications, and a person who prefers to travel frequently could decide to major in international business or international studies.
Likewise, a student should decide what he or she would like to gain from a college major and a job in that field. If stability and a large salary are important to a student, a major in a medical science, business, or law is a good option. Undecided students should also make lists of their skills and talents, and then see if any of those talents could correspond with particular majors. Creative students could consider taking art, fashion design, or computer graphics classes. Similarly, students who are skilled mathematicians may consider a field such as physics, engineering, or computer science. Anyone who has difficulty making a list of talents should discuss their list with close friends, family members, and professors. Such people will be able to easily pinpoint a student’s talents and add to the list. Once a student has narrowed
down a list of possible majors, he or she should learn more about these fields. Students can do this by taking a variety of introductory classes, talking to professors, and speaking with people who work in the considered fields. In addition, it is a good idea to speak with academic advisors about different majors. These professionals are accustomed to giving undecided students advice about their course selections and various majors. University students should not be afraid of experimenting and trying a variety of majors before making a final decision. Although choosing a college major is one of the most important decisions a student will make while attending a university, these techniques help you find the perfect major. Undecided students who list their talents and interests, and who try different majors while seeking advice from professionals are certain to pick an interesting and engaging major.

THINKING OUT LOUD a Guide to Speaking Up in Class
EVEN IF YOU'RE USUALLY A CONFIDENT PERSON, SPEAKING up in class can be a bit daunting. If you're a naturally quiet person, it's terrifying. However, it's important not to let fear hold you back from getting the most out of your classes.
Stephenson Information Systems Information systems is the study of technology, business processes, people and organizations, and the relationships among them. Information systems is people-oriented; its primary focus is not on how or why technology works. Using business processes and technology as raw materials, students build systems and solutions to maximize efficiency, strategic options, and profitability. The Stephenson Department of Entrepreneurship & Information Systems offers a BS in Information Systems & Decision Sciences and minors in information technology management, analytics, and entrepreneurship.

PREPARATION IS KEY Are you holding back from speaking up because you're afraid of looking dumb? Some people might say that you should just not worry about it, but that's unlikely to work. Instead, you can reduce your chance of feeling stupid by reading up in preparation for class. Take a look at the course textbook, the syllabus, and any class notes you've been given to find out what's going to be covered. Make a list of questions that you want to ask in class. If you've read through the material carefully, these questions are likely to be valuable ones that get right to the heart of the topic, not simple misunderstandings that make you look dumb.
CHANGE HOW YOU SEE YOUR CLASSMATES
411 Ben Hur Rd. Suite B 985.351.7666 FALL 2018
Do you see your classmates as monsters who are waiting to jump on you as soon as you make a mistake? Or as people who will gossip about you behind your back if you give the impression of being a teacher's pet? If so, it's time to change your perceptions. Your classmates are a lot like you: if you're confused, then it's likely they are too.
KEEP TRYING TO SPEAK UP Speaking up in class is tough, but it's important. If you don't ask questions when you don't understand something in class, you could fall behind and face even more embarrassment when exam time rolls around - and it comes around surprisingly quickly. Set yourself goals for speaking up and try your best to stick to them.

