Koi Sushi: Excellent for First Timers, Veterans Alike BY ARI’YANA GIBSON @ariyana_mg Sushi. It’s a staple food for many college students, but usually the love for it doesn’t grow until beginning college. It all started with one of my friends forcing me to shove it in my mouth and ignore all of the weird textures. If you’re like me, you want those late night sushi dates with your BFF’s. Well, I have one word for you—Koi. Koi sushi, located on the outskirts of LSU, is where your sushi dreams will come true. I will 100 percent say this is the best quality sushi near campus, without breaking the bank. My menu favorite specialty roll would be the Sarah Roll. Filled with snow crab, avocado, tempura shrimp, topped with tuna, avocado and crunchy batter with eel sauce and spicy mayo garnishing it, the Sarah Roll is a big hit at Koi. This is a good roll for a first time sushi eater because tuna isn’t an overwhelming fish and you might not even notice it. The Amanda Roll is another crowd
pleaser. I suggest this if you aren’t ready for the “raw” experience yet, but still want a really cool looking roll. If you’re not ready for anything raw or overwhelming, they have the best Crunchy roll. The Crunchy roll is comprised of fried shrimp and avocado and topped with eel sauce. Another sushi pro tip is “spicy mayo.” Spicy mayo will turn any roll into creamy bliss. If you’re not ready for anything remotely close to sushi, even the most basic California roll, which Koi does these to perfection, try out the appetizers and rice. Koi offers a large vegetable filled rice and you can get it topped with chicken or shrimp, it is absolutely delicious. I’ve also recently tried dumplings. These are little wraps filled with chicken, pork, or shrimp and can be steamed or fried and are served with a sweet dumpling sauce. Koi does daily lunch specials under $10 and on Sundays they have 10 percent off on dine-in orders. They also offer take-out, which can be delivered with minimum orders of $20. So check out Koi Sushi located on 217 W. State Street.

Pierre’s Landing Offers Unique On-Campus Dining BY MARC STEVENS @MarcStevens TDR LSU’s dining options get a bad reputation for low quality food because of the lackluster performance of the dining halls on campus – the Five and 459. Most students and incoming freshman know about the LSU Student Union and what it has to offer, and the majority know about the poorly named “hidden” Subway outside of Foster Hall. There is another hidden gem on campus, which is more than worth your while. Pierre’s Landing is nestled right near Business Education Complex and Patrick F. Taylor Hall, and for these students is a staple in their weekly diet. But most students’ schedules don’t take them to the area. The lesser-known nature of Pierre’s makes it a perfect quick stop for a bite to eat. Whether you are looking for Louisiana classics such as jambalaya or red beans and rice or a chicken sandwich and fries, Pierre’s has what you need.
In addition to their lunch options, Pierre’s Landing serves classic breakfast items and a breakfast sandwich. This only adds to its appeal since breakfast eateries are few and far between on campus. Above all else Pierre’s is known for its Bayou Burgers. The burgers are a “blend of fresh Ground Chuck, Beef Brisket and Beef Short Rib. These fresh meats are flavored with just the right blend of creole seasonings, then grilled to perfection and topped the way you like,” according to LSU Dining’s website. Pierre’s has daily specials throughout the week, and relatively low prices make it a great option for students on a budget. Its flavorful menu and variety of selections are only a fraction of what makes Pierre’s the perfect hidden gem. That is only part of what this gem provides. In addition to the fresh food, Pierre’s is a mini convenience store with typical grab-and-go options such as chips and muffins. It has coolers are
full of sodas, teas and energy drinks and even features a Coke Icee machine. Whether you need a full meal after a long day of classes or a pick-meup before your early morning class, Pierre’s has just what you need. The quick, pleasant service with wellpriced meals makes this one of the best spots to eat on LSU’s campus.
FUEL YOUR TAILGATE WILLIAM TAYLOR POTTER @wmtaylorpotter
If there are two things Louisiana is known for, it’s food and football. When the two get together, it’s something magical. But for students, it can be difficult finding time to cook large amounts of food for tailgate parties. Luckily, there are tons of places that can provide snacks for your pre-game soiree, but you might want to have everyone chip in. Here’s a few ideas:
Cane’s may not be the fanciest place around, but it’s a cheap and easy way to get a whole lot of food for your party. The famous chicken restaurant offers tailgate quantities of 25, 50, 75 and 100 chicken tenders for reasonable prices. And, of course, the sauce is included.
If your group would rather have a restaurant cater your tailgate, Walk-On’s is a good bet. The restaurant’s catering menu includes tons of entrée and appetizer options, ranging from prime rib to spinach and artichoke dip. If you end up having your tailgate catered by Walk-On’s, you’ll definitely have one of the nicer student tailgates around. Be sure to have your checkbook handy, though.
Voodoo is oddly underrated. The food is delicious and the tailgate options are sure to provide enough to feed your friends. The restaurant’s catering packs range from the Supper Pack, which feeds four and includes half a pound each of chicken, pork and sausage and two pints of sides, to the Royal Orleans, which feeds 95-100 people and includes 13 lbs. of chicken, sausage and pork and eight gallons of sides. Of course, if your group is somewhere in the middle, there’s an option for you.
In terms of tailgate menu, TJ Ribs is similar to Voodoo. My personal favorite option is the large Touchdown meal, which feeds 24-30 people and includes grilled sausage, spinach dip, wings and a choice of pulled pork, chopped beef or brisket. You can also just buy the meat by the pound or get some of the restaurant’s specialties, such as BBQ shrimp or Fulton St. Ribs. Whatever you get, it will go nicely with the other tailgate festivities.

Sunset Diner Offers Alternative to Dining Hall Meals BY WILLIAM TAYLOR POTTER @wmtaylorpotter Between the dining halls, the on-campus restaurants and local venues on Highland Road, there’s no shortage of food around LSU. But there’s one place that tends to go unnoticed. The Sunset Diners, located in the Outtakes and Take 5, has some of the most underrated food options in the area. The menu includes your basic diner foods¬—hamburgers, mozzarella sticks and chicken strips, among others. It’s perfect for a quick dinner or a late-night snack. I, unfortunately, did not discover the Sunset Diner until the back half of my freshman year. Once I found out about it, I made the trek from South
Hall over to the Take 5 at least three times a week. I would advise others to monitor how often you partake in the service; if you’re not careful it can drain your Paw Points in a hurry. If you’re looking for a quick snack, I would definitely suggest the mozzarella sticks. They usually come piping hot, and the cheese is almost always perfectly melted. The marinara sauce is to die for. But if you’re in the mood for a bigger meal, try the sunset burger. It’s your basic burger topped with an egg and “sunset sauce.” Pair that with some onion rings and a drink, and you have a great, relatively cheap meal on campus. And if you’re one of those people who ends the year with hundreds of
Paw Points, the diner is definitely for you. There’s nothing better than treating yourself and your friends to a banquet of burgers, fries and quesadillas. Just be aware that the line around that time of year gets pretty ridiculous. The only real snag with the diner is the somewhat erratic hours. It does not open until later in the afternoon, though it stays open until the wee hours of the morning. Because of the hours, there will often be a long line of patrons waiting for the staff to begin service. So, if you don’t feel like trekking all the way to Highland in search of a burger or snack, definitely check out the Sunset Diner. It isn’t the cheapest option on campus, but it’s definitely one of the best.
