Pokémon Go provides entertainment on campus BY SARAH WHITECOTTON @snwhitecotton When you arrive in the fall, you should be prepared to engage in one of capus’s favorite activites. At any given time, people can be seen walking around campus hunting for Pokémon on the new Pokémon Go app. From bathroom stalls in the LSU Student Union to inside Mike the Tiger’s Habitat, the little animated creatures can be found all around campus. Nintendo, in partnership with Niantic, Inc., released the IOS and Android game last week, and it has since taken the world - and students - by storm. With 7.5 million downloads as of Monday, the app is already more popular than Tinder and may soon surpass Twitter in the number of daily users. To play the augmented reality game, players use their phone’s GPS to move around on an interactive map. The goal is to find and catch Pokémon as you walk, bike or skate around. When you get near a Pokémon, you can use your phone’s camera to see the monsters in real time and catch them by throwing Pokéballs at them.
What makes the game unique, and also contributes to its popularity, is its use of augmented reality. In Pokémon Go, technology meets the real world. Unlike the previous games, Pokémon Go forces users to leave their house in order to catch Pokémon. The game also brings groups of strangers together with a shared experience. Besides hunting for Pokémon, players can go to locations called Pokéstops to collect items such as Pokéballs and potions. Pokéstops are located at important spots, such as memorials and buildings. Pokéstops can be found all over campus from tree endowments, to the LSU Museum of Natural Science, to the Shaquille O’Neal statue. Lures can be set up at these Pokéstops. The lures attract Pokémon to the Pokéstops. The abundance of available Pokémon also draws users to these locations. Despite the fun the app provides, no shortage of weird stories have popped up. In Wyoming, a player found a dead body floating in a river while searching for water-type pokemon. In Missouri, lures were used by four men to attract
medium Large 2-topping pizza 2-topping pizza
users to a certain Pokéstop and rob them. And of course there are those who are using the app while driving. Many police departments put out warnings against playing and driving shortly after the game’s release. Despite the negatives, the game’s popularity continues to grow. One thing that makes Pokémon Go unique is the presence of teams and gyms, which can create unity between players. Once a player reaches level five, they choose a team. The three teams are Valor, Mystic and Instinct. Once players join a team, they can go to gyms and compete against other users. Like Pokéstops, gyms are located at real world locations and require users to walk to find them. Gyms are either rival or friendly. Rival gyms belong to either of the two teams a player is not a part of. Once the battle has started, players choose from the Pokémon they have collected to defeat the opponent and claim the gym for their own. Some gyms around campus are Tiger Stadium, Bernie Moore Track Stadium, and St. Alban’s Episcopal Chapel.