WANT TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN COLLEGE? You may have never had to study through grade school, but you, like many others, will find that this does not work as well in college. Given how expensive college is, it makes sense that a minimal amount of effort be put forth to finish your education. Below are five tips that are incredibly simple but just as effective ways to be successful in college. These will both make the experience more rewarding and less stressful.
1
22
Go to Class: The open nature of higher education allows for the temptation to skip class to grow exponentially. So, if you thought skipping class in high school was appealing, then you’ll be impressed by how quickly your motivation fails once you read “no attendance policy” on a syllabus. You may not be punished directly for never showing up, but it’ll make finals week so much more stressful when you must cram an entire semester's worth of information into a five-hour long, caffeine-fueled, panic attack as you desperately try to memorize every stage of cellular reproduction or to figure out what the difference between a mafic and ultramafic rock is. So yeah, just show up, and your life will be easier.
2 Participate in Class: Once you’ve established that you are, indeed, in the classroom and not sleeping off the one-in-the-morning Netflix binge, you should participate. Even if the material is easy for you, participating in discussion will help you retain that information much better. When test time rolls around you can run through it and leave to go take a nap or get some coffee. Also, discussion helps iron out the kinks that you or anyone else may have on the material. Simple mistakes can be avoided if you ask a question. There is, of course, the bonus of staying awake in those morning classes. You can’t be sleeping if you are engaged in a lively discussion on metaphysics or whatever. FRESHMAN GUIDE
3
Take Notes. When you do take notes, write by hand. Taking notes is another obvious tip, but it still retains enough importance to continue to be drilled into your brain. The main advantage of notes is, of course, memory retention. It has been shown that recording your notes by hand is more effective than typing on a laptop. The keyboard may be quicker, but thinking about how to boil down the main points so you won’t be left behind will help you remember the material better. They provide useful studying material later as well.
4
Review Your Notes Often: This is one of the easiest and effective studying tips. No matter how busy you are, or despite how boring it is, reviewing your notes can be one of the most time-efficient ways of studying. Of, course it would be ideal to review them every day, but even once a week will prove helpful. Every now and again just pull them out and read through them. You’ll be surprised how much this helps when test day comes around. Also, if you have the time, go through and highlight or bold the important bits.
5
These five tips may seem like common sense… because they are common sense. However, remain significant enough to make it worth repeating over and over. These tips are not incredibly time intensive or difficult and will make your college career both easier and more fulfilling. College is a wonderful experience that if approached the right way will open your mind and can be one of the most influential periods of your life. FALL 2018
Talk to Your Instructor: These people are literally paid to help you. Take advantage of office hours if you have a question or are struggling with something. If you are too shy or anxious to speak up in class, then this is a suitable alternative. You’ll be in a more private setting without feeling the pressure of the group on your shoulders. It can come in handy if you end up late on an assignment or miss class for whatever reason. Professors are people too and often are quite understanding. This could make a difference in your grade. Showing up and talking to them lets them know you care enough to make the effort to speak to them. Talking to your professor is one of the best ways to get your career started. If you want to make a life of what you do in college, then they will be able to help you. They can give you advice or turn you on to great opportunities that will help you either in the job market or in applying for graduate school. Most of them will be excited that someone else is interested in the same stuff they are so take advantage of this.

Rooms in residence halls are not renowned for the being the homiest or most welcoming. Chances are that you'll be moving into a white box with a desk, bed, and wardrobe. BATTERY-POWERED FAIRY LIGHTS Fairy lights are a quaint way to add some extra lighting to your room, and they're available in a variety of styles. Rainbow-colored lights are cute and perfect around Christmas time. You could choose white lights for a simpler look. Most halls of residence ban candles and wired fairy lights due to the fire risk, so the battery-powered variety are a good, safe alternative.
FALL 2018
COMMAND STRIPS Chances are, you'll have a lot of bare walls in your new room and will want to fill them with something. If nails and blue tack are banned, then don't worry; Command Strips are the perfect solution. Using special strips of double sided tape, you can attach posters, picture frames, or sturdy plastic hooks to your wall. Once you're ready to move out, the strips can be easily removed, leaving no residue. The hooks can be used in a variety of creative ways to double as storage and decoration, perhaps to hang up clothes, scarves, or jewelry. You could also stick up pictures of family and friends, arty canvases, or a corkboard to help you stay organized.
RUGS, THROWS, & CUSHIONS If you're starting university in autumn or winter, then it's important to make sure your room is nice and cozy. Buy a thick duvet with a patterned cover, and add a few cushions or extra blankets to your bed. This is helpful if you have friends over and want to turn the bed into a makeshift sofa, and it will also make your room look much more warm and welcoming. If the floor's wooden or covered in a thin carpet, then consider buying a rug. This can make a big difference in how warm the room feels, and it's also another way to add color and interest to your room with minimal effort. Choose a soft material with a design you love and will be happy to get home. Settling in at your university can be hard at first, but it's made a lot easier when you have a room you love. These easy tips will have your room feeling like home in no time -- you might not even want to leave when the holidays come!

