BESO hosts sweet potato sale Sale at Highland, S. Stadium corner Alexis Rebennack Staff Writer
As Thanksgiving approaches, the University’s Biological Engineering Student Organization is providing the LSU community with festive ingredients to make the holiday a success. BESO members provide sweet potatoes and rice at its annual sale, with profits helping to send biological engineering students to the
yearly Institute of Biological Engineering conference. The sale takes place on the corner of South Stadium Drive and Highland Road from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and Nov. 25-27. Customers gathered Monday around sacks of potatoes and rice, while sharing stories with BESO students about how sweet potatoes and popcorn rice are a part of family holiday meal traditions. “My husband’s stepmother — who is no longer with us — was a gourmet cook, and she used to make these sweet potatoes for us, and they were amazing, said Louisiana resident Lisa Supple.
“She would bake them and make sweet potato casseroles, so I’m going to try and bake them like she did.â€? Other customers couldn’t stop talking about the deals the organization offers. “They’ve got pretty good sweet potatoes, and they are at reasonable prices,â€? said Pierre Rabalais, a University alumnus. “I’m originally from a sweet potato parish, so I’ve literally grown up around sweet potatoes, DQG ,¡P Ă€ [LQJ D JXPER WRQLJKW and, you know, sweet potatoes go with gumbo.â€? INTERNATIONAL Toronto council strips mayor of most of authority, debate gets heated TORONTO (AP) — Amid cries of “Shame! Shame! scandal-plagued Toronto Mayor Rob Ford was stripped of the last of his meaningful powers Monday after a heated City Council debate in which he argued with members of the public, charged hecklers and knocked a councilwoman down. Ford called the move a “coup d’etat and vowed an “outright war in the next election. “What’s happening here today is not a democratic process, it’s a dictatorship process, the 44-yearold mayor declared. Trial begins Monday over UK soldier’s murder during London attack LONDON (AP) — Two men accused of killing a British soldier in an apparent Islamic terrorist attack on a London street appeared in court on Monday as their trial began. Michael Adebolajo, 28, and Michael Adebowale, 22, were shot by police and placed under armed guard in a hospital after the May 22 attack on Lee Rigby, an off-duty soldier who was run over by a car, then stabbed repeatedly while walking back to his military barracks in southeast London.

Thibodaux council to consider saggy pants law, constituents’ complaints
APOPKA, Fla. (AP) — George Zimmerman was charged with assault Monday after his girlfriend called deputies to the home where they were living and claimed he pointed a shotgun at her during an argument, authorities said. The girlfriend, Samantha Scheibe, called 911 in the early afternoon to say that Zimmerman had smashed a glass table, threatened her with the shotgun and ultimately pushed her out of the house, according to an arrest report. THIBODAUX (AP) — The Thibodaux City Council is considering a saggy-pants ban. Terrebonne Parish outlawed saggy pants in April. The Lafourche Parish Council passed its ban in 2007. The Courier reports the council is considering an ordinance that parallels the rules and penalties already in place in Lafourche and Terrebonne. It would amend the city’s existing indecent exposure law to include “pants that sag below the waist and expose undergarments. Council members say the move is in response to constituent complaints.

The Aggies are currently ranked No. 3 in the nation in total offense, averaging 578 yards per game. Saturday’s contest should prove to be another challenge for a young Tigers’ defense that has struggled against the likes of Georgia, Ole Miss and Alabama this season. All three of these offenses rank lower than Texas A&M in total offense. Miles said he is looking forZDUG WR WKH GLIĂ€ FXOW WDVN DKHDG DQG he feels his defense can live up to it. “I want the defense to stop them,â€? It’s a much different environment [in Tiger Stadium] and a place where the home team generally does pretty good.â€? Miles said he intends to use a similar game plan on defense Saturday, and it will require his squad to be physically prepared for a fastpaced opposing offense. “You’re going to have to be in shape, and you’re going to have to JHW \RXUVHOI RII WKH Ă€ HOG GHIHQVLYH ly,â€? Miles lauded Manziel’s ability as a dual-threat quarterback. The sophomore has thrown for 3,313 yards and 31 touchdowns, completing 73 percent of his passes. He has also rushed 110 times for 611 yards and eight touchdowns through 10 games. “If there’s a better player in college football, I’d like to know who he is,â€? Offensively, the Tigers will try to keep pace with senior quarterback Zach Mettenberger under center. Mettenberger suffered a contusion in his ankle during the Alabama game, but Miles said his quarterback practiced and will be ready to play this weekend. Miles said he feels the Tigers’ offense can go blow-for-blow with the Aggies’ attack. “What we’re looking to do certainly is maintain the ball and drive WKH OHQJWK RI WKH Ă€ HOG Âľ 0LOHV VDLG “You have to score. PROS AND CONS*
Pros: “The touchpad is awesome. If they can integrate it in the games, it’ll work well.” Cons: “The availability. And there’s nothing out to play on it. There’s ‘Battlefield 4,’ and ‘Assassin’s Creed’ but not much variety.”
Pros: “The Kinect, because when it scans your heart rate, it’s not reading a body, it’s reading you. It actually knows when you’re holding the controller, it’ll sign you in.” Cons: “The forced Kinect because it drives the price up.”