FYE aims to help with transition to college BY KATIE GAGLIANO @katie_gagliano Making the transition to college can be overwhelming, but First Year Experience has a solution to make the milestone a little less stressful. Each year FYE hosts Bengal Bound, the University’s official welcome “week,” which features over 70 events from University colleges, organizations and centers, aimed at preparing students for a successful college experience. FYE senior program coordinator Maggi Spurlock said this year’s program will run from August 17 through September 3. Each day will feature at least one program or event on-campus, with some days including as many as 10 events. Bengal Bound is a great way for students to acclimate to University life and begin making the connections that are critical to success, she said. According to Spurlock, connectivity and confidence are important factors in student retention rates. “If they’re happy here, if they’re doing well academically and using all those resources, they’re going to be more successful, they’re going to be happy and then they’re going to stay at LSU,” Spurlock said. Bengal Bound includes a number of guidance based events and services to set students on the right path. On August 21, students from LSU
Ambassadors will be available outside Memorial Tower from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. to walk class schedules with incoming students before the first day of classes. If you still need help finding your way, Bengal Bound student leaders will man Ask Me stations in front of Lockett Hall and the LSU Student Union the first Monday and Tuesday of classes. Students will be available from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. to answer questions and provide assistance to lost students, Spurlock said. To get freshmen settled academically, the University Center for Freshman Year will host a Mad Hatters’ Tea Party Aug. 26 to introduce students to their academic advisers. It’s a great opportunity for students to relax and meet their advisers in a low stress environment, she said. For those looking to relax, Bengal Bound also offers a number of fun events and entertainment opportunities to introduce new Tigers to the social side of the University. On Aug. 24, the LSU Alumni Association will host a Food Truck WroundUp at the Lod Cook Alumni Center near University Lake, Spurlock said. Grab your friends and floor mates for bonding time while you sample the best eats from the Baton Rouge food truck scene. If you can’t make it to the WroundUp, check out one of the numerous food-centric socials hosted by various campus ministry organizations through-
out the week. There will be chicken and waffle, 99 cent steak and snowball nights on both the Parade Grounds and at student worship centers, she said. There are also fun activities with an altruistic side. At Tiger Time, the annual class photo in Tiger Stadium, students can bring a clean, gently used college t-shirt and exchange it for a brand new LSU shirt. All collected t-shirts are donated to a local Volunteers of America homeless shelter, Spurlock said. The connectivity and confidence impressed upon students during Bengal Bound is important to maintain throughout the semester, she said. If incoming students are looking for guidance beyond the first weeks of school, FYE offers a mentoring program called the Tiger Transition Team, or T3. Students will be paired with an upperclassmen mentor, and the mentor will work with the student for the duration of the semester, Spurlock said. The T3 program kicks off Aug. 21 and each month features at least two group events, in addition to personal contact with mentors, workshop elements and a Moodle course. T3 gives students the opportunity to excel and grow as leaders and students, and many participants later return to the program as mentors, Spurlock said. “It’s a level of confidence and comfort at LSU that’s really going to help them be successful in the long run,” Spurlock said.

Introduction to Baton Rouge
If you’re not native to Baton Rouge, you’re likely not too familiar with what the city has to offer. So, we’ve compiled a list of really interesting places to visit and things to do around town to help introduce you to the Red Stick: BY DILLON LOWE | @d_lowe96
Old State Capitol
Baton Rouge Gallery
USS Kidd
If you’re not from Louisiana and want to learn more about the state’s history and cultural impact, or if you’re a local interested in expanding your existing knowledge, you might want to visit Louisiana’s Old State Capitol. Visitors of this museum will be engaged in interactive exhibits that explore the events that shaped Louisiana’s history. The Old State Capitol also regularly hosts art exhibitions – their most recent exhibition highlighted the work of Diana Walker, a photographer who was able to document intimate moments in the lives of several U.S. presidents.
For those of you who want to delve into the work of local artists, look no further than the Baton Rouge Gallery, a center for the region’s most innovative contemporary artists. The gallery hosts several exhibitions throughout the year, so check out the calendar on their website to see if any of the artists catch your attention. The Baton Rouge Gallery also hosts a very cool film series called Movies & Music on the Lawn, in which silent films are paired with original live scores performed by some of the area’s most talented bands.
One of the most significant historical memorials in Baton Rouge is the destroyer USS Kidd, a monument now dedicated to the men and women of the U.S. armed forces. Located in downtown Baton Rouge, visitors are invited to walk the decks of the ship, examine the names of fallen Americans carved into the black granite walls of the Louisiana Memorial Plaza and see an aircraft utilized during two decades of conflict.

The Spanish Moon In recent years, Baton Rouge’s live music scene has been booming. At the forefront of this booming music scene is The Spanish Moon. What separates The Spanish Moon from other venues in Baton Rouge is its consistently diverse schedule. The concert hall regularly hosts artists with national followings, as well as local underground performers looking for a platform to share their work.
Atomic Pop This one is for you, music lovers. Atomic Pop Shop is a mom and pop record store on Government St. with a lot of personality. Not only does Atomic Pop Shop boast an extensive vinyl collection, but the store also hosts a variety of in-store performances from both local and touring bands. If you’re looking to be introduced to a new band, or you just want to get lost in the rows upon rows of records, you may want to stop by.