8 IMPORTANT THINGS YOU SHOULDN’T FORGET WHEN PACKING FOR COLLEGE
Getting ready to go off to college is probably one of the most exciting experiences you’ve had so far in your life. Apart from maybe going off to summer camp or staying with a relative for the summer, you’ve likely never really experienced living away from home. Now, in the blink of an eye, you will go to an entirely new living situation.
You may have started putting together a master packing list for everything that you need to remember to bring when heading off to the dorms. You may have all the essentials covered, like bedding, clothes, toiletries, and electronics. However, there may be a few less-obvious items that you’re forgetting, which will make your first few days after moving in much easier.
Flip Flops - At home, your bathroom floor might get a little gross sometimes in between the days when you clean, but you probably feel pretty comfortable walking around barefoot most of the time. Remember when you head off to college, however, that you are going from an individual home to a communal living space. This change means you will be around a whole new slew of germs that you don’t always want to be stepping in. A good pair of flip-flops will be great for walking around when you don’t want to go to the trouble of putting on socks and shoes.
Surge Protector – No matter how well-equipped your dorm room seems when you first move in, you will probably soon discover that there are nowhere near enough power outlets for you to plug in all the gadgets that you’ve brought with you. Bringing a surge protector will ensure you have plenty of space to charge your phone, power your TV, and plug in your curling iron, all at the same time. Since surge protectors are relatively cheap (usually less than $10), you should consider picking up a second one to bring with you. If your roommate didn’t come prepared, offering up your spare power strip could be a great way to make a good first impression.
Bathrobe – Whether you have to share a bathroom with your floor or just a few other people, having a bathrobe to slip on when you get done showering will be a surefire way to save yourself from any potentially awkward moments.

FRESHMAN GUIDE
Mattress Pad – Dorm mattresses are notoriously cheap. Most are only a few inches thick and may have been slept on for years before you arrived. Up your comfort level by bringing a mattress pad that you can put on top of the bed you’re provided. The foam variety that look like an egg crate on one side are perfect for making beds softer.
Umbrella – When you come from a town that relies heavily on cars for transportation, you’re probably used to running for cover whenever it starts raining and then going out once the rain lets up. In college, however, most of your transportation will be accomplished by walking. Don’t be unprepared to get caught in the rain. Invest in a good umbrella that you can put up whenever it starts pouring. Actually, you should plan on bringing at least two umbrellas with you to school and keeping the spare in your dorm room. Umbrellas are notorious for breaking in the wind, so if yours succumbs, you will at least have a backup.
Formal Clothes – You’re going to be spending all your college days in relaxed settings, lounging on the quad, and going to classes in t-shirts and jeans, so you can feel free to leave any “nice” clothes at home, right? Actually, there are many opportunities to dress up while you’re in school. Whether you go to a dinner with one of your professors, go out on a date, or decide to rush a sorority or fraternity, you should have at least two formal outfits that will be appropriate for this type of situation.
Can Opener – If you have a microwave in your dorm, there are doubtlessly going to be times when you want to make dinner in your room instead of going to the dining hall. In this situation, canned food is the easiest to whip up, but it will be impossible to do so unless you remember to bring a can opener.
Flash Drive – Call it what you want (a thumb drive, a memory stick, a USB key), but having some sort of portable flash memory that you can plug into any computer is an invaluable tool in college. You can use it to transport files you want to print at the computer lab, quickly share pictures with your friends, or bring a copy of your presentation to class. Flash drives keep getting smaller and cheaper, so you can easily carry around several gigabytes in your pocket.

WHY YOU SHOULD STUDY IN A GROUP The next time you go for a walk or on a drive and notice a group of runners jogging along the street, observe them for a minute. Do you ever wonder why people who jog on a regular basis so often jog with partners or in groups? 32
If you exercise, you probably already understand why running in a group is more effective than running alone. The group encourages motivation amongst all of its members. It is much easier to run the length of a five-mile road when you’re with someone else than when you’re by yourself for the simple reason that you never want to be the one lagging behind. Each runner passively pushes the others to keep up the pace and to carry on the momentum of the run. Alone, conversely, the runner doesn’t have anybody else to prove himself to or to compare himself with. Therefore, it is easier for him to give up after two miles because he is tired. The same principle applies to studying. The reason that studying with a friend or as a part of a study group is effective is the same reason that jogging in pairs or in groups is effective. It is easier to stay motivated when you’re “keeping up” with the rest of the pack, whether that pack is on the road or at a table in the library. Social study is also an easy way to keep your grades up and improve your performance in difficult courses. Social study can be conducted in two ways: in pairs or in groups. Both forms of study are more effective in most situations than solitary study, and both offer their own unique benefits. Studying in pairs allows for oneon-one interaction between students. This is the best option for people who prefer to study alone, because it only involves interaction with one other person. Ideally, you and your study partner will have
different academic strengths. If you’re an expert in math and your partner is an ace at writing, you can easily cancel out each other’s weaknesses if you’re working on writing and math together. Study groups are more useful for taking on larger courses of up to two hundred students. Because these courses are so large, it is more likely that students will join in groups of five or ten to study. The primary benefit of a study group this size is the broad exchange of ideas it offers. While it doesn’t allow for much in the way of personal, one-onone contact, it is a more efficient method of study for classes that don’t explore their subject matters very deeply. Both methods ensure that each member of the group keeps up with the rest of its members and that each stays current on his or her homework and study, just as running in a pack does to ensure each member keeps to a regular exercise routine. Anyone who can’t or won’t study at the same pace as the rest of the group will find he cannot contribute to discussions, and he’ll either be shamed into catching up or will have to drop out of the group. While peer pressure is often described as a negative influence, the study group is one scenario in which it acts as a force for good. If you’re taking a course and you feel as though you’re falling behind on the material or that you lack an understanding of the subject matter, do yourself a favor and join a study group. It may mean the difference between dropping that course and acing it.