4 things you didn’t learn at orientation Your freshman year of college is going to be fun and will contain some of the more memorable times of your life. But, one of the big keys in getting through your first year of school is learning how to deal with adversity. Trust me there’s going to be a lot of it. So here’s a four things that you didn’t learn at orientation that’ll help you in your first year: BY JOSHUA THORNTON | @JoshTDR

If you have more than three finals in a span of 24 hours, you can rearrange your exam schedule. Finals week is one time of the semester that everyone loves to hate. The smell of coffee fills the air, and students that spent their entire semester procrastinating and overachievers all converge in Middleton Library at once. If you happen to be an unlucky student that ends up having more than three finals in a 24 hour period, you can make a request to your senior college to move your schedule around. It’s a real handy trick, but, since having three finals in one day is rare, most people don’t know about it.

If your laptop breaks or you don’t have one, it’s not the end of the world. Sometimes your laptop is going to be your best friend in college. But technology is weird and happens to break at the most inconvenient time (like when you have a four-page paper due), but don’t fret. Thanks to the LSU Student Technology Fee, laptops are available to rent at Middleton Library. All you need is your LSU ID and you can rent out of the laptop for three days. So keep that in mind if you don’t want to drop thousands of dollars on a new computer.
3
4
Save money. Rent a clicker.
You should never go hungry.
Computers aren’t the only thing that you can rent out from the library. Clickers, which are little electronic devices professors use to mark attendance or quizzes, can be rented out for the entire semester. There’s a limited number available so if you want to save a few bucks, go to the library before the semester starts and see about renting a clicker.
In August 2013, LSU opened up a food pantry to meet the needs of students without food or low in food security. The pantry is open every weekday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and provides non-perishable items to students at no cost. To take advantage of the pantry if you need it. You have to be a student enrolled in the current semester and present your LSU ID when visiting. The pantry is located on the third floor of the LSU Student Union in room 333, which is inside the Office of the Dean of Students.

student fees breakdown Incoming freshman and new Tiger parents will have tons of questions about what they are paying for when the University’s fall fee bill comes out. The list is long, but fret not. Here are a few from the University’s Fee Glossary that we think are important for you to be familiarized with: BY JOURDAN RILEY | @jourdanr_TDR
ZOE GEAUTHREAUX/ The Daily Reveille
Student Health Center The Student Health Fee entitles full-time students access to Student Health Center services such as unlimited visits to the primary care clinicians, mental health clinicians and registered dietitians. Medical procedures, laboratory, pharmacy and diagnostic imaging services are available for an additional charge. If you have to pay out of pocket, prices can cause anywhere from $20 to over $100. However, many of students’ out of pockets expenses may be covered by health insurance. As for prescriptions, if a student dislikes the cost they can always have their prescription transferred to the nearest Walgreens or CVS pharmacy.
Student Technology Fee This fee is assessed at $5.00 per credit hour up to a maximum of $75 per semester. This fee is dedicated to the acquisition, installation, maintenance, and intelligent use of state-of-the-art technology solely for the purpose of supporting and enhancing student life and learning and of preparing graduates for the workplaces of the twenty-first century. There are programs students can get for free through their myLSU account when they click on tigerware. Programs include Microsoft, Office 365, Adobe Reader and more. This fee also covers computer use in the library including laptop and iPad rentals. There are also computer labs through the CxC program located in Coates and the Art and Design building. Here, you can rent cameras for both still pictures and videos. There are also rooms for group projects.
Student Sports Recreation These funds are used to support and maintain the Student Recreational Sports Complex including the outdoor field spaces. There is great equipment that I’m sure you’ve all heard about at orientation. There’ll even be a lazy swimming pool in the near future. At the UREC you can also get locks for lockers to keep valuables safe where there is also a sauna. Basketballs, volleyballs, racquets and more can also be rented.
Student Media This fee supports the Office of Student Media, which provides a variety of student-run media, offering the campus news, features and entertainment. The Office of Student Media administers the student-run newspaper, yearbook, radio station, cable television station, and magazine. The Student Media fee helps support the employment of students at the following student-ran offices: KLSU Radio, Gumbo/ Yearbook, Legacy, Reveille, and Tiger TV.

WHAT TO PACK BY BETH CARTER | @bethie_carter
I’m sure by now you’ve probably gotten hundreds of lists, read thousands of online articles, and collected a million items that you plan on taking to your dorm in the fall. But in accumulating all your dorm-ready equipment, be sure to remember the essentials. This list will help you remember the little things that make a big difference.
Can Opener A can opener is a must for those nights where you’re too lazy to walk to the dining hall and too poor to order Jimmy Johns. Last year, I brought so much soup and Chef Boyardee that my dorm looked like a canned goods shelf at the grocery. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring a can opener. I managed to get a can of ravioli open with a sharp knife (never mind the fact that I had brought a kitchen knife to college, but not a can opener) but almost sliced my hand off. Save a life. Buy a can opener.
Personal Information For those of you who don’t have the luxury of running home if you forget a very important piece of personal information, remember to take a folder with copies of your birth certificate, insurance information, passport and any other documents that you need to be a real adult. Plus, it’ll save you from having to call your mom every time you need to know your social security number.
Umbrella Rain or shine, LSU is a walking campus. With Louisiana’s typically unpredictable weather, a nice sunny day can become a rainy monsoon in a matter of minutes. To avoid getting soaked during your walk from Middleton to the BEC, put an umbrella in your backpack, like, now. There might be a zero percent chance of rain in Death Valley, but it rains everywhere else on campus all the time.
Extra-Long Charger If you plan on lofting your bed, you should also plan on investing in a charger that can reach you. Not only does it save you from waking up to a dead phone every morning, but it can also be a life-saver if your phone slides off your bed while you’re awake. Just grab the cord with your lightning-fast reflexes and pull your phone to safety like a modern day Indiana Jones.
Stapler There are always professors who have strict guidelines for turning in classwork. For some, incorrect formatting or not putting your name on your paper will automatically drop your grade. For others, unstapled essays means bad news for students. By having that mini stapler in your backpack, you’ll save your GPA and immediately become the most popular kid in the class on essay turn-in days.

Do something cool for Labor Day BY WILLIAM TAYLOR POTTER @wmtaylorpotter It’s Aug. 22, and classes have started. You get lost a few times on the way. You don’t really know anyone. Everything feels weird. But fast forward two weeks. LSU really starts to feel like home, and you finally start to get your classes figured out. You start to know the professors. You feel like you know the material. Maybe you’ve started making friends and getting to know some new people. But then Labor Day comes. Now, I know what you’re thinking. A break so early in the year sounds nice, right? It can be, but it can also be very tough on out-of-state students. Take me for example. I’m from a small-ish Texas town about six hours away. It is a long, boring drive. Who wants to spend their Labor Day weekend driving for 12 hours? I ended up sitting in my dorm room re-reading Harry Potter books. While that is a very cool activity, it was somewhat depressing. All the friends I had made were out of town, and I didn’t know
the area well enough to know what there was to do. Now, two years later, I know better. If you’re stuck here during that holiday, there is no reason to stay inside. Baton Rouge has a lot to offer. There’s a lot of cool tourist-y stuff to do, like going to the levee or walking around the Capitol. There’s also half a dozen movie theaters nearby, and one of the better malls I’ve been to. And now, there’s even fewer reasons
to stay inside. The UREC construction is much further along than it was back in my day, so you could take advantage of that. You might also wander around on Pokémon Go. At any given time, you might see 20-30 people exploring campus doing the same thing. People here are nice, so try to make so new friends. Whatever you end up doing, just try not to be the lame out-of-state kid that I was. It’s one of my biggest regrets in college, so don’t let it be one of yours.