Study Tips for Making Great Grades in College Earning a college degree is rewarding even if it is challenging. While you make your way through school, take time to develop good study habits. This will help you accomplish your goals and earn good grades. Learning study techniques will boost your confidence and make the transition back to college easier. Here are three study tips to help you make top grades at college.
Study with a friend It takes time to get to know your classmates and develop friendships, but once you do select friends from each class who share your goal of obtaining good grades. Not only will you encourage each other in your goals, but studying with a friend is a productive way to assimilate the new information. Take turns quizzing each other. You will gain a lot by reading and listening to the questions and answers.
As you enjoy your t colleg ime at e, rem em
ber to good cultiv study ate habits enhan . This ce you will r time your g at sch rades ool an will i d ncrea se.
Teach Someone Else Studies show that one great way to solidify learning is to teach it to someone else. The act of retelling what you have learned crystallizes it in your mind, and you remember it. So, find someone to whom you can teach your newfound information. This could be part of your study date with a friend. Both of you could take turns teaching the other some part of what you learned. This may work best with a friend who has a different class so the friend would actually be learning something new from your "lesson." Another suggestion is to could teach the new material to a family member.
Write It Down Internalize what you read by highlighting the main points from the book, then write a summary of it. Writing a summary forces your mind to recall the information. Thus, the new material is solidified in your mind.

ATTENDANCE IS K E Y 38
Most students enter college with a very well-meaning, gung-ho attitude. They promise themselves that they will attend all of their lectures and keep up with all their readings and assignments. However, reality usually kicks in after a few weeks when students realize how tired they are. This is the point when attendance rapidly drops off and many students simply read their textbooks and stop attending lectures. If you want to do well in college, then this probably isn't a smart move. You should always strive to keep up with your readings and attend every single lecture. Need further convincing? Consider these 5 reasons for why attending your lectures can benefit you:
1
You'll learn material that isn't in the book
Though some professors "teach from the book," it is likely that they will still present information in lecture that isn't in the text. You definitely don't want to miss this information when it is presented, because chances are that you'll be tested on it later when your professor wants to see who has actually been present and listening.
2
You'll know what to focus on for the exam
If you never attend class, then you'll never know if your professor puts more emphasis on certain parts of the course material and less emphasis on others. You can study as hard as you like and feel confident come exam day, only to find out that you should have known one specific portion in a lot more detail than you do. Going to class regularly can prevent this from happening.
3
You'll have to spend less time studying
If none of the reasons above are compelling enough to get you to go to class, then at least consider the fact that your class time can be thought of as a review session. If you always have your readings done before class, then lecture will serve to summarize and reinforce the information in your mind. One hour spent sitting in class means one less hour of studying later.
4
You'll get higher grades
The bottom line is that students who are engaged with the class and the course material almost always get higher grades, and one of the best ways to engage yourself is simply to attend lectures and to pay attention while you are there. You will certainly get something out of it that will benefit you and enable you to get higher marks.
5
You'll gain insight and clarification on book material
Even if your professor teaches exclusively from the book, they can still shed a lot of light and clarification on the course material. They have, after all, put in many years at school to become an expert in the field, and you should consider their insight to be invaluable for your education. Sure, you can read the whole textbook yourself, but that doesn't guarantee that you will actually understand all of the information.