LSU offers rich history students should explore BY CARRIE GRACE HENDERSON @carriegraceh The casual observer, and even the history buff, can get caught up in the present – joining clubs, making friends, acing classes – or stress about the future – filling out that resume and nailing those internships – without ever understanding what makes up the “rich LSU tradition” you hear so much about. There are a million things to make sure you see and do during your time as a college student, but it would be a mistake if you spent your years here without taking in some of the history that surrounds you. The history that you know get to help create. Here three quick hits that may not show up on your freshman information guide. tle
Jean Étienne de Boré’s Sugar Ket-
Outside the Chemical Engineering Building is what appears to be a large, upside down, rusted out bowl, but the
device is said to be the first kettle use to granulate sugar. A practice that seems totally commonplace to us now, was revolutionary at the time, allowing traders to ship sugar across oceans without having their watery cargo leak out along the way. De Boré’s invention made sugar the then-fledgling colony’s primary commodity crop and began generating profits for the state. When Louisiana eventually joined the United States, De Boré was appointed the first mayor of New Orleans. Civil War Cannons By now, you’ve probably hear your future alma mater affectionately referred to as, “The Ole War Skule,” and for good reason. The University’s military history is well-documented and celebrated by several landmarks including the Memorial Tower, which honors LSU students and Louisianans killed in WWI and will soon house the school’s military museum, as well the LSU War Memorial on the Parade Ground, honoring those who served in WWII. But lesser known are two the

Civil War Cannons, on display outside the Military Science Building. The cannons were used at Fort Sumter and donated to the University by Union Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman, who, better known for his “March to the Sea,” was also the school’s first president. The Manship School of Mass Communication Though I’m certainly partial to this building because of my major, it earned its spot on this list in it’s own right. The oldest building on campus, was built in 1904 approximately four miles from where is actually sits today. Thirty years later, when the school decided to move from its downtown location to the spot where it sits today, the Journalism Building, then Alumni Hall, was deconstructed and moved up river one brick at a time. A herculean task that resulted in just one small mistake – the building is facing backwards. The lovely porch that should face the interior of campus has a spectacular view of the backside of Tiger Stadium. But hey, isn’t history all about the story anyway?

The Northgate location opened about a year and a half ago and has been a huge hit since. Whether it’s warm, gooey chocolate chip cookies or a brownie a la mode you’re craving, Insomnia is your one-stop shop. The best part? They deliver until 3 am.
Louie’s Louie’s has been around in one location or another since 1941 and the inside looks as if it hasn’t changed since opening day. There is no better place to go for your late night cravings than Louie’s as they have their entire menu - breakfast, lunch and dinner - 24 hours a day.
Highland Coffee Around since 1989, Highland Coffee is an LSU staple. There is no better place to grab a cup of coffee and cram before finals than Highland. From their cool vibe to their great coffee, there’s nothing not to love.
The Kolache Kitchen
EMILY BRAUNER / The Daily Reveille
Started by an LSU alumni in 2013, The Kolache Kitchen has made it’s way into the hearts -and stomachs- of LSU students since. There is no better breakfast/ hangover food than a warm apple kolache.
Fat Cow One of the coolest places I’ve ever eaten at, Fat Cow is in a league of its own. Located south of campus on Highland, Fat Cow is a funky specialty burger joint. Just so everyone knows, it is a crime to go to Fat Cow and pass up a milkshake (I think).
Varsity Theater Attached to The Chimes, the Varsity is a laid back music venue right at the gates of campus. There’s always someone playing and they screen Game of Thrones premiers.

LSU Lakes A part of campus that is often overlooked is the LSU lakes. Spanning many miles around campus and parts of the city, there is no better place to be on a warm, sunny day. You can have a picnic on the banks and just stare at the view or rent paddleboards and kayaks from the UREC and make a day out of it. Plus, in the spring, you can watch as hundreds of white pelicans come to the lakes in search of food.
Barcadia Barcadia is what happens when a bar and your inner child meet. As the name suggests, it’s part bar, part arcade. With life-size Jenga and plenty of craft beer on tap, Barcadia is a pretty cool way to spend an evening.
